How Manuel Mendez Came to Style One of the Most Famous Kids in the World

Manuel Mendez is known to plan as many as 90 outfits at a time, all of which are for one very famous seven-year-old. Much like her contemporary North West, Blue Ivy, the eldest daughter of Beyoncé and Jay Z, has made headlines in recent years for establishing herself as a young fashionista. Last year she wore a custom Valery Kovalska tuxedo pantsuit to the Grammy Awards and a Billie Blush dress in Jay Z’s “Family Feud” video. In July, she appeared in the video for “Spirit” from Disney’s “The Lion King” remake, in which she wore a custom purple tulle dress by Microwave and matching Alejandro Collection top. Mendez is the fashion force behind these looks and others Blue has worn, as WWD confirmed last year, and has been quietly styling the young celebrity since before she was even born. He began his career with the Carters nearly a decade ago as Beyoncé’s personal assistant. In 2011, when the famed singer became pregnant with Blue, Mendez was tasked with keeping stock of and organizing the many gifts that poured in for the expecting mother. Eventually, that job turned into shopping for the newborn. “There were things I couldn’t find and couldn’t get, and

Fila to Introduce Explore Collection, Blending Sports and Style

Fila is heading to the mountains, the woods and the canyons for its newest collection. The company has created Explore, a limited-edition assortment of footwear, apparel and accessories for men and women that will have a soft launch at ComplexCon in Chicago this weekend.
To support the launch, Fila will open experiential pop-up stores in SoHo in New York, in Los Angeles and in several other cities around the world on July 26.
The genesis of the collection dates to 1978 when mountaineer, adventurer and explorer Reinhold Messner was the first to summit Mount Everest without the aid of supplemental oxygen dressed in high-tech Fila gear.
While Explore is inspired by this feat and the brand’s outdoor heritage in skiing, hiking and trekking, the collection is “not so literal, but is more fashion-driven,” according to Louis W. Colon 3rd, Fila North America’s vice president of heritage and trend. So it’s better suited to hanging out at a festival than hiking the Appalachian Trail.
He said many customers still think of Fila as a tennis or basketball brand, but it has a rich history in other outdoor sports as well and the new collection is intended “to get customers to explore the brand more. There are tons

Remembering Style Icon Carolyn Bessette Kennedy

Twenty years after her tragic death on July 16, 1999, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy remains one of the most admired — and referenced — style icons of the Nineties.
The wife of the late John F. Kennedy Jr. and onetime director of public relations at Calvin Klein Inc., Bessette Kennedy cemented her fashion icon status with her minimalist, sophisticated aesthetic with sleek black dresses and casual button-down shirts that many consider as a signifier of Nineties’ style.
Bessette Kennedy’s style lives on today — especially on social media. On Instagram alone, there are dozens of fan accounts dedicated to unearthing long-lost photos of Bessette Kennedy’s fashion looks. Jack Sehnert, who founded the account @carolynbessette, which has 30,000 followers, explained the fascination with the late fashion icon.
“I started this account four years ago as a place to create a modern homage to all that her name instantly conjures,” said Sehnert, who has a day job as design director of handbags and accessories at Steve Madden. “In the years since her death, her name has almost become an adjective to describe an entire way of dressing, be it bridal or off-duty casual. I simply wanted to keep the conversation going in a positive and fun

Meghan Markle’s Maternity Style: A Study of the Duchess of Sussex’s Pregnancy Fashion

Since announcing her pregnancy in October, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has parlayed her new royal style into regal maternity style. From royal tours in Australia and Fiji — and most recently Morocco — the Duchess has evolved her look wearing both American and Canadian designers, as well as British fashion brands throughout her pregnancy.
Kicking off her pregnancy with a tour of Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Tonga with Prince Harry in November 2018, the world — not to mention social media, which has birthed a slew of fan accounts dedicated to all-things Meghan style — tuned in to see how the Duchess of Sussex would dress her burgeoning baby bump. The world tour saw Markle opting for classic pieces, like a Martin Grant beige trenchcoat and knee-length A-line dresses from brands like Club Monaco, Karen Gee and Brandon Maxwell.

Markle has stayed on the simpler side when it comes to her style, choosing pattern-less frocks primarily in neutrals and blue tones. The Duchess has experimented with more subdued prints, like a green and white striped Martin Grant dress in Australia and a red and purple

For Anna Dello Russo, Street Style Is a ‘Job’

FASHION TOME: The first floor of Parisian concept store Montaigne Market was packed with students and visitors on Thursday for a book signing by Italian fashion editor Anna Dello Russo.
The journalist, creative consultant for Vogue Japan and brand ambassador for Istituto Marangoni started her afternoon by presenting her “AdR Book: Beyond Fashion” to students at the Paris branch of the fashion school, before heading over to Montaigne Market to sign copies.
The book, which was published in 2018, documents the fashion editor’s 30-year career in the form of box set with a pop-up book, pictures of some of her greatest looks, excerpt from her diaries, a scrapbook and a set of stickers.

“Phaidon approached me after I auctioned my clothes at Christie’s in February 2018: I had taken pictures of all my looks and we decided to turn it into a magic box, which reflected my approach of fashion better than a regular book,” said Dello Russo. “It’s an experience: it’s at times fun, at others serious, you can touch and play with it. It’s fashion explained to the kids, like a video game.”

Trunk Club Seeks to Answer Style Questions

When it comes to style, Americans need the most help figuring out how to define “smart casual.”
That was the takeaway from a recent survey conducted by Trunk Club. The personalized styling service for men and women studied more than 400 search engine queries about style as well as 200-plus general style questions in all 50 states. The term is smart casual topped the list in 21 states.
Lisey Barela, head of styling for Trunk Club at its headquarters in Chicago, offered this explanation to customers: “Where casual meets formal, you will find the smart casual dress code. Use your best judgment depending on the location and event, and don’t be afraid to incorporate your personality into the look. For ladies at the office, this might mean denim with a pump and a structured jacket. For men at work, consider adding a sweater on top of your button-down shirt paired with dark denim and a brown boot.”
Tied for second place among consumers were searches for “professional” and “trendy” styles, which came up on top in seven states. That was followed by “bohemian” and “vintage” with four states each.
Leggings turned out to be a question mark for shoppers in Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine,

Bridget Foley’s Diary: Salon Style

It seems there’s barely a topic in American life that can’t wend in short order toward Donald Trump. But the presence of glass exhibitors at The Salon: Art + Design, which opened Thursday night at the Park Avenue Armory? Yes, even that.
Jill Bokor is the executive director of the show, which typically opens on the Thursday after Election Day. (Thursday’s opening benefited the Dia Art Foundation.) Over a recent coffee at the Americano, Bokor recounted what she calls “the misery of two years ago,” when the shock of Trump’s presidential win was still very new and, for many, very raw.
On that opening evening, attendees found their focus diverted from shopping. “They wanted to look, they wanted to see each other and they wanted to sob,” Bokor recalled, though she added a quick inclusivity caveat: “I mean, there were probably people there who’d voted for Trump.”
The following Saturday, typically the event’s biggest day, traffic woes generated by anti-Trump demonstrations caused a dip in show traffic, which caused a dip in sales, and crappy sales led some vendors to drop out. That left Bokor challenged “to make lemonade out of lemons.” Or at least to procure highfalutin vessels for lemonade, because at that

Roland Mouret’s Debut Book Is a Meditation on Style, and Growing Up

LIVING IT UP: “I didn’t want a retrospective or a museum show. That can all happen when I’m dead,” said a vibrant Roland Mouret, who’s set to release his first book “Provoke, Attract, Seduce” on Nov. 6 (Rizzoli).
“Twenty years have gone by. I just wanted to consider what I’ve done, look at the clothes again and try to understand them — and my creative DNA,” said the designer from his town house, showroom and shop on Carlos Place in Mayfair.
The coffee-table book was created with Mouret’s longtime collaborator, Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou, the fashion stylist and editor of 10 Magazine, and the writer Alex Fury. In it, Mouret talks about his childhood growing up in Lourdes, France, as a butcher’s son, his early career as a model and move into fashion design, his love of women’s bodies and approach to design.
He looked into his archives and reshot all of the old looks as if they were new, working with photographers including Vanina Sorrenti, Alessio Bolzoni and Cedric Buchet. There are images of his pre-collections in there, too, along with arty collages by Brian Burn and a shoot called “Butcher’s Apron” by Tierney Gearon.
“The butcher’s apron was really the start of everything,” Mouret says in the

Lauren Conrad Shares Her Fall Denim Tips and the Jeans Style You Probably Won’t See Her in Again

With fall right around the corner, there’s no better time to refresh your denim collection — and let’s just say that shopping for the perfect pair of jeans isn’t always the easiest process. There’s so much to consider – wash, affordability, comfort, style, fit — the list goes on. So, to ease the pain and help with this often challenging task, we’ve partnered with Lauren Conrad, who recently launched her newly redesigned collection of LC Lauren Conrad denim for Kohl’s, to share her tips.

“Denim is always going to be a staple in everyone’s closet. That’s what makes finding the right pair so important,” says Conrad.

And no one-in-one-out policy here! “If you find a really good pair, it’s okay to hold onto them,” she says.

In the exclusive video below, Conrad reveals she owns about 20 pairs of jeans — and much more. Watch to find out her denim confessions:

Go-To Daytime Denim Look:

When hanging and working from home, she likes to pair high-waisted skinnies with a t-shirt and flats. To dress the same style up, she suggests adding a heel and flowy top.

For a causal, yet dressy date-night look, Conrad suggests pairing a darker wash jean with fancier, more upscale pieces to dress it up the denim. And adding a sexy little heel is also a fun way to dress up the look she adds.

What to Look for When Shopping for a Distressed Jean

When it comes to rips and tears, Conrad says “You don’t want to get irresponsible with it.” But she loves the laid-back look. “Light destruction is great.”

One Denim Style She’d Never Wear Again

When it comes to a jeans style the designer won’t wear again, she hesitates to say, “Who even knows because all styles come back”, but as of now she’s swearing off the cuffed capri style. (Hey, Laguna Beach days!)

3 Denim Styles Everyone Should Have in Their Closet

When it comes to must-own denim styles, the designer recommends looking for different washes, because certain colors are appropriate for different settings. For something really casual, she suggests a distressed pair or something very lightweight and for something in-between, look for a lighter wash with little distressing. When looking for a for jean that you can really dress up or down, she suggests a darker wash that’s very clean so you could even wear them to work!

CEO Talks: Ba&sh Takes French-Girl Style to New Territories

PARIS — Will global fascination with French girl style ever let up?
It would seem not. French contemporary brand Ba&sh is steaming ahead with its international push, fueled by the ongoing appeal of feminine looks from France, along with a burgeoning demand for affordable luxury clothing in Asia and North America, according to Pierre-Arnaud Grenade, the firm’s chief executive officer.
Ba&sh belongs to a new generation of digitally savvy labels that have cropped up in the country in recent years and are garnering considerable attention — and financial backing — for their fast pace of growth. General Atlantic recently invested in Sézane, French fund Experience Capital Markets is financing the expansion of Soeur and Sessun, and the Chinese owner of SMCP brands Sandro and Maje listed the company on the Paris stock market last year with an eye to international expansion.
With the support of high-profile fund L Catterton, backed by luxury baron Bernard Arnault, Ba&sh aims to triple sales in three years. The label was founded by a pair of entrepreneurs, Barbara Boccara and Sharon Krief, who sought to offer clothing suited for women like them — young, working and intent on remaining stylish, but without excess effort.
The label has been sold in Neiman Marcus for
