How Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Builds Off Pokemon Go

I’ve accepted that I’ll never go to Hogwarts. That letter must have gotten delivered to the wrong house, and even if it found its way to me, a 27-year-old jumping into a first-year Potions class might look a little silly. And yet I’ve craved for the wizarding world to seep into my muggle life.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, from the developers of Pokemon Go and set for a 2019 release, aims to do just that. It’s an experience not nearly as immediately sellable as Pokemon Go’s catch-and-collect loop, I loved the potential for this new AR adventure to deliver an engaging, daily dose of magic after spending an hour freeing hippogriffs and dueling dark wizards.

I’ll admit, before learning about Wizards Unite, I remained skeptical of how Niantic’s location-based gameplay could be adapted to a Harry Potter experience, much less one tapping into my fan fiction dreams of living in the wizarding world. But, Niantic and WB Games San Francisco’s initial hook is an interesting one — a great Calamity threatens to break the Statute of Secrecy that keeps the wizarding and muggle worlds separate. Objects, people, creatures, and even memories have been displaced from time and space, trapped and potentially about to break that world-separating seal en masse.

Harry Winston Splashes Record $50.4 Million on Pink Diamond

THINK PINK: Five minutes of spirited bidding. That’s all it took for the newly named Winston Pink Legacy to go under the hammer for 50.4 million Swiss francs, or $ 50 million, on Tuesday at the Christie’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels sale, setting a world record for the price paid per carat for a pink diamond at auction.
Harry Winston was behind the winning bid. The stone will enter the brand’s legacy collection, which began with the acquisition of the 101-carat, D flawless, Winston Legacy diamond at Christie’s in 2013, Swatch Group chairwoman and Harry Winston chief executive officer Nayla Hayek said in a statement.
The Winston Pink Legacy, a fancy vivid pink rectangular-cut diamond of 18.96 carats representing the most expensive pink diamond ever sold at Christie’s, hailed from the collection of former De Beers owner, the Oppenheimer family.
More than 30,000 people visited the auction house’s sale previews in London, Hong Kong and New York to get a glimpse of the stone. “This exceptional diamond captured the imagination of international collectors across the globe,” said Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s International head of jewelry.
Also commenting on the sale, Eddie LeVian, ceo of jeweler Le Vian, a specialist in chocolate diamonds sourced from the same soon-to-close

Meghan Markle Reveals the Secret Way Her Wedding Veil Honored Her First Date with Prince Harry

It doesn’t get more romantic than this.

In a sneak peek from the upcoming HBO documentary Queen of the World, Meghan Markle opens up about the secret tribute to her first date with Prince Harry hidden within her spectacular 16-foot wedding veil.

While getting a chance to see her dress for the first time after tying the knot in May, Meghan, 37, reveals the special significance behind a “piece of blue fabric” stitched inside.

“Somewhere in here there’s a piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside — it was my something blue,” Meghan remarks while inspecting the veil in the video above.

Sweetly, she adds, “It’s fabric from the dress that I wore on our first date.”

Of course, the cathedral-length veil also represented a special connection to the Commonwealth.

The bride’s headpiece, made from silk tulle, featured a trim of hand-embroidered flowers from each of the 53 counties in the Commonwealth, the family of nations linked to the U.K., in threads and organza.

“I’m really over the moon to find out that I would make this choice for our day together,” Meghan says in another clip. “And I think the other members of the family had a similar reaction and just appreciation for the fact that we understand how important this is for us and the role that we play, and the work that we’re going to continue to do within the Commonwealth countries.”

Meghan adds: “It was good news all around, I think, so I hope people like it as much as I liked helping to create it.”

Designer Clare Waight Keller previously told PEOPLE that the idea came to her after several conversations with Meghan about what “story” she wanted to tell with the celebration.

“There was a conversation early on about the story that we were going to tell through this wedding,” she said. “Part of what I wanted to do was talk to her about what type of stories they could be. The fact that her and Prince Harry will be working a lot in the Commonwealth was something that I thought was really intriguing and could be something built on to be part of the day.”

“We had different conversations back and forth and I came up with the idea of maybe representing each of the countries, the 53 countries of the Commonwealth, through their flora and fauna,” she added. “We both loved the story of that. It also meant that single one of those countries also journeyed up the aisle with her. It was a really poetic moment.”

The documentary features members of the royal family speaking about Queen Elizabeth and the Commonwealth — and it will air just before Harry and Meghan head to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga on their first official tour of Commonwealth nations.

A palace source previously told PEOPLE that Meghan takes part in “a conversation, a stand-up chat” for the film. The series will also feature appearances from Harry, Prince Charles and Prince William.

Queen of the World premieres Monday, Oct. 1 on HBO at 8 p.m.

How Meghan Markle Will Make Harry Feel Like a True Prince on His Birthday

Meghan Markle knows how to take a celebration up a notch. And for Prince Harry’s 34th birthday on Saturday, the duchess, who has called herself a “pretty good cook and a firm believer in handwritten notes,” will no doubt pull out all the stops for her new husband’s big day.

Thanks to her former love of social media and her now-defunct lifestyle website, The Tig, Meghan has given us major insight into how she’ll plan a birthday fit for a prince!

She’ll write Harry a love note.
“If given the option between fingers to keyboard, or pen to paper, I will always choose the latter,” she wrote. “Because amongst the throwback things that I love (a ’62 porsche speedster à la Dylan McKay in 90210, a bevy of Vargas girls, a Busby Berkeley film, or cooking over a charcoal grill), what trumps all is my love of writing (and receiving) a handwritten note.”

She’ll give a thoughtful gift…
“It’s easy to grab another T-shirt for your man — but you’ll likely steal it for PJs anyway. Instead, give him something creative that he’ll actually enjoy.”

…like a new book
“There’s simply nothing like making that first fire in the fireplace (or hey, just lighting a candle) and cracking open a new novel where endless possibilities abound. Because whether it’s to escape, to inform, to inspire, or to just turn off the world while you sit by a pool, I love getting lost in a good book.”

She’ll be affectionate.
“Let’s discuss the simple pleasures in life: holding someone’s hand so seamlessly that you can’t decipher their fingers from your own, fresh baked bread smeared with briny French butter, a smile that says you are endlessly adored, the sizzle and smell of sautéing onions, and finding the perfect book,” she wrote.

She’ll plan a fun trip.
“I have the travel bug not a week goes by without me finding my derrière on a plane.”

She’ll wear something special.
“Perhaps it’s the girly girl in me. Maybe it’s the fact that if given the choice between punk and pretty, I will always vote for pretty. For women looking like ladies. For the opportunity to wow with class and grace and fairytale level ball gown beauty.”

She’ll take him to a yoga class.
“I was born and raised in Los Angeles, a California girl who lives by the ethos that most things can be cured with either yoga, the beach, or a few avocados.”

She’ll cook him a special birthday meal.
“Some days you have a bite of food that makes you go ‘woah.’ Your eyes widen, you look down at the plate, almost pushing things around with your fork to see what’s making it so special. You take another bite, smiling as you do so, almost laughing, because it’s just so damn good.”

She’ll plan an epic date night.
“There’s nothing like a jewel box sized restaurant to add to the intimacy and coziness of a night out — because, let’s be honest — some the best meals of our lives have less to do with the food specifically, and more to do with the overall experience; the space being high on the list.”

She’ll be romantic.
“ think it’s safe to say that we all fall in love a little bit every day. Be it with your partner, your crush, even a person in passing that energetically makes your heart go pitter pat. Whatever the case may be, when you meet someone that makes you beam, you must take note.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Just Took the Next Step by Getting a New Dog

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have a new addition: a pup to share their lives, PEOPLE has confirmed.

The couple got the dog — believed to be a Labrador — in early summer, and the pooch has been joining them at their country getaway in the Cotswolds area and Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace in London, a source says.

Harry and Meghan’s new best friend will be a welcome addition to their rural walks. Dog lover Meghan, 37, had to leave one of her pets, Bogart, behind when she arrived in London from Toronto last November, when the couple got engaged. The rescue dog, a companion for Meghan’s Beagle Guy, was given to friends.

Guy, meanwhile, has been embedded into Meghan’s new royal life, and was at her feet as she sat for her hair and makeup on her wedding morning.

A spokeswoman at Kensington Palace declined to comment on the new arrival.

Harry and Meghan’s move mirrors that of his brother Prince William and Kate Middleton, who got Cocker Spaniel Lupo shortly after their wedding, settling him into life with them in Anglesey, North Wales.

Prince Harry Experienced a Minor Wardrobe Malfunction of His Own — a Giant Hole in His Shoe!

Watch your step, Prince Harry!

While the online world was making a big deal of Meghan Markle‘s barely noticeable undone top button while attending attending the wedding of Harry’s longtime pal Charlie van Straubenzee to Daisy Jenks on Saturday, the 33-year-old royal suffered a minor wardrobe malfunction himself.

Fans with a sharp eye for detail noticed that there was a rather large hole on the bottom of Prince Harry’s shoe, proving that even royals know there’s nothing better than comfortably broken in footwear.

Turns out, the shoes seem to be a favorite pair of Harry’s, even if they are a little worn out. He sported the same pair, hole and all, back in April during a memorial service in London’s Trafalgar Square to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the murder of gang victim Stephen Lawrence.

Meghan, who celebrated her 37th birthday on Saturday, gave a friendly wave to the crowd during the outing while her top button had come undone, revealing a black lace camisole under her color-block, pleated shirtdress from Club Monaco.

Beaumont Etiquette founder and expert in all things proper, Myka Meier, tells PEOPLE that wardrobe malfunctions don’t qualify as breaking royal protocol — they’re simply accidents.

RELATED VIDEO: Meghan Markle Steps Out with Prince Harry on Her Birthday to Celebrate a Friend’s Wedding

“Meghan did not break royal protocol when her bra showed, as accidents or wardrobe malfunctions are not considered going against dress code rules,” Meier explains. “Her bra showing was not believed to be deliberate, in which case she would have not been seen to be disrespectful by the palace.”

She adds, “A blatant disregard of a rule which was set in order to show respect would when you would consider a break in royal protocol, which the Duchess of Sussex did not do.”

Meghan was all smiles for her first birthday as an official royal after her own wedding in May.

Although the Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at the church separately, as Harry was with other close pals of the groom helping with arrangements and ushering duties, the pair were seen holding hands together at the ceremony, as Harry gazed approvingly at his wife.

While Harry tended to his duties, Meghan chatted with several women in attendance, including Celia McCorquodale, whose June wedding she previously attended with Harry.

Meghan Markle Steps Out with Prince Harry on Her Birthday to Celebrate a Friend’s Wedding

Meghan Markle is surrounded by lots of love on her birthday!

She and Prince Harry found themselves in a familiar place on Saturday — in church — as they celebrated another special wedding. The newlyweds attended the ceremony for one of Harry’s oldest family friends, Charlie van Straubenzee, 30, who married his 27-year-old girlfriend, Daisy Jenks, in Surrey on Saturday afternoon.

And it was a double celebration as Saturday marks Meghan’s 37th birthday — her first as an official royal after her own wedding in May.

Also at the nuptials in the English countryside (about 50 miles south of London) were another couple preparing for the second royal wedding of the year – Princess Eugenie and her fiancé, Jack Brooksbank. They are set to walk down the aisle at St. George’s Chapel (Meghan and Harry’s wedding site) at Windsor Castle on October 12.

Contrary to reports, Harry, 33, is not serving as best man at his good friend’s ceremony. But he is involved in the proceedings, including usher duties. He’ll also likely have a hand in some of the fun shenanigans planned for the reception.

Not in attendance were Prince William and wife Kate Middleton, who have been on summer vacation with their children, Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 3, and Prince Louis, 3 months, in Mustique.

The wedding comes nearly three months since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s own fabulous day on May 19. A month later, they were at the nuptials of Princess Diana’s niece, Celia McCorquodale.

The friendship of Harry and van Straubenzee goes back to their prep school, Ludgrove. Harry was a classmate of Charlie’s late brother, Henry (who tragically died in a car crash in 2002). William is a close friend of the groom’s brother, Thomas (who is a godfather to Princess Charlotte), and both princes are joint patrons of a memorial fund to help schools in Uganda set up in Henry’s name.

August marks the summer break for the royals – most of whom will visit the Queen at Balmoral, Scotland, for at least part of their vacation. But William will be seen again in public on August 8, when he travels to France to attend a ceremony marking the centenary commemoration of the Battle of Amiens, which played a significant role in the ending of WWI.

Independents’ Day: Canada’s Harry Rosen Has Owned the Men’s Market for Decades

TORONTO — Harry Rosen has a lock on the Canadian men’s wear market, but that hold hasn’t come without a lot of hard work.
The company was founded in 1954 by Harry and his brother Lou Rosen in a small storefront in Toronto to provide made-to-measure suits for men. The firm has since grown into a 300 million Canadian dollar ($ 228.3 million), 18-store chain with locations in the seven largest cities around the country and some 1,000 employees.
Although Harry stepped back from the day-to-day operation of the business in 2005, he still serves as an ambassador, often stopping by one of the stores to chat with customers. But he left the company in good hands: as chief executive officer since 2000, his son Larry Rosen has built on his father’s legacy. Waiting in the wings is Ian Rosen, Larry’s son, who is joining the family business this summer to oversee its digital marketing initiatives, and at the same time, ensure the eventual transition to the next generation will be seamless.
But Harry Rosen has also branched out beyond its core business, teaming up with Ermenegildo Zegna to open flagship stores for the luxury Italian label in Canada. In August, a 3,000-square-foot Zegna

Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery’s Biggest Problem Isn’t Its Energy Mechanic

The question “what Hogwarts House would you be in?” is still a conversational ice-breaker among millenials, over 21 years since JK Rowling first let Harry out the cupboard under the stairs.

It’s asked at dinner parties to friends just met; on Tinder to potential suitors; and has become so trusted-a-method of ascertaining one’s character, it’s a wonder it’s not replaced Myers-Briggs. The reason is simple. The only thing that fascinates us more about the labyrinthine corridors of Hogwarts is what it’d be like to walk in them.

So when Jam City announced it was making a Harry Potter mobile RPG that would “make players feel for the first time like they’re attending Hogwarts,” the internet detonated like an erumpent horn. Finally, fans would be able to experience life at Hogwarts – actually seeking adventure in JK Rowling’s rich world, rather than passively reading about it or watching Daniel Radcliffe live it.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Official Wedding Portraits Were Just Released!

Picture perfect!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are celebrating the end of their royal wedding weekend with the release of their official wedding portraits on Monday.

Taken in the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle after the royal couple’s magical carriage procession, the portraits were shot by fashion photographer, Alexi Lubomirski, who took the couple’s dreamy engagement photos at Frogmore House in Windsor late last year.

The first photo is an epic gathering of the entire royal family (minus 4-week-old Prince Louis, who stayed home at the palace!), the little bridal party and Meghan’s proud mother, Doria Ragland.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex would like to thank everyone who took part in the celebrations of their wedding on Saturday. They feel so lucky to have been able to share their day with all those gathered in Windsor and also all those who watched the wedding on television across the U.K., Commonwealth, and around the world,” a Kensington Palace spokesperson said.

“Their Royal Highnesses are delighted with these official portraits taken by Alexi Lubomirski and are happy to be able to share them today. They would also like to say thank you for all of the generous messages of support they have received.”

Also featured in the photo set is a picture of just Harry and Meghan with their adorable page boys and bridesmaids. Led by the couple’s niece and nephew, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, the eight other children include several of Harry and Meghan’s godchildren and children of their friends: Florence van Cutsem, 3; Remi Litt, 6 and her sister Rylan, 7; Ivy Mulroney, 4; Zalie Warren, 2; Jasper Dyer, 6; and twins Brian and John Mulroney, 7.

The bride and groom themselves posed for a romantic black-and-white photo featuring just the two of them. Taken just moments after they tied the knot, the love and happiness they felt on the day is evident on their smiling faces.

“It has been an incredible honor and privilege to document The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s inspiring journey of love, hope and family; from the engagement photos, all the way through to the official wedding and family portraits on Saturday,” Lubomirski said in a statement. “This has been a beautiful chapter in my career and life, that I will happily never forget.”

At the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the official portraits of the couple and the bridal party were taken by Hugo Burnand. Burnand was also on hand to shoot the official pictures for the wedding of Prince Charles to Camilla Parker-Bowles six years earlier.

Prince Harry and Meghan Are Upholding a ‘Very Important’ Tradition Involving the Wedding Dress!

They may be getting married in front of the entire world, but Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are just like brides and grooms everywhere when it comes to certain traditions.

The future newlyweds are avoiding the bad luck superstition of the groom seeing the bride in her dress before the ceremony. In a press briefing on Friday, the palace confirmed that the first time Harry will see Meghan in her wedding gown will be when she walks down the aisle.

“That tradition is very important to them,” a palace spokesman said.

Harry and Meghan will also be spending the night before their wedding apart. And they will stay at Windsor Castle on the night of their wedding.

While details of her dress are being kept under wraps, the couple has revealed that Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, will be walking her down the aisle at St. George’s Chapel on May 19.

Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, will travel with her daughter by car to Windsor Castle the morning of the wedding.

“Ms. Markle is delighted to have her parents by her side on this important and happy occasion,” the palace announced.

There are several royal family traditions Meghan will also consider for her wedding. Every royal bride since 1858 has carried a sprig of myrtle — the “herb of love” — in her wedding bouquet. The royal family has also been using pure Welsh gold for their wedding rings ever since the Queen Mother’s wedding in 1923.

And while most brides honor the tradition of throwing the bouquet, Meghan’s floral posy (by Phillippa Craddock) will very likely end up in Westminster Abbey, rather than in the hands of one of her bridesmaids. Most royal brides (including Kate Middleton and Princess Diana) have sent their floral bouquets back to the Abbey to rest on the Grave of the Unknown Soldier, a place of remembrance for fallen soldiers since 1920.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery Discounts Its Microtransactions Following Heavy Criticism

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery has slashed its microtransaction prices after receiving criticisms about the game’s mechanics and monetization methods.

Eurogamer reports that as well as heavily discounting microtransactions, the free-to-play mobile app is offering various prices to different users. This is seemingly a second phase of A/B testing, with both the original and discounted prices appearing for users.

A/B testing presents two versions of something, in this case the pricing of microtransactions in an app, to see which option performs better. The Harry Potter mobile game appears to be discounting 130 gems to 99p down from £4.99 for some users, while others are seeing a drop from £2.99 to 79p for the same bundle.

Among the guests was Prince William, who is set to become a father for the third time when the Duchess of Cambridge gives birth later this month. The heavily-pregnant Kate Middleton wasn’t there so it was Markle who flew the fashion flag, donning a  midnight blue Stella McCartney cape dress, and carrying a Naeem Khan clutch.

Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Are Not Inviting Barack and Michelle Obama to Their Wedding

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are keeping politics out of their upcoming royal wedding.

“It has been decided that an official list of political leaders – both U.K. and international – is not required for Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s wedding. Her Majesty’s Government was consulted on this decision, which was taken by The Royal Household,” a Kensington Palace spokesman said Tuesday.

Their decision to omit world leaders from their guest list means former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama will not be attending the May 19 ceremony at Windsor Castle, PEOPLE understands.

While Harry and Meghan have become close to the couple (these photos of BFFs Harry and Michelle are proof!), their guest list is being reserved for long-standing friends they have known for years.

Even though Barack and Michelle won’t be at their wedding, Harry and Meghan have plans to visit with the Obamas in the near future.

“Both the couples look forward to seeing each other soon,” adds a royal source.

Harry has become close to Michelle in recent years through their mutual work on behalf of veterans. Barack also supported Harry’s Invictus Games in Toronto last September.

The absence of dignitaries at the wedding also means President Donald Trump and senior British politicians will not be invited.

“Those in attendance will be people who one or both of the couple has a existing direct relationship with,” adds a royal source.

Whereas royal heir Prince William‘s wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011 had world leaders and dignitaries in attendance, a similar list of prominent guests is “not required” for Harry, who is currently fifth-in-line to the throne (and soon to be sixth with the birth of William and Kate’s third child later this month). If there are senior members of other royal families invited to the wedding, it will be because Harry has a close relationship with them.

Insiders also note that William and Kate wed in the grand Westminster Abbey in front of about 1,900 invitees, but Harry and Meghan’s venue at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle is much smaller and will have around 600 guests. “It will still be a royal wedding and an important occasion,” the royal source adds.

The palace also released the names of some of the lucky 1,200 members of the public who have been invited from around the U.K. to the grounds of Windsor Castle for an up-close view of their wedding day. The special guests were chosen from “young people who have shown strong leadership, and those who have served their communities,” the palace says in a statement.

Another 200 guests will come from charities linked with Meghan and Harry, including WellChild for seriously ill kids and the Invictus Games for sick and injured veterans and serving military members. There will also be 100 children from two local schools – the Royal School, situated in the Great Park of Windsor, and St. George’s School, below the castle.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Visited a Castle Today and the Photos Are a Fairy Tale Come True!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said a big “prynhawn da” (good afternoon in Welsh!) to Wales on Thursday, where cheering crowds welcomed them to the capital city of Cardiff.

The newly engaged couple stepped out at Cardiff Castle, a 2,000-year-old historic site that features Rapunzel-worthy towers and opulent interiors. The visit marked the latest milestone in the ongoing introduction of Meghan to the British public in the countdown to the royal wedding on May 19. Meghan honored the locale by pairing her black Stella McCartney coat with pants by Welsh brand Hiut Denim.

The couple was all smiles as they held hands while they greeted the crowds gathered outside the castle.

Harry, 33, and the L.A.-raised Meghan, 36, were greeted by well-wishers before being given a taste of modern Welsh life and traditional culture. Among those pressed against the barrier — and displaying her American flag — was Julie Hoefer, 31, from Dundas, Va.

“We don’t have a royal family in America, and the whole idea is amazing,” she said. “And now we have one who joined the family — finally. It is super exciting.”

She hopes the flag will catch the couple’s eye so that they say hello. “That’s the goal,” says Hoefer, who teaches in Kuwait and is in the U.K. on vacation. Next to them was Cynthia Osborne, a retired nurse from Cardiff. She wrapped a Welsh flag around her red Stetson-style hat and held a bunch of daffodils, the national flower of Wales.

“Meghan looks lovely, a breath of fresh air,” said Osborne. “She sparkles — and I’d like to see the ring to see if it sparkles.”

The castle gates were thrown open to the public at 9 a.m., enabling as many as people as possible to join the crowds. Meghan and Harry’s last outing was in Brixton on January 9, and they are expected to make several more before their Windsor Castle wedding.

Earlier, Cardiff’s city council leader Huw Thomas said they were delighted to “extend a warm Welsh welcome” to the couple, adding, “Their visit will aim to showcase some of the rich heritage and culture that we are very proud of here in Cardiff.”

After the excitement of the crowds, the couple watched performances from musicians and poets, met some famous local athletes and learn about the bodies that promote the Welsh language and cultural identity.

Their second outing in the capital was scheduled at Star Hub, a community and leisure center in the eastern suburb of Tremorfa where they were set to hear how the center helps young people excel through sports. It is a key area of Harry’s public work and the charity StreetGames, which the prince has regularly worked with, will show off some of their local programs.

His engagement to Markle, which was revealed early Monday, finally puts an end to years of broken relationships, notably with the Zimbabwean lawyer Chelsy Davy and the British actress Cressida Bonas, and the prince’s sadness about not being able to find the right partner.

Christmas Comes to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

In order to celebrate the holiday season, Universal Studios Hollywood has transformed the Wizarding World of Harry Potter section of the park into a Christmas wonderland. There have been numerous additions to Hogsmeade village in order to give it that holiday flair, and top among them was a dazzling light projection show that transforms Hogwarts castle into something, well, magical.

Hogwarts castle overlooks Hogsmeade village and houses the premiere ride, Harry Potter and Forbidden Journey, but from November 24, 2017 through January 7, 2018, theme park attendees can gather around for a new light show, The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle. Festive music mixed with that ominous/whimsical Harry Potter tune played as the entirety of the castle was repeatedly transformed. At one point it was encased in beautiful blue ice; ghostly carolers sang songs and danced in the air; and a full array of Christmas decorations suddenly appeared. Owls and floating lanterns could be seen flying across the castle walls. Fred and George Weasley even made an appearance to wrap the castle in advertisements for their joke shop.

It’s Rugby Day for William and Harry! Royal Brothers Tackle Separate Games

It is rugby day for royal brothers Prince Harry and Prince William. The athletic royals may be over 100 miles apart, but they are both supporting the sport they love.

Harry, 33, was at Twickenham, on the western edge of London, catching England as they took on Argentina on Saturday, while William, 35, headed to Cardiff to catch Wales playing Australia.

During a poignant weekend for the U.K., as those who have died or been injured in wars are being remembered, Harry met volunteers from the Commonwealth War Grave Commission (CWGC), which is the official match-day charity at the England game. The organization builds and maintains the memorials and preserves records of those who perished in WWI and WWII around the globe. Harry, who is patron of the Rugby Football Union, which runs the game in England, also met with those nominated for their contribution to the sport across the country.

Meanwhile, William, who is royal patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, will spend time with the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust, which supports players and their families who have been severely injured while playing rugby in Wales.

And, at half time, William is set to chat with local Coach Core Apprentices, who are learning to be role models and mentors in their communities, under a mentoring program devised by William, Harry and Kate Middleton to create more sports trainers in the 16-24 age group. It is part of the royals’ drive to use sport as a way of bringing about positive change, especially for young people.

The royal brothers have already marked Remembrance week, with William speaking at a dinner for veterans at the Imperial War Museum, London, and Harry laying a small wooden cross among hundreds of others at the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey on Thursday (when he joked that he “can’t hide” girlfriend Meghan Markle at public events).

Prince Harry Says Young People Spend Too Much Time on Phones: Let’s ‘Process Our Thoughts’ Instead

Prince Harry says the mental health campaign that he started alongside Prince William and Princess Kate is beginning to “shift the dial” — and on Thursday, he also highlighted a current concern of modern life.

“I cannot tell you how pleased William, Catherine and I are that the dial seems to have shifted and that there is now greater understanding, compassion and kindness for anyone who opens up about their struggles,” he said in a speech at a mental health event in Leeds in northern England. “But let’s not kid ourselves that the job is done — there is much, much more that we can do at every level to make conversations about mental health as common place as those about physical health.”

Harry, William and Kate set up Heads Together to promote mental-health awareness and support in April 2016. On Thursday, Harry noted the extreme amount of time people spend on their phones.

“I read recently that young people check their phones at least 150 times per day – I’m sure we could all be more effective and efficient if we took a moment to process our thoughts rather than rushing from one thing to the next,” he said.

Also on Thursday the prince, 32, followed a stadium to watch kids play rugby league in a bid to help encourage more than 700,000 children from primary and secondary schools playing the game.

They are taking part in a festival of seven-a-side touch rugby league games, coached by current England players and local coaches from the Leeds Rhinos Foundation. It is Harry’s first engagement in his new role as Royal Patron of the Rugby Football League.

Harry’s two-day tour of Leeds will continue on Friday, when he is scheduled to visit a children’s hospital as well as the home of a seriously ill 5-year-old boy who is being supported by WellChild, another of Harry’s key charities.

A Retrospective On ‘Harry Potter’ Midnight Release Parties

If you ask a diehard “Harry Potter” fan where they were at midnight on July 21, 2007, they’ll know: Waiting at a bookstore to snag a copy of the final “Harry Potter” book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, to read it as fast as they possibly could.

To be a “Harry Potter” fan is a wondrous thing, but there’s a point of pride that comes with being a Potter fan from the start. For one, there’s that ineffable feeling of being able to say, “I’ve been enjoying this series since the beginning and I have watched it grow.” But it also means you were there for the midnight book drops.

Local booksellers and global ones, like Barnes & Noble, led these drops for the final four books in the “Harry Potter” canon. For the uninformed, they went like this: You and your friends or family would deck yourselves out in “Potter” universe-themed regalia (which could be as simple as pair of Potter glasses or donning House-specific colors) the night before the day of a book release. Then you’d head to your local bookstore to get in a (usually long) line — unless you reserved a book beforehand. Once admitted into the bookstore, plastic bracelet swirling on your wrist, you’d have lots of options for what to do to kill the time before midnight when you could get your hands on the fresh pages.

You could run to the cardboard cutouts of book covers to be photographed, comment on fellow readers’ costumes, get your face painted, exchange theories ― each store had different offerings, but all were “Potter”-specific festivities. After you’d partaken in your share of events and midnight arrived so you could score your copy, you’d get home as quickly as possible so as to devour the book before a “friend” could spoil any of the newness before you got to it.

These drops were often touted as parties, primarily because the happenings within the stores were party-esque, but also because the general atmosphere and joyous attitudes of expectant readers facilitated it. Original “Potter” fans know the excitement leading up to each and every book drop, an enthusiasm that reached a crescendo when the books were finally in their desperately curious hands.

But it took a bit of time to get there.

The midnight release parties didn’t exist until 2000 ― three years after the first book in the series was published. That delay can likely be attributed to Americans who were late to the party in getting ahold of the books, only being exposed to the first novel ― Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone — in August 1998, a full year after its release in England. Though, once Sorcerer’s Stone (or Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, as it’s known in the U.K.) crossed the ocean, it made serious waves. It was on The New York Times bestseller list for more than 40 weeks, with its hype only growing once Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban landed on stands.

By the end of 1999, Pottermania around the globe was in full swing. Booksellers chalked up the newfound obsession to reliability and the admirable qualities of the story’s protagonist, but, above all, they knew they had a fire on their hands that could easily be stoked. In 2000, the publishers put into motion a midnight release for the series’ fourth installment, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Thus, the midnight book drop parties were born.

And they didn’t stop in bookstores. At that point, the late-night Pottermania flooded over to movie theaters. When the first “Potter” film came out in 2001, it cast an even wider net for the fanbase to expand and allowed for the film franchise to subsequently create its own iteration of midnight release parties for the film premieres. Theaters all over began to look like the hallways of Hogwarts.

Despite the hype of the films carrying over until 2011, when the last one was released, one could argue that the true “end” of Pottermania was in 2007. (Others can argue it’s ongoing, but that’s a discussion for another time). Sure, there was a brief resurrection in 2016 when “The Cursed Child” came out, but it’d be careless to not acknowledge the massive sea change.

When the first “Harry Potter” book was released in June 26, 1997, it was in an age where the internet was still considered uncharted territory. Most cell phones did nothing more than make calls, and bookstores were the primary locale for book buying. Even 10 years later, in 2007, the iPhone was still in its infancy, e-readers weren’t mainstream, and brick-and-mortar bookstores like Borders and Waldenbooks were thriving. In that era, the midnight book parties could prosper because there was something to be gained by obtaining a tangible book: You’d be one of the first to get it. Had Instagram existed then, posting a photo of your “Harry Potter” book would have surely been worth its weight in likes and social currency.

But with digital book sales reigning in today’s book market (though at questionable rates) and online publishers releasing spoilers at lightning speeds, there isn’t a franchise today that’s harnessed that same spark that “Potter” fans emitted. That era, 1997 to 2007, was truly a sweet spot for readers. They watched the fandom bloom from nothing, lined up willingly outside of a physical store ― oftentimes without a celebrity-sighting incentive ― and read without the fear of a push-alert or Twitter spoiler.

It was pure magic and all was well.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of the very first “Harry Potter” book, we’ve rounded up up a selection of photos that harken back to the golden era of “Potter” fandom. If you’re inclined to take a trip down Diagon Alley memory lane with us, please enjoy these Potter flashbacks of parties past.

Buckbeak Slyly Pooped Onscreen In ‘Harry Potter’ And You Didn’t Even Know

We knew “Harry Potter” was the s**t. We just didn’t know that was literal.

Even if you’re the biggest “Harry Potter” fan, you probably don’t know all the secrets the movies have to offer. Recently, HuffPost stepped into a big one.

In “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” Buckbeak the Hippogriff secretly poops onscreen:

Did you see it? Look again … at Buckbeak’s butt.

See it now?

How did this happen? Was Buckbeak just nervous? Does Hagrid have a magic pooper scooper? IS THIS CALLED A NIM-BUTTS 2000?

We have so many questions.

That’s why we got in touch with Framestore’s Michael Eames, who worked on the computerized characters in the film. The company first came into the franchise, and the world of visual effects, during production of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.” Framestore then went on to bring some of the series’ most memorable creatures to life, including Fawkes the Phoenix, the Basilisk and, of course, Buckbeak.

Eames confirmed that, yes, Buckbeak takes a poo on screen.

(100 percent. That’s a confirmed poo.)

He also explained how it happened.

Eames told us that plopping in little Easter eggs like a character relieving himself is nothing new in animation. Back in the day, animators were hand-drawing most or all of the frames, so it was common practice to sneak things in for laughs.

“I can’t really go into too much detail with that, but there were some pretty outrageous things that slipped past editorial in those days, but I supposed as an animator you were kind of always looking for an opportunity to have a bit of a laugh on the side, and I guess that’s where that came from,” said Eames.

Here’s that Buckbeak moment one more time for s**ts and giggles (mostly the former):

Eames continued, “If you can be serious on that moment, I think we were trying very much to get a naturalistic feel to the way that Buckbeak behaved as a character, his whole being animalistic. I think he was described at the time by [director] Alfonso Cuarón as a sort of adolescent teenager, so we were trying to kind of place this character we very much wanted to get across in a very sort of real environment. It felt like something that he would do naturally, if there was an opportunity, would be a good idea.”

Eames says he believes his team told the director about the scene and were given the bathroom pass. In his recollection, the animator said Cuarón “thought it was funny and perfectly fitting.”

In addition to that moment, Eames told us that bringing Buckbeak to life was a huge challenge for Framestore, calling the hippogriff a “milestone” character in visual effects.

He explained that up to that point, CG characters “always felt like they needed to be glossed up.”

“There were lots of very [dimly] lit moments for Buckbeak, when he’s in the pumpkin patch for example, and it’s all quite gray and miserable. It wasn’t what you would expect in terms of how you would treat a fully CG, fully feathered, all singing, all dancing character like that, so there was that earthy quality to it.”

Though there were also animatronic versions of Buckbeak, Eames said at a relatively late stage the company was asked to do much more CG work on the film, and that the robotic one may only appear in the movie in two shots.

Buckbeak was built in a collaborative process from the bones up. Thanks to all that work, we finally got an animated character worth giving a crap about — one big, animated crap.

5 Unexpected Things We Learned On The ‘Harry Potter’ Studio Tour

You can go to London without visiting the Warner Bros. studio, where cast and crew brought J.K. Rowling’s expansive magical world to the screen. But if you’re a Harry Potter” fan, you really shouldn’t.

HuffPost had the pleasure of touring the corners of Hogwarts and beyond that have been carefully set up for fans to lovingly gaze at, obsessively photograph, and even consume ― the Butterbeer is delicious ― in Leavesden, England.

Awash in “Harry Potter” nostalgia, we walked through the Great Hall, where professors McGonagall and Snape stand at attention on either side of Dumbledore. We peered into the surprisingly compact Gryffindor common room and brushed by the magnificent Fat Lady, sans password. We saw Harry’s Hogwarts acceptance letters strung up to cloud the Dursleys’ living room with a flurry of paper whizzing motionless out of the fireplace. We nipped into the Hogwarts Express, where cars representing Harry, Ron and Hermione’s many years of rides are littered with candy wrappers, books and copies of the Quibbler. We admired a wall of newspapers, envelopes, cereal boxes and every other array of printed prop, all blessed with the wizarding world’s unique typography that screams in block letters at one turn and appears calmly serifed at another. We passed the Knight Bus and the infamously well-manicured Privet Drive. We forgot our Put-Outer, so the street remained illuminated.

In a new section of the studio, we witnessed the Whomping Willow in destructive action and strolled along a trail through a forest full of meticulously handcrafted trees that obscure one special hippogriff and too many arachnids. And that’s not even half of all we saw.

Among the many bits and bobs along the way, we picked up some trivia on the “Harry Potter” film series. Our list doesn’t give away everything to be discovered on a visit, and certainly can’t replicate the whimsical wizarding atmosphere culled from the thoughtful work of prop developers and costumers over 10 years of filming. Nevertheless, we’ve shared a few pieces of knowledge below.

1. Some of the Hogwarts castle portraits actually depict muggles.

Although the depth and breadth of Rowling’s wizarding world could surely have produced enough famous magical faces to fill the halls of Hogwarts ― the set included nearly 350 enchanted portraits ― producers allowed many of the film’s crew to pose for portraits to fill in the gaps. On view, for the sharp-sighted, are Barry Wilkinson the prop master, David Heyman the producer and Stuart Craig the production designer, among others. All look as if they know just the precise way to inflect “leviosa.”

2. There’s a picture of a young Professor McGonagall hanging in the Gryffindor common room.

Her dark hair is greying, and she displays a very prim expression, gazing slightly down her nose at the painter, but the witch pictured bears only a slight resemblance to Dame Maggie Smith. Or the witch described in the book, with her affinity for emerald green and tartan robes; this McGonagall is in blue, with a gold pendant around her neck. (Yes, you’ll have to make a visit to see her.)

3. Some of the potions ingredients in Snape’s classroom are actually zoo souvenirs.

Professor Snape is a closet fan of muggle zoos, it seems. Among the more than 500 of bottles stashed along the walls of the dungeon classroom, some with handwritten labels, are plastic animals from the shop at the zoo in London’s Regent’s Park. That’s a significantly cuter way to illustrate pickled animals, like the ones the dungeon is meant to house, than some of the other things in those jars ― namely, baked animal bones from a nearby butcher.

4. 15,000 glowing prophecy orbs were trashed because director David Yates changed his mind.

Well, not trashed, exactly ― you can see them displayed on the tour. The dusty glass orbs were created to illustrate the Ministry of Magic’s luminescent Hall of Prophecy that contained records of foretold events, including the prophecy made by Professor Trelawney about a child with the power to defeat Voldemort. The props weren’t used in the film, though, because Yates ― who directed “The Order of the Phoenix,” “The Half-Blood Prince” and both “Deathly Hallows” installments ― decided to use CGI to create them. They might’ve been destroyed anyway in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, but imagine being those prop designers.

5. In certain scenes, Hagrid’s head is fake.

One of the more eerie behind-the-scenes revelations is seeing the bodiless head of Hagrid ― complete with artful wrinkles, rosy veins and individual eyebrow hairs ― that the prop department made for tall stunt doubles portraying him in action scenes and wide shots. Filmmakers used this and many other tricks to make the lovable half-giant appear so much larger than life: Another had Robbie Coltrane, who is only 6-foot-1, seated at a split-level table, one higher and nearer the camera and one lower and further away, to achieve a forced perspective effect that made the actor appear huge across from his companion. You can try it out for yourself on the tour ― photos encouraged.

Tickets can be found on the “Harry Potter” Warner Bros. Studio Tour website.

Here’s What The First ‘Harry Potter’ Book Looks Like Around The World

In its 20 years on this planet Earth, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone — or Philosopher’s, if you’re British — has been officially translated into 68 languages (and unofficially even more than that).

Naturally, some aspects of J.K. Rowling’s characters and plot require a bit of finessing so they make sense in languages other than her native English. The verbal clues that help readers imagine the school houses of Slytherin and Ravenclaw, for example, turn into “Serpentard” and “Serrdaigle” (roughly “snake” and “eagle talon”) in French. In German, “The Mirror of Erised” becomes “Der Spiegel Nerhegeb” — “nerhegeb” being the German word for “desire” spelled backwards.

Character names aren’t safe from alteration in translation, either. Buckbeak the Hippogriff becomes “Hardodziób,” roughly meaning “haughty beak,” in Poland. In Iceland, Crookshanks the cat becomes “Skakklappi,” or “crook-legged.” The wayward owl Pigwidgeon simply is “Kvík” in Slovak, or “squeak.”

Rowling’s affinity for puns requires some smart work on the part of the translator, as well; in a recent discussion over whether Ron Weasley and Lavender Brown ever had sex on the “Harry Potter” sub-Reddit board, users mused over the differences in translation over a scene during Divination class. After Lavender realizes she’s found Uranus, Ron requests whether he can “see Uranus, too.” Oh, ho, ho — but for readers in other languages to get the joke, the pun had to be altered somewhat, from “Uranus” to simply a “heavenly body” (that Ron would like to see, too). Ten points to the translator who had to finesse that one.

The text isn’t the only thing that has changed as the story of “Harry Potter” traveled from country to country. Various publishers chose to stray from the American cover illustrated by Mary GrandPré or the U.K. version created by Thomas Taylor, while others did not. Here are 21 magical covers from the first “Harry Potter” book that stole our hearts.

Diving Deep Into The Erotic World Of ‘Harry Potter’ Fan Fiction

Hermione Granger, a 19-year-old seventh year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, has retired to the lavish prefect’s bathroom for a relaxing bath. But ― uh oh ― just as she’s drying off, she hears someone else enter the marbled, gilded washroom. Someone smoldering. Someone romantic. Someone who’s about to rock her world sexually. Severus… Snape?

Allie LeFevere and Lyndsay Rush are aghast at the thought. “I hope this goes… it was Professor Snape, and he was just grabbing something and leaving,” Rush gasps, giggling. “God,” LeFevere adds, “I feel like this is going to get real aggressive.”

Snape is not just grabbing something and leaving, of course. This is “The Potterotica Podcast,” and the two cohosts have just begun the first season, in which they read a nine-episode erotic fanfic story aloud. The story: “In the Prefect’s Bathroom” by fanfic writer Mrs. Figg, which takes place after the seventh book. The pairing: Hermione and Snape, sometimes known as “Snermione.”

For those familiar with erotic fan fiction, the preceding three paragraphs probably won’t sound bizarre or disturbing; for more straight-laced Potterheads, they might be viscerally shocking. LeFevere, Rush and the third cohost Danny Chapman, who joined the podcast (now on its second season) more recently, fall into the second camp. Casual “Harry Potter” fans, they stumbled into the world of erotic fan fiction not long ago. But rather than being horrified by the vast world of Potter-based erotica, they embraced it ― and found the humor in it.

“It’s so fun and so silly, and sometimes it’s sexy, but mostly we’re just laughing,” Rush told HuffPost in a recent phone conversation. They framed “The Potterotica Podcast” as a comedy show ― and indeed, they spend much of each episode howling with laughter at the romantic speeches or descriptions of a male lead’s “slender, pale legs” that are “sparsely covered with black hair.” (Apparently some people don’t find that look to be arousing.)

Much of the comedy comes from juxtaposing these beloved children’s book characters ― none written by J.K. Rowling to be sex symbols, and some written as buffoonish, grotesque or evil ― with adult sexual situations and frankly expressed desire. “If it was out of a comedic context, I think it would be very difficult to talk about these characters in a sexual way,” LeFevere said, “but there’s something about layering on satire that makes it more digestible.”

“The Potterotica Podcast” isn’t the first erotica podcast played for laughs ― even some erotica and erotic fanfic is itself infused with absurd humor. (Remember A Gronking to Remember?) Before landing on Potterotica, LeFevere and Rush contemplated a romance novel podcast. Where does our urge to laugh at overtly sexual writing come from? Why might pornographic stories about Harry and Draco, or Hermione and Snape, seem hilarious rather than simply titillating or, alternately, disturbing?

“I almost wonder if it’s because there’s still so much taboo around sex,” LeFevere floated. “The defenses go down when you can laugh and also maybe talk about a topic that maybe feels uncomfortable.”

Rush agreed, adding that the humorous side to sex isn’t restricted to blowsy erotica. “Recording the podcast and discussing these things in this way feels like it would if I had a glass of wine with my friends and we were talking about sex,” she said. “I don’t know if it’s necessarily that laughter is you masking your vulnerability or if it’s just a shade of vulnerability. You’re looking at this intimate thing in a lighthearted way.”

The hosts ask authors for permission before sharing their work on the podcast, but they have received some pushback for making light of Potterotica. When they were promoting the podcast on fan communities, LeFevere ventured into a subreddit devoted to Potterotica enthusiasts, and found that the members were less than thrilled by their angle. For some fans, Chapman said, “this isn’t to be laughed at; this is serious business.” For these redditors, LeFevere said, “Us laughing at it and giggling and making jokes was very offensive,” she said. “They were just like, no, this isn’t our jam.”

The line between serious erotica consumer and comedy fan isn’t a bright one, however. Not only do the Potterotica podcasters receive story submissions from fanfic authors who want their works to be included in a comedy show, the three hosts have realized that sexual awakening can be found in unexpected places ― like a fanfic about Hermione receiving a “Magic Mike”-esque lap dance from Draco, the plot of a Facebook Live installment the podcast did. “I think that was the hottest one,” Rush admitted.

As for LeFevere, she’s a fan of another Dramione fic, the one they’re reading in the current season. “I love it because they’re both notorious in their class and were nemeses,” she told HuffPost. “They bring out a different side of each other in these stories: Hermione’s more risqué and edgy, and we’re starting to see the softer side of Draco.”

A certain gingerness surrounding the ages of the subjects also creeps in. In many fics, the characters are depicted in their adult lives, but others take place during the series timeframe. Some show relationships between professors and students ― before or after their graduation. “The one that I am shocked by is Snape and Harry,” said LeFevere. “That’s a really popular one, and I think more than anything the shock is because of the role he played in Harry’s life at the end of the books and movies… He almost to some degree becomes a mentor, a fatherly figure.”

The cohosts pointed out that, though they try to be very mindful of the ages of the characters, we’re naturally curious about what happened next to fictional people we watched grow up. That includes romance. If anything, they wish there were more explorations of canon relationships, in a Potterotica world packed with Dramione, Snarry and Drarry fics. “In my limited experience, no one’s writing about Hermione and Ron like I hoped they would,” Rush said. “It sounds very lame and old-school, but I would have loved to see more of them.”

The accessibility of adult entertainment offered by fanfic (or a fanfic podcast) makes it a welcoming avenue toward sexual exploration, the hosts pointed out. “Something that makes this erotic world approachable is that these are characters you feel you know so well and trust,” explained Rush. “So you feel like, Oh, I could sort of get into this.” As many erotic fanfiction readers have discovered in the past, interweaving explicit content into a familiar, nonsexual story allowed them to gradually explore more sexually charged narratives, whereas porn may have seemed too intimidating and romance novels too weighed down by character backstory. Even as they laugh at the Potterotica they read, they find excitement in it.

“This has been a big sexual awakening,” said LeFevere, who has rarely read romance novels in the past. “It’s been a fun way to explore our own sexuality, our experiences.”

Though they emphasize that they know many Potter fans have enjoyed erotic fan fiction for years, the podcasters have found much of their listener base is newer to the art form ― a perhaps still-more accessible way for novices to get comfortable with adult entertainment. “The podcast format is also so great for it, because as soon as you watch a video, it’s like, uh, that’s porn,” Chapman joked. Opening up an erotic romance novel in public might seem nearly as embarrassing. On a podcast, though, “You can bring it to life and close your eyes and sort of imagine it without, like, watching porn on a plane.”

Surely anything that encourages more people to get comfortable with their sexuality, without watching porn in public, is a good thing.

Reunited! Prince Harry and Barack Obama Meet Up at Kensington Palace

Look who’s back!

On Saturday, former President Barack Obama met up with Prince Harry at Kensington Palace — where Harry lives in London — for an informal chat. The visit came a little over one year after Obama’s headline-making visit to the Palace where he met with Harry, Princess Kate, Prince William and a bathrobe-wearing Prince George.

The two  discussed “a range of shared interests,” a palace spokesperson said in a statement — including “support for veterans, mental health, conservation, empowering young people and the work of their respective foundations.”

Obama, 55, also offered his condolences to the victims and support for those recovering from injuries from Monday’s tragic attack in Manchester, that left 22 people killed and 119 injured from an explosive device detonated by a suicide bomber moments after an Ariana Grande concert ended.

On Tuesday, the former president tweeted about the attack, writing “Our hearts go out to those killed and wounded in Manchester. Americans will always stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of the UK.”

He also wrote about his meeting with Harry on Saturday, tweeting “Good to see my friend Prince Harry in London to discuss the work of our foundations & offer condolences to victims of the Manchester attack.”

It’s been thirteen months since Harry, William and Kate hosted Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama for a private dinner at the Palace.

The special evening – which followed lunch at Buckingham Palace with the Queen – was arranged by William on behalf of all three royals, and “they were delighted that were able to accept,” a palace source told PEOPLE at the time.

“The three of them have built up a relationship with the president and first lady over the years,” the source added.

Indeed they have. Kate and William first met the Obamas at Buckingham Palace in 2011 just after the royal wedding. It was their first joint engagement as a married couple.

In 2014, William visited the Oval Office, where he and then-President Obama discussed the campaign to clamp down on illegal wildlife trafficking.

Harry has his own special relationship with the Michelle. Last June, he hosted the First Lady and First Daughters Malia and Sasha – along with grandma Marian Robinson – for tea at Kensington Palace. Then in October, it was the the Obamas’ turn to play hosts to a visiting Harry, where the chemistry between Michelle and the royal was on adorable display.

The two reunited once again in May, when they teamed up in Orlando for Harry’s Invictus Games for veterans.

“I have to say that the most precious thing – if you haven’t already fallen in love – is to see him with his nephew,” Michelle told ABC News’ Robin Roberts of Harry after kicking off the Games.

William and Harry Award Young Heroes in Honor of Their Late Mom Princess Diana

Prince William and Prince Harry had a special task on Thursday – presenting young people from around the world with an award established in memory of their mother, Princess Diana.

Twenty young recipients traveled to St. James’s Palace to receive the Legacy Award set up by the Diana Award charity to recognize the “monumental impact” they have made on society.

Among the remarkable stories of social activism and selfless volunteering was that of Mercy Ngulube, 18, from Cardiff, Wales, “who has used her own personal painful experience of stigma and discrimination to drive her commitment and pursuit of equality for young people living with HIV,” the charity says. Mercy, who was born with HIV, has campaigned against the stigma of HIV and AIDS often anonymously by using “social media to counter and correct online misinformation about HIV and challenge negativity and ignorance.”

She is the current chairman of Children’s HIV Association Youth Committee that campaigns on behalf of young people living with HIV and met Harry in Durban at an international conference on HIV and AIDS.

From America, Jaylen Arnold, 16, was honored for his anti-bullying crusade and Faith Dickinson, 14, from Toronto, Canada, has an award for her Cuddles for Cancer blanket-making project.

One of the judges on the panel s Julia Samuel, Founder Patron of Child Bereavement UK and a friend Diana, who said she “was humbled by reading the extraordinary achievements of every young person who was nominated for this award.”

“The winners are truly inspirational — often coming from extremely difficult circumstances. It left me feeling profoundly hopeful for our future knowing these young people will be part of that future and our future leaders.”

Tessy Ojo, the Diana Award’s chief executive, added, “Today is about two things; celebrating young people for their selfless contribution to society, their courage and bravery, sometimes in the face of adversity and demonstrating to young people that we, as a collective, value them.”

In addition to meeting Diana’s sons at the palace, the winners will be able to access the Diana Award’s development program that helps enhance their skills in four key areas of leadership, community development, social entrepreneurship and technology for good.

The Diana Award runs programs from anti-bullying to encouraging mentoring which have received public support from William and Harry.

Harry Styles Opens Up About His Sexuality

Harry Styles has a new album out and along with it comes many, many interviews featuring many, many questions about his storied personal life.

While the former One Direction heartthrob, who just released his first solo album, the self-titled “Harry Styles,” doesn’t appear to want to chat about his former girlfriends (including Taylor Swift), he did recently offer his thoughts about Miley Cyrus identifying as pansexual and his own sexuality.

In an interview with The Sun’s Dan Wootton, Styles celebrated Cyrus’ openness about her sexuality.

“Being in a creative field, it’s important to be progressive,” he said. “People doing stuff like that is great.”

He added: “Everyone should just be who they want to be. It’s tough to justify somebody having to answer to someone else about stuff like that.”

As far as his own sexuality is concerned, Styles says he’s “never felt the need” to use a label.

“I don’t feel like it’s something I’ve ever felt like I have to explain about myself,” he told Wootton, before taking the stage in North London at his first-ever solo show.

This news probably won’t surprise diehard fans, some of whom believed he was in a secret relationship with band mate Louis Tomlinson and others who have been trying to pin down his exact sexuality for years.

In 2013, the 23-year-old singer addressed rumors that he was dating TV and radio host Nick Grimshaw in an interview with British GQ.

When asked point-blank if he identified as bisexual, Styles told the magazine, “Bisexual? Me? I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure I’m not.”

A year later Styles faced more rumors after appearing on “On Demand Entertainment” with band mate Liam Payne. When the pair was asked about their favorite traits in a woman, Payne responded, “Female, that’s a good trait.” Styles shot back, “Not that important” ― which, predictably, sent the internet into hysterics.

Regardless of how Styles does or doesn’t identify, his approach is as trendy as ever. A recent YouGov survey found 43 percent of respondents between the ages of 18 and 24 viewed themselves as something other than completely straight. What’s more, the poll found that “people of all generations now accept the idea that sexual orientation exists along a continuum rather than a binary choice,” with 60 percent of heterosexuals and 73 percent of gay people supporting this idea.

It’s Only Just Beginning (Again) For Harry Styles

Harry Styles has always wanted to stage-dive into a crowd.

Perhaps its a sign of the times that he just decided to go for it, at the tail end of an intimate iHeartRadio show at Rough Trade NYC ahead of his self-titled album’s Friday debut.

After the dive, it took Styles several minutes to emerge from the circle of fans that surrounded him to climb back over the barrier and onstage, leaving in his wake an epic story to be detailed and rehashed on Twitter, adding to the overwhelming narrative surrounding the musician days before his first solo release: Harry Styles is as big as ever, and he still knows how to surprise us — even when doing so means knocking into fans with his boots during that impromptu leap off the stage.

Some have been waiting to hear what Styles could do solo since his turn as a 16-year-old contestant on the British “X Factor” in 2010, where he met the four other young singers who would join him on a sky-high ascension as the boy band One Direction. “Sign of the Times,” the first single from Styles’ self-titled album, was a sweeping, decidedly un-boy-bandy statement on how he sounds when it’s just him.

A caveat that feels necessary: To praise Styles’ new sound is not to disparage his former group’s. Both this new guitar-heavy, occasionally Bowie-esque pop rock and the more danceable bubble-gum tunes that preceded it are worthy in their own right. (As are the One Direction men themselves; their 2011 acoustic version of “One Thing” should have been enough to convince you. Don’t @ me.)

Those who are surprised by Harry Styles’ stylings, or the deference he showed fans in his Rolling Stone cover story, or the fact that he wore a badge that said “treat people with kindness” during his “SNL” stint last month, shouldn’t be. There have been signposts along the way — his extremely pleasant tweets or the times he’s pointed out when something objectifies women, for example — that have hinted Styles was not your average pop superstar. Now that the spotlight’s on him, it’s easier to see than ever.

During the cozy iHeartRadio set on Monday, Styles performed for a small crowd of lucky fans. He admitted in a Q&A with Z100 host Maxwell, though, that he had been nervous about the kind of reception his solo efforts would get, and felt grateful for the positive reaction so far.

With his backing band to support him, Styles played “Ever Since New York,” which he had performed publicly only once before, on “SNL.” He told the crowd, who already knew the words by heart, that he’d written the tune just blocks away.

That song and one other, “Two Ghosts,” that he played for the first time in front of a crowd (“Well, I played it for my mum,” he clarified, “We played it for all our mums”) seem to speak of relationships gone sour. The uptempo “Carolina” hinges its chorus on Styles repeating “She’s a good girl!” while his bandmates chime in with boppy “la, la, la”s behind him.

After the stage dive, the show ended. The crowd mostly parted, with some fans sticking around in the hopes of snagging a selfie or other brief, validating connection with Styles on his way out of the venue. It would be an early day for him and his crew tomorrow on the “Today” show, where they’d be playing for several blocks of shouting fans on a brisk Manhattan morning. All in a day’s work for Styles, but still, in a way, just the beginning.

Tune in to your local iHeartRadio station, or Hot AC station, on Friday, May 12, at 7 p.m. for the broadcast of Harry Styles’ performance.

Prince Harry Reveals How Counseling Helped Him Cope With Diana’s Death

In a surprisingly candid interview, Britain’s Prince Harry has revealed his struggles in the wake of Princess Diana’s death in 1997.

The 32-year-old prince told The Telegraph that his way of dealing with his mother’s sudden death in a car accident in Paris was to simply shut down his emotions.

“I can safely say that losing my mum at the age of 12, and therefore shutting down all of my emotions for the last 20 years, has had a quite serious effect on not only my personal life but my work as well,” said Harry.

He added: “My way of dealing with it was sticking my head in the sand, refusing to ever think about my mum because why would that help? It’s only going to make you sad. It’s not going to bring her back.”

By the time he was in his 20s, Harry said he felt like he was going to explode.

“I have probably been very close to a complete breakdown on numerous occasions when all sorts of grief and sort of lies and misconceptions and everything are coming to you from every angle,” he said.

Harry spoke about his experiences as part of The Telegraph’s series of “Mad World” podcasts about how people grapple with mental health issues. The prince participated in order to battle the stigma surrounding opening up about personal problems and to encourage people to get help.

Harry and his brother and sister-in-law, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, have also set up the charity Heads Together to promote mental health.

Harry gained a reputation known as the wild brother, particularly after photos of his nude hijinks in a Las Vegas hotel room came to light in 2012. But now he’s involved in numerous charitable projects such as supporting the Invictus Games for wounded warriors, working to eliminate hidden land mines, encouraging HIV testing and helping to save elephants in Africa.

As for his emotional struggles, including two years of “total chaos,” Harry said he finally sought counseling at the age of 28 and started opening up about his feelings. He also said boxing lessons helped after he came very close to “punching someone.” Now, he’s in a “good place.”

Harry encouraged others to learn from his struggles.

“The experience I have had is that once you start talking about it, you realize that actually you’re part of quite a big club,” he said.

Watch Harry Styles’ Powerful Breakout Performance On ‘SNL’

Harry Styles the solo artist has arrived.

The former One Direction member hit Studio 8H this weekend to debut his first musical performance on “Saturday Night Live” hosted by Jimmy Fallon.

In a plaid suit and a stage showered in red light, Styles sang his breakout single, “Sign of the Times” and his fans fell in love all over again.

The singer split from One Direction more than a year ago and hadn’t released any new music until he debuted “Sign of the Times” and announced dates for his upcoming album earlier this month. He sang another song from his self-titled album during “SNL”: “Ever Since New York.”

Styles’ performance on Saturday was packed with emotion and proved that he is a force to be reckoned with, sans the rest of his former boy band.

Prince Harry Really Knows How To Rock A Casual Look

Like a fine wine, it appears Prince Harry just keeps getting better (and better dressed) with age.

Harry attended a mental health conference in London Thursday dressed sharply in a gray jacket, white button-front shirt and blue pants. It’s not necessarily a bold or fresh new look, but he definitely wears it well.

Just look at the fit on this thing.

Harry met with former armed services members and one particularly adorable assistance dog, who made us realize for the first time ever that Harry is basically a human golden retriever: handsome, eager and slightly red-headed.

We’re not implying that girlfriend Meghan Markle dressed him for the occasion, but she does star on a show called “Suits.” Just saying.

‘Harry Potter’ Actor Jim Tavaré Breaks Neck In Horrific Head-On Car Crash

Harry Potter” actor Jim Tavaré, best known for his role as the Leaky Cauldron innkeeper and the franchise’s resident hunchback, is recovering in intensive care after a serious car crash.

Tavaré, whose character first appeared in “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” was involved in a head-on collision Monday that left him with a broken neck, 15 broken ribs, a punctured lung, a broken leg and fractured breastbones, according to an update on his Facebook page. No further details about where the accident occurred were released.

His wife Laura broke the news of the accident on Facebook with a photo of a bruised Tavaré in the ICU lying in a hospital bed giving a thumbs up.

“This is Laura here,” she wrote in the photo caption. “Now that his family have been informed, Jim has asked me to let you all know that he was involved in a serious car accident yesterday, a head on collision. He’s currently in ICU intensive care.”

“He’s had 2 blood transfusions so far and is about to go in for his first surgery. This is for real, not a movie role,” she continued. “Please hold some good thoughts for him as he fights his way out of this.”

Apart from the “Harry Potter” franchise, the 54-year-old British actor, who lives in Los Angeles, is also a comedian who co-wrote and starred on the BAFTA-winning TV series “The Sketch Show.”

Let’s raise a glass of firewhisky to a speedy recovery.

Emma Watson came to set prepared while filming Harry Potter — maybe a little too prepared.

The Beauty and the Beast actress, 26, stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday where she couldn’t help but cringe while watching an outtake clip from her early days on Harry Potter.

In the clip, Watson is seen mouthing Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint‘s lines during a take from Sorcerer’s Stone.

“This is actually quite traumatic for me,” she said as she burrowed her face in her hands. “I would ruin takes.”

She said she would learn everyone’s lines in a scene and accidentally catch herself saying their lines under her breath.

“ Chris  would be like, ‘Cut! Emma, you’re doing it again,’ ” Watson recalled. “I couldn’t help myself. I was such a loser.”

Watson said she was so was so obsessed with the Harry Potter growing up, that she inadvertently memorized nearly every line from the books.

“I really love those books,” she said. “I really wanted to do my job well and I kind of over did it.”

Shepard Fairey and Debbie Harry Join Forces for Obey

Two of pop culture’s intrepid forces — Shepard Fairey and Blondie’s Debbie Harry are polishing up a collaboration for the artist’s Obey clothing label next fall.
Forty years to the day that Blondie made its debut at CBGB’s in the East Village, the draw for her indelible style remains intact. Fairey has described Blondie as one of his all-time favorite bands since he discovered them as a kid on pop radio. That interest only intensified as he got into punk and learned more about Blondie’s evolution from the CBGB’s scene with bands like The Ramones, and Talking Heads. Along with always appreciating Blondie’s “stylistic diversity, tackling genres such as rock, girl group, soul, disco, hip-hop and reggae, Fairey has described Harry as “an amazing vocalist, lyricist, style icon, beauty and embodiment of NYC cool.”
“Really excited” about what’s in store for the upcoming Harry-infused special-edition women’s line, Fairey said late last week, “I’ve been a Blondie fan my whole life and have collaborated with them in the past, which has been a dream come true. But working with Debbie on this project has been totally inspiring,” Fairey said. “She’s been very involved and hands-on for the whole process, just another display of her

The First Photo Of Prince Harry With Meghan Markle Is Here, And It’s Adorable

You’ve seen the Instagram posts, spotted the friendship bracelets and read Prince Harry’s noble defense of his girlfriend.

Now, at last, you can see first photos of the prince and “Suits” actress Meghan Markle together in public for the first time.

The Sun snapped the couple braving the brisk British weather in beanies on Wednesday evening, as they headed for the play “The Curious Incident of the Dog at the Nighttime” at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End.

The 32-year-old prince and Markle, 35, appeared relaxed as they walked “hand in hand.” And they didn’t care much that someone was photographing them, according to the British tabloid.

The lovebirds even shopped for a Christmas tree together, The Sun reports.

Markle is reportedly staying with Harry at his two-bedroom Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace.

The actress flew from her home in Toronto to London on Sunday to see her prince charming. The two are also planning a getaway vacation.

They’ve reportedly been dating for about five months after meeting in May in Canada, where Harry was promoting the Invictus Games, the athletic competition he founded for injured military vets.

At first, they kept it relatively quiet, though both were spotted wearing the same blue-beaded bracelet. Markle posted a few shots of herself with the wrist bauble on Instagram.

And then there was this:

In November, Harry warned the press to stop harassing “his girlfriend,” who’s been stalked by paparazzi, citing safety concerns. The prince was “deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her,” according to a statement from Kensington Palace. The statement also called out the “outright sexism and racism of social media trolls.”

This is why Harry is our favorite prince.

Origins of the National Security State and the Legacy of Harry S. Truman

Origins of the National Security State and the Legacy of Harry S. Truman

The Cold War profoundly transformed American society, perhaps most significantly through the development of national security institutions that are very much alive more than two decades after the end of the Cold War. This volume explores the great divide between those in the Truman administration who defended tradition and those who spoke for the new ideology of national security. In a highly charged political environment that pitted not only Republican against Democrat, but also civilian authority against military authority and the legislative branch against the executive, Americans struggled to adapt to a new world order while retaining ideals of freedom and individuality. At issue were basic questions about the nation’s postwar purpose and political identity, the role of the military in civilian life, and even the rights of the individual versus the rights of the state.
