Martine Rose’s Rise From Cult Designer to Commercial Success

London-based Martine Rose has become a cult figure in men’s wear since launching her eponymous collection with a few shirts in 2007. She seamlessly blends tailoring with streetwear using quintessentially British youth culture references such as punk and rave movements that she blends with her Jamaican heritage to create an explosion of colors and textures — and a few eye-popping silhouettes such as wide-leg trousers and exaggerated button-down shirts.

Hodinkee Adds Chief Commercial Officer to Scale Retail Operations

Hodinkee is ramping up its retail presence.
The omnichannel destination for watch collectors — offering a blog, podcast, e-commerce site, a print magazine, and an events and conference program — has hired Russell Kelly as its first chief commercial officer.
Kelly, who joins Hodinkee from Tudor Watch USA, where he served as brand manager and helped oversee Rolex’s relaunch in the U.S., will lead the company’s retail division. Kelly’s first day is today and he will report to Hodinkee chief executive officer and founder Benjamin Clymer.
Kelly will devise Hodinkee’s retail strategies to build its presence in the market, oversee customer service personnel, manage wholesale partnerships and brand collaborations, help develop new products and ensure overall consumer satisfaction.

Kim Kardashian Finally Reacts To Kendall’s Pepsi Commercial

Like the generic protest signs from the varied millennials in that infamous Kendall Jenner ad, Kim Kardashian is finally going to “join the conversation.”

At this point, Jenner’s Pepsi commercial, once called “So Tone-Deaf It Hurts” by HuffPost’s own Cole Delbyck, is universally seen as a bad idea. In the ad, which was released in April, Jenner joins a crowd of “protesters” and hands a can of Pepsi to a police officer, seemingly as a peace offering. 

The officer smiles, the crowd loves it: World peace achieved!

Many criticized the ad for its portrayal of police and protester relations, as well as the company for trying to capitalize on the Black Lives Matter movement and anti-Trump protests in order to sell soda. Whether it was the intention or not, images of the commercial and actual protests put side-by-side are hard to ignore.

In a statement, the company said, “Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding. Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologize.” The ad was pulled within 24 hours of its release

Reactions from Jenner and the Kardashians have been scant, but while talking to Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live” Sunday, Kardashian, Jenner’s older half-sister, opened up about the controversy.

“She totally understood at the end of the day, and she felt awful for it, and she just wants to move on from it,” she said.

The “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star said she didn’t see the ad until it had already received the backlash. She adds, “Any time someone does anything, they don’t have bad intentions of doing it a certain way. Especially Kendall’s so sensitive, she would never mean for anyone to perceive anything in a negative way.”

Jenner obviously didn’t think the ad would get such a strong response. Before the backlash, the model told Women’s Wear Daily, “The whole concept is really something that I’m about, so it was just fun to be a part of.”

It’s probably safe to say her feelings have changed.

In Dubai, Designers Embrace a More Seasonless, Commercial Approach

DUBAI — Despite a rare downpour in the desert over the weekend, 10,000 people from Dubai and the region came out in force to see regional designers showcase their latest collections at Fashion Forward, the emirate’s answer to a fashion week.
The key themes that emerged were wearable, seasonless collections, with an emphasis on comfort. In a region known for its interest in couture, ready-to-wear designers showed a move toward practical dressing with a decidedly feminist edge.
“Dubai is a retail capital, something that can be a really big advantage for our young designers,” said Bong Guerrero, chief executive officer of Fashion Forward. “Social media gives emerging talent the opportunity to take their runway designs directly to their audience, and it creates a lot of buzz and demand right after the shows.”
With retail sales generally slowing in the area, retailers are looking for new brands to discover. Maria Gold Knudsen, head of style and content at Ounass.com, a new luxury retail platform in the Middle East, said the company is featuring several regional designers alongside well-established global brand names. “We have capsule collections launched exclusively for us [that] do very well. We are always on the lookout for new brands from the region.”

Tiffany has enlisted some pop power for its first Super Bowl advertisement.
Lady Gaga will be featured in a 60-second spot, wearing the American jeweler’s forthcoming HardWear commercial collection.
“In New York, you’re born knowing that Tiffany is the best and that it is where the magic happens. The brand is definitive and iconic, yet continues to push and evolve with the times. To me, Tiffany represents timeless American jewelry,” Lady Gaga said in a statement.
The ad campaign — and its corresponding images — were captured by David Sims. Looks were styled by Grace Coddington, an ongoing creative collaborator of Tiffany’s.
Tiffany has produced the Super Bowl’s Vince Lombardi Trophy for the past 50 years. It is crafted in the U.S., in the state of Rhode Island.
HardWear — one of the last design projects overseen by outgoing creative director Francesca Amfitheatrof — is due to hit Tiffany’s web site on April 18, rolling into stores on April 28. The designs will become available for pre-order on Feb. 5 — Super Bowl Sunday.
They are comprised of 18-karat gold and sterling silver, and are inspired by archival unisex bracelets originally designed by Tiffany in 1971. The range will include rings, pendants, earrings and necklaces.

Esurance is kicking off LGBT Pride Week with an all-inclusive commercial and social media campaign.

The auto insurance provider is releasing a video, #EqualDreams, in which children and gay teen guests at a June 13 wedding are asked to describe their own dream ceremonies. The responses are both inspiring and adorable.

“At my wedding day, all my friends and family and my doggies and my friends’ and family’s doggies and my cousin’s doggies…will be there, and it’s gonna be the best day of my life,” one tot proclaims. Another adds: “If my husband doesn’t like the cake, he will buy his own cake.”

The clip, which is being released ahead of what officials hope is a victory for same-sex marriage at the U.S. Supreme Court this month, takes a more bittersweet turn when one lesbian guest speaks about her own experience growing up.

In the action-comedy The Interview, Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen) run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show “Skylark Tonight.” When they discover that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. As Dave and Aaron prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them, perhaps the two least-qualified men imaginable, to assassinate Kim Jong-un.

EXPO/ CHICAGO swung open its doors and the Contemporary and MODERN ART Collectors pushed in.

The 35,000 attendees showed their approval by looking, learning, pondering and purchasing in such a way that the THIRD International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern ART was ensured a commercial success rating and guaranteed the privilege of blanketing the city once again in 2015 with its trove of FORUMS, Think Tanks, Performance ARTS, Concerts and plethora of Free Programs for the Public and Civic Cultural Events initiated by EXPO/CHICAGO. The Gala Show at the MCA, David Bowie Is…….. was only one of the exclusive events produced around the Art Fair generating a great fervor of excitement.

Alice Walton, daughter of Wal-Mart founder and patron/founder herself of the CRYSTAL BRIDGES Museum of American Art moved through the quickly crowding but amiable aisles at the VIP VERNISSAGE Opening along with collector groups from ART museums across the country, as well as highly informed collectors Helen and Sam Zell who had welcomed some out of town collectors for a private viewing of their sophisticated collection the previous night.

Financier Michael Sacks, ARTS Patron Neil Bluhm, Groupon CEO Eric Lefkofsky, Former Museum of Contemporary Art Chairman and long-time collector of American modern masters Allen Turner, and Star Wars creator George Lucas, who is building the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art along the city’s lakefront, all were first nighters. The basketball star Shaq O’Neal guest curated a segment at the fair, “SHAQ Loves People,” a non-profit exhibition, and was stopped in the opening night aisles to be photographed by collectors sharing a passion for sports. Friends TV star David Schwimmer, Art philanthropists King and Caryn Harris and others who are familiar faces at the International Art Shows joined the opening night rush, prompting the Dealers to nod approvingly and utter, “Yes, the right Collectors are here.”

Alvaro Alcazar of his eponymous gallery in Madrid uttered, “As soon as I saw who was coming into my gallery space at Thursday’s opening, I knew I was at the right fair.” Other gallerists were delighted to meet, dialogue and sell to new collectors. A director at Marlborough was delighted that he was meeting new collectors at their first year showing in Chicago.

Of the other 140 Dealers meticulously placed around the vast Navy Pier environs, LISSON Gallery of London, Milan and soon to be New York was a new addition to EXPO as was MARLBOROUGH who not only showed an elegant Santiago Calatrava,”2014 untitled Marble Sculpture” (which sold) but was showing a sculpture by muti-media Artist Paula Crown of Chicago and Aspen and with whom they are mounting a show in New York this winter.

Commerce is what the modern ART FAIR must have in order to be a World Class Cultural Institution as well as a selling fair, reaching out to involve all aspects of the ART and ART EDUCATION and CULTURAL SYSTEM. “For our third edition of the fair,” says Tony Karman, President and Director of EXPO/ CHICAGO, “I am very proud we have hit our mark in attracting important galleries and now new collectors as well. EXPO/CHICAGO both gave and got Broad Civic Support.”

A new star on the scene, artist Paula Crown gave a well-attended talk in front of a smaller replica of an idea wall in her downtown studio at the Fair designed in collaboration with MacArthur Fellow and “Genius” Grant winner Jeanne Gang whose Studio Gang helped design the EXPO space as well as the ceiling-suspended cones that both divide and define the spatial areas for the fair. The idea or inspiration wall titled STUDIO-WALL gave Crown’s collectors and lecture attendees a look into her inspiration and thought process in creating her Art, as much as the MRI portraits of her Brain that hang in her original gallery workspace.

The Richard Gray Gallery of Chicago and New York in the prominent Booth 310 displayed a gathering of AGORA Figures by Magdalena Abrakanowicz, consistent with the gallery’s ability to bring Public Sculpture into the collectible category. He also showed a steel sculpture, “Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos” by Rashid Johnson for $ 135,000. Gray is always at favorite amongst its loyal fair devotees.

The dinners, lectures, FORUMS and outside exhibitions at the ART INSTITUTE, the MCA, The ARTS CLUB, Millennium Park, even the boat cruises after the Navy Pier events did not distract either the Collectors or the Academics or Curators and Museum Directors or Art Students but rather served to bring them all together as if under one of the giant cones designed for the EXPO by Jeanne Gang.

The organizers of EXPO CHICAGO are elated they have made another step forward into the ranks of the World Class ART FAIR.

Busta Rhymes Stars In ‘Swagger Wagon,’ A Terrible Commercial For Toyota’s Minivan

Oh, Busta Rhymes, what have you done?

There are some truly awful commercials out there, but none of them are quite as horrendous as the newest commercial for the 2015 Toyota Sienna minivan — not even the sum of that smug, know-it-all Flo. Somehow convincing themselves that is acceptable to dub their vehicle the “Swagger Wagon,” Toyota’s bloodlust only grew stronger, opting to promote the SwagWag through a three-minute rap video. The Neubert family raps about things that the ears dare not comprehend over a trap-styled beat, until Busta Rhymes comes in around 1:45.

Before you write-off Busta as a sell-out, have some faith. He’s still throwing crazy shows with people climbing in through the roof, hanging off of rafters, as Busta repeatedly yells into the microphone, “OH SHIT! THERE’S A GUY ON THE ROOF!”
