Former College Football Player Arrested After His Teammate Dies of an Opioid Overdose

Seven months after a promising defensive lineman failed to turn up to practice and was found dead by his concerned teammates, a former player from his college team has been arrested.

On Friday, one-time Rice University football player Stuart “Mooch” Mouchantaf was charged with supplying 21-year-old Blain Padgett pills containing an opioid 10,000 times more powerful than morphine.

The 25-year-old ex-player was allegedly preparing to flee the country before officers took him into custody on Thursday, ABC 13 reports.

The arrest follows the March overdose death of teammate Padgett. The college athlete allegedly believed he was buying Hydrocodone, a prescription narcotic painkiller, from Mouchantaf,  Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said in a statement Friday.

Instead, the footballer took pills that contained Carfentanil — an opioid whose legal amount is reportedly “invisible to the human eye” and was originally intended to be an elephant tranquilizer, the D.A. alleges.

In June, three months after his passing,  the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the toxic effects of Carfentanil — which reportedly causes the brain to stop breathing — caused Padgett to die in his sleep, ABC 13 reports.

Padgett’s parents, Mical and Windi, believed their son knew better than to take drugs from someone else.

“He knew that he should not have been taking it, but he did so,” Mical told the outlet, noting that the poor decision “cost him his life.”

“I know if he was here, he would say, ‘Hey, I take responsibility for this,’” Mical continued.

Windi added: “Blain knew about choices like drinking and driving and knew about choices, but I think that this is something that is fairly new, at least it’s new to us, that you don’t take anything from anyone unless a doctor has prescribed it for you, period.”

The young men played together in 2015 when Mouchantaf was a redshirt senior and Padgett was a freshman, reports USA Today. During his three seasons at Rice University, Mouchantaf totaled 51 tackles. Meanwhile, Padgett was considered “a key player” with a “commanding presence” for the team’s defensive front-line.

Following Mouchantaf arrest, Rice University released a statement to the news channel, thanking authorities for their work on the case.

“We’re deeply saddened to hear about the latest developments in the investigation in the death of Blain Padgett, whose family continues to be foremost in our thoughts,” they wrote. “We want to thank the Houston Police Department investigators assigned to this case for their hard work in the wake of this tragedy. In light of the fact that charges have just been filed, any further comment would be inappropriate at this time.”

After Mouchantaf was taken into custody and questioned on Thursday, a judge set his bond at $ 250,000 once police discovered that he had purchased a one-way ticket to Lebanon.

According to ABC 13, Mouchantaf — who has family in the country and is now considered a flight risk — must wear an ankle monitor and give up his U.S. passport.

The former player has been charged with delivery of a controlled substance causing death and the second-degree felony could result in a prison sentence of anywhere from five to 99 years if Mouchantaf is found guilty, the D.A. said.

At this time, it is not clear if he has retained legal counsel. He is due to appear in court on Monday.

How This College Student Dealt with Her Breast Cancer Diagnosis 2 Months Before Graduation

While planning a post-graduation trip with college friends, Loyola University Chicago senior Anna Wassman was totally focused on saving for her trip — until she noticed a lump in her right breast that she had definitely not felt before.

A former professional ballerina who’s “very in tune with her body,” Wassman immediately called her doctor, who told her to wait a few days to see if it would go away. She waited, but says she “knew this wasn’t good.”

When the lump was still around two days later, Wassman got an ultrasound, which then necessitated a biopsy. Despite the reassurances from family, friends and medical professionals that she was too young for the lump to be anything serious, she anxiously called her doctor’s office every day.

Almost a week after her biopsy, on March 1, she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer, Stage IIa HER2-positive. “This can happen to anyone at any age,” Wassman tells PEOPLE.

So what goes through the mind of a 25-year-old who’s at the top of her class, working full-time, already has a job offer — and now has to fight a life-threatening illness?

“I definitely started crying … and I immediately went into planning mode,” the marketing major recalls. “I knew it was something I had to address, and I couldn’t avoid it anymore. Now that I knew what was going on, it was like, ‘How can we fix this?’ ”

The diagnosis came at the beginning of her spring break, so Wassman packed the following class-free week with doctors appointments, MRIs, CT scans and mammograms. She also asked questions about what she could change in her diet, her physical activity level and any other lifestyle factors that could improve her prognosis.

Because she wasn’t going to give up on her goal: “I just wanted to walk across the stage and graduate ,” Wassman shares.

The determined college student met with her professors — one of whom was a breast cancer survivor herself — to explain her situation and prove her dedication to completing her coursework on schedule.

“I wanted to be completely transparent with my professors to let them know that I wasn’t just blowing off class to do something fun or take a job interview,” Wassman says.

She ended up graduating summa cum laude with the top GPA in her program.

“I don’t know how it’s worked, but everyone’s been there in how I needed them. I’m so grateful,” she muses. Her parents flew from California to be with her for weeks at a time. She never attended chemo alone thanks to her her live-in boyfriend and friends. And she built an entirely new support network of at least a dozen breast cancer survivors around her own age.

After having a bilateral mastectomy — “I didn’t have to, but I wanted no chance of reoccurrence,” Wassman states — she had four and a half months of chemo, which finished the second week in September, and will continue her targeted therapy of prescription drugs for a few more weeks. She also has one more surgery around the corner to get breast implants.

The future for Wassman includes working with Imerman’s Angels, a nonprofit that provides one-on-one support for cancer patients. She also earned a two-year internship with tech company BOSCH, six months of which will be spent living abroad in Germany, starting in early November.

In the meantime, Wassman continues to appreciate the strength of her body every single day.

“There have been days where I’ve been like, ‘I don’t want to go to treatment, I don’t want to do this anymore,’ but you have to,” she says. “But I’m glad that I pushed through and didn’t give up and kept fighting.”

Celebrity Kids Are Getting in on Over-The-Top Dorm Room Trend: See Their Lavish College Digs

A simple bedspread and a poster stuck on the wall doesn’t cut it for college dorm decor anymore.

Today, incoming undergrads are upping their decorating agenda (and budget!) to give their dorms a more luxurious vibe. Many kids go all out, spending money on throw pillows, extra seating, beautiful storage and fun wall art to make their blank-slate digs feel like a Pinterest-perfect home.

In 2017, two Ole Miss students’ impeccably decorated dorm room went viral on social media. Their monogrammed pillows and tufted headboards looked incredibly high-end, but the girls did the whole thing on a budget, shopping at stores like TJ Maxx and Marshall’s to update their once-dreary space.

The same year, two freshmen at Texas State University showed off their lofted twin beds with canopies and faux brick wallpaper, which gave their room a city apartment vibe.

Now, celebrities’ kids are hopping on the trend of sprucing up their college living spaces.

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards helped decorate her daughter Sophia Umansky’s suite-style dorm in Washington, D.C., with luxe velvet seating that doubles as shoe storage and gold wall fans that make it feel more like home.

“We really wanted this room to reflect her style so that she would feel like she was bringing a little piece of home with her here,” Kyle told PEOPLE of the space, which they decorated with pieces from HomeGoods. “It’s hard when you leave home, so we wanted her to feel comfy and just feel like it was her own personal space.”

“It’s not going to be a cookie-cutter dorm room where everybody’s room looks the same,” she said.

Umansky wanted a “retro glam” style, so the mother-daughter duo shopped with a blush and white color scheme in mind and added pops of gold.

Lisa Rinna‘s daughter Delilah Belle Hamlin moved into her first apartment in N.Y.C. in March ahead of her freshman year at New York University, where she starts in January. In decorating her two-bedroom, two-bathroom space, the 20-year-old runway model opted for youthful decorations like gold-accented bubble chairs suspending from the ceiling, furry millennial pink pillows and a delicate metal chandelier above her bed.

“Initially I wanted black, white, and gray, but the design team suggested a pop of color,” she told Town & Country in their August issue. “We went with pink, and I’m glad we did.”

Hamlin is hardly the first young celeb to forgo the college dorm experience for a swanky apartment. Before starting at NYU in 2004, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen reportedly dropped $ 7.3 million on four penthouse apartments in Greenwich village, turning them into a massive 5,725-square-foot abode. Although they decorated the space, the Olsens never lived in the apartment, instead choosing to live separately. Ultimately, they both dropped out of the university.

However, many celebrities and their children have opted for the traditional dorm route, and have even found ways to transform their hall-style rooms (with shared bathrooms for everyone!) into glam college crash pads. Boston University alumna Olivia Culpo teamed up with eBay for an affordable line of dorm decor to make college feel more like home.

“My dorm room showcased my personality with a cozy white rug and fresh flowers. I also tried pink wallpaper,” she told PEOPLE. “Now, would opt for a more minimal, clean look,” she said. “I might also add some gold accents to make it even more stylized.”

Colorado College Student to Bring Supreme Resale Marketplace to Los Angeles

BUSINESS-MINDED: Never underestimate the business savvy and passion of a Supreme fan. Take 20-year-old Zachary Dorf, who used to consistently camp outside Supreme’s New York store, while still in high school, just so he could get his hands on the latest drops.
That devotion grew a social media fan base that later evolved into a business bringing together vendors and consumers of Supreme and other coveted streetwear brands to buy and trade, called Solepreme Con.
Saturday, Dorf brings Solepreme to Los Angeles for the first time, on Cahuenga Boulevard, for five hours of buying, selling and trading of brands such as Supreme, Off-White, Gucci and Raf Simons.
Dorf, whose father owns the winery and music venue City Winery, estimates the West Coast show, totaling some 40 vendors, will draw attendees about on par with New York, which has been about 1,000 people. He’s charging $ 25 for general admission in addition to $ 119 for a single vendor table.
Back in his teens, the University of Colorado Boulder student, who is studying entrepreneurship, would typically be one of the first 10 customers inside the Supreme store on drop days. Aside from garnering Instagram followers through his dedication, Dorf would sometimes gain insider information on drops.

The Royal College of Art Pitches a Two-Hour ‘Immersive Experience’ Show

LONDON — The Royal College of Art departed from tradition for this year’s annual fashion show showcasing works from 50 students across men’s wear, women’s wear, footwear and accessories.
Swapping the traditional catwalk for an immersive experience, the event was dubbed “A Walk Without a Cat,” and was filled with dance performances, talks and installations.
The show was held at 180 Strand, home of London Fashion Week, and upon arrival, guests were escorted through revolving doors where they were greeted by women’s wear student Sinéad O’Dwyer’s collection — a group of nude models wearing transparent body-cast molds made from fiberglass.
Guests were directed to the main seating area where they walked past works by accessories student Ramlah Wraich, who presented a collection of body-part embellished clutches, and footwear student Tabitha Ringwood’s twisted leather shoes.
The show started with a musical performance by women’s wear student Thibaut Knapp. Women’s wear student Renata Brenha Ribeiro’s collection, inspired by Latin American food and rituals, followed soon after. Models wore large headpieces that looked like dried chillies with bunched and textured dresses. Guests were presented with trays of mashed-up food that tasted like meat, but servers were unable to identify the exact ingredients.

Vin + Omi, London College of Fashion Spin Plastic Bottles into Clothes

ALL BOTTLED UP: Vin + Omi, the London-based label whose conceptual designs straddle luxury and sustainability, has partnered with London College of Fashion to launch Bin 2 Body, an initiative that will collect plastic bottles from the shows and turn them into fashion.
“We’re going to turn all of the plastic bottles into fabric and then, in August, we’re going to turn them into accessories. Then we’re going to partner up with a store and all the proceeds will go to a London salvage group,” said Omi.
Students from the college have designed bespoke bins that have been placed at the London Fashion Week Men’s show venues to collect used water bottles. The bins will be emptied daily and sent to processing labs that will transform the bottles into textiles with low microfiber release.
Vin + Omi’s designs will be showcased in September at London Fashion Week.
The Bin 2 Body scheme is part of a larger initiative at London College that began 10 years ago when the school launched a new M.A. course that put sustainability at the heart of the curriculum. London College of Fashion has since changed its curriculum across all courses to include elements of social responsibility and sustainability.

This Guy Proposed To His College Sweetheart During A Game Of Flip Cup

Two college football fans got engaged during a game of flip cup and the proposal is beer-y adorable.

In November, Bryan Cross popped the question to his college sweetheart Chelsea Maloney during a tailgate at Florida State University, the couple’s alma mater, in Tallahassee. The pair was in town with their family and friends for the Florida versus Florida State rivalry game that Thanksgiving weekend.

At the tailgate, the group set up a table for flip cup ― a popular relay-style drinking game ― and told Chelsea to stand at the end, directly across from Bryan, so that they would be opponents.

Chelsea went last on her team and when she finally flipped her red Solo cup, she noticed two magical words and a heart written on the bottom:

That’s when Bryan got down on one knee and presented her with a ring.

“I couldn’t control my tears of joy knowing that the man I loved most in the world wanted me to spend the rest of my life with him and that our dearest family and friends were there to be a part of this special moment,” Chelsea told HowHeAsked. “I obviously said ‘yes’ and our family showered us with champagne, chocolates with our pictures on it, and a beautiful photo of us in a frame for everyone to sign congratulating us.”

To make the proposal all the more perfect, Chelsea and Bryan first met years ago at an FSU tailgate where they played flip cup against one another.

“Funny thing is that neither of us remembered each other’s name so in his phone he saved my number as ‘tailgate girl’ and I saved his as ‘flip cup kid’,” Chelsea told HowHeAsked. “The next time a tailgate rolled around I got a text from ‘flip cup kid’ saying, ‘Hey, tailgate girl, come tailgate today.’ That began our tailgate love story.”

Watch the video above. Then head over to HowHeAsked for the full story

The Huffington Post reached out to the couple for comment, but had not heard back at the time of publication. This story may be updated.

Nicki Minaj Offers To Pay Fans’ College Bills On Twitter

In one hour, Nicki Minaj committed to paying thousands of dollars to help more than a dozen students pay their bills.

After one fan asked the star for some assistance, Minaj launched an impromptu tuition-savings contest on Twitter late Saturday night.

Minaj was in the midst of tweeting about a contest in which she would fly the winner to hang out with her at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, when she got a response she likely didn’t expect.

The star was interested.

Within minutes, requests flooded her feed. Minaj responded to fans’ who asked for money to pay off loans and funds to afford books, housing and tuition. Minaj asked for proof that she could verify with various schools, so fans started tweeting copies of transcripts and bill statements.

Minaj ended the night about an hour later, saying she may make the same offer sometime in the future.

TMZ reported that as of Sunday, three fans confirmed they had received funds from Minaj.

College Student Wears Girlfriend’s Shoes For The Sweetest Reason

Mark Cadiz just won the boyfriend of the year award.

The 20-year-old college student attends the University of Hawaii, Maui, with his girlfriend, Vanessa. On a recent trip to campus, his girlfriend realized she brought the wrong footwear to class. She needed closed-toe shoes for her chemistry lab, but she wore tan sandals instead.

Cadiz, being the gentleman that he is, took his shoes off and offered them to his girlfriend so she could make it to class.

“We ride to school together almost everyday,” Cadiz told The Huffington Post in a message.

“I had to wear [the sandals] for three hours,” he added. “I had one class and they didn’t even notice I was wearing her sandals.”

Cadiz took a picture of his new outfit, posted it to Twitter on Wednesday, and quickly became the internet’s Boyfriend of the Year.

In just two days, Cadiz’s tweet was retweeted more than 35,000 times, liked more than 158,000 times and received a whole lot of curious replies.

He told HuffPost that his instant viral fame has made him feel “toetally different.” (Yes, he used that pun.)

“It felt weird at first because people noticed the little things. Like how I could fit her sandals and that my toe nails were long,” he said.

But many people applauded him for being such a generous boyfriend.

Cadiz also said that some people are being mean. His tweet’s replies are filled with people commenting on the fact that his feet are the same size as his girlfriend’s. In fact, so many people have asked that Cadiz and his girlfriend had to change their Twitter bios to address the issue.

“SORRY I HAVE SMALL FEET,” Cadiz’s bio reads. His girlfriend’s says, “shoe size: 7.5”.

Cadiz doesn’t care too much about the haters, though.

What matters most is that his girlfriend made it to her chemistry lab. And that his girlfriend doesn’t have extra-large feet. She’d like to remind everyone she’s a women’s size 7.5.

Rats Beware: These Broom-Toting College Students Don’t Mess Around

This plan is as elaborate as the Mousetrap board game.

A group of college roommates attending Duquesene University in Pittsburgh faced a daunting problem when a large rat moved in to their space. Instead of cowering in fear at the threat ― like many would ― they banded together to defeat the “Rat King.”

Their plan required patience, precision, and a ridiculously clutch sweep of a broom. The women blocked off the “Rat King’s” route and prepared for battle.

“We were all freaking out,” Jody Mackin told Buzzfeed News.

After they set the trap, Mackin and her friends sprung into action. Video shows the rat flopping down the stairs like a rag doll before the boyfriend of one of the roommates sweets the animal outside.

Many Twitter users hailed the women as heroes for creating the ingenious trap.

But some felt sorry for the rat.

But many were happy that the rodent escaped intact.

Student Transforms College Rejection Letter Into Viral Work Of Art

She transformed a negative into a positive.

When Claudia Vulliamy found out that the prestigious Oxford University in England had turned her down for a place on its classics course on Wednesday, she was understandably disappointed.

But she didn’t get downhearted. Instead, the 18-year-old student at Camden School for Girls in London hacked up the letter of rejection and worked it into a painting.

Her mom, Louisa Saunders, posted a photograph of her creation to Twitter (above) and the image is now going viral.

“When I got home to see the painting, I laughed, because it was funny and also sassy,” Saunders told The Huffington Post on Saturday.

“It was nice, because I could see that she wasn’t feeling too sad about the rejection. I know it breaks some people’s hearts,” she added. “I really admired her spirit, but I wasn’t very surprised because it’s fairly typical of her ― she’s always been creative.”

Saunders’ Twitter feed was soon flooded with positive comments about her daughter’s inspired work of art:

Vuilliamy, meanwhile, told HuffPost she was “really surprised” by her artwork going viral but was “so glad that it has cheered people up.”

Usually social media can be quite brutal but it made my week,” she added to ITV News. “I just thought it was a bit of a bummer not to get in. I felt like making it into something.”

She now hopes to study at Durham University ― and continues posting new artwork, such as the piece below depicting her mom, to Instagram:

MLB Institutes Electoral College, Awards World Series To Indians

Read The Political Garbage Chute for all your daily fake news needs.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK — In a stunning and highly rare sequence of events, Major League Baseball has stripped the Chicago Cubs of their 2016 World Series championship and awarded it instead to the Cleveland Indians. Citing a desire to “keep the competition within baseball modern and relevant” Commissioner Rob Manfred told the stunned media assembled outside MLB’s headquarters the news.
2016-11-14-1479135702-5133621-20161006_Progressive_Field_before_ALDS_Game_1_between_Cleveland_and_Boston.jpg

“Major League Baseball has always believed that our game should reflect the mood, tenor, and feel of the American way of life,” Manfred told the press, “and so we met the day after the election was held last week and decided to institute an Electoral College system. The results of that system are that the Indians have now officially been declared the winners of the World Series, despite the Cubs having won more games in the seven game series.”

Manfred said MLB’s Electoral College would weigh the size of each team’s media market and “handicap” them based on a number of factors. This way, Manfred said, even though a team may score more runs, or win more games in a series, the winner will be determined in a way that makes people living in smaller, lesser-populated areas feel good about themselves, because that’s more important, obviously, than the actual winner, like, winning or whatever.”

“Look, we instituted instant replay and everyone thought that was going to fundamentally ruin baseball,” Manfred said, “and the Wild Card has been a fantastic addition to the postseason. So what’s the matter with a competitive mechanism that turns the winner into a loser, really?”

Manfred told the press that at this time, MLB plans to only implement the Electoral College in the post season, when games matter most.

“Why doesn’t it make the most sense in the world to have a system in which the person who lost actually won,” Manfred said, “and why shouldn’t that system only apply to the most important contests?”

The Cubs won the World Series the old fashioned way — by winning more games than the Indians — last month. They hadn’t won a championship in over a hundred years prior. Manfred said that MLB will be removing the World Series trophy from Wrigley Field in Chicago and taking it to its “rightful home” in Cleveland sometime in late January.

College Cougar (Erotica Quickies)

College Cougar (Erotica Quickies)

Erotica Quickies series from Best Seller Jennifer Thomas She was the head cheerleader. and now she’s the cheerleader’s coach at the local college. She’s all hot and bothered about Brandon, a 20 year old jock that she’s known for a few years. Let the games begin! Excerpt: Suddenly, I couldn’t control myself anymore. I was a woman on a mission, and I wanted to go through with this no matter what. I scuffled through my bag and found a bag of cosmetics. Rushing into the shower, I soaped my body, making sure to keep my hair dry. I had had a thorough waxing and pampering session at the salon the day before, so I didn’t have to shave – thankfully. I hadn’t had sex in over a year, and for once, I wanted to show off my waxed body to a pair of male eyes. Either Brandon would turn me down, or he would go ahead and take the opportunity. I was counting on his testosterone to see the chance for a fuck, and take it. I put on a t-shirt and white skirt after my shower, and put on some makeup. Glancing into the gym, I saw Brandon shooting the ball, jumping up. His shirt rode up his body, showing me a delectable glimpse of his toned, tanned stomach. I inhaled sharply, and my pussy clenched in response to the sight.

Bill Maher Calls College Student A ‘Little Sh*t’ For Criticizing Jerry Seinfeld

Political talk show host Bill Maher called a college writer a “little shit” on his HBO show Friday night for questioning comedian Jerry Seinfeld’s claim that college audiences are too politically correct.

After San Diego State University student Anthony Berteaux, a campus editor-at-large with The Huffington Post, penned an open letter to Jerry Seinfeld telling him he was disheartened that the comedian thinks college audiences are too quick to call jokes racist, sexist or prejudiced, Maher told him to back off during a segment on “Real Time.”

“Now, I sure wouldn’t want to be judged by what I wrote at 20, but stupid though I was in 1976, I wouldn’t have presumed to lecture George Carlin on comedy,” Maher said, referring to the late, famed comedian. “Though I sure wish George was around today to write a letter back to this kid, as only he could. But since he can’t, allow me: Dear you little shit, I’m sure you’re busy with your new letter explaining astrophysics to Stephen Hawking and giving jump shot pointers to Steph Curry, but try to get a clue.”

In an interview with ESPN earlier this month, Seinfeld echoed sentiments expressed by comedians Chris Rock and Larry the Cable Guy about young people taking offense too easily.

“I don’t play colleges, but I hear a lot of people tell me, ‘Don’t go near colleges. They’re so PC,’” Seinfeld said. “[Young people] just want to use these words: ‘That’s racist;’ ‘That’s sexist;’ ‘That’s prejudice.’ … They don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.”

In Berteaux’s open letter, he challenged Seinfeld’s argument and cited Amy Schumer as a comedian whose jokes about sensitive subjects like rape successfully highlight injustices.

“It isn’t so much that college students are too politically correct (whatever your definition of that concept is), it’s that comedy in our progressive society today can no longer afford to be crass, or provocative for the sake of being offensive,” he wrote. “Sexist humor and racist humor can no longer exist in comedy because these concepts are based on archaic ideals that have perpetrated injustice against minorities in the past.”

De Burgh got the idea for the video tour after seeing one too many “gymspirational” snapchats of his friends working out and chugging protein snakes.

“Clearly I’ve been watching too much Crocodile Hunter on YouTube,” he added.

Meet Your New Style Icon: Marilyn Monroe, Circa Her College Years

marilyn-monroe-coat-picture-1950

The show notes for Max Mara‘s fall 2015 collection taught me something I didn’t know: that Marilyn Monroe attended college classes (and loved reading, leaving behind a 400-book library when she died). The above snap of Marilyn is from a 1950 photo shoot in the backyard of a Hollywood agent, one of the years right before her career really took off, and, according to The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe by J. Randy Taraborrelli, a time period when she was taking literature classes at UCLA.

marilyn-monroe-suit-outfit-1950-personal-style-picture

The majority of photos we’ve all seen of Marilyn are either movie stills or promotional pics and they all play to her sex-bomb persona. There’s a whole other strata of her personal style though—less documented but worth paying attention to—where she’s off the clock and wearing classic basics that are less curve-hugging.

marilyn-monroe-sweatshirt-1953-picture

I dug through a lot of vintage snaps, and these were the most inspiring I saw. If you’re craving more, Life shared images from a shoot 24-year-old Marilyn did when she was still relatively unknown (so much so that the magazine declined to publish them). Her clothes, monogrammed shirt included, hinted at that bookish side, as did the photographer’s note that the images were taken when “we’d go out to Griffith Park and she’d read poetry.”

max-mara-marilyn-monroe-fall-2015-fashion-show

I’m a big fan of the way the star’s cerebral side has been reinterpreted for now. “Marilyn’s ‘me’ time menswear classics are reinvented…silhouettes are shrunken or maxi-sized,” the Max Mara notes read. “A vision which is brainy, sexy, and modern.” The show opened with Gigi Hadid, a modern-day bombshell of Marilyn caliber, pulling a camel coat around her. Joan Smalls followed in a chunky cardigan sweater that was inspired by one Marilyn wore in an iconic 1962 beach photo shoot, and Lindsey Wixson wore a camel set that turned the sweatshirt into something any sex kitten would covet.

This Is What Happens When You Prioritize Sleep in College

A college student who gets a full night’s sleep may be an anomaly. It’s almost an oxymoron and reading this your initial reaction may be, “That’s not possible.” Still, the National Sleep Foundation recently published new guidelines, “How Much Sleep Do We Really Need?” which shows that Young Adults (18-25 years) require 6-11 hours of sleep, with 7-9 being seen as the sweet spot.

I recently got through reading Arianna Huffington’s Thrive and was taken by the inspection of many people wearing their lack of sleep as a badge of honor. In “Thrive,” former Google China President Lee Kao-Fu is quoted by saying: “I naively used to compete with others to see who could sleep less. I made ‘fighting to the death’ a personal motto.”

On campus, I’m pretty involved. I’m a Peer Advisor, involved in a variety of leadership and media clubs, and I am on my fifth internship. In the fall of my sophomore year, I was working 6 jobs. People would joke with me about how I did it all, and my common response would be “Who needs sleep?” or “There ain’t no rest for the wicked.”

But why is that cool? Why is it, that we admire and aspire to sleep little. So after reading Thrive, I’ve made sleep a priority. I set a “bed-time” alarm, don’t use my phone in bed, and try to schedule sleep above many other things. Has it been easy? Of course not, but I feel much better and it’s given me quite the cynical lens of viewing others.

So I’d like to share, in Gif form what it was like to prioritize sleep:

The First Night Feels Really Weird

I got in bed at 10:00 p.m., and felt like there were so many other things I could be doing. I could do my laundry, or just go chat with my roommates? Or I could sleep.

You Get Laughed at For Your Bed Time

Get used to being called a grandparent. I have a smart watch and my roommates/friends all share an ever-so-warm eyeroll when it begins vibrating. Guys, I’m about to turn into a Pumpkin…sorry.

You Get a New Definition of Importance

Binge-watching Dexter or just shooting the shit till 3 a.m. kind of loses its appeal. Midnight openings? Who do I look like?

Staying Up Late Becomes an Actual Chore

On the rare occasion I do have to pull a close-to-all-nighter (sorry, I’m not a time-management Superman) it is a struggle. Midnight feels like 4 a.m., and you regret every minute of daylight you wasted.

You Try to Convert Your Friends to Sleep Evangelists

“I promise you’ll feel incredible.” “You know you’ll live longer?”

You Start to Judge Everyone Else’s Sleeping Habits

Wait, you’re telling me you stayed up till 4 a.m. doing what? It’s 6 a.m. why aren’t you asleep yet? You must feel great right now. Bet you wished you went to bed early last night?
These may or may not be statements I have said to my actual friends in the past week. I’m sorry.

You May Be a Little Spiteful in the Morning

‘Nuff said.

But Ultimately, You Feel Great

What Martin Luther King, Jr. Was Like In College (VIDEO)

Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of the most important figures in American history, but only a relatively small circle of people really knew him. Among them was the now-86-year-old Lerone Bennett, Jr., who attended Morehouse College with King in the 1940s. Bennett, who later became an author, journalist and historian, appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1989 along with several other of King’s close friends and opened up about what the civil rights leader was like before the rest of the world knew his name.

“I was a freshman. M.L., as we called him then, was a sophomore. He was an upperclassman, he didn’t talk to freshman back then,” Bennett joked on “The Oprah Show.”

Soon enough, the two became friends. Though he mentioned that King was, of course, a serious and brilliant student, Bennett also said that his friend had a more playful side that the public never truly saw.

“He was a lot of fun! He wore a great big, big-apple hat and draped pants,” Bennett said. “He was, in short, not the M.L. — the Martin — of history.”

This comment prompted Oprah to share a conversation she’d had with Maya Angelou about why it was so important to hear these lesser-known personal stories about great and prominent figures. “[Maya] was saying that oftentimes in history, we take heroes and we make them totally unreal to the children,” Oprah said. “She said one of the wonderful things about Dr. King was his sense of humor. And nobody ever talks about his sense of humor. So I’m glad to know he wore the big-apple hat!”

“He had a great sense of humor,” Bennett nods.

So, was it obvious to friends back then that this fun, brilliant man would become somebody of great importance? Yes and no…

“It was obvious that he was going to become a successful person. People who attend that school with M.L. will often ask, ‘Did you know then that he was going to turn the world upside down?'” Bennett says. “There’s an official answer to that, and there’s the truth. The official answer is, ‘Yes, of course we knew. Who do you think we were? Fools?’ The real answer is that we did not know then that he was going to turn the world upside down.

“The moral I draw from that is, I think, the best of all,” Bennett continues. “And that [is this]: There’s no way to tell about the mystery of the human personality. And that the next Martin Luther King, Jr., he or she may be sitting next to you.”

Remember Your Favorite Fleece From College? Designers Say It’s Time to Bring It Back

altuzarra-fleece

In his fall show, Altuzarra sent models down the runway in evening dresses and skirts styled with what we can most accurately describe as Patagonia-style fleeces. Though the styling was epically amazing, it may have fallen a little short of practical for most of us. That being said, it did nothing to stop us from swooning over each and every piece.

Altuzarra reminded us of the Patagonias of our past that we didn’t even realize we had forgotten about. So, in lieu of a black-tie event fit for the likes of his satin gowns, the winter season is the perfect time to appreciate a great fleece. Cozier than anything you will ever own, your fleece can be rocked everywhere from the ski slopes to the city streets. This winter, I definitely pulled a few of my old fleeces out of storage and—confession time—I even bought an awesome pullover from Crewcuts (seriously, shop some of the larger sizes in the boys’ department and you’ll be surprised what you can find!).

Now, some of you may have already tossed the fleeces of your past, and others are not overly enthusiastic to shell out designer prices for your fleece of choice. For both those reasons and more, we have rounded up 20 of the best fleeces of the season. Grab one before the holidays and cozy up at home with your family and friends!

How do you stay warm through the winter? Do you love the retro fleece trend as much as we do?

A College Education Might Be The Thing Standing Between You And Marriage

Blame the drop in marriage rates on declining American values, and you may be ignoring what often provides the push for couples to walk down the aisle: education.

That’s what Andrew Cherlin, a Johns Hopkins sociologist, argues in his new book Labor’s Love Lost. Cherlin told The Huffington Post that the move away from marriage has to do with the fact that those without a four-year college education face fewer job options and less financial stability, which causes them to delay marriage or eschew it altogether. A disregard of morals isn’t the culprit here.

And it’s not a subconscious choice: 34 percent of young adults cited financial security as the reason they weren’t currently married, according to a recent Pew Research Center poll.

Young adults with only a high school diploma aren’t earning as much as their parents and grandparents.

Between 1979 and 2007, young male high school graduates saw their real earnings fall by about 30 percent. Unlike their mid-century predecessors, men in this moderately educated group can’t expect to be as financially stable as their parents or grandparents, so they end up putting off marriage or avoiding it completely.

In 2013, marriage rates hit an unprecedented low, bottoming out at 50.3 percent. Compare that to 1950, when 82 percent of non-widowed women between the ages of 18 and 64 were married, and it’s hard to ignore the shift.

Cherlin ties this change to the “slow-motion collapse” of what we used to call the “working class” or “blue collar” family. Forty or 50 years ago, these families took on mid-level jobs that didn’t require higher schooling, so men were able to make enough to support a wife and kids. Many of those jobs have been lost with modern technology. (It’s worth noting that mid-century women weren’t given opportunities to be household breadwinners and often relied on husbands for economic stability.)

Without financial security, couples are taking increasingly complex relationship paths in lieu of marriage.

Nowadays, young men and women without college degrees are facing dimmer job prospects than ever, so they’re avoiding marriage. Without a stable income, it’s not advantageous for either partner — man or woman — to enter into a seemingly permanent union.

“More and more of the moderately educated young adults, those without college degrees, are having kids in living-together relationships, often ending those relationships after a couple of years, starting another one, perhaps having a kid in another relationship and building unstable, complex families,” he said.

Of course, this marriage gap wouldn’t have happened if we didn’t shift our norms since mid-century America. It’s now more acceptable and common for couples to cohabit and have children before marriage. But the big difference between college grads and those without a degree is that cohabiting college grads tend to be more economically stable and make it to the altar before they have children, while the less educated are having children before marriage and then breaking up.

Closing the marriage gap may involve putting more folks without college degrees on the path to stable, mid-level jobs.

It’s this “interaction effect between a changing economy and changing attitudes,” as Cherlin put it, that he argues has led to the marriage gap.

The remedies? Cherlin said that more education is needed — not in the form of four-year college degrees, but vocational education at community colleges that can put young adults on the path to entering the few mid-level jobs that are left. He also said that labor market interventions, like strengthening unions and increasing the minimum wage, might bring the moderately-educated closer to their college graduate counterparts when it comes to marriage.

“As far as I can tell, a college degree is really the closest thing we have to a class boundary in the US,” Cherlin said. “Certainly in terms of family life.”

‘Myth and Image’ at El Camino College Art Gallery

Now on view at the El Camino College Art Gallery, Myth and Image is an exhibition that explores the relationship of traditional mythology to contemporary visual imagery. The exhibit was organized by ECC Gallery Director Susanna Meiers, who comments that the show is “aimed at getting the viewer to consider the mythological in terms of connection with the numinous within us all.”

The 24 participating Southern California artists offer their individual interpretations of myths ranging from Classical Greek and Roman to East Indian, Latin American and Iranian. Each visual image is accompanied by a retelling of the myth.

Four of the exhibition’s images, along with the retellings that accompany them are featured below:

Corey Sewelson, Crocus Messenger, Acrylic and oil on wood, 36 x 42 inches

Hermes, the trickster god of transitions and boundaries, and the human, Crocus were friends who often played discus. Hermes killed Crocus by accidentally hitting him in the head with the discus. He was so distraught that he transformed his friend’s body into the Crocus flower we know today.

This is not at all a literal illustration of this story. There is a mix of images from this Crocus story as well as some symbols of Hermes attributes and life. Hermes was the god of travelers, often shuttling back and forth between the two worlds of the gods and mortals. He was on the move so much of the time that I felt the image of the uprooted home helped convey that mobility. He was the messenger of the gods, primarily of Zeus, his father. Zeus often appeared in the form of an eagle, which in my painting shows him watching over Hermes. His typical attributes and symbols are shown- the winged sandals, pouch, cap, and caduceus staff. An abstract image of the crocus flower appears in the lower right.

What appealed to me in the Crocus creation story was that Hermes demonstrated such devotion and humanity in wanting to memorialize his friend. He created a beautiful new species of flower so that mortals would enjoy the remembrance, and, since the crocus is a perennial, it will be renewed each year as a perpetual reminder.

Roxene Rockwell, Baucis and Philemon, Acrylic on canvas, 40 x 50 inches

In my work I often use trees to symbolize humans. For me trees metaphorically represent all of us, as we stand strong or physically frail, bending resiliently with life changes or succumbing to old age.

I was drawn to the Greek myth about Baucis and Philemon for their great kindness and enduring love, and for how they turned into trees. This couple wished to die together and so doing would stay together forever. Because of their benevolence the Greek god Zeus granted their wish by turning them into trees standing side by side as their lives as humans ended.

Nancy Mozur, Phane, Gouache and oil crayon on paper, 6 5/16 x 7 3/16 inches

I like to wed various myths together with images that emerge from within my mind. The phoenix bird is a tale of regeneration. Its fate is to burn up and through its remains, rises to be born again. That renewal repeats itself symbolically as carbon ashes give way to the diamond as new life. Fire plays an important element in this tale. Heat throughout myths often results in change from destruction to creation. In the Orphic religion, the hot passion between the black-winged Night and the Wind produces the silver egg of Eros. Within the fiery depths of the Egyptian underworld, the serpent Apophis battles against the fist of Amun furthering the soul’s journey towards a renewed Sun God. As my imagination, sputters, inflames and blazes, visions appear, waiting to be transformed.

2014-09-06-IcarusFalling1994001.jpg

Jim Morphesis, The Fall of Icarus, 1994, Oil on wood panel with wood frame, 42.5 x 28.5 inches

Ovid’s story of Daedalus and Icarus is the tale of a loving father’s loss of his son. It is also the story of youthful exuberance and the first mortal hero to fly god-like over land and sea.

Daedalus was a great craftsman and inventor who had gone to Crete to construct the labyrinth for King Minos. When his task was completed, Daedalus petitioned the king for permission to return home, but Minos, not wanting the only man who knew the secret of the labyrinth to leave, refused the request. Minos possessed the earth and the sea, but not the sky. And so Daedalus planned to make his ill-omened escape by constructing wings of feathers, wax and linen for himself and his son, Icarus.

With ease father and son took flight. Their dual shadows passed over Samos, the fields of Delos, the villages of Paros and out over the sea. The exhilaration of flight, and the experience of seeing the world as no other human had, compelled Icarus to disobey his father and soar higher. When Icarus reached the realm of Apollo and his chariot, the heat of the sun melted the wax, feathers slipped away and Icarus fell.

Greek myths have a way of offering even the most tragic heroes the means for redemption. In my painting, with broken-hearted Daedalus looking down helplessly, foolish and courageous Icarus plummets toward an apocalyptic landscape and a final dive in the sea that will forever bare his name and render Icarus immortal.

Remarks to Babson College

Babson College Commencement 2014: Wellesley, Massachusetts

Thank you so much for the warm welcome.

My fellow entrepreneurs: It is a privilege to be among the first people to congratulate you on completing your time at Babson.

I am especially honored to be here because I have had the privilege of working with the Babson community and I am in awe of what you do.

There are many incredible colleges that teach business.

But there is only one school that has focused its curriculum on entrepreneurship for the past 35 years …

— only one school whose undergraduate and graduate programs are ranked No. 1 in entrepreneurship…

–and only one school that has literally written the book on “the new entrepreneurial leader.”

The path you’ve embarked on is truly exciting, but it can also be challenging.

Here’s what Babson has taught you: Being an entrepreneur isn’t just a job title, and it isn’t just about starting a company. It’s a state of mind.

It’s about seeing connections others can’t, seizing opportunities others won’t, and forging new directions that others haven’t.

It’s about being entrepreneurial wherever you are and in whatever you do.

It’s about having the courage to give in to passion for an idea that makes your heart race.

If it doesn’t scare you, you’re probably not dreaming big enough.

Here is what I’ve learned: We may live in an age of instant messaging, instant gratification, and Instagram, but there is no way to short circuit the path to success. It takes hard work, tenacity and patience.

There are many things you can do overnight. You can write a decent paper. You can put the finishing touches on a runway show. I hear you can even have a pretty good time at Roger’s Pub.

But there is no such thing as an overnight success.

It’s a myth that glosses over what being an entrepreneur is all about. As Biz Stone, one of the founders of Twitter, put it: “Timing, perseverance, and 10 years of really hard work will eventually make you look like an overnight success.”

The good news is that if you’re willing to pursue your passion, put in the hard work, and believe in yourself, you will succeed.

That’s something that I didn’t know when I was your age.

When I was sitting where you are today, I had no idea what I wanted to do.

I had grown up on a farm outside of Philadelphia. I was a tomboy, who spent all of my time playing outdoors with my three brothers. My interest in fashion was limited.

In fact, I didn’t put on a dress until my senior prom, but fashion was clearly in my DNA. My parents had impeccable style. I channeled their love for beauty into a love for art and design, and went to the University of Pennsylvania to study art history.

I applied for many jobs my senior year of college. There was a Yugoslavian designer whose clothes my mother wore. His name was Zoran and three days before graduation, I cold-called him and asked for a job. He said yes, on one condition — I had to start in a week. On graduation day, all I could think about was finding an apartment in New York.

It was a whole new world. Zoran was a true eccentric with a long black beard that last year’s Red Sox team would have admired. He was minimalist. Everything in the office was white, there were no chairs — and the vodka started flowing at 10 a.m.

As his assistant, I did everything from getting coffee to running interference. People would come to the office, and Zoran would hide in the bathroom. I’d have to pretend he wasn’t there.

It was a fantastic entrée into the fashion industry. I was exposed to all the elements of a designer’s world, from designing a collection to managing press to learning about the business side. Fashion quickly became my passion.

While at Zoran, I was offered a job at Harper’s Bazaar. From there, I moved into PR and marketing – first at Ralph Lauren, then at Vera Wang, and then working for Loewe.

What I learned is what Babson taught all of you: Even if you’re not yet an entrepreneur, you can be entrepreneurial in everything you do. If you view each stop as an opportunity to learn something, there is always something you will take away from that experience.

While at Loewe, I was offered the job of president at about the same time that I learned I was pregnant with my third son. I realized I couldn’t do that job and be the kind of mom I wanted to be so I decided to take some time off to focus on my family. It was a tough decision. Having a career was important to me — and I knew it would be part of my life again.

It was during that time that I began developing the concept for my company. It all started when I noticed a void in my own closet for beautifully designed, classic pieces that didn’t cost a fortune. It wasn’t just a void in my closet; it turned out to be a white space in the market.

I started working out of my apartment with a small team that could help me turn my concept into a reality.

Like most start-ups, we had to fundraise. I asked a lot of people I knew to invest, including some people who couldn’t easily afford it. I was terrified of losing people’s money, so I told them “only invest if you’re prepared to lose it.” Over 100 people said yes.

With the money we raised and a personal investment, we set up an office in Hong Kong for production and sourcing and I traveled there often. When I was home, we talked every evening. Given the time difference, that meant I’d be on conference calls until 3 or 4 in the morning. On those nights, my definition of success was not dozing off on the phone.

We also leased a small space on a low-rent corner of Manhattan–and ordered a first shipment of products to fill it. I was warned many times against opening a retail store. There were a lot of naysayers who thought I should start with a wholesale partner and build the brand from there. But I wanted a unique experience. Retail design at the time was very spare. I wanted to do something different. I wanted the boutique to be warm and inviting, like you were walking into a room in someone’s home. It was also unusual to launch with multiple categories and ecommerce, but from Day 1 it was a lifestyle brand.

We opened our first store in February 2004, during New York Fashion Week. My stepdaughters and I worked through the night to get everything ready. We opened our doors at 10 — without the actual doors, which hadn’t arrived. I was afraid no one would come, but thankfully, the space became so packed that women were trying on clothes in the middle of the store. By 6 p.m., we’d sold through nearly all of our inventory.

A few months later, we got a call from Oprah. I thought it was one of my brothers playing a joke on me. “Yes sure, I’ll cancel spring break to be on Oprah.”

After I appeared on Oprah, our website got 8 million hits. The media called us an overnight success. I guess that made sense — if you didn’t count the 20,000 hours we put into building the business up to that day, or the combined half a million hours we all spent learning the industry in the years before that.

Today, we are a global brand with more than 120 freestanding boutiques and a presence in more than 3,000 department and specialty stores worldwide.

From the beginning, one of the reasons I wanted to start a company was to start a foundation. Social responsibility was always part of the business plan. This was not always viewed as a positive — some people told me never to mention the word social responsibility and business in the same sentence. That only made me more determined.

I knew our foundation would benefit women and children. We had learned so much from our experiences starting a business that we thought we could help other women who wanted to do the same.

In 2009 we launched our foundation to support the economic empowerment of women entrepreneurs and their families. It has been incredibly meaningful not only to me personally, but to our customer, our employees and our business partners, all of whom care about giving back and helping women.

In 2012, we partnered with Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses to offer a nine-week MBA course for promising women entrepreneurs with no formal business education. I am proud to say that the school that helped us design that program was Babson.

This January, in partnership with Bank of America, we launched an initiative called Elizabeth Street Capital, named for the location of our first store. Through this initiative we are providing women entrepreneurs with access to the capital and mentoring support they need to launch and scale their businesses. I hope some of you will come to us when you’re ready!

Today, it has been 10 years since we launched and in many ways I feel like we’re just beginning, but I never could have gotten here overnight.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received from my parents is to think of negativity as noise. Believe in yourself and what you’re doing.

Remember: If the most unique ideas were obvious to everyone, there wouldn’t be entrepreneurs. The one thing that every entrepreneurial journey has in common is that there are many, many steps on the road to success.

Thank you for the opportunity today to be a part of yours.

The Craziest College Confessions Of 2013 (VIDEO)

People do crazy things in college and this year was no exception. Thankfully, we have a handy video that compiles the craziest confessions from students in 2013.

The video was made by our buddies at BuzzFeed, and it’s based off of various websites where students make anonymous confessions.

Examples in the video include one from Arizona State University: “I met someone here who thought a thesaurus was a dinosaur.” Another that’s just weird is “Sometimes I dig a hole in my backyard and pretend I’m a carrot.”

There’s also one from this year’s No. 1 party school, the University of Iowa: “This morning I woke up in jail. Safe to say the government shut down doesn’t refer to police as well.” And speaking of partying, apparently there’s someone at Brown University who’s getting laid off a fake British accent.

Watch the craziest college confessions of 2013 in the video above.

Kaufmann and Schwitters have built this text’s reputation on clear and concise exposition, numerous examples, and plentiful problem sets. This traditional text consistently reinforces the following common thread: learn a skill; practice the skill to help solve equations; and then apply what you have learned to solve application problems. This simple, straightforward approach has helped many students grasp and apply fundamental problem solving skills necessary for future mathematics courses. Algebraic ideas are developed in a logical sequence, and in an easy-to-read manner, without excessive vocabulary and formalism. The open and uncluttered design helps keep students focused on the concepts while minimizing distractions. Problems and examples reference a broad range of topics, as well as career areas such as electronics, mechanics, and health, showing students that mathematics is part of everyday life. The text’s resource package–anchored by Enhanced WebAssign, an online homework management tool–saves instructors time while also providing additional help and skill-building practice for students outside of class.
