Cuban Catwalk! Chanel Hosts First-Ever Fashion Show in Cuba

Chanel Cruise runway shows take the Parisian-based brand all over the world. Last year the company traveled to Seoul, South Korea and now the team is venturing to Havana, Cuba for its 2017 resort collection, bringing a fresh, fashionable spirit to the country’s newly-opened borders.

Turning Paseo de Prado, the dividing line between Old and New Havana, into a private runway, according to Voguea few of Karl’s favorite models such as Stella Tennant, Mariacarla Boscono, Lindsey Wixson, Soo Joo Park, and Kendall Jenner, all took to the catwalk showing off vibrant, patterned fashions as well as toned-down black and white styles that channeled the spirit of Cuba as the French fashion house presented its Cruise 2017 collection on Tuesday night.

Before the show, guest were given a cultural tour of the city with pitstops at places like Earnest Hemingway’s house and an exhibition of Lagerfeld’s photography held at the Factoria Havana, before being driven to the show courtesy of a fleet of 170 rainbow-hued vintage convertibles.

To support the show, Chanel has attracted many famous fashion faces to the formerly-isolated island, including Gisele Bündchen, model Stella Tennan and CR Fashion Book‘s Carine Roitfeld. Interestingly, Lagerfeld presented his line wearing a jacket designed by Hedi Slimane, who it’s rumored is being groomed as his heir, from Saint Laurent’s Spring 2016 Men’s collection.

For the show’s grand finale a troop of drummers moved through the streets, turning the catwalk into a giant dance party. Models invited fashion show attendees to join them in the festivities as the locals watched on from the balconies of their houses lining the street. Chanel’s guests were then invited to party late into the night and join Karl himself for a tango or two.

Kendall and Kylie Jenner Step Up Their Fashion Game With Their First-Ever Collection

kendall-kylie-jenner

Just when you thought they’d done it all (and they’re still teenagers, mind you), Kendall and Kylie Jenner shared some big fashion news today: They’re launching their first-ever standalone clothing and shoe collection.

While the style-setting, Instagram-record-breaking, Balmain-campaign-starring sisters have dabbled in fashion design before, guest designing collections for Topshop and Pacsun, this is their first foray into designing their own line, aptly named Kendall + Kylie. WWD broke the news today and spoke with the Jenners about the contemporary apparel and shoe collection, which will bow at retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Shopbop, and Nordstrom in spring 2016.

“This is all us. It’s enjoyable to be able to fully create,” Kendall told WWD. “It’s a lot different from our Topshop and PacSun collections because those were both collaborations, so they obviously had a say in everything…. One main thing that we wanted to cover was to make sure that it was affordable and still beautiful.”

Everything in the collection will retail for under $ 250, with prices starting at approximately $ 65 for a top.

“I feel like we’ve both really evolved our styles, and this represents what we want to wear,” said Kylie, who cited Alexander Wang and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen as inspirations. The Olsens are interesting and fitting inspiration to the Jenner girls, who seem staunch in their commitment to being fashion designers. Similarly, the Olsens launched their contemporary line, Elizabeth & James in 2007, prior to the wildly successful launch of their ready-to-wear brand, The Row, a year earlier. Could the Jenners be on the road to winning fashion’s Oscar, a CFDA award, like the Olsens did this year?

“Designing is something that we’ve always wanted to do, and I think it’s really cool to kind of step back and put the looks together and be a part of the shoot when it’s a different model modeling it and actually being the creative person behind it,” said Kendall.

One thing the girls are firm on: They don’t want their sisters Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe Kardashian to offer their opinions on the collection, which includes dresses with elegant halter twist necklines, cutouts, and fluid silk pants. “We don’t want their opinion on it because we want it to be very ‘us.’ We don’t show them anything until it’s done and out,” Kendall told WWD sister publication Footwear News. “We all have similar styles but different tastes.”

America’s Best Muslim Comedians To Star In First-Ever Muslim Funny Fest

What do Muslims in America have to laugh about?

Quite a lot, say the organizers of New York City’s — and possibly America’s — first-ever Muslim stand-up comedy festival.

The Muslim Funny Fest, slated to take place between July 21 and 23, will bring 14 Muslim entertainers together for a bit of comic relief.

Dean Obeidallah and Maysoon Zayid, the two comedians co-producing the event, have been putting together the New York Arab American Comedy Festival for the past 11 years. But this year, they felt it was important to rally around the shared experience of growing up Muslim in America, and use comedy to process that experience.

“Even though all the comedians are Muslims, we all have very different experiences, whether it is the culture we grew up in or the extent to which we practice our faith,” Zayid told The Huffington Post. “The common link that, sadly, brings us together is the bigotry and hatred we are currently experiencing as American Muslims, and I am hoping that the Muslim Funny Fest will do something to dilute that hate.”

American attitudes toward Muslims have taken a turn for the worse in recent years.

In 2010, close to half of Muslim-Americans said they’d experienced some form of personal racial or religious discrimination. And Muslims are viewed more coldly than any other major religious group in the country, according to a 2014 Pew Research Center poll.

“The United States is scared of two things: black people and Muslims,” comedian Preacher Moss says in a trailer for the fest. “I’ve got the best of both worlds.”

The festival will feature stars like Negin Farsad, a producer, actor and social justice activist, “Mo” Amer, who was part of the comedy tour “Allah Made Me Funny,” and Azhar Usman, a former attorney who has performed stand-up on five continents.

Obeidallah said that one of his biggest hopes for the festival is that the audience is diverse and that it includes non-Muslims of many faiths and backgrounds.

“We felt really strongly the need to show people that Muslims can be funny, that we have a sense of humor, and most importantly, that we can laugh at ourselves,” he said.
