Preview’s ethos is segmented into three areas — In Action, In Transit and In Recovery — which are meant to reflect the three pillars of urban life. Nike Just Does It: Applies Footwear Technology to Apparel

Nike today is launching the Fe/Nom bra, the first apparel product to use Flyknit technology, which until now has been reserved for footwear.
“We’re going to apply the benefits across Nike apparel,” said Nicole Rendone, senior bra innovation designer at Nike. “We’ll continue to expand bras and all apparel, including leggings and socks. Flyknit could be used in anything. We think it’s huge. This is only the beginning.”
The new bra offers flexibility, breathability and conforms to the body in the same way that  Flyknit conforms exactly to the shape of a foot.
“This changes everything for us and for women,” said Rendone.  Asked why Nike chose a bra for its first Flyknit apparel product, Rendone said, “It’s an essential item. We felt the bra had the ultimate benefit and the largest challenge. We also thought the bra was the most exciting place to start.”
Nike Flyknit, which bowed at the 2012 London Summer Olympics with the Nike Flyknit Racer, is a digitally-engineered knitting process used in lightweight, formfitting and virtually seamless shoe uppers. The technology is used in Nike sport footwear including the Zoom Fearless Flyknit women’s training shoe and Kevin Durant’s signature Nike KD10.

Gemfields Partners With Gübelin Gem Lab on New Emerald Traceability Technology

SPYING GAME: Gemfields, a supplier of responsibly sourced colored gemstones, has teamed with Gübelin Gem Lab, which specializes in the analysis of precious gemstones, to develop a new technology that traces the origins of emeralds in an effort to increase transparency in the colored gemstone industry.
The new traceability technology, called Emerald Paternity Test, works by applying DNA-based nanoparticles on rough emeralds from the mining stage. They can then be decoded at any stage in the supply chain to identify an emerald stone’s exact place of provenance. The nanoparticles have been designed to survive all the processes a stone undergoes, from cleaning to polishing and setting, to ensure they are always retrievable.
Gübelin Gem Lab highlighted that by using these tiny particles — smaller than 100 nanometers — they are able to ensure that the appearance and properties of the stone are not affected in any way.
“This technology offers all stakeholders along the entire supply chain, from the miner to the final customers, proof of the exact source of emeralds, instilling confidence and creating trust. It enables a new level of transparency for the gemstone trade,” said Daniel Nyfeler, Gübelin Gem Lab managing director.
Nyfeler said he was drawn to Gemfields’ forward-thinking approach

Advanced Metasearch Engine Technology

Advanced Metasearch Engine Technology

Among the search tools currently on the Web, search engines are the most well known thanks to the popularity of major search engines such as Google and Yahoo . While extremely successful, these major search engines do have serious limitations. This book introduces large-scale metasearch engine technology, which has the potential to overcome the limitations of the major search engines. Essentially, a metasearch engine is a search system that supports unified access to multiple existing search engines by passing the queries it receives to its component search engines and aggregating the returned results into a single ranked list. A large-scale metasearch engine has thousands or more component search engines. While metasearch engines were initially motivated by their ability to combine the search coverage of multiple search engines, there are also other benefits such as the potential to obtain better and fresher results and to reach the Deep Web.The following major components of large-scale metasearch engines will be discussed in detail in this book: search engine selection, search engine incorporation, and result merging. Highly scalable and automated solutions for these components are emphasized. The authors make a strong case for the viability of the large-scale metasearch engine technology as a competitive technology for Web search.Table of Contents: Introduction / Metasearch Engine Architecture / Search Engine Selection / Search Engine Incorporation / Result Merging / Summary and Future Research

Technology and Psychological Well-being

Technology and Psychological Well-being

In the modern world we are surrounded by technology. Gadgets such as cell phones, portable computers, and electronic diaries accompany us throughout the day. But is this a good thing? Are we being served by these technological wonders, or have we become enslaved by them? Does constant availability via technology make us more efficient or more stressed? Is our ability to connect with others all over the world, day or night, making us more sociable or turning us into recluses in a virtual world? This book considers the impact of technology on the different spheres of our life – work, home, family and leisure – and assesses ways in which to build better communication between technology developers and society to ensure that technology enhances our lives and psychological well-being, rather than damaging them.

Tommy Bahama Using 37.5 Technology for New Product Offering

Tommy Bahama is introducing a new category of product for Father’s Day and has turned to Cocona 37.5 Technology to power it.
The technology uses active particles to capture and release moisture vapor to maintain optimum temperature and relative humidity in the body. This results in better maintaining an ideal core temperature while increasing comfort and enhancing performance.
Up until now, the vast majority of the products that have used 37.5 technology have been activewear or outerwear brands. But Tommy Bahama has created a yarn that blends silk and 37.5 and will introduce it in its camp shirts.
Bradley O’Brien, executive vice president of design and product development for the Seattle-based manufacturer, said Island Zone was “largely driven by 37.5. We believe that adding technology in our iconic products is a whole new way to get someone to buy something new.”
While the concept will launch with camp shirts, Tommy Bahama will offer Island Zone polos for holiday and shorts, which will blend 37.5 yarns with cotton, for spring 2017.
“We’re building a whole lifestyle of product around it,” she said.
In addition to the 37.5 product, Tommy Bahama will also offer hybrid board shorts, rash guards and wicking polo shirts under the Island Zone tag

Content: Selected Essays on Technology, Creativity, Copyright, and the Future of the Future

Hailed by Bruce Sterling as "a political activist, gizmo freak, junk collector, programmer, entrepreneur, and all-around Renaissance geek," the Internet’s favorite high-tech culture maven is celebrated with the first collection of his infamous articles, essays, and polemics. Irreverently championing free speech and universal access to information–even if it’s just a free download of the newest Britney Spears MP3–he leads off with a mutinous talk given at Microsoft on digital rights management, insisting that they stop treating their customers as criminals. Readers will discover how America chose Happy Meal toys over copyright, why Facebook is taking a faceplant, how the Internet is basically just a giant Xerox machine, why Wikipedia is a poor cousin of "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy," and how to enjoy free e-books. Practicing what he preaches, all of the author’s books, including this one, are simultaneously released in print and on the Internet under Creative Commons licenses that encourage their reuse and sharing. He argues persuasively that this practice has considerably increased his sales by enlisting readers to promote his work. Accessible to geeks and nontechies alike, this is a timely collection from an author who effortlessly surfs the zeitgeist while always generating his own wave.

Aereo Cleared To Auction TV Streaming Technology In Bankruptcy Deal

(Reuters) – A bankruptcy court has allowed defunct video streaming company Aereo Inc to auction its TV streaming technology assets, according to court papers published on Friday.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan ruled on Wednesday that Aereo could sell its assets, after the company reached an agreement with broadcasters over the sale process.

These broadcasters include CBS Corp, Comcast Corp’s NBC, Walt Disney Co’s ABC and Twenty-First Century Fox Inc’s Fox.

Under the agreement, Aereo will allow the broadcasters to attend the auction of the assets and provide them a weekly update on the status of the sale process.

Aereo filed for bankruptcy in November, five months after the U.S. Supreme Court said it violated broadcasters’ copyrights by capturing live and recorded programs on miniature antennas and transmitting them to subscribers for $ 8-$ 12 a month.

That decision effectively closed down New York-based Aereo, whose business model was to offer a less-expensive alternative to cable television.

The case is In re: Aereo Inc, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No. 14-13200.

Modern Ferrite Technology

Modern Ferrite Technology

For the past seventy years, ferrites (magnetic ceramics) have been prized for a range of properties that has no equivalent in the existing metal magnetic materials. They have contributed to many important advances in electronics and new high-performance products are appearing all the time. Ferrite technology has produced greater progress in the past 15 years since the first edition was published. Many of the semiconductor and IC technology responsible for the computer and Internet explosion would not have been possible without the magnetic materials technology needed for powering and otherwise exploiting those developments. ‘Modern Ferrite Technology, 2nd Ed’ offers the readers an expert overview of the latest ferrite advances as well as their applications in electronic components. This volume develops the interplay among material properties, component specification and device requirements using ferrites. Throughout, emphasis is placed on practical technological concerns as opposed to mathematical and physical aspects of the subject. The book traces the origin of the magnetic effect in ferrites from the level of the simplest particle and the increases the scope to the larger and larger hierarchies. From the desired magnetic properties the author deduces the physical and chemical material parameters, taking into consideration major chemistry, impurity levels, ceramic microstructures and grain boundary effects. He then discusses the processing conditions and associated conditions required for implementation. In addition to conventional ceramic techniques, he describes non-conventional methods such as coprecipitation, co-spray roasting and single crystal growth. The second section of this book deals with a complete listing of the many important applications in the field including ferrites for permanent magnet, telecommunications, power supplies, memory systems magnetic recording and microwave applications. The function of ferrites in each of these applications is des.
