How Stranger Things Is One Big Game of Dungeons & Dragons

It’s no secret that Dungeons & Dragons plays a huge role in Netflix’s Stranger Things. From the very first game we see the young friends playing together in Season 1, to Will’s efforts to keep the campaign going with his friends in the show’s third season, and even to an official tie-in Stranger Things D&D Starter Set, the game is an integral part of the show and its characters. But did you know beyond the shots of the famous red game box and obvious monster references, there’s a lot more D&D in Stranger Things than you probably realized?

As much as Will pleads with his friends to play D&D in Season 3, he never realizes that he actually is in a campaign—in real life. The friends’ heroics to defeat the monster and save the village goes far beyond the tabletop as references, parallels, and homages make this season a huge, terrifying game of D&D. Roll an arcana check as we dive into just some of them.

Game of Thrones: George R.R. Martin Debunks ‘Absurd’ Book Rumor

George R.R. Martin has shot down a suggestion that he has completed the final two books in the Song of Ice and Fire saga and has been withholding them until HBO’s Game of Thrones concludes.

According to Entertainment Weekly, several media reports have quoted actor Ian McElhinney, who played Ser Berristan Selmy in Game of Thrones up until season 5 in 2015, talking at a fan convention about the as-yet-unreleased books. “George has already written Books 6 and 7, and as far as he’s concerned there only are seven books,” he allegedly said. “But he struck an agreement with David and Dan, the showrunners on the series, that he would not publish the final two books until the series has completed.”

There are lots of choices, but most of them have a 7-day free trial before you fully commit. You could even watch every single episode, from beginning to Game of Thrones season 8, but you’d also need to either not go to work or school, or just skip out on sleeping.

Code Vein is the Anime Vampire Game of Your Dreams

It’s been easy to point out comparisons between Code Vein’s combat and sense of style and that of developer From Software’s action-RPGs since its 2017 reveal. Now that I’ve played through Code Vein’s first hour and seen bits of its story begin to unfold, I’m starting to understand just how much Bandai Namco’s new spin on the genre is deviating from the norm.

Rather than obfuscate its own story by hiding nuggets of lore in item descriptions, Code Vein is happy to lay things out in extended cutscenes and conversations. That’s not to say there are no mysteries to uncover – plenty of anime-inspired characters I spoke to kept things pretty vague and left me with a lot more questions than answers at the end of my session.

Borderlands: Game of The Year Edition Review

With its distinctive hand-drawn cartoon art style, Borderlands is an odd candidate for a remaster because it’s look is frankly hard to improve upon. It looked great in 2009, and it still looks great nearly 10 years later as a slightly brighter experience with better, steadier framerate and a few minor tweaks. That’s both good and somewhat disappointing: On the one hand, it reconfirms that Borderlands still looks and plays the part a decade later. On the other, it means there’s little reason to return if you’ve already completed the first adventure on Pandora.

Those with keen eyes may be able to see a difference, but switching between Ultra and High settings on PC seemed like a wash to me. There’s unfortunately no HDR support here, but the console versions will have it (we haven’t gotten our hands on those yet), along with 4K on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. That might add vibrancy to the environments, structures, characters, and weapons, but the graphical style didn’t necessarily need a refresh anyway. Consoles do benefit from 60fps gameplay, though, and the PC version is a free upgrade for owners of the original.

SteamWorld Quest Is a Card Game RPG as Fiendish as It Is Lovely

There’s something inherently likeable about the SteamWorld series. Its hand-drawn sprites, or sheer commitment to cheeriness or unerring focus on a single, tight, mechanical design stretched to game length – one or all of these will tug a smile from players’ cold hearts eventually, no matter the game. The side-effect is that the whole SteamWorld brand has given developer Image & Form the enviable opportunity to consistently try new things, while still attracting a captive audience.

2013’s breakout Steamworld Dig, don’t forget, was the second game to bear the moniker, swapping the DSiWare original’s Tower Defence for procedurally generated platforming. Then we got Heist, which somehow wrestled the XCOM model into two dimensions, and added a weird fascination with collectible hats. Even Dig 2, the series’ first full sequel, made major changes, swapping those procedural maps for a meticulously designed experience, now prizing skilled play over the original’s material grinding.
