DVF Hosts a Night Under the Stars — Selfie Edition

STAR SEARCH: Diane von Furstenberg arrived at her holiday party in New York on Tuesday night hoisting a burning object — apropos given her fund-raising role for the new Statue of Liberty Museum, and the liberty theme of her summer collection.
The object was, in fact, a roll of smudging sage that she used to perfume her flagship Meatpacking boutique, and a new, adjacent 600-square-foot room she christened as an “interactive, experiential” gallery celebrating zodiac signs. Visitors can take in — i.e.  take selfies for Instagram — Konstantin Kakanias artworks on the walls and thousands of Swarovski crystals dangling from the ceiling. They can also park themselves on a sparkling crescent moon propped in one corner, as Glamour’s Samantha Barry did upon arrival. The “celestial” experience is to run through Feb. 2, with a new decor and activations unveiled every two months.
There’s an exit into the retail store, which stocks zodiac gifts, stickers and postcards as mementos. Setting the sage aside, von Furstenberg toted a camera through the crowd and snapped photos of guests next to their birth signs. Revelers include Fran Lebowitz, Andy Cohen, Sofia Sanchez de Betak and magician David Blaine.

Catherine Deneuve Stars in Roger Vivier Short

CATS: To celebrate the launch of his Très Vivier shoe, fledgling Roger Vivier creative director Gherardo Felloni tapped none other than Catherine Deneuve to star in a short film launching today on the brand’s web site and social media channels.
Deneuve has a long history with the brand, since sporting the original version of the buckle pump in Luis Buñuel’s 1967 movie “Belle de Jour,” but this is the first time she has collaborated on a project with the house.
The short is titled “Duo des Chats,” or “Cat Duo” in English, and is inspired by Gioachino Rossini’s performance piece “Duet for Two Cats.” In it, two meowing opera singing twins end up having a full-on cat fight over a pair of Très Vivier pumps held in the lap of their mother, played by an exasperated looking Deneuve, who is taking in the performance in her grand Parisian home. In the end, she relents and gifts them both a pair.
“The idea of Catherine Deneuve gifting two young girls a pair of Roger Vivier shoes is deeply symbolic for me, it represents a passing down, from one generation to the next,” said Felloni, who said that working with Deneuve was a little intimidating.

Miami Dance Production Stars an Avatar

DANCE OF THE AVATAR: Bart Hess, the Dutch designer who took slime to new heights for Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” video and album artwork, has pulled off another trick. His futuristic costumes for “Sleeping Beauty Dreams,” a digitally enhanced contemporary ballet that premieres Dec. 7 in Miami, may cause young men to actually want to accompany their mothers. But they won’t be there for the classic fairy tale’s mushy love story or principal dancers Diana Vishneva and Marcelo Gomes in the roles of Princess Aurora and Prince Peter. Their eyes will be fixated on Vishneva’s real-time avatar projected on a giant screen backdrop, which Miami-based production company Magical Reality Group believes is the first time the live technology has been applied to a dance performance.
“I saw a rehearsal, and it’s so amazing to watch her avatar also drinking coffee on breaks,” said Hess, who incorporated about a dozen sensors into Vishneva’s formfitting suit in a reflective, foil fabric inspired by fish scales. “This technology is used a lot in film and video games but not live dance. Being a ballet, it’s even more unique.”
Hess, who’s also worked with fashion designers like Iris Van Herpen and Walter Van Beirendonck, researches

Fashion Group International’s 2018 Honorees for the Night of Stars

Superstar — Vera Wang
Vera Wang’s name is nearly synonymous with all things bridal, but her body of work is much more than that.
And this year’s Superstar award winner has experienced different sides of the industry that others may have only observed secondhand. Her Sarah Lawrence years included a semester abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris and culminated with a degree in art history. That appreciation for art is evident in her collections and her homes. An accomplished figure skater, Wang hung up her skates professionally to take her first job at Vogue magazine, where she remained for 15 years before joining Ralph Lauren as design director for accessories.
A few years later, as she was nearing 40, her father “really pushed the agenda,” encouraging her to start her own company, a decision that she wasn’t gunning to do at that time, Wang has said. “I remember the day I signed my lease for my Madison Avenue store, I had such a feeling of dread and fear of failure. My father was downright fanatical about this. He was a businessman. He said, ‘Bridal’s a good business. There will always be brides, and it’s something you can control. You’ll be working just a

FGI ‘Night of Stars’ Honorees Line Up Presenters With Their Nearest and Dearest

HOMEGROWN ENVELOPE OPENERS: With Fashion Group International’s “Night of Stars” just a few weeks away, winners are lining up their presenters, and several are keeping things local.
Superstar honoree Vera Wang is going with her nearest and dearest, the one-two punch of Donna Karan and Calvin Klein. Guests at the Oct. 25 event at Cipriani’s Wall Street will find the usual galaxy of fashion designers in the crowd.
Fashion Star winner Olivier Rousteing is still mulling over his choices. That’s also the case with Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, the creative team behind Opening Ceremony and Kenzo. Another Fashion winner, Anna Sui, will have her favorite designer, Marc Jacobs, do the honors at the podium.
Luxury Lifestyle winner Moncler needs more time to ruminate. That is not the case with Beauty Star honoree Frederic Malle, who has recruited Barneys New York’s Daniella Vitale as her presenter.
While Humanitarian Award winner Barbara Bradley Baekgaard for Vera Bradley and Design Technology victor Billie Whitehouse for Wearable X are in the need-more-time category, Sustainability award winner Maria Cornejo will pick up her prize from “Avengers” actor and fellow environmentalist Mark Ruffalo.
Media Award winner Vanessa Friedman of The New York Times has lined up The Gray Lady’s big
