Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair’s Levels Can Completely Change – and It’s Awesome

Though a sequel to the Banjo-Kazooie spiritual successor Yooka-Laylee from Playtonic Games, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair harkens back to Rare’s even older work, Donkey Kong Country, with a 2D-focused platforming adventure. And from my play time with a handful of levels — and the new capability to “flood” levels and create an alternate stage to play through — the sequel could very well prove to be an even better fit for the colorful, anthropomorphized world of Yooka and Laylee.

Watch the gameplay video above to see several of Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair’s stages — namely, Gasping Glades, Factory Fright, and Urban Uprise — in both their standard, and “flooded” or “updrafted” forms.

Oddworld: Soulstorm Preview – The Oddworld Quintology Lives and It’s Prettier Than Ever

Lorne Lanning and the Oddworld Inhabitants development team did it their way. No big publishers. No rushed schedule. No creative compromises. The next entry in the always-planned quintology (take that, Alien Quadrilogy!) of Oddworld games is finally well underway after the studio voluntarily shut down in 2005, made a bunch of money from the old Abe games selling well on PC, reopened the studio, and funded the New and Tasty remake, which has led us here, to Oddworld: Soulstorm.

My first thought when getting a demo of Soulstorm from Lanning was how gorgeous it looks. It’s clear that the Inhabitants have a background in film, because both the gameplay and especially the cinematics look like those of a game with four times the budget. Speaking of those cinematics, I saw the opening one, which picks up near the end of the story; Soulstorm will then walk you back to the beginning of the tale, and you’ll eventually catch up to where you started. This adventure will chronicle the legend of Abe and his follower are escaped slaves – fugitives on the run – fighting from the brink of extinction.

Every Rose as It’s Worn

The rose, one of nature’s great paradoxes — exquisite in its physical beauty and fragrance, whether hearty and bold or apparently delicate, yet dangerous and ever ready to draw blood.
That dichotomy has made roses a source of fascination throughout history. Countless cultures and religions have celebrated the glorious bloom, spinning tales around its creation and imbuing it with all kinds of meaning, the most constant, as a symbol of passion, love, eternity. Yet the rose has always had a rueful side to which creatives have long been drawn — painters, poets, playwrights and more drawn to its mystery, moodiness and in-full-view decay. Among those variously smitten: Yeats, Tennessee Williams, Robert Mapplethorpe and Mike Fleiss — the genius who created “The Bachelor.”
Fashion, too, has long romanced the rose. While that thought of rose-bedecked clothes might, at first, conjure images of sartorial schmaltz, the reality is in fact as varied as the flower types itself with designers, like other artistic types, often focusing on the bloom’s moodier incarnations. Such was the case with fall, a season in which roses bloomed everywhere, including on the runways of some of fashion’s most provocative and powerful creators. Bette Midler on Hocus Pocus’ Enduring Appeal: It Was an ‘Ugly Duckling’ and ‘Now It’s a Swan’

Bette Midler wasn’t concerned with the negative reviews Hocus Pocus initially received.

“I never read the critics,” Midler, 72, told PEOPLE and other reporters on Monday at her annual Hulaween charity event, benefitting the New York Restoration project.

In the 25 years since its releaseHocus Pocus has become a cult classic, and no one is happier than Midler.

“It was like an ugly duckling,” Midler said. “A little creature that nobody thought could do anything and now it’s a swan. It’s found its wings and it’s just flown away. I think it’s fantastic.”

Midler, who stars in the film alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, has been getting in the Hocus Pocus spirit, posting 25 images from the film to her Instagram, and recently attending Freeform’s Hocus Pocus 25th anniversary special.

A post shared by Bette Midler (@bettemidler) on Oct 16, 2018 at 4:37pm PDT

During the special, Midler explained that the project ‘intrigued’ her because it allowed her to “play physical comedy and be more than a little broad.”

She also revealed that due to the film’s practical effects, she actually got to fly while making the film, which she likened to choreography and described as “one of the greatest joys I’ve ever experienced as an actor.”

Midler explained, “It’s joyful, it’s also a dance, and there’s a lot of trying to be graceful while not being sure you weren’t going to be turned upside down.”

In the past, Midler has been skeptical of attempts to remake Hocus Pocus. When it was reported that a TV reboot was being developed by Disney, Midler told PEOPLE it was “going to be cheap.”

“I’m not sure what they’re going to do with my character,” she said. “My character is very, very broad and I don’t know who they’re going to find to play that.”

It’s Official! Nick Jonas & Priyanka Chopra Confirm Engagement as They Introduce Their Families

It’s official!

Three weeks after PEOPLE broke the news that Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra are engaged, the couple confirmed their relationship status Saturday by each posting the same romantic engagement photo to Instagram.

“Future Mrs. Jonas. My heart. My love,” Jonas, 25, captioned the shot — which showed the couple embracing as she placed her hand (and massive engagement ring) on his chest.

“Taken.. With all my heart and soul.,” Chopra, 36, wrote in the same shot on her page.

The confirmation comes as their families unite for the first time to celebrate the soon-to-be husband and wife’s engagement in Chopra’s home country of India.

Chopra shared a gallery of photos from the bash, including a group picture of she and Jonas, her mother Madhu, her brother Siddharth, and Jonas’ parents Denise and Kevin, Sr. — all smiling together in front of a custom “NP” logo (for Nick and Priyanka, natch).

Other pictures included Chopra and Jonas posing for another engagement shot, as well as snaps taken while the two participated in a prayer ceremony.

“The only way to do this… with Family and God,” she wrote. “Thank you all for your wishes and blessings 🙏🏼♥🎉

Jonas was spotted arriving at Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport in Mumbai on Thursday evening with his mother and father in tow. Not pictured at the airport were brothers Kevin, Joe and Frankie Jonas.

As they made their exit, the Jonas patriarch had a big Tiffany & Co. bag in his hand. Of course, Tiffany’s is the jewelers that closed down its London store for Nick to buy an engagement ring for Chopra.

A source previously confirmed to PEOPLE that Kevin popped the question in July while celebrating the Quantico actress’ 36th birthday in London. “They are so happy,” the insider said of the pair, who began dating in May.

“His friends and family have never seen him like this, and they’re all really excited for him. He’s definitely very serious about her,” a separate source added.

On Tuesday, Chopra showed off the diamond for the first time in two photos with her friend (and fellow Bollywood actress) Raveena Tandon.

Tandon, 43, shared the snapshots on her social media account, both taken while Chopra hung her left arm around her friend’s shoulders.

The ring appeared to be a customized Tiffany & Co. cushion cut diamond with tapered baguettes.

“Peecee and I getting our pouts in order ! 😂,” Tandon wrote in the caption.

Although Jonas and Chopra only dated for two months prior to their engagement, their friendship dates back longer than that.

At the 2017 Met Gala, the actress decided to bring the pop star along as her date since the pair both wore Ralph Lauren to the fashion event.

“We were both wearing Ralph Lauren! And we decided to go together because it was fun,” Chopra explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live last year when asked why they had decided to walk the red carpet together. “Yeah we were on the same table. We know each other so we were like, ‘Hey you know what, let’s go together.’ And I was like, ‘Okay. Let’s go together!’ It just ended up working out.”

New Mom Brigitte Nielsen Turns 55 and Couldn’t Be Happier: It’s the ‘Best Time in My Life’

Life is fabulous at 55 for Brigitte Nielsen.

The Danish-Italian actress celebrates her birthday on Sunday, less than a month after welcoming her fifth child (and first daughter!), Frida.

“Celebrating my birthday has never been more exciting,” she exclusively tells PEOPLE of the special occasion. “It’s the best time in my life, with my adorable little Frida, my wonderful husband and four beautiful grown-up sons.”

She adds, “Life is amazing, you only get one, so take good care of it, and live it to the fullest.”

Nielsen and her husband, Italian model Mattia Dessi, previously gave PEOPLE an exclusive look at the little raven-haired beauty, who arrived safely in a Los Angeles hospital on June 22, weighing 5 lbs., 9 oz, and measuring 19 inches long.

“We are overjoyed to welcome our beautiful daughter into our lives,” she told PEOPLE. “It’s been a long road, and so worth it. We’ve never been more in love.”

Nielsen made headlines when she revealed on Instagram on May 30 that — at age 54 — she was pregnant with her fifth child. The star of Red Sonja and Beverly Hills Cop II — who has been married five times — previously had all boys: Raoul Meyer Jr., 23, Douglas Meyer, 25, Killian Gastineau, 28, and Julian Winding, 34.

Nielsen, who was married to actor Sylvester Stallone from 1985-87, wed Dessi in July 2006. Daughter Frida is their first child together.

Last week, Nielsen celebrated the couple’s wedding anniversary with a silly shot of the duo eating ice cream.

“12yr marriage today and we still have love&fun with just being together❤#love #together,” she said.

It’s Official! Downton Abbey’s Original Cast to Reunite for Big Screen Movie Adaption

It’s finally happening!

The long-awaited Downton Abbey movie has officially been greenlit, with production scheduled to start this summer.

And to make matters even sweeter, the original cast is set to return for the big screen adaption, including Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville and more.

While plot details are still unknown, Brian Percival, who directed the original series’ pilot, will direct the film.

“Since the series ended, fans of Downton have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter,” commented Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski. “We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of Downton to the big screen.”

The acclaimed television series followed the lives of the elite Crawley family and the servants who worked in their country home. The period piece took place in the 20th century.

During its six-season run, Downton Abbey won an impressive three Golden Globe Awards and 15 Primetime Emmy Awards.

A movie version of the acclaimed series was first teased in 2016 when Dockery admitted that a big-screen extension was “something I would wholeheartedly consider,” during an interview with the U.K.’s The Telegraph.

In 2017, Dockery once again expressed her interested in making the film but said it could be challenging to get the original cast to sign on.

“I think there is still potential for a Downton film,” the 35-year-old actress told the Associated Press. “These things take time. It seems to be a challenging getting 18 actors together at the same time in the same country.”

It’s Equal Pay Day! 5 Easy Tips for Women to Negotiate the Salary They Deserve – According to Catt Sadler

In the past year, women across the country have joined forces to protest unequal pay in the workplace, from minimum-wage workers to blockbuster stars including Jennifer Lawrence. And perhaps no one has protested that wage gap more publicly than Catt Sadler, who inadvertently became the face of the movement when she quit her job at E! after discovering she was making half the salary of her male co-host.

So who better to raise awareness of Equal Pay Day – April 10, which is as far into this year  the average woman has to work to make what her male counterpart made in 2017 – than Sadler, who is teaming up with Luna Bar and AAUW to highlight the wage gap and offer solutions (including salary negotiation workshops hosted around the country, among other tools).  The star, who’s currently working on a docuseries about the topic with Lawrence, shared five easy tips for salary negotiation that she’s learned since becoming an activist for the cause.

1. Don’t rely on the company to make the best offer.

No one is more committed to your success than you, so you need to be prepared to be your own best advocate right out of the gate – don’t wait until you’ve “proven yourself” or trust that they’ll raise your compensation once you’ve put in time. “I would encourage people to start the day they step into the workforce,” Sadler says. “You often trust in your employer or the company in which you have dedicated more than a decade, like I did. I really just trusted the process, but that’s not enough. I wish I would have known to ask more, sooner. If you enter the workforce making more from the get go then you are not playing catch-up; for me I think it was just a little too late. At the end of the day we were just never going to get there.”

2. Do your research to find out what salary is fair, and write that number down ahead of time.

“I think a lot of women get the job offer and already the employer has dictated the ballpark range of what you can potentially make,” Sadler says. “A tip that surprised me was, you put down the number first. That requires doing some research, finding out what other women with similar experience in a similar position with the same expertise as you might be making – but you can gain a lot from that starting point being a little bit higher.”

3. Be ready to ask tough questions.

Because money is still a taboo topic, it can be very uncomfortable to bring up salary comps, but Sadler says it’s so important. “I think just talking at all and getting rid of this taboo notion that we are not supposed to share how much we make – I mean that’s where it all begins,” she says. “We can’t even have an argument or conversation amongst one another or say that in the workplace if people aren’t being completely transparent.”

And for women just starting out in their careers who might not have networks to tap for that information? “I think the future generations are already far more attuned to what’s going on, so I think we are growing a generation of girls from day one who just are expecting more,” she says. One way for new-to-the-workforce women to approach the topic: “Ask questions like, If I take this job, can I be sure that a male doing a similar job and contributing the same with the same education is not going to be paid more than me? These are questions that we can ask and we can expect what is fair from our employers.”

RELATED PHOTOS: 21 Female Stars Who Have Spoken Out About the Pay Gap

4. Bring men into the discussion as allies.

Sadler also thinks the next generation will be more attuned to wage disparity from both sides – it won’t just be a women’s issue. “When it comes to men and boys in general, the guys aren’t the problem. They aren’t the enemy; it’s the system that’s the issue. It’s the systematic way that we have done things for so long,” she says. As a mom of two young boys, she says they ask, “you have all these same contributions but this guy gets paid more only because his gender? For them it’s like, that’s not fair, that doesn’t make sense.”

5. And of course, support other women.

The star got very public support from stars including Debra Messing and Reese Witherspoon after her E! exit, and she says it’s so important to build up the women around you – which you can do by role-playing salary negotiations with friends to help them prepare and sharing salary information when you have it.

“We have to have women rally around one another, and I think we are doing that,” she said. “I’ve never been prouder to be a woman than I am today. That is the absolute truth. I mean the women that came before me, before my departure, they inspired me and I think it’s a real trickle effect. We have to keep being these champions for one another.”

Canadian Snowboarder Wins Olympic Medal One Year After Near-Fatal Accident: It’s a ‘Miracle’

Just 11 months ago, Mark McMorris lay in a Canada hospital with 17 broken bones, a collapsed lung, a ruptured spleen, a fractured jaw and internal bleeding. But on Sunday, the 24-year-old snowboarder won the bronze medal in men’s snowboard slopestyle at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

“I’m pretty stoked because people would die for a medal at the Olympics — and I nearly did,” the athlete told reporters on Monday. “To stand on the podium again, it definitely feels special. Yeah, it’s definitely a miracle and I’m really thankful.”

The Regina, Canada, native navigated an intricate course filled with jumps and rails to take home the medal. After the win, McMorris tweeted a grateful message: “Thank You Life🙏🏻❤.” He included a pair of photos, one showing him in a hospital bed nearly a year earlier, and the other of himself holding the medal.

In March 2017, McMorris was snowboarding in Whistler, British Columbia, and mistimed a jump, CNN reports.

“Hit a tree out of mid-air and pretty much broke everything and hurt a lot of internal organs,” he told CNN. “ was lucky enough to have my brother and a really awesome crew that had a satellite phone and got a helicopter there and pretty much saved my life. So pretty lucky.”

McMorris said that as he lay waiting for a helicopter that day, he was sure he wouldn’t survive.

“When I was laying there I was pretty sure I was gonna die because I had so many broken bones,” he told CNN. “I could tell there was a lot wrong inside.”

But McMorris made it.

On Sunday he stood proudly on the Olympic podium in Pyeongchang and smiled wide as he held up his medal. Soon, the Twittersphere flooded with praise for the snowboarder, with ski racer Lindsey Vonn calling the win “amazing” in a tweet.

“What a journey back to the podium for @MarkMcMorris. Mark – your tenacity & courage inspire so many of us. #PyeongChang2018,” Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted on Sunday.

The 2018 Winter Olympics began on Thursday and continue through Feb. 25.

Watch Prince William’s Tearful Meeting with Teen Who Attempted Suicide: ‘It’s So Personal’

Prince William took on a therapist-style role as he hosted a moving video with a mother who lost her son, and a teen who contemplated suicide over cyberbullying.

The women, who were the prince’s guests at Kensington Palace, spoke to the royal dad about their deep traumas following the consequences of online abuse.

The film reveals William’s motivation for his taskforce on cyberbullying. Mom Lucy Alexander and teen Chloe Hine both contributed to the taskforce’s investigation over the last 18 months.

After the birth of his son, Prince George, William heard about a young boy “who had killed himself following a vicious campaign of online bullying,” a Kensington Palace statement says. “As he looked into the issue further it was soon clear there were many similar stories from the UK and around the world.”

He was then inspired to set up the ambitious taskforce, which brings together tech and media companies.

Last year, Lucy Alexander shared the story about her son, Felix, who took his own life following online abuse. She started her own campaign to raise awareness of the issues in an effort to ensure no other parents would suffer the heartbreak of losing a child to online bullies. “ read Lucy’s story and asked her to be one of the parents to help the taskforce better understand the impact of cyberbullying,” the statement adds.

RELATED VIDEO: Prince William Condemns ‘Barbaric’ Illegal Wildlife Trade

In the video, which ends with William giving both women a compassionate hug, Lucy Alexander says, “I sort of feel that Felix has given me a job to do – and my job is to make sure that we try and help as many other people like him.”

Chloe Hine, who was a member of William’s Taskforce Youth Panel, attempted to take her own life at 13 years old after being attacked online. She explains in the video that it was while writing a goodbye note that she found comfort in the ability to express what she had been unable to say in person. “On social media you can’t escape it, you’re constantly with that bully. People just turned against me because they thought ‘she said this one thing this one time so let’s all hate her for that’, and it just spiraled out of control from there.”

She continues: “It’s written down, so it’s there to look back at, time and time again. And if you’re in a negative space, that’s all you can see. You look for the negativity and you look for the cruel things.”

William brought together some of the world’s most recognizable names in media and tech, such as Apple, Facebook, Google, Twitter and online media companies, as well as children’s charities and parents, to work alongside the panel of young people to find ways to tackle cyberbullying.

On Thursday, William is set to unveil the results of his taskforce, which was chaired by tech entrepreneur Brent Hoberman.

If you or someone you know is considering suicide, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
