Grammys 2019 Fashion Review: Cardi B on the Half Shell, Michelle Obama on Stage

Typically, it’s awards season’s loudest red carpet. But Sunday night’s Grammys fashion was unusually quiet — and covered up.
Without Beyonce, Rihanna, Taylor Swift or Ariana Grande, who ditched the awards show after creative differences with producers but wore her Zac Posen gown on Instagram anyway, the diva quotient was down, with only Cardi B’s meme-generating vintage 1995 Thierry Mugler Venus-on-the-half-shell look, and Janelle Monae’s sharp-shouldered Jean Paul Gaultier couture mini dress to get armchair critics going.
Even Lady Gaga, who famously arrived at the 2011 Grammys in an Armani egg pod, played it relatively safe (she’s a movie star now, after all), wearing a silver, side-ruffle gown by Hedi Slimane for Celine (a no-brainer given that she attended his first women’s ready-to-wear show last October).
Long gone were the nearly nude looks of years past; instead of baring her naval in daring green Versace circa 2000, Jennifer Lopez went with a modest, crystal-embellished mint green Ralph and Russo column gown, and covered her face with a wide-brim hat; Miley Cyrus worked an oversized circa 2019 Mugler suit with a side of cleavage, and, as WWD reported, H.E.R. was outfitted in a custom Coach purple jacquard jumpsuit.

Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Are Not Inviting Barack and Michelle Obama to Their Wedding

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are keeping politics out of their upcoming royal wedding.

“It has been decided that an official list of political leaders – both U.K. and international – is not required for Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s wedding. Her Majesty’s Government was consulted on this decision, which was taken by The Royal Household,” a Kensington Palace spokesman said Tuesday.

Their decision to omit world leaders from their guest list means former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama will not be attending the May 19 ceremony at Windsor Castle, PEOPLE understands.

While Harry and Meghan have become close to the couple (these photos of BFFs Harry and Michelle are proof!), their guest list is being reserved for long-standing friends they have known for years.

Even though Barack and Michelle won’t be at their wedding, Harry and Meghan have plans to visit with the Obamas in the near future.

“Both the couples look forward to seeing each other soon,” adds a royal source.

Harry has become close to Michelle in recent years through their mutual work on behalf of veterans. Barack also supported Harry’s Invictus Games in Toronto last September.

The absence of dignitaries at the wedding also means President Donald Trump and senior British politicians will not be invited.

“Those in attendance will be people who one or both of the couple has a existing direct relationship with,” adds a royal source.

Whereas royal heir Prince William‘s wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011 had world leaders and dignitaries in attendance, a similar list of prominent guests is “not required” for Harry, who is currently fifth-in-line to the throne (and soon to be sixth with the birth of William and Kate’s third child later this month). If there are senior members of other royal families invited to the wedding, it will be because Harry has a close relationship with them.

Insiders also note that William and Kate wed in the grand Westminster Abbey in front of about 1,900 invitees, but Harry and Meghan’s venue at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle is much smaller and will have around 600 guests. “It will still be a royal wedding and an important occasion,” the royal source adds.

The palace also released the names of some of the lucky 1,200 members of the public who have been invited from around the U.K. to the grounds of Windsor Castle for an up-close view of their wedding day. The special guests were chosen from “young people who have shown strong leadership, and those who have served their communities,” the palace says in a statement.

Another 200 guests will come from charities linked with Meghan and Harry, including WellChild for seriously ill kids and the Invictus Games for sick and injured veterans and serving military members. There will also be 100 children from two local schools – the Royal School, situated in the Great Park of Windsor, and St. George’s School, below the castle.

Michelle Yeoh Will Appear in ‘Crazy Rich Asian’ Film Adaptation

In honor of Taiwanese brand Shiatzy Chen’s 40th anniversary, friends and fans of the house took over the basement of the Palais de Tokyo, painted in vivid colors. In the front row was a mix of up-and-coming faces such as “Reign” and “Teen Wolf” actress Adelaide Kane or French actress Luna Besson, but also industry heavyweight Michelle Yeoh.
The opulent collection would fit right into Yeoh’s upcoming role as Eleanor Sung-Young in “Crazy Rich Asians,” directed by Jon M. Chu and adapted from Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel of the same name. She will also star a comedy director and respected action choreographer’s Yuen Woo-Ping.
Comedic value aside, the Asian action star is a firm supporter of women empowerment. “[Helping women being financially independent] helps families and nations to grow,” she said.

PEOPLE Explains: Michelle Carter Faces Up to 20 Years for Urging Boyfriend Via Texts to Kill Himself

Today Michelle Carter will learn whether her encouragement of her 18-year-old boyfriend’s 2014 suicide will result in leniency or a long time behind bars.

Carter, then 17, was convicted in June of involuntary manslaughter for urging Conrad Roy III, 18, through texts and phone conversations to kill himself, even as the young man who battled depression told her he wanted to abandon his plan.

Now 20, Carter faces up to 20 years in prison.

Here are six things to know about the case.

1. Conrad Died of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Roy, from Fairhaven, Massachusetts, was known to his friends as a “funny, flirty” athlete who’d recently earned his sea captain’s license and dreamed of taking over his family’s marine towing and salvage business. But he also struggled with anxiety and depression and had previously attempted suicide.

On July 13, 2014, authorities found Roy’s body in his pickup truck, in a parking lot where, the night before, he had attached a hose to a portable generator to fill the cab with the carbon monoxide that killed him.

2. Michelle Carter Implored Roy to Go Through with His Suicide

Investigators soon discovered a series of text messages — eventually more than 1,000, according to prosecutors — sent in the week prior to Roy’s death and exchanged between him and Carter, who said that she was his girlfriend.

Among those were ones from her that stated: “You always say you’re gonna do it, but you never do. I just want to make sure tonight is the real thing,” “You just have to do it” and “It’s painless and quick.”

Police also found Carter’s subsequent written admission to a friend in which she recalled a phone call with Roy, who had exited his truck as it filled with toxic fumes. He told her that he was scared and didn’t want to abandon his family.

“Get back in,” Carter said she told him.

3. Her Lawyer Said She Shouldn’t Have Faced Criminal Charges

Carter’s attorney, Joseph Cataldo, doesn’t dispute that his client texted Roy — but he has said the messages were not criminal and did not rise to the level of manslaughter.

“A lot of what has been reported thus far is that Michelle Carter always wanted to endorse Conrad Roy’s plan to kill himself,” he previously told PEOPLE. “For weeks prior to agreeing to his plan, she tried to talk him out of it, and he tried to get her to commit suicide with him.”

Cataldo argued before Carter’s trial that the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, which allowed the manslaughter charge to proceed, wrongly expanded the crime’s definition to include an alleged killer who was not present at the scene.

He said the court also overlooked that Carter had previously tried to convince Roy not to kill himself.

“It is in the various text messages that she tells him that he should get help and go to McLean Hospital,” a psychiatric facility where Carter had also once been a patient, Cataldo told PEOPLE.

But, he said, Roy “rejected that, stating that she doesn’t understand that he just wants to die. And this was about three weeks prior to him killing himself.”

Cataldo also tried to dismiss the charge against Carter by arguing her texts were free speech protected by the First Amendment.

The Supreme Judicial Court disagreed, ruling that “it was apparent that the defendant understood the repercussions of her role in the victim’s death. Prior to his death, the defendant sought to have the victim delete the text messages between the two.”

4. Carter Told a Friend, ‘His Death Was My Fault’

Carter and Roy met several years before his suicide while on separate vacations to Florida; Carter was the granddaughter of a Roy family friend.

Though they lived about an hour apart — Roy in Fairhaven and Carter in Plainville, Massachusetts — the two stayed in touch through calls, emails and texts, Roy’s family and friends have said.

According to police, on July 10, 2014, three days before Roy was found dead, Carter began texting and emailing others and claiming that Roy was missing when she knew otherwise.

Investigators suspect this was part of a larger plot.

As stated in a police affidavit, “It is believed that Carter acted in this way because she was planning to continue to encourage Conrad to take his own life, so as a result she was beginning to put together a plan to get sympathy from her friends, which was evident because at this point she already started explaining that it’s her fault that Conrad is dead, even though he was still alive and speaking and texting with her regularly.”

On the day of Roy’s suicide, Carter texted a friend that “he just called me and there was a loud noise like a motor and I heard moaning like someone was in pain and he wouldn’t answer when I said his name I stayed on the phone for like 20 mins and that’s all I heard.”

She would later write to that same friend, apparently referring to Roy: “His death was my fault … he got out of the car, and I told him to get back in … because I knew he would do it all over again the next day.”

5. The Case Raised Complicated Legal Questions

Carter waived her right to a jury trial and placed her fate in the hands of a judge in Massachusetts’ Bristol County Juvenile Court.

Legal scholars watched closely as her case unfolded, and debated whether it was appropriate to bring criminal charges against someone for words and not actions.

“Prosecutors will have to prove that Carter Conrad Roy to kill himself and essentially caused his death,” Daniel Medwed, a law and criminal justice professor at Northeastern University, told The Washington Post ahead of the trial. “Defense lawyers are going to argue that he’s had suicidal tendencies predating their relationship. They’re going to emphasize that he was alone in his car, that ultimately it was his decision.”

He added, “She knew he was suicidal, but did she know that he was going to go through with it?”

6. The Judge Found Fault With Carter’s Failure to Intervene in Roy’s Final Moments

In his June ruling that found Carter guilty after a six-day trial, Massachusetts Juvenile Court Judge Lawrence Moniz zeroed in on Roy’s last moments, when he expressed his fears to Carter while his pickup filled with carbon monoxide.

“She Mr. Roy to get back into the truck, well-knowing of all of the feelings that he exchanged with her: his ambiguities, his fears, his concerns,” the judge said.

“She did nothing. She did not call the police or Mr. Roy’s family,” Moniz said of Carter. “Finally, she did not issue a simple additional instruction : ‘Get out of the truck.’”

During Carter’s trial, a psychiatrist testified that antidepressants prescribed to her before Roy died may have impeded her ability to empathize with others and make sound decisions. The judge said he did not find that credible.

After Roy’s body was discovered, Carter texted a friend to confess her role.

“I could have stopped it,” she wrote. “I was on the phone with him and he got out of the car because it was working and he got scared and I told him to get back in.”

Suicide Prevention: What to Know

Experts say some common warning signs of suicide include discussing a desire to die or feeling anxious or hopeless, like a burden, or trapped or in pain; withdrawing from others; extreme mood swings, including anger and recklessness; and abnormal sleep patterns (sleeping too much or too little).

Many suicides have multiple causes and are not triggered by one event, according to experts, who underline that suicidal crises can be overcome with help. Where mental illness is a factor, it can be treated.

Reaching out to those in need is a simple and effective preventative measure, experts say.

If you or someone you know is showing warning signs of suicide, consider contacting the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK, texting the Crisis Text Line at 741741 or seeking help from a professional.

Michelle Obama Reveals Barack Wore The Same Tuxedo For 8 Years

Barack Obama has emerged as an unlikely style icon of late thanks to his off-duty cool dad style. But there’s one thing about his wardrobe you may have missed over the course of his presidency: He’s a bonafide outfit repeater.

At least when it comes to state dinner garb, that is. Michelle Obama spoke at Apple’s developer’s conference in San Jose, California on Tuesday, and revealed that while the world scrutinized her state dinner gowns, her husband got away with wearing the same exact tuxedo and shoes over and over and over again during their eight years in the White House.

“This is the unfair thing,” she said. “You talk about Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, no matter what we do, he puts on that same tux. Now, people take pictures of the shoes I wear, the bracelets, the necklace ― They didn’t comment that for eight years he wore that same tux.”

There is no denying the disparity in coverage between the two Obamas and their fashion choices. To this day, people hang on every last detail of the former first lady’s wardrobe (and with good reason: She’s a great dresser). And yet, we’re just now learning about her husband’s repeat habit. Makes you think about the standards to which men and women are held when it comes to dressing for work, eh?

The president reveled in his repeat glory, Obama told Apple exec Lisa Jackson during the interview.

“He was proud of it too,” she said. “He’s like, ‘Mm, I’m ready. I’m ready in 10 minutes. Mm, how long did it take you?’ And I’m like, ‘Get out of here.’”

But no matter how long (or how short) the president took to get ready, there was always a little bit of room for improvement. Obama explained the story behind a viral 2015 photo in which she’s adjusting her husband’s bow tie.

“When the president from the visiting country and their spouse is coming is we greet them at the north portico,” she explained. “We were standing there waiting for the cars to roll in, and I was bored, so I sort of thought, ‘Let me make sure my husband looks good.’”

We love this outfit-repeating, relatable power couple more every day.

Last Words: Alexis Michelle Reflects On Her Time On ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’

Throughout the ninth season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Huffington Post Queer Voices will interview each departing queen on the Saturday following the air date of their elimination episode. Check HuffPost Queer Voices weekly to read about these queens’ reflections on their time on the show, as well as their legacies as queer artists and performers. Check out the previous interview with Jaymes MansfieldKimora BlacCharlie HidesEureka O’HaraCynthia Lee FontaineAjaFarrah MoanValentina and Nina Bo’nina Brown.

With only one more episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” before the reunion and season finale, we’ve really come down to the best of the best this season ― and we witnessed a top five who each deserved to be there for their own unique reasons.

However, someone has to go, and this week it was NYC queen Alexis Michelle. In a season lacking major drama or arch villains, Alexis often seemed to find herself at odds with the other girls these last few episodes. However, even during her shadiest moments broadcast on the show, Alexis always managed to come off as a professional and on top of her game and she scored a number of wins throughout the season.

It was Alexis’ NYC sister Peppermint who sent her packing this week, leaving us with a top four of Pep, Trinity Taylor, Shea Couleé and Sasha Velour. In this interview with HuffPost, Alexis reflects on her accomplishments while on the show, the season as a whole and what she wants to do with her platform as this season of “Drag Race” begins to draw to a close.

HuffPost: Looking back on “Drag Race” since you filmed last summer, how do you feel about the experience? Do you feel like you achieved everything you set out to achieve when you first hit the soundstage?

Alexis Michelle: If I really look back at it, I can’t say that I achieved everything that I was trying to achieve. I think I achieved a lot, but I’m known at home for being a very visual, polished queen and I feel like I brought an element of polish to the show ― but perhaps there were a couple of times where visually, whether it was the pressure or whether it was a bit of misjudgment, I maybe didn’t put my strongest foot forward. And, of course, I would’ve liked to go all the way to the top. So I can’t say I accomplished everything I set out to but I did accomplish at lot.

Is there look or a specific episode or element the show that you were the most proud of?

I definitely felt very proud of my performance in the Kardashian musical ― getting to work with Todrick Hall was such a dream come true. And I have such a fascination with Kris Jenner, so getting to portray her in the musical was so fun and I feel like that was a real shining moment. And, of course, the episode after that was Snatch Game and that was just a great time all around, both to be able to pay tribute to Liza [Minnelli] and to get to make RuPaul laugh. And then to get to do Breathless Mahoney [from “Dick Tracy”] for the Madonna runway was such a dream come true. A big full circle moment for sure.

How do you feel about your portrayal on the show, particularly towards the end of the season? These last few episodes seemed to portray you in somewhat villainous light. Do you think this portrayal is accurate?

Well, let me just clarify by saying I’m not calling any kind of shade on editing. I think that as the competition goes on, the pressure gets higher and stress levels get higher. And then, that being said, I felt a great friendship with all of my sisters and I think that perhaps in a season that really felt a lot like “RuPaul’s Best Friend Race” at times, if there was ever a moment of tension, that’s really going to stand out for people. So perhaps that’s where this perception is coming from but I assure you I was far from the shadiest person in the room [laughs].

As I’m sure you’ve gathered, so much of the show’s fan base now is made up of young teen and preteen girls. Why do you think “Drag Race” resonates so profoundly with this demographic of viewers?

I think that “Drag Race” speaks to a lot of young people in particular because young people in their adolescence are at a time when they’re really defining who they are and drag is all about self expression of who you are. As I’ve been out in the world and I’ve met a lot of these young fans, it’s become clear to me that the inspiration they derive is in us being able to live as ourselves so fully. And I think that to a young person who is figuring themselves out and really defining who they are in the world, that is where the inspiration comes from about living fully, living truthfully and very glamorously, at that. A lot of these young boys and girls love make-up among other things and getting to see us express ourselves so visually, I imagine, is very stimulating.

With “Drag Race” being aired on VH1 this season, do you see any political implications with the show being on such a mainstream network at this moment in history? What are your thoughts about that whole shift?

The move to VH1 is definitely indicative of the fact that the show is more popular than ever and will probably continue to gain popularity. With the move to VH1 we basically doubled the number of people that view the show and that’s really huge and major. And it’s very exciting. I’m glad that perhaps in reaching more people that it’s also reaching people that may not have watched it before. Maybe it’s now more of a mixed crowd watching the show, and I think that’s helpful in the world because connection is what the world lacks a lot of the time and it’s what the world needs the most, I think, is connection.

What do you want to do with the platform that “Drag Race” has given you?

There’s so much that I want to accomplish personally when it comes to acting and singing on stage and on screen. I know that expressing myself in that way does do a lot for a lot of people, as I’ve learned in my travels. But I also just want to make sure that if I have this visibility I can use it to speak my truth politically. We’re in such a time of unrest – and for good reason because there’s a lot of crap going down in the world socially and politically. So if there’s anything I can do to bring light to the right side of history than that’s what I want to do.

Out of everyone left in the competition who are you rooting for?

It’s such a hard question because even with the girls that left previously in the competition there were such good contenders. Any of these girls that are left could win – I kind of want them all to win for different reasons. I love that Trinity represents pageantry and polish but she showed herself to be such a diverse competitor by coming out in very different kinds of looks as well as doing really awesome in acting challenges. I think Shea is so well-versed and well-rounded as a queen. I love that Sasha brought something so intellectual and artistic to the show but so polished at the same. It really never felt rough around the edges with Sasha. And Peppermint is just such a tour de force. You’ve got to see her live – she just sparkles on stage and lights up the room when she’s on the microphone. It’s so hard to say – there’s really something great about all of them.

What do you want people to know and understand about who Alexis Michelle is as an artist going forward?

The first thing everybody should know about me is that I am here to entertain and make you feel great – well, to make you feel. It’s not just about feeling great, it’s about making you feel. Entertainment can sometimes be about distracting from the harsh realities of the world but I say, for me, I want you to feel good, I want you to slip away from all that, but I also want to hold the mirror up to society and perhaps make you think a little bit. And beyond that ― beyond entertaining I want people to know that I’m here to spread love. I think that’s what the world is missing when it gets messed up and that’s my message – just like RuPaul says, “Everybody say love!”

Trump Slammed Michelle Obama For Not Covering Hair In Saudi Arabia, But…

Donald Trump’s old tweets keep coming back to haunt him. This time, they followed him to Saudi Arabia, during his first trip overseas as President of the United States.

In 2015, half a year before he announced he was running for president, Trump criticized then-First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama for not wearing a headscarf over her hair during a trip to Saudi Arabia.

But when Trump and his family visited the Islamic nation this weekend, people noticed that his wife Melania Trump and daughter Ivanka Trump did the exact same thing.

Melania Trump wore loose-fitting conservative outfits to the Islamic nation, much like Obama did during her 2015 trip to Saudi Arabia. Trump was seen wearing a black Stella McCartney jumpsuit covered most of her arms and legs, and was accentuated with a gold belt and chain-link necklace. Ivanka Trump wore a long-sleeved floral dress that reached above the ankles.

Once photos of the Trumps in Saudi surfaced online, people were quick to dig up the president’s old tweet and point out his hypocrisy.

Saudia Arabia has a strict dress code that requires Saudi women to wear long black robes, known as abayas, and to cover their hair in public. However, foreign diplomats or politicians aren’t required to cover their hair during visits to the country.

Middle East politics expert Christopher Davidson told NBC News that it’s “perfectly tasteful and appropriate” for prominent women, including the Trumps and Mrs. Obama, to forego headscarves during their visits to the kingdom.

“We’ve now had a number of prominent Western women who have visited Saudi in recent months, Angela Merkel and Theresa May,” Davidson said. “Neither of them covered their hair and they both wore trouser suits.”

Journalist Joyce Karam also pointed out that several other First Ladies and female American politicians have visited the country sans headscarf in the past, including Hillary Clinton, Barbara Bush and Laura Bush.

(Laura Bush briefly wore a head scarf, which was gifted to her, during a trip to Saudi Arabia, though she did not wear it for the entire visit, according to The Guardian.)

What’s Next For The Obamas? Michelle Promises They’re ‘Not Gone’

Michelle Obama is still fighting the good fight when it comes to issues that matter to her.

Obama sat down with Sam Kass, the former White House chef and senior advisor for nutrition policy, in Washington, D.C., on Friday for the Partnership for a Healthier America summit to address childhood obesity. And she took aim at President Donald Trump’s policies

“This is where you really have to look at motives,” she said. “You really have to stop and think, ‘Why don’t you want our kids to have good food at school? What is wrong with you and why is that a partisan issue?’ Why would that be political? What is going on?”

Access to healthy school lunches was the former first lady’s focus while in the White House, and Trump’s administration has been rolling back those efforts

The Obamas took some time for themselves after Trump’s inauguration in January, inking book deals, vacationing and just generally living their best lives

But they’re back and they’re not going anywhere.

“We’re not gone, we’re just breathing, y’all. Let us breathe,” Obama insisted, per People magazine. “We’ve got to get our new lives set up.”

“When you hear me getting riled up in this chair, it’s not politics, it’s parenting that’s really moving me,” she said, adding that everyone needs to “put aside our politics … to not be cynical … to not give up.”

She’s certainly not.

“You’ve got me as a partner as long as I can be of use,” she said. “So the question for you is, where do you want me? Just let me know and I’ll be here.”

Barack And Michelle Obama Are Back From Vacation, And They’re Looking Slick

Barack and Michelle Obama are back from vacation and looking great.

The former president and FLOTUS made an appearance in Chicago on Wednesday to discuss plans for the Obama Presidential Center.

Michelle wore a gorgeous black and white dress that reminded us of the sleek printed dresses from her White House wardrobe. Barack looked relaxed in a black suit, white shirt and no tie.

At the event, Obama announced that he and Michelle will donate $ 2 million of their own money toward jobs for Chicago youth this summer.

“We don’t want to wait for a building,” he said. “One of the things that we will be starting this year is Michelle and I personally are going to donate $ 2 million to our summer jobs programs here in the community, so that right away, young people can get to work and we can start providing opportunities to all of them.”

Since leaving the White House in January, the two have taken time off to travel. They visited Palm Springs right after the inauguration, followed by a trip to Richard Branson’s private escape, Necker Island.

From there, Obama headed to Marlon Brando’s old escape, Tetiaroa, in the South Pacific. He later met up with Michelle and a few of their famous friend (Tom Hanks, Oprah and Bruce Springsteen) to spend some time on billionaire David Geffen’s yacht.

Needless to say, we’re happy they’re back.

Let’s All Cringe Over Chris Rock’s Awful Advice For Michelle Obama

If anything, Chris Rock knows how to leave an impression.

On Tuesday’s “Tonight Show,” the comedian remembered attending a final party at the White House for the Obamas.

“At one point, it’s me and Michelle Obama just talking. I’m not really supposed to be alone with Michelle Obama,” joked Rock.

As the comedian recalled it, “Michelle Obama’s like, ‘I don’t know what we’re going to do, the country,’ We’re talking about election and stuff. ‘I don’t know. I don’t know what’s gonna happen. This is such a crazy time.’”

Rock gave her some words of assurance: “I go, ‘You’ll be aight.’”

“I literally said that,” he continued, “I said that to Michelle. I said, ‘You’ll be aight.’”

The comedian tried to comfort the then–first lady by suggesting she could get any job she wanted after moving out of the White House, for example, on “The View” or “Real Housewives of Atlanta.” You can probably tell that this conversation didn’t end well.

“Michelle Obama looks at me, is like, ‘I was talking about the country. I wasn’t talking about me. I was talking about the country.’”

“I never felt so stupid in my life,” said Rock. “It’s like my GED flared up.”

Rock said that Obama then ran off to talk to Oprah while he went in search of “people as dumb as me.”

Yeah, perhaps it wasn’t the smartest thing to say to the first lady. But, in his defense, you haven’t made it unless you’re on “Real Housewives of Atlanta.”

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

Barack Obama Took A Vacation Photo Of Michelle And The Internet Loves It

Barack Obama has been enjoying a relatively responsibility-free life since leaving the White House in January. But some commitments are forever, like always taking a photo of your wife on vacation.

The former president was spotted serving as Michelle Obama’s dutiful Instagram husband on a boat near the French Polynesian island Moorea. (For extra dad points, he appears to be using a tablet.) It’s a familiar scene to anyone who’s ever gone on vacation with their significant other, until you learn the “boat” is an over 450-foot yacht belonging to bllionaire David Geffen, and that Bruce Springsteen and his wife, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, and possibly Oprah were also on board.

The star-studded sail marks yet another envy-inducing aspect of Barack and Michelle Obama’s lives over the past month. Since January, they both hung out in Palm Springs and joined Richard Branson in the British Virgin Islands; he then holed up in an exclusive private island once owned by Marlon Brando, and she eventually joined him for some tropical paddleboarding

Much like everything else these two do, this photo opp prompted a delighted reaction from fans on social media:

Sigh. What we wouldn’t give to be a fly on that fancy, fancy yacht.

Michelle Obama Praised Mary Tyler Moore’s Influence Before Her Death

Former first lady Michelle Obama knows a role model when she sees one.

Months before Mary Tyler Moore died Wednesday at the age of 80, Obama talked about the influence the Emmy-winning actress had on her as a little girl.

Mary Richards, Moore’s unmarried, career-driven character on the beloved 1970s sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” showed Obama that she had choices.

She was one of the few single working women depicted on television at the time,” Obama told Variety in an August interview pointed out by Entertainment Weekly. “She wasn’t married. She wasn’t looking to get married. At no point did the series end in a happy ending with her finding a husband — which seemed to be the course you had to take as a woman. But she sort of bucked that. She worked in a newsroom, she had a tough boss and she stood up to him. She had close friends, never bemoaning the fact that she was a single. She was very proud and comfortable in that role.

“I was probably 10 or 11 when I saw that, and sort of started thinking, ‘You know what? Marriage is an option. Having a family is an option. And going to school and getting your education and building your career is another really viable option that can lead to happiness and fulfillment.”

A First Lady Style Faceoff Between Michelle Obama And Jackie Kennedy

Vanity Fair once wrote that comparisons between Michelle Obama and Jacqueline Kennedy were “inevitable,” citing them as “two elegant women, catapulted into the national spotlight by their charismatic, ambitious husbands.”

Americans were captivated by Kennedy and continue to be with Obama for a number of reasons, but you cannot draw similarities between these two women without acknowledging their shared keen sense of style. Whether on a trip to Hawaii or at an inaugural event, both Obama and Kennedy exhibited excellence in dressing the part as first lady.

In honor of Obama’s 53rd birthday today and ahead of Friday’s inauguration, we look back at the two first ladies’ different ― but equally iconic ― styles.

One Tear-Jerking Last Look At Michelle Obama’s Best Outfits Of 2016

We spent a large part of 2016 celebrating Michelle Obama’s legacy and trying our best to ignore the imminent end of her tenure as first lady. She has done a great deal to help distract us from the latter, blessing the masses with arguably her best dressed year yet.

Sure, FLOTUS has had too many incredible style moments to count over the past eight years, but she really turned it out for the farewell tour. This rose gold Atelier Versace moment serves as proof.

Nothing can prepare us for the dark day looming in the distance when she passes along her title and the slew of best-dressed opportunities that come with itto the incoming first lady. But as they say, it’s better to smile because it happened than to cry because it’s over.

It’s in that spirit that we present 11 of Michelle’s best looks of 2016, which we intend to scroll up and down over and over again for the remainder of this year.

Michelle Obama Exhibits Excellence In Holiday Party Dressing

All hail Michelle Obama, who must understand just how tightly we’re holding on to every last appearance she makes as first lady.

FLOTUS continued her streak of style hits over the past few months on Tuesday, wearing a perfectly festive look at a holiday event hosted for military families at the White House

Wearing a three-quarter sleeve boat neck navy dress with red and cream embellishments, a full skirt and a bow to tie it all together, the always elegant first lady finished off the look with a pair of silver pumps.

Of course, it’s the selfies, arts and crafts and joy she served up while in the dress that really count, but let’s all applaud her for providing us with the ultimate holiday party style inspo, too.

Michelle Obama Tells Vogue ‘It’s Time’ To Leave The White House

First Lady Michelle Obama’s days in the White House are numbered, and she’s savoring every last moment as she prepares to say goodbye.

“Looking out on the South Lawn and the Washington Monument and it had just rained and the grass was really green and everything popped a little bit more,” she told writer Jonathan Van Meter for Vogue’s December cover story. “It’s soooo beautiful. And for that moment I thought, I’m going to miss waking up to this, having access to this anytime I want.”

Yet she’s ready for the next step, she said.

“On the flip side . . . it’s time. I think our democracy has it exactly right: two terms, eight years. It’s enough. Because it’s important to have one foot in reality when you have access to this kind of power. The nature of living in the White House is isolating. And I think Barack and I—because we’re kind of stubborn—we’ve maintained some normalcy, mostly because of the age of our kids. I go out to dinner with my girlfriends; I go to Sasha’s games; Barack has coached a little basketball with Sasha’s team. But at the same time, when you can’t walk into CVS?”

And while she admits that she doesn’t know what that step will be, she vows to continue fighting on behalf of the issues she cares about.

“I will always be engaged in some way in public service and public life,” she said. “I’ve always felt very alive using my gifts and talents to help other people. I sleep better at night. I’m happier.”

Van Meter spent a month by the first lady’s side, accompanying her to various engagements and speaking to her staffers.

He shows just how revolutionary her tenure has been. She took a “job with no salary, a platform with no power” and loaded it with significance and purpose, he wrote.

“Everything we do is by choice,” she said. “I could have spent eight years doing anything, and at some level, it would have been fine. I could have focused on flowers. I could have focused on decor. I could have focused on entertainment. Because any First Lady, rightfully, gets to define her role. There’s no legislative authority; you’re not elected. And that’s a wonderful gift of freedom.”

She is the perfect mix of substance and insouciance, Van Meter argued.

He highlights her accomplishments in the last eight years ― like Reach Higher and Let Girls Learn, two education initiatives ― as well as her impeccable style and penchant for SoulCycle and carpool karaoke with late-night host James Corden.

Particularly remarkable has been her choice to spend so much time learning from young people.

“It makes us want to live right and do right and be right—Every. Single. Day—so that we don’t ever disappoint these kids and they have something to hold on to, and so that they know—as I say all the time—I can do this. You can do this,” she said.

Michelle Obama Brings Broadway To The White House

First Lady Michelle Obama hosted an event on Monday honoring some of the best performing arts students from around the country, inviting some special celebrity guests to hold panels and workshops for the students.

“We always think that there’s a good reason to invite a bunch of talented young people to the White House to make sure they know how special they are. The President and I and everyone on this stage, we know how extraordinary you guys are,” she told the students. “And these folks are here today to honor you and to hopefully inspire you. They’re also here with an important message for you about what it takes to succeed, not just on Broadway, but in life.”

Obama also showed off some of her dance moves with singer Gloria Estefan and choreographer Sergio Trujillo, who taught one of the workshops.

Actors Kristin Chenoweth, Matthew Morrison and Whoopi Goldberg, Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and Broadway legends Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Schwartz also joined the festivities.

At the event, called “Broadway at the White House,” the students got to learn about various aspects of musical theater, including acting, composing, dancing, costume design and, of course, singing, which Obama joked is “something I know nothing about.”

The day began on a somber note, with Obama acknowledging Friday’s terrorist attacks in Paris and holding a moment of silence to honor the victims.

“Our thoughts and prayers of course are very much with the victims, their families, and all of the people of France. And we will continue to keep them in our hearts in the days ahead,” she said. “As my husband said on Friday, this was an attack not just on France, our dear friend and ally, but on all of humanity and our shared values. And as we mourn, we know that we must continue to show the strength of those values and hopes that the President spoke about when he talked. And the beauty is that all of you here, our young people that are here, you all reflect that passion, that creativity. You all are a part of those values that the President talked about. That’s what we’re protecting. We’re protecting what you all represent.”

According to the White House, the event will be part of a TV special, “Broadway at the White House,” airing on TLC on Thanksgiving.

You can see more photos of the event below.

Michelle Obama’s U.K. Tour Outfits Will Make You Fall in Love With Her Style All Over Again

Last week Michelle Obama, with daughters Malia and Sasha and mother Marian Robinson, set off on a goodwill cultural tour of England and Italy. On the six-day trip, which the First Lady used to promote the Let Girls Learn and Let’s Move initiatives, Obama wore European and American designers, reminding us of why we can’t get enough of her personal style. It was like 2008 all over again, when Obama first hit the scene and major fashion crushes ensued.

For the first stop on her global tour the First Lady arrived at Stanstead airport, wearing a yellow-and-blue lace Preen by Thornton Bregazzi dress. You can find a similar style on sale at for $ 960.

During the visit to London, Obama met with students and educators at the Mulberry School for Girls to discuss how the two countries are working together to enable access to education for young girls around the world. Her multicolor Mary Kantrantzou dress popped against the girls’ uniforms.

Obama wore U.K. designer Christopher Kane for a visit to 10 Downing Street. She teamed the black and floral embroidered dress with black Jimmy Choo kitten heels.

After her time in the U.K., Obama and family jetted off to Milan, where she discussed her Let’s Move initiative. She arrived in a fit-and-flare custom Duro Oluwu dress, with Sasha in a seersucker American Apparel dress, and Malia in heather gray.

On her second day in Milan, Obama wore a Missoni knit dress as she toured the U.S. Pavilion at the Milan Expo. “It was a beautiful surprise,” Angela Missoni told WWD upon learning the FLOTUS chose the striped dress for the trip. “It’s a beautiful thing; it’s the first time she has been photographed wearing a dress from an Italian brand,” added Missoni.

After receiving some flak for wearing only European designers on her tour, Obama chose a red shirtdress by American designer Michael Kors. The patriotic look, paired with simple black flats, was perfect for the baby shower Obama threw for moms-to-be who were stationed at the U.S. and NATO military base in Venice.

Later, Obama toured Venice, visiting the U.S. Pavillon of the Venice Biennale venue, wearing a V-neck sleeveless floral-print dress. She teamed the bold number with black gladiator sandals.

On the last day of the trip, Obama went with a kimono-sleeve dress and metallic sandals. Malia and Sasha chose wide-strap shift dresses, dainty necklaces, and simple flats.

Michelle Obama Is The ‘Hugger-In-Chief’

First lady Michelle Obama is “the hugger-in-chief,” according to White House photographer Pete Souza.

On Wednesday, Souza posted a series of photos on, with an intro noting that Obama enjoys hugging almost anyone she meets.

“My staff and I have been photographing her since Inauguration Day, and as the following photographs clearly show, she’s been hugging people nonstop since Day 1,” Souza wrote. “Whether it’s a school child, a family member in peril, a surprised tourist, or even a famous person, the First Lady greets them with a hug.”

“I’ve always been a big hugger — that’s just how I am — and it’s always my first instinct when I meet someone,” Obama says in the post. “I think it puts folks at ease and shows them that while I might happen to have a fancy title, I’m just Michelle.”

FLOTUS Michelle Obama Wears Talbots on Jimmy Fallon

TALBOTS SPINS WITH FIRST LADY: First Lady Michelle Obama set the Internet abuzz after showing off her dance moves on Jimmy Fallon’s late night talk show Thursday. It was the second time the pair danced exaggeratedly for their fans’ amusement. Millions of them have since jumped online to check out the pair’s “Evolution of the Mom Dancing 2.” Executives at Talbots also cut in on the action since FLOTUS told Fallon on-air,”This ol’ thing? I got it at Talbots.”
Talbots created their own Facebook version of the First Lady’s dance moves on Friday, spotlighting four maternal-looking women swiveling around to what is billed as the “Summer Scarf Shuffle,” the “Talbots Twirl” and other Obama-esque touches. The First Lady has worn the affordable, middle-of-the-road label in the past, but Thursday was the first time she clued in voters to that preference. Fallon averaged nearly 4 million nightly viewers last year.

Michelle Obama Heads to Cambodia

FLOTUS IN SEASON: After sharing the ins and outs of her “Let Girls Learn” initiative with Akin Abe, the wife of Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Michelle Obama touched down in Cambodia Friday to spread the word with another fellow First Lady Bun Rany. FLOTUS stepped off Air Force One wearing a Carolina Herrera sleeveless silk printed dress in a red carnation print from the designer’s spring collection.
Obama is in the midst of a five-day tour to bolster the initiative which aims to help educate the estimated 62 million girls who do not attend school in 11 countries targeted by the administration. A Princeton and Harvard Law alum, the First Lady has repeatedly emphasized the value of her own education when speaking publicly during President Obama’s tenure. Having started and run her own company for more than three decades, the self-taught Herrera, a mother of four daughters, certainly can appreciate the First Lady’s efforts to try to better the lives of other girls through learning and perseverance.

Chloë Grace Moretz And Michelle Obama Give ‘The Hunger Games’ New Meaning

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, unless you’re Chloë Grace Moretz.

In Funny Or Die’s new parody of dystopian films, the actress finds herself on the receiving end of some strange advice from a medical professional while the rest her classmates gorge themselves on junk food. She’s accidentally stumbled into the “snackpocalypse,” where carrots are seen as threats, and the words “healthy eating habits” are verboten.

Although the fake trailer closely mirrors the plot of “Divergent,” it also tips its hat to “The Hunger Games.” First Lady and healthy eating advocate Michelle Obama even makes an appearance.

Maya Angelou Memorial Service Attended By Oprah, Bill Clinton, Michelle Obama And More

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Maya Angelou liked to say that people will forget what you said or did in your life, but they will never forget how you made them feel. Former President Bill Clinton, first lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey said Saturday they were among the millions touched by Angelou’s wisdom when they needed help to rise.

Family and friends, both famous and anonymous, gathered Saturday to remember one of the 20th century’s most famous black writers. Amid tears, laughter, and gospel singing, they met at Wake Forest University, where she taught for 32 years though she never graduated from college. Dr. Angelou, as she liked to be addressed out of respect for all the honorary degrees she received, died May 28 at age 86. Hers was a remarkable life, linking worlds of civil rights, poetry, acting and teaching — those present recalled at the 2-hour-long tribute.

“We could just all be up here talking about how Maya Angelou represented a big piece of American history. And triumphed over adversity. And proved how dumb racism is,” Clinton said at the private memorial service. “But her great gift in her action-packed life was she was always paying attention. And from the time she starting writing her books and her poetry, what she was basically doing was calling our attention to the things she’d been paying attention to. And she did it with a clarity and power that will wash over people as long as there is a written and spoken language.”

The words of the indomitable woman, who Clinton said seemed to pack five lifetimes into one, changed a little black girl on the south side of Chicago whose Malibu Barbie doll was the standard of female perfection.

“Her voice lifted me right out of my own little head,” Obama told those gathered in the wooden pews of the main campus chapel. A large photo of her husband awarding Angelou the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011 hung from the campus chapel’s oak wall.

The first lady added, “She told us that our worth has nothing to do with what the world might say. Instead, she said, each of us comes from the Creator trailing wisps of glory. She reminded us that we must each find our own voice, decide our own value, and then announce it to the world with all the pride and joy that is our birthright as members of the human race.”

Tall and majestic, Angelou added heft to her spoken words with a deep and sonorous voice. She once described herself as a poet in love with “the music of language.” She recited the most popular presidential inaugural poem in history, “On the Pulse of Morning,” when Clinton opened his first term in 1993.

Clinton remembered that voice, and how Angelou chose not to speak for five years after she was raped by her mother’s boyfriend as a child.

“She was without a voice for five years and then she developed the greatest voice on the planet. God loaned her His voice,” Clinton said. “She had the voice of God. And he decided he wanted it back.”

Winfrey said the close and constant friend she met before becoming a talk show host could shake her out of bouts of self-doubt. Angelou taught her to look beyond trouble and spot the rainbow in the clouds, Winfrey said.

“Maya Angelou is the greatest woman I have ever known,” Winfrey said, then almost sobbing: “She was my anchor. So it’s hard to describe to you what it means when your anchor shifts.”

Winfrey and Obama, seated next to each other in the chapel’s front row, swayed in unison as Grammy-winning gospel singer Bobby Jones prompted hands to wave and clap. Actor and producer Tyler Perry assisted actress Cicely Tyson and former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young to the podium before country singer Lee Ann Womack drew cheers with her hit “I Hope You Dance.”

Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis and raised in Stamps, Arkansas, and San Francisco. Her life included writing poetry by age 9, giving birth as a single mother by 17, and becoming San Francisco’s first black streetcar conductor. She also danced at a strip joint, sang on records, acted alongside James Earl Jones and earned a Tony nomination for her work on Broadway. She wrote music and plays, received an Emmy nomination for her acting in the 1970s TV miniseries “Roots” and danced with Alvin Ailey.

Angelou also worked as a coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and lived for years in Egypt and Ghana, where she met South African liberation pioneer Nelson Mandela. In 1968, she was helping the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. organize the Poor People’s March in Memphis, Tennessee, where the civil rights leader was slain on Angelou’s 40th birthday.

Her son, Guy Johnson, said Angelou’s last decade was filled with pain — the toll of her career as a professional dancer and respiratory failure. She was bound to a wheelchair and oxygen tanks. Still, she was able to write four more books, had all of her mental faculties, and died quietly in her sleep.

“There is no mourning here,” he said.

Here’s How Connie Britton Really Feels About That Michelle Obama Cameo

Things are about to get crazy!

“Nashville” is back tonight with a brand new episode and while the series might be winding down the drama is definitely heating up. Last week, the cast recorded a special live performance shot at the Ryman Auditorium, and fans can expect even more action in tonight’s episode.

Connie Britton spoke to HuffPost TV about the season so far, that special Michelle Obama episode and why fans should brace themselves for the Season 2 finale.

On working with Michelle Obama
“It was an amazing episode,” Britton said when asked about the first lady’s lauded cameo. “My character Rayna puts on a concert at an army base. We shot at Fort Campbell which is right outside Nashville and we shot this incredible performance for the troops. It was such an amazing day.”

Britton also gave us a glimpse of the role the first lady has on the show. “Michelle Obama recorded a message for the troops, so its a pretty exciting episode,” Britton said. Fans should also get ready for the show to pick up the pace heading towards the season finale.

“Really everything leading up to the finale is very exciting,” Britton said. “We’re really just going to be moving crazily to the finish line and the season finale is going to be spectacular.”

On how Season 2 might end
The last time we saw Rayna, the country crooner was going on national TV to address her “baby daddy” issues and come clean to Deacon about why she kept Maddie a secret all those years. But Britton says the next few episodes are going to focus less on family drama and more on Rayna’s music career.

“This whole season for Rayna has been about her creating her new label and what we start to see as we get to the season finale is that everything, especially after everything that’s happened with Scarlett, everything is riding on her album release,” Britton said. “We’re going to watch Rayna doing everything that she can to make a great performance. The season finale we get to see her be really victorious with that.”

As to what fans can expect from the season’s final episode? “There’s definitely a twist in the season finale that even when I read it in the script I was very surprised,” Britton said. “I think the audience is going to love it.”

The actress also revealed her plans for after the show ends its sophomore season which include a new film with Tina Fey and Adam Driver and continuing to be an ambassador for the Ponds skincare brand.

Feel Good Fashion: Parisian Chic Style of Portland Fashion Designer Michelle Decourcy

Portland has plenty of interesting fashion looks and creative self-expressions seen everyday throughout the city in different neighborhoods.

Yes, people living out different lifestyles, mixing and matching what appeals to their own personal taste, and I appreciate the vibrant array of self-directed fashion views that Portland peeps take on each and every one of them.

However what continues, to draw my attention is well-crafted elegance. Yes, designs that spell simple glamour, like the Parisian chic style of Portland fashion designer Michelle Decourcy.

“I like to feel good,” so says Decourcy.

Okay, sounds easy enough. What else?

“And I like to turn to my closet for inspiration and design my collections from what I wear every day.”

Furthermore, what I like about the custom made designs by Decourcy is the deeply rooted fashion reflection of Parisian quality, sophisticated fabrics, (French lace) and silhouettes that move, and groove with the female body.

Others agree, The Stylist Kimberly Warner writes, “Michelle DeCourcy’s meteoric rise in the fashion industry has made her one of the industry’s shooting stars. Michelle burst onto the scene when Norah Jones wore her dress to the 2003 Grammy Awards.”

Decourcy, a muse of many talents, when not in studio meeting clients and designing her bridal collection, and ready-to-wear fashion, is living large on stage as a rock star in her band called the Rock Tarts, performing the music of the 80’s, 90’s, and now some of her own original tunes.

How does Decourcy maintain her creative fire?

“When it’s not fun anymore, stop.”

I appreciate that kind of strength and joie de vivre as the French would say, so here are a few pieces from the bridal collection and ready-to-wear line that capture the Decourcy sparkle.

One final fashion tip when selecting or creating an outfit?

Decourcy says, “Keep in simple. Choose one body part to make a focused fashion statement, like the back, legs or chest. Invite mystery to be a part of your look, in other words, reveal a little and cover up the rest, and by all means feel good.”

Michelle Obama’s Second Inauguration Dress Headed To Smithsonian

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michelle Obama’s fashion is making history again, at least for the next year, as her second inaugural gown will be displayed at the Smithsonian Institution.

Before it’s stowed away for a future presidential library, Obama’s ruby-colored chiffon gown made by designer Jason Wu is being lent to the National Museum of American History for a year to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Smithsonian’s first ladies exhibition. The dress will be paired with Obama’s shoes designed by Jimmy Choo and will go on display beginning Tuesday. While the Smithsonian traditionally collects each first lady’s first inaugural gown, second gowns are usually shown only in presidential libraries. This is the first time the museum has displayed a second inaugural gown.

The dress was transferred to the National Archives but is being lent to the Smithsonian with the White House’s blessing. Smithsonian Curator Lisa Kathleen Graddy said it seemed like a nice time to start a new tradition in the ever-evolving First Ladies exhibit for those who serve two terms in the White House.

“The more I started thinking about it, it’s such a long time before the presidential library is built,” she said. “There’s such interest in the dress, I thought maybe it would be interesting if we could borrow the dress and do a special display, a special limited-time display here so that people would get a chance to see it.”

This dress drew headlines when Obama unveiled her selection one year ago. It was the second custom-made Jason Wu gown Obama had chosen, following the white gown Wu designed for the first lady when she arrived in Washington and on the fashion scene. Since then, Obama has become a trendsetter.

The red gown is embellished with cut velvet that carries a unique shimmer, Graddy said. It features a cross-halter strap neckline, and the ring at the top is adorned with small diamonds.

“It’s certainly a change, isn’t it, from the white dress with the train,” Graddy said, recalling Obama’s first gown in the museum’s collection. “It’s this amazing, vivid red. No train. So it’s a much slimmer dress — still flowing — but a much slimmer-lined dress. It’s an incredible change of color from that beautiful sparkly white.”

It’s unusual for a first lady to use the same designer twice, at least in recent decades. Wu has said it’s been the experience of his life to help dress the first lady, taking him from fashion insider to a household name since the first inauguration in 2009. Mrs. Obama also has turned to designer Thom Browne for special outfits, including her coat and dress for inauguration day in 2013.

Even her outfits from J. Crew draw notice, and some of Obama’s apparel choices sell out quickly online. For 2014, Pantone Inc.’s color of the year — orchid, a shade of purple — was introduced with a nod to the fact it’s a color Mrs. Obama often wears. Pantone sets color standards for the design industry.

From time to time, the people want to copy the fashion of a first lady, Graddy said, noting Jacqueline Kennedy as an example.

“People look at what she is wearing. They admire it,” she said of Obama. “I don’t think that fashion is Michelle Obama’s first priority. I think that obviously she’s interested in what she wears, and she puts a lot of thought into it — and that’s what people see and respond to is a very put-together look that they would like to emulate.”

The Jimmy Choo shoes paired with Obama’s second gown had a much shorter heel, seemingly more comfortable than her heels for the first inaugural, Graddy said. The first lady knew how long she would be on her feet for the second inaugural.
