It’s been a long time coming, but Borderlands 3 is officially set to launch on September 13 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The game will see the return of many characters from the previous installments (including Tales from the Borderlands) like Lilith, Mordecai, Brick, Tiny Tina, Moxxi, Claptrap, Vaughn, Rhys, and more. Looking for a Retro Mini Console? Here’s Where to Find Them

If you buy something through this post, IGN may get a share of the sale. For more, read our Terms of Use.

Plug and play retro consoles have come a long way. We still have the simple consoles with the composite video cables you can buy pretty much anywhere, but the NES Classic introduced a whole new class or boutique, collector-quality retro consoles that output through an HDMI cable. The fact the original mini, the NES Classic, was so hard to find for so long, and eventually inspired a second, much more plentiful run, shows there is enormous demand for these.

The adorable mini Super NES and NES aren’t hard to come by anymore, and the PlayStation Classic can still be picked up at some retailers. The very cool C64 Mini is the first competent retro all-in-one computer console, and it just came out and can be scooped up, too, so you can finally see how those C64 games look in crisp, digital HDMI output.

We Played 2 Hours of Red Dead Redemption 2 – Here’s What Happened

As I trotted across the prairieland of New Hanover on my well-groomed steed, Mahogany Boy (named due to a tragic misread of his breed, the Mahogany Bay), I heard the dull rattle of a freight train. I yanked the reins, hit X a few times to shift gears into a gallop, and streaked toward the tracks, just as the steam locomotive rounded a corner into view. I had an idea.

As I took up a trajectory with the train, I heard a shout over the growing noise – bounty hunters sent to collect me, dead not alive. It was a fair cop: I’d recently threatened a passing wagoner, stolen his cart and rode it off a cliff to see what happens (you die). As the engine streaked past and I swung the camera to get a look at my pursuers, a button prompt appeared in the bottom-right corner of the screen: “Jump on train”.

Here’s What The First ‘Harry Potter’ Book Looks Like Around The World

In its 20 years on this planet Earth, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone — or Philosopher’s, if you’re British — has been officially translated into 68 languages (and unofficially even more than that).

Naturally, some aspects of J.K. Rowling’s characters and plot require a bit of finessing so they make sense in languages other than her native English. The verbal clues that help readers imagine the school houses of Slytherin and Ravenclaw, for example, turn into “Serpentard” and “Serrdaigle” (roughly “snake” and “eagle talon”) in French. In German, “The Mirror of Erised” becomes “Der Spiegel Nerhegeb” — “nerhegeb” being the German word for “desire” spelled backwards.

Character names aren’t safe from alteration in translation, either. Buckbeak the Hippogriff becomes “Hardodziób,” roughly meaning “haughty beak,” in Poland. In Iceland, Crookshanks the cat becomes “Skakklappi,” or “crook-legged.” The wayward owl Pigwidgeon simply is “Kvík” in Slovak, or “squeak.”

Rowling’s affinity for puns requires some smart work on the part of the translator, as well; in a recent discussion over whether Ron Weasley and Lavender Brown ever had sex on the “Harry Potter” sub-Reddit board, users mused over the differences in translation over a scene during Divination class. After Lavender realizes she’s found Uranus, Ron requests whether he can “see Uranus, too.” Oh, ho, ho — but for readers in other languages to get the joke, the pun had to be altered somewhat, from “Uranus” to simply a “heavenly body” (that Ron would like to see, too). Ten points to the translator who had to finesse that one.

The text isn’t the only thing that has changed as the story of “Harry Potter” traveled from country to country. Various publishers chose to stray from the American cover illustrated by Mary GrandPré or the U.K. version created by Thomas Taylor, while others did not. Here are 21 magical covers from the first “Harry Potter” book that stole our hearts.

Here’s What The Beatles’ Best Album Would Look Like In 2017

Shirley Temple. Marilyn Monroe. Karl Marx. Edgar Allen Poe.

These were just a few of the famous people The Beatles chose to include on the cover of their album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” which celebrates a 50th anniversary Thursday.

After Paul McCartney proposed having a group of recognizable faces on the band’s cover, each Beatle suggested celebrities to include. Not every choice made the list ― such as John Lennon’s desire to have Adolf Hitler and Jesus ― but many dozen people from varying backgrounds had their 2-D likenesses grace the space surrounding The Beatles.

Now, 50 years later, it’s difficult to imagine that so many different celebrities could seem representative for the culture of the day. In 2017, one person dominates the conversation.

If The Beatles continued to wear yellow, pink, blue and red, the contemporary backdrop surrounding them would surely be orange.

A recent report from Harvard Kennedy School’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy claimed that Donald Trump has dominated the 2017 news at an unprecedented level.

“President Trump dominated media coverage in the outlets and programs analyzed, with Trump being the topic of 41 percent of all news stories—three times the amount of coverage received by previous presidents,” said the report, which focused on major American newspapers, television channels and a few international outlets.

As New York Times reporter Farhad Manjoo wrote in February, after he tried to actively avoid consuming Trump news and ultimately failed, “I could find almost no Trump-free part of the press.”

Trump has even dominated the coverage in publications that traditionally focus on pop culture ― a sign the current president has fully consumed other celebrities whole. The publication Digiday ran a story in April with the headline, “’Politics is pop culture news’: In the Trump era, political news is everyone’s beat.”

Sure, Beyoncé or Drake or Jennifer Lawrence or LeBron James can still become the subjects of a huge news story. But these days, the next Trump mishap or scandal or tweet that everyone wants to talk about is mere hours away.

You’re not just living in Trump’s America because he’s president, but because all conversations now lead back to him.

As such, HuffPost illustrator Damon Dahlen reimagined the cover art from The Beatles best album to reflect our new reality. Trump is not just a famous person of the day’s news, he is the day’s news. Every single day.

Dahlen had incredible attention to detail and you can find Trump’s face in even the tiniest of bodies featured within the original. It’s truly a nightmare-inducing masterpiece.

Perhaps this is a bit askew from The Beatles’ original vision. The living Beatles, Paul and Ringo Starr, have each subtly expressed that they’re anti-Trump in their own ways, but their original album art was barely a political statement. Still, separating music from the omnipresence of Trump in this age is impossible. When listening even to music from the past, Trump is still on your brain, or about to be.

A recent Paris Review article about this phenomenon concluded by quoting the music critic Greil Marcus. A fan had asked on the critic’s website, “What are the key issues for music criticism in 2017?” Here’s Marcus’ response:

I can’t speak for anyone but myself. For me, what’s crucial is not to write about music, or anything else, without a sense of tyranny surrounding any attempt at communication, expression, or free speech of any sort.

“Sgt. Pepper’s” ends with the song “A Day in the Life,” which lyrically begins with Lennon singing, “I read the news today, oh boy.”

In 2017, this line would undoubtedly refer to Trump. Every single day.

Here’s What You Need To Know About Duchess Kate’s Topless Photo Lawsuit

A court trial regarding a 2012 series of topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge finally began on Tuesday in France, The Telegraph reports.

At the time the photos were taken, Prince William and the Duchess (formerly known as Kate Middleton) were on vacation in Provence, France. The images ran in the French publication Closer, and were met immediately with disdain from the palace.

“Their Royal Highnesses have been hugely saddened to learn that a French publication and a photographer have invaded their privacy in such a grotesque and totally unjustifiable manner,” a statement from the palace read. The statement also called the incident a reminder of the 1997 death of Princess Diana, reminding her family of “the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting for the duke and duchess for being so.”

The royal family threatened legal action in 2012. Now six people, including three photographers, are being questioned in France in connection with the images and their distribution.

According to The Telegraph, a written statement from William was read by the family’s lawyer in French, and it called the photos shocking and unexpected. “We know France and the French and we know that they are, in principle, respectful of private life, including that of their guests,” he said.

He also reiterated that the situation reminded him of what Diana dealt with in her own life. The pair is seeking 1.5 million euros, or a little over 1.6 million U.S. dollars in the suit.

At the time the photos were released, Closer’s editor defended its decision to publish the photos, stating that “ these are pictures that are full of joy. The pictures are not degrading.”

We’ll have to wait and see what the court has to say about that.

Here’s What Dustin Hoffman Has To Say About Famous ‘I’m Walkin’ Here!’ Line

Dustin Hoffman and filmmaker Noah Baumbach met up at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival Monday to discuss the latter’s career and throw in some tidbits about their upcoming film, “The Meyerowitz Stories.” But, inevitably, some flashbacks to the actor’s time on camera snuck in.

During a Q&A session at the end of their conversation, an audience member told Hoffman that he was a big fan of the actor’s iconic “I’m walkin’ here!” scene alongside Jon Voight in 1969’s “Midnight Cowboy.” A quick refresher: Voight and Hoffman are crossing a New York City street when a cab nearly hits the actors. Hoffman delivers his famous line and serves up a few choice knocks on the cab’s hood.

The best part? It was all a result of Hoffman’s quick thinking.

During the Tribeca Talk, Hoffman explained that he and Voight were doing many takes of the scene, trying to time it just right so they wouldn’t have to wait for a light at the crosswalk.

“We finally get it at the — whatever it is — 50th take, and we’re so happy, we can feel it, at this point in the dialogue, Jon and I. We’re at the corner, and it turns green, and we’re able to keep walking, and a fucking cab has hit us,” Hoffman explained, pausing for the crowd’s laughter.

“The truth is, this is the way the brain works: What was in my head was, ‘We’re makin’ a movie here!’ And then just as I’m about to say that, I realize, ‘Oh, you can’t do that,’ the brain changes it to, ‘I’m walkin’ here!’ What was really being said, for me, was, ‘We’re shooting here!’”

And thus movie history — and the enduring indifference of New York taxicabs — was solidified.

Here’s Why Queen Elizabeth II Has Two Birthdays Every Year

We all have that one friend who loves their birthday so much, they manage to extend it into a birth-week each year. As it turns out, Queen Elizabeth II is one of those friends. Kind of.

The queen has not one, but two birthday celebrations every year. The first is her real birthday (April 21) and the second is her “official birthday,” held each year in June. While the exact date varies, the celebration is held on a Saturday and coincides with the Trooping the Colour. You may have thought that 2016’s seemingly endless celebration was only in honor of her milestone 90th birthday, but she actually celebrates it more than once every year.

But why? The reason is kind of hilarious, and so British.

Best-selling royal author Robert Jobson, who has chronicled the royal family for 25 years, told The Huffington Post that the tradition goes way back to 1748, in the time of King George II. “George was born in November, and felt the weather would be too cold at that time of year for his annual birthday parade,” he said. “So instead, he combined his birthday celebration with an annual spring military parade known as Trooping the Colour, in which regiments displayed their flags or ‘colours’ so soldiers would be familiar with them.”

In other words, the queen has two birthdays because of Britain’s notoriously unpredictable weather

Trooping the Colour, which will be held on June 17 this year, is a public affair. The royal family famously makes an appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace during the ceremony, to the delight of royal enthusiasts everywhere. But the queen’s actual birthday, April 21, is celebrated with much less fanfare, according to Victoria Arbiter, royal correspondent for CNN.

“The queen is not one for fuss and so birthdays are generally marked quietly and privately,” Arbiter told The Huffington Post. “For the milestone birthdays such as her 90th last year the whole family will come together for a special dinner, but by and large the queen prefers a low-key affair.”

Knowing how much the queen loves cake, we presume there is one involved in the celebration.

Arbiter explained that while it’s not required for the queen to have two birthday celebrations, “It is tradition. And if there is anything for which the royal family is most famous, it’s tradition.”

Leave it to the queen to prioritize a tradition that involves more parties. Now that’s our kind of monarch. Happy 91st birthday, Queen Elizabeth II!

Check out some photos of the queen celebrating both of her birthdays below.

Here’s What Demi Lovato Does When She Has ‘Bad Body Image Issue Days’

Demi Lovato is a body positive hero, even when she’s having an off day.

The mental health advocate and constant truth-teller delivered some words of self-love wisdom on Twitter Tuesday. Lovato, who has been open about her struggles with anorexia and bulimia, wrote that whenever she is having a bad body image day, she gives herself an eye-opening reminder.

“I’d rather live in freedom from my eating disorder than worry about what people think about my body,” she wrote. “I am more than a number and a jean size. Fuck yeah!”

Yeah is right. Having a bad day is totally normal, but it’s so easy to lose sight of the fact that things could be much worse. You don’t need to have struggled with an eating disorder to appreciate the fact that your health and happiness mean so much more than what other people think about you.

Lovato constantly uses her platform to remind us that we’re perfect as is. Just a few days earlier, following the release of Kendrick Lamar’s polarizing ode to stretch marks, she celebrated being “totally cool with” her own.

BRB, bookmarking Lovato’s Twitter feed for the next time we need a refresher in what honest self-love looks like.

Couples Were Asked If They’d Have A Threesome. Here’s What They Said

Like anything sex-related, you’ll never know if your partner is into threesomes unless you ask.

In the video above, the team over at WatchCut got the conversation started, asking couples if they’d ever be down to share their partner in bed. Some of the pairs have already done it.

“We don’t do it with people we know,” one boyfriend explains. “No kissing! And no spending the night ― [it’s] a one and done kind of deal.”

Some couples aren’t exactly on the same page.

“My wife is for me; I don’t want to share or be part of somebody else’s fantasy,” one husband says. “I’m just not that into that.”

His wife, on the other hand, seems a bit curious about the possibility.

“I don’t know about now but I probably would have before?” she says. “I don’t know! I’d definitely have to be drunk.”

Here’s A Toad Wearing A Top Hat, Because What Else Do You Have Going On?

Chris Newsome, a 43-year-old from Alabama, knows how to make an amphibian feel fancy.

This past summer, a toad took up residence in Newsome’s flowerbed and would visit his porch every night.

Not only did Newsome decide to give his guest a proper name — Mr. Toad — he also decided to start making hats for the little critter in the hopes of making another small fry happy.

“I made hats to cheer up a friend’s son after his pet toad died,” Newsome told The Huffington Post. “He asked if my porch toad was still around, so I put some pictures of the toad with hats on Facebook to make him laugh.”

Newsome fashioned the hats out of foam paper, which he said seemed like “toad-friendly material.”

They’re also pretty small — perfect for a toad, but quite silly-looking on Newsome’s dog, Daisy, who is wearing the hat below for scale:

Newsome also told HuffPost that it seemed Mr. Toad wasn’t bothered by modeling the hats, either.

“Even after many hats and pictures, he still returned,” Newsome said. “Either he liked the hats or he couldn’t be fazed.”

Recently, Newsome decided to post the pictures of Mr. Toad working it in his fab hats on Reddit and the pictures soon went viral, receiving more than 1.1 million views.

“Hopefully, it or another toad will visit once the weather warms up,” Newsome said.

Here’s hopping that happens!

Here’s Why Donald Trump Won’t Be Watching The Oscars

President Donald Trump likely won’t be watching the Academy Awards on Sunday night because, duh.

But we’ll let White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer share the official reason why:

I think Hollywood is known for being rather far to the left in its opinions, and I’ve got to be honest with you, I think the president will be hosting the Governors’ Ball that night. Mrs. Trump looks forward to putting on a phenomenal event. And the first lady’s put a lot of time into this event, in welcoming our nation’s governors to the capital, and I have a feeling that’s where the president and first lady are going to be focused on Sunday night.

The former reality star has fired up feuds with the likes of Meryl Streep (who’s nominated) and has also gotten roasted at previous award shows, so he probably isn’t feeling chummy with show business right about now. Plus, given the anti-administration yuks that will likely spill forth at the Oscars, perhaps Trump wants to spare his ego.

While he may not tune in, we have a sneaking suspicion that the commander-in-chief won’t tune out what transpires on Oscar night. Got that, Twitter?

He apparently hasn’t been such a fan of the ceremony anyway, tweeting in 2014 that it was “amateur night” and “bullshit.” In 2015, he issued this politicized critique:

Chance The Rapper Took Us To Church Last Night. Here’s Why That Matters.

Chance the Rapper thanked God like a trillion times in his acceptance speech for Best New Artist at Sunday night’s Grammys. Then he took the Grammys to church with a passionate, gospel-filled performance that featured a poppin’ choir, Kirk Franklin, and Tamela Mann. It was a rousing, meaningful on-stage moment for the 23-year-old Chicago rapper, who won his first three Grammy awards that evening with no record sales.

Performing a medley of “How Great,” “All We Got” and “No Problem” from his groundbreaking album “Coloring Book,” Chance was playing no games. The show was slowly creeping into its third hour, but the rapper was was not only brimming with energy, he was demanding it of the audience, too.

“Hey y’all better stand up right now, stop playing,” he bellowed halfway through the performance. “I’m talking about God!”

The story of black people and God, or at least the Christian God, is obviously fraught. It was the Bible and Christianity that were ostensibly used to as tools towards the enslavement and colonization of Africans. But it was the same Bible, the same God, that stood at the center of so many spiritual and political movements that helped black people become free. It’s complicated.

What’s not complicated, though, is the intrinsic connection between the black Church and black music. So many black musical greats, from Stevie Wonder to Whitney Houston, found their voice and honed their talent singing gospel music on Sundays. Those threads have have often found their way into secular music, both subtly and blatantly. Chance’s Sunday night performance was a powerful reminder and homage to the role that gospel has always played in the black music that shapes popular culture.

Bringing the likes of Kirk Franklin and the legendary Tamela Mann onstage with him on what was likely the biggest night of his career thus far sent a huge message. It was a tipping of the hat, a moment of celebration and recognition of a part of black culture that rarely gets its props in the mainstream.

‘1984’ Sales Have Skyrocketed. Here’s What To Read Next.

Last week, after Kellyanne Conway gave an interview describing falsehoods as “alternative facts,” sales of George Orwell’s decades-old classic 1984 spikedThe book, a part of so many high-school syllabi, appears to be helping people contextualize political rhetoric; the sales boost even led Michiko Kakutani at The New York Times to write an homage to the still-relevant novel, headlined “Why ‘1984’ Is a 2017 Must-Read.”

But, as The New Republic pointed out, it’s not the only title that can offer valuable insight. Writer Josephine Livingston suggested that Franz Kafka’s The Trial might be a more salient comparison. Sophie Gilbert noted in The Atlantic that Sinclair Lewis and Hannah Arendt books have also seen sales boosts in the past year.

When it comes to undermining the media, controlling the dissemination of information and political leaders’ contradictions, there’s plenty of literary precedent. If you’ve read Orwell and are looking for more novels on these topics, there’s a range of dystopian and realistic fiction grappling with censorship and propaganda. We’ve collected a few below:

The Tsar of Love and Techno by Anthony Marra

Marra’s connected stories span generations, showing how history erodes certain truths and throws others into relief. The first story is about a more concrete kind of censorship; its protagonist works in Joseph Stalin’s Department of Party Propaganda and Agitation, literally removing faces from paintings and newspapers. When he fails to do his job, haunted by the face of a familiar-looking ballerina, there are consequences.

The Word Exchange by Alena Graedon

The dystopian world imagined by Graedon isn’t so dissimilar from our own, which is what makes her novel particularly frightening. A sort of neurological disease has the potential to infect the tech-obsessed, making them no longer able to communicate clearly. Deeper readers remain more or less immune to the affliction, anchored as they are in context.

The Noise of Time by Julian Barnes

Barnes’ latest novel isn’t a dystopian one, but an intimate look at the life of an artist under tyrannical watch. Composer Dmitri Shostakovich goes unnoticed by Stalin until the ruler makes his negative thoughts on his music clear. He’s neither killed nor exiled, but instead made to represent Soivet ideals, forcing him to question which is more valuable: his art or his life.

Censoring an Iranian Love Story by Shahriar Mandanipour

In his review of Mandanipour’s novel, the critic James Wood reminded readers that “tyranny is the mother of metaphor, and all that.” In other words, a novelist hailing from a country where censorship is a literary restriction might get creative with his storytelling methods. Such is the case in this love story, centered on what can and can’t be communicated publicly about a private relationship.

The Flame Alphabet by Ben Marcus

Ah, teens. Their tendency to spew righteous, thinly researched nonsense is annoying, but it’s harmless ― endearing, even. Right? Not so in Marcus’ experimental novel, where the language of young people is physically harmful to their parents. Naturally, chaos follows; unethical testing practices ensue, and the novel’s hero, Sam, strikes out on his own to find a cure. Which is all to say that words are as capable of harm as actions.

The Circle by Dave Eggers

When we imagine censorship, we imagine good citizens silenced by overt governmental mandates, finding clever new ways to express themselves in spite of noxious restrictions. In Eggers’ novel ― soon to be adapted into a film ― censorship is more complicated than that. It stems instead from a well-meaning corporate culture gone awry. At the Circle ― a Google-meets-Facebook conglomerate ― openness is valued over privacy, and self-censorship arises as a result.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Another beloved book soon to be adapted for the screen, Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is about a religious fundamentalist movement that occurs swiftly, oppressing women in its wake. In this imagined dystopia, called Gilead, women are issued uniforms and are separated from their families. They’re also not allowed to read ― knowledge, after all, is freeing.

Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart

If the choppy-sounding title of Shteyngart’s most recent novel ― Super Sad True Love Story ― doesn’t sound to you like Doublespeak, maybe the 1984 connection will be made clearer by its premise. In a near-future society where personal devices and individual “scores” are obsessed over, relationships are stripped of their nuance and intimate connection is nearly impossible. Sad!

The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson

In Johnson’s portrayal of North Korea, the government is prone to doing one thing while publicly declaring that it’s doing an entirely different thing. It’s a tactic that, on an individual level, can lead citizens to question their own perceptions of reality; on a large, governmental scale, the method of control is even more potent. To illustrate the rift between private and public knowledge, the book is told both from a first-person perspective, using the language of sheeny propaganda.

Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut

An apolitical playwright — American born, German raised — stays in Germany during World War II, and joins onto the Nazis’ propaganda campaign. After the war, he returns to America, where he eventually becomes a symbol of a white supremacist group. The story, like Vonnegut’s Bluebeard, is written as he narrates the writing of his own diary.
