Why Miranda Lambert Didn’t Do Interviews for Her Latest Album: ‘I’d Already Been Through Hell’

Miranda Lambert had a good reason for not doing any interviews before she released her latest album — she didn’t want to “rehash” the heartbreak that inspired it.

The Weight of These Wings was written while Lambert was going through a very public divorce from fellow country singer Blake Shelton in 2015.

“I came into Marion office and said, ‘I’m not speaking to anyone until they hear this record,’” Lambert, 34, told music journalist Holly Gleason in an interview with HITS Daily Double.

“I thought that was fair,” Lambert continued, explaining that she thought the songs spoke for themselves.

From “Vice” to “Tin Man,” “all the sad moments were there, all the truths were right in those songs. All you had to do was listen. I didn’t need to say anything,” she remarked.

The singer also revealed that she wasn’t eager about the prospect of discussing the painful memories that inspired the album over and over again.

“It was going to be hell, and I’d already been through hell,” she explained. “It was hell putting it on paper, putting my words on paper. So I didn’t want to rehash. I’d finally gotten to a place where I wasn’t sad anymore.”

Lambert went on to say that anything she would have told interviewers “would’ve been taken out of context.”

“It would’ve set up some expectation that couldn’t be met,” she added. “I was very publicly going through this thing, and there wasn’t an explanation to be given.”

Then, when the album came out and she was finally ready to do an interview, she was immediately asked about Shelton’s relationship with Gwen Stefani.

“I got on the phone for the first interview. First question was, ‘How do you feel about Gwen?’ I hung up. I told Marion, I just can’t do this,” she said. “What was in the music was real, and I wanted people to get it from that. Take from it what they would. Then if I needed to talk, I would. But I haven’t really. Until now.”

During the first part of the interview, Lambert also opened up about how she’s not afraid to put everything, good and bad, into her music.

“I am who I am. I am honest about being flawed. That’s all I can be, you know? I cuss. I drink. I get divorced and get my heart broken. I break hearts,” Lambert, who has been dating new boyfriend Evan Felker amid rumors that their friendship turned romantic after he suddenly filed for divorce from his wife, shared of her personal experiences.

“I can’t do or be that anymore, or it’ll drive me crazy. I won’t be good anymore. I felt, maybe, a different kind of fear than any other record. It was really my life’s work and my life’s story. But there was also relief, I was thankful to let the music do what the music does — and to allow myself that,” she continued.

Frankie Grande Marks One Year of Sobriety: ‘I Have Never Been So Free’

Frankie Grande is marking one year of sobriety — and honoring the occasion by sharing a letter exclusively with PEOPLE. After turning to alcohol and drugs to cope with the trauma of the bombing that left 22 people dead during his sister Ariana‘s concert in Manchester, England last May, Grande has sought help and turned his life around.

In his letter, the 35-year-old describes how he got his health back after crawling into “a very dark place.”

“Today I am one year sober… and the gratitude that I feel in the face of this milestone is measureless. After the tragic events of Manchester, with the senseless loss of life and the fear that came from knowing my family was unsafe and that I was completely powerless to protect them, I went to a very dark place with no tools to handle the feelings that came along with the devastation of the attack. I tried to pull myself out of the darkness by drinking and abusing prescribed drugs as I had done in the past for so many other reasons… but that only made the hole that I was trying to crawl out of even deeper. The party life that had once given me so much confidence and comfort had turned into a nightmare where I never felt more alone. I remember lying on my bathroom floor after a night of drunken debauchery believing my life had reached the point where living was just too painful and I was envisioning any way to stop the constant torment… I finally had the courage to ask for help. I got help… and I am here today because with that help I discovered that the path to the light was not in drowning my sorrows, but in facing them head on… in sobriety.

I am here today as an example to all that have gone through a personal hell or are going through it right now, whatever that hell might be for you, that you can become whole again. In fact, you can become STRONGER than you ever thought possible. I am a new man, and the man you see before you is the one I was always meant to be. This decision to be sober is a lifetime decision. I live without needing a drink or a drug to change the way I feel or perceive my circumstances and outcomes. I have repaired relationships I previously thought unsalvageable and I am living my best TRUEST life. I have never been happier. I have never been healthier. I have never been so free.

So let’s all celebrate my one year of sobriety together… may it be the first of many… and if you have ever found yourself in a cycle of depression where you are drinking and/or using to excess and you believe that there is no way out I am here to tell you there is help out there! You are ABSOLUTELY NOT ALONE!”

Nearly one week after the Manchester attack on May 22, 2017, Grande took to social media to speak out about the tragedy in a series of tweets.

“My prayers, thoughts, meditations & strength has been focused on those families and victims affected by the horrific tragedy in Manchester,” he wrote in his initial tweet.

He added in a pair of follow-up posts: “I echo my sisters sentiment & say we can’t allow hate to propagate hate & fear to propagate fear … but rather come together & spread a message of love, unity, & empowement .”

“& so I say, as I have before, shine bright, & when evil comes 2drown out your light, 3throw shade over your beautiful soul, shine brighter!” Grande continued, before ending his thoughts by sharing a fundraising page for the families of the victims, writing, “I love you all so very much and thank you for your strength during this incredibly difficult time.”

Grande concluded his letter with contacts for the following organizations for anyone who needs help: Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, SAMSHA and the Suicide Prevention Hotline.

John Cena & Nikki Bella: Inside Their Canceled Nuptials on What Would Have Been Their Wedding Day

May 5 would have been John Cena and Nikki Bella‘s wedding day.

However, Bella, 34, called off the engagement three weeks before the WWE pair would walk down the aisle during their destination ceremony. Sources previously told PEOPLE that her decision to break up was due to their differing stances on marriage and having kids.

The nuptials would’ve occurred over a year after Cena, 40, proposed to Bella on live TV during WrestleMania 33 in April 2017. And there was even a TV special planned about their wedding set to air in July, but the concept was scrapped after they split after six years together.

RELATED: John Cena’s ‘Ups and Downs’ with Ex-Fiancée Nikki Bella — in His Own Words

While Cena and Bella will not be going ahead with their “I dos,” here are all the wedding details they had shared with their fans and viewers of Total Bella and Total Divas.

The Dress

The same month she accepted Cena’s proposal, Bella was already in full wedding mode as she spoke candidly about what she envisioned for her big day.

“I’m kind of happy I’m getting married in my 30s, because in my 20s I would’ve had something obnoxious, princess-like Kate Middleton. I want lace I think. I want something very classy, like classic and sexy. Something classic, form-fitting. I do want a veil,” Bella told PEOPLE in April 2017, jokingly adding, “Who am I without cleavage?”

Also in April 2017, Bella took a trip to New York Bridal Fashion Week to look at wedding dresses from Romona Keveza and Marchesa. In August 2017, Bella revealed hints about her gown, telling PEOPLE Now, “I can say that it’s a Marchesa.”

During an episode of Total Divas that aired in January 2018, Brie Bella surprised her twin sister with a bridal shopping trip, during which Nikki tried on multiple dress options.

Meanwhile, Cena did not opt for a custom look.

“I also have a few decent-looking tuxes in the wardrobe already, so depending on the colors and the schemes of the wedding and the theme, I might already have something,” he told PEOPLE in July 2017. “I have a few tailors that I work with, just because I’m not exactly somebody who can buy a suit off the rack.”

Wedding Planning

Following the engagement, Bella and Cena expressed their excitement for their wedding.

“I think everyone’s going to think I’m a bridezilla. I really do. I think I’m just so happy to be engaged and that John decided he wanted to get married. I just want to take this in and make it fun and happy,” Bella told PEOPLE in April 2017. “The minute it’s not fun, it’s like why are we doing this? This is why he didn’t want to do it, right? So I want to make it easy and romantic and intimate. Make it for us, no one else but us.”

In July 2017, Bella announced that Brie would be matron of honor.

Meanwhile, Cena told PEOPLE he doesn’t need all the pomp and circumstance.

“I’ve stressed to Nicole that I would really like to get it done because I guess it took me so long to ask, now that I’ve made the commitment I really just want to get married,” he said in July 2017.

“I want it yesterday, but we have a date,” Cena said in April, shortly before their breakup. “I’m excited, but I also have great perspective that I want the day to be important for Nicole.”

He added, “All that information rests on her shoulders. I’m involved in every single step of the process, but I am like the last checkpoint. So, let’s say, décor will be chosen. And then I’ll be given three options but be nudged to like number two. I will politely agree to number two, but I am very much actively a part of the process.”

In October 2017, Bella, who was competing on Dancing with the Stars at the time, revealed that the wedding date was pushed back. “We changed the date and location,” she said, adding that the adjustment was spurred by “schedules” as well as their many responsibilities and commitments.

Bachelorette Party — But No Bachelor Party

In March, Nikki celebrated with a nine-day bachelorette party in Paris with Brie and their closest friends.

Meanwhile, Cena said he had no interest in a stag night.

“No, I mean, why? Help me out. What is a bachelor party? I’m gonna skip it,” he told E! News in March.

The Big Day

While John and Nikki will not be tying the knot, Brie recently told PEOPLE that she will be there for her sister on their wedding date.

Brie said that she was considering planning a girls trip for her twin to keep their minds distracted. “I’m throwing some stuff out there to her. We might do something, we are deciding. There’s a part of her that just wants to be home,” she said in late April.

“I just told her, you lead the way and I’ll follow. … If it’s at home and eating pizza and devouring ice cream, I’m down for that or if want to escape to Napa and down a lot of wine, I’m down for that as well,” Brie added.

The mother of one also added that Total Bellas viewers will see everything that led up to the former couple’s separation.

“I have to give a lot of credit to John and Nicole. They really opened up their lives and they really wanted to close the curtain and be like this is it, we’re done,” she said. “My sister is really great with her fans in a way where she lets them connect with her. She lets them like go, ‘My life isn’t perfect and isn’t easy’ and lets them see the playbook of her life.”

Selena Gomez Visits Childhood Home and Wonders If It ‘Could Have Been Better Than My Life Today’

Selena Gomez spent part of the weekend reflecting on her past — and taking a literal trip down memory lane.

The 25-year-old singer shared a photo of herself perched on the doorstep of the Texas home where she spent her youth, on Saturday, writing on Instagram, “The home I grew up in, from birth to 13… (no one was home when I knocked this time lol).”

“I visit this place every chance I get,” Gomez said. “In many ways it very well could have been better than my life today, but I’m grateful for a voice that can enable change today. Even when I don’t know how to do it well or actually want it. I love you Grand Prairie. Thank you.”

There have recently been strains between Gomez and her mom Mandy Teefey, noticed by fans after the duo unfollowed each other on Instagram. But their recent estrangement wasn’t sparked solely by pop star’s newly rekindled relationship with Justin Bieber.

“It’s more complicated than just fighting over a guy,” a source close to the family previously told PEOPLE. “Mandy and Selena have had their ups and down before. This isn’t the first time.”

Though the mother and daughter weren’t on speaking terms toward the end of last year, Gomez “also wants to give her mom some space,” added the insider. “When they fight, they fight hard. But when they love, they also love hard.”

Multiple sources previously told PEOPLE Gomez’s family was concerned about the on-again romance and that Bieber was determined to show her loved ones he had matured.

An insider also confirmed that Teefey, 41, had voluntarily sought treatment at a hospital in Los Angeles in December but dismissed a report that it was because of an argument with her daughter over Bieber. “It’s been a stressful time for Mandy and she made the decision herself to go to the hospital and make sure everything was okay,” said the source.

After ringing in the new year together in Mexico, Bieber and Gomez headed to a private gym session in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

A source previously told PEOPLE that they welcomed 2018 in Cabo with friends, adding that the pair are “doing great.”

From the Grassy Knoll to Ted Cruz’s Dad: The Biggest JFK Assassination Conspiracy Theories and How They’ve Been (Mostly) Debunked

On Nov. 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated while riding through the streets of Dallas in an open-topped motorcade. With wife Jackie Kennedy by his side, the 46-year-old president was struck by two bullets — one in the head and one in the neck. Former U.S. Marine Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with the murder, and a presidential commission later found that the gunman had acted alone.

But that conclusion has hardly satisfied the public, with JFK’s assassination fueling conspiracy theories for decades to come.

On Thursday, nearly 54 years later, the government is expected to release thousands of long-blocked and classified documents about JFK’s assassination, in a move that could further inflame existing conspiracy theories — or spawn new ones.

Here are three of the top conspiracy theories about JFK’s murder — so far:

1. The grassy knoll

Some say the trajectory of the bullets that struck JFK didn’t align with Oswald’s position on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository, spurring theories that a second gunman — perhaps on the grassy knoll of Dallas’ Dealey Plaza — participated in the shooting.

That theory was given a boost by none other than the U.S. House of Representatives, which voted in 1976 — in the wake of the Watergate scandal — to establish a Select Committee on Assassinations to reinvestigate JFK’s killing.

The House found no evidence of Soviet, Cuban or CIA involvement in Kennedy’s assassination, but did conclude that there was “probably” a conspiracy involving a second gunman on the “grassy knoll,” The Washington Post reported, while pointing out that the theory has since been discredited multiple times.

In 2008, a team of experts used high-tech tools including 3-D computer simulations, artificial human body surrogates and modern blood splatter analysis to determine that Oswald’s perch is the likely origin point of the bullet that killed Kennedy, NBC News reported.

2. LBJ or the CIA

According to other widespread conspiracy theories, JFK’s assassination was plotted by the CIA and/or then-Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, who was sworn in as president hours after Kennedy was shot.

Some speculate that LBJ plotted Kennedy’s assassination because the vice president feared being dropped from the Democratic ticket in the upcoming 1964 election.

Kennedy’s personal secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, said in her 1968 memoir that Kennedy had in fact planned to replace Johnson as vice president, and that he told Lincoln as much just three days before he was killed.

However, historians and scholars have scoffed at the theory that LBJ orchestrated his boss’s death. Larry Sabato, author of The Kennedy Half-Century, told the Daily Beast the theory has no “hard evidence” and is “ridiculous.”

Others believe the CIA had Kennedy killed because the agency opposed some of the president’s positions on Cuba and Communism, particularly his refusal to offer air support for the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, a CIA mission to overthrow Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro, Business Insider reported.

The new documents are expected to shed light on the CIA’s response to the assassination — and could finally put this conspiracy to rest.

Although this theory has been the hardest to disprove, Mark Fenster, author of Conspiracy Theories: Secrecy and Power in American Culture, told the Daily Beast he’s deeply skeptical of it because “I’m not convinced that the CIA of that era has shown itself as an organization to be exceptionally competent at doing anything but ruining other countries and people’s lives in openly secretive ways. Pulling off a JFK hit and keeping it secret this long would be the mark of an incredibly competent plot.”

3. Ted Cruz’s dad

A theory resurfaced by President Donald Trump on the campaign trail claims that Sen. Ted Cruz’s father, Rafael Cruz, was somehow involved in JFK’s killing and had been spotted with Oswald before the shooting.

Taking aim at his 2016 rival’s father, Trump told Fox News in a telephone interview last year, “His father was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to Oswald being, you know, shot. I mean the whole thing is ridiculous. What is this? Right? Prior to his being shot. And nobody even brings it up. I mean, they don’t even talk about that — that was reported. And nobody talks about it.”

This theory has also been widely discredited, with FactCheck.org pointing out that Trump was citing a National Enquirer articleThe piece quotes a photo expert who said an unidentified man spotted handing out Fidel Castro leaflets with Oswald has “more similarity than dissimilarity” to the elder Cruz.

RELATED VIDEO: Story Behind the Story: Jackie Kennedy and JFK’s Legacy

Speculation over JFK’s assassination is so popular that the majority of Americans have actually bought into the theories. A 2013 Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 62 percent of Americans believe Kennedy’s murder was part of a broader plot.

Meanwhile, Jackie Kennedy’s former Secret Service agent, Clint Hill, told PEOPLE this week that he believes the former first lady would support the release of the long-secret documents in the name of transparency.

“It was my understanding that she wanted all the information released,” he said. “She wanted people to have as much information about what actually happened as possible.”

Destiny 2 Beta’s Toughest Objective Had Been Fixed Before the Beta Came Out

The most difficult and frustrating mission from the Destiny 2 Beta was already caught and fixed for the release version of the game before the Beta was available.

Polygon reports that due to the Destiny 2 Beta being an earlier build than the release version of the game, there were elements that players are experiencing that have already been fixed or changed.

This includes the already infamous section where players must find a way to “Overload the generator” near the end of the opening Homecoming mission. While simple in premise, the difficulty of this objective comes from locating the sunken chambers and then not being insta-killed by two rotating turbine arms.

Inside Serial Killer Son of Sam’s Life Now: How He’s Been Born-Again as ‘Son of Hope’ and Doesn’t Want to Leave Prison

In the years since his arrest ended a reign of terror over New York City that peaked in the summer of 1977, David Berkowitz — the serial killer known as the “Son of Sam” — has rechristened himself the “Son of Hope,” claiming he’s a born-again Christian who wants to remain behind bars, according to his visitors in prison.

The redemptive identity is an attempt to replace the menacing one that Berkowitz, now 64, adopted in taunting letters written to police and a newspaper columnist during a deadly rampage that gripped the city in fear 40 years ago.

His 13-month shooting spree, which killed six people and wounded seven others, will be revisited in the Investigation Discovery documentary Son of Sam: The Hunt for a Killer, premiering Aug. 5 and exclusively previewed in a clip above.

Serving six consecutive terms of 25 years-to-life since pleading guilty to murder in May 1978, Berkowitz “has to wake up every day and remember what he did to innocent people,” minister Roxanne Tauriello, who is a regular visitor to him in prison, tells PEOPLE.

“David grieves over that a lot, and you can’t say to him — you never want to say ‘Son of Sam’ in front of him,” Tauriello says. “He never uses that name, ever.”

“He is genuinely sorrowful and does not want to get out of prison,” she says. “He knows he deserved to die and deserves to be exactly where he is.”

• For more on the Son of Sam case then and now, subscribe now to PEOPLE or pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday.

Berkowitz’s shootings began on July 29, 1976, when he opened fire on two young women parked outside a Bronx apartment, instantly killing one of them, 18-year-old Donna Lauria. Investigators eventually linked his attacks — several of which targeted couples parked in dimly lit lovers’ lanes — by the .44-caliber handgun he used in all of them.

The cat-and-mouse game he played with police escalated after a shooting the next year, on April 17, 1977, when Berkowitz first called himself the “Son of Sam” in a letter left behind for authorities.

The next month, on May 30, another letter from the killer delivered to then-New York Daily News columnist Jimmy Breslin fed the growing panic.

“He is very aware of the public’s fear and incredible fascination with him,” says criminologist Scott Bonn, who interviewed Berkowitz in prison in 2013 for his book Why We Love Serial Killers: The Curious Appeal of the World’s Most Savage Murderers.

“He is a gnome-looking, bald, chubby guy with red cheeks, and he comes bouncing in to meet you,” Bonn tells PEOPLE. “He is quite different from the sullen ‘Son of Sam’ from the ’70s.”

After his capture, Berkowitz’s claims that he’d been ordered to kill by a demon (through a barking dog) initially led him to be judged mentally unfit. After that ruling was reversed and he was ordered to face charges, Berkowitz avoided a trial by pleading guilty.

In 1987, Bonn says, Berkowitz “reached a bottoming-out in prison. He didn’t want to live anymore and contemplated suicide.” But Berkowitz told Bonn that God forgave him after a dark night of despair, and he says he found religion that same year.

“He claims to be a born-again Christian,” Bonn says. Called “Brother Dave” by other inmates, Berkowitz now participates in an online ministry that is operated for him by evangelical Christians.

“He gets thousands of hits for that site because he is an interesting character,” Bonn says.

Adds minister Tauriello: “I cannot reconcile his deeds with the person I know today. It is hard to believe that at one time he was so wicked, so evil, so violent.”

In an interview with ID, however, retired N.Y.C. police Capt. Joe Borrelli wasn’t sold on Berkowitz’s conversion, saying, “It doesn’t make up for all those young women that he killed.”

“He is not putting on a façade, and he is not doing anything to get out of prison,” Tauriello says, noting that “years ago he wrote a letter to Gov. Pataki stating he does not want to come out.”

“He told me in conversations that he deserved to die, that he should have died, but at that time in New York, they did not have the death penalty,” she says. “He destroyed the lives of his victims, the parents of his victims and those that survived, who have to live with the fear of that.”

Now, according to Tauriello, Berkowitz says “one of his goals is to warn young people on the road to destruction. One of his ministries is to reach out to young people to show them the consequences of actions.”

Taylor Lautner Has Been ‘Like A Husband’ To Girlfriend Billie Lourd

In December, actress Billie Lourd lost both her mother Carrie Fisher and her grandmother Debbie Reynolds just one day apart

A post shared by Billie Lourd (@praisethelourd) on

In the wake of their sudden deaths, Lourd and her uncle Todd Fisher ― Carrie’s brother ― have leaned on each other heavily. And it seems Lourd has also found an incredibly supportive partner in boyfriend and “Scream Queens” costar Taylor Lautner.

In an interview with E! News, Fisher said he always tends to be “suspicious of the guy hanging around [his] niece,” and yet had nothing but wonderful things to say about Lautner.

“The truth of the matter is, the guy is pretty spectacular,” Fisher said. “He’s a really deep person, and he has supported her amazingly. He’s stepped up and acted like a husband would act. Not that that’s what’s going on, but it’s just an amazing support system for her, and I’m glad he’s in her life.”

On December 27 ― the day the “Star Wars” actress died ― Lautner posted a sweet photo with Lourd on Instagram with a caption that read, “This girl is one of the strongest, most fearless individuals I’ve ever met. Absolutely beautiful inside and out. I’m lucky to know you @praisethelourd. ❤️, me.”

The “Twilight” actor was also in attendance at the memorial and funeral for Fisher and Reynolds in January. The following week, Lautner and Lourd vacationed together in Mexico, further sparking rumors of a romance. And the pair has been spending a lot of quality time together ever since.

Julie Andrews: I’ve ‘Just Always’ Been An LGBTQ Ally

For Julie Andrews, being a patron of the arts and an LGBTQ rights advocate go hand in hand.

In a new interview with The Advocate, the legendary star of “Mary Poppins” and “The Sound of Music” credited her years of working in film and on stage for exposing her to diversity early on. When it comes to queer people specifically, Andrews said she’s “just always” been an ally.

“Theater, anyway, is such an open community and free,” the Oscar winner said. She went on to note that she was “very aware of bias and bigotry” from a young age, but that she “was raised not to be that way and not to think that way.”

“It always seemed puzzling to me that the world wasn’t just embracing human beings. But it’s never been something that I stumbled on,” she said. “It’s just always been innate, thanks I think to the professions that I am in.”

Andrews, 81, is back in the spotlight as the host of “Julie’s Greenroom,” a new Netflix series for children that explores different aspects of the performing arts. Her co-stars in the series are the “Greenies,” a cast of original puppets that were created by The Jim Henson Company. One of the “Greenies,” Riley, is depicted as a gender neutral character. “We tried to be as inclusive as we possibly could within the show,” Andrews, who created “Julie’s Greenroom” with her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, and Judy Rothman, said.

In March, Andrews and Hamilton spoke out against President Donald Trump’s “mind-boggling” plan to cut funding for the National Endowment for the Arts in an impassioned CNN editorial. True to form, the woman beloved by legions of fans for her iconic role as Maria von Trapp doubled down on that stance in the Advocate interview.

“There’s no doubt that [the arts] help people understand each other and they transcend all barriers, and I cannot think of anything more important,” Andrews said. As far as her suggestion for Trump’s apparent disregard for the arts is concerned, she said, “Talk to anybody that is passionate about them and listen and learn, because I cannot imagine a world without them.”

No, You’re Not Imagining Things: Every Celebrity Has Been Wearing This Brand

When Selena Gomez posted the first selfie that more or less confirmed her relationship with The Weeknd at Weekend 1 of Coachella, we didn’t immediately think, “Are they or aren’t they?” (Although, that question this pop up very shortly after.) Instead, we thought to ourselves: “Hm, where have we seen Selena’s dress before?” It took us a full second to realize where we’ve spotted the bright blue, floral-printed, square-necked slip dress with the matching bandana before: on nearly every fashionable Instagram star that’s been turned on to fellow cool girl Harley Viera Newton’s clothing line, HVN.

It hasn’t even been a year since the model/DJ launched her eponymous label last summer exclusively on MatchesFashion. But the line, which translates vintage-inspired dress silhouettes into contemporary printed-silk styles, has grown immensely, both in terms of where it’s stocked (HVN is now sold at Opening Ceremony, Net-a-Porter, Kirna Zabete, and more industry-favorite retailers) and who’s wearing it. Alexa Chung, Caroline Issa, and Natalie Joos were early supporters of the label — but as its selection of peppy patterns has multiplied, so has its fan base: Everyone from Jennifer Garner and Kelly Ripa to Sasha Lane and Gomez has recently have worn HVN; it’s an eclectic gang of stylish women who’ve all got an appreciation for nostalgic prints on flowy dresses. And we must say, the #OOTD envy is real.

“I’ve been really lucky to have some amazing women wearing my dresses,” Viera Newton told Refinery29. Margot Robbie was one of HVN’s earliest adopters, opting for the cherry-print Morgan dress; stylist Kate Young tipped her off to the brand. “This print definitely became a top seller, and is now a core pattern I have brought back for other seasons,” she told us of the fruit-themed pattern. As for the DJ-turned-designer’s “dream HVN girl,” that’d be none other than Rihanna: “I would love to see how she would style the dresses and make them her own.”

Now, the entry price on Newton’s line is pretty steep: Styles start at $ 445 and cap out at $ 755. So, if any of these dresses have piqued your interest, you may want to start saving your pennies now, before the warm weather settles in fully. But judging from the crop of celebrities that have worn HVN in the past few months (many of whom are repeat customers), these are the type of pieces you keep wearing again, and again, and again, and again, regardless of the season. Read on to see what all the hype is about.

Put down the fringe and pick up one of HVN’s peppy floral prints — it’s what Selena Gomez would do (and actually did do at Coachella this past weekend).

Gomez wears HVN's Falling Floral Nora Dress.

Baby, you’re a (HVN) firework: here’s Ashley Benson in the latest riff on the Morgan shirtdress.

HVN Morgan Firework-Print Short-Sleeved Dress, $ 625, available at MatchesFashion.

HVN’s cosmic prints have been a recent favorite among the brand’s biggest fans. Kate Mara is partial to the comet print on the Lily silhouette, a ’90s-esque slip with a belted waist.

HVN Lily Harley’s Comet-print silk slip dress, $ 445, available at MatchesFashion.

Once we all collectively decide to move on from millennial pink (it’ll happen one day, folks — we’ve got to brace ourselves for it), we have a feeling mint green will fill the pastel-hued void in our wardrobe. Kelly Ripa already found her match in this HVN shirtdress.

Ripa wears HVN's Morgan Vine dress.

Jennifer Garner is actually one of HVN’s biggest stans: She owns the Morgan in the Tarzan print (pictured), and has also been spotted multiple times in the blue, heart-printed Maria dress.

These 4 Dogs Have Been Patiently Waiting for More Than a Year for Forever Homes — Adopt Them?

Every pet deserves a warm bed and an even warmer hug.

Unfortunately, there are countless pets in this world that are homeless and yearning to make a human’s life better. Shelter and rescues like Best Friends Animal Society, the largest no-kill animal organization in the country, help many of these cats, dogs and other critters find that forever home, providing them with the medical care, attention and diets they need until that happens.

This magical moment of “finding their human” occurs at different times for every pet. Some are only in the shelter for one day, but others are left to patiently wait for months, sometimes even years.

In honor of Adopt a Shelter Pet Day we want to highlight four superb canines that have been living with Best Friends for more than one year, hoping to find their forever. Maybe their wait is almost over.

“Handsome Duke is looking for a kingdom to reign over. This noble shepherd/Chow Chow mix is well-mannered and super smart. Duke likes to spend his time running around, playing, hoping for ear scratches and napping in his very own fashion: upside down, feet straight up to the sky. Duke is great with most other dogs and such a sweetie. He’d be a fabulous companion for any big dog lover,” gushed his current caretakers.

If you think this active gentleman is for you, contact Best Friends Animal Society – Los Angeles at (818) 643-3989.

Best Friends says, “Pretty Nina is a fun, active gal and the perfect exercise pal. She loves long walks, hikes and play time in the yard. Nina adores people and can play nicely with most other large dogs, too. She was recently in a foster home and was described as: ‘An absolute star! Nina’s an energetic, affectionate 75-pound lap dog.’ This special girl is so ready to be your best friend.”

To learn more about this large lap dog, contact Best Friends Animal Society – Los Angeles at (818) 643-3989.

Best Friends describes 2-year-old Tyler as a young, lovable retriever mix that is smart, playful and super active. And he’s a smarty-pants who already knows sit, down and give paw! He has been in an amazing foster home with a trainer who is teaching him extra manners and commands so he can be your ideal companion. Tyler loves learning new things and going for long walks in the park. Tyler is a typical busy-body teenager and is looking for someone who shares his zest for life and is happy to help him work on his training. He loves other dogs but can be a little too wacky and wild for some.

If Tyler sounds like a perfect fit for your home, contact Best Friends Animal Society – New York (347) 762-3678.

Churchill is a man of simple pleasures. This American bulldog mix just wants your love, some yummy treats and the occasional belly rub. Churchill takes a little extra time to warm up to new people, but with some extra TLC and patience (and treats!) he’ll be your bro, too. He’s got the most ridiculous and adorable underbite that makes him look like a character from Lord of the Rings. And he has the sweetest brown eyes. Churchill has also decided that he’s all the dog that anybody should really need and prefers to be the only dog in his home.

To become Churchill’s human, contact Best Friends Animal Society – New York (347) 762-3678.

These Disney Princesses Have Been Reimagined As Women’s Rights Activists

Let’s get down to business, to defeat… the patriarchy?

These Disney princesses want to be where the protesters are in these resistance-inspired illustrations. Oregonian Amanda Allen Niday has created nine picketing princesses who take on issues like racism, sexism, and xenophobia.

The 27-year-old illustrator told Teen Vogue she got the idea after watching women gather for the Women’s March in January.

“I felt inspired by the way women expressed themselves on their signs, from the witty and charming to the downright scathing. Women coming together from all backgrounds to say ‘we are HERE and we MATTER,’” Niday said. “I wanted to hold onto that message as my newsfeeds dissolved back into squabbling and finding faults in our difference, rather than understanding.”

Niday used that inspiration in combination with lines the princesses said in their respective movies to create the images you see below.

She chose quotes that “would allude to their story as whole, had deeper meaning within the movie, or referenced modern issues.”

Disney princesses have oft been reimagined ― primarily because they’re such iconic figures in pop culture. Niday told Teen Vogue that she wanted to use these characters to “remind girls that they’re brave, strong and valuable” and “symbolize what women can or should do.”

If you want to check out more of Niday’s work, here is her Instagram and her Society6 page.

Oprah Winfrey Says ‘I Wouldn’t Have Been A Good Mom For Babies’

Oprah Winfrey has been a mother of sorts to millions of TV viewers ― but the magnate and activist said having children of her own wouldn’t have been a good idea.

I wouldn’t have been a good mom for babies,” the 63-year-old former talk show host said in an April issue preview of Good Housekeeping U.K., posted Friday. “I don’t have the patience. I have the patience for puppies, but that’s a quick stage!”

Winfrey now uses motherly instincts to direct her Leadership Academy boarding school in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has 172 girls enrolled ― 20 of whom attend college in the United States and use her residence as a home away from home.

“When people were pressuring me to get married and have children, I knew I was not going to be a person that ever regretted not having them, because I feel like I am a mother to the world’s children,” she told the magazine. “Love knows no boundaries. It doesn’t matter if a child came from your womb or if you found that person at age 2, 10 or 20. If the love is real, the caring is pure and it comes from a good space, it works.”

Winfrey, who lost a child just weeks after birth when she was 14, has opened up previously about forgoing parenthood. “If I had kids, my kids would hate me,” she said in a 2013 interview. “They would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because something [in my life] would have had to suffer and it would’ve probably been them.”

Americans Are More Unhappy Than They’ve Been Since the Recession

The Trump effect?

How Many Terrorist Attacks in the U.S. Have Been Carried Out by Immigrants from the 7 Banned Muslim Countries?

On Friday, President Donald Trump signed a controversial executive order that suspended entry of all refugees to the United States for 120 days, barred Syrian refugees indefinitely, and blocked entry into the U.S. for 90 days for citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

The ban has sparked outrage, fear and protests across America and the globe. Some have also called into question its legality, pointing to the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which banned all discrimination against immigrants on the basis of national origin. On Saturday, federal judges in New York and Boston barred officials from deporting some refugees who found themselves affected by Trump’s order in the midst of traveling.

According to the order as supplied by the White House, the ban aims to “protect the American people from terrorist attacks by foreign nationals admitted to the United States.”

“Numerous foreign-born individuals have been convicted or implicated in terrorism-related crimes since September 11, 2001,” the order states. “The United States must be vigilant during the visa-issuance process to ensure that those approved for admission do not intend to harm Americans and that they have no ties to terrorism.”

According to the order, a waiver may be granted on a case-by-case basis by both the Department of State and the Department of Homeland Security and may be granted for those who are “a religious minority in his country of nationality facing religious persecution” as long as they don’t pose a security risk to the U.S. Before signing his executive order, Trump told the Christian Broadcasting Network  that Christian refugees from Syria should be given priority treatment when entering the U.S. over Muslims.

According to the Washington Post and Bloomberg, Trump’s ban did not include any of the Muslim-majority countries where the Trump Organization — which is now being run by his sons — holds business interests. Those countries reportedly include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, the U.A.E. and Azerbaijan.

Here’s a look back at the major terrorist attacks that have taken place on U.S. soil since 9/11, including the nationalities of the perpetrator, or perpetrators.

Of this list, zero fatal attacks were carried out by immigrants from the seven Muslim-majority countries targeted by the ban. Two attacks were carried out by individuals with ties to the seven countries: the 2006 UNC SUV attack, and the 2016 Ohio State University attack. Neither of those plots resulted in American deaths.

9/11 attacks:

On Sept. 11, 2001, 19 militants hijacked four commercial airlines to carry out terrorist attacks on the U.S. that killed 2,996 people and wounded more than 6,000 others. The 19 men were associated with al-Qaeda, a decentralized terrorist network, at the time led by Osama bin Laden.

Of the 19 hijackers, 15 were from Saudi Arabia, two from the United Arab Emirates, one from Egypt and one from Lebanon.

2001 anthrax attacks:

Anonymous letters laced with deadly anthrax spores began arriving at media companies and congressional offices, killing five people and infecting 17 others. The FBI concluded Bruce Ivins, a top biodefense researcher, was the key suspect for the attacks, although he was never charged with any crime. Ivins was American.

2002 D.C. sniper attacks:

Over the course of three weeks in 2002, John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo killed 10 people and critically injured three others in Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Virginia.

Muhammad was born as John Allen Williams in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Malvo is from Jamaica.

Chris Soules Reveals Breakup With Whitney Bischoff Has Been ‘Really Tough’

Their amazing journey has finally come to an end, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a rough road ahead.

After Chris Soules and Whitney Bischoff “mutually and amicably” decided to end their engagement, which a rep confirmed to The Huffington Post, the “Bachelor” couple is now opening up about the split. Soules took to Twitter recently to thank fans for their support, revealing that the breakup has been “really tough”:

Soules’ former better half Bischoff has also taken to social media to thank everyone for their “outpouring love, kindness and support,” posting a video of one adorable little supporter:

With the split, Soules and Bischoff join a long line of “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” couples that just didn’t work out.

Even with the bad statistics, fans shouldn’t totally give up on TV romances just yet. “Bachelor” couple Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici are now reportedly trying to have a baby, which is great news, because if beautiful people can’t fall in love in front of millions in a short amount of time on a reality show, what hope is there for the rest of us?

The Path To The Big Screen Has Been Anything But Sunny For Cameron Crowe’s ‘Aloha’

Oh, the places Cameron Crowe will go: all the way to Hawaii, apparently, to make a movie that spent several years in development, drifted almost completely into the Hollywood ether, sprung back to life with a new cast and was condemned by a top-level studio executive. The once-exalted director — responsible for beloved hits like “Say Anything…,” “Jerry Maguire” and “Almost Famous” — needs redemption after the trifecta of “Vanilla Sky,” “Elizabethtown” and “We Bought a Zoo” soiled his résumé. Sadly, “Aloha” and its lengthy journey to the big screen won’t quite get him there.

Starring Bradley Cooper as a defense contractor completing a satellite mission in Honolulu, “Aloha” is part romantic comedy and part military sting operation. (Said operation deals with the militarization of space, which is as “huh?”-worthy as it sounds for a rom-com.) Cooper’s character completes his work under the watch of a chatty Air Force pilot (Emma Stone) who becomes an obvious love interest, but he also reunites with a long-lost flame (Rachel McAdams) who is now married with two kids. Along the way, the movie gets about as messy as its development woes.

Doubling as a case study about a movie gone awry, below is a timeline of the trouble (at least the extent that’s on the record) that has plagued “Aloha” over the past several years.

rachel mcadams

June 8, 2008: Sony-owned Columbia Pictures tops four rival studios in the heated bidding for an untitled, fully developed Cameron Crowe “romanic-comedy adventure” starring Ben Stiller and Reese Witherspoon. Plot details are kept under wraps, but the movie is slated to begin shooting in January 2009. It will be Crowe’s first movie since 2005’s widely detested “Elizabethtown.”

October 2008: The plot leaks online after the script begins to circulate. Stiller is said to be playing Brian Gilcrest, a disgraced U.S. weapons consultant who is ordered to supervise the launch of a spy satellite in Hawaii. While stationed there with the humorless Major Lisa Ng (uncast), he reencounters his long-lost love (presumably Witherspoon), who is now married with two kids. Self-discovery ensues, along with a dose of the supernatural when Brian experiences visions of the Hawaiian gods and is asked to find a sacrifice for one of the island’s volcanoes. (Cue “Joe Versus the Volcano” comparisons.) Crowe, a former rock journalist, is known for his movies’ catchy soundtracks, and the script contains a sample playlist of songs that could factor into the film:
Cat Stevens — “Don’t Be Shy”
U2 — “Elevation”
The Rolling Stones — “Prodigal Son”
The Blue Nile — “Let’s Go Out Tonight”
Buckner & Garcia — “Pac-Man Fever”
Tom Jones — “What’s New Pussycat”
The Who — “Baba O’ Riley”
The Beatles — “She’s Leaving Home”
Stevie Wonder — “Ribbon in the Sky”

December 2008: The film is titled “Deep Tiki,” but Witherspoon tells Collider that shooting has been postponed until 2010.

August 2009: With “Deep Tiki” development news at a halt, Crowe reemerges by directing Pearl Jam’s video for “The Fixer,” his first behind-the-camera work since “Elizabethtown.”

May 2010: “Deep Tiki” has stalled indefinitely. Reasons are unclear, but Stiller and Witherspoon move on to other projects. Meanwhile, Crowe signs on to direct and rewrite the adaptation of Benjamin Mee’s memoir “We Bought a Zoo,” which he’d been circling since the previous winter.

March 2, 2011: “The Union,” Crowe’s HBO documentary about Elton John’s creative process, opens the Tribeca Film Festival.

Sept. 10, 2011: Crowe’s rockumentary “Pearl Jam Twenty” premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival. It airs on PBS’ “American Masters” one month later. Along the way, Crowe says he’d “consider” making a sequel to “Say Anything…,” and the entertainment press goes nuts. There is still no word on “Deep Tiki.”

October 2011: In a New York Times profile, Crowe reveals he plans to begin shooting his next film — from a script he finished two days before the interview occurred — in March 2012, with another movie planned after that. Befuddled journalists wonder whether the director is referring to “Deep Tiki,” the Marvin Gaye biopic to which he is tied or another project altogether.

Dec. 23, 2011: “We Bought a Zoo” opens, becoming Crowe’s first mainstream theatrical feature in six years. While doing press for “Zoo,” he says he cannot reveal what film will be his next, but teases it as “more of a straight-out comedy.”

July 30, 2012: After March comes and goes with no casting announcements, Deadline.com reports that Emma Stone has signed on to star in “untitled love story” that Crowe is directing for Sony. The article contains no mention of “Deep Tiki,” but Variety’s Jeff Sneider tweets on the same day that Crowe has rewritten the script and it is again gaining momentum at Sony. The movie’s sensibilities are said to be closely aligned with that of “Almost Famous” and “Jerry Maguire.”

Oct. 24, 2012: A “lengthy search” results in talks with Bradley Cooper, who is anticipating Oscar buzz for “Silver Linings Playbook,” to take on Stiller’s former role.

April 11, 2013: Rachel McAdams is in talks to play a “former lover of Cooper’s character,” according to Deadline.com, which again makes no mention of “Deep Tiki” in its report of the news.

July 23, 2013: In an interview with The Huffington Post, Cooper confirms he is in the movie and that it will begin shooting in September. He also lets it slip that Danny McBride has joined the cast.

August – October 2013: The rest of the cast (Bill Murray, Alec Baldwin, John Krasinski) rolls in.

Sept. 26, 2013: Crowe begins shooting what is now being referred to as “Untitled Hawaii Project.” No press release is sent to announce its start, with the director instead quietly posting a photo of a corresponding clapperboard on his blog. Reports clarify what we already know: This is an updated “Deep Tiki.” They also indicate the movie was also once titled “Volcano Romance.”

Feb. 14, 2014: Sony sets a Dec. 25 release date, leaving some pondering whether it could become an Oscar contender.

July 21, 2014: Sony delays the still-untitled film to May 2015. “Once we saw the film, we knew that it would make a perfect summer release. The movie is Cameron at his best,” Jeff Blake, chairman of worldwide marketing and distribution for Sony Pictures, says.

December 2014: In the wake of the massive Sony hack, Amy Pascal is found condemning the film in leaked emails. “It’s a wrap,” she says of any attempt to salvage the apparently dismal scores the movie received during test screenings. Pascal calls the script “ridiculous” and says it “never, not even once, ever works.” She criticizes producer Scott Rudin for not visiting the set or assisting during the editing process. “At least the marketing departments have something to sell. Looks big and glossy,” the email says. “We have this movie in for a lot of dough and we better look at that.”

Feb. 2, 2015: Sony announces the film will be titled “Aloha.”

Feb. 11, 2015: The first trailer debuts.

April 21, 2015: The soundtrack’s lineup is unveiled. It includes none of the songs from the playlist that circulated with the original script.

May 13, 2015: SlashFilm reports that the only junket will take place in London with select journalists in attendance, marking another omen for the film.

May 19, 2015: “It’s been months since those emails, and a ton of work has been done since then. The movie is really, really different,” a Sony executive tells Variety, referring to the testing results mentioned in Pascal’s email. “It’s going to be a lot more satisfying for audiences.” In the same breath, he warns people not to expect the next “Say Anything” or “Jerry Maguire.”

May 20, 2015: The Media Action Network for Asian Americans accuses the movie of “whitewashing” Hawaiian history by casting only white stars. The group likens “Aloha” to other Hawaii-set films like “The Descendants,” “50 First Dates” and “Pearl Harbor.” MANAA’s Guy Aoki slams Crowe for a tweet in which he said the movie enunciates the “rich history and culture of Hawaii.” The group lambastes the film’s few Asian-Pacific Islander characters, who are listed with names like “Indian pedestrian,” “upscale Japanese tourist” and “upscale restaurant guest.”

May 20, 2015: Upon inquiring, Sony tells The Huffington Post that Crowe and the cast will not be doing press in New York. On top of that, there is only one screening offered to critics and reviews are embargoed until 4 p.m. on May 28, mere hours before the film opens. (Studios typically offer several screening opportunities and at least a few days for reviews to percolate before something is released.)

May 26, 2015: Introducing “Aloha” at a Los Angeles press screening, Crowe reportedly says, “A lot’s been said, a lot’s been heard — some of it private, some of it public, some of it private that became public. But it’s always been a love letter.”

May 27, 2015: Sony counters MANAA’s claims in a statement: “While some have been quick to judge a movie they haven’t seen and a script they haven’t read, the film ‘Aloha’ respectfully showcases the spirit and culture of the Hawaiian people. Filmmaker Cameron Crowe spent years researching this project and many months on location in Hawaii, cultivating relationships with leading local voices. He earned the trust of many Hawaiian community leaders, including Dennis ‘Bumpy’ Kanahele, who plays a key role in the film.”

May 28, 2015: A source with ties to the project tells Bloomberg Business that Sony shelled out $ 20 million for the marketing campaign. (For comparison’s sake, the average cost of marketing a studio movie in 2007 was $ 36 million. Many blockbusters wind up spending hundreds of millions on their worldwide campaigns. 2013’s under-performing “The Lone Ranger,” for example, cost a reported $ 150 million in global marketing and distribution.) Box-office forecasts expect the movie to generate $ 8 to $ 10 million in its first weekend, with the studio hoping its 2,800-screen debut could give way to potential sleeper-hit status as the summer unfolds.

May 28, 2015: The first reviews trickle in a couple of hours ahead of the embargo lift, and they are not kind.

May 29, 2015: “Aloha” opens.

Kardashian Throwback Photo Proves Kim Has Always Been Camera Ready

Turns out Kim Kardashian loved the camera long before she became the internet’s selfie queen.

In a throwback photo posted to Kris Jenner’s Instagram on Friday, an adolescent Kim poses alongside Kourtney Kardashian and two friends in a very model-esque pose.

Work it, girl.

All these years later, Kim and Kourtney’s younger sister Kendall Jenner actually is a veritable supermodel. Which makes us wonder: might there be some fun old footage still to be unearthed that hints at her future walking the runway? Aside from old episodes of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” that is.

Taking Pause and Tending to the Roses we Have Been Gifted

Stop and Smell the Roses

The House had The rose garden that the garden club ladies made mention of on many occasion. They tended to the urban myth that roses are impossible to care for unless you are deemed and esteemed, an expert. The promise of mold and strange bacterial fungi will ravage the gifts planted in 1908 that was bestowed upon me when the title papers were signed, if I did not take heed.

Thankfully I did not register what They, the astute members of the G Club were talking about or I may have reconsidered moving in. I was already wary to the tending of plants flowers and all that. I like them. I just never had a desire or a talent for tending to them. I did not come into this world with a curiosity or a passion nor develop the intellect for growing anything other than my three sweet peas now turned teens. What to do with the pressure? How do I keep the roses alive? Maybe hire an expert to tend to the thirty plus bushes now in my care?

For sheer self preservation, I decided not to listen for the time being. Nothing new-check out my early report cards. I collect two large baskets and pair of gloves and some clippers. In full bloom and nearly my height I breathe in their magnificence, for starters. I could get used to this. I hand crank the rusty -may need a tetanus shot-lever to start the water drip to the roots-evidently the water can’t spray directly on the roses and it must be done when the sun isn’t overtaking us. I had listened up a little. It’s 6 am and my people are all tucked in. I am bare foot in the dirt. I clip at leaf 5 or below-not remembering why this is the rule but it’s one of the ten thousand Rose Rules. I have a basket of dead roses and a basket to fill my house up with. Each morning I collect ten or more vases worth. I need more vases and more friends to share these beauties with. Each bush is unique. I loved to collect the rainbows and sort them out like I am mastering a painting-something new with each piece of rose art. They become my paints and my canvas. I fall in love with them, well most of them. I talk to them-mostly about my children and what I am up to that day or evening. It seems cat lady strange to say but I feel like they listen. I keep my tending simple so I keep on with it. Clip, chat and make rose art in as many vases as I can find.

I decide nothing chemical can touch this treasure of mine. I keep clipping and loving them and that is it. I am not holding my breathe for an invitation to the Garden Club-what would I have to offer them? I love my roses and I tend to them? That’s it. And they would have a list of the ten thousand to do’s I missed to do to tend them. I am not a good meeting go-er anyway.

Three bushes withered away by July. I am to blame-Professor Plum did it I wish to say-but no I did. I didn’t love them. I was not thankful for those lost treasures. They did not Lift me up-they had no scent and they didn’t feel like a part of our magical world. I really didn’t like those few bushes -I could not connect with them. I neglected them with my lack of attention and appreciation.

Funny how my rose garden became a little lab experiment. When we neglect having intention and thankfulness with our hearts toward something-it will wilt and eventually die. I was very very intentional when I met my next roses to fill the spaces of the gone bushes. We are quite famous for being the City of Roses so I spent hours up at our public gardens and breathed in and took photographs of the names of my favorites of this plethora of options-a bouquet buffet to chose from. I found the right ones and brought them home from the rose garden store place. Yes I play favorites with my roses, I can not help being more drawn to a color or fragrance, yet I do love them all now. And they thrive.

My simplistic tending routine brought me beauty and such peace that had escaped me in past days. I spent a decade racing around like a lunatic and now I get to do what my mamma always should-ed me to do-stop and smell the roses. And I did everyday from May through mid October. For ten years and now the baton has been passed once again. My roses Lifted me up with their beauty and their fragrance and their patience with my style of tending and appreciating.

Have you stopped and smelled the roses lately? How do you tend non conventionally to your garden ? Your life?

What Life Could Have Been

I almost wasn’t born. I almost didn’t get adopted. I almost got delivered to the wrong family at the airport. I almost didn’t get to where I am today. But here I am, happy and grateful. My story starts in Romania in 1992, where I was immediately handed off to an orphanage after birth. Then three years later, I left for the United States to live with the only people I’ve ever called family.

For me, there were always stories that danced in my head about my secret past that resembled a princess fairytale. None of those stories were ever true, but I’ve always been imaginative. My imagination and my impulsiveness have always gotten me in trouble, so when I was 17, I secretly contacted the adoption lawyer who made my adoption possible. At the time, discussing adoption records with minors was prohibited, so my parents were notified.

The process of finding my birth parents taught me so much about myself, adoption and family. Here are four things I learned from the experience:

1. Great parents are those who tell their children how special they are and support their dreams, even if they don’t completely understand them. These are my parents, and they’ve raised me to believe that I’ve always been wanted and I’m special. They’ve been so gracious to help me find my voice and story. They were the ones who didn’t let me quit when I had difficulties learning how to read and write.

My parents understood that I was extremely curious about my past and agreed to take the steps to help me find out more about where I came from. Within a year, we had tickets to Romania and we were met by a friend of the adoption lawyer who worked as our translator and guide.

2. Nothing can prepare you for the realization of what your life could have been. Driving in a manual transmission vehicle along dirt roads and hilly terrain, past men on haystacks and stubborn cows, was not ideal. When we pulled up to the village, a boy on a horse led us to their home. We followed in the car. I was petrified, scared and sad. We then stopped in front of a small fence made out of thick tree branches. Three people greeted us: a man, a woman, and a little girl. None of them looked like me, and yet the the little girl and I immediately connected. The woman was overly eager and the man was reserved. These people would have been my direct family, if they had not given me up at birth. They told us about their lives and why I had been given to an orphanage.

3. People can be happy in their current conditions, even if they don’t align with your perception of happiness. I was surprised to see that they were happy in their home, which was a small brick structure of two rooms.Their hands were leathery from hard work under the grueling sun. They had livestock on the side of the house and a patch of olive trees and grapevines out back. It took me a while to understand that circumstances are not as important as being with the ones who you love. Their way of life was much different than mine, and seeing the remarkable difference was important. That could have been me.

4. Life is an accumulation of events that directly and indirectly affect each other. There are so many hypothetical “what-ifs” to my story and multiple chances that could have prohibited me from living the life that I have today. Every time I look back on my trip to Romania, I find true strength and motivation in how far I’ve come. I’m truly grateful to all the people who’ve helped me become the person I am today.

The Cast of Pitch Perfect 2 Has Been Killing It on the Red Carpet

Who’s excited for Pitch Perfect 2? The film opens today, but before you rush off to your local movie theater, check out how the cast has been killing it on the red carpet recently.

For the world premiere of the movie, Anna Kendrick wore a sultry one-shoulder Stella McCartney cutout gown in royal blue and purple.

At a photo call for the film in Rome, director Elizabeth Banks went with this black-and-white Donna Karan skirt and top.

She was spotted in Berlin for another photo call wearing a multicolor Peter Pilotto dress.

Rebel Wilson mixed a blue top with a black-and-white checkered skirt, which we love. File that away for your next work outfit idea.

Brittany Snow went the elegant route in an Edition by Georges Chakra gown with sheer cutouts and paneling for the L.A. premiere.

Anna Camp looked way edgier than the character she plays in the film in a Philipp Plein minidress.

Alexis Knapp wore a red-hot Lorena Sarbu gown with a high-low satin skirt for the world premiere.

Kelley Jakle went for an angelic-with-an-edge style at the L.A. premiere of the film.

Finding the Answer That’s Been There All Along: How to Discover the Direction With Wings

True desire is where everything begins.

I have a story to share with you about decorating my living room that isn’t really about decorating my living room. It’s about a miracle. It’s about getting unstuck. It’s about your career, your marriage, your weight, or maybe your living room.

I had been looking at my living room for months, feeling meh on the high end of the spectrum, and I am suffering a small plague on the other. Hoping for creative ideas, I started looking at houses online, even homes in other states. It felt a little bit like scoping out Match.com while your husband gropes through the refrigerator, commenting on how you could arrange the shelves differently. Romantic walks on beaches. I’d be checking out the dimensions of that living room, then noticing my own. I quickly learned, that every living room looks great with 900-foot ceilings or wall to wall windows and an ocean view. I have neither.

Paul, my partner, started dreaming about ripping up the ceiling and creating a loft above. Awesome, but way beyond what my overwhelmed mind and bank account had in mind. Realizing that really remodeling was just creating stress, Paul offered magic words: “What if there’s just one simple thing you can do, just to change the energy? What if there’s one thing that starts moving us in the right direction?” So I started looking around and imagining a new shade of paint, couch, or an unusual light fixture. But nothing clicked.

I felt tangled and impatient, a bad combination for courting revelations. Maybe you’ve felt this, with more important life decisions: I wanted change, but I didn’t want to put time into it. I wanted change, but I didn’t want to put money into it. I wanted change, but I didn’t even know what I really wanted to do. Pity our psychotherapists and God.

So I returned to my original desire. I want this room to feel great to me. That’s all I knew. “Don’t think about this room,” Paul suggested. “Just think about what would feel like what you want.”

I started thinking about what did feel great. I have a back room, an extension to our home built back in the 1920s. I love its energy. It’s got a quirky, formidable, black wood burning stove on its own little brick platform. But the best part of that room is an entire wall of exposed brick, uneven texture and happiness, worn solidity and a poetic karma you can’t find in new construction. I fell in love with that room years ago, winking its old house charm at me. It’s why I bought the house.

“I’d love something like that, an exposed brick wall,” I said to Paul, as though he could magically order one up out of a Home Beautiful catalog and have it shipped or maybe blink his eyes like a cartoon genie. It was preposterous. True desires often are.

But you know how when you start to focus on something you want, you start to notice all the reasons you want it? I began to notice movie scenes with people who had cool lives and living rooms. They often had exposed brick walls. Naturally this meant they had superior conversations, cheese, sex, iPads and income levels. It was just subliminal shorthand.

One day, standing in the living room, I was again talking to Paul about painting walls. Paul looked like he wasn’t listening (which by the way would never happen to people who lived in cool living rooms). He was staring at the fireplace in the living room and the large plaster wall (which I’d painted purple, “blueberry yogurt” says a friend) above it. It jutted out from the rest of the blueberry yogurt walls. “You know,” he began. “That wall that juts out is probably plaster over the chimney to the fireplace.” He stared intently. “Mmm,” I said as though he was beginning to explain the periodic tables to me, when, really, I was more interested in end tables.

“Well, if it is the original chimney to the house, then it’s probably brick.” I still didn’t follow his thinking yet, because, there is the small possibility that I was too busy judging him. So he spelled it out. “If we break off that plaster wall, you might have an exposed brick wall.”

Could it be? I was afraid to get my hopes up. But even the thought of the possibility was a rush. We decided to try our theory. We have a large wooden Buddha face from a Thai temple who hangs on the wall above the fireplace. We decided to poke a tiny hole in the plaster wall, figuring that even if we were wrong, Buddha could hide the emptiness and imperfection. It seemed appropriate.

Paul chipped away a hole, kind of like a baby bird pecking through a shell. Sure enough, there was a tiny hint of red brick, a rustic ruby, peeking back at us from the hole. It was like a bindi, the holy red dot on an Indian woman’s forehead, and to me, it was every bit as devotional. I gasped. My crazy, improbable desire might actually come true.

The next day, after an all-day meeting, I came home to find Paul covered in the white dust of plaster. He looked like a crazed baker. He smiled at me as I beheld his “cake.” We had an exposed brick wall above the fireplace. Worn out brick. Textured brick. Brick that changed the whole vibe of the living room, even more than I imagined. I couldn’t believe it. Who needed a fantasy genie or a stinking catalog? Real life was the real miracle.

The answer had been there all along. It had always been there. I’ve lived in this house for 17 years. It’s always been there. This house is over 100 years old. Really, it’s always been there. But I never would have discovered it if I kept looking at the room I thought was there. In A Course in Miracles, there is the teaching that a miracle is about “undoing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence.” In English, that means a miracle, the presence of a loving perspective or resolution, is always present. But you have a belief in the way. You have an assumption in the way. You have a way of seeing in the way. I had a thick purple plaster wall in the way.

I was trying to decorate the room I believed existed. But it was only when I asked what I really wanted that I found a direction that had wings. It wasn’t about fitting a solution into my existing circumstances. It was about finding an answer or direction that changed my existing circumstances. So, are you ready to design your life? Never mind your current situation. What do you really want?

As a creative career and success coach, I see this repeatedly. I ask someone, “What do you love to do?” They tell me “I have an MBA and I’m in advertising.” Or “I’m a paralegal.” They tell me what they’ve been. What they’re trained for. Their age. They do not tell me about the destiny that is hunting them down. They do not initially admit that they’d like to leave it all and ride an elephant in Thailand. They do not mention the movie script that runs in their veins. Or their instinct to start a foundation.

“What do you love?” I ask. They treat me like I’m pretending to be Santa Claus, despite the fact that I am Jewish as well as serious as chicken soup about this question. I know that their real desire is the only way we will ever find the truth. The truth is there. The truth has energy to take them into the fierce lives in which they belong. Every limit they believe is true, will bow before the real truth within them. There is a truth. There is always a truth.

There is always a brick wall underneath your plaster. There is always the presence of everything you want, covered by the familiar. It’s waiting for you. It’s been there all along. There’s an astonishment beneath your confusion and habitual way of thinking. There is another way to see this situation. Let go of your grip on what you think the situation is. There is always love awaiting you, beyond every single fear.

Hey, want to discover more about YOUR true desire? Join me for a FREE coaching call “Your Desire is Your Destiny: How to Get There!” on May 13th (or sign up to get the recording) It’s my gift to you, awesome one. Who else do you know that might enjoy/need this? Please share the mojo because we want to create a world where everyone is doing what they’re meant to do. “See” you there!

Lea Michele Remembers Cory Monteith On What Would Have Been His 33rd Birthday

Cory Monteith may be gone, but he’s not forgotten, not by Lea Michele, who is keeping his memory alive on what would have been his 33rd birthday.

On Monday, the former “Glee” actress shared a photo of Monteith sitting behind a drum kit:

Monteith was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room on July 13, 2013, after he overdosed on a toxic mix of heroin and alcohol. The actor, who was 31 at the time, had been dating Michele for more than a year.

Oakland’s New Mayor Has Been Driving Around Town In A Giant Burning Man Snail Car

Libby Schaaf may very well be the first mayor of a major American city to ride around town in a flame-shooting Burning Man art car shaped like a giant snail. She notes that she may also be the only mayor of a major American city to have gone to Burning Man.

“To be fair, I went a long, long time ago,” she told The Huffington Post of her visit to the annual celebration of art and creative expression in the Nevada desert. “But the Burning Man community is a complete asset to the larger Oakland community.”

Voters in Oakland, California, elected Schaaf to the Bay Area city’s highest office in November. As part of her victory lap, she drove the snail car, the brainchild of local artist and blacksmith Jon Sarriugarte, through the streets to meet with constituents. On Monday, she drove her husband and two children to her inaugural ceremony downtown in the same mutant vehicle.

snail 4

Schaaf arrives at her inauguration with her family at Oakland’s Paramount Theater on January 5.

And this Sunday, the snail will be out and about in all its fiery glory at Schaaf’s inaugural festival, which also features a parade of other Burning Man art cars along with fire dancers, musicians and food and drink purveyors — all of whom call Oakland home.

“It’s not your daddy’s inaugural ball,” Schaaf, a lifelong Oakland resident and graduate of the city’s public school system, said with a laugh.

Sarriugarte told HuffPost he’s been a longtime Schaaf supporter, having first met her while she was serving as an Oakland city councilwoman a handful of years ago. He volunteered for several mayoral campaign events, using the snail car as a conversation piece to attract voters.

“We would hold signs out on the street right next to a giant snail car shooting fire out of it,” he said. “I joked that if she won, we should drive her around in it.” Team Schaaf didn’t take it as a joke.

snail 2

Schaaf with Sarriugarte.

One of the reasons Sarriugarte is such a fan of the mayor, he said, is because of her pledge to reinforce Oakland’s burgeoning community of artists and “makers.” “We have a wonderful make community,” he said. “I want to see industrial areas set aside for making and producing things … [Schaaf] is really good at taking feedback from the community.”

For her part, Schaaf said she pledges to build programs that foster the growth of local arts institutions, without pursuing developments that grow to be so big they eventually get pushed out. “What makes Oakland Oakland is our diversity and our incredible arts scene,” she said. “Our gritty industrial flavor, as well as our long history of embracing social movements. We are an incredibly creative place.”

Schaaf noted that one of her final initiatives as a councilwoman was to champion a law that requires private developers in Oakland give 1 percent of their project costs to benefit the public arts sector. The money helps create performance arts spaces, galleries and installations. And with nearby San Francisco becoming more unaffordable by the minute, many developers are looking toward Oakland as their next frontier.

snail 3

Schaaf and her family greet supporters.

But Schaaf says it’s essential not to let new developments squeeze out the existing communities that make her city unique. “I’m very aware that we cannot sell our soul for growth,” she said. “Part of that soul is our artist community. That balance of growth and revitalization but preserving our Oaklandishness — our secret sauce — that’s an acute awareness I bring to this position.”

Only a handful of stars are well known by simply one name. Madonna. Prince. Cher. And, as fans of 1980s teen pop music would be quick to point out, Tiffany.

Three decades ago, Tiffany rose to fame with such hits as “Could’ve Been” and her famous cover of “I Think We’re Alone Now.” But long before the single-named celeb sold four million copies of her debut album, she was just 10-year-old Tiffany Darwish singing in bars in Nashville.

“I wasn’t really allowed to be there, so it was a quick little get-up-and-do-a-little-jam,” Tiffany tells “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” in the above video. “Nobody really wanted to give me a record deal. They were kind of like, ‘Come back when you’re older.'”

A few years later, Tiffany met George Tobin, who would become her producer, and her career as an artist was starting to take shape. The first order of business? Choosing her name.

“They were going to call me Tiffany Williams at first. My last name, Darwish… that’s just not acceptable!” she says with a laugh. “I kind of just said, ‘What about just Tiffany?'”

Then 15, Tiffany embarked on tour of shopping malls across America, where her sudden popularity soon created total chaos. “When it got to be bigger than life and people were actually being shoved against barricades and it wasn’t safe and we were actually being shut down, I actually started crying,” she says.

After her debut album hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts, Tiffany felt pressure to continue that momentum. “The next album, you’re rushed in the studio to re-record something and get it out there as soon as possible,” she explains. “It kind of lost some of its charm.”

She continued putting out albums, but never quite had the same commercial success as her initial release. Tiffany’s music career went through a few more ups and downs over the next several years. As she matured and evolved as an artist, Tiffany later became determined to shed the “teen queen” image that came with fame.

“I think I’ve always been put in a box, that I’m Tiffany, the girl from the mall tour,” she says. “Then I did Playboy.”

In 2002, Tiffany posed nude for the magazine, to the shock of many. But, as the 43-year-old wife and mother now explains, she had several clear reasons for doing it.

“I was actually going through a divorce — it rocks your world. It takes your confidence away,” she says. “[Posing for Playboy] was a quick confidence-booster. And, it was shock value.

“Everybody wants to talk to me,” Tiffany continues. “If I can turn that into music and go, ‘Yeah, remember that little thing I do…?’, it works.”

“Oprah: Where Are They Now?” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET, and returns with all-new episodes in February. Find OWN on your TV.

It’s Been Handled: We Played Office Dress-Up in The Limited x Scandal Collection

Like you, the Glamour team watches Scandal and rehashes while grabbing coffee in the office (Nikki’s also a pretty prolific real-time tweeter should you need to discuss in the heat of the moment). It’s been so fun seeing Olivia Pope wear actual pieces from The Limited‘s collection with the show that I asked whether we could get some of the items into the office for us to play around with and, you know, maybe pretend we were having our own super-serious gladiator moments.

Nikki got to wear this amazing black and white trench, totally spotted on Olivia in one of her power-striding moments. “The minute I saw it I fell in love,” she said. “It’s a fun new take on the traditional trench coat, and I’d ideally wear it with a chunky knit sweater, gray jeans, and black pumps.” She took it off long enough for a few of us to also try it on and we were collectively impressed by how well-made it felt and flattering it was on everyone. It’s sadly sold out online, but was so fab it’s worth a trip to your local brick and mortar to see if they’ve still got any in stock.

Julie and I both squealed when we pulled this plaid poncho out of the bag. Olivia Pope aside, she’d been searching for the silhouette and I was happy she got to try it out with this one. If you think figuring out what to wear it with would be tricky, don’t: Julie came to work in a sweater dress and leggings, not expecting to top it with a cape, and it worked beautifully. You can shop it here.

“I felt so professional and take-charge in this blazer, and I loved how versatile it was,” Anna told me. “You could wear it open or zipped up, but either way, I say pair with black pants and you’re ready to get things ‘handled.” It was one of the first pieces from the collaboration I remember Kerry Washington actually wearing and it definitely gave Anna the same sort of instant boss-lady polish (a good reason to keep it on the back of your chair in case you’re called to an impromptu meeting). Like the trench, it’s sold-out online but worth seeing if you can locate locally.

I loved this graphic black and white top on Olivia/Kerry and was excited for Lindsey to try it on. We played around with how to style it and what felt right to her. On the show, it was worn closed like a blouse, but Lindsey decided she actually liked it open as a little jacket. Either way: cute (and available).

I was all about this off-the-shoulder sweater since it’s a major trend I’m loving in real life and captures the sexy-but-cozy style that’s perfect for a winter date night (or curling up on the couch alone with a long-stemmed glass of red, per Miss Pope). The top was long enough that our photographer actually asked me if it was a dress and that coverage means it could work with leggings. To dress it up for the office, I skipped jeans and paired with leather leggings.

Have you seen any of the collaboration pieces in person? If you haven’t, you seriously should stop by the next time you’re in the mall.

This New Take on Traditional Plaid Is Exactly What Your Closet Has Been Missing!

It all started with Chloe’s pre-fall presentation. Bright whites and deep blacks formed a pattern we vaguely recognized as plaid but wasn’t quite the tartan of our past. A few months later, a similar geometric pattern covered everything from long-line blazers to menswear trousers in the 3.1 Phillip Lim fall show. It wasn’t until Rosie Assoulin’s presentation that same season that our love solidified as we watched a model walk out in the most gorgeous cream, navy, and white sweater we STILL have on our wish list. Yes, we are talking about windowpane plaid, and, yes, we are officially obsessed.

Windowpane plaid is this season’s must-have clean, refreshingly modern take on our favorite traditional pattern. Plaid swoops in with the autumn season like florals in the springtime, but we are always seeking ways to mix it up in a different way. In every silhouette under the sun, windowpane plaid is going to be our new favorite pattern for years to come.

Have you been searching for that new fall piece that’s just so classic but with a hint of modernity? Shop some of our windowpane loves below—and don’t wait to mix it into your cold-weather wardrobe!

What do you think of this new take on traditional plaid? Will you try it this season, or have you already?

Steve Harvey On Overcoming The Odds: ‘I’ve Lived In A Car. I’ve Been Homeless.’ (VIDEO)

Most people know comedian Steve Harvey as a talk show host, radio personality, and entertainer. What you may not know is that he was once a college dropout who drifted from one dead-end job to the next, even living out of his car for a time. He knows what it’s like to be down and out.

Now, at age 57, Harvey wants to share the lessons he’s learned the hard way. In the above clip from his upcoming appearance on “Oprah’s Lifeclass,” he sits down with Oprah to discuss his new book, Act Like a Success, Think Like a Success: Discovering Your Gift and the Way to Life’s Riches.

Harvey jokes that he writes “very simple.” “You say a word to me that has more than three syllables in it; you have wasted a lot of time. Get your thesaurus out and find a lesser word.”

He explains that he wanted everyone to understand his book because he’s been at “every level there is.”

“I have flunked out of college,” Harvey says. “I have been divorced, messed up my life. I’ve lived in a car. I’ve been homeless. I’ve been written off, told I wasn’t going to be nothing. “

Harvey admits he’s made a “complete mess of my life” in the past.

“So I know what it is to have no money,” he says. “I know what it is to start at the bottom. I know what it is to get back up. I know what it is to overcome. I know what it is to win. I know what losses feel like. I know what failure does — I know how to use it to your advantage.”

“And you know how to reinvent yourself,” Oprah adds.

“Man, you can’t be afraid of that,” Harvey says.

Harvey’s appearance on “Oprah’s Lifeclass” airs Sunday, September 7 at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.

If You’ve Been Rushing Around and Multitasking, Get Ready for the Consequences

Most people think running around as fast as they can trying to get things done, doing multiple things at once, results in more efficiency and productivity. How many people would be surprised to learn that they are actually creating inefficiency and lack of productivity? Impossible? Well, ask yourself how many details you overlook and wrong decisions you make when you’re on turbo speed? Then, ask yourself how much time it takes you to go back and correct all the errors that were made?

The fact is, we accomplish a lot less when we’re in a hurry and dividing our attention between several different things at one time. The reason for this can easily be explained from an energetic point of view. You would naturally assume that the faster you are going, the faster your energy vibration, and therefore, you are attracting the same faster, higher vibration of the things around you. This type of raised vibration is aligned with happiness, peace, joy, and a general ease of flow to life. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

The truth is that our bodies and minds working at a breakneck pace is experienced on a frequency that is very low and slow. This means that we align ourselves with other things that are of a low vibration, like anger, fear, worry, and frustration. When we’re rushing around and not being mindful of our thoughts and actions, we are creating more of what we’re trying to avoid. This is when mistakes happen, decisions are poor, and nothing seems to go right.

Take a moment throughout your day and ask yourself if you feel centered or off-balance. If you feel centered, then you’re calm, in control of your emotions, and aware of everything that’s happening around you, which you are able to handle with efficiency. If you feel off-balance, then you are scattered, stressed, and everything you touch turns into a big mess…one thing goes wrong, then another, then another until you wish you hadn’t gotten out of bed that day!

If you do feel off-balance during the day, here are some ways you can slow down, and therefore, raise your vibration, so that you accomplish much more and experience a peaceful life.

1) Stop in Your Tracks

Whatever you are frantically doing, no matter what it is, you need to stop immediately. If you don’t, you’re headed down a very slippery slope. Nothing good can come from frantic energy. You are just asking for trouble. Know that whatever it is you are doing will get done when, and if, it is meant to get done. Recognize that you have been thrown off balance and need to collect yourself and get centered before you unwittingly pull in negative circumstances.

2) Step Out of the Room

If there are people around you, there is a distinct possibility that you are picking up on their energy, which may be carrying with it all kinds of issues that they are having at the moment. So step out of the room in order to break the energy, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and imagine yourself with white light around you like a shield. All you’re doing is creating the intention for yourself of being your own sovereign being of energy and not absorbing it off of others.

3) Trust Life

Trust and have faith that everything works out the way it is supposed to, and that, you don’t need to control each detail of a situation. Believe me, life will go on and time will pass whether you are in charge or not. Trust that all will happen in its own timing, and you will get where you are going at the perfect moment.

Be sure to remember that when your mind and body are flying around, so to speak, be aware that it’s happening and breathe. Because in that moment, you are choosing your alignment – your point of attraction to all things. Simply taking action to be calm and mindful will attract the perfect solutions and situations to come in for you at the perfect time.

“The Other Woman” Should Have Been Better

Movie Review Jackie K Cooper
“The Other Woman” (20th Century Fox)

Several years ago Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton starred in a hit movie titled “The First Wives’ Club”. This movie explored the impact of husbands who cheated on their wives. Now we have “The Other Woman,” a movie that handles basically the same theme, but this time out stars Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton. It is not nearly as funny or emotionally impactful as the “First Wives” film but is entertaining just the same.

The film starts with Carly (Diaz) dating Mark (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). They seem to be the perfect couple as they match in temperament and passion. One day Mark tells Carly he can’t keep a date with her because his housekeeper called and his home in Connecticut has a plumbing problem.

Carly decides to surprise Mark and show up in Connecticut. When she gets there she is shocked when a woman answers the door. She states she is Mark’s wife Kate (Mann). Carly is totally embarrassed and heads back to New York in disgrace. The next day Kate shows up at her workplace and wants to talk about the situation.

Later in the film a second woman is discovered. Her name is Amber (Upton) and she is also involved with Mark. She becomes the third friend in the group and they all plot their revenge – together.

The movie is supposed to focus on Carly and her actions but in truth Kate, as played by Mann, steals the show. She is the true comedienne of the group both with natural comedic timing and a knack for physical comedy. Upton plays the dumb sexy blonde to perfection, and Diaz is left to struggle to keep up with her co-stars. Both Diaz and Mann are to be commended for sharing the screen with the luscious Upton.

The humor seems a little forced in this film with too much emphasis being placed on bathroom humor literally. Most of the good jokes were shown in the trailer and very little new was left to be found in the full film.

Nicki Minaj appears as Carly’s assistant Lydia and looks great in the role. She does, however, have a way of swallowing her words so that what she says is mostly unintelligible. She would have been more impressive if you could have understood her.

The movie is rated PG-13 for profanity and sexual situations.

“The Other Woman” is not a bad movie; it just isn’t as good as it should have been. There was so much potential for comedy that is missed, and so many emotional moments that could have been included. What you are left with is a movie that entertains but is soon forgotten.

I scored “The Other Woman” a cheated 5 out of 10.

Mae Whitman doesn’t want to Tinker with the way Disneytoon Studios has been running its “Fairies” film franchise

It was early 2008 when Mae Whitman got this mysterious call from her voiceover agent, Melissa.

“She was telling me that Disney had this very important project but that they wouldn’t tell Melissa what it actually was. All she knew that that they were eager for me to come in and audition for this part,” Whitman recalled during a 2012 interview.

So Mae went in for this audition. Where — once she got in front of that mic– Whitman discovered that she was just supposed to read a couple of very vaguely-written lines. There were nothing on these pages that gave Mae any information about the character that she was supposed to be voicing. Even stranger, the guys behind the glass in the recording booth were being very tight-lipped as well.

“I got none of the guidance that you typically get in a voiceover recording session. ‘Could you please say that line again only faster?,’ ‘Could you make your character sound more excited or happier?’ They just sat back and listened,” Whitman continued. “And since I’ve been doing voiceover work since I was five, which is why I’m very comfortable in a recording booth … Well, I just decided to be myself. Read those lines in my normal speaking voice.”

Ah, but what Mae didn’t know was that this wasn’t just any audition. After announcing back in June of 2006 that Brittany Murphy was going to be the official voice of Tinker Bell for a new series of Disney Fairies home premieres, Disneytoon Studios had now decided to go another way with this character. And the reason that they’d called Whitman in was that they were now considering her as someone who could possibly voice Peter Pan’s pixie pal.

“From what we’ve already seen of Tinker Bell in Disney’s 1953 animated feature, we knew that this character was curious. That she’s fun. She’s feisty. She’s super-loyal to Peter. Not to mention able to get angry. So we really needed to find a voice that could capture all of those emotions that we already knew about Tinker Bell without her even speaking,” explained Peggy Holmes, the director of Secret of the Wings & the soon-to-be-released The Pirate Fairy. “So we needed to find an actress that could portray that range of emotions. And Mae Whitman — thankfully — had that range. She can work onstage. She can work on film. She can work on television. And she can work in voiceover. And it’s all that experience that gave her the depth that we need for this iconic character.”

And when Whitman found out that she was being offered the opportunity to voice Tinker Bell, she freaked.

“Now you have to understand that — when I was growing up — Peter Pan was my favorite Disney movie. So to now be part of the team that gets to go back to Never Land and have all these new adventures with characters that I’ve loved since childhood … Well, it’s honestly like a dream come true,” Mae enthused. “So for me, this job is definitely filled with love.”

Mind you, at this point, Whitman now has six Disney Fairies films & TV specials under her belt. And having spent all that time in Pixie Hollow, has the pixie dust now begun to fade for her?

“To be honestly, no,” Mae stated. “What’s great about the people at Disneytoon Studios is that — with each of these projects — they’ve then built out the world of Pixie Hollow bit by bit. With each film, they’ve brought in new characters. Better yet, they’ve allowed Tinker Bell and her friends to change and grow.”

“I mean, in the first Disney Fairies film, Tinker Bell didn’t even want to be a tinker. She wanted to change her talent. But at this point in the Disney Fairies film series, Tink is hugely proud of being a tinker fairy. She wouldn’t change her talent for anything in the world,” Whitman said. “That’s what I love about working on this series. The lessons carry over from movie to movie. More to the point, Tinker Bell herself changes from film & film. She’s always changing and growing.”

And speaking of growing … After spending the past five projects exploring this one teeny tiny corner of Never Land, the folks at Disneytoon Studios have decided to use The Pirate Fairy as an excuse to finally leave Pixie Hollow and go off & explore more of the island.

“The initial idea was to do a road trip adventure with Tinker Bell and her friends and this adventure dealt with a rogue fairy who was experimenting with pixie dust,” explained Jeffrey M. Howard, the screenwriter on “The Pirate Fairy.” “But once we had the idea of putting pirates into this ‘Disney Fairies’ film … Well, it only seemed natural to include the most famous Never Land pirate of all, Captain Hook.”

Now do keep in mind that this is a far younger version of James Bartholomew Hook than we saw in Disney’s 1953 version of Peter Pan. But the story team at Disneytoon Studios actually turned this to their advantage by making The Pirate Fairy the very first time this Disney Villain fought using a hook or got chomped in the butt by Tic Toc the crocodile. And if you sit through the credits of this Disney Fairies film, you actually get to see that fateful moment where Hook first meets Mr. Smee.

And for someone like Mae Witman, who’s been a Peter Pan fan for as long as she can remember, doing voicework on a film where Tink and her friends actually visit Skull Rock and then do battle on a flying pirate ship that’s being powered by pixie dust … Well, you just know that this has to be a thrill.

“I just love that I get to be a part of this legacy at Disney,” Whitman admitted. “I mean, back in September of 2012, I got to be part of this D23 event which honored 75 years of Feature Animation. Which was where I was supposed to be paneling with Margaret Kerry — who was the live-action model for this character back in the early 1950s — and Ginny Mack — who Walt personally chose as the face model for Tinker Bell.”

“Now I’m backstage with Peggy Holmes, waiting to go. And just then it hits me that I’m now actually part of this Disney legacy. That I’m now one of the women who’s been entrusted with keeping the character of Tinker Bell alive & magical,” Mae remembered. “And I got so emotionally overwhelmed at that moment that Peggy actually had to walk me around for a little while and calm me down a little.”

“I just hope that — 60 years from now — when Disney’s putting together panels to promote the new holographic Tinker Bell movies that they’ll be making then that I’ll look as good as Margaret & Ginny did at that D23 presentation,” Whitman laughed.

Star Warhols Is The Nerdy Pop Art Mashup You’ve Been Waiting For

A (not so) long time ago, in a galaxy (not so) far, far away, one revolutionary artist decided to collapse the distinction between high art and pop culture, prized masterpiece and consumer object. The result: “Star Warhols,”

The faux pop art series, combining George Lucas’ space odyssey with Warhol’s soup can obsession, is the brainchild of artist Vincent Vermeij, a Netherlands based artist who goes by Chungkong. The series imagines what would happen if Campbell’s chicken noodle was replaced with the colors and patterns of Yoda, Darth Vader, R2-D2 and the gang, merging two highly obsessed over worlds we never thought we’d see collide.

For more of Chungkong’s inspired mashups, check out this series of Superhero Ice Pops. Enjoy the images below and may the chicken noodle be with you!
