British Toddler at Center of Legal Battle Dies After Being Taken Off Life Support: ‘Heartbroken’

Alfie Evans, the 23-month-old terminally ill British boy at the center of a headline-making legal battle, has died just five days after he was taken off life support, his parents announced.

“Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30 am,” wrote his mother Kate James, 20, on Facebook early Saturday. “We are heartbroken. Thank you everyone for all your support 💙

His father, 21-year-old Thomas Evans, also wrote on Facebook, “My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings at 02:30 😥😢😥😢😥 absolutely heartbroken💔😭 I LOVE YOU MY GUY💙💙💙👨‍👦👨‍👦.”

Alfie initially survived in the days after medical staff at Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital cut off his life assistance, Evans said. Alfie continued to live despite being in a “semi-vegetative state” as a result of a mystery degenerative neurological condition, surprising doctors who said further attempts to treat the boy would be futile, according to the BBC. Alfie initially survived on his own for six hours on Monday before doctors provided the child with oxygen and hydration.

“We wish to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Alfie’s family at this extremely distressing time,” Alder Hey Children’s Hospital said in a statement. “All of us feel deeply for Alfie, Kate, Tom and his whole family and our thoughts are with them. This has been a devastating journey for them and we would ask that their privacy and the privacy of staff at Alder Hey is respected.”

The hospital also announced a makeshift memorial for the boy.

“We feel sure people will wish to place tributes to Alfie along with messages of support for Kate and Tom,” Alder Hey Hospital said. “To ensure there is sufficient space for these and to ensure the safety of all those who wish to visit, we have secured a suitable place in Springfield Park situated next to Alder Hey Hospital. This is on the advice of Merseyside Police.”

Evans and James have been in a lengthy battle to keep the ailing toddler on life support. Alfie has been at the hospital since December 2016.

However, a series of court rulings sided with doctors who said there was no hope for the boy, according to the Washington Post. The BBC reported that doctors argued that keeping Alfie on a ventilator would be “futile,” “unkind and inhumane.” Most recently, the European Court of Human Rights rejected the parents’ request to keep doctors at the Liverpool hospital from taking Alfie off of the assistance.

“I faught (sic) hard in court for my son because I know what’s right!!” the grieving father wrote in a Facebook post after the court’s decision. “And look where we are now my son is still ALIVE AFTER OVER 10 horrendous scary heartbreaking hours.”

The human rights court’s decision upheld that of Britain’s Supreme Court, in which justices said it would be pointless to take Alfie to Rome for treatment.

Still, the head of the Vatican’s Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital said the Italian defense ministry had a plane ready and waiting to take Alfie to Italy for treatment if the additional Tuesday hearing grants the family’s appeal, according to the Associated Press.

On Monday, Pope Francis even voiced his support for Alfie.

“Moved by the prayers and immense solidarity shown little Alfie Evans, I renew my appeal that the suffering of his parents may be heard and that their desire to seek new forms of treatment may be granted,” the Pope tweeted.

In a fundraiser for Alfie, the family wrote that he was born “healthy and on time” in May 2016. However, the parents soon noticed Alfie was not accomplishing common milestones like lifting his head, maintaining eye contact and eating with his hands, according to the Just Giving fundraising page. Doctors initially believed the boy was simply a “late developer,” but became concerned when he began experiencing spasms and developed an infection.

The situation is similar to that of another London couple, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, whose son, Charlie, died in July after a lengthy court battle to treat the terminally ill 11-month-old baby. Earlier this year, Takesha Thomas and Lanre Haastrup lost their son, Isaiah, after a judge ruled that doctors could stop providing intensive care treatment to the boy who suffered brain damage.

Pregnant Kylie Jenner Covers Love Magazine in a Photo Taken by Kendall Jenner

Kylie Jenner has been keeping out of the spotlight the last few months, but she’s closing out the year with one final magazine cover.

The 20-year-old pregnant star, who’s having her first child, a girl, with boyfriend Travis Scott next year, has been suspiciously absent from social media, recent episodes of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and even the famous KarJenner family Christmas card this year. But Instead of addressing her pregnancy like older sister Khloé Kardashian finally did last week, Jenner unveiled her new cover of Love Magazine’s Spring/Summer 2018 issue on Christmas Day.

Jenner remained covered up in the close up cover photo — which was shot by model sister and budding photographer Kendall Jenner — wearing a cozy red turtleneck sweater and a matching bright red lip (perhaps the Mary Jo K lip kit from Kylie Cosmetics?).

In the issue, which celebrates powerful women of 2018, Jenner talks to her mom Kris Jenner about her growing empire.

“I was just trying to keep up with myself. All businesses, every company, makes little mistakes here and there. Growing it in front of so many people all of a sudden was kind of hard,” Jenner said.

The makeup mogul’s proud mom shared the cover on Instagram too saying, “Kendall!!! I’m blown away you shot this gorgeous picture of your sister for Love Magazine!!! You look stunning Kylie!!!! So proud of you both ❤.”

While the rest of the KarJenner family shared plenty of videos and photos from their Christmas Eve and Christmas Day celebrations, Jenner kept a much lower profile and only appeared briefly on Khloé’s Snapchat on Christmas morning before sharing her magazine cover.

“Merry Christmas! People think you weren’t there last night,” pregnant Khloé said to Kylie (referring to the family’s annual Christmas Eve bash) in one video as the younger sister replied: “I was.”

“She’s a secret little bunny,” Khloé added.

A source previously explained to PEOPLE in October that Kylie wants to keep a low profile throughout her pregnancy.

“She doesn’t want to be photographed. At the moment, she wants more privacy,” the source said. “She has family and friends come to her house instead so she has company. She’s very excited about the baby, though. She talks about the baby nonstop.”

Suffice it to say, Cathy was none too happy with Joe’s pigskin addiction.

Why Interstellar Should Be Taken Seriously — Very Seriously

A few of my closest friends are physicists. In fact, when I went to see Interstellar, I made sure one of them was at my side. My physicist pal and I loved the movie, and to us (especially the physicist) the physics of the story were merely a layman’s version of the real thing, but that was the right way to do it. A third member of our viewing party, a girl whose interests could be described as more spiritual than scientific (not that the two are mutually exclusive), utterly despised it. What I couldn’t figure out, despite her attempts to explain, was why. I kept coming back to the conclusion that it was because she didn’t understand it, but the reality is that plenty of people — very intelligent people — don’t fully understand the physics behind Interstellar, but its ratings would suggest that they don’t mind the confusion.

The truth, though, is that she just wasn’t interested.

Many people just aren’t interested in space.

Too many.

NASA accounts for only 0.58 percent of our annual budget, yet the average American believes we are spending too much on space exploration and research. Compare that with the only 37 percent of Americans who believe that our $ 1.2-trillion annual defense budget is too high.

To those who have seen the movie, the condition of our planet during that film seems like a realistic preview of the disasters that climate change will bring, and spending more money on our military isn’t going to stop those disasters. In fact, a larger military is more likely to lead to the deadly wars described in the movie and add to the carbon buildup that is almost exclusively responsible for climate change. Climate change is here and will only get worse over our lifetime. Widespread natural disasters, famine, and probably wars will all soon be part of the reality of our survival on this planet unless we do something just as drastic as the Armageddon that we’ve caused.

Is NASA going to save us by taking us all to a different planet? Not likely, though colonizing other planets actually isn’t entirely outside the realm of possibility, especially with Mars and Europa literally on the horizon. But what most people don’t realize about NASA is how many incredible inventions have emerged as mere byproducts of their space-faring missions — like microwaves and duct tape.

After talking to a few people about the movie, it occurred to me that not only do many people not fully understand the physics of space travel, but they hold the physics portrayed in the movie to be closer to fantasy than to science. This is indubitably not the case. Interstellar is one of the most scientifically accurate science-fiction movies ever made. To those who doubt my authority, the producers of Interstellar hired a physicist from Cal Tech to check and double-check their physics throughout the movie.

Interstellar is not just a movie but a warning, one that should be taken very seriously. The Dust Bowl-esque apocalypse that is portrayed in the movie puts climate change in a perspective that even its diehard deniers can understand, and the social statement of portraying NASA as a secret organization under a society that believes the Moon landing was faked highlights how foolish our public opinion on space spending is. We need to fund NASA more, not less. With $ 1.2 trillion for just one year, NASA could put colonies on the Moon, Mars, and Europa in our lifetimes, and we’d get to reap the benefits of every piece of technology that is yielded as a result.

Better battery technology, solar technology, nuclear fusion, quantum-entangled communication and processing, artificial intelligence, cryogenic sleep, medical advancement, and many more breakthroughs we can’t even imagine — this is just a taste of what we could have in our lifetime if we funded NASA just a little bit more than we do today. The full $ 1.2 trillion is not even necessary. Ask most scientists and they’ll tell you that we are trapped by the paradox of our own economy. We have the intellectual and physical resources necessary to solve climate change, global hunger, and most disease and travel anywhere in the Solar System we want, but we don’t have the economic resources. The reason this is a paradox is that the economy is entirely man-made. In essence, we are needlessly restricting our own progress, but that is just the way our world works right now. So fund NASA! We are only now beginning to realize the trouble we are in when we should be desperately searching for solutions. Funding NASA will bring not only the necessary advancements that could save our planet but advancements that will improve the quality of life for everyone (again, like microwaves).

The one shining light, despite the lack of public space funding, is SpaceX. Opinions on the merits of space exploration turning into a private industry are mixed, but the social benefits are still present. The company’s founder, Elon Musk, announced that SpaceX would be designing a fleet of low-orbit satellites to bring wi-fi to the entire planet. Take that promise as a taste of the real-world benefits of funding modern space travel beyond just saving our lives. Who wouldn’t want worldwide free wifi?!

Fund NASA, invest in SpaceX, write your congressperson, and vote. Space travel isn’t just cool. It isn’t just something to do because we can. If Interstellar has anything to teach us, it’s that space travel can save our species. The truth is we might need saving very soon.

Tim McGraw Slaps Fan During Atlanta Concert, Woman Gets Taken Away By Security

Tim McGraw had an unusual, and uncomfortable, encounter with a fan at an Atlanta show last weekend. According to TMZ, while performing his song “Truck Yeah” at Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood on Sunday, July 13, McGraw slapped a female fan who got a little too handsy and aggressive.

In the video above (TMZ has another version of it as well), McGraw is seen standing in a sea of screaming fans with his ripped jeans, black tank top and signature cowboy hat. At about 44 seconds in, after bending down to sing with the crowd, McGraw tries to keep on walking when something holds him back. A moment later, security rushes over.

According to TMZ, a woman grabbed on to McGraw’s leg and ripped his jeans. In the video, he is visibly upset, gesturing “What the what” with his hands, before carrying on with the show. The woman was indeed taken away by security.

HuffPost has reached out to McGraw’s reps for comment and will update this story once one comes through. The singer hasn’t addressed the incident on Twitter, instead posting the following photo at the end of the night:

McGraw is hardly the first musician whose fans have gotten a little too close for comfort.

Back in February, a fan rushed up the stage as Taylor Swift performed in London’s O2 Arena. He was escorted off by security. Beyonce was pulled off stage by an overly excited fan in September 2013, during a concert in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Wiz Khalifa had a similar encounter in October 2013, when a shirtless man got up on stage while he performed in Florida. The man was immediately tackled by security.

Kim Kardashian Stalker Taken Into Custody After Appearing At Mother’s Home: Reports

A man who claimed to be Kim Kardashian’s boyfriend was found outside the home of the reality TV star’s mother, Kris Jenner, according to reports.

“The man claimed he had been invited to visit the Hidden Hills resident, so he drove out from Arizona,” a sheriff’s department statement cited by the Los Angeles Times said. “Deputies described the man as disheveled and said he talked to himself during their contact.”

Kardashian, fiancé Kanye West and their baby daughter North have been staying at the Jenner residence while their own home is being built.

TMZ reported that the alleged suspect may have claimed to have been the boyfriend of Kardashian’s younger half-sister, Kendall Jenner, and that he also said he was Justin Bieber’s stepbrother.

The website says the man allegedly made it onto the property and even managed to peek in the windows.

The suspect has been taken to a hospital and placed under a psychiatric hold, the Times reported.

“Non-Stop” Is No “Taken”

Movie Review Jackie K Cooper
“Non-Stop” (Universal Pictures)

Liam Neeson’s rise to action hero status began in earnest with “Taken.” In that film he was a father doing everything necessary to protect his daughter. In his latest film “Non-Stop” he is also a father but everything he does is to protect a plane full of strangers. It isn’t personal and that is just one of the flaws of the film. All of the action moments are there but the heart isn’t.

Neeson plays Bill Marks, a Federal Air Marshall on a trans-Atlantic flight. As soon as he boards the flight and it has taken off, he begins to receive messages on his phone that someone is going to be killed every twenty minutes. He is told to have a certain amount of money wired to a certain account in order to stop the killing.

Now that sounds like an excellent premise for an action packed film, but it isn’t. For one thing the supposed hero is too flawed. Marks is an Air Marshall with a troubled past. So troubled it is highly doubtful he would have ever been allowed to keep his job, or even get hired in the first place. Having him so flawed is the first strike in the lack of credibility of the movie.

Next there is the explanation at the end of the film as to who is the bad guy and why. This is pure mumbo-jumbo in the worst way. A lot of words are used to explain what created the situation on the aircraft but the person telling the story might just as well have been spouting gibberish. It just doesn’t wash and ends the film on a bad note.

Then there is the acting. This movie has Neeson singing lead and Julianne Moore, Michelle Dockery and Lupita Nyong’o singing backup. Not one of these women is crucial to the movie’s plot. They are just there to dance around Neeson and react while he acts. This is a major waste of talent. Moore is a former Academy Award nominee, while Nyong’o is a current nominee. Dockery is the star of the hit television series “Downton Abbey.”

Neeson is still interesting in a grungy sort of way, but this time out he doesn’t manage to get inside the head or the heart of his character. You are rooting for him most of the time but not with the same enthusiasm you have had in other movies.

The film is rated PG-13 for profanity and violence.

“Non-Stop” looked to be a film as exciting as “Taken” was, but in the end it isn’t. Neeson doesn’t connect; the plot doesn’t gel; and all three actresses might just as well have taken another flight. Oh well, there is always “Taken 3.”

I scored “Non-Stop” an airborne 5 out of 10.
