The Outside View: How Tech Has Robbed Photographers of Power and Given it to Influencers

My daughter recently turned 12 and as part of the celebrations we watched R.J. Cutler’s 2009 documentary, “The September Issue.” Not exactly a typical choice for a coming-of-age film but still one that threw past and present into stark contrast.
As the documentary unfolded, it dawned on me just how much publishing and technology have moved on in the last nine years. None of the staff at Vogue was seen using smartphones. I tried to imagine watching it through my daughter’s eyes.
In one scene, Anna Wintour is waiting to view potential cover shots of Sienna Miller by Mario Testino. The team must wait to download large files, then print off the images from the shoot. Although the technology was already there, it was clunky and slow in comparison to today. We were looking at what is fast becoming history: Analogue fashion photography.
In less than a decade, the arrival of the smartphone and its high-tech capabilities has completely revolutionized photography and publishing. Nine years ago, Vogue was a fashion authority. Today, Instagram is. The hashtag Fashion Week has 15 million posts attached to it, #AW18 has 533,000 and counting.
We’re also sharing more photos than ever, 350 million per day on Facebook alone. Where

Deputy AG Rosenstein calls on Big Tech to protect users

Deputy AG Rosenstein calls on Big Tech to protect usersDeputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein says tech companies need to keep consumers safe, while also providing a way for police to break through their systems’ encryptions. Technology companies need to stop putting profits and growth over the safety and security of their customers. “Technology is advancing at a speed and volume that exceeds the capacity of most people to comprehend the accompanying risks, let alone to protect against them,” Rosenstein said in his speech.

Former GQ Staffer, Tech Start-up Founder and Creative Director to Unveil Seam

Justin Hruska, a sneaker collector with a background in tech, wasn’t satisfied with his online shopping experience. Oftentimes he would visit larger e-commerce sites and feel shortchanged because he knew he wasn’t seeing everything a brand had to offer, which meant he had to visit other sites to find what he was looking for.
“A lot of brands use wholesale for awareness and put their best-selling products on their own site,” said Hruska. “So the consumer has to jump through all these hoops before they can purchase a $ 300 sweatshirt. With Seam, we want to reimagine what that looks like.”
Seam is a men’s and women’s shopping app set to launch this summer that was cofounded by Hruska, the chief executive officer, and Jake Woolf, the editorial director. Nate Brown, who cofounded Studio Institute, a creative firm that’s worked with artists including Beyoncé and Jay Z on tour visuals, is a partner and a strategic adviser who worked helped design the app.
Similar to Farfetch, Seam will serve as a marketplace, but instead of partnering with boutiques, Seam works directly with brands and designers and the app will mirror the product available on their e-commerce sites. Woolf said because Seam holds no inventory

New York Fashion Tech Lab Inks Accenture Deal for 2018 Partnership

New York Fashion Tech Lab has signed on Accenture as a partner for the 2018 program.
Springboard Enterprises founded NYFT Lab in 2013 with the support of retailers and fashion brands to help grow women-led emerging tech companies at the intersection of fashion, retail and technology. The company this year completed its fourth annual accelerator program. There’s some funding for the program from Springboard and the Partnership Fund for New York City, but most of the funding is from within the industry. That allows industry sponsors to learn about new tech ideas and work as mentors to further develop the ideas that they are most interested in.
Senior managing director at Accenture Jill Standish, who leads the company’s Retail Industry practice globally, said that with retailers and brands being disrupted by online “pure plays,” she sees Accenture’s role as partner with NYFT Lab to help the 2018 class participants more quickly accelerate their innovations to “better serve and connect consumers to the fashion industry.”
For the 2017 class, founding members J. Crew and Macy’s continued to participate in the program. Returning for the second year as tech partner was Microsoft. Also returning were second and third-year partners Bloomingdale’s and Kohl’s. New this year was
