Hannah Godwin of ‘Bachelor in Paradise’ Talks Drama-Free Shoot, ‘Making Pretty Powerful’ for Kensie

ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” is all about the drama, but the reality show’s Hannah Godwin has a more direct message in Kensie’s fall campaign. In an interview Tuesday, the 24-year-old talked about the brand’s “#Make Pretty Powerful” marketing initiative, but she wasn’t about to reveal anything about the show. Godwin edged into modeling as a high schooler, going on to appear in print ads, catalogues, e-commerce sites, music videos and commercials, particularly in the Southeast and on the West Coast. Photography is another pursuit. Having bought Kensie as a teenager, she said, “They have very cute clothes, which made me pick up their things. It’s good quality. You can rewear a lot of the stuff, which I really love. I will keep them in my closet for a year and just rewear them a bunch of different ways.” Dove Shore photographed the campaign in Beverly Hills in what the reality star described as “a magical dollhouse.” But one that was free from any sign of Dylan Barbour, Blake Horstmann or any of Godwin’s other televised admirers. In addition to the abundance of bikinis and cut-off shorts that Godwin wore for “BIP,” she also wore a few tanks. “It was so hot there. I

Nike Is Making SpongeBob SquarePants Sneakers

SpongeBob SquarePants is getting his own sneaker collection.
In celebration of the Nickelodeon TV show’s 20th anniversary, Nike is teaming with NBA player Kyrie Irving to create a SpongeBob SquarePants collection that takes inspiration from the beloved show’s characters.
Nike and Irving — a self-described super fan of the show — worked in collaboration with Nickelodeon to create five versions of the Kyrie 5 and Kyrie Low 2 sneakers that are designed after the titular character along with his friends Patrick Star, Squidward Tentacles, Mr. Krabs and Sandy Cheeks.

The Kyrie 5 sneaker is created to look like a sponge with a yellow polka dot pattern and a red and brown sole that mimics SquarePants’ uniform suit. The sneakers also include an image of the character himself on the inside soles.
Because a SpongeBob SquarePants collaboration wouldn’t be complete without his best friend Patrick, another version of the Kyrie 5 sneaker is included in the collection that takes inspiration from the

Lopez’s dress is still celebrated as a cultural emblem of the early aughts and is credited for catapulting the singer and actress to fashion icon status. The dress was the impetus behind Google launching Google Images, with former chief executive officer, Eric Schmidt, stating that Lopez’s dress was the most popular search term that the company had ever seen.
The limited-edition sneaker is available in both men and women’s sizes and will be available on Concepts’ web site and stores in Boston and New York.

Taco lovers can now take their obsession to the next level — with Taco Bell sunglasses.
The American fast-food chain is teaming with Diff Charitable Eyewear for a capsule collection launching Friday that takes inspiration from many signature elements from Taco Bell, including its signature bell logo and its packets of hot sauce.
The five-piece collection offers kitschy updates on Diff Eyewear’s most popular styles, like the brand’s Luka visor-like style, which features the word “hot” branded over each lens. The style is also in an ombré yellow to red color scheme and includes a flame motif on the frame.
Also included are versions of the brand’s Sawyer style, including reading glasses that have cartoonish illustrations of tacos and hot sauce packets on its translucent frame and a black-frame version with the orange flame design seen throughout the collection.
The collaboration will be available on Diff Eyewear’s web site and at The Bell Hotel, Taco Bell’s upcoming, limited-time resort in Palm Springs, Calif., opening in August. Purchases of the styles will come with taco-shaped cases and a cleaning cloth that resembles a hot sauce packet.

Shania Twain Takes Fans Behind-the-Scenes at the Making of Her Now World Tour

Shania Twain is pulling back the curtain on her acclaimed Now Tour.

The singer and reigning queen of country pop is currently touring the country on the North American leg of her world tour — which kicked off in May and will run through August before heading overseas.

So how’d it all come together? Twain and company tell all in a new mini-documentary that PEOPLE is premiering exclusively.

In it, fans can see everything from the rehearsal process to opening night in Tacoma, Washington.

“I’m very excited to get the tour on the road,” Twain, 52, says in the clip. “Once we get in front of the audience and they go, ‘Yay,’ it makes every day interesting and worthwhile.”

Rob Sinclair, Twain’s creative director, says that the singer is “particularly good” at knowing what she wants.

“It’s been really fun to see how we can match the old classics that people are familiar with and then how we stage these news songs to help introduce them,” he says. “It’s a completely new show, totally different from anything you’ve ever seen from Shania Twain before.”

Helping that along are multiple oversized LED boxes, some of which send singers, band members, and Twain herself soaring up in the air.

“It’s complete insanity,” says guitarist Joshua Ray Gooch. “I’m not a fan of heights. They sent me up to the highest point. Shania is up really high as well. I don’t know how she’s doing it.”

Train released her latest album, Now, in September. The 12-track LP debuted on at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It was her first new album in 15 years.

Singles of the record have included “Life’s About to Get Good” and “Swingin’ with My Eyes Closed” — the later which Twain premiered on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Twain has won five Grammys and remains the top-selling female country artist of all time, with more than 90 million albums sold worldwide.

Her Now Tour will play the Budweiser Gardens in London, Canada on Tuesday.

Southern Charm’s Shep Shows Off His Abs While Making Meatballs with Cameran: ‘Can You Handle It?’

Shep Rose is good at many things, but cooking doesn’t appear to be one of them!

On Thursday’s episode of Southern Charm, the 38-year-old reality star asks pal Cameran Eubanks to help him in the kitchen — and PEOPLE has the exclusive first look at their flub-filled session.

“I’m trying to make meatballs, will you help me?” Rose laments. “I don’t know what I’m doing.”

The two turn to instructional website Craftsy.com — though even their simple step-by-step recipe and video tutorial seems to trip up Rose.

“I’m overwhelmed,” he says. “Look at me. What do I know? I don’t know anything. My mom has done everything for me for my whole life.”

Luckily, Rose at least knows how to dress for the part. Before he and Eubanks start the dish over, he puts on an apron with printed abs on it.

“Are you gaining weight? You’ve got some handles,” Eubanks, 34, asks.

“Can you handle it?” he jokes, later pouring the two a glass of wine.

Elsewhere in the clip, Eubanks gives an update on newborn daughter Palmer, now 7 months.

“Palmer’s great,” Eubanks says. “She’s with my mom right now asleep.”

She then admits that she is dealing with mom guilt for spending time away from her daughter.

“I do feel a little bit guilty being out without my child,” she says. “But I have to balance being a mother with also still having my own life. Because babies, they’re just like little parasites, and you’re like their personal assistant.”

Virgil Abloh and Takashi Murakami Talk Making Art Via WhatsApp

SEEING IN TECHNICOLOR: Don’t let staging his first men’s show for Louis Vuitton on Thursday, the day after presenting the latest collection under his own line, Off-White, slow Virgil Abloh down. The designer was on fine form at the inauguration of his show, “Murakami & Abloh, Technicolor 2,” at the Gagosian gallery in Paris on Friday night.
Asked how he was feeling having created such a happy moment at Vuitton, with his Technicolor runway, he replied: “A bit of humanity in our industry can always go a long way.”
He reiterated that it felt like his first real show. “There’s only a few moments in a fashion designer’s career where this opportunity for a perfect storm, where the right platform, the right attention, the right time in our society to do something like that comes along. I have the feeling my intention came through,” he said.
He described the basis of the exhibition as “basically a conversation that Takashi Murakami and I have daily and we produce work out of that conversation. We make paintings, digital works, sculptures, that report our time. We’re both from different fields: I’m multidisciplinary, he practices his art and so where we meet in the middle are these

Amid Men’s Wear Hype, Thoughtful Basics Are Making Noise, Too

It’s all about simplicity.
At a time when streetwear is dominating the conversation in the world of men’s fashion, there are a number of brands that are quietly building sizable businesses selling updated basics to guys who don’t live and die for the latest Supreme drop or Virgil Abloh sneaker collaboration.
Brands such as Buck Mason, Everlane, Goodlife and Huckberry are making inroads selling these items, which could be labeled “everyday casualwear” or “essentials.”
In years past, their customers probably bought their chinos, T-shirts and hoodies in department stores or specialty retailers such as Gap or Banana Republic. But today, they’re increasingly seeking out other options and spending their money on brands they feel better address their needs.
“They offer simple solutions,” said Wendy Liebmann, chief executive officer of WSL, a global strategy consultancy. “When you look at all the new businesses that are cropping up, they address the fundamental issue in the industry, which is that men are looking for something reasonable to wear that is comfortable and stylish.”
Liebmann believes the “increased lack of service” at department and large specialty stores, coupled with the “enormous” assortment offered “without curation,” is what is driving men to indie brands that are trend-right but not overwhelming.

How Alife Is Making a Comeback

Rob Cristofaro and Treis Hill have bought back Alife and have a new investor.
Alife, which is now almost 20 years old, was originally founded as an artist collective and multibrand retail space by Cristofaro, Arnaud Delecolle, Tony Arcabascio and Tammy Brainard — Hill joined the team later. The company, which also operates Alife Rivington Club in the Lower East Side, a sneaker concept store that’s been open since 2001, and Alife, its apparel store that sits next to it, has been through a string of owners and financial partners, but it was most recently co-owned by Cristofaro, Hill and Seth Gerszberg, who is now no longer involved.
For the past couple of years, Alife — one of the original downtown streetwear brands that was founded when the term streetwear didn’t exist — has released a few things here and there, but Cristofaro and Hill have been mostly quiet and focused on cleaning up Alife’s global distribution and preparing for a true relaunch, which begins with an unlikely product collaboration with Crocs.

Cristofaro approached Crocs before the footwear brand re-entered the fashion conversation last October via a tie-in with Balenciaga on an imaginative, platform pair that retails for $ 850. The Alife

How Rockstar Is Making Its Open Worlds Even Better

“We’ve always tried to make these worlds places you can get lost in. Feel like they exist when you’re not even in them – like they’re waiting for you.”

That’s the kind of world Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, wants to build.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar’s first original game in five years, and the first it’s built specifically for the current generation of consoles. It’s a fact that’s easy to forget with GTA V still dominating sales charts and amidst the constant updates to GTA Online.

Work on Read Dead 2 began eight years ago, as production drew to a close on its predecessor. “I think when we finished this one…” Nelson breaks off and gestures towards a screen behind him in his Edinburgh office; it’s running Red Dead Redemption on an old Xbox 360 debug console. “I always like to keep it close by, just to stay familiar with it and the feelings it evokes.” The TV displays the game’s title screen, which teases the player with a sliver of the game’s natural beauty.

Sean John at 20: Sean Combs on Longevity and Making a Difference

While his name may have changed more times than some people change cars, there has been at least one constant for Sean Combs over the past 20 years: The Sean John brand.
The label’s founder, born Sean John Combs, has been known as Puffy, Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Diddy and now, Love. But for the hip-hop entrepreneur, they’re all just names that reflect different periods in his life. Call him what you will — his success speaks for itself.
His earnings in 2017 alone, according to Forbes, were $ 130 million and his net worth is estimated at $ 820 million, edging out even Jay Z, who is worth a mere $ 810 million.
Not bad for someone who dropped out of business school in his sophomore year. Now, at 48, Combs has a multipronged career that covers not only fashion but music, TV production, athletes’ beverages and vodka. And, of course, he travels with his own entourage – at his WWD shoot, 17 people arrived well ahead of the star. Given all his activities, getting face time with Combs can be a challenge, hence the reason Sean John’s vice president of design arrived with storyboards and line sheets for the holiday 2018 collection, which he

Ruby Rose Is Out of Her Wheelchair and Making ‘Progress’ After Back Surgery

Ruby Rose is on her way to recovery!

The actress, 31, is out of her wheelchair and making “progress” after undergoing back surgery, she wrote on Instagram on Tuesday morning, along with photos of her walker and cane.

“I’ve grown accustomed to my cane,” Rose wrote.

She revealed on Thursday that she opted for surgery after years of dealing with back pain.

“So..For the past few years (decade) I’ve been dealing with a spine issue,” Rose wrote on Twitter. “I am now recovering from a back procedure, but I do need to stay active, so before I get seen with my cane and wheelchair in public, I’d rather put it out there that I’m fine and going to be fine.”

Rose said she also quit smoking ahead of the procedure.

“On the plus side guess who had to quit smoking!!!!! YAY!!!! Im done! I’m finally done,” she wrote. “That filthy, smelly, dirty, slowly killing you while you pay for it to suffocate you, is finally out of my life. I quit yesterday. And for my back (and Mum) I’ll never start again.”

Rose crowdsourced from her followers (and Chrissy Teigen) for entertainment ideas as she recovers.

“What I need to know now is when I’m not wheeling around LA like a 102 year old, what movies, shows, books and video games do you suggest … I’m buying a switch … I’m looking at you @chrissyteigen what games should I get?” Rose asked.

The Orange is the New Black star filled some of her time with an arts and crafts project.

“Well, I’m currently blinging my cane and walker up so they can be more snazzy. It’s not the Cane and my A frame that’s the problem, it’s the tan and nude colors… all I need is a boombox and streamers and I’m good.”

Rose recently dealt with criticism over her body, with her followers accusing her of being anorexic.

“Body shaming S— ME. It’s so frustrating,” Rose wrote on Instagram. “Not because I care what someone thinks of my body. I love my body when I don’t work out and I am soft and I love it when I train hard and feel strong. I hate it because it worries fans or shames them. I hate it because it uses no logic and basically is just someone projecting their experience and expectations on others.”

Rose said she’s healthier than ever, thanks to a vegan and alcohol-free diet.

“I am plant based and stupidly healthy,” she said. “… So please take care of your body and your mind and your soul and stop judging others.”

STREET SIGNS: The Making of a Celebrity Sneaker Deal

Reebok spent a year courting Future.
The relationship began in 2015 when the company started seeding the artist, whose real name is Nayvadius Wilburn, with shoes to wear. Then the team began attending his shows, inviting him to Reebok’s headquarters in Massachusetts and detailing how both parties could help each other.
“They made an effort to connect with him,” said Ebonie Ward, Future’s brand manager. “It wasn’t about sending e-mails. They told him they didn’t want to take advantage of him as an artist and use his fan base. They wanted to build a partnership with him. That’s what sealed the deal with Future. It wasn’t about him throwing on a pair of shoes and thinking people are going to just buy them.”
Athletic companies tapping celebrities, specifically hip-hop artists, isn’t a new concept. In fact, 14 years ago, Reebok offered Jay-Z a deal — the first of its kind — that led to the commercially successful S. But the structure of today’s deals, and the climate around them, has evolved and Future’s relationship with Reebok reflects how the market has shifted.

Seth Meyers Rips Trump’s Team For Making Us Question Our Sanity

The president is under investigation. That much we know, right?

Wrong! Sad! You’re the puppet!

Seth Meyers took a confusing trip down the rabbit hole on Monday to try to make sense of the mixed messages coming from the White House about the alleged investigation into Donald Trump’s Russian ties.

First, the president tweeted an investigation was happening; then Jay Sekulow, a member of his legal team, denied it; and then Sekulow apparently confirmed it before immediately denying it again.

Thankfully, Meyers was there sifting through the ashes of our own sanities to break down what’s going on. He also breaks out his Jared Kushner impression, thanks to the Trump senior adviser’s recent reveal of his true voice. So if your head is hurting during this whole ordeal, at least there’s that.

4 Ways Researchers Are Pushing The Boundaries Of Making Babies

Infertility treatment is more common than ever, thanks to technology.

More than 70,000 babies were born through in-vitro fertilization in 2014, according to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. That’s an increase of nearly 10,000 babies, compared with five years earlier.

Men and women are increasingly likely to seek medical help for reasons that include reduced stigma and more employers offering coverage for IVF. But one big reason for the trend is clear: Fertility doctors are getting better at making babies.

“Science is moving at a pace that’s very different than any of us could have ever imagined,” said Dr. Eli Adashi, a Brown University professor of reproductive medical science who specializes in ovarian biology.

Researchers have fine-tuned the best ways to stimulate a woman’s ovaries, grow embryos in the lab and pick the best ones to transfer to her uterus. Improved success rates have made IVF ― once considered an experimental procedure ― the gold standard of fertility treatment.

Here are some of the most inspiring breakthroughs that promise to rock fertility treatment further over the next decade:

1. Babies Made From Three People

For the estimated 12,000 women in the U.S. who risk passing down devastating mitochondrial diseases, including neurological disorders, and heart and kidney problems, a new procedure can be the difference in deciding to have children or not.

Scientists have found a way to remove the DNA nucleus from an egg with bad mitochondria (the energy-generating part of our cells), and place it into a donor’s healthy egg, from which the nucleus has been removed. The egg is then fertilized in the lab with sperm from a third person.

”It’s a huge breakthrough because we’re able to separate out the part of the egg that’s causing the problems,” said Susan Solomon, CEO of the New York Stem Cell Foundation.

The controversial procedure has already been approved in the United Kingdom, and it’s under review at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Supporters say it doesn’t really mix the genes of two women, since there’s not much DNA contained in mitochondria. In the future, it might be possible to use the technology to help rehabilitate less robust eggs from older women or women who prematurely went through menopause.

2. Fewer Twins From Better Embryo Freezing

For the last decade, the buzz about freezing eggs has been focused on women stashing away eggs to prolong fertility. But about five years ago, fertility doctors adopted a flash-freezing technology called vitrification to preserve embryos of women undergoing IVF.

It’s trickier to freeze five-day-old blastocyst embryos of about 80 to 100 cells than it is to freeze a single-cell egg. But the vitrified embryos have a better chance of surviving the warming process and resulting in a pregnancy than embryos frozen the old way.

The big payoff: Fertility doctors can convince patients who want twins to aim for a single pregnancy, and to save their remaining frozen embryos to try for a sibling later.

“By transferring a single embryo at a time, we can achieve safer pregnancies and healthier moms and babies,” said Dr. Alan Penzias, fertility doctor at Boston IVF and professor at Harvard Medical School.

3. Cheaper Genetic Testing

Couples worried they could pass on genetic diseases, such as cystic fibrosis, to their offspring have long agonized whether to add thousands more to their IVF bill to have an embryo biopsied and tested for defects.

New technology known as next-generation sequencing allows scientists to study an embryo’s DNA with better accuracy, and to identify a much longer list of potential disorders. And, instead of studying a handful of embryos at a time, technicians can put a barcode on each embryo and test 200 at once.

“It can bring down the cost from thousands of dollars to hundreds,” said Penzias. “If you had told me in medical school that someday we could see an IVF couple, test their embryos and routinely help them avoid passing on a lethal disease, I would have never believed it.”

4. Making Eggs And Sperm From Skin Cells

For years, we’ve heard about “potential” applications of stem-cell science.

The future is finally getting close. The tantalizing idea of creating eggs from skin cells that have been programmed into embryonic-like stem cells was realized in mice by Japanese scientists a couple years ago. And here’s the kicker: Those mice gave birth to pups that also reproduced. The ability to make artificial eggs and sperm would be a “revolution” for reproductive science, said Adashi.

“It would eliminate IVF as we know it,” Adashi said. “You wouldn’t need to stimulate ovaries or retrieve eggs. You’d simply donate a cheek swab. It’s still a long way off, but people are working on it.”

In the meantime, doctors agree that the next revolution should focus on making fertility medicine accessible to more patients. Insurance plans are still not required to cover fertility treatment in most states.

5 Skin Care Tips For Making Sure Your Melanin Flourishes This Spring

Spring has officially sprung!

And while many people are thinking about decluttering their space and breaking out sundresses and shorts, they may forget that their skin care regimen could use some spring cleaning, too.

Dermatologist Brooke A. Jackson, M.D., told The Huffington Post a few key things people of color should be doing to ensure our skin, our body’s largest organ, remains glowing and healthy through the seasonal changes.

From sun protection to getting rid of discoloration, the North Carolina-based doctor has five necessary tips that keep your melanin on fleek this spring and summer.

1. Lighten up your routine

Just as you change your wardrobe, you should change your products. Put away the jars of heavy body butters and creams, and opt for something lighter, Jackson advises.

You start wearing shorts and T-shirts and so you should do the same with your products,” she said. “So generally we recommend in the winter time, you use a big jar of something you actually scoop. And in the spring and the summer, you can go a little bit lighter with something that has a little bit more lotion; like Vaseline Cocoa Radiant is a good choice because you still get the moisturizing effect because it’s got the micro droplets of Vaseline jelly and 100 percent pure cocoa butter in it but it’s not quite as heavy as some other jar products are.”

2. Stay moisturized

We tend to do more activities that can dry out our skin in the summer, like going to the beach or taking a dip in the pool. Jackson told HuffPost that it’s important to moisturize afterward, especially after being exposed to chlorine, which is “very, very drying.”

In addition to lathering up in the morning, she said swimmers should rinse all of the saltwater or pool water off and use lotion. Jackson said this doesn’t just apply to people who swim but people with certain skin conditions as well.

“Generally, I would say you should moisturize once to twice a day depending on what’s going on with you,” she said. “Certainly, if somebody has drier skin or if they’ve got eczema, they probably need a little bit more moisture and so two full moisturizing processes a day would be great … A lot of people during the spring and summer will probably do just fine with the once coming out of the shower in the morning.”

3. Go with your own glow

Despite the widespread myth, black people do need sunscreen. Jackson said this idea probably stemmed from people of color historically being excluded from certain medical research.

“Historically we focused on sunburn and a direct correlation between sunburn and skin cancer and so therefore [the message was only] our fair-skinned counterparts get it,” she said. “That message has been loud and clear for many, many years but [there’s an assumption that] people who have darker skin tend not to burn.”

If you’re going to chase the sun, protect yourself, she said.

“I think it’s really important to make sure that we are all sun protecting ourselves because it is not out of the realm of possibilities that skin cancer will develop,” Jackson explained. “So going with your own glow, not actively seeking tanning at the beach or just going out for a run, just making sure that you’re sun protected.”

It also doesn’t hurt that sunscreen can help get rid of discoloration.

4. Remember less is more

One product that locks and seals moisture is better (and more practical) than a cabinet full of products that you hardly use. Jackson said people should pick a product that can do multiple things for you and stick to it.

“Keep your regimen simple,” she said.

5. When all else fails, see a doctor

Dermatologists have the answers specific to your skin that your favorite YouTube vlogger may not have. Jackson said many of the skin problems people of color face (discoloration, hyperpigmentation, etc.) can only be healed by getting to the root of the issue.

“I have a lot of patients who try everything under the kitchen sink and then with their girlfriends and everything on the internet and they don’t make an appointment with a dermatologist who can help them out in 10 minutes or less,” Jackson said. “Discoloration is a huge issue with skin of color and we get discoloration from any inflammatory condition, acne, eczema, etc., so again, a reason to make sure that you’re getting the treatment that you need to make sure that that is controlled is because 9 times out of 10, the number one complaint of patients with skin color is I want an even complexion and I want this discoloration to go away.”

Jackson also said since black dermatologists aren’t accessible to everyone, it’s important for people with melanin to ask if their dermatologist knows how to treat darker skin.

Now, go forth and prosper with a fresh glow to your skin.

Dave Chappelle Wants Comedians To Stop Making The Same Donald Trump Jokes

Saturday Night Live” is experiencing a creative renaissance and its biggest ratings in two decades under Donald Trump’s presidency. But Dave Chappelle has a message for fellow comedians enjoying the fruits of the administration’s blunders: “Trump’s kind of bad for comedy.”

Speaking with CBC on Sunday, Chappelle offered his take on the current president’s relationship with his chosen profession, agreeing that comedy has “a role to play under Trump,” but warning that there’s a risk of regurgitating the same material.

“Most comics in the states are starting to do the same jokes, just because Trump is so on everybody’s mind,” he said. “So it’ll be nice when we don’t have to talk about him that much.”

Despite his concerns over Trump’s omnipresence, Chappelle said he still believes the state of comedy today is “strong and healthy,” citing the return of some of his favorites like Chris Rock and Jon Stewart to the game.

“I think that most of these guys you see working are wildly courageous,” he explained. “It’s such a strange time, being bombarded with so much information, and I think comedy is an important valve for syphoning through all that.”

In November, Chappelle hosted the first “Saturday Night Live” episode after the election and delivered a stirring opening monologue in response to Trump’s surprise win. After joking that America actually elected “an internet troll as our president,” he recalled a recent visit to the White House for a BET event that made him feel hopeful about the country’s direction.

“I saw how happy everybody was, these people who had been historically disenfranchised, and it made me feel hopeful, and it made me feel proud to be an American,” Chappelle said. “So, in that spirit, I’m wishing Donald Trump luck. I’m going to give him a chance, and we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one too.”

For more from Chappelle, you can watch his two comedy specials that premiere on Netflix this month.

Tomb Raider, Deus Ex Developers Making an Avengers Game

Square Enix and Marvel have announced a “multi-game partnership”, starting with an Avengers game made by Tomb Raider developer, Crystal Dynamics and Deus Ex developer Eidos Montreal due for release in 2018.

Announced first on Twitter, there are few details so far, other than the cryptic use of the word “Reassemble” in the trailer and hashtags. The current title appears to be “The Avengers project”, but that is almost certainly a working title.

The trailer’s YouTube description sheds slightly more light on the game, and the partnership between Square and Marvel:

Art of Pilgrimage, The: The Seeker’s Guide to Making Travel Sacred

Art of Pilgrimage, The: The Seeker’s Guide to Making Travel Sacred

For the intrepid traveler, there are more resources than ever before. But what about the traveler who is at a crossroads in life, longing for something else, neither diversion nor distraction, beyond escape and mere entertainment? What about those eager for a journey that is personally meaningful? For millennia this cry has been answered by pilgrimage, the transformative journey to a sacred center. The ancients referred to this path as the Way of the Pilgrim, an acknowledgement of travel for the sake of devotion, commitment, even penance to a holy site, a destination that blazes with meaning – in short, a journey of risk and renewal. The Art of Pilgrimage is a guide for travelers ready to embark on a sacred journey and for armchair travelers curious to know what it means to travel with soulful purpose. Geared toward the modern-day pilgrim looking for inspiration and a few spiritual tools for the road, it combines stories, myths, parables, and quotes from famous travelers of the past with practical suggestions and contemporary accounts from people traveling the sacred way today. Not a guidebook to holy sites, this book is designed to help travelers focus on the purpose and intention at every satge of their journey no matter where they are going. The Art of Pilgrimage includes stories of traditional pilgrimages such as those to Canterbury or Jerusalem, but also ones to Shakespeare’s home, Graceland, or the “Field of Dreams” in Iowa. Phil Cousineau recounts anecdotes from his own travels covering over 50 countries and offers readers the advice he gives when leading tours for the Joseph Campbell Foundation.

Making Sense of Sports

Making Sense of Sports

Sports are more important than ever socially, economically and culturally. As well as embodying cherished values and ideals, sports now reflect many of the worries of wider society. Drugs, racism, corruption and violence are all now major concerns and our experience of sport is increasingly subject to a gigantic industry made up of owners, players, sports goods manufacturers, television networks and corporate sponsors. In this newly expanded edition of Making Sense of Sports, Cashmore addresses all these issues as well as the more basic questions about the history of sports, its social context and possible future development. Among the new editions other themes are:* the body, how it works and why it is more cultural than natural* why women continue to be devalued and depreciated by sports* Nike, globalization and the sports industry* art and how it reflects changing conceptions of sports.

Trump’s Chief Strategist Steve Bannon Is Making Millions Off ‘Seinfeld’

As if Donald Trump’s upset presidential victory wasn’t a bitter enough pill to swallow, he’s also officially tainted America’s favorite sitcom “Seinfeld” by appointing Steve Bannon — executive chairman of Breitbart News, a site that traffics in white nationalism — as his new White House chief strategist

Bannon has had his hands in many different business ventures over the years, but one of his most lucrative deals was helping broker an agreement between the company that produced “Seinfeld,” Rob Reiner’s Castle Rock Entertainment, and Ted Turner.

In order to compete with rival film studios, Reiner and company made a deal with Westinghouse Electric in 1989 for around $ 48 million in exchange for 15 percent of the company. Years later, when Castle Rock was sold to Turner, Westinghouse hired Bannon’s company, Bannon & Co., to advise on how to proceed with their share of Castle Rock.

“Part of the deal was that Westinghouse could either sell or hold on to whatever TV series we had,” Reiner told The Daily Beast in a recent interview. “At the time we had eight pilots, and one of them was ‘Seinfeld.’ We didn’t know if it was going to be successful or not. But as payment, Bannon advised them to stay in and hold on to their profit participation in the series, and Westinghouse said, ‘Well, if you think it’s so good, why don’t you take a piece of this instead of us giving you a fee?’ And apparently that’s what Bannon did, and he wound up with a small piece of Seinfeld that he’s had forever.”

At the time of the deal, “Seinfeld” was only in its relatively low-rated third season, so no one expected the sitcom to become the cultural phenomenon we know today. But when the series was sold into syndication and nabbed the top spot in the Nielsen ratings, all involved, including Bannon, struck gold.

As The Wrap notes, if Bannon owned even 1 percent of the estimated 3.1 billion “Seinfeld” accrues in reruns, according to The Financial Times, then Bannon & Co. has probably earned around $ 31 million since the series was cancelled in 1998.

Bannon has reportedly since used these royalties to fund a bevy of endeavors like films such as “Fire from the Heartland: The Awakening of the Conservative Woman” and the ironically titled Sarah Palin documentary, “The Undefeated,” as well as Clinton Cash, a book indicting the Clinton Foundation for corrupt practices.

“It’s crazy,” Reiner said. “When I first heard about it, it made me sick. It makes me sick. Because I had no idea. I didn’t know who he was, or that he was representing Westinghouse. So there you have it. I think The Huffington Post had the headline right: ‘Trump Hires a White Supremacist.’”

Revolutionizing Accounting for Decision Making

Revolutionizing Accounting for Decision Making

This book combines multiple disciplines of lean and activity-based costing in a practical, easy-to-use way so that leaders can make informed decisions. Most of my life has been dealing with organizations that are in financial distress. Many financial decisions were based upon information that was technically accurate but simultaneously misleading or deceptive. Unfortunately, organizations are making decisions about selling divisions, shutting down product lines, moving facilities, and disrupting people’s lives without a clear understanding of the accuracy and the importance of those decisions. Individuals and their families have seen lives shattered because of suspect information. As a certified public accountant (CPA), we pride ourselves that our responsibility is to the public. We clearly state in our code of ethics that we have a responsibility to the collective well-being of the people that we serve. That is a daunting responsibility. We also have a responsibility to be objective. Objectivity requires us to be impartial, intellectually honest, and free of conflicts of interest and material bias. The principles of lean, activity-based costing, marketing, strategic planning, and traditional financial reporting are combined using existing systems so that decision-makers can be armed with accurate financial information. Activity-based costing is a process-oriented, systematic approach to attribute cost to the activities for which an organization is engaged to accomplish it strategic mission. An understanding of the organization’s mission is essential for an accurate understanding of the nature of costs. The entire concept of activity based costing and going lean is designed to support the governance responsibilities of management. Our revolutionary approach to accounting for decision making will result in a rethinking of accounting and information system to enable leaders to make more informed decisions.

Making a Comeback

Melissa Lawrence is a born athlete, dedicated to her body and not in the ways fellow college guys would prefer. She’s achieved more success through athletic pursuits like marathon running and endurance events than most will in a lifetime, but recent setbacks have pushed her frustration to new extremes.A freak accident resulted in a torn calf muscle, something she would recover from but struggle with, especially given how hard Melissa always pushed herself. Going well beyond the training recommended by her doctors, Melissa spent three solid months preparing, training, doing the best she could to heal faster and stronger. An athletic coed like Melissa had a body firm and fit, even sweaty from a race able to toss her hair and make models jealous, but for Melissa Lawrence that wasn’t good enough. She wanted to make the headlines again in sports. She wanted to be the comeback kid, to be known all over for her ability to make a real comeback. After training one day with fellow college student, Danny, Melissa has an idea, and an admittedly off the wall idea. Having been training on the trails of the forest that cover much of the old college town, she spots a place rumored and storied among the locals, an old stone house in the forest. The man who lives in that home is supposedly some feared old wizard, people saying he performs all sorts of dark magic and makes potions from his wooded cabin home. Melissa’s idea is a simple one, go and actually meet this old man, ask for a potion, one to make her the comeback she has dreamed of being, the biggest comeback in the world, the comeback kid. Of course as her friend, Danny, points out, the odds are it’s just a creepy old crazy guy and the potions are nothing. As Melissa puts it, even the thought that it might work could be just enough to push her that extra mile, over the hill she has been struggling to recover and train towards. Mind over matter is better than not trying, so reluctantly dragging Danny along, Melissa Lawrence treks th

Your Spouse’s Unhealthy Habits Could Be Making You Fat, Study Says

(Reuters Health) – Need another reason to blame weight gain on your marriage? When one spouse becomes obese, the other’s risk of obesity almost doubles, a U.S. study suggests.

“Normal weight people whose spouses went from being normal weight to obese were more likely to become obese,” said Laura Cobb, who led the study as a researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

“This suggests that changes in one spouse are likely to also be reflected in the other spouse, likely because of similar changes in diet, physical activity or other behaviors that impact obesity,” Cobb said by email.

Plenty of research already links marriage and weight gain, and scientists have firmly established the connection between obesity and heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

What the current study adds is a fresh take on how couples may gain weight in tandem, insight that might help shape more effective obesity prevention and treatment efforts targeting couples, Cobb and colleagues note in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Researchers followed almost 4,000 couples for up to 25 years, starting between 1987 and 1989. After an initial exam, they had three follow-up visits roughly three years apart, followed by a fifth exam between 2011 and 2013.

At the start of the study, 23 percent of the men and 25 percent of the women were obese.

Non-obese men whose wives became obese between visits in the study were 78 percent more likely to become obese during that period than they would have been had their wives not gained so much weight, the study found.

Having a husband become obese was linked to an 89 percent increased risk of developing obesity for their wives.

Not many people who started out obese lost enough weight to be considered no longer obese, but when they did, their spouse was also more likely to become non-obese.

Shortcomings of the study include the long stretch of time that elapsed between the fourth and fifth exams and the large proportion of people who died or left the study before the final visit, the authors acknowledge.

It’s not unusual for married couples to forge common habits over time that influence their weight, said Ivanka Prichard, a weight loss researcher at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia.

“Over time, similarities in diet, particularly any unhealthy aspects, may lead to weight changes,” Prichard, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. “There are also a range of pressures in life that could impact this such as having children, work, shared health knowledge, time or finances.”

Like unhealthy habits, though, positive lifestyle choices can also be contagious in a marriage, said Debra Umberson, director of the Population Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

“When married people get in shape or lose weight, it’s often because one spouse takes the lead and urges the other spouse along,” Umberson, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. “Even if the person not taking the lead is resistant, over time they will probably be influenced by the kinds of food and activities their spouse is involved with – especially if the person taking the lead is the one who purchases groceries or prepares meals.”

‘Manufactured’ Masculinity: Making Imperial Manliness, Morality and Militarism

‘Manufactured’ Masculinity should be considered essential reading for scholars in the humanities and social sciences at every level and in all parts of the academic world. It weaves together brilliantly the elements of the ‘manufacture’ of masculinity in the period world-famous ‘public’ school system for the privileged which serviced the largest empire, the world has ever known, at the zenith of its control and which has had a significant influence in the formation of the modern world. This authoritative study of the making of British imperial masculinity shines light on the period of Muscular Christianity, Social Darwinism and Militarism as meshed ideological instruments of both power and persuasion.

This magisterial study reveals the extraordinary and paramount influence of games fields as the ‘machine tools’ in an ‘industrial process’ with the schools as ‘workshops’ containing ‘cultural conveyor-belts’ for the production of robust, committed and confident servants of empire, and templates for imperial reproduction in imperial possessions. Mainly on efficient ‘production belt’ playing fields of the privileged minds were moulded, attitudes were constructed and bodies shaped – for imperial manhood. Earlier ‘manliness’ was metamorphosized, morality was redefined and militarism at the high point of imperial grandeur was an adjunct. Professor Mangan outlines this unique process of cultural conditioning with a unique range of evidence and analysis.

This book was published as a special double issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.
