Dennis Basso Opens First Store in Qatar

An outdoor plaza shopping center anchored by Galeries Lafayette is the home to Dennis Basso’s first store in Doha.
Basso’s 1,800-square-foot unit is near the Cartier, Graff and Van Cleef & Arpels boutiques. Back in New York, the designer said Friday that he hopes this first store will lead to others in the Midde East. The opening was made possible through the Ali Bin Ali Holding company. Designed by Ali Bin Ali’s in-house team, Basso said the decor consists of a range of cream-colored interiors with pale gray marble and vaulted high ceilings. It is also a corner store, which allows for greater visibility, enhanced by the valet car service offered near the store’s entrance.
One of the greatest features from the designer’s point of view is the outdoor air conditioning provided by cool air that is blasted upward through grates. While Qatari woman generally wear abayas and head scarves on the street, their attire tends to be more colorful or embellished when at home, at special events or traveling. “When they’re going to a gala, they really want to be gala,” Basso said, adding that his collection was well-received at the launch, which included a dinner and an in-store event.

Dennis Basso Features Mary J. Blige in Ads, Provides Fur for J.Lo’s ‘Dinero’ Music Video

HE’S GOT TALENT: Dennis Basso has reason to sing, having lined up Mary J. Blige for his newest ad campaign and suited up Jennifer Lopez for the cover of her latest single.
Blige, a friend who has attended many of the designer’s fashion shows over the years, was the right choice for a number of reasons, he said. “The world of music is always strong, but it seems stronger than ever. She’s a modern-day woman, extremely talented, very beautiful and she represents a powerful woman,” Basso said. “I just like who she is and what she stands for. Being part of the music industry is also exciting.”
“Very involved with orchestrating the feeling and the look” of the shoot, the designer was on location when Bernard Hunt photographed Blige for the new campaign. “For someone who performs in front of tens of thousands of people, it was very cute to see her focused on getting it right. She was not Mary J. the singer. She was Mary J. the singer, who is now the high fashion model,” Basso said. “She is a very kind, humble woman. I like that about her.”
Blige, who just released a new single “Only Love,” was photographed wearing

Dennis Basso Unveiling Daytime Ready-to-Wear in 35th Anniversary Collection

In tandem with the 35th anniversary of his eponymous label, Dennis Basso will introduce his first daytime ready-to-wear collection at his runway show Monday at St. Bartholomew’s Church during New York Fashion Week.
“We’ve found that as the world changes and rearranges, women are not getting as dressed up anymore,” observed Basso, who maintains a “fully vertical” 30,000-square-foot atelier in Long Island City, N.Y. “They’re wearing daytime clothes in the evening mixed with evening pieces and it’s evolved to a whole different level.”
Basso, who for years has made casual ready-to-wear pieces available at a lesser price point to customers of his QVC line, has called this latest collection “sporty,” but he asserts he won’t be producing high-end jogging suits — at least not yet.
“We’re making beautiful leather skirts, cashmere jackets and flannel with some embroidery,” continued Basso. “When I started out in 1983 nobody would ever wear a sparkle or hanging earrings in the afternoon. That’s all changed. Today everyone is mixing everything up and we’re able to incorporate this on the runway with, of course, the big gorgeous furs and eveningwear the Dennis Basso brand has been known for.”
“I’m coming out from the evening and going daytime,” added Basso with
