Nick Graham Expands Into Sportswear, Swimwear

Nick Graham is creating a collection. The designer and founder of the Joe Boxer brand will introduce sportswear and swimwear under the Nick Graham label for spring 2020 at the Project show in Las Vegas next week. The sportswear collection is being called “Happy America” and is inspired by Fifties Miami Beach with a healthy dose of Graham’s signature ironic sense of humor. Rayon shirts, for example, are offered in pastel colors and feature prints such as a parrot smoking a pipe and wearing fedora and toucans with headphones and a flamingo with a large dollar sign. “They’re not so subtle, but then I’ve never been subtle,” the designer said with a laugh. He said he was inspired by a time when America “was simpler and not so complicated. I was looking at some imagery from that era, and the style seemed to match the optimism of the day. I wanted to try to capture that feeling.” The collection includes unstructured sport coats, slim five-pocket jeans and chinos in stretch twill and multicolor cotton polos. The swimwear is offered in a variety of conversational prints that coordinate with the rayon shirts to create a cabana set look. Printed baseball caps and fedoras with novelty headbands

Madewell Offers Extended Sizing in Sportswear and Dresses

MADEWELL EXTENDS RANGE: Madewell, a division of J. Crew, is expanding its extended sizing offerings.
This past spring, Madewell introduced denim in extended sizes 33 to 35 and new fits like the Curvy Jean. Now it has extended its sizing in denim to 37 and dresses, knits, sweaters, tops, and jackets from XXS to 3X, across 40 percent of the Madewell collection. The extended size range became available Tuesday. All pieces are available for purchase on madewell.com.
Top denim styles will be offered in select Madewell stores across the country through its Dot-Com Try-On program, which allows customers to try on all sizes and styles in person and place their order with a store associate. The retailer offers free shipping for in-store and online customers who have joined their free loyalty program.
Madewell is rolling out extended sizing in-store slowly so the team can continue to fine-tune offerings based on customer feedback. The goal is to have the majority of extended sizing available in-store by next year. Prices on the extended sizes are the same as straight sizes.
Earlier this month, J. Crew said it was partnering with Universal Standard, which caters to sizes 6 to 32, on a capsule collection and was rolling out

Corridor Men’s Sportswear Fetes NoLIta Store

Creating a fashion collection is a far cry from working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, but that’s the journey Dan Snyder took with his men’s brand, Corridor.
Snyder started his business career as an independent contractor for the government agency but hated the way his suits fit. So he borrowed his aunt’s vintage Kenmore sewing machine and learned how to sew. He started making shirts in his East Village walk-up in New York and decided to take a booth at the Capsule show to test the waters. He wrote orders with 12 independent men’s wear stores from that one rack in 2013 and was on his way.
Today, Corridor, which Snyder refers to as “new American sportswear [that] melds Northeastern prep with New York City’s modern sensibility,” is now carried in 90 stores in the U.S. and internationally including Stag, Unionmade and others that serve a contemporary men’s shopper. The line has also grown to include jackets, pants, shorts, accessories and a small women’s wear component.
And on Thursday, the company will host a party at its store on Mott Street in NoLIta to introduce the brand to press and influencers.
“We’ve grown organically since we started,” Snyder said. “And we believe it

Clandestina Becomes First Cuban Sportswear Label to Sell E-commerce

While political relations between the U.S. and Cuba might be chilly, the Havana-based Clandestina drove into the U.S. market by launching e-commerce.
Despite the barely month-old travel warning for American citizens and allegations of sonic attacks on staffers at the U.S. Embassy in Havana, Clandestina founder Idania del Río is trying to cozy up to the American market. Started in 2015 with Leire Fernández, the company is now the first Cuban fashion brand to sell online. While importing goods from Cuba remains challenging and costly due to U.S. legislation, independent designers in Cuba can provide their design services to American customers. Del Río and her team design all of the six styles that are offered online in the company’s studio. They are then digitally uploaded to American manufacturers that print, produce and ship the finished product to consumers in the U.S. and abroad.
Unreliable Internet and phone service, limited resources and distance from global markets are some of the factors that have deterred Cuba-based entrepreneurs from going global. To that point, a phone interview with Del Rio required numerous attempts due to the spotty phone connection “Sometimes it’s better, sometimes it’s worse. In the rain, it’s even more terrible,” she said.

What to Watch: Sportswear Dollars Now Spread Around the World

It’s no surprise that some of the stalwarts in the sportswear arena have been struggling of late.
Ralph Lauren, whose polo has long been an industry staple, is in the midst of a major restructuring as revenues continue to shrink. After a rocky 18 months under Stefan Larsson as chief executive officer, the company named Patrice Louvet of Procter & Gamble to the top spot to help the brand navigate the rapidly changing fashion landscape.
But the company is not alone is searching out ways to reverse its fortunes. Nautica recently had a change at the top, tapping Brendan Sullivan from VF Corp., its parent company, to succeed Karen Murray as president. And J. Crew has also had its share of problems: longtime chief Millard “Mickey” Drexler stepped down as chief executive officer and handed the reins to West Elm’s James Brett.
As these companies work to right their ships, other brands have started to make headway. Thanks to a Nineties resurgence, Tommy Hilfiger is hot again and other labels such as Vineyard Vines and Psycho Bunny continue to gain momentum. Although the bulk of the sales for these large American brands come through bricks-and-mortar stores, the online competition continues to heighten, particularly

A. Sauvage to Launch Sportswear Collection After Moving Studio to L.A.

Adrien Sauvage, who established his men’s wear label A. Sauvage in London in 2010, has become the latest designer to decamp for Los Angeles, opening up a studio in Beverly Hills this summer.
“Basically I came here for Christmas holiday and I never went back,” said Sauvage, who said Robert Downey Jr. was among the first of his clients to encourage the move. Sauvage launched his line of contemporary suiting in Harrods, then opened his own shop on Bond Street, and today his made-to-measure pieces are also available online. He still travels back to London every eight weeks for his made-to-measure clients, but says the California lifestyle has inspired a new idea — a sportswear line due out in January.
“I surveyed the land of T-shirts. I thought two or three years ago the whole sportswear thing was going to go in the bin, but it’s still here. It’s even tweaked my own style a bit. My sportswear line is going to have a casual elegance, the whole seven days a week wardrobe. It’s perfect for getting on or off a plane,” he said. He is still exploring wholesale partners for the line.
Sauvage has several star NBA clients, such as Dwyane Wade,

Daniel Hechter to Launch Men’s Sportswear Line

Daniel Hechter is making a bigger play in the U.S.
The brand, which was started by Hechter as a women’s collection in 1962 and moved into men’s and children’s six years later, wants to broaden its reach with a sportswear collection it will present at New York Men’s Day on Monday. The line will launch exclusively with Macy’s in October.
“We saw this as an opportunity to bring a European brand to the U.S.,” said Mark Bushby, the men’s sales director at Daniel Hechter. “We thought there was a white space in the market for affordable, European designer product.”
According to Bushby, who was previously the men’s director at Calvin Klein Collection, the sportswear line is an attempt to make the entire lifestyle assortment more contemporary. The collection, which is designed in Paris, consists of shirts, sweaters, jerseys, pants, blazers, lightweight outerwear and leather pieces. The line retails from around $ 75 to $ 450.
Hechter is no longer involved with the line, which he sold to Miltenberger-Otto Aulbach GmbH in 1998. The collection is carried in 2,500 points of sale globally and the sportswear is licensed by Shanghai Shenda America LLC.
Although the company is expanding its reach in the U.S., Bushby said the market has

Sportswear Drives Upbeat Paris Season for Men’s Buyers

PARIS — If the Paris men’s wear shows proved anything, it’s that the sportswear trend is set to run and run — pardon the pun. Tracksuits, sneakers, hoodies, graphic T-shirts, anoraks, zip-up jackets and even surf gear were among the key trends that energized buyers at the spring collections.
“The well-tailored formal attire has been retired to the back of the closet, only to be replaced by a plethora of athletic apparel,” said Tom Kalenderian, executive vice president, general merchandise manager of men’s and Chelsea Passage at Barneys New York. “Call it what you will: ‘street’ or ‘active’ — regardless, it is becoming standard issue for every man’s wardrobe.”
Despite a heat wave on the first two days of the collections, retailers felt an upbeat vibe in the French capital, and many were happy to loosen the purse strings. Footwear was especially strong, they noted.
“The footwear trend of the moment is the runner, often built on a ‘sock’ construction and in amazing color combinations reminiscent of rich Indonesian patterns in a pop color palette,” said Kalenderian.
“We feel really energized by what we’ve seen here in Paris,” said Dean Cook, men’s wear buying manager at Brownsfashion.com. “There’s a lot of creativity here and that

Silver Jeans to Offer Sportswear for Spring

Silver Jeans Co. is getting into the sportswear game.
The Canadian denim brand has licensed Modextil Inc. to manufacture and market a line of men’s sportswear as well as men’s and women’s outerwear under the Silver Jeans Co. label. It will launch at the Project trade show in August for the spring season.
Based in Montreal, Modextil holds the licenses for the Save the Duck and Report Collection.
“We strongly believe the expansion of product categories will further enhance our brand and its strategies,” said Michael Silver, chief executive officer of Silver Jeans. “Modextil has many years of experience in the men’s wear category, and we feel the combination of that expertise and our brand heritage and values will result in an extremely positive future for both our companies.”
The line will take its cues from the denim collection and will include T-shirts, long-sleeve Henleys and joggers in stretch fabrics such as jersey. Techniques including enzyme washes and garment dyes will be used, and details such as Western snaps, chain stitching and textured yarns will also be employed in the sportswear offering.
For the outerwear, lightweight hoodies, overshirts and jackets such as the M65 bomber style with distressing and vintage elements will be featured. Details including rivets, shank

Columbia Sportswear Develops ‘Rogue One’ Limited-Edition Jackets

GOING ROGUE: As far as movie fans go, “Star Wars” followers are known to be more zealous than most. And now thanks to Columbia Sportswear, they can dress the part for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
Working in tandem with Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media, the company has developed three styles of jackets inspired by “Rogue One” characters Sergeant Jyn Erso, Captain Cassian Andor and the Imperial Death Trooper.
The limited-edition cinematic venture is a first for Columbia Sportswear, which will offer the trio of products through it’s web site and select stores starting Dec. 9. The $ 400 Jyn Erso Rebel jacket is a stretch twill cotton jacket with leather details on the sleeves. The style borrows from the look of one worn by Felicity Jones, who plays Erso. Its quilted insulated vest can be worn in its own or as a base layer. More heavy-duty is the $ 500 Captain Cassian Andor Rebel Parka, a parka with a detachable sherpa-lined hood with faux fur trim detail. The waterproof breathable jacket also has Omni-Heatä Reflective lining, which is meant to help the wearer retain heat.
