British MPs to Probe Fast Fashion Business with New Inquiry

LONDON – Fast fashion will be thrust under the spotlight in a new inquiry that was revealed and launched here Friday. The U.K.’s environmental audit committee is looking to reveal the damage done by fast fashion and clean up its environmental footprint.
Investigations will be conducted on fast fashion’s impact, such as its life cycle and carbon and water footprint. It will also focus on providing solutions for waste and pollution reduction. The committee is seeking submissions and contributions to their inquiry by September 3 to inform their first hearing.
“Fashion shouldn’t cost the earth, but the way we design, make and discard clothes has a huge environmental impact. Producing clothes requires toxic chemicals and climate-changing emissions,” said Mary Creagh, chairwoman of the environmental audit committee.
According to a report conducted by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, by 2050 fashion will have consumed over a quarter of the world’s annual carbon budget if it continues to grow at the same rate. Fast fashion encourages a throwaway culture – mass production to capture current trends shortens the lifespan of clothing – and clothes that have been disposed into landfills have contributed to methane emissions.

Truck Drivers and Casual Sex: An Inquiry Into the Potential Spread of HIV/AIDS in the Baltic Region

Truck Drivers and Casual Sex: An Inquiry Into the Potential Spread of HIV/AIDS in the Baltic Region

Truck Drivers and Casual Sex is part of the World Bank Working Paper series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank’s ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion. Workers in the transport industry, including long-distance drivers, are at a high risk of HIV infections. Frequent traveling, long absences away from home, long waits at border crossings and the apparent abundant presence of commercial sex workers at these places mean truck drivers are particularly vulnerable to engaging in casual sex. While the threat of an HIV/AIDS epidemic cannot be taken lightly in any country of the Europe and Central Asia region, four countries – Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia – stand out as being particularly vulnerable. First, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS is relatively high and is rapidly increasing in locations neighboring these countries, like Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova, where public health conditions are also rapidly deteriorating. Second, because of their geographical location, Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania stand at the crossroads of the main East-West and North-South transport corridors, and represent the link between countries of the former Soviet Union and western Europe. The open borders and rapid transit threatens to broaden the sweep of the HIV epidemic, from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus to Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as drug injectors and sex workers come into contact with other population groups in these countries. Truck Drivers and Casual Sex is based on a survey that explores the practice of casual sex among truck drivers and commercial sex workers in the border areas of Poland and Lithuania at a point of time. It uses this evidence to extrapolate the potential impact of these practices on the spread of HIV/AIDS in these countries.

An Inquiry Into the Original of Our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue in Two Treatises

An Inquiry Into the Original of Our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue in Two Treatises

Francis Hutcheson’s first book, An Inquiry into the Original of Our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue, was published in 1725, when its author was only thirty-one, and went through four editions during his lifetime. This seminal text of the Scottish Enlightenment is now available for the first time in a variorum edition based on the 1726 edition. The Inquiry was written as a critical response to the work of Bernard Mandeville and as a defense of the ideas of Anthony Ashley Cooper, Lord Shaftesbury. It consists of two treatises exploring our aesthetic and our moral abilities. Francis Hutcheson was a crucial link between the continental European natural law tradition and the emerging Scottish Enlightenment. Hence, he is a pivotal figure in the Natural Law and Enlightenment Classics series. A contemporary of Lord Kames and George Turnbull, an acquaintance of David Hume, and the teacher of Adam Smith, Hutcheson was arguably the leading figure in making Scotland distinctive within the general European Enlightenment. Wolfgang Leidhold is Professor of Political Science at the University of Cologne. Knud Haakonssen is Professor of Intellectual History and Director of the Centre for Intellectual History at the University of Sussex, England.
