Nike Gets Naomi Osaka, Adidas Moves on With Beyoncé

Tennis superstar Naomi Osaka is now playing on Team Nike — although some were looking for her to go a different direction in the ultracompetitive world of sports marketing deals.
Nike revealed its partnership with Japanese-born Osaka, the world’s number-one women’s single tennis player, on Thursday. But fans will have to wait until the Stuttgart Grand Prix, which begins April 22, to see the 21-year-old tennis player on the courts in Nike gear.
The news came as a bit of a surprise as many thought Osaka was courting a new corporate beau.
In September, after Osaka nabbed the U.S. Open title from Serena Williams, Osaka was rumored to be in talks with rival Adidas for an apparel endorsement worth an estimated 6.5 million pounds, or $ 8.5 million. She already had a deal with Adidas, but the rumored arrangement would have made the tennis star the highest-paid female athlete ever to sign with Adidas. Osaka was also seen sporting Adidas apparel as recently as January while competing in the Australian Open.
While Nike nabbed Osaka, the jilted Adidas had some blockbuster news of its own — which it chose to release the same day the Nike-Osaka tie-up was announced.

Courtside Cuties! Beyoncé and JAY-Z Enjoy a Date Night Cheering on the Warriors

After sharing the stage at Coachella for the past two weekendsBeyoncé and JAY-Z were happy to remain on the sidelines for a kids-free date night.

The couple, who share 6-year-old daughter Blue Ivy and 10-month-old twins Sir and Rumi, cheered on the Golden State Warriors as they faced the New Orleans Pelicans in Saturday night’s NBA playoffs game. They sat courtside, watching as the Warriors pulled off the win.

Beyoncé, 36, chose a white outfit for the night out with her husband, donning a dress with a black band highlighting her waist and a jacket draped off her shoulders. She finished off the look with a small purse and strappy heels, wearing her hair in a curly half-up ‘do. Meanwhile, the rapper went for an all-black ensemble, including a baseball cap.

Basketball is a favorite interest of the duo. Apart from frequently attending games, including both this year’s and the 2017 All-Star Game with daughter Blue, JAY-Z owned a small portion of the Brooklyn Nets from 2004 to 2013 while Beyoncé was reportedly “mulling an investment” in the Houston Rockets last year.

Fans were bummed that Beyoncé and JAY-Z didn’t post any adorable photos from their relationship to mark their 10th anniversary earlier this month. However, they can catch the couple at their recently announced joint summer tour, dubbed OTR II, which they previewed during Beyoncé’s headlining Coachella sets.

A source previously told PEOPLE about the music power couple’s plan to return to the stage together. “They are incredibly excited. It took a lot of work to make this happen. It’s the best choice for their family.”

Beyoncé Shows Off Her Moves at Rollerskating Rink While JAY-Z Reportedly Sits on the Sidelines

Beyoncé and JAY-Z were spotted at the World on Wheels skating rink in Venice, California with friends, just before midnight on Friday.

Fans on Instagram posted footage of the singer showing off her “Crazy” moves on the rink while TMZ claims that her husband sat on the sidelines.

Wearing tight ripped jeans, a black shirt and black cap, Beyoncé — who just welcomed twins Rumi and son Sir seven weeks ago — blended into the crowd on her wheels.

Early Sunday morning, Beyoncé shared an edited compilation video from the rink, showing the singer dancing on skates, sharing a shot of her rings and hand tattoos and playing around with Snapchat filters.

The superstar couple was also spotted at a local sushi joint on Wednesday — with a source telling PEOPLE that since raw fish was prohibited during her pregnancy, JAY-Z and Beyoncé made it a point to dine at their “longtime favorite” restaurant, Sushi Park.

“They have been many times in the past,” the source continues. “Both of them love great sushi. They had a date night without the kids.”

Beyoncé shared some moments from the sushi date on Instagram— including a photo of herself enjoying a glass of red wine.

A Detailed Timeline of Beyoncé and JAY-Z’s Relationship

“Crazy in Love,” indeed!

Throughout their nearly 15-year relationship, Beyoncé, 35, and JAY-Z, 47, have seen it all. From elevator incidents and infidelity rumors to smash collaborations and adventures in parenting, the fiercely private pair continue to claim the throne of music’s First Family.

Below, a detailed timeline of Bey and Jay’s life together, from “’03 Bonnie and Clyde” to Lemonade.

1999 – 2000

They first meet. Beyoncé previously told Seventeen that they met when she was 18, which would be between September of 1999 and August of 2000.

2000 – 2001

They begin dating when Bey is 19, after getting to know each other. “We were friends first for a year and a half before we went on any dates,” she later told Oprah Winfrey in an OWN interview. “We were on the phone for a year and a half, and that foundation is so important for a relationship. Just to have someone who you just like is so important, and someone is honest.”

Fall 2001

The pair appears on the cover of Vanity Fair‘s November 2001 music issue. JAY-Z later told the magazine, “we were just beginning to try to date each other” at the time, adding: “Well, you know, you’ve got to try first. You got to dazzle . . . wine and dine,” and that he had his work cut out for him pursuing her. “She’s a charming Southern girl, you know, she’s not impressed. . . . But I would have definitely had to be this cool.”

October 2002

JAY-Z releases “’03 Bonnie & Clyde,” featuring Beyoncé. The next month, they filmed the music video in Mexico.

May 2003

Beyoncé drops her “Crazy in Love” music video featuringJAY-Z, and they go on to win the Best R&B Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration awards at the 2004 Grammy Awards.

Despite rumors and the track’s obvious hints and their explosive onscreen chemistry, the pair still hadn’t gone public with their romance at the time — advice they fielded from Oprah! “I remember the first time you were on the Oprah show, I told you, ‘Don’t go around telling people who you’re dating,’” the talk show legend recalled in her 2013 catch-up with Beyoncé.

August 2004

Bey and Jay make their red carpet debut at the MTV VMAs in Miami, where they both took home Moonmen.

September 2006

Beyoncé drops her second solo LP, B’Day, on her 25th birthday. The chart-topper included two more collabs with JAY-Z: “Déjà Vu” and “Upgrade U.”

November 2006

JAY-Z releases Kingdom Come, which includes yet another Beyoncé duet, “Hollywood.”

April 2008

Jay and Bey get married in a top-secret, super-intimate ceremony on April 4.

“It was a very emotional wedding — lots of crying — and really very spiritual,” a source told PEOPLE at the time of the soirée, held at the rapper’s 13,500-sq.-ft. Manhattan penthouse and decorated with 70,000 dendrobium orchids flown in from Thailand.

While the pair kept their marriage under wraps at first, Beyoncé later opened up about their nuptials — and their relationship leading up to the big day.

“There was no rush — no one expected me to run off and get married,” she told Seventeen. “I really don’t believe that you will love the same thing when you’re 20 as you do at 30. So that was my rule: Before the age of 25, I would never get married. I feel like you have to get to know yourself, know what you want, spend some time by yourself, and be proud of who you are before you can share that with someone else.”

August 2008

JAY-Z finally confirms his marriage to Bey in a September ’08 Vibe cover story — and opened up about why they kept it quiet for so long.

“That’s ridiculous for me to confirm,” he told the mag. “I don’t have … I’m gonna say, I think that was a ridiculous question. I just think it’s really a part of your life that you gotta keep to yourself … You have to, or you’ll go insane in this type of business. You have to have something that’s sacred to you and the people around you … I shared so much of my life, my childhood, and my family, the death of my nephew with the world. I should have something to hold on to. You need something for your sanity to say, ‘Okay, I could chill out, and this is it.’”

November 2008

Beyoncé finally talks about her marriage in her December-January 2008 Seventeen cover story.

“I guess probably that we’re all human,” she told the mag of what she’s learned from her relationship. “I don’t care if you’re picture-perfect on every magazine cover, and you’re the most handsome, successful, coolest guy — you still get sad, and you still get your feelings hurt, and you still get confused and vulnerable and nervous and scared. You have to find a person you can make it through the tough times with.”

January 2009

Jay and Bey attend President Barack Obama’s first inauguration, singing “America the Beautiful” at his swearing-in ceremony then the Etta James classic “At Last” for POTUS and Michelle Obama’s first dance at his inaugural ball.

2010 – 2011

Rumors swirl that Beyoncé is pregnant. In her 2013 HBO documentary Life Is But a Dream, she revealed that she had once been pregnant but miscarried.

“About two years ago, I was pregnant for the first time,” she said in the doc. “And I heard the heartbeat, which was the most beautiful music I ever heard in my life … Being pregnant was very much like falling in love. You are so open. You are so overjoyed. There’s no words that can express having a baby growing inside of you, so of course you want to scream it out and tell everyone. , I flew back to New York to get my check up — and no heartbeat. Literally the week before I went to the doctor, everything was fine, but there was no heartbeat.”

August 2011

Beyoncé reveals she is pregnant at the MTV VMAs in L.A., cradling what appeared to be a bump on the red carpet before telling the audience during her “Love on Top” performance, “I want you to stand up on your feet. I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside me.”

October 2011

Beyoncé andJAY-Z are dogged by an Internet conspiracy that she is not actually pregnant herself and is using a surrogate.

Bey addressed the rumors in Life Is But a Dream, calling the reports a “stupid rumor, the most ridiculous rumor I’ve ever heard about me … To think that I would be that vain…”

January 2012

Jay joins Bey onstage at the Grammys in L.A., where they gave a passionate performance of “Drunk in Love.” #surfbort

May 2014

JAY-Z, Beyoncé and Solange attend the annual Met Gala on May 7 in N.Y.C. Five days later, video footage of Solange seemingly attacking Jay in an elevator at an afterparty leaks online. None of the parties involved have ever spoken out about what caused the altercation, but tabloids reported that Solange was upset with Jay over alleged cheating rumors.

Days after the incident, the trio released a statement: “There has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident. But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it. Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family. The reports of Solange being intoxicated or displaying erratic behavior throughout that evening are simply false. At the end of the day families have problems and we’re no different. We love each other and above all we are family. We’ve put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same.”

In an August 2014 Lucky cover story, Solange addressed the incident, calling it “that thing.” “What’s important is that my family and I are all good,” the singer, 28, told the now-defunct magazine. “What we had to say collectively was in the statement that we put out, and we all feel at peace with that.”

June 2014

Jay and Bey embark on their On the Run Tour, kicking off the 21-date spectacle in Miami on June 25.

Summer 2014

The couple is plagued by rumors that their marriage is in crisis and they are heading toward a divorce.

“Word around the industry has been that things are rocky at home,” a music source who has worked with JAY-Z told PEOPLE at the time. “If they split, no one would be surprised.” But a JAY-Z friend insisted: “They are a great couple. They are soulmates and perfect for each other.”

August 2014

Beyoncé drops her “***Flawless” remix featuring Nicki Minaj, seemingly nodding to the Met Gala incident with the new lyric: “Of course sometimes s— go down when it’s a billion dollars on the elevator.”

On Aug. 24, JAY-Z and Blue Ivy take the stage at the MTV VMAs in L.A. to present Beyoncé with her Video Vanguard Award.

“Thank you. I have nothing to say, but I’m thrilled with so much gratitude,” Bey said in her acceptance speech. “I just thank God for this moment. I love y’all so much,” she tearfully told the crowd. “My beloved, I love you. My fans, I love you. MTV, I love you. Good night!”

November 2014

Solange marries Alan Ferguson in New Orleans on Nov. 16; Beyoncé, JAY-Z and Blue Ivy attend.

The following week, Beyoncé releases two new songs, including “Ring Off.” While there was initial speculation the infidelity-fueled track was inspired by troubles in her own marriage, it was actually about her parents’, which ended when they split in 2009.

April 2015

JAY-Z posts a video of his and Beyoncé’s wedding on Instagram. The clip showed them exchanging vows – he in a dashing black tux, she in a voluminous white gown — before Jay slid a wedding ring on Beyoncé’s finger and they walked down the aisle.

However, Jay has since deleted his Instagram account.

May 2015

Beyoncé, JAY-Z and Solange all attend the Met Gala in New York City, one year after the afterparty elevator incident at the Standard Hotel.

February 2016

Beyoncé performs with Bruno Mars and Chris Martin and Coldplay during the Super Bowl halftime show, while JAY-Z and Blue Ivy watch from a private box with Martin’s ex Gwyneth Paltrow and their kids Apple and Moses.

April 2016

Beyoncé’s Lemonade special airs on HBO and the album goes on sale after a mysterious, week-long promo campaign. The lyrics in songs like “Hold Up,” “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and “Sorry” hint at infidelity and a marriage in crisis, while “Sand Castles” and “All Night” are about redemption, forgiveness and a renewed bond. Critics and fans flooded social media with commentary on the visual album, many interpreting it to be autobiographical while others thought it a was a self-promotional creative endeavor.

Days later, Bey kicks off her Formation World Tour in Miami. Despite reports that their marriage was still on the rocks, the pair were photographed — with Jay’s arm around his wife —  at the concert venue, and she closed the show dedicating her hit “Halo” to her “beautiful husband.”

Eventually, Bey’s mom Tina Knowles Lawson weighs in on the meaning of Lemonade, saying: “It could be about anyone’s marriage. I think that everybody at one time or another has been betrayed and lied to and it’s about the pain and it’s about the healing process and it’s about, ‘How do you get past that and move on.’”

May 2016

Beyoncé attends the Met Gala sans JAY-Z just eight days after the release of Lemonade, spurring more questions about the status of their relationship.

That same month, Fat Joe and Remy Ma release a remix of “All the Way Up” featuring JAY-Z, in which he raps: “You know you made it when the fact your marriage made it is worth millions / Lemonade is … a popular drink and it still is.” Then, that evening, Jay and Bey met up in New York for a date night at Italian hotspot Del Posto.

July 2016

December 2016

On Dec. 3, Beyoncé throws JAY-Z a private surprise bash in L.A., where they celebrated with Kelly Rowland, Tina Knowles Lawson and more.

Feb. 2017

Beyoncé reveals she and JAY-Z are expecting twins.

“We would like to share our love and happiness. We have been blessed two times over,” she captioned a photo of herself cradling her baby bump. “We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes. – The Carters.”

Later that month, the couple attended both the Grammys (where Bey put on a show-stopping, goddess-inspired performance) and a pre-Oscars party, where the singer showed off her growing bump in multiple fitted ensembles.

April 2017

JAY-Z and Beyoncé celebrated nine years of marriage, with the mom-to-be sharing a series of photos and a sweet montage video — set to her song “Die With You” — to mark the occasion.

“I don’t need air in my lungs. If I can’t sing your song,” one image read — showing the couple’s matching ring finger “IV” tattoos (Beyoncé was born on Sept. 4; JAY-Z on Dec. 4; they tied the knot on April 4).

That same month, the longtime lovebirds jetted off to Bora Bora for a South Pacific babymoon — likely their last big vacation before the twins arrive. (Beyoncé had been scheduled to perform at Coachella in April, but postponed her appearance until 2018 on doctor’s orders.)

June 2017

A source confirmed to PEOPLE that Beyoncé and JAY-Z welcomed their twins in mid-June.

Later that month, JAY-Z dropped his 13th solo studio album4:44. In the title track, the rapper references his relationship with Beyoncé, apologizes for womanizing, says his daughter and newborn twins changed his perspective, mentions a series of miscarriages, and confesses he’s undeserving of the relationship.

“I apologize, our love was one for the ages and I contained us,” he raps, later adding, “And if my children knew, I don’t even know what I would do / If they ain’t look at me the same / I would prolly die with all the shame.”

June 2017

Beyoncé makes her super low-key public debut since welcoming the twins for an event alongside JAY-Z celebrating Roc Nation artist Vic Mensa in L.A. That same night, the mom of three shared the first photo of the couple’s new additions, confirming they welcomed son Sir and daughter Rumi in June.

The Internet Lost It When Beyoncé Dropped That Twins Photo

The first photo of Beyoncé and JAY-Z‘s twins dropped in the early hours of Friday morning. And as expected, the Bey Hive swarmed the Internet with glee.

“Sir Carter and Rumi 1 month today,” the songstress, 35, captioned an image on Instagram – holding the tiny tots while wearing a Palomo Spain ensemble in a shot that evoked the same themes as the stunning maternity photo she and her rapper husband used for their double baby announcement in February.

Besides it being their first public photo, Beyoncé’s post was also the first time the names of her twins were officially confirmed. In June, trademark documents for the twins’ names had been filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Of course, Beyoncé’s fans were not ready for the surprise.

Discovering the pics early in the morning on Friday meant some were going to be late for work.

Or not do any work at all.

But they had to spend some time analyzing everything about the shot — even if Bey’s flawlessness meant questioning their own abilities.

Fans were shook.

One even changed her mind about starting a family of her own one day.

And the photo’s already reached legendary status.

Mostly, though, people came to just bow down to their queen.

Beyoncé’s family also got in on the conversation, wishing Bey the best.

“So happy my baby shared a photo of her babies with the world,” mom Tina Knowles wrote on Instagram Friday morning. “Proud grandma. Hello Sir Carter and Rumi Carter. Boy and girl what a blessing.”

“Beautiful!” added Matthew Knowles on Twitter. “#ProudDad #ProudGrandDad #Beyonce.”

In addition to Rumi and Sir Carter, the Carter family also includes big sister Blue Ivy, 5. The family of five are currently settled in to their $ 400,000-a-month Malibu rental.

Minute before dropping the picture, Beyoncé joined JAY-Z for a super low-key appearance at a Los Angeles event celebrating Roc Nation artist Vic Mensa. The paired looked happy and relaxed and not at all like exhausted new parents who’d welcomed two new members to their family a month prior.

Beyoncé Gives Birth To Destiny’s Children

Beyhive, meet your two newest members.

Beyoncé and husband Jay Z have welcomed twins in Los Angeles, according to multiple outlets. The sex of the twins is currently unknown, as well as exactly when the singer gave birth. The couple are, of course, already parents to Blue Ivy, 5, who, if you haven’t heard, is about the most adorable girl on planet earth.

The “Formation” singer announced she was pregnant with twins in February with an instantly iconic photo shoot that essentially broke the internet. Her announcement photo became the most-liked Instagram post ever. Remember? The floral moment with some green mesh and major Virgin Mary vibes?

“We would like to share our love and happiness. We have been blessed two times over. We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes,” the announcement read, signed by “The Carters.”

The typically reclusive star has been out and about since then. She stopped by the Grammys about a week after the announcement only to lose every major award to Adele. Bey did walk away with the satisfaction that she delivered the night’s most flawless performance, featuring a medley of songs from her nominated album, “Lemonade” about what it means to be a mother and a daughter.

Weeks before giving birth, Beyoncé celebrated her baby shower with family and friends. Dubbed the “Carter Push Party,” the gathering made the internet sigh with collective envy as the guests included mom Tina Knowles and pals Kelly Rowland, Serena Williams and La La Anthony.

Of course, there was also an accompanying photo shoot, showing a very pregnant Bey with a henna-tattooed belly. She also shared photos of herself and Jay Z looking very much in love.

The birth of the twins comes a couple of months after Beyoncé and Jay Z’s ninth wedding anniversary, on April 4which the singer commemorated with a heartfelt video tribute to her husband, featuring the newly available song “Die With You.”

We’re grateful that Bey is happy and healthy and that the possibility of a new generation of Destiny’s Child is closer than ever before.

Beyoncé Shows Off Her Baby Bump in a Stunning Purple Gown — and Blue Ivy Is Loving It!

Beyoncé may be rocking a growing baby bump, but she still knows how to pull off a photo shoot.

The 35-year-old singer, who announced in early February that she is expecting twins, treated fans to a series of Instagram photos showing off her growing belly. Beyoncé wore a form-fitting, long-sleeved purple gown for the occasion, showing off her look in a quirky video set to The Isley Brothers’ song “Pop That Thang.”

In another set of photos, Beyoncé flaunted her accessories, including shots of her sparkling earrings, wedge heels and blue ring.

Her daughter Blue Ivy, 5, also got in on the action. In one snap, the first child of Beyoncé and Jay Z gives her mom a hug, laying her head on her mother’s bump.

Jay Z also made an appearance, standing next to his wife of nine years in a black and white photo.

Beyoncé hasn’t been shy about flaunting her pregnancy style. She and her husband took Blue Ivy to the Beauty and the Beast world premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California and the mother-daughter duo were a sight that any Disney Princess would approve of, dressed in coordinating green duds for the event.

FROM COINAGE: 7 Most Expensive Music Videos

The singer also shared photos from the night she accompanied mom Tina Lawson to a performance by the Alvin Ailey dance company. In addition to posing in her pink trench coat and gold heels, she shared a video of a silly Snapchat session with her daughter.

Beyoncé has yet to reveal the sex of her twins, but fans have been buzzing about the possibility that she’s expecting two boys.

Beyhive members noted the expecting mom wore the same earrings she wore in her 2008 music video for “If I Were A Boy” in her glamorous baby bump photos shared on her website, leading many to speculate Bey was once again trying to tell us something.

Others speculate she’s expecting a boy and a girl, looking at her pregnancy announcement from Feb. 1 for clues. In the photo, internet sleuths point to a small pink bow on her scalloped embroidered tulle Agent Provocateur bra — which could indicate that one of Bey’s babies is a girl — and her powder blue Dauphine panty bottoms by Liviara — which could suggest that the other baby is a boy.

Beyoncé Sculpted In Cheese Is Strangely Alluring

Remember when Beyoncé was vegan? This is pretty much the opposite of that.

A London-based creative agency teamed up with a group of artists and designers to create Queen Bey’s likeness in cheese. We can’t decide if we want to eat this replica, aptly titled “Brie-Oncé,” or preserve it until the end of time.

The sliceable sculpture is modeled after Beyoncé’s iconic pregnancy announcement in February. It’s made from about 45 pounds of cheddar cheese and took 28 hours to create. (And they say Rome wasn’t built in a day!)

Brie-Oncé, which was created for The Robin Collective by sculptors David Bradley and Jacqui Kelly, creative director Brandy Klingelpuss and designers Guy Roberts and Robin Fegen, will be on display at a wine and cheese festival in London this weekend.

“Hopefully she won’t lose her formation,” The Robin Collective’s Rosa Holmes told HuffPost. We’re melting.

The delicious-looking statue is a genius combination of two universally loved entities, and we have to admit everyone involved did a ***flawless job. Beyoncé was always the G.O.A.T., but now she’s the G.O.A.T. cheese, too.

Beyoncé Might’ve Subtly Paid Homage To Adele At ‘Beauty And The Beast’ Premiere

Everyone in the music world remembers Adele’s awesome shout-out to Beyoncé at the Grammys while accepting the Album of the Year award in February.

“I can’t possibly accept this award, and I’m very humbled and I’m very grateful and gracious, but my artist of my life is Beyoncé and this album, to me, the ‘Lemonade’ album, was so monumental, Beyoncé,” she said, after “25” beat out Bey’s 2016 album for the night’s biggest award. “It was so monumental and so well-thought-out and so beautiful and soul-baring, and we all got to see another side to you that you don’t always let us see and we appreciate that.”

That night, Adele also wore a tribute to Queen Bey on her chest: a lemon pin.

Last week, Beyoncé and Blue Ivy attended the premiere of “Beauty and the Beast” together.

The singer wore a green empire-waist gown, while it appears that Blue wore a modified version of a tiered dress from Gucci’s Fall 2016 collection, according to E! News

BuzzFeed noticed that in the middle of Blue’s dress was a heart with “25” stitched in the center, which just might have been a nod to Ms. Adele Laurie Blue Adkins’ album.

While we don’t know for sure if the “25” had significance (a rep for Gucci was not immediately available for comment), we sure hope so.

Beyonce shines, Adele flubs in Grammy’s top moments

Beyonce accepts the award for best urban contemporary album for "Lemonade" at the 59th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017, in Los Angeles. (Photo by Matt Sayles/Invision/AP)In Beyonce's first performance since announcing her pregnancy with twins, she shined head to toe at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night in golden hues. Meanwhile Adele got a rare do-over on national television when she flubbed her performance, and Beyonce's daughter, Blue Ivy, stole the show with her adorable mini-Prince outfit. Here are the top Grammy moments:

We’ve Got A Right To Be Mad About Beyoncé Losing ‘Album Of The Year’

No. Those who expressed their disappointment in Beyoncé losing the Album of the Year Award at Sunday Night’s Grammy Awards were not overreacting.

Yes, there are ostensibly “more important” things going on in the world than a multi-millionaire superstar losing one award on a night where she won two others, but it’s possible ― and even necessary ― to care about more than one thing at a time.

And this is worth talking about.

On a night that opened with a very political message from Jennifer Lopez who quoted Toni Morrison and said that “at this particular point in history, our voices are needed more than ever,” Beyoncé losing Album of the Year, the most important award of the night, felt like a much bigger loss than the usual award show snub.

Adele’s “25” is a good album. It was an immensely successful album. After five years outside of the limelight, Adele came back with a highly anticipated record that sold over 8 million copies in the United States alone in 2016. “Lemonade” sold only 1.5 million.

If the criteria for Grammy wins was based solely on records sold, then maybe Adele’s win for Album of the Year would make more sense, maybe it would be easier to accept. But even Adele herself said on stage that she couldn’t “possibly accept this award,”(though she did) and that “The ‘Lemonade’ album is just so monumental.”

She’s right. Again, “25” was a good album! But “Lemonade,” whether you enjoyed it or not, was a cultural event, a moment in which Beyoncé put all her personal, spiritual, and artistic cards on the table. It was a cohesive body of work that, as Beyoncé described it in her only acceptance speech of the night (for Contemporary Album) gave “voice to the pain,” and strength, of black women.

“Lemonade” said something and meant something to so many people, especially young women of color who saw themselves reflected in the stories and tableaux crafted by Beyoncé and her team (both in video and in song). Arguably the most popular black singer in the world had not only churned out a stellar piece of work, she’s also chosen for that work to be black as hellspecifically black, unavoidably black.

Because of “Lemonade,” phrases like “Becky with the good hair” and “Jackson Five nostrils” and “hot sauce in my bag” entered the mainstream lexicon. While others tried to claim them, dismantle them, and rework them for their own use, they still remained to intrinsically ours, so intrinsically black. That was huge. That was a moment

Lauryn Hill was the last black woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys. That was in 1999. Since then, Beyoncé has become the most-nominated woman ever at the show, with a whopping 62 nominations. Of the three times she’s been nominated for Album of The Year, she’s lost out to Taylor Swift, Beck, and now Adele. As Adele said to the press Sunday night, “What the fuck does [Beyoncé] have to do to win Album of the Year?”

The disappointment and even the outrage flooding Twitter and Facebook in the aftermath of Bey’s snub should really come as no surprise. The Grammys have a long legacy of using important and popular black artists like Beyoncé, Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar to boost ratings while failing to give them the big noms and awards of the night. But, damn.

If even Beyoncé can’t get the top award of the night for a record like Lemonade,” after turning in an incredible performance (while pregnant with twins, no less), what exactly does that say about the black experience in America? Seriously? Yes, Beyoncé is the winner of many awards. She’s rich and successful and has definitely benefited in the past from her light skin and bleached locks. It’s interesting how, now that she’s incorporated her blackness and her politics more explicitly in her music, no longer here to just grind and sing catchy love songs to the masses, the systemic realities of being a proudly black woman in a white-dominated industry have come to light.

What’s important to remember is that Beyoncé is an artist. And that’s what’s so frustrating about America’s love of black culture. So often, black entertainment is sought after and greedily consumed, but it’s delegitimized as art because of its inherent blackness. Look at the histories of black musical art forms like jazz and hip-hop, cultural phenomenons that were looked on as nothing but fads until they were validated by white audiences and artists who consumed and regurgitated them for the mainstream.

That’s why “Lemonade” has meant so much to so many black people who needed (and continue to need) an album like this to exist. It’s nice that Adele said something in that moment up on stage. Though some chafed at her mention of what “Lemonade” meant not only to her but to her “black friends,” the album’s significance as a specifically powerful black cultural moment should have been acknowledged, and celebrated. It’s sad that it wasn’t the Recording Artists Academy that thought that was worth celebrating.

A Guide To Sturgill Simpson, The Grammy Nominee Up Against Beyoncé And Adele

Sturgill Simpson may not be a household name, but the 38-year-old singer will compete Sunday in the coveted Album of the Year category at the Grammy Awards ― against many of the world’s biggest stars.

Simpson’s third solo studio effort, “A Sailor’s Guide to Earth,” is up against mainstream heavy-hitters: Beyoncé’s “Lemonade,” Adele’s “25,” Justin Bieber’s “Purpose” and Drake’s “Views.”

Even Simpson himself was surprised when the nominations came out in December, telling the Los Angeles Times, “In terms of what happened today, this never even crossed my mind. When we came off the road at Thanksgiving, I really thought, ‘Well, that’s it for this one. We’ve done everything,’ and I started thinking about what to do for the next record. This has all been slightly surreal to say the least.”

Surreal, indeed.

Read on for more about the man behind “A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.”

This isn’t Simpson’s first rodeo.

His sophomore album, 2014’s “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music,” received a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album. It also became a critics’ darling, ranking on Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of 2014 list.

Before going solo, Simpson played in a bluegrass band called Sunday Valley. The group released an EP in 2004 and made an appearance at the Pickathon Festival in Portland, Oregon. But they didn’t get too far, Simpson says. “We couldn’t travel because the bass player had a great gig with the fire department,” he told Rolling Stone.

Simpson comes from a family of coal miners.

Born in Jackson, Kentucky, Simpson grew up listening to music. His grandmother had 45s by Otis Redding and Sam and Dave, and his older cousin introduced him to the likes of Cream and Jimi Hendrix.

“I was the first male in my mother’s family not to work the mines,” he told Rolling Stone. “Mom was a secretary, Dad was a state cop. We lived in a prefab house just off the highway. When I was in second grade, we moved to Versailles, just outside Lexington.”

He has a wide range of musical influences.

David Bowie, Nirvana, Sly and the Family Stone, Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, Pink Floyd, George Harrison, Curtis Mayfield and T Rex all inspired Simpson’s latest album. You can add Walt Disney to that list, too. “Those old-school Disney movies with the symphonies and strings are great!” he told American Songwriter. It’s no wonder. Simpson says he’s been watching old Disney movies with his son, who was born in June 2014.

He’s a former U.S. Navy sailor.

The Kentucky-born singer made an on-the-spot decision to enlist in the Navy.

“I walked in, looked around, and the Navy recruiter was a really hot brunette, so I signed up with her,” Simpson told Garden and Gun.

Simpson spent time doing service in Japan and Southeast Asia. But the three-year stint eventually came to an end.

“I wasn’t very good at taking orders,” he admitted.

Simpson’s wife encouraged him to get serious about music.

Music faded into the background, when in 2006, Simpson decided to take a job working at a Salt Lake City railroad freight-shipping yard for the Union Pacific Railroad. After four years, his girlfriend (now wife) urged Simpson to pick up the guitar again.

“My wife was a big catalyst for the move to Nashville. I had started really seriously writing for the first time in years and playing at home a bit,” he told Fader. “She said ‘You don’t exactly suck at this. You should know that you tried before you wake up at 40 and I’m stuck with your ass all miserable.’”

It’s a good thing Simpson gave music another go. No longer miserable, Simpson has carved out a musical career for himself. He’s also up for Best Country Album on Sunday ― and will perform on the Grammys stage, possibly inching closer to becoming a household name.

‘Star Wars’ Is Pretty Much Happening In Real Life Because Beyoncé Is Pregnant With Twins

Rita Ora Shuts Down ‘Becky’ Rumors With Beyoncé Selfie At The Met Gala

Well, that’s one way to quash rumors.

Rita Ora seemingly confirmed that she is not “Becky with the good hair” by snapping a selfie with Beyoncé at the 2016 Met Gala on Monday night. Better yet, Queen Bey is smiling in the photo (captioned “Family”), further proving that things are OK between the two.

This is probably the most important career move Ora has ever made, as it means the Beyhive will finally get off her back.

The “Black Widow” singer came under attack last week after wearing a lemon bralette the day Beyoncé released “Lemonade” and a necklace that looked like a “J.” (It’s actually an “R.”) Ora further increased speculation when she stepped out in the same Gucci outfit Bey wears in her “Formation” video.

After the Beyhive struck, Ora took to Twitter to clarify that she wasn’t “Becky.”

If you didn’t believe her tweets then, you probably believe them now.

Everyone Is Mad at Beyoncé, But for the Wrong Reasons

Mondays tend to be disorienting enough. But the events that transpired in the pop culture sphere this week set a particularly confusing tone to the day, forcing innocent consumers to question their loyalties and even, shockingly, suspect that the media may in fact not have the purest of intentions.

The action actually began on Sunday, when an unlikely source fiercely declared herself as a feminist, taking to social media to unleash an impassioned essay regarding the media’s dehumanizing depiction of women as mere arm candy accessorizing the appendages of successful men. “I… do not. belong. to anyone. but myself. and neither do you,” she wrote, chastising media outlets for perpetuating stale double standards and explicit misogyny. She name-dropped the likes of Gloria Steinem, called out the injustice of female slut-shaming and beseeched young women to recognize their truth worth and inherent value.

Ariana Grande: badass feminist.

Color me old (it’s cool, I am, what with being over 30and all that), but I am not intimately familiar with the nuances of Grande’s public persona. Perhaps she’s long been hailed a feminist icon, and I’ve simply been in the dark, but her essay felt groundbreaking, if not a little shocking (in the best way possible) when it came across my feed yesterday morning. In the context of famous young women continuously denying their right (obligation?) to identify as feminists, Grande stood up loud and proud and sent an incredibly important message to her young, impressionable fans, and to women all around the world: the media is fucked up, and you deserve better.

With the unexpected arrival of this declaration, things started out well on Monday. But quickly took a turn. It was early yet — just after 8 a.m. — and the day was filled with so much promise. But then Beyoncé appeared on my television screen and spent the next several minutes extolling the benefits of a vegan diet. Not the health benefits or the environmental payoff, however. No, Beyoncé really just wanted viewers to know that veganism is how she triumphed over her body, achieving that fit, trim figure admired the world over, and that we can follow in her dainty footsteps — all for the price of one best-selling diet book.

That’s right, just as Ariana Grande — pop princess, wearer of cat ears — revealed herself to the world as a strong, self-possessed female standing up for the empowerment of other women and girls, Beyoncé — fierce, outspoken feminist, champion of equality — told us her secret to flatter abs.

It was a confusing day, indeed.

I experience an overwhelming, almost visceral sense of uneasiness when I morally disagree on any issue with Beyoncé. I’m a superfan. I worship at her altar. I drink the Bey Kool-Aid. And she’s given me good reason to do so: Besides being a mind-blowing performer and entertainer, she’s an activist, arguably doing more to further the conversation on equality than any celebrity with her expansive influence. She drops speeches on feminism from Nigerian writer Chimamamda Ngozi Adichie smack dab in the middle of radio-friendly tracks. She performs proudly on MTV in front of a towering backdrop boldly emblazoned with the word “FEMINIST.” She’s dominated a notoriously male-run industry, successfully standing atop her own empire and supporting women every step of the way.

So when she has a slip-up, I wince a little.

And I wasn’t alone yesterday. I was heartened to log into Facebook and see a trending news story regarding the outrage Beyoncé fans were expressing over her morning announcement. I felt validated to know that others stood up and took notice, calling out the hypocrisy and degradation of this impossibly strong female role model taking to the airwaves to shill out a diet book.

But I quickly learned the legions of angry Beyhive members weren’t up in arms over the decidedly disempowering move. They were pissed because they expected a bigger announcement.

In fairness, the irritation is understandable.”Good Morning America” teased the three-minutes-and-change segment as if the singer were about to unveil a new album, tour, baby, documentary series and cure for cancer, all in one breath. The endorsement of a diet book she’d already publicly supported for months felt underwhelming to some, and insulting to many.

But I have yet to see any ire over the endorsement itself. The fact that a woman who has stood for so much more substance has stooped to plugging diet advice. A woman who has taken on society’s soul-crushing, oppressive beauty ideals in her song “Pretty Hurts,” is advocating veganism as a vehicle for sustained weight loss. A woman with over 35 million Instagram followers and sold-out stadiums worth of male and female fans is using her platform to sheepishly confess, “I am not naturally the thinnest,” on national television and that she’s finally found a food plan that “keeps the weight off.”

This isn’t the Beyoncé I know, love and admire, and the stumble is hard to stomach. It would be a flat-out lie to deny the fact that much of her fame has undoubtedly been influenced by her iconic body. But the agency Beyoncé took in displaying, flaunting, concealing and using her body onstage and onscreen differentiated her from other female performers who have seemingly been positioned as scantily-clad puppets selling iTunes singles. Beyoncé owned her body in a way that felt powerful. And surrendering that power in order to promote a diet book doesn’t feel relatable or real; it feels weak.

I’m grateful for the empowering messages Beyoncé and women like her have fearlessly put forward in the name of feminism. And I’m happily surprised to find that others in the public eye like Grande are opting to own their feminist convictions and unapologetically stand for something more than their looks, weight, or carefully-contoured faces. I just hope Beyoncé doesn’t continue to disappoint — the world is confusing enough.

Nicki Minaj And Beyoncé Have An Awesome Summer Party In ‘Feeling Myself’ Video

Tidal subscribers were in luck on Monday when Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé dropped the video for “Feeling Myself” exclusively on the streaming service. The song, which appears on Minaj’s “The Pinkprint,” first leaked online last December. And now the video for “Feeling Myself” has leaked.

In the video, Minaj and Queen Bey play with squirt guns in inflatable pools in pink fur coats, eat cheeseburgers in a bounce house, have a champagne pool party and share Now and Laters. It’s pretty much the summer party of your dreams. (And proof that bucket hats only look good on Beyoncé.)

Beyoncé previously released her video for her new song “Die With You” on the artist-owned streaming service last month. Soon after, Rihanna released her video for “American Oxygen” and Jay Z released his music video for “Glory” via Tidal. There are also rumors that a possible Jay Z and Beyoncé joint album will exclusively premiere on Tidal, proving that the streaming service is serious about rewarding its users, especially after Jay Z’s special Tidal shows over the weekend.

Could Beyonce Be the New Face of Givenchy?

After Beyoncé was seen posing on a Brooklyn rooftop with Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci, the fashion rumor mill has started buzzing once again. Might she be the latest star to lend her face to the brand’s ad campaigns?

There’s no question that Beyoncé and the fashion house are fans of each other: The pop icon has worn Givenchy to the Met Gala for the past four years (including her see-through pick from last Monday), and the label has designed costumes for the On the Run and Mrs. Carter tours.

Beyond the fact that there’s already a lot of brand love in place, Givenchy’s made it a thing to pick unexpected campaign stars. Eschewing big-name supers or up-and-coming models, the house has recently worked with Donatella Versace and Julia Roberts. And while it wouldn’t be crazy at all to see the official announcement come through, let’s all remember this is currently a lot of speculation. The duo could have been working on an editorial shoot or images for an upcoming album. Or, honestly, just having the most fun friend day ever because that’s what you can do when you’re living the fabulous life of Beyoncé.

Oscar Plan to Give All Awards to Beyoncé to Prevent Kanye ProtWests

The Oscar awards committee today announced controversial new plans to give all future awards to singer Beyoncé Knowles in an attempt to stop rapper Kanye West from storming the stage.

The sight of Kanye, producer of such international hits as “Jesus Walks” and “Gold Digger”, helping himself to the podium steps has become a common sight in recent years and has been dubbed ProtWests or ProtWesting by satirists with too much time on their hands.

A spokesperson for the committee told us, “I think it’s become obvious that Kanye knows best; I mean take the Grammys. Awarding the prize to a genial newcomer like Beck who barely has thirty years in the music industry instead of Beyoncé was just unforgivable and, frankly the totally impartial committee should have known better. As should E! News for branding the microphones that they paid for with their own money.”

“Originally we thought that awarding statues to recipients based on a consensus from a large and diverse group of industry professionals was pretty fair, but then Kanye brought to our attention that this just didn’t sit well with him.”

Despite Ms. Knowles, 34, not actually doing anything to qualify for the movie industry’s highest award this year, a source close to Mr. West made it clear that “they shouldn’t let that stop them, or buddy, Kanye will.”

Other organizations said to be considering similar moves are the SAG Awards, The Producers Guild and the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. A spokesperson for the latter told us, “We considered other moves to prevent Kanye protWesting us, such as large fences around the stage with really big spikes, armed guards or just not inviting him to anything with a statue, but we think that in the long run just giving all the awards to Beyoncé will work out better.”

Beyonce Launches Vegan Home Delivery Meal Service In Hopes You’ll Feel #Flawless

If a diva is a female version of a hustler, then, logically speaking, a vegan diva is the female version of a vegan hustler.

The clean-eating Beyonce herself recently partnered with her personal trainer, exercise physiologist Marco Borges, to launch the 22 Days Nutrition plant-based home delivery meal service. The service offers three meal plans, where you can sign up to receive anywhere from one to three meals a day for 22 days delivered to your door each week. A full three-meals-a-day package will cost you a total of $ 629.79, including shipping of $ 19.95. According to the website, all of the meals are gluten-free, soy-free and organic. Each meal is “a perfect balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat with limited salt and sugar.”

The meal plan busts the myth that vegans struggle to get enough protein in their diets. “In reality, eating a variety of beans, nuts, seeds and grains will give your body the protein it needs to keep energy levels up and build and keep muscle tone,” the website says.

Twenty-two days of veganism may seem random, but the time span is a conscious choice of Borges and Beyonce. “The program’s philosophy is based on the concept that it takes 21 days to make or break a habit and on the 22nd day you are well on your way to forming new habits,” says a statement. The meal plan is targeted to those who want to lose weight, cook less or simply “experience a whole new way of eating.”

“I am so grateful that I took the challenge and credit Marco with leading by example,” Beyonce says in the statement. “He is the most energetic person I know and it’s all because of his decision to live a healthy lifestyle. He came up with a great program to get people motivated to make better nutritional choices. All you have to do is try. If I can do it, anyone can.”

Beyonce’s first public stint with veganism was in December 2013, when she and her husband Jay Z adopted the plant-based diet for 22 days. Jay Z referred to the challenge as “a spiritual and physical cleanse.”

BET Awards Honor Pharrell, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj And August Alsina

LOS ANGELES, June 29 (Reuters) – R&B star Pharrell, rapper Nicki Minaj and newcomer August Alsina led the winners at the Black Entertainment Television (BET) awards on Sunday, which also honored veteran soul singer Lionel Richie.

Pharrell kicked off the show with “Come Get It Bae” and won two awards, including best male R&B/pop artist. Beyonce was named best female R&B/pop singer, and closed the show with a sultry performance of “Partition” with husband Jay Z. The couple also won best collaboration for “Drunk In Love.”

Richie, 65, received the lifetime achievement award for his prolific career as part of Motown group The Commodores and as a solo artist.

“Soul is a feeling, not a color. Talent is a god given gift and not a category, and out of the box is the magical place where true talent goes to thrive and breathe,” Richie said as he accepted the award.

John Legend, Ledisi and Yolanda performed Richie’s classic love songs “Hello”, “Still” and The Commodores’ “Brick House” and “Jesus is Love”. Richie sang “Easy” and “All Night Long”.

The BET awards, held in Los Angeles, celebrates black musicians, actors and athletes. It is hosted by cable TV network Black Entertainment Television, part of Viacom Inc., and the show was preceded by violence at unofficial parties ahead of the show in which one person was killed.

New Orleans singer Alsina was named best new artist and Lil Wayne’s rap collective Young Money scored best group.

Drake won best male hip hop artist, but was not available to collect his award. Minaj was named best female hip hop artist and threw a little dig at other rappers by saying: “When you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.”

Comedian Chris Rock hosted the show, throwing jokes and jibes and handing out chicken and waffles to the audience. The almost four-hour ceremony toplined high-profile performances from some of the music world’s biggest names.

Usher referenced his 20-year career with a medley of his hits, Minaj performed “Pills N’ Potions” on a stage with giant psychedelic mushrooms and R&B star Chris Brown joined Lil Wayne to perform “Loyal”.

Australian newcomer Iggy Azalea joined rapper T.I. to perform “No Mediocre” and her hit single “Fancy”. The show also served up 1990s nostalgia with R&B groups Troop, Color Me Badd and Silk singing a medley of classic hits.

Oscar-winning historical drama “12 Years A Slave” swept the film categories with Oscar-winning newcomer Lupita Nyong’o named best actress and Chiwetel Ejiofor named best actor. Neither were on hand to accept their awards.

Civil rights activist Myrlie Evers-Williams accepted the humanitarian award commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act signed into law in 1964.

Madonna And Beyonce Expected To Perform At Grammys

To all the performers on next week’s Grammy Awards lineup: Sit down, the queens are in the house.

Madonna and Beyonce are set to perform at the Grammys on Jan. 26, according to a Los Angeles Times report that cites “two sources with knowledge of the plans.” The Huffington Post reached out to representatives from both singers’ camps and will update this post upon receiving confirmation of the news.

Madonna is expected to contribute guest vocals to a performance from one of the night’s nominees. Previously scheduled performers who Madonna could cozy up with onstage include Lorde, Taylor Swift, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and Kendrick Lamar with Imagine Dragons.

Beyonce will offer her first televised performance since releasing her surprise self-titled album on Dec. 13. The momentum for the unexpected release hasn’t dwindled yet, as the album still sits at No. 2 on the Billboard albums chart and could receive an additional boost from the singer’s Grammy appearance.

“Let’s put it this way … we have a really great history that goes back to the early days of Destiny’s Child,” Grammy show producer Ken Ehrlich told the Los Angeles Times, despite being unable to confirm or deny the two singers’ involvement. “I love working with [Beyonce]. She’s incredible. She is so into what it is that she does and making sure that everybody who sees her walks away saying ‘wow.’”

Beyonce is up for one Grammy this year, as a featured artist on Jay Z’s “Magna Carta…Holy Grail” track “Part II (On The Run).” She and Madonna have a long history with the awards. Thanks to both her solo work and her Destiny’s Child material, Beyonce is one of the most-honored female artists in Grammy history, behind Alison Krauss and Aretha Franklin. Madonna has seven Grammy trophies, three of which came for her acclaimed 1998 album “Ray of Light.” Her 2006 performance with Gorillaz and De La Soul is commonly credited as one of the best Grammy acts in recent years.

If the news comes to fruition, Madonna and Beyonce will join an all-star roster of performers that also includes a Beatles reunion featuring Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Daft Punk taking the stage alongside Nile Rodgers, Pharrell Williams and Stevie Wonder, and Metallica being joined by noted concert pianist Lang Lang.

Beyonce Performs ‘XO’ For The First Time At Chicago Show

Beyonce is wasting no time in incorporating her new album into her tour’s setlist. After electrifying the Internet by dropping the 14-song collection at the stroke of midnight on Friday with no prior announcement, Queen Bey is now transferring the royal energy she used to captivate the world to her live performances. She debuted “XO,” which will also reportedly serve as the next single released from the self-titled album (“Blow” and “Drunk in Love” are both currently out).

“I’m gonna sing this song, which is a brand new song,” Beyonce announced to the crowd on Friday at Chicago’s United Center, where she used a call-and-response format to engage the crowd with the unfamiliar track. “It hasn’t even been out for 24 hours. I want to sing this to y’all because it was written for y’all.”

Beyonce will have ample time to integrate the album into her setlist. The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour has five remaining shows in 2013 before resuming in February and March, when Beyonce will perform 16 gigs in Europe.

TIME Regrets Naming Pope Francis ‘Person Of The Year’ After Beyoncé Drops Surprise Album

Staff at TIME have been left fuming after Beyoncé released a surprise album just days after the magazine chose the Pope as their Person Of The Year.

“I told them we should wait at least a few weeks for any late entries,” one unnamed staffer told HuffPost UK Comedy. “But they wouldn’t listen. Now look what’s happened.”

“Beyoncé unexpectedly dropping a new album is a complete game-changer,” said another. “There’s nothing Pope Francis could have done to beat this… except for releasing an album. And even then, he’d have to better 14 new songs and 17 videos.”

Beyoncé is now expected to be a last-minute entry on at least 500 end-of-year lists, including 2013’s Best Albums and 2013’s Most Overrated Albums.

Beyonce Surprises Fans With New Album Featuring Jay Z, Blue Ivy, Drake

Beyonce knows her way around a holiday surprise. The singer end-capped 2013 with an “exclusive visual album” that hit iTunes as Thursday ticked into Friday morning. Her fifth LP is entitled “Beyoncé” and features tracks with Jay Z, Drake, Frank Ocean and the singer’s daughter, Blue Ivy.

Every song on the album also comes with its own music video, a mammoth investment for a singer at Bey’s level. The project comes amid whispers that Beyonce — who let the Presidential Inauguration and Super Bowl pass without a new single — wouldn’t let 2013 go without a new album. Whispers turned into a reality that played out on Twitter, where fans excitedly shared the news, mostly in all-caps messages that included the letters “OMG.”

Previously teased tracks “Standing in the Sun” and “Grown Woman” (which apparently has a video on the way, too) — did not make the album. “I see music,” Beyoncé said in a press release provided shortly after the album hit iTunes. “It’s more than just what I hear. When I’m connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they’re all connected to the music.”

“I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it,” she continued. “I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.”

This is a joyous and developing story. Please check back for more information.
