Marco de Vincenzo Supports Fight Against HIV and AIDS

SAY IT WITH A BAG: Italian designer Marco de Vincenzo is supporting the fight against the HIV and AIDS diseases through a special collaboration with Italian nonprofit association Anlaids.
On Dec. 1, to coincide with World AIDS Day, de Vincenzo will donate the entire proceeds from the sale of its Starry bag embellished with the red ribbon to the association. The bag retailing at 1,250 euros can be purchased through Farfetch.
First debuted during the fall 2018 runway show last February, the bag — a white shoulder-style matching a canvas, beaded body with leather piping — shows the red ribbon symbol, traditionally associated with the fight against the disease. The new range of Starry bags featured in the show included several other iterations with different iconographies, including a vigil candle and a dark-skinned hand holding a light-skinned one. Conceived as statement bags, they sent a message of inclusivity.
“I was very young when I had the feeling the issue would have never concerned me. Then movies, documentaries, symbols and eventually real life came through. When people close to me got sick, HIV — like many other things — became part of my life. I discovered in those moments how misinformed we were, how

A Daughter’s Fight for Justice for Slayings of Her Mom & Grandma That Led to Her Dad’s Arrest

When Alison Dupras learned that her mother and grandmother had been found dead in December — both fatally shot at home and left for days — the name of the killer came immediately to mind.

“I know that my father did this, I knew that as soon as I knew what had happened,” Alison tells PEOPLE. “I knew it right away. Right then and there, I knew.”

She even confronted dad Alan Dupras and implored him to turn himself in, but to no avail. “That’s all I wanted was for him to confess, either to me or to the authorities,” Alison says, “and I just knew that wasn’t going to happen.”

Alison was in regular contact with authorities during their months-long investigation and kept up public pressure for an arrest. She reportedly held a protest at the district attorney’s office in late July.

“We are gathering silently and peacefully to let (the district attorney) know that we as a community cannot accept anything other than an arrest and full trial…” she said then, according to the Fresno Bee. “I have been told the detectives are certain of who has committed this atrocity and any jury would find the suspect guilty.”

Alan, 58, never went to the police. But on Sept. 25 — nine months after the double shooting of his estranged wife, retired elementary school principal Jennifer Dupras, 55, and her 88-year-old mother, Cynthia Houk — authorities came to him.

Arrested at his home in Kingsburg, California, Alan faces charges of murder as well as possession of assault weapons, vandalism and two counts of arson.

He has pleaded not guilty and his attorney, Mark Broughton, dismissed the case as “purely circumstantial,” without eyewitnesses, a murder weapon or a confession.

Investigators, however, said they discovered enough proof to believe he was responsible.

• For more on the life and slaying of Jennifer Dupras and her mom and the arrest of Alan Dupras, subscribe now to PEOPLE or pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday.

Speaking to reporters the same day as Alan’s arrest, Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims cited “technology and digital data” that helped implicate him as well as evidence “received just this month” that was “needed to confirm that he was in fact the suspect.” Mims also said there was signs the slayings were premeditated.

“We do know that he suspected there was a relationship between Jennifer and another man,” she said of Alan, “and those are the possibilities that we’re looking at as far as motive.”

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

A search warrant and supporting affidavit released this summer, before Alan’s arrest, further detailed out a series of allegedly incriminating discoveries in the murder investigation. For example, in December, investigators said they learned from a relative of Alan’s that he drunkenly “bragged” about setting Houk’s car on fire the month before she was killed.

He’d also researched ways to disable the computer in his truck in order to hide its location while driving, the affidavit alleges.

Two Lives Cut Short

The bodies of Jennifer and her mother were found in Houk’s Fresno home on Dec. 11, two days after both had been shot. The homicides — unusual for the area — came just as Jennifer seemed to be getting everything in her life in order.

Having recently retired from a 26-year career in education, she moved in with her mom and filed for divorce from Alan, ending a troubled 26-year marriage.

“She told me she was the happiest she had ever been,” Jennifer’s friend Kelly Rosales tells PEOPLE. “You could see it. I ran into her at a restaurant one night and she had the biggest smile. She was just light. She was just airy.”

Jennifer had even recently started dating again.

“She found someone who was really sweet to her,” her daughter says. “I’m not surprised, because she’s so perfect.”

RELATED: A Burning Car, Burning Building & Double Murder — Unraveling Estranged Husband’s Alleged Vendetta

Alan, says Alison, had “turned into this person with no hobbies and no interests and no life of his own.” Alison also says he was a heavy drinker prone to aggression when intoxicated, but he had been sober for about seven years until Jennifer announced she was ending things.

Alison says that when her mom decided to leave him Alan “was like, ‘I don’t know how she can do this to me,’ very much taking the victim kind of stance. He was pretty delusional about the whole situation.”

After the slayings, Alison told police about alleged “incidents of domestic violence” that were never reported, according to the search warrant affidavit.

Alison tells PEOPLE the deaths of her mother and grandmother have made her even more aware of the complicated burden faced by women in abusive relationships. She urges others to be vigilant and take steps to protect themselves.

“That’s my biggest takeaway,” she says, “and my biggest message.”

Is a Proxy Fight Next for Randa?

AT WHAT COST:  Perry Ellis International’s Special Committee on Wednesday reiterated its intention to proceed with George Feldenkreis’ $ 437 million offer to take the company private, a transaction that was inked on June 16. That dashed the wishes of Randa Accessories, which had hoped for a second, third and fourth chance to at least engage in talks over its nonbinding $ 444 million offer.
Randa has maintained that it intends to continue pursuing a purchase of Perry Ellis, but it doesn’t have many options left. According to the Special Committee on Wednesday, regulatory authorities already granted early termination of the 30-day waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976, clearing the way for the filing of the preliminary proxy last week. All that’s left is determining the date for the special shareholders’ meeting so investors can vote yay or nay on the planned deal.
Randa could elect to do a proxy fight, but at what cost? A banker not connected to the Perry Ellis-Randa battle — he’s requested anonymity because of his work with corporate clients in connection with proxy fights from activist investors — said, “A proxy fight is very expensive, and I’m not sure what it achieves here. Balenciaga Apologizes to Chinese Customers for Fight at Printemps

BEIJING — A four-second video clip of a violent scuffle involving several Balenciaga customers at Printemps in Paris has prompted an apology from the brand, after it fielded accusations that it discriminated against Chinese shoppers.
According to the user who uploaded the video, the fight broke out when French shoppers attempted to enter, bypassing a line of Chinese customers waiting for their turn.
“Boycott Balenciaga discriminating against Chinese. Really angry, queuing up and yet get hit by the people cutting in line. From now on, buy Chinese Li Ning [the sportswear brand],” the video caption read, adding that Balenciaga would not be able to sell its shoes if Chinese consumers stopped buying them. Since posting, it has been viewed over 820,000 times.
The brand apologized in a statement on Thursday saying, “The house of Balenciaga regrets the incident that took place yesterday morning at a department store in Paris while customers were waiting to enter its corner shop. The security staff acted immediately to restore the calm. Balenciaga sincerely apologizes to the customers who were present and reaffirms its strong commitment to respect equally all its customers.”
The poster of the video wrote that every day she lined up to buy Balenciaga sneakers, and on a daily

Abercrombie & Fitch Adopts New Policy for Sourcing Wood-Based Fabrics to Fight Deforestation

In collaboration with the Rainforest Action Network, Abercrombie & Fitch Co. has unveiled a new policy for the sourcing and use of wood-based fabrics, including rayon, viscose and Modal in its clothes.
Going forward, Abercrombie & Fitch has committed to tracing the sources of all wood-based fabrics used in its own clothing lines and to eliminate by the middle of next year any sources that are affiliated with the destruction of endangered forests and associated with the violations of human rights. The policy applies to its namesake brand, as well as its abercrombie kids and Hollister labels.
By making this pledge, A&F joins a roster of apparel companies trying to address deforestation and human rights abuses in their respective supply chains. The company, along with Ralph Lauren and Victoria’s Secret (L Brands) are among the few major U.S.-based companies publicly acknowledging these issues.
A&F’s policy and initiative is in line with the Rainforest Action Network. The group’s “Out of Fashion” campaign has been calling attention to the risks that controversial wood-based fabrics pose to endangered forests and human rights in Indonesia and elsewhere.

John Oliver Rallies ‘Time-Wasters And Troublemakers’ To Fight The FCC

John Oliver is calling on everyone who’s ever wasted time on the Internet ― even trolls ― to unite for a common cause: net neutrality.

On Sunday, the host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” explained the issue and shared how important it was for everyone who uses the Internet.

Since the Trump administration hasn’t made it easy to comment on the topic, Oliver bought the website GoFCCYourself.com, which redirects to the correct page at the FCC. He then urged everyone to devote a small amount of effort to the issue.

“Yes, I’m talking to you, everyone who posted ‘May the 4th be with you’ for Star Wars Day this and and every fucking year. And I’m talking to you, everyone who posted on Facebook about 10 concerts you’ve seen and one you didn’t. And to you, everyone who did it ironically and added a clever joke twist because ― and this is important ― you are exactly as bad.”

Oliver has taken on net neutrality before; that time he crashed the FCC’s servers

The Oliver Effect may be happening again. While the FCC’s main page remained online, the page he directed traffic to went down early Monday. The effort also caused #GoFCCYourself to trend on Twitter.

Your Fave Comedians Are Helping To Raise Money To Fight Trump’s Policies

“I’m going to venture a guess: For the past two months, the news out of Washington has left you scowling — and maybe even growling — more than laughing,” Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) president Rhea Suh recently wrote to supporters of the environment-focused non-profit she heads. “Well, we have something that might help.”

Suh just announced the lineup of comedians who will be featured at the group’s April 25 event, “Stand Up! for the Planet: An Evening of Comedy Benefiting NRDC’s Litigation Fund.” This night of comedy will take place in Los Angeles and raise money for legal battles against Donald Trump’s administration concerning his climate change agenda (or lack thereof).

The comedians announced so far are Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Larry David, Martin Short, Tig Notaro, Jerrod Carmichael, JB Smoove, Tony Hale and Pete Davidson.

“I am honored to be a part of such an amazing cause, especially during this critical time for NRDC,” Louis-Dreyfus told the Los Angeles Times. “Now more than ever, it’s important for us to join together and push back against the threats the new administration already poses to decades of environmental progress.”

Comedian Larry David memorably shouted “Trump’s a racist!” during the then-presidential candidate’s opening monologue at “Saturday Night Live” in 2015. He also told The New York Times before the election that thinking about Trump winning the presidency was “like contemplating your own death.”

But as Trump’s presidency is now a reality, the fate of the world may actually need saving by unlikely supergroups such as the NRDC, teamed with a few of Earth’s best comedians. David would certainly be an intriguing Captain Planet.

Justin Trudeau Challenges Matthew Perry To A Rematch Of Elementary School Fight

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau playfully challenged actor Matthew Perry to a fight over Twitter on Saturday, just weeks after Perry let the world know that he once beat Trudeau up at their elementary school in Canada.

During an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” last month, Perry told the story, as extremely unlikely as it might seem.

“My friend Chris Murray, who was also in the fifth grade in Canada, reminded me that we actually beat up Justin Trudeau,” he said. “We both beat him up. I think he was excelling in a sport that we weren’t so it was pure jealousy.”

“I think he was the only kid in school that we could beat up,” he added. “You know, I’m not bragging about this, this is terrible. I was a stupid kid, I didn’t want to beat him up. In fact, I think at one point I tried to turn it into love play.”

Even though Perry expressed remorse, that wasn’t good enough for Trudeau, who in his challenge on Saturday ― which was April Fools’ Day ― correctly noted that Chandler, Perry’s character on “Friends,” has a very punchable face.

Guys, just one request: If this goes down, just make sure it’s streamable ― not some of that pay-per-view bull crap.

Did a Divorce Fight Over Children Lead to Florida Professor’s Execution-Style Slaying?

In the aftermath of a 2012 divorce filing that blindsided him, Florida State University law professor Dan Markel tried to stay amicable with his ex-wife, fellow law professor Wendi Adelson, and focus on their two young sons, his friends say.

“He was annoyed that her family was meddling — he thought — in the divorce,” colleague and law professor Fernando Tesón tells PEOPLE. “But I never sensed he was fearful.”

It turns out he may have had reason to be.

His ongoing conflicts with Adelson over child custody abruptly ended on July 18, 2014, when police answered a 911 call just after 11 a.m. to find him shot point-blank in the head.

Markel was found dead still sitting in his Honda Accord in the garage of his home in suburban Tallahassee, Florida, hours after dropping off his kids at day care.

Police said he was targeted. He died the following day.

• For more on Dan Markel’s mysterious execution-style slaying, subscribe now to PEOPLE or pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday.

Questioned on the day Markel was fatally shot, Adelson “said someone may have done this for her benefit without her knowledge,” Tallahassee police detective Craig Isom testified at a court hearing in December.

“She made the statement that her brother had joked the previous summer about hiring a hit man, but instead decided to buy her a television,” Isom said.

Police pursued that theory — and, in a probable cause affidavit, eventually alleged the motive for Markel’s killing “stemmed from the desperate desire of the Adelson family to relocate Wendi and the children to South Florida.”

Prosecutors have charged three people in what they portray as Markel’s murder-for-hire. Sigfredo Garcia, 34, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. Luis Rivera, 33, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is cooperating with police.

Those men, arrested in the spring of 2016, led police to a third person, 32-year-old Katherine Magbanua, who was arrested in October. Magbanua has two children with Garcia and allegedly had a romantic relationship with Charlie.

Police claim she was the one who connected Charlie to the hit men. She has pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder.

None of the Adelsons have been charged in Markel’s death, and attorneys for Wendi, Charlie and parents Donna and Harvey dismissed any hint of their involvement.

As the investigation continues, Markel’s friends are waiting to see where the case’s questions and answers may lead.

“I just want to have them confirmed,” law professor Douglas A. Berman tells PEOPLE, “so I can feel some comfort.”

Gavin Grimm on Persevering After Supreme Court Drops His Case: ‘This Fight Is Bigger Than Me’

The Supreme Court may have dismissed his court case — as well as the lower court’s previous ruling in his favor — but Gavin Grimm hasn’t given up on the struggle for greater rights for transgender students.

The transgender teen explained why this is just one setback in his crusade for students to use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender identity, a battle he never expected to lead.

“This fight is bigger than me,” Grimm, 17, writes in an op-ed for the New York Times. “I came to realize that very early on, and it is truer now than it ever has been.”

“This fight is for other trans youth in my high school. It is for other trans youth in Virginia. It is for all trans youth who are in school or one day will be. It is for the friends and loved ones of these youth, who want these children to be happy and healthy, rather than at risk and in danger as so many trans people are.”

Now the face of the movement, Grimm initially was just a high school sophomore in Gloucester, Virginia, who was suddenly barred from using the men’s bathroom.

“The school board held a meeting — a public conversation about my genitals and restroom usage — without notifying me first,” Grimm, now a senior, recalls. “My mother and I found out by chance less than 24 hours before the meeting was to happen. An old friend of my mother’s had noticed a post going around Facebook, a rallying cry by adults in my community urging people to show up to the meeting in order to ‘keep that girl out of the boy’s room.’ ”

At that meeting, “people speaking out against me made a point of referring to me with female honorifics and pronouns,” he says. “They warned me that I was going to be raped or otherwise abused. They suggested that boys would sneak into the girls’ room and harm their children.”

VIDEO: This Is How Much It Would Cost to Paint the White House (And More Crazy Facts)

Grimm, with the help of the ACLU, eventually sued the school district and won the right to use the boys’ bathroom at Gloucester High School with Virginia’s Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. But he never had a chance, after the Supreme Court put a stay on the ruling until they could hear arguments on the case — and now the Justices have dismissed the case and cleared the previous ruling.

“Regardless of what obstacles come before me, regardless of what hatred or ignorance or discrimination I face, I will be fine, because I have love on my side,” Grimm writes.

David Beckham and UNICEF Fight Back Over Alleged Hacked Emails: ‘Let the Facts Speak for Themselves’

David Beckham is responding to reports he allegedly used his UNICEF charity work to campaign for a knighthood.

“This story is based on outdated material taken out of context from hacked and doctored private emails from a third party server and gives a deliberately inaccurate picture,” a spokesperson for Beckham tells PEOPLE in a statement.

“David and UNICEF have had a powerful partnership in support of children for over 15 years. The David Beckham 7 Fund specifically has raised millions of pounds and helped millions of vulnerable children around the world,” the statement continued.

Beckham has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2005.

On Friday, British newspaper The Sun published reportedly leaked emails between Beckham and his publicist from 2013 where they discussed the soccer star working on securing a knighthood in 2013. (Beckham was awarded an OBE, or Order of the British Empire, in 2003.) After Beckham allegedly complained that British singer Katherine Jenkins was awarded an OBE and calling it “a f—— joke,” Beckham’s rep urged him to focus his energy on his charitable efforts.

Beckham also allegedly railed against the committee who decides who get the honors, calling them “a bunch of c—-” and saying he “expected nothing less.”

“It’s a disgrace to be honest and if I was American I would of got something like this ten years ago,” Beckham allegedly said.

In February 2015, Beckham launched the 7 Fund to raise funds and awareness for vulnerable children by focusing on seven different countries and seven different initiatives.

“David has given significant time and energy and has made personal financial donations to the 7 Fund and this commitment will continue long term,” the statement added. “Before establishing the 7 Fund, David had supported UNICEF and a number of other charities over many years, including donating his entire earnings from PSG during his time playing there.”

Concluding, “David and UNICEF are rightly proud of what they have and will continue to achieve together and are happy to let the facts speak for themselves.”

RELATED VIDEO: A David Beckham Underwear Ad with a Twist!

On Friday, UNICEF released a statement, defending their partnership with Beckham.

“Some reports relate to alleged private correspondence between our ambassador and other parties, which we have not seen and cannot comment upon,” the statement read. “David Beckham has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2005, and as well as generously giving his time, energy and support to help raise awareness and funds for UNICEF’s work for children, David has given significant funds personally.”

The organization also noted Beckham’s last UNICEF trip in June 2016 when he traveled to Africa to visit children living with HIV, who are receiving support from his charity 7 and UNICEF.

In addition to his reported complaints about not getting a knighthood, the alleged emails also included Beckham’s supposed reluctance to donate his own money to charity and his rep urging the soccer star not to post a photo of his gold-plated laptop on social media so as not to ruin his “man of the people” reputation.

Hippies, Indians, and the Fight for Red Power

Hippies, Indians, and the Fight for Red Power

Through much of the 20th century, federal policy toward Indians sought to extinguish all remnants of native life and culture. That policy was dramatically confronted in the late 1960s when a loose coalition of hippies, civil rights advocates, Black Panthers, unions, Mexican-Americans, Quakers and other Christians, celebrities, and others joined with Red Power activists to fight for Indian rights. In Hippies, Indians and the Fight for Red Power, Sherry Smith offers the first full account of this remarkable story. Hippies were among the first non-Indians of the post-World War II generation to seek contact with Native Americans. The counterculture saw Indians as genuine holdouts against conformity, inherently spiritual, ecological, tribal, communal-the original “long hairs.” Searching for authenticity while trying to achieve social and political justice for minorities, progressives of various stripes and colors were soon drawn to the Indian cause. Black Panthers took part in Pacific Northwest fish-ins. Corky Gonzales’ Mexican American Crusade for Justice provided supplies and support for the Wounded Knee occupation. Actor Marlon Brando and comedian Dick Gregory spoke about the problems Native Americans faced. For their part, Indians understood they could not achieve political change without help. Non-Indians had to be educated and enlisted. Smith shows how Indians found, among this hodge-podge of dissatisfied Americans, willing recruits to their campaign for recognition of treaty rights; realization of tribal power, sovereignty, and self-determination; and protection of reservations as cultural homelands. The coalition was ephemeral but significant, leading to political reforms that strengthened Indian sovereignty. Thoroughly researched and vividly written, this book not only illuminates this transformative historical moment but contributes greatly to our understanding of social movements.
