Fur Supporters Plan to Keep Fighting New York City’s Proposed Ban on Fur Sales

Fur industry advocates plan to continue to turn up the heat on the New York City Council, in response to its proposal for a bill that would ban the sale of fur apparel.
Initially put forward by Council Speaker Corey Johnson and City Council members Mark Levine, Fernando Cabrera, Justin Brannan, Helen Rosenthal and Robert Holden, the proposal has since been moved to the Committee on Consumer Affairs and Business Licensing for further discussion.
If approved, violations would be punished by a civil penalty of no more than $ 500 for the first violation, and no less than $ 500, but no more than $ 1,500 for subsequent violations. Fur apparel sold or offered for sale would be subject to seizure and forfeiture.
Nancy Daigneault, vice president of the Americas for the International Fur Federation, said Friday that a number of furriers and other fur advocates have met with their respective council members and have contacted their offices. “In the last week, furriers have been picking up the phone and calling themselves and meeting with City Council members in their district, or sometimes staff if the members aren’t available,” she said. “We’re hopeful that the city will listen that it’s an ill-conceived ban. It will shut

Moms on a Mission: Fighting Hunger and Teaching Kids to Be Thankful with ‘Turkey on the Table’

California moms April George and Kerry Maunus never dreamed a casual chat would lead them to spark a craze for a must-have Thanksgiving item, create a new holiday tradition – and help fight hunger at the same time.

It all started on an autumn day in 2013 when the new friends who bonded when George moved to the Bay area from Tennessee earlier that summer took a walk after dropping their kids off at school and happily discovered that Thanksgiving is their favorite holiday.

“We were talking about how it’s such a feel-good time when families gather together and how it’s so meaningful to understand how much you have to be thankful for,” says George, 46, who with Maunus, 42, is among PEOPLE’s 25 Women Changing the World.

The conversation turned to the importance of teaching kids to be grateful for what they have and to give back.

But how?

After weeks of brainstorming and online research, the answer came in the form of an adorable knit sweater-clad turkey with a Styrofoam body and attachable feathers for messages of gratitude.

Turkey on the Table, they called it, would look great as a Thanksgiving centerpiece and become a holiday tradition by encouraging those gathered around the table to talk about the very reason for the holiday: giving thanks.

“When we started to do the research on gratitude, we realized it’s not innate to be grateful,” says Maunus, who has three boys. “So the onus is on the family and the community to teach children about being grateful.”

For full coverage of PEOPLE’s 25 Women Changing the World, pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday

They also wanted to make sure a portion of the proceeds from the sales of the $ 39.99 turkey provide meals for those in need.

“We’re happy that this is bringing awareness to hunger in America,” says Maunus. “One in 8 people are food insecure, including single moms and people with jobs. Everyone should have access to food in this country.”

Instant Mompreneurs

Armed with a promising idea, the two stay-at-home moms had no clue how to get their idea from laptop to tabletop.

“We were two moms with zero experience in manufacturing and product design, but we thought this idea was too good not to do something with,” says George, who has two girls.

They made it work. “We learned to become very scrappy and figure things out, face challenges and work through them,” says Maunus, “We learned along the way.”

They found a factory in China to manufacture the turkeys and an artist to illustrate the tiny book Maunus wrote that comes with each one.

Before they knew it, “It became a full-time job,” says Maunus.

Two years later, in the fall of 2015, they were ready to sell their first batch.

“Initially we ordered 5,000 turkeys and friends said, ‘Girl, that’s a little aggressive. I don’t think you understand how many 5,000 is,’” says George. “But we were comfortable with that number.”

They threw a launch party to benefit their local food bank, donating a portion of proceeds from the fete to the charity – and told the people who came to spread the word.

“People bought them,” says Maunus. “Then, through the magic of Facebook and Instagram, word caught on quickly in Massachusetts and Indiana. That’s how we ended up with a handful of retailers.

“We sold out the Monday before Thanksgiving. We realized we were onto something.”

So were others.

The hunger relief organization Feeding America learned what the two moms were doing and offered to partner with them.

“We were shocked,” says George. “Partnering with Feeding America was the biggest miracle out of the sky.”

A New Reason to Give Thanks

Today, Turkey on the Table is sold online and in more than 1,500 retailers nationwide.

For each turkey sold, 10 meals are provided to people in need. To date, Turkey on the Table has provided 862,022 meals.

“Our goal is to reach the 1 million mark in 2018,” says Maunus.

They’re thrilled that Turkey on the Table is doing more than just helping to feed people.

“We’ve gotten letters from people saying thank you for helping us to create conversations about gratitude around our table,” says Maunus. “Knowing how many people we’ve helped keeps us going.”

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

Julia Roberts Stands Behind Student Fighting for LGBTQ Rights Under Trump: ‘I Want All Students to Feel Safe’

As a transgender student leader in the conservative town of St. Joseph’s, Missouri, Miguel Johnson has witnessed firsthand the dramatic impact Donald Trump‘s presidency has had not just on his high school, but on the attitude of the entire town.

Just weeks before the election, Johnson, a GLSEN student ambassador, spoke onstage alongside Julia Roberts at the GLSEN Respect Awards, an event benefitting the national organization that works to keep schools safe for LGBTQ youth. Even among his brave young co-presenters, 16-year-old Johnson stood out.

“I had the pleasure of presenting with Miguel at last year’s GLSEN Respect Awards, and Miguel, like all the students I meet there, is smart, kind and incredibly brave to live their life openly and honestly at such a young age,” Roberts said in a statement to PEOPLE. “As a parent, I want all students to feel safe and protected at school, and I stand with Miguel and trans students across the country. You are loved.”

At the time, Johnson was cautiously optimistic about the upcoming election, which for the first time in history featured a Republican candidate who had openly acknowledged the LGTQ community. Trump even suggested Caitlyn Jenner would be welcome to use the bathroom of her choosing at Trump Tower.

“Before Trump got elected, he always said he was totally for LGBTQ students, because they’re people too and they deserve an education,” Johnson tells PEOPLE. “And then after he got elected, he was basically like, ‘Just kidding, I lied.’ “

On Feb. 22, President Trump overruled his own education secretary Betsy DeVos to rescind Obama-era protections for transgender students that had allowed them to use bathrooms corresponding with their gender identity. Instead, the Trump administration argued it should be up to the states and local school districts to establish “educational policy.”

Some states, like Johnson’s native Missouri, are already working to pass laws that would force students to use restrooms not based on the gender they identify with, but on the gender that appears on their birth certificates. “Since the recession of the transgender-inclusive Title IX guidance and introduction of two anti-trans state bills (HB202 & SB98) in Missouri, Miguel’s school has become less supportive and is now signaling potential roadblocks ahead,” GLSEN Director of Communications Chris Tuttle tells PEOPLE.

Johnson blames Trump’s flip-flopping on LGBTQ issues with changing the atmosphere of acceptance in his small town. “The feeling went from, ‘Trump is supporting LGBTQ students, so I should too,’ to ‘Well, if he doesn’t care, I don’t need to either.’ “

RELATED: Gavin Grimm Says the Battle Over Bathroom Use “Should Never Have Happened”

Dylan, another trans student at Johnson’s school, who asked that his last name remain anonymous, has noticed the same changes. “Once Trump became a candidate, my friends in the LGBTQ community heard more negative things being said about them openly. They’ve been threatened more, not only for how they identify, but also their race and even their religion.”

Dylan has also noticed that students seem to be more comfortable using offensive language in casual conversation. “I’ve heard more of it, not just directed towards my friends and me, but also just used in casual conservations, as if it were perfectly fine. Like if a person does something awkward in class, someone might say, ‘That’s so gay.’ “

Overall, hate crimes in nine U.S. metropolitan areas rose more than 20% last year, spurred by the heated emotions that arose during the presidential campaign, leading crimes researcher Brian Levin recently told NBC News. Crimes against Muslims and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people accounted for much of the hate crime growth, the researcher found. Many more cases, especially in small conservative towns like Miguel and Dylan’s, go unreported.

Trump’s rhetoric on issues like race, religion and national origin, could have influenced the number of incidents, as well as the number of incident reports, says Levin. “That, coupled with significant coverage, might have encouraged two things to happen: Individuals who vary in motivation, from hardcore bigots to those just seeking a thrill, seeking something to do, as well as victims who felt that they should report this because they’re not alone,” he adds.

Moving forward, Johnson says, “I’m still trying to figure out what I can do to feel okay and how to make my friends and fellow students feel okay, and honestly I don’t have an answer. There’s not an easy solution, especially when the person with the most power is messing stuff up. “

In the meantime, Johnson is doing what he can to encourage fellow LGBTQ students to speak up. “The more voices, the more heard,” he explains. Sadly, Johnson says he knows many students who were “just starting to be comfortable enough to come out in school,” but have “started to back down” since the election. Dylan has noticed the same pattern.

“So I’ve really just been encouraging them not to do that, because it’s the same as us going back in time,” Miguel says. “We need to be progressive. People don’t realize that these things affect people they know and care about. So I’m hoping that the more people come out and speak up, the more people will start realize this affects them too.”

Gina de Givenchy Launches Geeg Specializing in Headwear for Women Fighting Disease

WELL-COVERED: As a cancer survivor, Gina de Givenchy knows firsthand the complex emotions that women face while fighting disease.
Her new e-commerce business, Geeg, specializes in head coverings made of shirting material, turbans and other specialty items designed to help lift the spirits of the unwell.
After having a double mastectomy and starting treatment for breast cancer in 2013, the former fashion executive said she struggled to find any headwear that was “relatable” to her. Starting to think about going back to work, de Givenchy said. “I really wanted to start my own business. It really was like a bolt of lightning, after searching the Internet. It’s not really something that you’re walking the streets for. There was nothing that was really designer and luxury. And there was no real retail shopping for the cancer patient.”
That realization was “really strange” for de Givenchy who had always been connected to the fashion industry through her posts at Richard Tyler, Chanel and Jil Sander. She explained, “I sort of felt like the same person even though I didn’t look like same person. I just felt sort of shortchanged.”
Recalling her own purchases, she said, “What it really comes down to is I needed something that

Wireless carriers are fighting for your cash, and that’s good news

Wireless carriers are fighting for your cash, and that’s good newsOver the past week, the four big US wireless carriers have made two things clear: They’re easily spooked, and competition works. From Feb. 12 through Feb. 17, a cascading series of rate cuts and service-plan liberalizations have seen the price of unlimited data plans tumble from a high of infinity to, at worst, $ 100. The pricing battle started when Verizon (VZ) made a surprise announcement on Feb. 12 saying the company would start selling unlimited data plans for $ 80 for a single line without the kind of video streaming and hotspot limits T-Mobile (TMUS) imposed on its $ 70 unlimited plan.

The Culture of Digital Fighting Games

The Culture of Digital Fighting Games

This book examines the complex network of influences that collide in the culture of digital fighting games. Players from all over the world engage in competitive combat with one another, forming communities in both real and virtual spaces, attending tournaments and battling online via internet-connected home game consoles. But what is the logic behind their shared playstyle and culture? What are the threads that tie them together, and how does this inform our understanding of competitive gaming, community, and identity? Informed by observations made at one of the biggest fighting game events in the world – the Evolution Series tournament, or “EVO” – and interviews with fighting game players themselves, this book covers everything from the influence of arcade spaces, to the place of gender and ethnicity in the community, to the clash of philosophies over how these games should be played in the first place. In the process, it establishes the role of technology, gameplay, and community in how these players define both themselves and the games that they play.

Goals Worth Fighting For

At a time when many of us are wondering what the future holds for the arts, it brings me great pleasure to stop and recognize elected leaders who already do extraordinary work to champion the arts.

Last week, Americans for the Arts and The U.S. Conference of Mayors celebrated two elected leaders–Martin Walsh, mayor of Boston, and Satish Hiremath, mayor of Oro Valley, Arizona–who have demonstrated immense dedication to the development of arts programming within their communities, and have enriched the lives of citizens of all ages and backgrounds through a variety of cultural initiatives.

The day after we celebrated these leaders, Donald Trump was sworn in as 45th President of the United States. Uncertainty remains–in the questions we helped develop for the Washington Post during the presidential campaign, he was positive about the value of the arts but deferred to Congress on supporting increased federal funding of the National Endowment for the Arts and other federal funding for culture in general. He also deferred to state and local school districts on maintaining or increasing support for arts education funding. While he does express appreciation for arts education and the arts in his own life, and said he will be an advocate, specific policy positions have so far remained unknown or undeveloped.

We also now know that some of President Trump’s transition team advisors are recommending elimination of federal arts and humanities funding and privatizing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting along with many other non-arts related cuts. The arguments are old and tired and fly in the face of some of the very things our new President wants like building new infrastructure, jobs, a stronger economy–all areas where the arts are proven allies. As we wait for more clarity, Americans for the Arts will continue to celebrate those who are making a difference. We will work with arts advocates across the country–community leaders, elected officials, artists and arts professionals, educators, business leaders and more–toward goals that could strengthen our country through the arts such as the following:

1. Every person in the United States deserves to have access to the broad range of arts in his or her life. The way to do that is increase federal funding for the arts to $ 1 per capita for a more creative America;

2. Every child in the United States deserves to have access to every art form, grades K-12. The way to do that is fully fund and implement the Well-Rounded Education provisions of the Every Student Succeeds Act to close gaps in access to arts education for all students;

3. Our country needs to be competitive and the arts provide a great opportunity for economic development, including tourism and support for small arts businesses run by entrepreneurs. One way to get there is by establishing a cabinet-level position to advise President Trump on the $ 704 billion arts and culture economy;

4. The creation of millions of jobs would be helped by boosting economic and community development programs, like those proposed in Senator Tom Udall’s CREATE Act, which promote the role of the arts in serving the American public through federal agencies such as the Small Business Administration, Rural Development Administration, FEMA disaster recovery centers–to name just a few. The job numbers speak loudly: the nation’s arts and culture sector employed 4.7 million wage and salary workers in 2013, with a total compensation of $ 339 billion;

5. Our military service members and veterans deserve to be fully supported during and after valiantly serving our country. Two ways to do that are to support the arts as they are integrated into health and wellness programs, which has shown much success in the past, and to increase access to arts therapists and artist-directed programs to help provide a pathway for re-entry and re-integration of our service members and veterans into the workforce. The NEA’s Creative Forces program is a shining example of this work;

6. Preserve or expand charitable tax deduction incentives;

7. Support creative youth development by strengthening community-based organizations working in youth development and the arts; and

8. Promote cultural exchange programs that advance diplomatic objectives and cultural cooperation through the exchange of art and other aspects of culture among nations.

As President Trump settles into the White House, Americans for the Arts and arts advocates across the country (including 300,000 members of the Arts Action Fund) will remain engaged with his administration and urge them to advance pro-arts policies that will impact and improve our society and communities. While we make our voices heard, you, the artist and arts advocate, can take advantage of advocacy opportunities. Seek out, and support arts advocacy organizations. Partner with trusted allies, and share your information with elected leaders at every level. We all have a role to play.

J.K. Rowling’s Election Night Tweets Remind Us To Keep Fighting

J.K. Rowling ― along with other established writers who are vocal on social media ― seemed to have trouble processing the results of Tuesday’s presidential election.

The author took to Twitter, making jokes about America’s nominated president elect, Donald Trump. “He has the deepest thoughts,” she wrote. “So deep you’ll need a big shovel to get at ‘em. Bigly deep.”

But, perhaps detecting that her readers needed not humor but hope ― or at least license to grieve ― she added a few sincere tweets to her election night commentary. “The easy thing is to be silenced because you don’t want the insults,” she tweeted. “The easy thing is to look the other way when it’s happening to others.”

These aren’t platitudes, but calls to action in response to the election of Donald Trump. Rowling embedded and responded to tweets from her harassers, demonstrating her belief in the power of speech. “We challenge bigots,” she tweeted. “We don’t let hate speech become normalised.”

6 Rules For Fighting With Your Spouse

SPECIAL FROM Grandparents.com

If you think avoiding arguments is the key to a happy marriage, most experts would say you’re wrong. “I actually don’t believe in avoiding conflict,” says Dr. Wendy Walsh, author of “The 30-Day Love Detox” and host of Discovery Network’s “Happily NEVER After”. “I’m all about how to make healthy repair. Anger happens, and people who love each other bark sometimes, but they also have wonderful make-up behaviors. Sometimes, little conflict means little intimacy.”

Dr. Terri Orbach, Ph.D., project manager of a NIH-funded long-term study on marriage, agrees. Her study, which has followed a group of couples for 28 years, has found that the couples who don’t have disagreements have not fared as well in marriage. “Four couples in the study that said they never had disagreements in year one, were no longer together in year three,” Dr. Orbach says. “One of the things I tell married couples is that marital spats, conflict, disagreements, are typical. It’s how you communicate and resolve them that’s important.”

So what’s the best way to have an argument? Follow these expert tips.

1. Time it right. “Try not to bring up touchy subjects when you are in a HALT mode (Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired),” says Dr. Walsh. Though most couples tend to bring up important topics right before bed, don’t. Instead pick a time when you are both well-rested and not under a time constraint or stress.

2. Use “I” statements not “you” statements. When arguing with your spouse, talk about how you feel as in, “I feel overwhelmed when I have so much to do around the house,” as opposed to pointing fingers at your spouse with statements like, “You never help around the house.” “You” statements make your spouse feel attacked and shut down the lines of communication, while “I” statements are less threatening and keep the dialogue going.

3. Go to bed angry. “As time passes in a relationship, you understand that you will figure it out tomorrow,” says Dr. Orbach, who’s known as The Love Doctor. “Whatever you were arguing about isn’t the be-all end-all.” Staying up all night to sort something out just doesn’t work.”When you’re irritated and upset your brain waves change and you’re not as rational and able to process things. It takes at least 30 minutes for brainwaves to go back to normal according to brain research,” she says. The overnight gives you perspective and allows you to calm down and remember how to fight fair. So go to bed mad, and talk about it tomorrow.

4. Apologize. When a marriage is just starting out disagreements can seem like marriage breakers—both of you are fighting for turf. “But over time, as you’ve been together longer, you have a bigger picture which is a long-term focus,” says Dr. Orbach. “Winning and being right is less important to who we are.” If you’ve done something hurtful to your partner or behaved in a way that was unkind, own up to it. And when apologizing, stay away from “Yes, but” statements, as in “Yes, I was wrong, but you’re to blame, too.” “Using ‘but’ takes away from the sincerity of the apology,” Dr. Orbach says. Instead, take full responsibility and focus on your own actions.

5. Watch your stress level. One way to not make spats as intense or last as long is to lower your stress. “When we are stressed, things bother us more and accumulate more,” says Dr. Orbach. “That means we’re going to fight more and the fight will be more intense.” Pay attention to your own stress levels, and lower your stress by exercising, deep breathing, yoga or other techniques that calm you.

6. Diffuse with humor. Humor can cut the tension and make it more difficult to argue or stay mad at each other. “The key is knowing your partner’s sensitivities and making sure that you’re not making it worse with the kind of humor you’re using,” says Dr. Orbach. If you have humor topics or words that make both of you laugh, go for it. Otherwise, if you’re not sure how it will go over, sidestep it, since it could make it worse.

A-Sides With Jon Chattman: Counting (on) Stars; May Edition of 5 for Fighting With… Five for Fighting

Decades after its release, people still question if Alanis Morrisette misused the word “Ironic” in her hit song. I still don’t care. Speaking of irony, fellow Canadians Stars dropped an album last fall, their seventh, called No One is Lost, which wreaks of irony. Like their previous efforts, the latest album from the Canucks I’ve loved since their first record in 2000 (is the term Canuck OK to say?) is a slice of emotive, sometimes dark, but always synth pop.

A-Sides had the good fortune of interviewing the band at their recent Webster Hall show, where they took part in a laid back interview and performed a pair of tracks, one of which, comes off their 2010 effort The Five Ghosts, which I consider their best. But then again, who am I? Certainly not Jean Valjean. Anyway, watch on, and enjoy Stars. Filmed by Shoot Me Peter.

“This is the Last Time”

“Dead Hearts”

For StarsA-Sides interview, go to there.

Five for Fighting
has little to do with the band Stars so I won’t attempt a segue. I will, however, say this: there’s no doubt singer/songwriter/sports fanatic John “FFF” John Ondrasik appreciates the Youppi namedrop I did in my line of questioning above this sentence (if you clicked on the interview link.) Anyway, as Ondrasik has done for several months now, he sat down with me – in the digital realm anyway – and answered five silly questions for this column within a column I like to call 5 for Fighting with…Five for Fighting. So, sit back and relax, and read this irreverently irrelevant interview!

You’ve had such a long career and it continues to blossom (it’s spring so that word is a nice touch by the way). If you ever sat down to write an autobiography about your life. What would the title be, and who would write the foreword?
The title would be “Michael Jordan — My Life” I’ve always been one for creative marketing and would like to sell more than 12 books. (You can write the foreward as I hear you excel at bio’s)

Thanks for the plug! I did write your bio on your website. Off topic, one of your songs from yesteryear was called “Easy Tonight.” Was that about your college years? Zing. Burn. Ugh.
No, that song was “Summa Cum Laude”. Why do all my songs have EASY in the lyric? EASY Tonight, Superman (It’s not EASY), EASY Like Sunday Morning, EASY Lover, It’s so EASY to fall in love, Take it EASY, Peaceful EASY Feeling…Are you not impressed? Eazy E got nothing on me.

Notice how I left “EASY” in all caps? That’s how I roll. Anyway, why does Cinco de Mayo always fall on May 5th?
What is this? A beauty pageant?

Indeed. Bookends came out in 2013. Get with it man — let’s get another album together. If you need help, I can play air triangle.
OMG…Either you are trolling me or butchered my title. It’s Bookmarks buddy…and for that slight I’m tripling my monthly fee for B-Sides.

I love bookmarks, and clearly have Simon & Garfunkel on my mind. Lastly, my birthday is this month. What are you going to get me? Will it be the same thing you got me last year?

Another Daenerys Targaryen inflatable love doll on it’s way.

A-Sides “Delve Into Twelve” Countdown
Each week A-Sides unleashes its top 12 tracks of the week AKA the “Delve Into Twelve” based on the following contributing factors: songs I’m playing out that particular week no matter when they were released (think overlooked songs, unreleased tracks and old favorites), songs various publicists are trying to get me to listen to that I did and dug a bunch, posts and trends I’ve noticed on my friends’ Facebook walls and, most importantly: what my toddler is currently enjoying thoroughly with an assist from my newborn.

This informal series focuses on the artist making art in a low-threatening, extremely informal (sometime humorous) way. No bells, no whistles, just the music performed in a random, low-key setting followed by an unrehearsed chat. In an industry where everything often gets overblown and overmanufactured, Jon strives for a refreshing change. Artists have included fun., Charli XCX, Imagine Dragons, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, Gary Clark Jr., American Authors, Echosmith, and many, many more!

Fighting Poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa: the Multiple Roles of Legumes in Integrated Soil Fertility Management

Fighting Poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa: the Multiple Roles of Legumes in Integrated Soil Fertility Management

Legumes play an important role in the cropping systems of sub Saharan Africa (SSA). Legumes are an important source of nutrition to both humans and livestock by providing the much needed protein, minerals, fibre and vitamins. The sale of legumes seed, leaves and fibre generates income for the marginalized communities especially women. Cultivation of legumes is essential for the regeneration of nutrient-deficient soils. By biologically fixing nitrogen (BNF) in the soil, legumes provide a relatively low-cost method of replacing otherwise expensive inorganic nitrogen in the soil. This enhances soil fertility and boosts subsequent cereal crop yields. Production of legumes in SSA is however; hampered by a number of constraints among them low and declining soil fertility, low soil pH, high salinity, drought and flooding, poor access to improved germplasm, diseases, pests and weeds. Farmers need to learn how to overcome these constraints if the full benefits of legumes are to be gained. This book presents a synthesis of research work on legumes and draws attention to the importance of legumes in integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) and poverty alleviation in SSA.

The Amazing Way This Hospital Is Fighting Physician Burnout

Hospitals have procedures and alerts in place to deal with practically anything that could possibly go wrong: “Code Red” for fire, “code blue” for medical emergencies, and “code white” for behavioral disturbances, to name a few. But the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio has introduced a new alert, “Code Lavender,” for a more unlikely and much more common threat: stress and burnout.

Code Lavender — which has also been employed at North Hawaii Community Hospital in Waimea — is a “holistic care rapid response” serving patients and physicians in need of intensive emotional or spiritual support, according to Amy Greene, director of spiritual care at Cleveland Clinic.

“It was an idea to indicate that we were going to respond as quickly as possible to a need for intensive emotional and spiritual support,” Greene tells The Huffington Post. “We thought originally that it would be for patients and their family members, but as it turned out, we started doing them mostly for staff.”

The Clinic is consistently ranked among the best hospitals in the world, and as such, it houses some of the sickest patients, including both children and adults, in the country and beyond.

The Code Lavender program, which has been in place since 2008, aims to support nurses and physicians during emotionally troubling or exhausting times, often after experiencing the death of one or several patients.

“[Cleveland Clinic] caregivers are used to seeing really difficult cases, but even they are going to buckle when they get hit two or three times in one day,” Greene says. “Code Lavender is a holistic team approach to going up and saying, ‘Hey, we’ve got your back.'”

Within 30 minutes of a call, the Clinic’s team of holistic nurses arrives at the unit in need to provide Reiki and massage, healthy snacks and water, and lavender arm bands to remind the nurse or physician to take it easy for the rest of the day.

“I love the whole concept of Code Lavender. It makes us feel appreciated and valued,” one nurse wrote in a Cleveland Clinic survey, while another noted, “It is helpful because it’s nice to get your stress out. It’s also good to know that our workplace feels our pain and is willing to be there for us.”

The Healing Services Team employs holistic methods that include spiritual support, counseling and therapeutic massage. Bringing together conventional medicine and alternative remedies, the Clinic also offers employees yoga classes, weight loss programs and mindfulness training.

The Cleveland Clinic is a one of a growing number of health care facilities integrating holistic healing into their services. A 2011 American Hospital Association report found that 42 percent of surveyed hospitals offer one or more Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies — including acupuncture, homeotherapy and herbal medicine — increasing from 37 percent in 2007, and 26 percent in 2005.

The Code Lavender program is just one of a growing number being created to address burnout among physicians and health care providers. One 2012 national study found that nearly half of all physicians experience burnout, more than any other type of U.S. workers. Emergency care, critical care, and family medicine workers experience the highest rates of burnout among health care providers.

Recent research has found that mindfulness training may be effective in not only reducing burnout, but also in boosting compassion among physicians. University of Virginia research from 2012 also found that mindfulness-based stress reduction courses to significantly improve burnout and well-being scores for various types of healthcare providers. And according to a small, recent study published in the Annals of Family Medicine, mindfulness training programs help physicians to feel better connected to their patients.

“[Compassion-based care] does go against an old style of medicine where it was just, ‘Go go go, stay tough, don’t be impacted by it, keep moving,'” says Greene. “We’re seeing that this is long-term not sustainable. Doctors and nurses are human beings.”
