What healthy habits do couples who attend therapy practice? Below, eight tips from married folks who swear by marriage therapy. 

1. Recognize when you’re telling a “story.”

“The first time we went to therapy as an engaged couple, I perched on the couch and eagerly told my side of events in one fell swoop. Then I sat back and waited for the therapist to respond, which basically just meant I wanted her to side with me. Sometimes we tell ourselves stories that may or may not be accurate because we want things to be or sound a certain way. We want to be viewed as the main character (aka the most important one). The thing is, in a healthy relationship, both people are equally important and both sides of a story matter. These days, I try really hard to notice when I’m building a narrative and make sure it aligns with what’s real. I recognize that my husband’s ‘story’ may be as legitimate as my own.” ― Julia Dellitt, a writer, editor and yoga teacher

2. Listen more than you talk. 

“I am a talker. Therapy has taught me and my husband to listen more than talk. Active listening helps us to feel heard and understood. This is a practice we use everyday. We strive to listen, be attentive and validate feelings. After we both settle down we are able to work on the root issues and make a plan. 3. Create couple time, even if it means waking up earlier.

“Through [going to therapy with my wife], I’ve learned that date nights and scheduled time together creates structure and improves emotional engagement. More importantly, it builds a sense of togetherness. One of my favorites? Wake up ten minutes early in the morning to connect ― cuddle with each other. Whether it leads to sex or not, the morning sets an atmosphere for a loving day.” ― Moshe Ratson, a marriage and family therapist in New York City 

4. Don’t assume you know everything about your partner.

“My husband and I have been together five years now and sometimes it’s tempting to assume I know everything there is to know about him ― which isn’t true ― especially when it comes to conflict. I remember going to therapy once and thinking, ‘Oh, this is what he’s going to say and I bet he wants to handle it this way.’ Then the conversation started and I realized I was way off, because he is his own person with his own thoughts and feelings. Remember to be open minded and give your partner space to be a nuanced individual, for better or worse.” ― Julia Dellitt

5. Give up the right to be right. 

“I feel I am usually right, although I sometimes let my husband think he is. While the truth is probably somewhere in the middle of us, we have learned not to allow the need to assert our ‘rightness’ get in the way of loving each other. Who cares who is right?” ―Mikki Bey Crawford

6. Call a timeout if things are getting too intense. 

“This is a ground rule to avoid escalation. If for whatever reason a discussion or disagreement escalates to a high degree and you feel overwhelmed, you have the right to ask for a ‘timeout.’ Feel free to say, ‘this isn’t a good time, I feel overwhelmed and need a break.’ But be sure to reschedule time to talk about the subject within 24-48 hours.”  ― Moshe Ratson

7. You can be honest now or honest later but eventually, you have to tell the truth if you want to move on.

“I’m a people-pleaser at heart, so in relationships I frequently feel the need to hide information. Why? I want everyone to like me. I quickly learned in therapy there’s no other path forward but an honest one. You’re actually wasting time and money if you show up to a counseling session without being willing to share your truth. There’s no need to be bluntly honest 24/7, but when you’re having an issue with the person you love, it’s better to deal with it sooner or later. Addressing the problem immediately in a compassionate way, rather than procrastinating a conversation, is the fastest way to start getting back on track.”― Julia Dellitt

8. When all else fails, give each other hug or a kiss.

Can a dying patient be a healthy person?

The news was bad. Mimi, a woman in her early 80s, had been undergoing treatment for lymphoma. Her husband was being treated for bladder cancer. Recently, she developed chest pain, and a biopsy showed that she had developed a secondary tumor of the pleura, the space around one of her lungs. Her oncology team’s mission was to share this bad news.

Mimi’s case was far from unique. Each year in the U.S., over 1.6 million patients receive hospice care, a number that has been increasing rapidly over the past few years. What made Mimi’s case remarkable was not the grimness of her prognosis but her reaction to it.

When the members of the team walked into Mimi’s hospital room, she was lying in bed holding hands with her husband, who was perched beside her on his motorized wheelchair. The attending oncologist gulped, took a deep breath, and began to break the news as gently as he could. Expecting to meet a flood of tears, he finished by expressing how sorry he was.

To the team’s surprise, however, no tears flowed. Instead Mimi looked over at her husband with a broad smile and said, “Do you know what day this is?” Somewhat perplexed, the oncologist had to admit that he did not. “Today is very is special,” said Mimi, “because it was 60 years ago this very day that my Jim and I were married.”

The team members reacted to Mimi with astonishment. How could an elderly woman with an ailing husband who had just been told that she had a second, lethal cancer respond with a smile? Compounding the team’s amazement, she then went on to share how grateful she felt for the life she and her husband had shared.

Mimi thanked the attending oncologist and the members of the team for their care, remarking how difficult it must be to deliver bad news to very sick patients. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, Mimi was expressing sympathy for the people caring for her, exhibiting a remarkable generosity of spirit in the face of a grim disease.

The members of the team walked out of Mimi’s room shaking their heads in amazement. Once they reached the hallway, the attending physician turned and addressed the group: “Mimi isn’t the only person in that room with cancer, but she is surely the sickest. And yet,” he continued, to nods all around, “she is also the healthiest of any of us.”

Disease need not define us

Mimi’s reaction highlights a distinction between disease and illness, the importance of which is becoming increasingly apparent. Simply put, a body has a disease, but only a person can have an illness. Different people can respond very differently to the same diagnosis, and those differences sometimes correspond to demographic categories, such as male or female. Mimi is a beautiful example of the ability to respond with joy and gratitude in the face of even life’s seemingly darkest moments.

Consider another very different patient the cancer team met with shortly after Mimi. Ron, a man in his 40s who had been cured of lymphoma, arrived in the oncology clinic expecting the attending oncologist to sign a form stating that he could not work and therefore qualified for disability payments. So far as the attending knew, there was no reason Ron couldn’t hold a job.

Ron’s experience of disease was very different from Mimi’s, a phenomenon familiar to cancer physicians. Despite a dire prognosis, Mimi was full of gratitude. Ron, by contrast, though cured of his disease and apparently completely healthy, looked at his life with resentment, even anger. He felt deeply wronged by his bout with cancer and operated with a sense that others should do what they could to help make it up to him.

Mimi was dying but content with her life. Ron was healthy but filled with bitterness. Both patients had the same diagnosis – cancer – but the two human beings differed dramatically, and so too did their illness experiences. Mimi felt blessed by 60 years of a good marriage, while Ron saw in his cancer just one more example of how unfair life had been to him.

The real meaning of health

When the members of the cancer team agreed that Mimi was the healthiest person in the room, they were thinking of health in terms of wholeness or integrity. In fact, the word health shares the same source as the word whole, implying completeness or fullness. Ron felt repeatedly slighted, but Mimi looked at life from a perspective of abundance.

A full life is not necessarily marked by material wealth, power over others, or fame. Many people who live richly do so modestly and quietly, never amassing fortunes, commanding legions, or seeing their picture in the newspaper. What enriches their lives is not success in the conventional sense but the knowledge that they have done their best to remain focused on what really matters.

Mimi easily called to mind many moments when she and those she cared about shared their company and their love. Any sense of regret or sorrow over what might have been quickly gave way to a sense of gratitude for what really was, still is, and will be. Her outlook on life was shaped by a deep conviction that it had a meaning that would transcend her own death.

When someone has built up a life ledger full of meaningful experiences, the prospect of serious illness and death often do not seem so threatening. For Mimi, who had lived most of her days with a keen awareness that they would not go on forever, death’s meaning had been transformed from “Life is pointless” to “Make every day count.”

Mimi regarded the prospect of dying as a lens through which to view the meaning of life. She saw her illness as another adventure through which she and Jim would pass. Death would separate them, but it would also draw them closer together, enabling them to see more clearly than ever how much their love meant to them.

From Mimi’s point of view, death is not a contaminant, fatally introduced to life at its final stage. Instead death is a fire that burns away all that is not essential, purifying a person’s vision of what is most real and most worth caring about. Though not happy to be ill, Mimi was in a profound sense grateful for death. Her sentiments echo those of the poet John Donne:

“One short sleep past and we wake eternally:
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.”

Take time to reflect on connection.

On Tuesday, I parked my car in the SAS Health Care Center lot and before I even made it to my office door I already received three reminders of why it’s so great to work at SAS.

Taking care of business

A mother carrying a squirming toddler called out to me from the sidewalk. “Thank goodness for the Health Care Center! My nurse practitioner just checked Charlie’s rash and cleared him for child care. I can go to work!”

Parents want to make sound decisions about whether they should be at home or at work, and if their child should or shouldn’t attend child care or school. SAS flexible work environment, including unlimited sick days, certainly supports employees being home with sick kids. And, our free onsite Health Care Center makes it quick and easy to find out how sick a child actually is. With onsite infant and toddler child care centers and a busy SAS preschool, what a relief to working parents to be able to get quick peace of mind!

No copays, coinsurance or other charges for HCC visits really add up, too. Last year, SAS employees saved $ 1.28 M in avoided co-pays and coinsurance by using the free on-site HCC. That’s in addition to SAS’ health plan savings of $ 3,946,684 for the 40,534 visits made by employees and family members. Good health is good business.

Balancing is not an act

I waved to a Work/Life staff member entering the department’s front door on the other side of the Health Care Center complex. What would we do without our talented group of social workers? With easy access to experts on school issues and child development, college prep and entrance and–on the other end of the spectrum–long term care, home health and hospice, I know from personal experience that the comfort of Work/Life ‘having your back’ allows employees to concentrate at work and be as productive as possible.

Just add water

I decided to take a quick detour by the HCC Pharmacy on the way to my office. It was bustling as usual (although the wait continues to average less than 5 minutes!). Two employees seated side-by-side greeted me by name. One was obviously in distress, her forehead wrinkled, eyes squinting from the overhead lights.

“What can I do to help?” I asked.

“Oh, I’m just waiting to get my migraine medicine. I didn’t realize I was out and this darn thing started this morning, so I came right over. They said they’d have it right out to me.”

“How about a glass of water so she can take one as soon as she gets it?” asked her companion, who had obviously driven her over from another part of SAS campus.

I walked across the hall to an exam room for a plastic cup of water. And, in the 60 seconds it took me to return, she had her prescription in hand. The onsite HCC Pharmacy is almost three years old now, and we knew from the beginning it would add convenience and cost savings – and like today, another layer of compassion–to the average SAS work day.

I made it

Reaching my office door, it hit me (as it often does) even after 23 years at SAS, that we continually seek to do the right things. Onsite health care saves millions of dollars each year and makes a tremendous amount of sense each day. It may have been just a typical day at SAS, but I knew it was still special. Oh, and did I mention that it was only Tuesday?

Game Day at the RFC! Employees are invited to take a break from their day to come and play a little, then return to their offices energized for the afternoon! My Mother’s Best Advice: 7 Ways to Create a Happy, Healthy Life

My mother shaped the woman I would become, the family I would create and the business I would build. She taught me to find my passion; ask “Why not?”; make mistakes; and nurture the mind-body-spirit connection. In this month that celebrates motherhood, I’d like to share some of my mother’s best advice.

Find your passion:
My mother introduced me to dance at the age of 2. I was pigeon-toed and the doctor prescribed dance classes along with corrective shoes. I discovered very early that dance was my passion and would become my life’s work. My mother recognized my talent and devoted herself to nurturing it. She took me to weekly classes in our very small town of Red Oak, Iowa. She also drove me 100 miles roundtrip two times each week to a professional dance studio in Omaha, Nebraska. Without her I may never have realized my passion for dance and the role it would play in my life.

Don’t accept limitations:
My mother earned an associate’s degree in business with a concentration in accounting, something uncommon for a woman in the 1930s. She was liberated before her time. When our town’s only dance teacher moved away my mother went to Omaha and recruited another teacher to take her place. She set up a business for her by finding a place for her to teach, doing her accounting, producing recitals, sewing costumes, and doing local marketing to bring in students.

When I was 11, I started my own dance studio in our remodeled basement. My mother once again went to work, this time helping her daughter set up and manage the business. Within three months I had 100 students. Though we didn’t realize it at the time, she had given me the business model that I would use to build Jazzercise.

Believe you can:
When I graduated from college and decided to start my own dance fitness business in Chicago it felt like second nature. I had watched my mother do it. I knew the model worked. I knew I could develop a program that would help women achieve their fitness goals, build their own businesses, support one another, and feel good doing it. She taught me to be an entrepreneur.

Let “Why not?” be your mantra:
I watched my mother tackle problems and create solutions on the fly. To give her daughter the opportunity to dance my mother inadvertently became an entrepreneur. She didn’t have a “plan” and didn’t let that stop her. She didn’t indulge in self doubt. She just kept moving forward. She believed in herself and she believed in me. That confidence took root. It gave me faith in myself and others.

Encourage accountability:
My mother never pushed me to dance. She told me explicitly that if it wasn’t what I wanted to do then I could stop and do something else. Knowing I had the freedom to take a different path made it easier to keep going. But she made sure I practiced, and she even practiced with me. She believed in the importance of working hard to refine talent rather than relying on it.

Make mistakes:
My mother showed me the importance of giving children the space to make their own choices — good and bad. When I tested her, there were consequences, but she let me be in charge of my decisions. It’s difficult to see your child fail, get hurt or make mistakes, but that’s usually how they learn to be their best selves. Protecting them from consequences takes away their ability to handle adversity as well as their dignity.

Connect the mind, body and spirit:
This is one of my mother’s best lessons. Nurture your mind through education, working and surrounding yourself with people who challenge you in a positive way. Feed your spirit with meditation, spontaneity, doing what you love, being of service, and giving to others. Take care of your body with exercise, healthy eating and sleep. Strengthen your body so it can maintain the connection.

My mother, June Nelson Sheppard, taught me that as a person, a parent and a businesswoman all you can do is your best. And if you do it right, it can be fun! I’m proud to pass on my mother’s legacy to my daughter, son and granddaughters, and now to you. Let’s take a moment to honor mothers in all their many forms. I wish your family a very happy Mother’s Day!
