Social Media Has a Lot to Say About Nars’ Phallic Lipstick Campaign

Nars is taking risqué marketing to the next level. The 25-year-old beauty company, best known for its Orgasm blush — among other shade names that are sexual innuendos — has social media abuzz over its newest campaign. Nars posted the raunchy video — which shows a nude lipstick melting into the phallic shape — to its Instagram account with the caption: “When the nudes keep you up all night.” Social media was quick to react, with many expressing their shock at the campaign. Model Chrissy Teigen, for one, poked fun at the campaign on her Twitter account. honestly in love with this color and now I must have it to soften my boner — christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) August 12, 2019 “The View” cohost Meghan McCain for another, responded to the video campaign, claiming the brand’s blush is her favorite to use. The Best Social Media Reactions to the ‘Cats’ Trailer

The “Cats” trailer is finally here, and the Internet isn’t too happy about it.
When it was announced that the beloved musical would be given the live-action treatment, musical theater lovers rejoiced. But many have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment — and downright terror — toward the film’s first trailer.

The trailer features a number of A-list actors and musicians, including Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Idris Elba and Dame Judi Dench, among others, who appear as felines with human-like faces and bodies. The film’s director, Tom Hooper — best known for directing films like “Les Misérables” and “The King’s Speech” — has called the technique “digital fur technology.”
Many commenters are poking fun at said technology, comparing the actors to other iterations of this anthropomorphism in film, including in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” where Emma Watson’s character, Hermione Granger, accidentally transforms into a cat, and Mike Myers’ take on “The Cat in the Hat.” Others have taken liberty with the trailer by adding in their own edits, like one user who cut in the song from Jordan Peele’s horror film, “Us,” over the “Cats” trailer.

Celebrities Drive Social Media Mentions Amid Gun Control Protests

This weekend’s March for Our Lives gun control protests generated strong social media traffic, according to analytics firm Talkwalker, which tracked posts in a 24-hour period through to Saturday at 3 p.m. Eastern time.
Within that period, there were more than 2 million social posts related to the protests, and the firm noted that celebrities helped drive the bulk of the traffic. According to #NeverAgain, organizers of the protests, which was in response to a school shooting in Florida last month, there were over 800 separate events held with most kicking off at noon local time on Saturday.
In Washington, organizers estimated over 500,000 participants. Celebrities in attendance who spoke and performed included Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Hudson. In New York City, Paul McCartney spoke to participants, encouraging their cause, according to media reports.
Talkwalker said the top social post on Saturday, March 24 was from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson with an Instagram post that had over 400,000 likes. By Sunday morning, the post had over 1.1 million likes.
“I’ll always stand for open dialogue and action – it’s the only way to ensure bad history doesn’t repeat itself,” Johnson said in the post. “When it comes to protecting our children, all bets are off

Hiss! Taylor Swift Teases Return with Yet Another Slithery Social Media Tease

Taylor Swift has returned — to social media, at least.

Three days after going dark on social media, the popstar reopened her accounts Monday morning, though the purpose remains murky thus far.

Swift shared a mysterious 10-second video on her social media accounts at 11 a.m. — her first post since her accounts were scrubbed on Friday. The distorted, silent clip appears to depict a snake tail (though some social media users also compared the image to a cat or dragon tail). Swift presented the footage without any caption. A second, longer clip — with another piece of the tail — went up at 11 a.m. Tuesday. In the latest post, which went up at 10 a.m. Wednesday, the serpent’s head was revealed.

The strange clips come as speculation swirls that Swift is preparing to release her sixth studio album and first full-length record since 2014’s massive 1989. Last Friday, she caused a fan frenzy as she removed her profile pictures from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook and deleted all her posts from Instagram and Twitter. Rumor has it the new song may debut Friday, along with a music video, followed by an MTV VMAs appearance on Sunday in Los Angeles.

Swifties have been impatiently anticipating new solo music from the Grammy winner, who previously released a new album every two years.

Rumors have percolated that Swift may share a new song at 2 p.m. ET on Monday. Some have suggested that this timing was designed to coincide with the solar eclipse. (However, as of 3:15 p.m. EST, Swift had yet to share anything more.)

“Wildest Dreams” director Joseph Kahn retweeted the clip with a simple smiley face, then added, “In 30 minutes, as a show of power, Taylor Swift will blot out the sun.”

RELATED VIDEO: Will Taylor Swift Be Releasing New Album?

Aside from a high-profile trial in Denver against David Mueller, a former radio deejay host who was recently found guilty of assault and battery against Swift for groping her during a meet-and-greet photo session in 2013, the star has been largely under the radar.

A source told PEOPLE in May Swift — who wrote Little Big Town’s “Better Man” last year and released her hit song “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” (with Zayn Malik) in January — was hard at work on her new music.

“She is very excited about her new album,” said the source. “She can’t wait to share with her fans later this year.”

Put your celeb and pop culture knowledge to the test and download PEOPLE and Zynga’s Crosswords with Friends!

The star told Vogue in 2016 she was “going to live my life a little bit without the pressure on myself to create something” and focus on some short-term goals, like learning how to make a “good drink” and getting CPR-certified.

Aunt Viv Of ‘Fresh Prince’ Calls Co-Star A ‘Media Hoe’ After Reunion Photo

This sitcom feud just got refreshed.

The day after a photo emerged of the cast of “The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air” reuniting at the beach, one left-out actress lashed out big-time.

Janet Hubert, who played Aunt Vivian for three seasons before tensions led to her departure, wrote a scathing message Tuesday on Facebook in which she called Carlton Banks actor Alfonso Ribeiro a “media hoe” and an “ass wipe” for star Will Smith. She also pledged to up her efforts to pitch to Hollywood her memoir about the “behind the scenes story” of the show.

Here’s a screenshot of a portion of the post:

There is no love lost between Hubert and Smith and Co. She was replaced on “Fresh Prince” by Daphne Maxwell Reid in 1993. Reid appeared in this week’s viral picture of the beaming cast.

Always amazing to spend an afternoon with my Fresh Prince family. Wishing that James Avery was still with us to make this complete.

A post shared by Alfonso Ribeiro (@therealalfonsoribeiro) on

Smith told an Atlanta radio station in 1993 that Hubert “wanted the show to be ‘The Aunt Viv of Bel-Air Show’ because I know she is going to dog me in the press.”

The snipes have erupted from time to time over the years. In 2016, Hubert even slammed Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, for urging a boycott of the Oscars to protest the lack of nominations for people of color.

Donald Trump Begs The Media For ‘Mercy’ In This Shawn Mendes Mashup

President Donald Trump just wants some “Mercy” from the media.

POTUS appears to ask the press, who last week he dubbed “an enemy of the American people,” to lay off him in this mashup of Shawn Mendes’ hit ballad.

YouTube channel TrumpSings cut footage of Trump’s speeches with an instrumental version of the Canadian singer’s track.

The parody video kicks off with Trump blasting the media for trying to “attack our administration because they’re not happy for whatever reason.”

“Please have mercy on me, take it easy on my heart,” he then sings. “Even though you don’t mean to hurt me, you keep tearing me apart.”

Don’t Quit Social Media

2017-01-17-1484680456-6848554-yxvkh7n8asojacobwalti.jpg

I’m back!

I spent nearly half a year without Facebook (had access to Facebook Messenger), Linkedin, Twitter and other social networks. No media as well, except financial outlets for work reasons. In other words, all this time I lived in digital abstinence and isolation.

The result? You tell me. I didn’t experience a bliss or found a deeper meaning of life. My happiness dropped, productivity stayed flat at best. I lost touch with reality and couldn’t separate my work from my personal life. I lost connection with my friends, motivation, and aspirations.

We all know it, but this experience drilled it into me once and for all: Humans are just wired to connect. Yet, in this technology-driven, globalized word, we interact in person less.

Social media and messaging apps won’t replace face-to-face interaction, but you want it or not, now that’s the way it is. It’s the new means of communication that will only take a bigger part of our lives as we move forward in this age. You have to embrace it.

The problem is not the medium but its addictive and toxic nature. For some reason – I’m sure scientists have already answered that – people get hooked on this thing really bad.

There’s also a lot of noise out there. The bulk of information is worthless and emotionally harmful. The intent behind most updates is just a self-seeking cry for recognition, praise, support, admiration, validation, which adds no value to your life.

But there are also people who broadcast beautiful things. Thoughts that inspire and challenge your perspective. Successes that drive competition in a positive way. Conversations that lead change. Personalities that put a smile on your face.

Why should I and you miss out on all of this?

We don’t quit the world because there are bad people out there. We ignore and avoid them. People on social media are the same, the medium is just different.

Isolation is no answer, that’s my main takeaway here. I’m sorry but that’s all I’ve got. There’s no point to quit social media entirely, just on principle. Just because some people say stupid things. That’s selfish, stupid, and adds no value.

Instead, mute the toxic noise in your feed and follow people who push you forward as a lover, a founder, a father, a human being or whoever you strive to be. Oh, and don’t engage in social networks during your peak productivity hours and you’ll be fine.

Social media gives you easy access. It’s you choice what and how much to take from it.

Digital Media Sport

Digital Media Sport

Live broadband streaming of the 2008 Beijing Olympics accounted for 2,200 of the estimated 3,600 total hours shown by the American NBC-Universal networks. At the 2012 London Olympics, unprecedented multi-platforming embraced online, mobile devices, game consoles and broadcast television, with the BBC providing 2,500 hours of live coverage, including every competitive event, much in high definition and some in 3D. The BBC also had 12 million requests for video on mobile phones and 9.2 million browsers on its mobile Olympics website and app. This pattern will only intensify at future sport mega events like the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics, both of which will take place in Brazil. Increasingly, when people talk of the screen that delivers footage of their favorite professional sport, they are describing desktop, laptop, and tablet computer screens as well as television and mobile handsets. Digital Media Sport analyzes the intersecting issues of technological change, market power, and cultural practices that shape the contemporary global sports media landscape. The complexity of these related issues demands an interdisciplinary approach that is adopted here in a series of thematically-organized essays by international scholars working in media studies, Internet studies, sociology, cultural studies, and sport studies. .

Media Psychology

Media Psychology

Media Psychology examines the impact that 21st century media use has on human behavior, from teenage crushes on pop stars to soap fandom in adulthood. It brings together North American communication research with European media research in a variety of disciplines-psychology, sociology, communication and media studies-and in doing so, maps out the territory for media psychology. David Giles argues that psychologists have been guilty of ignoring the influence of the media over the last century, seeing it at best as a minor nuisance that will eventually go away. However, with the increasing prevalence of new electronic forms of mass communication, the media seem to have a greater influence than ever over our daily lives. In this book, Dr. Giles tackles the traditional topics of media psychology-sex, violence, advertising-along with sections on developmental aspects of media influence and the psychology of the audience. He also examines a number of specific media genres-news, sports, soaps, and the increasingly popular audience participation media, such as “reality” and “lifestyle” television. In addition, he asks what light psychology can shed on the popularity of these genres and the response of their audiences. Finally, there are chapters on the increasing influence of the Internet and on the representation of psychology and psychologists themselves in the media.

Advertising Menswear: Masculinity and Fashion in the British Media Since 1945

In what was a golden age of British advertising, the notion of the ‘peacock male’ was a strong theme in fashion promotion, reflecting a new affluence and the emergence of stylish youth cultures. Based on a detailed study of rich archival material, this pioneering study examines the production, circulation and consumption of print, television and cinema publicity for men’s clothing in Britain during the second half of the twentieth century. The study explores design issues and period style in advertising, the role of market research and consumer psychology in determining target audiences, the idea of the ‘new man’ in representing fashionable masculinities, and the various ways that menswear retailers and brands dealt with sex and gender, race, class and age. From y-fronts to Austin Reed suits to Levi’s jeans, menswear advertising epitomised the themes, stereotypes, contradictions and ambiguities of masculinity in an age of great social change. This meticulously researched and detailed work of scholarship will be essential reading for students and scholars of fashion, history, sociology, advertising, media, cultural and gender studies.

“Over 90 percent of media coverage [during the 2016 presidential race] was not about the issues that impact your lives,” he said, citing “a variety of studies.”

Instead, he continued, the stories “were about Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. They were about political gossip. They were about polls. They were about fundraising. They were about stupid things that people said 20 years ago. What we must demand of a media is that they start covering the issues that impact our lives. Not just the candidates’ lives.”

Sanders was in town to promote his new book, Our Revolution, named for the political action group that grew out of the senator’s progressive platform. Speaking to a crowd of seated audience members in Manhattan’s Cooper Union, he took what he called “corporate media” to task for its failure to cover the 2016 presidential campaign season in “a serious way.” During the speech, Sanders echoed sentiments outlined in the last chapter of his book, a section titled “Corporate Media and the Threat to Our Democracy.”

“If media does not accept its responsibility to talk about the reality facing the American people […] that is a real threat to the future of American democracy,” he told his supporters Tuesday night.

Mr. Trump does not have a mandate to carry out his extremist ideas and we should not forget that for a second.
Senator Bernie Sanders

In his book, published on Nov. 15 by Thomas Dunne Books, he cites an early experience with “the nature of the media’s political coverage,” recounting the time Vermont news outlets focused their attention on a candidate for state representative who skied around the state to meet voters, downplaying the actual issues affecting voters. “If corporate media won’t change,” Sanders writes in the final pages of his book, “start new media.”

The issues that impact our lives, Sanders reiterated throughout his hourlong talk, include access to healthcare and higher education, the disappearance of the middle class, criminal justice reform, immigration reform, and climate change. He urged his followers to pay attention to these concerns, going so far as to point out three subjects on which American citizens should refuse to compromise: bigotry, democracy and climate change.

Sanders was introduced on Tuesday night by the actor and activist Harry Belafonte, who described the election of Donald Trump as “weird.” Belafonte was in turn introduced by Strand Bookstore owner Nancy Bass Wyden, who praised Sanders’ “action-oriented ideas for progressives who want to reclaim power in America.” Strand hosted the event at Cooper Union.

The Huffington Post streamed the entire speech live on Facebook Tuesday night. You can read more excerpts from Sanders’ talk, below.

On Donald Trump:

“In terms of the popular vote, Mr. Trump lost that to Secretary Clinton by almost three million votes. […] Mr. Trump does not have a mandate to carry out his extremist ideas and we should not forget that for a second.”

On the progressive agenda:

“On virtually every major issue impacting the American people, it turns out that a significant majority of the American people support the progressive agenda. I want all of you to know […] that you’re not heroes and heroines fighting some great uphill struggle out on the vanguard. What your views are, by and large, represent where the American people are on issue after issue.”

On voter suppression:

“What you have in Republican states all over this country is you have Republican governors who are too cowardly to participate in free and fair and open elections. They are working overtime to deny poor people, old people, young people, people of color the right to vote. Massive levels of voter suppression.”

On Trump’s cabinet nominations:

“Mr. Trump nominated for Secretary of State the head of ExxonMobil. He appointed or nominated as head of the Environmental Protection Agency someone who does not even believe in the reality of climate change. And on this issue, as on many other issues, what we have got to do as a nation is […] we have got to bring millions and millions of people together to tell Mr. Trump that we’re not going back to bigotry, that we’re going to protect American democracy, and that we are going to transform our energy system, whether ExxonMobil likes it or not.”

On why Hillary Clinton and Democratic congressmen lost:

“There are a lot of reasons why, but I’ll tell you what I think a key reason is ― is that the Democrats failed to understand that, while it is true, absolutely, that we are better off today economically than we were eight years ago when Bush left office, no debate about that, there’s another truth. And that truth is that there are millions and millions of people, often in rural areas, in inner cities, who are hurting today very, very badly. They are in real pain. This is a pain that you don’t see on television. […] The word poverty comes out of the mouths of very few elected officials.”

On the future of the Democratic Party:

“I think we need a fundamental transformation of the Democratic Party. I am not here tonight to, you know, knock people […] but I think it is very clear that the current approach ― the current way the Democratic Party has done business simply has failed and we need a very new direction.”

De-Convergence of Global Media Industries

De-Convergence of Global Media Industries

Convergence has become a buzzword, referring on the one hand to the integration between computers, television, and mobile devices or between print, broadcast, and online media and on the other hand, the ownership of multiple content or distribution channels in media and communications. Yet while convergence among communications companies has been the major trend in the neoliberal era, the splintering of companies, de-convergence, is now gaining momentum in the communications market. As the first comprehensive attempt to analyze the wave of de-convergence of the global media system in the context of globalization, this book makes sense of those transitions by looking at global trends and how global media firms have changed and developed their business paradigm from convergence to de-convergence. Jin traces the complex relationship between media industries, culture, and globalization by exploring it in a transitional yet contextually grounded framework, employing a political economic analysis integrating empirical data analysis.

‘Hamilton’ Faces Social Media Backlash From Confused Pro-Trump Critics

There’s “Hamilton,” the hit Broadway musical seen by Vice President-elect Mike Pence on Friday. And there’s Hamilton, the Canadian city which has a theater donning the same name. One is @HamiltonMusical on Twitter; the other, @HamiltonTheatre

It’s not hard to see how right-wing supporters might confuse the two. After President-elect Donald Trump criticized “Hamilton” over the weekend for delivering a political message to Pence from the stage, supporters aimed dozens of angry tweets at the Canadian theater instead of the New York production.

“If they only had looked at our profile, it says Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, several times. That just goes to show something about hate-mongering on the internet and the lack of effort people put forward,” Riane Leonard, who handles the theater company’s Twitter account, told local news outlet The Hamilton Spectator.

“Hamilton,” the musical, covers Founding Father Alexander Hamilton’s role in the establishment of the United States and is comprised primarily of actors of color. After Friday’s performance at New York’s Richard Rodgers Theatre, star Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, voiced a message for Pence from the show’s cast and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Trump later called it “very rude” in his demand for an apology while Pence did not mind the speech at all.

“We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights,” Dixon said.

Trump’s criticism of what he called an “overrated” show mobilized his followers online ― and offline.

Hashtags including #BoycottHamilton and #BanHamilton trended over the weekend, with supporters dredging up an insensitive, 4-year-old tweet by Dixon to wield as a morality critique of the production he joined in August.

The actor appeared on CBS This Morning Monday to defend his message.

“There’s nothing to apologize for,” Dixon stated, later adding, “Conversation is not harassment.”

During a Saturday performance of “Hamilton” in Chicago, a front-row audience member reportedly yelled profanities and political statements after the line “Immigrants ― we get the job done” in the song “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)” and during another number, before being escorted out of the theater.

Feminism, Labour and Digital Media

Feminism, Labour and Digital Media

There is a contradiction at the heart of digital media. We use commercial platforms to express our identity, to build community and to engage politically. At the same time, our status updates, tweets, videos, photographs and music files are free content for these sites. We are also generating an almost endless supply of user data that can be mined, re-purposed and sold to advertisers. As users of the commercial web, we are socially and creatively engaged, but also labourers, exploited by the companies that provide our communication platforms. How do we reconcile these contradictions? Feminism, Labour and Digital Media argues for using the work of Marxist feminist theorists about the role of domestic work in capitalism to explore these competing dynamics of consumer labour. It uses the concept of the Digital Housewife to outline the relationship between the work we do online and the unpaid sphere of social reproduction. It demonstrates how feminist perspectives expand our critique of consumer labour in digital media. In doing so, the Digital Housewife returns feminist inquiry from the margins and places it at the heart of critical digital media analysis.

Media Secrets: How to Write the Ultimate Media Pitch 42 Tips To Free Publicity – Publicize Yourself, Your Web Site, Your Book or Products

Media Secrets: How to Write the Ultimate Media Pitch 42 Tips To Free Publicity – Publicize Yourself, Your Web Site, Your Book or Products

Publicizing your book, Web site or products can be a daunting task if you don’t know what you are doing. I’m not talking about you budding fiction writers out there trying to emulate Mary Shelly, Stephen King, John Grisham and Mark Twain. These established fiction writers have a built in audience, they don’t have to go out and try and promote their new or other books. They already have a fan base to market to.I’m talking about nonfiction writing. And nonfiction is the easiest way to get started in your writing career. Everybody has at least one book in their heads that is just waiting to be written. Even if you can’t write a lick, there are sites out there for out sourcing your final manuscript – site such as vworker.com or elance.com. Anybody can do an outline with bullet-points. Once you have an outline complete, go out and hire a ghostwriter to finish the product. Think you can’t make any money with your book? Think again. Today’s ease of getting your book published as an independent publisher on Amazon.com and other online sites makes publishing nonfiction easy-as-pie. But the book part of your journey is just the beginning. Ok, it’s nice to sell a few books daily on Amazon.com – so you make – per day. Multiply that by ten or a hundred, and you have a nice little living. But what if you wanted to do what the zillionaires of the writing world do?Promote, promote and then promote some more. And the best and cheapest way to promote is through an information starved media. The media is everywhere, 24/7 365 days per year, and they need information and content for their info starved audience. This is where you come in. Find and isolate your audience through a relevant media, then promote the crap out of yourself and your products. Most writers are lucky to make 00 per book. What do the “real lucky” ones do? They promote. Writing books is just a sideline – your real job is to promote.

Depictions of Women in Media

Depictions of Women in Media

According to Webster’s Dictionary, media is ‘a medium of cultivation, conveyance, or expression’1. It contains newspapers, magazines, television, radio, the internet, video games, and much more. Undoubtedly, not only men but also women appear in media. Along with it, women are bombarded by lots of media pictures every day, nowadays. Those pictures present women who are beautiful only if they are slim, pretty, and culturally accepted. In the opinion of the viewers, television is supposed to be the medium that is most ‘real’. In that case, one has to question the correctness of the images of women on television and how this affects the attitudes of the viewers. Advertisements are probably the most influential products on television. Here, women are mainly pictured as a housewife who is married, with children, and who is obsessed with cleanliness or as a sex object who is tall, with long legs, wonderful teeth, hair, and skin. Similarly, the image of women as sex objects can be found in other media such as magazines, music clips, or video games. One can find many examples for each. Thus, Britany Spears hardly wears any clothes in her music videos and men who are shown in the background of music clips are fully clothed while women in the same position are close to be naked2. If you have look at computer games you won`t find many women in it but if so they are very much sexualized – ‘wearing tight revealing clothes and having unrealistically large breasts, and distorted small waists’3 – such as Lara Croft. This paper will deal with those images of women and consequently the effects of them. Concerning the effects this work will concentrate on the increasing prevalence of plastic surgery, especially among teenagers, eating disorders, and low self-esteem nowadays. 1 Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (1997), 10th edition.
