Scary Chic: Jeremy Scott Shows Monster Moschino Collection at Universal Studios Hollywood

In the era of fashion-as-entertainment, it’s amazing it took this long for a designer to stage a full-fledged runway extravaganza at an actual Hollywood studio.
Jeremy Scott did just that Friday night in Los Angeles, bringing a monster of a Moschino Resort collection to Universal Studios’ eerily blissful suburban Americana stand-in used for “Leave it To Beaver,” “The Munsters” and “Desperate Housewives.”
It was the culmination of a lifelong dream for the designer, who has ambitions to make a film of his own one day a la Tom Ford, and remembered the first time he visited Universal Studios from Kansas City at age 13 in typical aw-shucks fashion: “We stayed at the Sheraton. I was with my family, and I told the other people in the hot tub I was going to be a famous star one day…I didn’t really think I was going to be a fashion star.”
The show was scripted from the moment guests entered the gate of the studio, hallowed ground for Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg – and for Hollywood’s most prolific costume designer, Edith Head. With a short video of Scott as tour guide, guests took the backlot tour trams, rolling past sets for “Psycho” and “Jaws” and

Ones to Watch: System Studios

PARIS — It is System Studios’ first time on the Paris Fashion Week schedule, but the brand has been present in the French capital for quite some time. The South Korean ready-to-wear brand’s men’s and women’s collection can be found at Parisian concept-store Tom Greyhound, where its performance led the brand to start thinking about exposing its designs to an international audience.
“System Studios has become one of the three best-selling brands in the store, after Off-White and Loewe,” said David Kang, who heads the Paris division of Handsome Corp., the South Korean company owning both System and Tom Greyhound.
Tom Greyhound is System Studio’s only point of sale outside of Asia; it counts 100 retailers in South Korea alone. “We’ve had a lot of positive comments from our Parisian clients about the brand,” continued Kang. “It confirmed our wish to launch internationally.”
Inspired by Seoul’s distinctive street style, System Studios was launched in 1990 for women’s wear and 2008 for men’s wear. The brand’s international design teams — 47 people for women’s, 36 for men’s — are based in Seoul.
Based on the concept of mix and match, classical pieces, like a tailored jacket or a striped shirt, are modernized with more streetwear-inspired

Acne Studios Taps Cindy Crawford for Fall Campaign

ICON TO ICON: Acne Studios is no stranger to making creative leaps: having featured Juliette Lewis in its spring campaign, the Swedish brand has tapped Cindy Crawford to star in its fall ads.
The model teamed with a fellow American, photographer Sam Abell, to shoot the images in front of the Cadillac Ranch installation in Amarillo, Tx., created in 1974 by the art group Ant Farm. Abell is best known for his Marlboro Man images in the Seventies, which have been famously re-appropriated by Richard Prince.
Crawford posted the first two images of the campaign on her Instagram account on Tuesday. Acne Studios creative director Jonny Johansson said he wanted to explore fashion’s obsession with icons.

“I wanted to play with living iconography, so we commissioned Sam Abell to photograph Cindy Crawford at the Cadillac Ranch. It is the iconography of Cindy, America, and also Acne Studios, with Cindy wearing new versions of the first ever jeans we designed,” he said in a statement.
The 1996 and 1997 jeans models have been reintroduced as part of the fall collection of the brand’s denim line, known as Blå Konst. The 1997 is a five-pocket rigid jean with high rise and regular

Acne Studios RTW Spring 2019

From Coco Chanel to Christian Lacroix, designers’ penchant for designing costumes for ballet goes way back.
Acne Studios’ Jonny Johansson, for his part, when approached by a young choreographer after attending one of his dance productions at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm, politely declined when asked to collaborate on a project.
But the designer, while mulling it over, said he started doing some research and “couldn’t get it out of my system.” He processed it here for spring, presenting his take on “the life of a dancer” in four acts. “I didn’t do what I would have done for [the choreographer], but I did do things that I found on the way,” he said backstage.
The collection was one of his strongest yet. Johansson filtered the dance theme through the Seventies mood he’s been exploring of late, with the peak-collared shirts, crafty crochet trims, and weird palette clashing pale green, rust, red and toffee.
Movement was the connecting thread. The designer sent out extralong, skinny pants in a pleated fabric that gathered at the ankles like legwarmers. Minimalist leather pants and trousers with paper-bag waists were worn with leotards, while long-sleeved jersey dresses and seamless knitted bodysuits went under sheer slipdresses.

Acne Studios to Open Second Store in Los Angeles

Amid denials of reports touting a potential sale, Acne Studios is chugging along with its global retail expansion plans.
On Friday, the 21-year-old Stockholm-based brand will open its newest store in West Hollywood, its second Los Angeles location following its downtown L.A. opening in 2013.
The 2,700-square-foot store at 8920 Melrose Avenue, down the street from Maxfield and James Perse, and around the corner from Hedi Slimane’s design studio and Jenni Kayne, is the company’s 54th location worldwide.

“L.A. is one of the most vibrant and creative cities in the world. We keep coming back to the city for inspiration and for the special atmosphere. Downtown L.A. was a great starting point for us, but we always knew we wanted a store on the westside also. Anyone who has ever been stuck in L.A. traffic will understand why. Store scouting is always about the combination of space and location, and in 8920 Melrose Avenue we were lucky enough to find what we were looking for on both parameters. We love the mood of this store,” said Mattias Magnusson, Acne’s chief executive officer.
As a niche yet relatively mature company, Acne can afford to think outside the box. “The retail

Loot Box Debate Raged Inside Hi-Rez Studios – Report

The Paladins Cards Unbound update back in November was a controversial one, to say the least. It made major changes to the way the game’s stat-boosting cards are obtained and used, angering many of its players — and according to one source within developer Hi-Rez Studios (who reached out to me under the condition that they remain anonymous), the update was just as controversial within the studio as well. Hi-Rez COO Todd Harris confirmed to IGN that this claim has truth to it, but also said that the studio is ultimately confident in the decision that was made.

Acne Studios RTW Fall 2018

Jonny Johansson dedicated the collection to a bunch of his music friends who recently moved outside of Stockholm — a place far, far away from the fashion scene — “to gain some creativity.”
Worked in weird, muted colors, the vagabond-hippie silhouettes looked as though they’d been cobbled together from the wardrobe of an abandoned country house, including the fancy coats in faded florals tied with shoelaces.
There was also the feeling of coming down from an acid trip in the countryside with, poking out from under the coats, flares in polka dots and tacky Seventies florals, worn with thick mohair socks and slipper sneakers with a molded rubber tongue inspired by doormats.
“We can’t have heels if we’re not in the city, and it needs to be easy, so I turned them into slippers basically,” said the designer.
The handmade rainbow knits were equally cute among a range of great outerwear options checked blanket coats, oversized trenchcoats with raglan sleeves and snap closures, and a rusty wool coat with panels of fake fur.
Sheer black slips in floral embroideries were layered over dresses in old school wallpaper prints. Long T-shirt dresses in irregular frayed pleats worn with superfine long-sleeve mohair sweaters and long knitted scarves

Acne Studios Resort 2018

For anyone wondering whatever happened to Veruschka, the 78-year-old model still gives great face — and astounding derrière — as witnessed by her appearance in the look book for Acne’s resort collection.
“This is a collection of Acne Studios archetypes, iconic and real, so I wanted to work with an icon for the shoot,” said Acne creative director Jonny Johansson.
“We asked Veruschka to choose her favorites from the collection, and it was amazing to have this supersonic woman work with such spontaneity,” he added.
Rather than work top-to-toe archetypal looks, as Vetements did last season, Johansson went for a pick-and-mix approach, throwing in items including a boxy cropped denim jacket with exaggerated sleeves, an asymmetrically buttoned plaid blazer and an embroidered Cuban shirt.
He added a quirky touch with bodysuits and leggings featuring a wood print, and off-kilter accessories such as elbow-length suede gloves and Moroccan-style pointy slippers. Message: powerful personalities only need apply.

I Love LA Self-Guided Tour Series: Classic Studios & Old-Time Movie and TV Locations

I Love LA Self-Guided Tour Series: Classic Studios & Old-Time Movie and TV Locations

This guide was compiled from my own research, trying to find actual filming locations from major classic movies and TV shows. As a tour guide, I wanted to be able to drive people past some of the most recognizable (and unrecognizable) landmarks from their favorite shows and movies. This list, for the most part, is classic TV and movies. Much of the production done in Los Angeles now is actually not done here, it’s done in Vancouver and overseas. But for those who like the old stuff, you will enjoy driving around and catching a glimpse of some of the places on this list. This is not intended to be a comprehensive guide, I don’t go into a great deal of detail, it’s intended for those short on time to see a few things that may be of interest. The topics are listed in alphabetical order. The beauty of this guide is that you can do bits and pieces of it, and spread it out over several days, or you can try to squeeze everything in during a day. It can be done, but it will be more fun if you can linger a bit, and dream about what it must have been like to live in Los Angeles during Hollywood’s heyday. Or, you can concentrate on just what interests you. Many of these locations are not in Los Angeles, or Hollywood proper. Therefore, you really need a car to see any of these places. I recommend using a GPS too, as roads change all the time and me giving directions is pointless. Keep in mind, Los Angeles didn’t get its reputation for bad traffic from nowhere, so allow plenty of time to get where you want to go, relax, and have fun! It is important to note that Los Angeles changes constantly. Some of the buildings that were visible at the time of this publication may not be available in a week, or a month, things change. Also, some of the venues are no longer, so you will have to use a bit of imagination. I have tried to jot down some of my personal advice or recollections on some of the sites, and I know you’ll have your own. The list includes famous movie studios (so

Mae Whitman doesn’t want to Tinker with the way Disneytoon Studios has been running its “Fairies” film franchise

It was early 2008 when Mae Whitman got this mysterious call from her voiceover agent, Melissa.

“She was telling me that Disney had this very important project but that they wouldn’t tell Melissa what it actually was. All she knew that that they were eager for me to come in and audition for this part,” Whitman recalled during a 2012 interview.

So Mae went in for this audition. Where — once she got in front of that mic– Whitman discovered that she was just supposed to read a couple of very vaguely-written lines. There were nothing on these pages that gave Mae any information about the character that she was supposed to be voicing. Even stranger, the guys behind the glass in the recording booth were being very tight-lipped as well.

“I got none of the guidance that you typically get in a voiceover recording session. ‘Could you please say that line again only faster?,’ ‘Could you make your character sound more excited or happier?’ They just sat back and listened,” Whitman continued. “And since I’ve been doing voiceover work since I was five, which is why I’m very comfortable in a recording booth … Well, I just decided to be myself. Read those lines in my normal speaking voice.”

Ah, but what Mae didn’t know was that this wasn’t just any audition. After announcing back in June of 2006 that Brittany Murphy was going to be the official voice of Tinker Bell for a new series of Disney Fairies home premieres, Disneytoon Studios had now decided to go another way with this character. And the reason that they’d called Whitman in was that they were now considering her as someone who could possibly voice Peter Pan’s pixie pal.

“From what we’ve already seen of Tinker Bell in Disney’s 1953 animated feature, we knew that this character was curious. That she’s fun. She’s feisty. She’s super-loyal to Peter. Not to mention able to get angry. So we really needed to find a voice that could capture all of those emotions that we already knew about Tinker Bell without her even speaking,” explained Peggy Holmes, the director of Secret of the Wings & the soon-to-be-released The Pirate Fairy. “So we needed to find an actress that could portray that range of emotions. And Mae Whitman — thankfully — had that range. She can work onstage. She can work on film. She can work on television. And she can work in voiceover. And it’s all that experience that gave her the depth that we need for this iconic character.”

2014-03-31-Mae1.jpg

And when Whitman found out that she was being offered the opportunity to voice Tinker Bell, she freaked.

“Now you have to understand that — when I was growing up — Peter Pan was my favorite Disney movie. So to now be part of the team that gets to go back to Never Land and have all these new adventures with characters that I’ve loved since childhood … Well, it’s honestly like a dream come true,” Mae enthused. “So for me, this job is definitely filled with love.”

Mind you, at this point, Whitman now has six Disney Fairies films & TV specials under her belt. And having spent all that time in Pixie Hollow, has the pixie dust now begun to fade for her?

“To be honestly, no,” Mae stated. “What’s great about the people at Disneytoon Studios is that — with each of these projects — they’ve then built out the world of Pixie Hollow bit by bit. With each film, they’ve brought in new characters. Better yet, they’ve allowed Tinker Bell and her friends to change and grow.”

“I mean, in the first Disney Fairies film, Tinker Bell didn’t even want to be a tinker. She wanted to change her talent. But at this point in the Disney Fairies film series, Tink is hugely proud of being a tinker fairy. She wouldn’t change her talent for anything in the world,” Whitman said. “That’s what I love about working on this series. The lessons carry over from movie to movie. More to the point, Tinker Bell herself changes from film & film. She’s always changing and growing.”

And speaking of growing … After spending the past five projects exploring this one teeny tiny corner of Never Land, the folks at Disneytoon Studios have decided to use The Pirate Fairy as an excuse to finally leave Pixie Hollow and go off & explore more of the island.

“The initial idea was to do a road trip adventure with Tinker Bell and her friends and this adventure dealt with a rogue fairy who was experimenting with pixie dust,” explained Jeffrey M. Howard, the screenwriter on “The Pirate Fairy.” “But once we had the idea of putting pirates into this ‘Disney Fairies’ film … Well, it only seemed natural to include the most famous Never Land pirate of all, Captain Hook.”

2014-03-31-Mae2.jpg

Now do keep in mind that this is a far younger version of James Bartholomew Hook than we saw in Disney’s 1953 version of Peter Pan. But the story team at Disneytoon Studios actually turned this to their advantage by making The Pirate Fairy the very first time this Disney Villain fought using a hook or got chomped in the butt by Tic Toc the crocodile. And if you sit through the credits of this Disney Fairies film, you actually get to see that fateful moment where Hook first meets Mr. Smee.

And for someone like Mae Witman, who’s been a Peter Pan fan for as long as she can remember, doing voicework on a film where Tink and her friends actually visit Skull Rock and then do battle on a flying pirate ship that’s being powered by pixie dust … Well, you just know that this has to be a thrill.

“I just love that I get to be a part of this legacy at Disney,” Whitman admitted. “I mean, back in September of 2012, I got to be part of this D23 event which honored 75 years of Feature Animation. Which was where I was supposed to be paneling with Margaret Kerry — who was the live-action model for this character back in the early 1950s — and Ginny Mack — who Walt personally chose as the face model for Tinker Bell.”

“Now I’m backstage with Peggy Holmes, waiting to go. And just then it hits me that I’m now actually part of this Disney legacy. That I’m now one of the women who’s been entrusted with keeping the character of Tinker Bell alive & magical,” Mae remembered. “And I got so emotionally overwhelmed at that moment that Peggy actually had to walk me around for a little while and calm me down a little.”

“I just hope that — 60 years from now — when Disney’s putting together panels to promote the new holographic Tinker Bell movies that they’ll be making then that I’ll look as good as Margaret & Ginny did at that D23 presentation,” Whitman laughed.
