Bristol Studio Offers Its Spin on Business Casual

Bristol Studio is showing itself to have quite the range with the Los Angeles label’s latest capsule. The newest collection from the Los Angeles men’s line, which draws inspiration from founder and creative director Luke Tadashi’s love for basketball, has released its take on business casual. It’s good timing as much of the conversation around men’s is now focused on suiting and more tailored looks. Bristol first previewed the line at the recently ended ComplexCon in Chicago and has now officially released it to the broader market. “The reception at ComplexCon was strong,” Tadashi said. “People were definitely excited by the concept and curious as to how the concept came to life. As with any collection or project we do, it takes some explaining, so I would often explain the concept in great detail and from there they got even more stoked about the product because they understood the reason why it exists. I think the reversability factor is also important to note because that was something people always responded with awe to.” A look from Bristol Studio.  Ian Flanigan The capsule includes reversible basketball shorts with a custom gray and yellow plaid or navy and white pinstripe retailing for $ 160, a $ 220 dress shirt with

New York Men’s Day Offers Peek at All-Stars, Emerging Labels

New York Men’s Day’s afternoon session on Monday showcased both emerging designers and those who have created more-established businesses, ones touted as All-Stars. Those included Krammer & Stoudt, Descendant of Thieves and Wood House Army. Private Policy, which will hold a runway show on Wednesday, was also part of the mix.
Three  pieces from Krammer & Stoudt were psychedelic-colored updates of the brand’s Americana-skewed workwear, with jackets and pants created from 12-oz. denim and decorated with Day-Glo colors in designs including hot rod flames.
Julian Woodhouse of Wood House Army offered up WHA, three graphic black-and-white vertically striped looks from his diffusion line that included an anorak, shorts and a one-piece with military details.
For Descendant of Thieves, the brand offered up an assortment of multipurpose pieces for the travel guy, including reversible shorts, lightweight jackets and swimwear that could double as regular shorts.
Private Policy used the All-Star showcase to launch Pxl, a see-now-buy-now capsule collection of black, blue and green prints on shirts, trousers, caps, a bikini top and racing shorts.
Among the other brands showing at New York Men’s Day were International Woolmark Prize 2018/19 nominees Ka Wa Key, who presented a romantic collection of hand-done tie-dye patterns and distressing on airy knits and

Frances Valentine Opens Pop-up, Offers Kate Spade-Inspired Special-Edition Items

Five months after the death of Kate Spade, the company she helped to start, Frances Valentine, is moving forward with its first retail venture — a Madison Avenue pop-up store.
Spade’s suicide in June at the age of 55 shocked the fashion community and the team at Frances Valentine has quietly been trying to carry on. Going into retail was always part of the business plan, according to chief executive officer Elyce Arons.
Asked how the company approaches such a delicate and complicated situation with care and without being exploitive, Arons said, “For us, it is our way of honoring Katie and keeping her spirit alive. We have a really small team in the office and it hit us all really hard. That first week, we had so many customers and friends of the brand write in — people who had known her a long, long time and people we had never met, who said please keep going — you have to keep her designs alive.”
Arons said, “We decided that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to embrace her spirit and the really good things that she brought to everyone. This has been a really happy, good thing. And it wouldn’t

Madewell Offers Extended Sizing in Sportswear and Dresses

MADEWELL EXTENDS RANGE: Madewell, a division of J. Crew, is expanding its extended sizing offerings.
This past spring, Madewell introduced denim in extended sizes 33 to 35 and new fits like the Curvy Jean. Now it has extended its sizing in denim to 37 and dresses, knits, sweaters, tops, and jackets from XXS to 3X, across 40 percent of the Madewell collection. The extended size range became available Tuesday. All pieces are available for purchase on madewell.com.
Top denim styles will be offered in select Madewell stores across the country through its Dot-Com Try-On program, which allows customers to try on all sizes and styles in person and place their order with a store associate. The retailer offers free shipping for in-store and online customers who have joined their free loyalty program.
Madewell is rolling out extended sizing in-store slowly so the team can continue to fine-tune offerings based on customer feedback. The goal is to have the majority of extended sizing available in-store by next year. Prices on the extended sizes are the same as straight sizes.
Earlier this month, J. Crew said it was partnering with Universal Standard, which caters to sizes 6 to 32, on a capsule collection and was rolling out

Malcolm Butler offers possible reason as to why he was benched in Super Bowl LII

Malcolm Butler being benched in Super Bowl LII is the story that won't go away, but maybe it finally can. The former Patriots cornerback did an extensive feature with ESPN and within it his Super Bowl LII experience was brought up. Butler was asked about being benched in the game and gave the same answer as he did back in March when he said he may not have been 100 percent locked in and focused the week of the game. “You know, Bill Belichick is a great coach and he makes good decisions. We all make good decisions and we make bad decisions," he said in the ESPN feature. "Obviously, it didn’t work out good for me, him, or the New England Patriots organization, but he calls the shots. It is what

Velocity Honolulu Offers New Take on Luxury Living

Think about retailing in Honolulu and the first thing to come to mind is the Ala Moana shopping center, the seventh largest mall in the U.S. and home to Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and a long list of specialty stores.
But there’s another development making strides in the city — at least among the luxury community: Velocity Honolulu, a 235,000-square-foot mixed-use development at 888 Kapiolani Boulevard that sports an unusual offer.
The development, which is located less than a mile from downtown, features upscale boutiques and restaurants as well as a luxury car dealership and auto concierge program along with 388 high-end condominiums. It opened in 2016.
One piece of the project is Sixty-One Hawaii, a men’s boutique that focuses on boutique American brands such as Jeanshop, Slightly Alabama, 7 Diamonds, Jack Mason and others. The store also has a four-chair barbershop that offers Old School cuts and classic shaves. The store opened at the end of last year.
“Our specialty is making special retail places,” said Brad Nicolai, president of JN Group, which developed the Velocity project with Oliver McMillan LLC. JN Group was founded by Nicolai’s father, Joe, more than a half-century ago and is one of the oldest automotive companies

Kwon’s spring-summer 2018 collection will be presented during Milan Men’s Fashion Week, on June 18. The week kicks off on June 16 with the Ermenegildo Zegna show and ends June 19. Armani’s own show is on the last day, followed by Fendi.

Haunting Sculpture Offers A Surreal Glimpse At The Future Of Climate Change

Those visiting the Venice this year may have noticed something unusual while passing the Ca’ Sagredo Hotel: two giant hands reaching out from the murky, aquamarine waters below.

The disorienting vision is a sculpture called “Support” by artist Lorenzo Quinn, meant to provide a daunting premonition of the potential damage caused by climate change.

“Venice is a floating art city that has inspired cultures for centuries,” the artist said, in a statement released by Halcyon Gallery. “But to continue to do so it needs the support of our generation and future ones, because it is threatened by climate change and time decay.”

The piece takes the shape of two childlike hands, magnified to the extreme, outstretched to buttress the towering hotel ― a Venice landmark. In part, Quinn was intrigued by the idea of creating hands because they are “considered the hardest and most technically challenging part of the human body,” also possessing “the power to love, to hate, to create, to destroy.”

Quinn constructed the massive hands in a studio off-site, then transported them via canal to the hotel. You can see parts of the lengthy construction process on Instagram.

Two human hands forge a lasting imprint in the viewer’s mind, perfectly mimicking the potential the body parts possess in real life ― to support, to defend, to create change. The visceral image is intended to draw focus on the fragility of the environments we too often take for granted, emphasizing the power of humans to either salvage or seal their fates.

The artist, as he explained on Instagram, “wants to speak to the people in a clear, simple and direct way through the innocent hands of a child and it evokes a powerful message which is that united we can make a stand to curb the climate change that affects us all. We must all collectively think of how we can protect our planet and by doing that we can protect our national heritage sites.”

Almost there…

A post shared by Lorenzo Quinn (@lorenzoquinnartist) on

Quinn’s “Support” will be on view until Nov. 26.

Nicki Minaj Offers To Pay Fans’ College Bills On Twitter

In one hour, Nicki Minaj committed to paying thousands of dollars to help more than a dozen students pay their bills.

After one fan asked the star for some assistance, Minaj launched an impromptu tuition-savings contest on Twitter late Saturday night.

Minaj was in the midst of tweeting about a contest in which she would fly the winner to hang out with her at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, when she got a response she likely didn’t expect.

The star was interested.

Within minutes, requests flooded her feed. Minaj responded to fans’ who asked for money to pay off loans and funds to afford books, housing and tuition. Minaj asked for proof that she could verify with various schools, so fans started tweeting copies of transcripts and bill statements.

Minaj ended the night about an hour later, saying she may make the same offer sometime in the future.

TMZ reported that as of Sunday, three fans confirmed they had received funds from Minaj.

Kathryn Sargent Offers Style Service at InterContinental London Hotel

STYLE SARGENT: Savile Row tailor Kathryn Sargent has launched a style service at the InterContinental London Park Lane Hotel that includes a guide on dressing for big spring and summer events such as Ascot, Henley, Wimbledon and the Chelsea Flower Show.

“With traditional events such as those of the British ‘season’ — and those further afield — it’s important to know that you’re dressed impeccably to have the best experience. I wanted to create a contemporary but luxurious guide to getting it right and feeling connected with local culture wherever you have traveled from,” she said.
Sargent has dressed a range of figures from royals and politicians to celebrities such as David Beckham. She honed her skills for 15 years working her way up the ranks at Gieves & Hawkes before launching her eponymous bespoke label in 2012. Margaret Howell Offers Men’s Wear Taster in London

A LOOK IN: Margaret Howell, who plans to show a few pieces at Pitti Uomo in Florence this week, gave a taste of her men’s collection during the London men’s shows.
The fall lineup was packed with her signature sturdy, luxe fabrics and chic, classic shapes including a black boxy work wear style jacket paired with an army green shirt and dark twill trousers.
There were army trousers, rolled at the ankle and brown corduroys, too, styled with chunky sweater vests or Breton knits.
There was a heavy pea coat made with wool from Britain’s Fox Brothers and a hand-knitted crewneck sweater in three-ply wool by one of Howell’s longtime fashion collaborators, Marion Foale, and heavy button-front shirts – gingham and otherwise – made in the brand’s north London factory.
An array of tweed jackets, sweaters and trousers came in an earthy palette of mustard, gray, rust, khaki, olive and navy.
The full men’s collection will show alongside women’s wear for the first time at a co-ed show during London Fashion Week in February.

Pharrell Offers Ellen A Powerful Response To Kim Burrell’s Homophobic Remarks

Pharrell made it clear that hate has no space in this day and age.

The singer sat down with Ellen DeGeneres to promote the soundtrack for “Hidden Figures.” He was originally supposed to appear alongside his “I See A Victory” duet partner, Kim Burrell, but she was disinvited following a video leak of her spewing anti-gay rhetoric at the Love & Liberty Fellowship Church in Houston.

DeGeneres said she chose not to have Burrell on Thursday’s show because the homophobic remarks were directed at her and who she chooses to love.

“There’s no space, there’s no room for any kind of prejudice in 2017 and moving on,” Pharrell said, adding that he loves the gospel singer just like he chooses to love everyone. “We all have to get used to everyone’s differences and understand that this is a big, gigantic, beautiful, colorful world, and it only works with inclusion and empathy. It only works that way.”

“Whenever you hear some sort of hate speech and you feel like it doesn’t pertain to you because you may not have anything to do with that, all you got to do is put the word black in that sentence, or put gay in that sentence, or put transgender in that sentence, or put white in that sentence, and all of the sudden it starts to make sense to you,” he said. “I’m telling you, the world is a beautiful place but it does not work without empathy and inclusion. God is love. This Universe is love and that’s the only way it will function. And I get it that sometimes some of the divisive stuff works. We learned that lesson last year that divisiveness works. But you have to choose what side you’re on. I’m choosing empathy; I’m choosing inclusion; I’m choosing love for everybody just trying to lift everyone. Even when I disagree with someone, I’m wishing them the best and hoping for the best because we can’t win the other way.”

Pharrell previously posted a message against hate speech on Instagram after the release of Burrell’s sermon.

NYC Offers a Multitude of Movie Theaters for Your Viewing Pleasure

2016-12-22-1482437103-581268-MovieTheaterinside.jpg

By Annika Andersson, ZEALnyc Contributing Writer, December 30, 2016

Winter is here and one of best ways to combat the cold is to go inside–to the movies! Hollywood seems to schedule even more of their blockbuster releases around the holidays, case in point–Rogue One: A Star Wars Story took over complete multiplex theaters on its opening weekend! And here in New York, we are privileged to have access to a fairly steady stream of great independent film options from all over the world, but invariably the question arises “where should we go to see this movie?”

New York City is home to an astounding variety of movie theatres, offering everything from traditional neighborhood cinemas to large multiplex chains–including one of the largest IMAX screens in the world! Here are five amazing theaters offering refuge from the chilly winter winds; so while you sit inside far from the cold, you’ll have some lovely amenities to enjoy as well.

2016-12-22-1482438377-2817849-AMC.jpg

AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13

AMC began as a family business 90 years ago, and has grown to become one of the largest movie chains in the U.S., welcoming approximately 200 million guests annually in 300 movie theatres. One of these multiplex theaters is located on the Upper West Side, just a block and a half away from Central Park. This complex is the home of one of the largest IMAX theaters in the country, with a staggering 600 seats. AMC generally shows big commercial productions and blockbusters, and is equipped with incredible audio, video, and 3D that gives justice to any special effects. All AMC movie theaters offer reduced prices to screenings starting before noon, which may be worth noting for the budget traveller. And it’s not a bad way to start your day, as there are plenty of comfy brunch restaurants in the area to head to afterwards, where you can discuss the film. The neighborhood has also seen a recent increase in shopping venues, such as outlet store Century21 around the corner. But if you’d like to splurge on your movie experience, AMC also offers the pricier alternative AMC Prime, which combines the high quality picture and sound technology of Dolby Cinema with enormous, numbered reclining seats. But beware — if you’ve ever leaned back in one of those for a film screening, it’s hard to ever be content with regular seats again!

AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13 is located at 1998 Broadway between 67th and 68th Street on the Upper West Side.

Film Society of Lincoln Center

If you are more interested in Indie films, head down a couple of blocks to Lincoln Center’s own movie theaters. Their beautiful paneling and airy design definitely makes them among the chicest and most upscale in New York, offering a wide range of films that will attract the true cinephile. What differentiates Lincoln Center’s programming from others showing independent film, is the mix of film series like “Open Roads: New Italian Cinema” and “Rendez-Vouz with French Cinema.” The main attraction is of course the prestigious New York Film Festival in October, which is well worth a visit in itself. The true lover of culture doesn’t even need to travel further than a couple of doors, as the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic and New York City Ballet is located in the same complex. Central Park is only a couple blocks away, in case you need to stretch your legs after your movie or performance, or if you haven’t had enough, stroll down a 20 minute walk on Broadway to catch a musical or a play. And best yet–there’s a full-service cafe that operates at the main location–Indie Food and Wine–so you have lots more options for snacking besides popcorn. Click here for the menu.

Film Society of Lincoln Center encompasses the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center (a multi-screen complex) at 144 West 65th Street, as well as the Walter Reade Theater across the street at 165 West 65th Street on the Upper West Side.

2016-12-22-1482438739-7277932-angelica.png

Angelika Film Center

Further downtown where Broadway crosses Houston Street (and a couple of blocks west), you’ll find the iconic Angelika Film Center & Cafe. Houston Street is the formal divide of NOHO from SOHO (North of Houston vs. South of Houston), which coincidentally offers two of New York’s best and hippest downtown shopping areas. Angelika belongs to a movie chain focusing on independent film, and the New York location opened in 1989.

The corner entrance is located at the Renaissance-inspired Cable Building, which was built in 1892-94 as the headquarters for one of the city’s tram companies. It was hailed by contemporaries for its magnificent architecture. The films are shown in the basement, which once served as the power plant for the trams. Sometimes you can hear (and feel) the subway trains during screenings, but if you are not overly sensitive, the prime location and fine selection of films shown, are well worth the visit.

Angelika New York is located at 18 West Houston Street (at the intersection of Mercer Street).

2016-12-22-1482438931-7403164-sunshine_theater_james_karla_murray_new_york_nights_lpl_130205_blog.jpg

Landmark Sunshine Cinema

At the corner of Broadway and Houston, if you turn east on Houston Street you’ll discover Landmark Sunshine Cinema, located in a beautiful Lower East Side building from 1898. Previously, the location has shown films under the name of the Houston Hippodrome, served as a theater for Yiddish vaudeville, and functioned as a warehouse. In 2001 Sunshine Cinema took over the building and when it opened to the public in December of that year, it was equipped to offer five salons with DLP digital projection and Dolby Digital Surround EX sound.

Landmark Theatres is America’s largest movie theatre chain dedicated to feature and promote independent film. In addition to showing a great selection of films, the space also offers a Japanese rock garden and a stunning view of the city from the third floor’s spectacular glass window.

Landmark Sunshine Cinema is located at 143 East Houston Street between Forsyth and Eldridge Street on the Lower East Side. And be on the lookout for the opening of its newest location at 625 West 57th Street (at 12th Avenue).

2016-12-22-1482439026-5035957-IFC.jpg

IFC Center

Back on the west side, in the heart of New York’s picturesque West Village, you’ll find the IFC Center. This is another great choice for the lover of documentaries, world cinema and independent films. IFC is hosting North America’s largest documentary film festival DOC NYC in the fall, while showing a great program of independent film all year round, often followed by directors Q&A’s. IFC also offers a variety of themes and programs, such as cult movies Fridays and Saturdays at midnight, a monthly program featuring LGBTQ guest curators, special presentations of theatrical productions such as National Theatre Live, Royal Shakespeare Company, Branagh Theatre Live and much more. The venue opened in June 2005, following a renovation of the historic Waverly Theater. Be sure to use the bathrooms downstairs so you may add the experience of walking through a basement dungeon tunnel flooded in green light to your New York bucket list.

IFC Center is located at 323 6th Avenue (where 6th Avenue crosses 3rd Street).

Film Club at Crosby Street Hotel

And for one more “bonus” entry on our list (even though there aren’t any current listings for upcoming films, you should be aware of this really nice, high-end viewing option for down the road).

SOHO’s Crosby Street Hotel has a luxuriously designed screening room in the basement, and on Sunday evenings, the hotel runs a film club, which is open to both hotel guests and the public. The films shown are often critically acclaimed blockbusters, which usually includes many Oscar and Golden Globe-winning and -nominated films. The hotel offers packages with dinner or cocktails at the Crosby Bar, followed by a movie at eight o’clock. Instagram offers disappearing photos and live broadcastingIn an attempt to keep up with other social media platforms, Instagram has introduced the option of sending photos that will disappear through Instagram Direct, and it plans to offer the option of broadcasting live in Instagram stories. Glenn Martens’ Y/Project Offers New Take on Engineered Romanticism

As a kid growing up in the historic, picturesque city of Bruges, Y/Project’s Glenn Martens developed an obsession with classical beauty. Later — once thoroughly schooled in the subject — he gravitated toward elements of local culture bordering on bad taste. After all, said Martens in an interview in his new digs on Paris’ Rue de Paradis — a hip but gritty street that looks nothing like its name — among Bruges’ museums filled with Flemish old masters were frites stands with aggressive neon lights and super-kitsch chocolate shops.
The duality storyline lives on in Martens’ collections, with the designer tumbling together disparate references from classical tailoring to streetwear to offbeat historical references. For spring, there’s a bit of a “pirate” thing going on, “something a bit more romantic,” alongside nods to his coming-of-age-decade: the Nineties.
For Martens, it’s all about freedom and eclecticism. Among the silhouettes: trashed-up club kid; “Dynasty”-style bustier cocktail dresses; tongue-in-cheek sexy denim cut with Y-shaped crotches and chaplike legs, and “haute-couture-y” crushed velvet dresses. Serving as rigging systems, cufflink configurations on sleeves and superlong jeans are used to create exaggerated ruching, while removable sleeves, tops and dress panels in colored silk mousseline or crushed velvet clip onto

Stan Herman Offers Historic Take on Fashion and his Career

NEW YORK — Sixty-plus years into a multitiered fashion career, Stan Herman understandably had a lot to say during a 92Y question-and-answer session Tuesday night.
The designer, who headed up the Council of Fashion Designers of America from 1991 to 2006, offered an historical perspective that few could match. And he couldn’t have been more relaxed with Fern Mallis, who first interviewed him in 1968 after she won a Mademoiselle magazine contest. Diane von Furstenberg, Reed Krakoff, Yeohlee Teng, Steven Kolb and Bernadette Peters were among those who attended.
While designing uniforms for brands like McDonald’s, Avis, JetBlue and FedEx involved more of a low profile, Herman may be more recognizable with Middle America for the signature loungewear he has sold on QVC for 23 years. And Herman isn’t easing up on the gas pedal in his own life. Longevity is a family trait — his father, who had a chain of silk shops, lived until the age of 105, and only stopped working at 100 and gave up horseback riding at 93.
Having once had a summer job at Vogue Patterns and having lived in an 86th Street rooming house for $ 38 a month, Herman brought to life an era that is pretty much alien

Q-Tip Offers Iggy Azalea A Hip Hop History Lesson, T.I. & Azealia Banks Respond

A brewing battle between Iggy Azalea and fellow industry artists has found the Australian-born rapper in hot water, yet again.

Following a series of tweets responding to rapper Azealia Banks candid Hot 97 interview where she expressed her much-publicized issues with Iggy, “hacktavist” group Anonymous threatened to release “snapshots” from an alleged sex tape featuring the chart-topper if she didn’t issue an apology for her comments to Banks.

As if that wasn’t enough, veteran MC-musician Q-Tip took to his personal Twitter account on Saturday to give Iggy, and his more than 700,000 followers, a history lesson on the origins of Hip Hop and its connection to sociopolitical movements. Here’s what he wrote:

“HipHop is a artistic and socio-political movement/culture that sprang from the disparate ghettos of NY in the early 70’s Coming off the heels of the CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT and approaching the end of the Vietnam war it was a crossroads 4 America specially for blacks in the US our neighborhoods were PROLIFERATED w/a rush of HEROINE.”

“Our school systems here in NY dungeon traps with light for learning… blk men some of whom didn’t return from tours of duty n the ones who did came w/war baggage (agent orange, addiction, ect..)… these men had families but due to these events and throw into the mix the public emasculation… they proved to be handicapped parents. The surrogate parents? The STREETS… the streets of gangs, crimes, and the hustlers coddled us and swept us up.”

“But! Being a spirited, rhythmic & expressive people music art dance outlined our existence… it proved a way for us to exhault to scream to dance to laugh and find OUR VOICE… we weren’t at the time skilled musicians as kids. We had records, turntables, ideas and INGENUITY being natural chemist we took from whatever was availed to us and we created something mighty and special.”

“We cut breakbeats back n forth we took a hybrid of Jamaican toasting along w/ radio jock rap( hank Spann, Gary Byrd, ect.) and we put our rap down.. it was a neighborhood thing really. Black and Latino Kids were carving out their space and it became infectious… eventually Keith Cowboy coined the phrase hiphop . Yrs later the first rap record was recorded and now we r moving.”

“But during these strides this country still had the monster of racism and racial insensitivity breathing and ruling… believe it or not young black n Latino lives specifically weren’t acknowledged in mainstream American culture unless Of course.. the convo was abt gangs , being criminals or uneducated. And hey! Like I stated early our families were rushed our schools sucked and we were left to put devices to survive… but HIPHOP showed that we had DEPTH, fire, and BRILLANCE… the music was undeniable! It moved from NY N became national and even GLOBAL.”

“Hiphop now was FOR EVERYBODY!! All of those who cld relate to the roots, the spirit, the history, the energy.. It reached YOU… it touched your spirit n took u up. We magnetized you! That’s what BRILLANCE does… now u are fulfilling your dreams … BUT! you have to take into account the HISTORY as you move underneath the banner of hiphop. As I said before… hiphop is fun it’s vile it’s dance it’s traditional it’s light hearted but 1 thing it can never detach itself from is being a SOCIO-Political movement.”

“U may ask why … Well once you are born black your existence I believe is joined with socio-political epitaph and philos based on the tangled and treacherous history SLAVERY alone this is the case it never leaves our conversation… Ever. WeAther in our universities our dinner tables our studios or jail cells… the effects still resononates with us. It hurts… We get emotional and angry and melancholy… did u know president Clinton was the ONLY PRESIDENT to apologize for it? did u know that remnants of slavery exist today thru white privilege? When certain “niceties” r extended your way because of how u look? Isn’t that crazy?”

“I say this 2 say u are a hiphop artist who has the right 2 express herself however she wishes… this is not a chastisement this is not admonishment at ALL this is just one artist reaching to another hoping to spark insight into the field you r in. I say this in the spirit of a hopeful healthy dialogue that maybe one day we can continue… I’ve been on twitter a long time and this will probably be my last series of tweets pretty much but I’m Kool with it as long as I got to share this w u. Zzzzzzz’s up! Peace!”

Following Q-Tip’s 40-plus tweets, Iggy’s label boss, T.I. also decided to jump in to share his thoughts by tweeting a followup response.

And, as expected, Azealia Banks – who has previously had a public feud with T.I. before, too — responded to the rapper’s remarks.

I Heart Guts Toy Company Offers Intestines, Rectum And Testicle Stuffed Animals

It takes a lot of guts to make an intestine or lung into a cuddly doll, but that’s the aim of toy company called, appropriately named, I Heart Guts.

The gut-busting business is the brainchild of Wendy Bryan, who calls her fuzzy toys shaped like vital organs “a dissected Hello Kitty.”

She first came up with the idea n 2005, after a series of bad relationships inspired her to draw a broken heart.

“At the time, I was also doing a lot of drinking and smoking, so a sad liver and bummed-out lung followed,” she said on the website.

At her husband’s urging years later, she started churning out plush versions of livers, lungs, brains, prostates and mammary glands.

The website includes amusing or sophomoric backstories for the toys, depending on your perspective. Case in point is the rectum’s biography which says its favorite song is “Drop It Like It’s Hot” by Snoop Dogg and lists its occupation as “waste disposal,” the Mirror reports.

Each bodily doll costs around $ 20. Cards and T-shirts of organs are also available.

The latest additions to her intestinal menagerie are a cuddly colon and soft rectum, .

Live Social Media TV Offers Behavioral Data

ABC premiered #RisingStar Sunday night and generated more than 1 million app downloads, and there is more to this innovation than television finally moving beyond the simple hashtag for live programs.

Users connected either a Facebook or Twitter account to activate the application during the two-hour music talent show hosted by Josh Groban. The gimmick is that by being a voting “judge” users might see a profile photo on a huge video wall that rises, if a performer gets 70 percent of the vote to move to the next round.

2014-06-23-RisingStar.PNG

The #RaiseTheWall hashtag generated some of the usual activity on Twitter, but it was the Rising Star app that is worth further attention. While the 2-ton wall was mostly difficult to see, the show was collecting massive amounts of user data.

Once connected, the app followed along as three voting “experts” — Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Kesha, and Brad Paisley — were introduced. Groban established the live nature of the show with World Cup talk and some edgy banter with the stars.

Each time a performer was introduced, app users were required to check in to be eligible to vote. Thus, ABC can show advertisers how many engaged viewers stayed with the show and how quickly they re-connected after each commercial break. These viewer behavior data are far ahead of traditional audience sample household data.

Rising Star also pushed messages during the commercial breaks, such as meeting a couple of “fellow judges” and humor about taking the app to the bathroom.

2014-06-23-RisingStar2.PNG

There are some issues with the technology. The app takes the entire screen of a smartphone or tablet, which means users might need two devices to continue to follow other social media during the show or bail out.

Online criticism of the show included questionable talent, slow program pace (with a second West Coast broadcast) and audience vote priming through expert panel antics. Yet, in the end, the live show broke some new social media ground. The final performer of the evening, selected from an earlier Instagram audition, nailed the live performance. The studio audience went wild, and Rising Star had the expected happy ending.

TV must use mobile app technology in this way for a variety of programming — from presidential debates to sports and awards show — for it to find a happy ending in the fragmented social media world that searches for audience attention.

Dear Market Researcher, I’m Gay — Stop Sending Playboy Subscription Offers!

This offer arrived in the mail the other day from Playboy‘s Market Research Department:

2014-06-20-playboy.JPG

Dear Domenick Scudera,

To attract readers with preferred demographics, you have been selected to receive this courtesy. As a special incentive, the price is reduced down as low as we are allowed, giving you a full year of Playboy for a token $ 12.

A sampling of my friends’ responses:

  • “I hear the articles are good.”
  • “Wasn’t this on your wedding registry?”
  • “I think the label has a misprint — it should read ‘…to a token,12.'”
  • “Oh, c’mon. Everyone knows gay men love women.”
  • “Did u forget to tell us something?”

Gay acceptance has reached new heights if 49-year-old, recently married gay men are one of Playboy‘s “preferred demographics.” I feel blessed that Playboy has extended me this courtesy, one that I never would have received back in the days when gays were being denied equality.

The offer says that I will get the “beyond-beautiful women, obviously.” In addition, they believe that I will “appreciate the award-winning journalism and no-holds-barred interviews” in every “smoking hot issue.” The fine print includes this guarantee: “Playboy always guarantees that if you are ever dissatisfied for any reason whatsoever you get a full refund on all unmailed issues.”

Dear Playboy,

I am somewhat dissatisfied with my subscription. Don’t get me wrong. There is a lot to admire in your magazine: The articles and interviews are terrific, and the women are, obviously, beyond beautiful. However, I would enjoy more male nudity in my magazines. Please refund me the amount of my unmailed issues, until you are prepared to give me some smoking-hot maleness.

Thanks,
Domenick

This is not the first time I have received an offer for heterosexual porn. When I was 7 years old, I innocently opened up a plain, white envelope addressed to me. There was a series of pictures of naked women with their legs spread wide, and before I knew what was happening, my mother leaped across the room, wrestled the envelope out of my hands and appeared to have some trouble breathing. The next thing I knew, she was on the phone, complaining to someone, trying to make sure I never received offers like this again. Who did she call? The Post Office? The Better Business Bureau? President Nixon? I have no idea, but whoever it was, she was ineffective. I received more offers for years. She carefully monitored my mail until I was well into my college years.

Were 7-year-old gay boys one of the “preferred demographics” for Screw?

Most likely, these marketing departments have misidentified me. This is a problem I encounter often. For instance, when I watch television, the advertisers assume that I am a heavyset, single female on her period. I gather this from the fact that most of the commercials are for weight-loss supplements, dating sites and tampons.

About an hour after I received the Playboy offer, a pleasant young woman knocked on our front door with an offer for educational books for our children. When I explained that we have dogs, not kids, she showed me the books anyway. Did I know that flamingos are pink because they eat shrimp, and that they would be white if they did not? No, I did not. This is educational, but my nonexistent children will not learn this, because I did not order any of the books.

Am I missing out? There might be other interesting factoids in those books, and Playboy‘s “no-holds-barred interviews” might offer some insights. But for now, I think I will hold on to my gay dollars for another day.
