The searing first season of “Fleabag” felt like a complete story in and of itself. Brandon Maxwell Gets a Reality Check

Brandon Maxwell has had it. Holding forth under the Lone Star State flag in his office two days before his New York Fashion Week show, dressed in shorts, Nikes and a Piggly Wiggly T-shirt, he’s on a rant: “I’m so bored with reading articles about whether New York matters. Look at Tom Ford — that was the most gorgeous show. Have you ever seen a Jason Wu dress up close? It takes your breath away. Alex Wang, he makes clothes flawlessly. There are incredibly talented people here — seamstresses, patternmakers, assistants, my former intern Claudia Li, who is killing it. Oh yeah, New York matters, we’re out here doing the damn thing!”
Maxwell, 34, is in a good position to throw a little ‘tude. His business is enjoying double-digit, year-over-year growth; he’s looking for investors to help him expand and “speak to a wider audience,” is a finalist for the International Woolmark Prize, and has a new role on Bravo’s reboot of “Project Runway,” debuting March 14, that could lead him down a similar path to pop culture fame and fortune as his idol, Michael Kors.
“I hope it doesn’t become too much of a distraction,” quips Neiman Marcus fashion director Ken

Slowear to Host Pop-up Exhibit Featuring Augmented Reality

MILAN — Slowear, a Venice-based company of Made in Italy men’s heritage brands, will host a pop-up exhibition devoted to augmented reality during Milan Men’s Fashion Week.
Named “Reality, Expanded” and developed in collaboration with the Italian edition of Wired magazine and Alchemica — the original AR exhibition by Alkanoids studio — the exhibit aims to bridge fashion and technology.
To be staged at Slowear’s showroom in central Milan on June 18, the pop-up will house a special AR installation dedicated to the brands manufactured by the company. These include Incotex casual pants, Zanone high-end knitwear, Glanshirt casual shirts, Montedoro outerwear and Officina Slowear accessories and footwear.
“Behind our clothes there are many different stories to tell: stories about their long and complex production process, about the people who made them, about the brands and the ideas that gave them shape,” said Slowear president Roberto Compagno. “These stories epitomize the core values of Slowear, yet conveying them effectively is no easy task. Using augmented reality might be a creative and compelling way for showing our customers what happens behind the scene.”
In addition, the exhibition will showcase 32 illustrations suspended between the virtual and the physical worlds. Visitors will have the opportunity to add

The game follows a series of couples – eight in this edition – during a trip across three countries, dealing with the challenges and pitfalls of attempting a long-distance hitchhike in a foreign land, trying to communicate in the local language and to survive with no money.
During the game, competitors are challenged to accomplish a range of missions and physical tests, which assign advantages or handicaps along the route. Couples that come in last at various checkpoints along the way are eliminated from the competition.

Mom’s Viral ‘Behind The Scenes’ Photo Reveals The Reality Of Instagram Perfection

After posting a “perfect” selfie, a U.K.-based mom and blogger followed up with a powerful message about body image.

On May 16, Tova Leigh posted a photo of herself on Instagram, along with a caption about corsets and unrealistic body image standards.

A post shared by Tova Leigh (@tova_leigh) on

After receiving tons of “likes” and compliments from friends, Leigh made the selfie her profile picture on Facebook.

But she later felt guilt about her choice of photo and the filters and edits she used to create it. On May 28, the mom shared a follow-up post to reveal the reality behind the “perfect” selfie.

“Today I am sharing the ‘behind the scenes’ of that image,” Leigh wrote. “How I actually looked when it was taken, without 20 attempts to get it right, without cropping out the bits I don’t like and without adding the ‘make me look pretty’ filter.”

The mom explained that over the weekend, she read an article about the way social media can make people feel depressed and insecure because they perceive the perfect-looking images to be real.

“Well let me tell you something: THIS IS REAL,” she wrote. “In all my mum-tum, cellulitis, granny pants and absolutely zero thigh gap glory! Not the perfect sexy body by some dictated standard, but imperfectly fabulous because it is real and it is mine.”

Leigh concluded with some advice for people to keep in mind the next time they see a “perfect” photo on Instagram or Facebook and start to feel self-conscious: “Social media is full of shit. You are beautiful just the way you are. And there is nothing sexier than being real.”

The post received over 37,000 likes. Leigh has three daughters ― a 6-year-old and 4-year-old twins. She told HuffPost they inspired her to share this message.

“They’re obviously still not on social media, and I sometimes worry about when they will be,” she explained. “As somebody who uses social media quite a bit for my work, I am well aware of how misleading it can be, and at the age of 41 I take things with a pinch of salt as I know that what I see is not always reality. “

Reading about the negative effects of social media “perfection” ― particularly on teenagers ― prompted Leigh to share the truth of her own “perfect” selfie.

“In reality, I was standing in my underwear in my bathroom facing a window, so I had really good light,” she recalled. “I had a mirror in front of me and I must’ve tried at least 20 times before I got the perfect shot.”

But the image was “dishonest,” and Leigh said she felt like a fraud after receiving compliments on how she looked in photo. “It did not represent what that moment really looks like, so I decided to share the truth.”

Though the blogger was hesitant to share such an intimate photo, she’s glad she did. Leigh has been overwhelmed by the positive reactions and all the kind messages she’s received from women around the world thanking her for her honesty.

“We live in a world and a society that puts a lot of pressure on women, young girls teenagers etc to look a certain way,” she told HuffPost. “We tend to share the good moments and the attractive bits about our lives which I guess is understandable, but at the same time is very misleading.”

She added, “If you look at social media you will see that 99 percent of images look perfect. But how does that even make sense? Life is not perfect. We are not perfect. And that was the point I was trying to get across: We’re not perfect but that is totally OK. Being real is far more powerful than being perfect.”

Drone-Enabled Deliveries, Mixed Reality Experiences Gaining Interest

WHAT’S NEXT: After Friday morning’s “Mercenary Matters: Technology and the Changing World of Retail” panel discussion, two participants discussed what’s next.
Their discussion was part of the Fashion Law nstitute’s seventh annual symposium “Fashion Revolutions” in New York. Plural NYC founder Daniel Plenge said, “Drones and brands need to have a big Amazon strategy because they’re going to drop the hammer this year. They already have been, and the drone thing might not be as far away as we think.”
With his marketing and digital media clients constantly asking how they might monetize Instagram, Plenge is intrigued by Liketoknow.it even though he personally hasn’t yet used it to buy anything. “One of my challenges now is to bridge the gap between tools like that online and attributing them to sales off-line. So maybe I screenshot the image, I saw it on Taxi TV, on a bus shelter or any of the six touchpoints of digital…when did I actually decide, ‘You know what? It’s payday. I’m going to go get that,’” Plenge said.
Another panelist, Po Yi, an attorney with Venable LLP, said, “I’m not a huge fan of VR. I’m more of a fan of mixed reality or augmented reality so that you

Hairstylist’s Touching Photos Capture The Raw Reality Of Depression

One hairstylist proved to be a cut above when she helped a client experiencing a mental health condition.

In February, a woman walked into The Salon, a haircut location inside of Ulta Beauty in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and began pulling every “All Soft” product by Redken off the shelf. Kate Langman, an employee the salon, noticed what the customer was doing and approached her to see if she needed any help.

The two began to talk, and Langman soon learned that the woman had depression. She hadn’t left her bed in six months due to her mental health condition, she told Langman, and had neglected to wash or brush her hair.

Instead, the woman had pulled her hair back into a bun, which over time became a giant, matted knot.

Langman offered to do the woman’s hair, making her an appointment for the very next day.

“I have a very close family member that went through similar [mental health struggles],” Langman told The Huffington Post. “If I would have let her walk away with all of those products that she spent a hundreds of dollars on, she would have gotten nowhere — which she would have possibly viewed as another failure for her.”

But the woman didn’t show up for the appointment. Two weeks later, she called and booked another appointment. And once again, she was a no-show.

“It actually, kind of, broke my heart,” Langman wrote on Facebook.

Then, on March 9, the woman came into the salon and asked Langman if she could do her hair.

“When she walked in that [day], I had a feeling of relief,” Langman told HuffPost. “That she still had the drive to feel like herself again.”

Langman worked with the woman for over eight hours, brushing, cutting and coloring her hair. The results were phenomenal.

After the experience, Langman posted the story to Facebook, where it went viral, receiving over 16,000 shares and 35,000 likes.

“By the end of this service, I could see the sparkle in her eyes,” Langman wrote in her post.

The anonymous client’s symptoms aren’t uncommon for the more than 300 million people worldwide who experience depression. The disorder can deplete a person’s energy and motivation, making simple routines like fixing your hair feel like an excruciating task.

Langman says she’s happy that she could be there for the woman, who confirmed the story to The Huffington Post.

“I wanted her to know that there is someone that is here to help her,” Langman said. “No matter the circumstances. She needed someone she could count on and I wanted to be that person for her.”

Why Broadway’s ‘Falsettos’ Is A ‘Reality Check’ For LGBTQ Audiences

When “Falsettos” premiered on Broadway in 1992, the William Finn-James Lapine musical struck a fresh chord in its depiction of gay relationships and unconventional families during the HIV/AIDS crisis.

As beloved as the show was in its original incarnation, the LGBTQ community has made significant strides toward equality in the 24 years since then. So when it was announced that “Falsettos” would be returning to Broadway in a Lincoln Center Theater production this fall, Lapine sought a creative team who would approach the musical as a new work altogether.

Enter Emmy-nominated choreographer Spencer Liff, who is best known for eight seasons’ worth of “So You Think You Can Dance” footwork. The 31-year-old Arizona native is no stranger to Broadway, too, with a résumé that includes dancing in the ensembles of “Cry-Baby” and “9 To 5.” Behind the scenes, he’s taught Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells, Darren Criss and others to strut in spike heels for the Tony-winning revival of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” and worked with a cast of hearing-impaired performers for “Spring Awakening,” which was remounted on Broadway to great acclaim last season.

Still, Liff said that when Lapine tapped him to choreograph “Falsettos,” he was initially hesitant. For one thing, he wasn’t familiar at all with the musical, which explores the complicated dynamics between a gay couple, Marvin and Whizzer (Christian Borle and Rannells), as well as Marvin’s ex-wife Trina (Stephanie J. Block) and son Jason (Anthony Rosenthal) in the mid-1980s. He also felt at some remove from the show’s depiction of the HIV/AIDS crisis in its second act.

“I didn’t know ‘Falsettos’ at all when I started working on it. I realize that’s terrible of me because the show’s been around forever, and it’s held in such high esteem,” Liff told The Huffington Post. Ultimately, however, he came to realize that the show “was so incredibly ahead of its time when it was written. So I was interested in being able to give [audiences] a bit of a reality check into what the generation before ours went through.”

Although Liff is best known for his fancy footwork, he opted for a more nuanced approach to “Falsettos,” treating the show, as he puts it, as an “abstract art piece.” Primarily, the staging requires the characters to manipulate a Rubik’s Cube-like contraption resembling a pile of cinder blocks that can morph into a kitchen, a playground and even a bedroom seamlessly. Designed by David Rockwell, the simple set piece represents the characters’ “sense of trying to find their place in the world,” Liff said.

His work with “Falsettos” has certainly paid off. The revival, which opened Oct. 27 at the Walter Kerr Theatre, garnered raves in The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and Time Out New York, among other publications. The show, which ends its limited run Jan. 8, will be preserved on film for an upcoming “Live From Lincoln Center” special to air on PBS.

Liff is thrilled by the buzz that “Falsettos” has generated, particularly in a busy theater season and in a time when the LGBTQ community and other minority groups are facing an uncertain future. “We live in this new PrEP culture, and the idea of what AIDS and HIV was [has evolved],” Liff said. As an openly gay man himself, he felt that it was his responsibility to “present the show in a way that would make people stop and think about their actions, and have more respect for the battle” toward equality that LGBTQ people have had to fight across generations.

Liff’s next project, however, couldn’t be any more different. He’s currently at work on the choreography for “Head Over Heels,” a musical based on Philip Sidney’s 16th century text, The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia, using the songs of the ‘80s female rock group, The Go-Go’s. The show will be fully staged in a developmental production on Jan. 16 and is aiming for Broadway in fall 2017, with “Spring Awakening” and “Hedwig” director Michael Mayer at the helm.

If Mayer’s previous work is any indication, “Head Over Heels” won’t shy away from sex or politics, albeit in an entertaining way. Given the seriousness of America’s political climate, Liff told HuffPost he “can’t work on fluff right now,” but he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I’m very lucky to be an artist at this time,” he said. “We’re the ones who get to channel and funnel our emotions and our frustrations into something beautiful, something that might help the world in some sort of way. If one person a night can be changed by [a show that I’ve worked on], I’m even luckier.”

“Falsettos” plays New York’s Walter Kerr Theatre through Jan. 8. Head here for more information.

Men React To The Unglamorous Reality Of Pregnancy

Learning what actually happens inside a mother’s body during pregnancy can be eye-opening to say the least. This may be especially true for the male-bodied people out there.

The folks at BuzzFeed video filmed a group of men reacting to facts about pregnancy — such as “a woman’s uterus can expand up to 500 times in size during a pregnancy” and “from the second trimester onwards, babies pee in the uterus, then they drink it, then they pee again, then they drink it.”

Their reactions range from shock to concern to fear. “What happens to all the innards?” one guy asks. “I don’t envy this at all,” another adds.

The guys also get to see how a baby’s face looks as it develops in utero, which leads to comparisons to E.T. and Pokémon.

Watching a video about the way a woman’s body changes during pregnancy, one viewer makes the understatement of the day: “This just seems unpleasant.”

When the men are asked to sum up their final thoughts, they offer apologies and statements of awe. But perhaps the best response comes in the form of a question.

“Why isn’t maternity leave better in the United States?”

Westfield Turns to Virtual Reality in London

WESTFIELD’S VIRTUAL TRENDS: Westfield in London has turned to virtual reality technology to showcase its spring 2015 fashion trends to customers in its Westfield London and Westfield Stratford City malls. Both locations will host a series of digital fashion experiences in March and April called Future Fashion, to bring trends such as denim, florals and “future modern” to life for the malls’ customers. One experience will allow customers to use virtual reality headsets to explore abstract interpretations of different trends in what Westfield called “a completely fantastical space.” Gesture-tracking technology will also mean that customers can use their hands to interact with characters in the virtual world and travel through the space. Another will center on fashion avatars, as part of which customers can use their body movements to create avatars on large screens, in a palette of patterns and images that reflect the trends, such as woven threads or flowers.
Meanwhile Edit Me, Westfield’s trends micro-site — which is available on touch screens in the malls — will allow customers to curate and shop products from Westfield’s retailers that fit with those trends. Westfield has partnered with Inition, a London-based emerging technologies production company, to create the experiences. Myf Ryan,

This Abandoned Hospital in Detroit Is Reality, Not a Set on ‘The Walking Dead’

This story was written by Robert Johnson and originally appeared on Pixable.

Driving through Detroit, abandoned commercial buildings of all types rise up from the mass of vacant homes to catch the eye. After several days, this modern structure had drawn my attention enough that I stopped to take a closer look. Originally designed to house the Southwest Detroit Hospital, which was closed in 1993, it was sold to Detroit businessman Harley K. Brown who re-opened the building as United Community Hospital and subsequently drove it into the ground to advance his boxing promotion career.
