Declining Sales at All Divisions Sink Tailored Brands’ Q1 Results

The woes continued at Tailored Brands in the first quarter.
On Wednesday, the Fremont, Calif.-based retailer reported net income for the quarter fell to $ 7.1 million, or 14 cents a diluted share, from $ 13.9 million, or 27 cents, a year earlier. Results for the most-recent quarter included $ 4.4 million in restructuring charges to pay severance and terminate leases.
Adjusted earnings per share fell to 21 cents from 50 cents a year earlier.
Sales for the three months ended May 4, decreased 4.5 percent to $ 781.4 million from $ 818 million. On a comparable-store basis, sales also declined at each division, falling 4.5 percent at the flagship Men’s Wearhouse, 0.7 percent at Jos. A. Bank, 4.6 percent at Moores in Canada and 0.5 percent at K&G. Sales at the corporate apparel division dropped the most, posting a 10.1 percent decline in the period.
The company attributed much of the soft showing to fewer transactions and units per transactions, and cited lower clothing sales at Men’s Wearhouse in particular.
Investors were already on guard and sent shares of the company down 6.1 percent in regular trading Wednesday only to go further after the results came out, pushing the stock down another 6 percent to $ 5.54 after hours.

Fur Supporters Plan to Keep Fighting New York City’s Proposed Ban on Fur Sales

Fur industry advocates plan to continue to turn up the heat on the New York City Council, in response to its proposal for a bill that would ban the sale of fur apparel.
Initially put forward by Council Speaker Corey Johnson and City Council members Mark Levine, Fernando Cabrera, Justin Brannan, Helen Rosenthal and Robert Holden, the proposal has since been moved to the Committee on Consumer Affairs and Business Licensing for further discussion.
If approved, violations would be punished by a civil penalty of no more than $ 500 for the first violation, and no less than $ 500, but no more than $ 1,500 for subsequent violations. Fur apparel sold or offered for sale would be subject to seizure and forfeiture.
Nancy Daigneault, vice president of the Americas for the International Fur Federation, said Friday that a number of furriers and other fur advocates have met with their respective council members and have contacted their offices. “In the last week, furriers have been picking up the phone and calling themselves and meeting with City Council members in their district, or sometimes staff if the members aren’t available,” she said. “We’re hopeful that the city will listen that it’s an ill-conceived ban. Herno’s New Showroom Seen as Key to Increasing U.S. Sales

NEW YORK – Herno is stepping up its efforts to expand in the U.S. market.
The Italian luxury outerwear brand has opened a permanent showroom on Varick Street in Tribeca to better service its existing customers — which include Neiman Marcus, Barneys New York, Nordstrom and Mitchell — and others seeking a sartorial alternative to the ubiquitous Canada Goose and Moncler puffers.
Herno has had a small presence in the U.S. in the past and had been represented by the M5 Showroom, which is located in the same building. But now Claudio Marenzi, president and chief executive officer, has moved a few floors down and opened a cleanly designed space where the brand can present its full offering of men’s, women’s and children’s coats hanging on hooks similar to how they are displayed in its retail stores.
Herno is sharing the floor with Woolrich. Although the two brands have no professional affiliation, Marenzi said they are friendly competitors with a mutual respect. Both firms had been represented by M5 and wanted to have their own space, so it was a practical decision.
Marenzi said that over the past five years the U.S. has grown to represent a larger chunk of Herno’s business. It now

Italy’s Men’s Sales, Exports Grow in 2018, Brands Support MFW

MILAN — Trade policies, Brexit uncertainties, social protests in France and European political elections are factors that could influence the economy this year, but Brunello Cucinelli is unwavering: “Of one thing I am sure: it’s not true that men don’t want to buy, I don’t believe this at all.” With “at least three different posts” on social media per day, men “must change depending on the occasion. We take more care of our looks because we will be posted. It’s a new way of life,” he argued.
Figures released by Centro Studi of fashion industry association Confindustria Moda support this positive take — even 2019 is seen as “stable” compared with 2018 and showing “limited dynamism,” based on the spring 2019 orders. That said, the Italian men’s wear industry is expected to report 2018 sales of 9.44 billion euros, up 1.5 percent compared with 2017.
Men’s wear accounts for 17.5 percent of Italy’s textile and fashion revenues and 27.9 percent of all apparel. The first half of 2018 was particularly brisk, with exports up 5.5 percent, but business slowed starting last summer. Consumer spending in Italy was defined by the association as “one of the worst [since] 2013.” However, 2018 year-end figures

Maskit Looks to Build U.S. Sales With NYFW Event and Art Installation

MASKIT TAKES NEW YORK: Friends of the Israel Defense Forces’ tristate region is hosting Maskit Fashion House’s NYFW debut today at Metropolitan West. Started in 1954 and known as the first fashion house of Israel, the company belonged to the Israeli government in its earlier years. The idea was to provide work for immigrants and to teach them craftsmanship as well as new techniques. In its prime, there were 2,000 employees and 10 freestanding stores, including a Fifth Avenue location. In 1994, it was shut down before being revived five years ago. Head designer Sharon Tal interned for Alber Elbaz at one point, before specializing in embroidery at Alexander McQueen. The brand is now backed by Lyn and Stef Wertheimer and is being shown for a limited time in New York.
In addition to the fashion show, the company is showcasing a large-scale art project titled “Mount Sodom” by Israeli fashion photographer Eyal Nevo. On view at 10 Times Square through Oct. 6, the project features dancers from the Inbal Dance Theater, Israel’s first and oldest modern dance company. Mount Sodom premiered in Tel Aviv in June in the presence of Israel’s first lady.

Men’s Continues to Gain Ground as Sales Increase

LAS VEGAS — Men’s wear represents 40 percent of the global apparel market and continues to grow both in popularity and penetration for most retailers. With that experience as the backdrop, merchants shopping the shows here earlier this week were in upbeat spirits as they scoured the aisles for the latest trend-right product to fuel that men’s wear momentum heading into next year.
Christine Wu, senior trend analyst for the Doneger Group, said the men’s wear market is projected to increase to $ 33 billion in sales by 2020, up 14 percent from $ 29 billion in 2015, the most recent figure available from Euromonitor International. Among the most popular categories are activewear-inspired pieces that offer performance and technology attributes, as well as streetwear, both at the designer and more democratically priced level.
Patty Leto, senior vice president of merchandising for Doneger, said that in order to sustain the strong showing, retailers have to reach men on their own terms and provide a “targeted and more personal approach to the assortment.” This will require a “necessary recalibration” of the business.
But because men’s wear doesn’t move that quickly, that recalibration will boil down to subtle updates of the current trends, notably nostalgia, outdoor lifestyle and

Takashi Murakami Exhibit in Boston Sparks Sellout Sales

EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP: The artist Takashi Murakami is a one-man brand, thanks in part to collaborations with Louis Vuitton and fans like Karl Lagerfeld and Pharrell Williams.
His global reach has helped to fuel sales in the Murakami shop at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston where “Takashi Murakami: Lineage of Eccentrics” is a few weeks into its five-and-a-half month run, completed with the esteemed Japanese art historian Nobuo Tsuji. The duo selected the objects on display with the artist creating paintings and sculpture in direct response to such Japanese masterpieces from the MFA’s collection as Soga Shōhaku’s 35-foot-long “Dragon and Clouds” (1763), and the Heiji Scroll dating back to the second half of the 13th century.
Sales have been so brisk that the opening night party registered among the highest hourly sales that the MFA has ever had, according to a museum spokeswoman. The artist’s limited-edition prints sold out in a flash with one shopper flying in from Atlanta to buy “Korin: Dark Matter.” With a waiting list at 250 and growing, the prints have been reordered and a new shipment from Japan is expected later this year.
Other bestsellers include T-shirts and sweatshirts, tallying about 600 units in sales.

Selfridges Sees Sales Surge 16% in Fiscal 2016-17

LONDON – Selfridges saw sales surge 16 percent in fiscal 2016-17 to 1.6 billion pounds, boosted by an expanded accessories hall and by Selfridges.com, which the retailer said exceeded expectations in the fiscal year ended January 28, 2017.
The privately held Selfridges said that operating profit climbed 18 percent to 180 million pounds year-on-year.
Paul Kelly, managing director of Selfridges Group, said the results came from the “success of our long-term planning, and implementation of an ambitious program of capital expenditure across all channels and stores.”
As reported, Selfridges is three years into a 300 million pound capital expenditure program, which has seen investment in the e-commerce site and the opening of phase one of its new accessories hall, with the second phase set to open at the end of November.
The full job will be completed in summer 2018, and Selfridges said the refurbished, expanded halls will become the largest destination for luxury accessories in the world.
The company said that more than 200 million pounds of additional sales were generated in 2016-17 from the e-commerce site, from newly refurbished spaces at the Birmingham and Manchester stores and from the bigger London store.
Anne Pitcher, Selfridges’ managing director, said there was growth across all product

Ashley Graham, Candice Huffine Reflect on Impacting More Than Just Sales With Lane Bryant Ads

NEW YORK — Being on the set of a national lingerie ad campaign with major models conjures a stereotype of thumping music, empty Champagne glasses and frazzled assistants scurrying to-and-fro, procuring their every demand.
But the vibe was far more girl power than fashion diva at Lane Bryant’s shoot for its fall lingerie campaign on Monday.
Reprising their roles in the latest ads were Ashley Graham of TED Talks, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition and Candice Huffine, whose May cover of Elle and runway jaunt for Prabal Gurung have her on the radars of major casting directors. And while these women have been modeling for the plus-size retailer for well over a decade, it’s only been in the last few years that they’ve caught the attention of the overall fashion industry — not to mention the public, whose outcry for stylish clothes in a greater size range is finally being heard.
“I wanted to be a model so badly, it was my calling,” said 32-year-old Huffine, who has been modeling for 17 years, 10 of those signed with Lane Bryant. Even after all that time, she didn’t anticipate the fame that would sweep over her and her fellow plus-size models who appeared in the 2015 “I’m

Ivanka Trump’s Clothing Sales Increased In 2016

Perhaps Ivanka Trump didn’t need that glowing endorsement from Kellyanne Conway to help boost profits.

Trump’s businesses are mentioned virtually every time she is, and those mentions came fast and furious over the past year she helped her father become president. There were also headlines over boycotts of Trump products, stores that dropped her lines, accusations of copying designs, retweets from the official White House Twitter account and the hypocrisy of importing goods made in China as her father insisted he’d rebuild the country with American labor

It all combined for a hefty increase in sales in 2016.

G-III Apparel Group, Ltd., which licenses Trump’s clothing collection (her shoe line is licensed through Marc Fisher), reported a “$ 17.9 million increase in net sales of Ivanka Trump licensed products” for the year ending January 31. The company credits the brand with helping bring up its gross profits as a whole, according to a new annual report released April 3.

There were observed drops in sales over the period ― at Nordstrom, for example ― and while sales of G-III-licensed merchandise continued to increase, they did so at a significantly slower pace. Forbes reported the brand did $ 100 million in revenue with G-III during the 2015 fiscal year, when it saw net sales increase by $ 24.9 million over 2014.

Trump’s brand declined to comment, and G-III did not return a request for comment by the time of publication. A spokesperson did tell Refinery 29 off-record Monday that “while Ivanka Trump might have been one of its faster growing brands last year, it is not one of the larger brands that the company operates.” The Calvin Klein label, for example, saw twice as much growth for G-III, garnering an increase in sales of $ 43.7 million.

The news adds fuel to the fire engulfing the Trump family’s numerous conflicts of interest. While Trump announced she was stepping down from her company in January and prohibited the brand from using her likeness in March, she still receives financial reports and profits from the company, even after becoming an official White House employee. An ethics expert told The Huffington Post last month that the only way Trump can truly avoid a conflict of interest is to sell the company or decline a job in the White House.

The only things that seem certain is that Trump’s brand, like her position in the White House, will continue to be a point of contention during her father’s presidency ― and that any publicity really is good publicity.

Ermenegildo Zegna Profitability, Sales Dented in 2016; CEO Sees Growth in 2017

MILAN — Putting 2016 down as “a transitional” year, Gildo Zegna, chief executive officer of the Ermenegildo Zegna Group, is banking on a new brand strategy, the company’s newly reorganized structure and a rebound in China and Europe to boost business in 2017.
“I am confident we will grow again this year; we started off on the right foot,” said Zegna in a phone interview ahead of boarding a plane for Dubai to join artistic director Alessandro Sartori on a number of personal appearances in the region. “One-on-one relations are fundamental, Alex is almost like a personal stylist in some cases,” said Zegna.
While 2017 looks promising, results last year were hit by extraordinary costs and write-offs, as well as lackluster sales in the group’s main markets.
In 2016, Zegna’s net profit fell 55.5 percent to 20 million euros, or $ 22 million, from 45 million euros, or $ 49.9 million, in 2015.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization dropped 14.3 percent to 125 million euros, or $ 137.5 million, from 146 million euros, or $ 162 million, the previous year.
Revenues decreased 8.2 percent to 1.15 billion euros, or $ 1.26 billion, compared with 1.26 billion euros, or $ 1.4 billion, in 2015. At constant exchange, sales were down

Sales Of Ivanka Trump Products Surged Last Month

Ivanka Trump’s clothing and accessories brand saw a spike in sales in February, according to the company’s president and market research data.

Abigail Klem, who took over as president of the brand after President Donald Trump’s daughter stepped down in January, said the company has seen near-unprecedented success since last month.

“Since the beginning of February, they were some of the best performing weeks in the history of the brand,” Klem said in a statement. “For several different retailers Ivanka Trump was a top performer online, and in some of the categories it was the [brand’s] best performance ever.”

While the company does not publicly share sales figures, recent market research reports backed up Klem’s statement.

Lyst, a British e-commerce website that sells thousands of different brands, said sales of Ivanka Trump products increased 346 percent between January and February, while sales of the brand are up 557 percent over last year. Ivanka Trump was the site’s 11th most popular brand in February, up from 550th in January.

“To see such an extreme spike in one month is completely unheard of and came as a huge surprise to us,” Lyst spokeswoman Sarah Tanner told the BBC earlier this week.

Market research firm Slice Intelligence, which tracks purchases from 4.4 million consumers who have allowed the firm to analyze their email receipts, saw a 207 percent increase in purchases of Ivanka Trump products between January and February. (The same firm reported a 26 percent drop in the brand’s sales in January over the same month of the previous year.)

Amazon, one of the most high-profile retailers carrying Ivanka Trump products, did not immediately respond to a request for sales figures for the brand. However, Ivanka Trump perfume is currently the website’s best-selling fragrance.

And a company spokesperson said sales of the brand were up by 21 percent in 2016 over the previous year’s sales.

That spike may be attributable to increased public interest in the Trump family over the last year. The February sales surge coincided with the president’s first month in office, during which Ivanka Trump made multiple high-profile appearances, including at the inauguration and the president’s address to a joint session of Congress.

The surge also came after several stores, including Nordstrom, dropped or stopped promoting the clothing line amid calls for boycotts against companies that sell Trump family products.

Following Nordstrom’s announcement, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway urged consumers to “go buy Ivanka’s stuff.”

“I’m going to give a free commercial here,” she said Feb. 9 during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.” “Go buy it today, everybody. You can find it online.”

Many ethics experts condemned Conway’s remarks, and the Office of Government Ethics called on the White House to discipline her for potentially violating a rule prohibiting officials from using their positions of power to promote products. However, the White House declined to penalize Conway, arguing the comment was made “in a light, off-hand manner.”

The president himself attacked Nordstrom for dropping Ivanka Trump products, tweeting that the department store chain treated his daughter “unfairly.”

‘1984’ Sales Have Skyrocketed. Here’s What To Read Next.

Last week, after Kellyanne Conway gave an interview describing falsehoods as “alternative facts,” sales of George Orwell’s decades-old classic 1984 spikedThe book, a part of so many high-school syllabi, appears to be helping people contextualize political rhetoric; the sales boost even led Michiko Kakutani at The New York Times to write an homage to the still-relevant novel, headlined “Why ‘1984’ Is a 2017 Must-Read.”

But, as The New Republic pointed out, it’s not the only title that can offer valuable insight. Writer Josephine Livingston suggested that Franz Kafka’s The Trial might be a more salient comparison. Sophie Gilbert noted in The Atlantic that Sinclair Lewis and Hannah Arendt books have also seen sales boosts in the past year.

When it comes to undermining the media, controlling the dissemination of information and political leaders’ contradictions, there’s plenty of literary precedent. If you’ve read Orwell and are looking for more novels on these topics, there’s a range of dystopian and realistic fiction grappling with censorship and propaganda. We’ve collected a few below:

The Tsar of Love and Techno by Anthony Marra

Marra’s connected stories span generations, showing how history erodes certain truths and throws others into relief. The first story is about a more concrete kind of censorship; its protagonist works in Joseph Stalin’s Department of Party Propaganda and Agitation, literally removing faces from paintings and newspapers. When he fails to do his job, haunted by the face of a familiar-looking ballerina, there are consequences.

The Word Exchange by Alena Graedon

The dystopian world imagined by Graedon isn’t so dissimilar from our own, which is what makes her novel particularly frightening. A sort of neurological disease has the potential to infect the tech-obsessed, making them no longer able to communicate clearly. Deeper readers remain more or less immune to the affliction, anchored as they are in context.

The Noise of Time by Julian Barnes

Barnes’ latest novel isn’t a dystopian one, but an intimate look at the life of an artist under tyrannical watch. Composer Dmitri Shostakovich goes unnoticed by Stalin until the ruler makes his negative thoughts on his music clear. He’s neither killed nor exiled, but instead made to represent Soivet ideals, forcing him to question which is more valuable: his art or his life.

Censoring an Iranian Love Story by Shahriar Mandanipour

In his review of Mandanipour’s novel, the critic James Wood reminded readers that “tyranny is the mother of metaphor, and all that.” In other words, a novelist hailing from a country where censorship is a literary restriction might get creative with his storytelling methods. Such is the case in this love story, centered on what can and can’t be communicated publicly about a private relationship.

The Flame Alphabet by Ben Marcus

Ah, teens. Their tendency to spew righteous, thinly researched nonsense is annoying, but it’s harmless ― endearing, even. Right? Not so in Marcus’ experimental novel, where the language of young people is physically harmful to their parents. Naturally, chaos follows; unethical testing practices ensue, and the novel’s hero, Sam, strikes out on his own to find a cure. Which is all to say that words are as capable of harm as actions.

The Circle by Dave Eggers

When we imagine censorship, we imagine good citizens silenced by overt governmental mandates, finding clever new ways to express themselves in spite of noxious restrictions. In Eggers’ novel ― soon to be adapted into a film ― censorship is more complicated than that. It stems instead from a well-meaning corporate culture gone awry. At the Circle ― a Google-meets-Facebook conglomerate ― openness is valued over privacy, and self-censorship arises as a result.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Another beloved book soon to be adapted for the screen, Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is about a religious fundamentalist movement that occurs swiftly, oppressing women in its wake. In this imagined dystopia, called Gilead, women are issued uniforms and are separated from their families. They’re also not allowed to read ― knowledge, after all, is freeing.

Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart

If the choppy-sounding title of Shteyngart’s most recent novel ― Super Sad True Love Story ― doesn’t sound to you like Doublespeak, maybe the 1984 connection will be made clearer by its premise. In a near-future society where personal devices and individual “scores” are obsessed over, relationships are stripped of their nuance and intimate connection is nearly impossible. Sad!

The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson

In Johnson’s portrayal of North Korea, the government is prone to doing one thing while publicly declaring that it’s doing an entirely different thing. It’s a tactic that, on an individual level, can lead citizens to question their own perceptions of reality; on a large, governmental scale, the method of control is even more potent. To illustrate the rift between private and public knowledge, the book is told both from a first-person perspective, using the language of sheeny propaganda.

Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut

An apolitical playwright — American born, German raised — stays in Germany during World War II, and joins onto the Nazis’ propaganda campaign. After the war, he returns to America, where he eventually becomes a symbol of a white supremacist group. The story, like Vonnegut’s Bluebeard, is written as he narrates the writing of his own diary.

Destination XL Lowers Guidance After Soft Holiday Sales

The holidays were not kind to Destination XL Group, Inc..
The Massachusetts-based big & tall men’s apparel retailer, said total sales for the nine-week holiday sales period ending Dec. 31, 2016 decreased to $ 97.9 million, compared with $ 98.2 million for the same period of the prior year. Additionally, comparable-store sales for the period fell 1.4 percent.
As a result, the retailer has updated guidance to the low-end of its previously announced full-year range.
“The retail apparel environment was challenging over the holiday selling season, but we were pleased with our store results on the East and West coasts,” said David Levin, president and chief executive officer.  “We believe our strategic decision to eliminate a fall television advertising campaign, while increasing our digital advertising spend, impacted top-line performance across the country, but resulted in a better return on investment in the current environment.”
Levin said that during the November/December period, the company saw “a noticeable migration with our ‘gift-giver’ this season to online shopping.” As a result, he said the company’s direct business performed well, but it was “not enough to offset the decline in store sales. We are managing our expenses very well, which we expect will allow us to meet the low-end of our

Frieze London Sees Strong Sales, So Far, in an Uneasy Economic Climate

ARTFUL DODGING: Frieze Art, the London contemporary art fair, wrapped up Saturday with sold-out stands and no hint — yet — of cash-strapped collectors or repercussions from the economic slowdown in China. In the third quarter, the country notched its slowest growth in six years.
“A lot of our galleries are experiencing their best Frieze ever,” said Abby Bangster, the artistic director for Frieze Americas and Asia. “I’ve spoken to the galleries that are based in China and are here, and they have completely sold out. It’s not just Chinese buying Chinese, they have big London and American buyers. We also have a good number of Chinese collectors. We so far have not been impacted, but it is certainly something that we’re watching.”
The 13th edition of the four-day fair, held at Regent’s Park in London, saw 164 galleries from 27 countries take part. Galleries showcased works by artists including Camille Henrot; Mary Weatherford; Gabriel Orozco; Abraham Cruzvillegas, and Jimmie Durham.
While Frieze did not disclose the total amount of sales at the fair, it did release some figures from individual galleries. White Cube sold a painting by Damien Hirst for 750,000 pounds, or $ 1.16 million, while a work by Gabriel Orozco sold for $ 900,000 at Kurimanzutto. An oil painting by Chris Ofili
