How a Niche Jazz Imprint, Resonance, Became Record Store Day’s Mascot Label

There’s no such thing as an “official label of Record Store Day,” of course; all of the majors and a significant portion of indie imprints participate in the semi-annual April and November gold rushes for limited-edition vinyl. Harry Winston Splashes Record $50.4 Million on Pink Diamond

THINK PINK: Five minutes of spirited bidding. That’s all it took for the newly named Winston Pink Legacy to go under the hammer for 50.4 million Swiss francs, or $ 50 million, on Tuesday at the Christie’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels sale, setting a world record for the price paid per carat for a pink diamond at auction.
Harry Winston was behind the winning bid. The stone will enter the brand’s legacy collection, which began with the acquisition of the 101-carat, D flawless, Winston Legacy diamond at Christie’s in 2013, Swatch Group chairwoman and Harry Winston chief executive officer Nayla Hayek said in a statement.
The Winston Pink Legacy, a fancy vivid pink rectangular-cut diamond of 18.96 carats representing the most expensive pink diamond ever sold at Christie’s, hailed from the collection of former De Beers owner, the Oppenheimer family.
More than 30,000 people visited the auction house’s sale previews in London, Hong Kong and New York to get a glimpse of the stone. “This exceptional diamond captured the imagination of international collectors across the globe,” said Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s International head of jewelry.
Also commenting on the sale, Eddie LeVian, ceo of jeweler Le Vian, a specialist in chocolate diamonds sourced from the same soon-to-close

Hermès Converts N.Y. Men’s Store Into Record Shop

NEW YORK — Hermès has gotten the memo.
The French luxury brand has taken the movement toward experiential retailing to the next level, completely transforming its men’s store here into a vinyl record store for 10 days.
On Thursday night, the Madison Avenue emporium debuted Silk Mix, an art installation centered around music that has already been showcased in Madrid and Rome and now makes its way into the U.S.
“It’s all about silk and music,” said Robert Chavez, chief executive officer of Hermès. The concept was the brainchild of Véronique Nichanian, artistic director of Hermès men’s wear, and Christophe Goineau, creative director of men’s silk. They worked with Thierry Planelle, who has curated music for the company’s men’s shows for the last 15 years, to bring the idea to life.
The main floor was reworked to replicate an old-fashioned record store with bins of albums on display and a bank of turntables to give them a spin. But these albums had an Hermès twist: each of the covers sported a different silk design from the men’s assortment. “There are 225 styles and 53 different patterns,” Chavez said. “And you can pick your favorite and then play it.”

The album covers were all created from

‘Price Is Right’ Contestant Breaks Plinko Record, Loses His Mind In The Process

It’s not every day you can lead a chant of your own name.

In fact, don’t do that. That should never happen. The one exception is if your name is Ryan and you’re breaking the Plinko record.

On Thursday’s episode of “The Price is Right,” contestant Ryan Belz got the chance to play Plinko, and the guy made the most of it. The contestant’s chips landed in the $ 10,000 slot three times, and he ended up with a total of $ 31,500.

For those who don’t know “Price is Right” history off the top of your head, host Drew Carey said that’s a new Plinko record.

And Belz lost his mind the whole time.

If you weren’t aware, Belz is somewhat of a “Price is Right” fan. You know, somewhat …

In a video on TMZ, the contestant said he’s such a fanatic of the show that he scheduled his classes at Penn State around “Price is Right” so he could watch. Belz even has an impression of the “Price is Right” announcer George Gray.

He said he’s not allowed to appear on the show for another 10 years now, but added, “10 years, mark my word, you know where I’ll be.”

A Virtually Unknown Jean-Michel Basquiat Painting Sold for a Record $110 Million

The sale came after a 10-minute bidding war.

Lifestyle – Esquire

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

Basquiat Painting Sells For Record $110.5 Million At Sotheby’s Auction

A Jean-Michel Basquiat painting just sold for the highest price ever paid at auction for an American artist’s work: a whopping $ 110.5 million.

The 72-by-68-inch acrylic and oil stick “Untitled” painting of a skull by the late graffiti artist was the subject of 10 minutes of intense bidding Thursday night at a Sotheby’s auction in New York City. The opening bid of $ 57 million drew gasps from the audience, Bloomberg reported. Sotheby’s had estimated it would sell for at least $ 60 million.

It was the sixth-highest amount ever paid at auction for any work of art, putting Basquiat in the rarefied company of the celebrated Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. Only 10 works have sold for more than $ 100 million.

The successful bidder, Japanese art collector Yusaku Maezawa, an e-commerce billionaire, announced in an Instagram post showing him standing next to the work that he had “just won this masterpiece.”

“When I first encountered this painting, I was struck with so much excitement and gratitude for my love of art,” he added. “I want to share that experience with as many people as possible.”

Collectors Jerry and Emily Spiegel bought the painting for $ 19,000 in 1984, when Basquiat was virtually unknown and had never been publicly exhibited. Basquiat died of a heroin overdose in 1988 at the age of 27 after painting for seven years. He created the skull in 1982. It’s considered one of his most important works still in private hands.

Maezawa said he plans to loan the work to institutions around the world before making it one of the centerpieces of a museum he has created in his hometown of Chiba, Japan.

The businessman last year bought another 1982 Basquiat painting of a devil at a Christie’s auction for $ 57.3 million, which at the time was the most ever paid for a work by the artist.

The Basquiat was part of a Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction of American post-war paintings that also featured works by such artists as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg.

Red Dot Design Awards Attract Record Number of Entries

DESIGN’S SIGN OF APPROVAL: Designers and manufacturers from 54 countries have entered a record number of more than 5,500 product innovations for this year’s Red Dot Awards. This year’s Product Design awards will be doled out on July 3 at Essen’s Aalto-Theater.
Contenders for the “Red Dot: Best of the Best” will be doled out to such firms as Audi, Kartell, Artemide, Hansgrohe, Bora, Electrolux, LG, Canyon Bicycles, Philips, Puma, Niessing, Apple and Bose. Two recurring themes were nature and sustainability in materials and in product design. One example of that was the “biobrush” toothbrush using plastic and packaging based on cellulose made from leftover wood from sustainable forestry. Virtually carbon neutral, the toothbrush was made with paints and plastic that are biodegradable, even its packaging can be composted for a garden. For that reason, the “biobrush” was awarded the Red Dot: Best of the Best.
Jurors also noted the continued influx of robotics and new technology on the design process. While industrial robots are already prevalent, other robots are starting to be used for mowing lawns, cleaning windows and vacuuming. PuduBOT, this year’s Red Dot: Best of the Best for “robot technology” took a different approach to help waiters. PuduBOT brings

Record PS4 Units Shipped, but Sony Profits Down By Half

Despite a strong outing from the PlayStation brand, Sony’s profits are down for Q3; October 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016.

From a PlayStation perspective, things look very rosy. For the period, 9.7 million PS4 units were sold, an increase from 8.4 million for the year prior, and the best-selling three months for the console in its history. Sony plans to have shipped 60 million units by March, 2017.

Sales increased 5.2 percent year-on-year, while Operating Income for the Games & Network Services sector increased to 50 billion yen ($ 431 million). The reason for the increase, per Sony, is due to the lower PS4 price-point, PS4 software in-store and via the PSN, and the recent release of PlayStation VR.

Zhu Rongji on the Record

Zhu Rongji on the Record

China’s explosive transformation from a planned economy to a more market-oriented one over the past three decades owes much to the charismatic reformer Zhu Rongji. As China’s premier from 1998 to 2003, Zhu displayed a pragmatism and strong work ethic that have been key forces in China’s drive to greater modernization and global stature. During this time, Zhu embarked on a plan to reduce the size of government and reform the heavily indebted banking system and state-owned enterprises as well as to overhaul the housing and health care systems. His sweeping efforts ranged from lobbying for the establishment of stock exchanges to revitalizing agriculture through the introduction of a modern grain market. The ramifications of these reforms are still being felt throughout China and the globe, and The Road to Reform provides a real-time look at these plans as they were being formulated during the 1990s to the early 2000s. The second of a two-volume collection containing more than 100 speeches and personal papers by Zhu, this volume is a revealing and insightful look at Zhu’s thinking and will lead to greater understanding of one of the world’s two largest economic powers.

‘Hamilton’ Breaks Record With 16 Tony Award Nominations

“Hamilton,” the founding fathers-themed musical that you cannot escape (nor should you want to), made history of its own this morning when it received a record 16 Tony Award nominations

The production — a mix of hip-hop, musical theater homages, and semi-biographical information about the late, great Alexander Hamilton — earned nods for categories including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Director, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations and a slew of acting nominations.

The musical trumped the achievements of “The Producers” and “Billy Elliot,” who previously shared the record for the most Tony nominations, with 15 each.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote and stars in the musical, already has a Tony, an Emmy, a Grammy and a Pulitzer to his name, among many other awards, like a MacArthur Genius Grant. As an actor, musician, writer and composer, he’s neatly poised to nab that coveted EGOT acronym if he vies for an Oscar. (He is set to star alongside Emily Blunt in the upcoming “Mary Poppins” reboot, so there’s hope!)

But more than that, Miranda could become the third person in history to acquire the even fancier PEGOT title (acknowledging his Pulitzer win), as Richard Rodgers and Marvin Hamlisch did before him.

Let’s face it, he slayed during his performance at the White House. He can do anything.

If you’re not familiar with the musical “Hamilton,” congratulations on your safe return back from Mars. Now that your comfortably rested and able to peruse the Internet, please catch up here, here and here.

See a full list of the 2016 Tony Award nominations here.

Paul McCartney, Fergie, Other Stars Record ‘Love Song To The Earth’

Music superstars have come together to stress the importance of protecting our environment.

A group of artists, including Paul McCartney, Jon Bon Jovi and Sheryl Crow recorded “Love Song to the Earth” — a new song dedicated to rallying people to climate action and supporting the U.N.’s efforts to get nations to agree on a universal climate agreement.

The song was released on iTunes and Apple Music on September 4, but will have a wide release a week later, according to a press release. Apple, as well as artists, producers and directors involved in the song plan to donate their proceeds to environmental organization Friends of the Earth U.S. and the United Nations Foundation.

Toby Gad, who helped write the star-studded track — which comes out months before December’s climate conference COP21 in Paris — says he hopes the song will open people up to the importance of fighting climate change.

“When the U.N. asked me to write a song about climate change I felt honored and inspired. So, my friends and I wrote ‘Love Song to The Earth’, focusing on a positive message about how precious our only planet is,” Gad said in a statement. “I hope this song will broaden the audience for this urgent message and give the politicians emotional support for meaningful climate agreement in Paris 2015.”

Other stars who were featured in the song include Fergie, Colbie Caillat, Natasha Bedingfield, Leona Lewis, Sean Paul, Johnny Rzeznik, Krewella, Angelique Kidjo, Kelsea Ballerini, Nicole Scherzinger, Christina Grimmie, Victoria Justice and Q’Orianka Kilcher. A video is set to be released on September 11, and will include celebrities, scientists and others holding up messages of support for our environment.

While the artists want to convey a sense of urgency in fighting climate change, Bedingfield, who also helped write the song along with Gad, John Shanks and Sean Paul, says the song is ultimately meant to uplift others in regards to the subject.

“We wanted to write a song that is about how when you love something, you look after it,” Bedingfield said in a statement. “While we know about the environmental issues, we’re unsure if there is any hope. With this song we wanted to talk about the environment in a way that would help people feel empowered to do something rather than be paralyzed by fear.”

The Met’s Costume Institute Breaks Attendance Record With ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’

FOR THE RECORD: The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute has turned up its own summer blockbuster. Over the weekend, “China: Through the Looking Glass” shattered the record-breaking attendance figures for the 2011 exhibition “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.” As of Sunday afternoon, the Andrew Bolton-curated China show had attracted 671,234 visitors, making it The Costume Institute’s most attended exhibition ever. With three weeks to go until its Labor Day closing, the China exhibition may still gain ground on the Met’s other Top 10 visited exhibitions. The McQueen one ranked eighth with 661,509 visitors.
Given “China: Through the Looking Glass’” cross-cultural appeal – designers from around the globe are represented – it is not surprising that museum-goers speaking a variety of languages can be heard in the show’s 16 different galleries. Creative input from artistic director Wong Kar Wai is artistic director and production designer Nathan Crowley no doubt helped drum up interest. The Met is also favorite stop for many of the city’s estimated 55 million annual visitors. For fiscal year 2015 that ended June 30, The Met welcomed 6.3 people, according to a museum spokeswoman. EXCLUSIVE Look At Donald Trump’s Military Record In Light Of His Comments On John McCain

Pew pew pew!

On Saturday, presidential candidate and Mexico’s favorite piñata Donald Trump made some particularly nasty comments about Senator John McCain over his POW experience. Trump said McCain is only a “war hero because he was captured.”

After considerable blowback, Trump remained firm, saying on Sunday that he will not apologize for the comments.

HuffPost has ALL CAPS EXCLUSIVELY ALL CAPS obtained Trump’s own personal military record for comparison:

Here’s How Donald Trump Defended Questioning John McCain’s Military Record

AMES, Iowa – Donald Trump attempted to defend his controversial statements about  Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) during a news conference Saturday — but things got heated when he started bickering with reporters.

The real estate mogul-turned-presidential-candidate took questions from reporters following his comments at the Family Leadership Summit in which he questioned whether Arizona Sen. John McCain (R) was a war hero

In a fiery exchange with reporters, Trump raised his voice, often interrupting before a full question was asked.  At one point, he even yelled at one journalist, telling him to “go back to being a pundit.”

“If a person is captured, they’re a hero as far as I’m concerned,” Trump said. “But you have to do other things also. I don’t like the job John McCain is doing in the Senate. He’s not taking care of our veterans.”

Trump went back and forth with reporters, trying to clarify his statements, but the businessman kept giving different answers as if there was some confusion.

“I like the people who don’t get captured and you have many people who didn’t get captured, I respect them greatly,” he said.

When asked about his multiple student deferments and a medical deferment, which allowed him to avoid service, Trump said “millions of other people” took the same option.

“I was going to college and got student deferments,” Trump said to a swarm of media. “It’s a long time ago, student deferments and ultimately a medical deferment because of my feet. I had a bone spur.”

Trump even went on to say he “wasn’t a big fan” of the Vietnam War and had many friends that served and many that also had student deferments.

“I wasn’t a protester, but the Vietnam war was a disaster for our country. What did we get out of the war other than death,” Trump said.

When asked if he would apologize to the Arizona senator, Trump refused.

The clichéd rivalry between the East and West Coasts of the United States confounds those of us who grew up in distant lands. When it comes to ballet, in particular, many American balletomanes appear oblivious to the bustle outside the precincts of New York City.

On the subject of The Nutcracker, for example, many subscribe to the myth that George Balanchine’s 1954 reinvention of the Russian classic for New York City Ballet “sparked an American holiday tradition” — in the words of Laura Jacobs, who penned a fascinating exploration of Balanchine’s Nutcracker for Vanity Fair, even as she played fast and loose with the essential detail of the ballet’s arrival on American shores.

Other scholars – like Jennifer Fisher, who wrote a sociological meditation on the industry that now props up most American ballet companies (Nutcracker Nation) – identify Willam Christensen’s 1944 production for San Francisco Ballet as the first full-length American production, whose enormous popularity astonished even its creator.

And now a captivating children’s book arrives to set the record straight for the younger generation.

In The Nutcracker Comes to America, author Chris Barton introduces us to the remarkable Christensen brothers, Willam, Harold and Lew, whose “dance-loving, violin-playing grandfather” emigrated from Denmark and settled in Utah. We follow the young men’s zigzagging journeys from the ballet studio to vaudeville stages across the country, to New York to dance for the greats like Balanchine and Fokine, and into the army, against the backdrop of World War II.

Lew, the most naturally gifted of the three, became the first homegrown American danseur noble, and a choreographer of some repute. For Lincoln Kirstein’s Ballet Caravan, he created Filling Station, a comic slice of Americana set in a gas station populated with “truckers, a gangster, a state trooper, and a little girl who really needed to use the restroom.”

The restless Christensens couldn’t seem to stay put. Which turned out to be providential for American ballet, especially on the West Coast. Willam brought ballet to Portland, Oregon, and later established the formidable Salt Lake City company that would be known as Ballet West. In between, there was San Francisco, where he and Harold spun off the ballet troupe from the opera company, while Lew “traded in his ballet shoes for army boots.”

It was during wartime America, when many dancers were off fighting and money was especially scarce, that Willam needed a big hit “to keep ballet alive in San Francisco.” He loved the great Russian classics and though he’d never seen them performed – at least not in their entirety – he would research them painstakingly. As part of his research for The Nutcracker, he cornered Balanchine and Alexandra Danilova and had them recount for him as much of the detail of the Petipa production as they could recall from their own experience dancing in it.

The Christensens’ peregrinations, and the delightful goings-on onstage and backstage during the first Nutcracker, are illuminated in the arresting illustrations by Cathy Gendron – multiple coatings of thin oil glaze meticulously layered over pencil drawings on gesso, then lightly textured, as if burnished by steel wool. The colors glow softly on the page, and the whimsical yet realistic figures convey energy and emotion that will intrigue adults as much as children.

Ballet to the People‘s favorite drawing is of Lew Christensen on a New York City sidewalk, still in his army uniform, having just returned from wartime service. He is looking wistfully through the windows of a ballet studio while class is in session. The narrative reads: “[Y]ears in the army had done a number on his body. He couldn’t dance like he’d danced before.”

Lew would eventually bring the Balanchine technique and style to San Francisco Ballet in the early 1950’s, when he took over the company reins after Willam moved to Salt Lake City.

Don’t be misled by the book title. This is much more than the story of the transplanting of a famous Russian ballet. And not just a book for little girls who dream of dancing in tutus and pink satin pointe shoes.

This is a real-life adventure story about “a trio of small-town Utah boys” with grit and talent, who bucked stereotypes, endured failures and persevered, and who individually and together enriched the cultural life of America.

For older readers and adults (and dance writers keen to fill in the gaps in their historical knowledge), Barton provides a more detailed timeline at the end of the book, including some marvelous vintage photos.

Throughout the children’s tale and the more grown-up addendum, a light wit prevails, and there is much to read between the lines. About the 1892 premiere of The Nutcracker at the Mariinsky Theatre, Barton comments laconically, “It does not catch on.” And those who are familiar with the hard business of ballet know that it was the Christensens’ sheer determination that kept San Francisco Ballet afloat for decades.

English critic Richard Buckle famously groused that every Christmas brings us “one more Nutcracker closer to death.”

Yet across America, spurred by the early Christensen and Balanchine productions, and by the popularity of the brilliantly animated ‘Nutcracker Suite’ in Disney’s Fantasia, the ballet has become a hallowed ritual — not just for audiences, but for the legions of young performers who grow up through the ranks of mice, soldiers, Mother Ginger’s children, candy canes, snowflakes, waltzing flowers, and Russian acrobats, their eyes on the prize: the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier.

So many of those young dancers in training are unaware of the colorful history behind this tradition. Barton and Gendron’s new book does its bit to fill that gap, with charm and wisdom.

First Edition Of ‘The Hobbit’ Sets Record Price For J.R.R. Tolkien’s Novel

It didn’t come from the mines of Erebor, but it’s definitely worth a fortune.

A first edition copy of “The Hobbit” sold for £137,000 (nearly $ 210,000) at a Sotheby’s auction in London earlier this week, more than doubling the previous record for a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s first novel.

The book had been given to one of his former students, Katherine Kilbride, in 1937. The Guardian notes that Tolkien inscribed it with a poem in Old English, which roughly translates to:

“There is many a thing in the West-regions unknown to me, marvels and strange beings, a land fair and lovely, the homeland of the Elves, and the bliss of the Gods …”

Tolkien inscribed very few copies of the novel upon publication, Sotheby’s said. Other lucky recipients included close friend C.S. Lewis, author of the Chronicles of Narnia series. Take a look at the book below.
