Otis College of Art and Design Receives $2.5 Million, Honors Swimwear Designer Anne Cole

On Sept. 6, Otis College of Art and Design’s Academic Building will officially be renamed the Anne Cole Building, in honor of the late swimwear designer and L.A. style legend who gifted the school $ 2.5 million to establish the Anne Cole Scholarship Fund for students in its fashion design program. Cole, who died at age 90 in early 2017, was a longtime mentor and supporter of the Los Angeles-based school, established in 1918. “Past students will always remember their time with her,” said Rosemary Brantley, fashion designer and chair emeritus of the school’s fashion design program since the Eighties. “Future students will have a dream realized when they receive a scholarship in her name.” Cole is best known for inventing the tankini in the Nineties under her namesake label, started in 1982. She was the daughter of Fred Cole, a silent film actor who in 1925 founded Cole of California, a swimwear company that helped establish L.A. as a center of the industry. Anne grew up in the Hollywood scene, watching her father outfit silver screen starlet and swimmer Esther Williams, who was the face of the Cole of California brand. He also collaborated with Hollywood costume designer Margit Fellegi in the Thirties

Chiara Boni La Petite Robe Receives Prestigious European Sustainability Certification

MILAN — Chiara Boni La Petite Robe breaks new ground in the sustainability field. The women’s wear company is the first Italian fashion house to obtain the Product Environmental Footprint certification, defined in 2013 by the European Union Joint Research Centre. To obtain the prestigious certification, Chiara Boni La Petite Robe teamed up with its textile partner Eurojersey, which provides the brand with the signature stretch, breathable and shape-retaining patented Sensitive Fabrics, by selecting eight iconic pieces, including three short dresses, a maxi frock, a jumpsuit, a pair of pants and a shirt, that were deeply analyzed. In particular, through the application of the 16 PEF criteria, Chiara Boni La Petite Robe managed to accurately measure the environmental footprint across the entire cycle of its products, which are manufactured in Italy in the Tuscan region. “We decided to select only eight iconic pieces because it would have been impossible to analyze all the styles included in our collections. However, these edited designs really reflect the core of our production, which is 80 percent made with Eurojersey Sensitive Fabrics,” said the brand’s founder and creative director Chiara Boni. “There is no production in the world with zero impact on the environment, but we strongly feel

Maria Grazia Chiuri Receives Legion of Honor

HONOR ROLL: “I can’t believe it!” Maria Grazia Chiuri exclaimed in Italian as she bounded up to her former boss, Valentino Garavani, at the Dior headquarters in Paris on Monday night.
The veteran designer was one of several hundred people gathered at 30 Avenue Montaigne to watch Chiuri receive the Legion of Honor, France’s highest civilian distinction, from France’s gender equality minister Marlène Schiappa.
About to close for renovations, the building had been decked out in an immersive installation by feminist artist Penny Slinger for Chiuri’s haute couture show earlier in the day, giving the proceedings a surrealist twist.
Flanked by her husband Paolo, son Nicolo and daughter Rachele, Chiuri was swarmed by well-wishers, including fellow designer Alber Elbaz; influencer Chiara Ferragni; Pathé Ouédraogo, the Burkina Faso-born designer better known as Pathé’O, with whom she worked on her recent resort collection, and author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who inspired her “We Should All Be Feminists” T-shirt.

NOUVELLE PARISIENNE: “You have become a symbol of the Parisienne,” Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo declared on Tuesday before making Francesca Bellettini, chief executive officer of Yves Saint Laurent, a Knight of the Legion of Honor, France’s highest civilian distinction.
The Italian executive, who took over the Kering-owned brand in 2013 and has since overseen a tripling of its sales, was joined by family, colleagues and members of the Saint Laurent galaxy at the ceremony held in a gilded reception room at Paris City Hall.
Among them were billionaire François Pinault and his son François-Henri Pinault, chairman and ceo of Kering; Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello; Betty Catroux, the late couturier’s longtime muse; Madison Cox, president of the Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent, and Jean-Paul Agon, ceo of L’Oréal, which holds the beauty license for Saint Laurent.

Tokyo Fashion Week Receives Tepid Reviews With Some Bright Spots

TOKYO — Eagle-eyed buyers at Tokyo Fashion Week discovered some gems beyond the runways — even one that might satisfy despondent Phoebe-philes.
“I think there may be an opportunity for Hyke to gain a bigger following. For people who were fans of Phoebe Philo’s Celine who are now looking elsewhere, Hyke could possibly fill that void,” said Motofumi “Poggy” Kogi, creative director of United Arrows & Sons.
Hyke staged a large-scale show in a rented venue for the first time this season. And while it is already carried by some of the best stores in Japan and across Asia, Kogi believes it may have potential in the West as well.
Tomomi Miyamoto, a men’s wear buyer for Hankyu and Hanshin Department Stores, said she planned to pick up Japanese brand Comoli, which also did not participate in fashion week. “The quality of the materials is unique to Japan, and the designer’s proposal for the way clothes should feel when you wear them is fresh,” Miyamoto said. “I can feel its strength in its conviction to be unshakable by trends.”
Tokyo Fashion Week finished its six-day run on Saturday to largely mixed reviews. After what many considered to be a strong autumn season, the spring 2019 installment generated

Edward Enninful Receives amfAR Award of Courage during Milan Fashion Week

BRAVE BOY: British Vogue editor in chief Edward Enninful received amfAR’s Award of Courage in recognition of his outstanding personal commitment to the fight against AIDS on Saturday night, during the tenth Milan edition of the gala event.
“Growing up in West London in the Eighties, I saw the hostility, fear and rejection that HIV brought to the gay community. Those were difficult times that will never be forgotten. Many men and women refused to surrender in the face of this global crisis and yet today the greatest battle left to fight against HIV is stigma,” he said during his speech. He was introduced on the stage by Adwoa Aboah, the model who appeared on the cover of British Vogue’s first issue under the direction of Enninful.
“In a world that is increasingly divided we must remember: We’re more alike than we are different. This is not the disease of others. We all share the responsibility to promote tolerance and compassion for each other within our communities,” Enninful said. “British Vogue is about being inclusive, it’s about being brave, it’s about representing the under-represented with a voice. My Courage Award goes to all the brave people that continue to drive us forward

Peter Marino Receives French Honor in New York

Peter Marino swapped his trademark biker leathers for wool — above the waist, at least — at a ceremony Monday night at the cultural arm of the French Embassy in New York.
That smoothed the pinning on his chest of the medal for his latest honor: Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters.
“Do you recognize it? You made it for me 15 years ago,” Marino explained to LVMH Fashion Group honcho Sidney Toledano, as he stroked the covered placket of the cropped style, in black to match his leather pants and high police boots. Toledano had presided over Dior and Dior Homme when its ateliers turned out the sharp-shouldered garment.
Toledano and Chanel’s Alain Wertheimer were among French luxury executives — marquee clients of the acclaimed American architect — who turned out for the event.
Marino’s retail projects also include gleaming flagships for Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, Ermenegildo Zegna and others — though his initial claim to fame was the Madison Avenue flagship of Barneys New York back in 1985.
“And Barneys was clearly blown away with your work because they hired you to design 17 more of their department stores,” Bénédicte de Montlaur, cultural counselor of the French Embassy, told a small crowd

Yohji Yamamoto Receives Design for Asia Lifetime Achievement Award

HONG KONG — “Let me say, I think I’m a good dressmaker, but I’m not a very good talker,” said Yohji Yamomoto.
The Japanese designer was in Hong Kong at the Design for Asia gala dinner Friday night to accept a lifetime achievement award. Dressed in all black, he tipped his signature hat onstage as he collected the accolade, given to a figure who has demonstrated “visionary shaping designs across a variety of fields, and who uses design to educate and promote wider use of design in society.”
Although the 74-year-old designer has been a celebrated figure for many years — best known for his dark and avant-garde tailoring — he shared that the night held extra special meaning for him.
“In my long career, in design, architecture, [I’ve been to] so many parties, this is the very first time that I have such a warm feeling, I really appreciate this. Please let me become your family,” he said.
In 2011, Yamamoto received the Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, the highest honor in arts and culture in France, where he has shown his collections since 1981.
The night also honored hotelier Adrian Zecha, the founder of the Aman resorts and a new affordable luxury hotel

Kenzo Takada Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

TOP PRIZE: Kenzo Takada was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the 55th Fashion Editors’ Club of Japan (FECJ) Awards ceremony in the Japanese capital on Wednesday. Hiromichi Ochiai, of streetwear brand Facetasm, was granted the designer of the year prize.
Takada had received accolades by the club twice previously, in 1972 and 1999, the year he retired from his fashion house. While the 78-year-old designer has called Paris home for over half a century, he made the trip to Japan to accept his award. Takada spoke briefly about his plans for the future.
“I’m getting older, so I don’t think I’ll do the same job [I used to do] again. But I would like to work with people from different countries, with different young people, in various areas other than fashion, such as lifestyle and perfume. Even if it’s just a little bit, I would like to keep working,” Takada said. “And in a personal sense, because I’ve been removed from Japan since a fairly young age, I feel like I don’t know Japan very well. So while I can still get around, I’d like to make some time to increase the number of trips I make back to Japan and to stay here longer.

After Being Denied 73 Years Ago, 92-Year-Old Black Woman Finally Receives Her Library Card

Ninety-two-year-old Pearl Thompson was a student at Shaw University in 1942 when she attempted to check out a book from the Olivia Raney Library in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her school, which is an HBCU, didn’t carry the book she needed for a history class so she visited the local library. According to her daughter, Deborah Thompson, Pearl was denied a library card because she was black, so instead, she was sent to the building’s basement to read the book.

“I expected to go in and get a book,” Pearl told News & Observer.

Seventy-three years later, Pearl returned to Raleigh with her daughter and granddaughter and finally got her library card.

“She was fighting good health but she was determined to make this trip,” Deborah told HuffPost. She said Pearl is currently battling kidney disease and suffers from heart issues — but she wouldn’t let that stop her.

The Olivia Raney Library was the city’s first public library and later became a part of the larger Wake County Public Library system. In the 1960’s, it merged with Richard B. Harrison Library — a library Deborah said Pearl helped to launch — which only served blacks at the time. The Olivia Raney Library, which is now closed, serves as a local history library and the administration at Cameron Village Library, which opened right after Olivia Raney Library closed, held a ceremony in Pearl’s honor last week.

“We all felt that the presentation of Mrs. Thompson’s library card needed to be honored with a ceremony and we also wanted the opportunity to rectify a mistake of the past,” Ann Burlingame, deputy director of Wake County Public Libraries, told The Huffington Post on Tuesday.

After college, Pearl, who has always been an advocate for education, went on to become a teacher in Raleigh for nearly fifty years.

“I was determined that when I became a teacher every child would have an opportunity to learn to read,” Pearl said at the ceremony. “A little boy [had] Down’s syndrome and they said he would never learn to read. And I taught him to read. Even to the point he wrote books himself.”

Thompson moved to Ohio with her husband after 12 years as a teacher in Raleigh, and she now lives in Cincinnati where she taught for 37 years. Decades after her days in college, she said she doesn’t hold a grudge against the library and their poor treatment.

“I don’t hold any kind of hate in my heart, because that doesn’t do it,” she said. “That doesn’t get you there.”

Kelli O’Hara Receives “Our Leading Lady” Award for 15 Years On Broadway (VIDEO)

SCROLL DOWN TO WATCH THE INTERVIEW AND SEE KELLI RECEIVE THE “OUR LEADING LADY” AWARD!

On Sunday, June 7, famed Broadway actress and fan favorite, Kelli O’Hara (who I profiled here, last year) was finally recognized by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing for her remarkable contributions to the stage, taking home her very first TONY Award following a total of six nominations over several years.

In the weeks leading up, fans took to social media with a fervor, debating who exactly should win for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. Many were in “Camp Kristin” for Chenoweth’s outstanding performance as Lily Garland in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of On The 20th Century. Others rooted for theater legend Chita Rivera and her performance as Claire Zachanassian in Kander and Ebb’s final musical, The Visit (which Rivera has said will likely be her final role on Broadway).

However, the support for O’Hara was fierce, and her fans were ultimately vindicated on TONY night as she received the award for her stunning and complex performance as Anna Leonowens in the Lincoln Center revival of The King and I.

Weeks before the TONY Awards, our team at Center On The Aisle (#COTA – the website I run in addition to contributing here on The Huffington Post) was also split, but peace came by acknowledging exactly what this incredible recognition represents. All three of these women were frontrunners, and deserved to win for different reasons. However, if the TONY Awards have a weakness, it’s that other than its Lifetime Achievement awards, they celebrate only a single performance–not the performer’s body of work and total contribution to the art form.

Realizing this, our team did a little research and found out that this year did not just bring Kelli her sixth nomination, her performance in The King and I marked a total of 15 years on Broadway, and her 10th Broadway show.

To acknowledge this, the #COTA team (with the help of a special celebrity guest included in the video below!) decided to take matters into our own hands and recognize Kelli O’Hara for all of these incredible performances (whether she won the TONY Award or not), which collectively have made her one of the most recognizable and talented actresses on stage today.

Check out the video below to see me present Kelli with Center On The Aisle’s first ever award, titled “Our Leading Lady.”

Kanye West Receives Honorary Doctorate From School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago

Kanye West might be a college dropout, but now he has an advanced degree.

The rapper received an honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) Monday for his “transformative, genre-defying work.” In his acceptance speech, he described what the honor means to him.

“This honor is gonna make your lives easier,” he said. “Two reasons: You don’t have to defend me as much and I’m going to make all of our lives easier. And it’s these Floyd Mayweather belts that are needed to prove what I’ve been saying my entire life. Whether it’s the cosign of Paul McCartney grabbing me and saying, ‘It’s okay he doesn’t bite white people.’ Or The New York Times cover. Or the Time ‘Most Influential’ cover. And now, a doctorate at the Art Institute of Chicago.”

“When I was giving a lecture at Oxford,” he continued, “I brought up this school because when I went on that mission to create in other spaces — apparel, film, performance — it would have been easier if I could have said I had a degree at the Art Institute of Chicago.”

Lisa Wainwright, dean of faculty and vice president of academic administration at SAIC, told the Los Angeles Times that it had decided to give West the honorary degree after he publicly mentioned the school.

“I read it and thought, ‘Wow, this is a fantastic moment.’ Here is this major figure in the cultural landscape promoting art school, this guy from Chicago saying art school is cool. So we thought, ‘This man deserves an honorary doctorate from us!’ He should have gone here.”

Kim Kardashian, who is currently in Brazil on business, commemorated her husband’s milestone with an Instagram post.

Dr. Kanye West!!!!!!! I’m so proud of you baby & I know your mom would be so proud too!!!!

West attended Chicago’s American Academy of Art for one semester on a partial scholarship before transferring to Chicago State University, where his mother, Donda West, was head of the English Department, according to Rolling Stone. After one semester there, he dropped out to pursue his music career. And the rest is history.

Seattle Campus-Shooting Hero Receives Flood Of Donations For Wedding Registry

SEATTLE (AP) — People have donated more than $ 22,000 in less than a day through an online fundraiser for the student who thwarted a shooting at a small Seattle university.

Jon Meis and other students stopped the gunman Thursday at Seattle Pacific University. Meis has been credited with pepper-spraying and pinning the gunman while he was reloading his shotgun.

Soon after Meis was identified, praise began to pour out on social media sites. Someone found Meis’ wedding registry, and people quickly bought out the gifts listed.

That’s when sports radio producer Jessamyn McIntyre got the idea to begin a GoFundMe site for Meis and his fiancé’s honeymoon and future. The site quickly went viral.

According to the page’s statistics, more than 700 donations have come in as of Saturday afternoon — tallies that are expected to increase.

McIntyre said she hasn’t had direct contact with the Meis family, who has asked for privacy. But she has left them her contact information. She also contacted university officials.

McIntyre will leave the fundraising page up for a week, unless the family asks her to take it down, she said.

On the donations page, people continue praising Meis. One person posted, “Only one word needed: Inspiring,” to go with a $ 20 donation.

A 26-year-old suspect was charged after the shooting that left a 19-year-old man dead and two other young people wounded. The quick action by Meis likely saved lives, police said.
