It’s Equal Pay Day! 5 Easy Tips for Women to Negotiate the Salary They Deserve – According to Catt Sadler

In the past year, women across the country have joined forces to protest unequal pay in the workplace, from minimum-wage workers to blockbuster stars including Jennifer Lawrence. And perhaps no one has protested that wage gap more publicly than Catt Sadler, who inadvertently became the face of the movement when she quit her job at E! after discovering she was making half the salary of her male co-host.

So who better to raise awareness of Equal Pay Day – April 10, which is as far into this year  the average woman has to work to make what her male counterpart made in 2017 – than Sadler, who is teaming up with Luna Bar and AAUW to highlight the wage gap and offer solutions (including salary negotiation workshops hosted around the country, among other tools).  The star, who’s currently working on a docuseries about the topic with Lawrence, shared five easy tips for salary negotiation that she’s learned since becoming an activist for the cause.

1. Don’t rely on the company to make the best offer.

No one is more committed to your success than you, so you need to be prepared to be your own best advocate right out of the gate – don’t wait until you’ve “proven yourself” or trust that they’ll raise your compensation once you’ve put in time. “I would encourage people to start the day they step into the workforce,” Sadler says. “You often trust in your employer or the company in which you have dedicated more than a decade, like I did. I really just trusted the process, but that’s not enough. I wish I would have known to ask more, sooner. If you enter the workforce making more from the get go then you are not playing catch-up; for me I think it was just a little too late. At the end of the day we were just never going to get there.”

2. Do your research to find out what salary is fair, and write that number down ahead of time.

“I think a lot of women get the job offer and already the employer has dictated the ballpark range of what you can potentially make,” Sadler says. “A tip that surprised me was, you put down the number first. That requires doing some research, finding out what other women with similar experience in a similar position with the same expertise as you might be making – but you can gain a lot from that starting point being a little bit higher.”

3. Be ready to ask tough questions.

Because money is still a taboo topic, it can be very uncomfortable to bring up salary comps, but Sadler says it’s so important. “I think just talking at all and getting rid of this taboo notion that we are not supposed to share how much we make – I mean that’s where it all begins,” she says. “We can’t even have an argument or conversation amongst one another or say that in the workplace if people aren’t being completely transparent.”

And for women just starting out in their careers who might not have networks to tap for that information? “I think the future generations are already far more attuned to what’s going on, so I think we are growing a generation of girls from day one who just are expecting more,” she says. One way for new-to-the-workforce women to approach the topic: “Ask questions like, If I take this job, can I be sure that a male doing a similar job and contributing the same with the same education is not going to be paid more than me? These are questions that we can ask and we can expect what is fair from our employers.”

4. Bring men into the discussion as allies.

Sadler also thinks the next generation will be more attuned to wage disparity from both sides – it won’t just be a women’s issue. “When it comes to men and boys in general, the guys aren’t the problem. They aren’t the enemy; it’s the system that’s the issue. It’s the systematic way that we have done things for so long,” she says. As a mom of two young boys, she says they ask, “you have all these same contributions but this guy gets paid more only because his gender? For them it’s like, that’s not fair, that doesn’t make sense.”

5. And of course, support other women.

The star got very public support from stars including Debra Messing and Reese Witherspoon after her E! exit, and she says it’s so important to build up the women around you – which you can do by role-playing salary negotiations with friends to help them prepare and sharing salary information when you have it.

“We have to have women rally around one another, and I think we are doing that,” she said. “I’ve never been prouder to be a woman than I am today. That is the absolute truth. I mean the women that came before me, before my departure, they inspired me and I think it’s a real trickle effect. We have to keep being these champions for one another.”

Ashley Judd Shares Tips on How to Combat Sexual Harassment in Powerful PSA Video: ‘Feeling Safe Is Everything’

Ashley Judd wants to teach girls how to stand up to harassers.

In the wake of ongoing allegations of sexual misconduct against disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, Judd has teamed up with Teen Vogue in a new video to help give tips on how to combat unwanted sexual advances.

“Inappropriate and unwelcome is probably my most favorite way of disrupting harassment as it’s happening,” she opened the video, explaining how the phrase can be used against street hecklers.

In another scenario, the actress demonstrated a more physical expression of “no.” She placed her hand in front of her chest, with her palm facing the camera, looking sternly at the camera as she declared, “STOP.”

Judd was one of the first actresses to come forward and publicly accuse Weinstein of sexual misconduct — helping inspire over 50 women to do the same.

In the video, the Kiss the Girls star also recounted her own experience with the movie mogul, in which he allegedly asked her to watch him shower during a meeting in his hotel room, admitting that she was surprised in her own strength in that moment.

“I don’t know how I had the moxie to say no, no, ugh…no…no,” she said.

Judd stressed that everyone’s reaction to sexual harassment will be different — and that’s perfectly fine.

“Our bargaining strategies and things we do in these moments are normal. Anything we do in these situations is really OK,” she said. “Feeling safe is everything. That’s essentially what is taken from us when we experience sexual harassment and micro-aggressions.”

Judd also shared a series of verbal responses to uncomfortable behavior, explaining that women should trust their gut when a situation might feel off.

“You are ineffably powerful,” she said. “If it feels wrong, it is wrong. It’s really OK to say, ‘that’s wrong.’”

Judd has been outspoken about her alleged experience with Weinstein since coming forward in a New York Times article earlier this month. On Friday, the actress accepted the Truth and Power award at the Women’s Media Center Awards in New York City.

“We’ve been able to talk about how perpetrators are shameless and they put their toxic shame onto their victims and we internalize it and take it around with us,” she said during her acceptance speech. “Until we say wait a minute, that was never my shame in the first place I’m going to put it back where it belongs which is on the sexual predator.”

In response to the lengthy allegations made against Weinstein, a spokesperson for the producer said, “Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein. Mr. Weinstein has further confirmed that there were never any acts of retaliation against any women for refusing his advances.”

WHEN IN PARIS: Sunday morning, the designers at the Americans in Paris showroom on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, backed by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and Vogue, were still buzzing from Saturday night’s cocktail party co-hosted by Karlie Kloss. “It was amazing,” said Joshua Cooper, one half of design duo Rochambeau.
“Karlie Kloss was wearing one of my looks, this white skirt and a shirt dress,” said a proud Adam Selman. The designer added that the showroom had been busier this season, perhaps because March’s session had been hampered by the rain.
Cooper, meanwhile, apologized for the half-empty racks for his brand. “There’s a lot of models running around in our clothing this week, so it’s not all here,” he explained.
Other designers shared their favorite spots in Paris to check out while in town. “I did my favorite thing in Paris, which is to go vintage shopping,” said lingerie designer Morgan Lane.
The Rue de Bretagne in the Marais is her favorite place for hunting for second-hand gems, she added. “I bought an amazing earring with gold strings that drip down, and a beautiful white ruffled dress,” she added. Lane also hoped to get out to the Foire de Chatou, one

Dunham has been the target of media fascination due to her apparent recent weight loss, which stemmed from her battle with endometriosis. The chronic disorder led her to seek out trainer Tracy Anderson, who helped counsel the actress in fitness to alleviate her pain and anxiety. 

After her appearance at one of Anderson’s fitness events triggered headlines around the internet about Dunham looking “happy and healthy” with before-and-after photos, she took to social media to reiterate how she doesn’t give the “tiniest of shits what anyone else feels about my body.”

“My weight loss isn’t a triumph and it also isn’t some sign I’ve finally given in to the voices of trolls. Because my body belongs to ME ― at every phase, in every iteration, and whatever I’m doing with it,” she wrote on Instagram in March. “I refuse to celebrate these bullshit before-and-after pictures. 5 Skin Care Tips For Making Sure Your Melanin Flourishes This Spring

Spring has officially sprung!

And while many people are thinking about decluttering their space and breaking out sundresses and shorts, they may forget that their skin care regimen could use some spring cleaning, too.

Dermatologist Brooke A. Jackson, M.D., told The Huffington Post a few key things people of color should be doing to ensure our skin, our body’s largest organ, remains glowing and healthy through the seasonal changes. 

From sun protection to getting rid of discoloration, the North Carolina-based doctor has five necessary tips that keep your melanin on fleek this spring and summer.

1. Lighten up your routine

Just as you change your wardrobe, you should change your products. Put away the jars of heavy body butters and creams, and opt for something lighter, Jackson advises.

You start wearing shorts and T-shirts and so you should do the same with your products,” she said. “So generally we recommend in the winter time, you use a big jar of something you actually scoop. And in the spring and the summer, you can go a little bit lighter with something that has a little bit more lotion; like Vaseline Cocoa Radiant is a good choice because you still get the moisturizing effect because it’s got the micro droplets of Vaseline jelly and 100 percent pure cocoa butter in it but it’s not quite as heavy as some other jar products are.” 

 

2. Stay moisturized

We tend to do more activities that can dry out our skin in the summer, like going to the beach or taking a dip in the pool. Jackson told HuffPost that it’s important to moisturize afterward, especially after being exposed to chlorine, which is “very, very drying.”

In addition to lathering up in the morning, she said swimmers should rinse all of the saltwater or pool water off and use lotion. Jackson said this doesn’t just apply to people who swim but people with certain skin conditions as well. 

“Generally, I would say you should moisturize once to twice a day depending on what’s going on with you,” she said. “Certainly, if somebody has drier skin or if they’ve got eczema, they probably need a little bit more moisture and so two full moisturizing processes a day would be great … A lot of people during the spring and summer will probably do just fine with the once coming out of the shower in the morning.”

3. Go with your own glow

Despite the widespread myth, black people do need sunscreen. Jackson said this idea probably stemmed from people of color historically being excluded from certain medical research. 

“Historically we focused on sunburn and a direct correlation between sunburn and skin cancer and so therefore [the message was only] our fair-skinned counterparts get it,” she said. “That message has been loud and clear for many, many years but [there’s an assumption that] people who have darker skin tend not to burn.”

If you’re going to chase the sun, protect yourself, she said.

“I think it’s really important to make sure that we are all sun protecting ourselves because it is not out of the realm of possibilities that skin cancer will develop,” Jackson explained. “So going with your own glow, not actively seeking tanning at the beach or just going out for a run, just making sure that you’re sun protected.”

It also doesn’t hurt that sunscreen can help get rid of discoloration.

4. Remember less is more

One product that locks and seals moisture is better (and more practical) than a cabinet full of products that you hardly use. Jackson said people should pick a product that can do multiple things for you and stick to it. 

“Keep your regimen simple,” she said. 

5. When all else fails, see a doctor

Dermatologists have the answers specific to your skin that your favorite YouTube vlogger may not have. Jackson said many of the skin problems people of color face (discoloration, hyperpigmentation, etc.) can only be healed by getting to the root of the issue.

“I have a lot of patients who try everything under the kitchen sink and then with their girlfriends and everything on the internet and they don’t make an appointment with a dermatologist who can help them out in 10 minutes or less,” Jackson said. “Discoloration is a huge issue with skin of color and we get discoloration from any inflammatory condition, acne, eczema, etc., so again, a reason to make sure that you’re getting the treatment that you need to make sure that that is controlled is because 9 times out of 10, the number one complaint of patients with skin color is I want an even complexion and I want this discoloration to go away.”

Jackson also said since black dermatologists aren’t accessible to everyone, it’s important for people with melanin to ask if their dermatologist knows how to treat darker skin.

What words of wisdom do you have for people who are going through grief or hardship? Thank you for the tenderness of this question. Here are a few, I hope helpful thoughts.

First, you are not alone, even though every one puts their best face forward on social media and even in human interactions, everyone knows about loss. There is a huge benefit in the element of faith, in a God who is good all the time and present to my losses.

Second, simplify. We get overwhelmed by the complexity of our losses, all the questions, and are tempted to start ‘future tripping’ – imagining a future that is dominated by loss and things never change. It is not real but seems real to us. Simplify and reduce the world to only today and stay inside the grace of this one day. Tomorrow you will get grace for whatever it actually holds and not what you have imagined.

Third, let people in. We are not designed to try and make our way alone through loss. Healing comes through community and relationship.

Fourth, be willing to let the loss go. This is a cost that some are not willing to pay. The loss becomes an identity and sometimes a prison that we begin to call a sanctuary.

Fifth, but (in light of the last suggestion), grieve and lament well. Throw the apples against the barn door with all your might and scream. Don’t suppress the presence of the wounds of loss. The way out is in and through.

If you’ve ever tripped over the cord of your straightening iron — guilty as charged — or found yourself in an Airbnb with plugs in the weirdest spots, you’ll get why this might be valuable IRL too, glam squad or no glam squad.

2. If you have bangs, prep them first.

If you have blunt bangs like Lea Michele’s — a.k.a. the kind you can’t just sweep to the side — you need to start with them first. “When styling bangs, you have to do it right out of the shower,” says hairstylist Sarah Potempa, who counts Michele (and Victoria’s Secret Angels) among her clients. She suggests first working a little bit of mousse through damp, towel-dried bangs. Then lightly blow-dry them, aiming the nozzle of your hair-dryer downward and combing them with a brush like the Sarah Potempa Mini On Set Brush ($ 23). Then pin them to one side with a silver clip (layering a tissue between the clip and your hair to prevent a crease). After a few minutes, pull them to the other side and pin them again. “This gives your bangs the perfect amount of movement and natural bend,” explains Potempa. Noted.

3. Use hairspray before and after you curl your hair.

We didn’t think we could love anything more than Gina Rodriguez‘s edgy undercut this summer. We were wrong. Before he started to work on those waves, Joico celebrity hairstylist Paul Norton took one-inch sections of Rodriguez’s hair and sprayed each with Joico JoiShape Shaping & Finishing Spray ($ 17). “This gives her hair an extra ‘shape-ability’ so it adheres to what the curling iron gives you,” he explains. Doing this step before you heat-style makes it easier to create neat, even waves. You could spray it on afterward too, but it’ll only give your style staying power. More on that here.

4. Try hair wax (instead of styling creams) to hold down awkward pokey-out-y pieces.

We love an intricate (and Instagrammable) braid as much as the next girl, but Gadot’s twisted ponytail was a refreshing change. Two things are key to making it work: Twisting each of the two sections of the ponytail in the same direction, which forces them to coil around and prevents them from untwisting, and keeping the rest of the hair sleek. For the latter, Suave Professionals celebrity stylist Jenny Cho dabbed a strong styling wax near Gadot’s hairline and worked her way back. “I decided to use a soft wax instead of a cream because it has a stronger hold,” says Cho. “If you have layers and don’t want them poking out, it’s a better choice for control than cream.”

5. Add volume at the crown to make a stiff updo look softer.

Witherspoon is America’s sweetheart — and, like we said, she’s not exactly one to go for a dramatic, edgy look. A chignon is a classic, of course, but her hairstylist Adir Abergel added some unexpected drama with a deep side part and volume at the crown. “It creates a really beautiful modern shape,” he explains. “The height creates a more elegant shape to the updo.” He sprayed Virtue Create Finale Shaping Spray ($ 36), out next month, at the roots before combing the top to create a smooth, shiny finish.

6. Learn the “dotting” method.

When we think Blake Lively, we think sleek updos or glam waves, so this loose, textured look was out of the ordinary (in the best way). Once her hair had dried, Rod Ortega, who styled her hair using L’Oréal Paris, actually spritzed L’Oréal Paris Hair Expert Extraordinary Clay Dry Shampoo ($ 7) — which is intended for your roots — in dots onto the layers framing her face before working his way toward the back of her hair.

“A dry shampoo allows me to easily restructure her hair without it becoming too saturated,” explains Ortega. “The dot technique helps control the amount of product.” If he piles on too much, he risks her hair falling flat. (Although from what we can tell, Lively’s hair is immune to that.) It essentially adds texture and lift without weighing hair down.

3 Silicon Valley-Tested Tips For Introvert Networking

In the Silicon Valley, many senior leaders are introverted—in fact, many more than in most other industries we’ve studied in our research of over 200 C-Suite Executives. There are some great lessons that we can learn about introverts from the Valley.

Rajeev Behera has worked in the Silicon Valley for the past seven years, running marketing teams in various start-ups. He now heads up Reflektive, a communication platform that enables employees to send and receive continual, real-time feedback. He provided me with three key tips for introverts to shine bright next to their louder, extroverted peers.

Focus on manager one-on-ones

One of the most important goals introverted employees need to keep in mind is to be intentional about having one-on-ones with their managers. Extroverts, as natural talkers, are comfortable discussing what they’re working on, what their goals are, and what progress they’ve made. Because they speak so freely, openly, and with such ease, peers and managers often hear of their progress and productivity at work. Extroverts’ more expressive nature can make silent introverts appear less productive.

What Behera suggests, then, is to play to one of the strengths of introverts—that of having deeper, more detailed conversations. People with quieter presences should intentionally converse daily with their managers, even for five minutes, to update them. Because introverts are not always talking, it’s important for them to set aside time to consciously inform and update their supervisors on their progress. This not only enables introverts to properly share their insights but also forms strong relationships. For introverts, it’s often easier to speak up one-on-one than in front of peers, so this tactic also gives them the opportunity to gain visibility in the eyes of their managers.

Behera put it well: “That’s probably the biggest key: letting them know how insightful you are and being very clear about what you’re doing in those one-on-ones, and making sure you develop that one-on-one relationship with your manager—outside of group meetings and team meetings.”

Focus on quality, not quantity

The next point Behera makes is similar to a point often made in the discussion about introverts and networking. Networking can be perceived as daunting and uncomfortable for many introverts. Rather than work a room the same way an extrovert would (speaking to many people for little time), introverts often speak to fewer people but have longer, more detailed conversations. Those conversations easily go beyond the superficial and can lead to relationships that last several years after the event, long beyond the more typical duration of a mere follow-up e-mail.

Within a company, the same tactic can be used to foster deeper relationships among employees. Once you reach a certain level at an organization, you have a tight-knit set of peers and co-workers; still, it’s often beneficial to maintain relationships with employees within various sectors of an organization.

The same way introverts would speak to fewer people at a networking event but sustain a deeper conversation, they could establish good relationships with employees across the company. This enables introverts to be known—not superficially by everyone at the company, but in-depth by quite a few.

Focus on synthesis

A final point is that it’s always helpful to be a second ear to your boss. Behera noticed the manifestation of this stemming from the one-on-one relationships he had with some of his employees. These employees would go off to their meetings or work in peer groups, listen intently to conversations, synthesize the information they’d heard, and report back to him in a thoughtful manner.

The ability to synthesize a lot of information is a key skill of introverts. Instead of talking a lot in meetings, they listen closely and share important takeaways from the meetings with their managers later on. The level of insight this skill provides is a great quality of introverts—one they should capitalize on.

Though introverts are quiet, they can shine just as brightly as their extroverted peers. Establishing one-on-one conversations with a manager, fostering deeper relationships with fewer employees across the company, and synthesizing information are all gateways for introverts to spotlight their talents and productive efforts.

Introverts deserve to be heard, and being quiet should not get in the way of that.

Decisions suck sometimes. Many times when we’re in the midst of a difficult decision, we expect there to be a clear right and wrong choice. But there isn’t. People involved always complicate the matter further. How in the world do we navigate these situations in our day-to-day lives? Here are a few tips.

Do The Opposite Of What’s Comfortable

This will knock out the uncertainty in more than fifty percent of your decisions. It’s especially true for my life, because if I had done what felt comfortable to me, I probably would’ve never went on a cross-country road trip that changed my life.

Too many people in my hometown choose to stay comfortable. I was out at the bar the other night and saw dozens of people that I used to know from high school. They never left home I guess.

It’s hard to forsake comfort for the unknown, but I’d wager that 9 times out of 10, it’s the right way to go.

Listen To Your Friends

Making a decision is quite easy if you’re willing to listen to friends. Sometimes they might sabotage your best interests in the name of their own selfishness, however I’ve found that this doesn’t happen very often. Besides, if you choose the right friends, you won’t have to worry about this happening to you.

And how do you find the right friends? Ben Franklin once said “the same man cannot be both friend and flatterer.” Sure, find friends who are kind and fun, but also find friends who will tell you what you need to hear, even if you don’t want to hear it.

And then, most importantly, listen to them.

Fill Out The Johari Window

We all want to be happy. That’s why some decisions are hard to make, because they carry serious ramifications connected to whether we might be happy in the end. Should you ask your girlfriend to marry you? Should you take that promotion?

The Johari Window can help you with that. It looks like this.

As shown, it’s not enough to know who you are, we also have to know how others view us.

Here’s where it gets tricky though. When others know more about us than we do, it’s especially important to listen to them. However, when we know more about ourselves than our friends, then we have to trust our gut.

It’s difficult to know what our friends think of us, but to clear it up ya’ll can go through this exercise and fill out the Johari window. It’s actually quite fun to do, and when your friends know you better, they’re in a better position to give you advice.

Spend Time With A Mentor

Unlike friends, mentors are there specifically to give you guidance. There’s a level of rapport found in these relationships, sure, but mentors are supposed to judge our situations with level eyes.

I spent time with a mentor in college and he urged me to think about the man I want to be in the future. Honestly that was the first time I seriously thought about my future, and our meetings forced me to stay accountable from week to week.

Stare Into The Past

What better way to inform our current decisions than to look at our past ones? Ponder similar situations you’ve gone through, if you can. Think about those involved, your goals at the time, the success you saw, and the obstacles you overcame. Apply anything you can to your current decision.

Take Emotion Out Of It

Human beings make way too many decisions based on emotion. If some people buy a dog, or get married because of an oncoming rush of emotion, then it’s entirely logical to assume that we make many other decisions based on our emotions as well.

Some things might feel right in the moment, but in reality that feeling only lasts for a little while, and can deceive us into doing things that aren’t good for us in the long run.

Listen To Yourself

We’ve gone through a variety of tips. In your life, doing all of these exercises will illuminate the proper response about 90 percent of the time for you.

But if you’re anything like me, you like doing things your way. Making the right decision is a weird mixture of listening to others while also turning inward to look at your soul. At the end of the day, your friends could know bits and pieces, but nobody knows the whole you better than you. When you’ve gone through all of the previous exercises and still don’t have a clue of what to do, simply do the most exciting option.

If you made the wrong choice, you can always revert back to another route. You don’t need to make the best decision every time, and with every decision you make, you find out more about yourself in the end.

5 Tips to Feel Up on Down Days

Let’s face it–some days are better than others.

Our very bad day might be due to our health, our work, or even the weather, but having a difficult day is still a fact. And how we respond to those down days is extremely important.

In the past, I remember thinking that when I felt down or under the weather, there was something wrong with me. I was under the mistaken impression that I needed to feel good all the time. It felt as though that expectation created a lot of pressure in my life–until I realized that nobody could expect to be blissfully happy every day.

So I started paying attention to those down times and noticed that each time I came out of a lull, I ended up with a clearer vision and a new zest for life that I didn’t have before. Having the occasional down day turned out to be okay–it served a purpose.

The lows of life are as important as the highs. They are times of reflection, gathering information, comparing and contrasting thoughts and feelings, and refreshing our perspective. Think of it like sleeping. When you sleep, your body restores and heals itself. When you wake, you usually feel refreshed and renewed.

Having a down day? Here are some tips to help lift your spirits:

1. Listen to good music. Playwright William Congreve wrote in The Mourning Bride, “Musick has charms to soothe a savage breast,” (often misquoted as, “Music has charms to soothe the savage beast,”) and rightfully so. The calming and healing powers of music have been documented throughout the centuries.

2. Connect with someone. Go out for lunch or coffee; pick up the phone, chat, IM, text–whatever you like–just connect with a friend or family member. Sometimes just talking to someone can lift your mood, even if it’s only for a few minutes.

3. Read a book or watch a movie. Pick up a new book or re-read a favorite; leaf through one of those magazines stacked on your coffee table; or surf Netflix and find a good movie. Healthy distractions can bring quick relief on those challenging days.

4. Walk in nature. Go outside and take a nice long walk. Besides the exercise and fresh air for your body, walking can also be restorative for the mind. Allow your troubles to take a break and just enjoy moving and breathing.

5. Focus on what you have. Gratitude always brings relief, and giving thanks for what we already have is something we can do at any time, anywhere. Things could always be worse.

Life isn’t about being perfect; life is about being present. Embrace the down times. Embrace the days we don’t feel so great, for in those days, we are internally realigning ourselves with what we really want. And when we start moving back into alignment, better balance is near.

Feeling phone-verwhelmed? 5 tips to create a healthier, happier relationship with your smartphone.

Not long ago, I was chatting with a friend who lives in Oregon, USA, and she told me a story that I could completely relate to — because I’ve seen it play out in Hawaii, where I live.

My friend was having brunch at a popular local restaurant — she had waited an hour just to get a table — and while waiting for their food to arrive, she and her boyfriend noticed something troubling.

All around the restaurant — with very few exceptions — people were intensely focused on their phones. Texting. Tweeting. Posting pics of delicious food on Instagram. Scrolling through various feeds while glancing at their dining companions over the top of their screens. Multiple phones at every table. If someone wasn’t actively using their phone, they had it sitting flat on the table or tucked right in their lap — ready to grab!

“It was crazy!” my friend exclaimed. “Everyone waited so long to get inside, and once they sat down, instead of enjoying the food, the ambience, or their friends, they were totally focused on their phones. When did our society become so… phone-obsessed?”

I laughed, nodding my head. I’ve seen the exact same “scene,” too, so many times. Whether it’s at a public restaurant, a coffee shop, waiting in line at the airport or bank, or around the family dinner table, millions and millions of people are — as my friend put it — extremely “phone-obsessed.”

Sadly, this epidemic just seems to be getting worse.

In recent years, more and more parents have set up coaching sessions with me because they’re concerned about their kids’ relationship with technology.

“I can barely remember the last time I saw my teenager without a phone in her hand,” one mom said to me. “She texts so much, her phone is practically a part of her body.”

So many people — parents and kids alike — are feeling burnt out and “phone-verwhelmed.” Many of us yearn for a “simpler time” when smartphones didn’t exist — yet, at the same time, we’re grateful for the solutions and timesaving tools they provide. (GPS to help you navigate an unfamiliar neighborhood, anywhere in the world? Amazing!)

Smartphones definitely aren’t “evil” or “bad,” but people of all ages are struggling to find a “balance” and it’s becoming problematic. What’s the solution?

You’ll be happy to know: you don’t necessarily need to flush your brand new iPhone down the toilet or vow to never, ever tweet again. Things don’t have to be that black or white. But you can take specific steps to create a healthier, more balanced relationship with your phone — and all forms of technology, for that matter.

Here are 5 simple steps that I suggest:

1. Make a plan. If you want to earn a college degree, you don’t just wander through a university waltzing into various lectures and jotting down notes at random. You make a plan. You select specific classes happening at specific times and you attend them. This keeps you on track, moving steadily towards your goal.

You can apply that same logic to your smartphone usage. Choose specific times (say, 8am, 12pm, and 4pm) when you intend to “check in” to read texts, social media updates, and so on, and then do your best to stick to the plan. Try not to just “wing it.” Create phone-routines that help you to create the kind of day (and life) that you want.

2. Savor the sound of silence. If your phone is continually bleeping and pinging every time “something happens,” it’s going to be tough for you to stay focused on whatever you’re trying to do — you’ll be tempted to check in and see what’s up!

This may seem obvious, but turn off those noisy notifications. Better yet, turn the volume on your phone down to zero or power-down your phone completely.

If you’re concerned that you might miss something important — like an emergency phone call from your spouse, parent, or your child’s school — you can create a “call filter” so that certain people’s calls come through even if your phone is on “silent.” That way you can rest easy, knowing that you will never miss something that is truly urgent.

3. Make dinnertime a phone-free zone. For many couples and families, dinnertime is the only time of the day when everyone is gathered together in one place. Make dinner a special, sacred time. No phones at the table.

If people get restless or bored, strike up an interesting conversation by playing a question game (like asking, “What was the best part of your day?” or “What was the toughest part of your day?”) and take turns telling stories. Even if you’re dining alone, set your laptop or phone aside and savor your meal without techie distractions.

4. Enjoy phone-free adventures. A few times a week, try leaving your phone safely at home. Go for a phone-free walk with your dog… a phone-free date with your sweetheart… or a phone-free trip to the grocery story. When was the last time you did that?

See how it feels to move freely through the world without any kind of digital “companion” to keep you company. What kinds of feelings bubble up for you, positive or negative? Take note. No matter what kinds of feelings come up, taking some phone-free time is a valuable experience that can teach you a lot about yourself.

5. Ask yourself, “What am I craving right now?” My colleague Susan Hyatt — a fellow life coach — often poses this question to her clients. It’s a great one! When you feel the urge to check your phone, and you don’t really “need” to, pause for moment. Check in with yourself and see what you are craving.
Do you crave company? Do you want some excitement or entertainment? Inspiration? Connection with a friend? Energy to get through the rest of your day? Are you craving attention or affection? Laughter? Love?

Whatever you crave, see if you can find a non-phone-related way to give it to yourself.

Talk a walk or pop by a friend’s house just to say “hi.” Write a handwritten letter. Go for a jog. Listen to music. Sit and gaze at the sky or the ocean. Read a book. Feed your spirit in some other way.

After satisfying your cravings out in the “real world,” you may discover that whatever is going on in the “phone-world” just isn’t that compelling anymore.

There are so many ways to build a happy, balanced relationship with technology.

These 5 tips are just a few of my personal favorites.

Expert Styling Tips for Curvy Girls From Superstar Blogger Gabi Fresh

If you’re not one of the nearly 250,000 people following plus-size blogger Gabi Gregg on Instagram, you are seriously missing out. A quick scroll through her feed offers up scores of killer outfits, glimpses of her enviable girl gang, and insiders-only behind-the-scenes photos.

But before she had gazillions of followers, Gregg was just a fashion-savvy college grad who was frustrated with the lack of clothing for young (and trendy!) plus-size women. So she started talking about it. In 2008, she launched Young Fat & Fabulous a blog about her personal style journey (it was later transformed into Gabi Fresh). In just over five years Gabi Fresh is a runaway success and Gregg has become major influence in the curvy style revolution. She’s gone from reviewing collections to modeling in their look books—and this fall, she’s showing off ASOS Curve’s latest collection. (Some of our favorite looks are pictured below!)

Here, Glamour talked to the barrier-breaking blogger about the brand, her shopping tips, and why you need to work on your self-esteem before hitting the mall.

Glamour: What was it like to shoot an ASOS look book after being a fan of the brand for so many years?
Gabi Gregg: I’ve been a fan—and customer—of ASOS since they first launched their curve line about five years ago. They’re one of the places I shop the most often. I literally get ASOS packages to my door every month. I think one of the reasons the lookbook has gone so viral is because it was such a natural fit between the blogger and the brand—and that doesn’t always happen. The images came out looking editorial, like any other fashion-forward brand. It didn’t feel catalogue or commercial—the way a lot of plus-size brands tend to feel.

Glamour: How else do you think the collection stands out in a less-than-impressive plus-size market?
GG: They’re definitely pushing the envelope when it comes to fashion-forward, trend-focused plus-size clothing. They don’t just do a basic black dress, they do a cool sequin cape. We see so many brands that don’t do that in plus-sizes—even if they have trendy straight-size lines, the plus-size section is watered down. Most brands are constantly saying, “Plus-size girls don’t want that [product].” So it’s great to see a brand doing the same thing in both their divisions.

Glamour: What are your favorite pieces from the collection?
GG: I love the sequin cape, the yellow suede skirt, the fur coat, and the black dress. It’s hard to pick favorites! Overall, I was happy to how many amazing, on-trend statement pieces there are. Unfortunately, plus-size clothing is often left behind on trends. If we even get them, often times trends are a season or two late, so it was great to see that this is right on time.

Glamour: What are your other must-haves for fall?
GG: I’m really into flared jeans right now. Faux-fur coats, suede skirts and dresses, and turtlenecks are my other must-buy pieces this season.

Glamour: How often do you tailor your clothes? What are some of your signature adjustments?
GG: I encourage everyone to get their clothes tailored. Everyone fits things differently—especially when it comes to plus-sizes because everyone carries their weight differently. People don’t realize that the bloggers and celebrities they see looking amazing in clothing got it custom tailored. They think there’s something wrong with their body when, in fact, they can get the clothes changed.

The number one thing I tailor is my pants: I get the legs taken in. A lot of time, if something fits my hips and my butt it’s too baggy between the knee and the ankle, so I get them tapered. I also hem my skirts. If it’s a midi skirt, I bring the hem up from the mid-calf to hit just below the knee.

Glamour: Any other tips for getting the best fit out of your clothing?
GG: I think girls are scared to deviate from the size they usually are. When it comes to fit I try everything. I’m not against wearing clothes that aren’t my ‘size’ on the tag. If I see a dress, like a cool utility dress, I know it will look best fitting over-sized so I order it two sizes up. If I want a body-con dress to fit skin-tight, I almost always order it two sizes small. Think about how the piece should fit and adjust what size you buy accordingly.

Glamour: How can we master the art of e-shopping?
GG: I shop different sites differently and part of that is just getting used to shopping there. I know it sucks, but you have to learn how things fit and what works. Sometimes, on the same site I’ll range in size from 14 to 22 depending on the cut of the piece. My cart is always four different sizes!

I also love eBay. I search every iteration of whatever item I want. I may search ‘plus-size romper’ and then ‘romper XXL’ because it might not be tagged with plus-size. If I ever love a trend and wish it was made in my size, I go on eBay and search the trend with ‘XXL’ or ‘plus-size’ and I always get a result.

Glamour: Which style crushes of yours should everyone be following on Instagram?
GG: I love Solange Knowles (@saintrecords), Karla Deras (@karla_deras)—she’s probably my favorite—Nadia Aboulhosn (@nadiaaboulhosn), Nicolette Mason (@nicolettemason), and Amber Riley (@msamberpriley).

Glamour: What final piece of style advice do you want to give to our readers?
GG: Work on your self-esteem first—especially if you’re plus-size. Find a community and surround yourself with other women who have similar body types to you. You won’t feel like you’re ‘different’ or the odd one out. A lot of the time, that’s what’s holding people back from making that jump into fashion-forward dressing. They don’t feel confident enough or don’t feel like they look good enough. Once you work on your self-esteem and feel good in your body, you’re way more likely to shop more and have fun with clothing.

10 Smart Back-To-School Tips For Divorced Parents

Back-to-school season is stressful for all parents but it’s a little more complicated when you’re divorced: Who’s doing the annual trek to Target to load up on school supplies — and more importantly, who’s paying? Are both of you listed on important school forms? 

 To make heading back to school a little less overwhelming for you and the kiddos, we asked HuffPost Divorce bloggers and readers on Facebook to share their tried-and-true advice. Here’s what they had to say:

1. Split the cost of back-to-school supplies. 

Between backpacks, calculators, school uniforms and that extra big box of Crayola crayons, your kids’ back-to-school supplies can end up costing a small fortune. To lessen the individual burden among parents, Lynsey Mattingly and her ex divvy up purchasing responsibilities.

“My ex and I always separate who’s buying what, with him buying the backpacks, lunch boxes and water bottles while I usually get the entire supply list the teachers send home,” she told us. “It comes out to about the same price and this way we are both playing to our strengths: he gets a few quality items that he’s better at picking out and I get the specific, detailed things.”

2. Create a shared Google calendar to keep everyone in the loop. 

Each school year, Elizabeth Denham dutifully updates the families’ shared Google calendar with the kids’ upcoming school events. This way, no one misses back-to-school night or a holiday performance. 

“For all of the really important events, I send invites through the calendar as soon as I enter the date so that I don’t have to remember to do it by phone,” she said. 

3. Drop the kids off together on the first day of school. 

The first day of school can be a scary, overwhelming experience for even the most confident kiddo. If at all possible, try to free up your schedules so both of you can drop the kids off and show your support, said Leah Porritt. 

“On the first morning of school this year, we met before and walked our son to school together,” she said. “He had both of us there to send him off to first grade and I think that meant a lot to him — even if the normal school year mornings are a mixture of mom, dad, stepparents or before-and-after care. For his sake, we put differences aside and make an effort to both be present together.”  

4. And if your ex can’t be there for day one, text a pic. 

If your ex is unable to make it that first day, be generous and send him or her a pic. (You have at least 20 on your camera roll — why not share the love?) 

“Texting a pic is an act of goodwill and will be greatly appreciated,” said blogger Valerie DeLoach. “And you never know — one kind act could change the whole dynamic of your current relationship.”  

5. Let your kids’ teachers know who’s who in your blended family. 

Your family tree likely got a lot more complicated post-divorce, especially if you or your ex remarried. Early on in the school year, fill your kids’ teachers in on who’s who in your family; that way, there’s no confusion when your child’s stepdad picks her up. 

“I do it because it can be confusing for teachers to hear my son talk about his parents, stepparents and numerous siblings on either side,”said Porritt. “He’s old enough now to explain who is who, but it makes it more comfortable for him if his teacher already understands his extended and blended family situation and doesn’t need to question him!”

Another bonus of touching base with your kids’ teacher? Backpacks that are a little less heavy, said reader Carmen Poff. 

“When my ex and I tell the teachers our kids have two homes, most will send home a second set of text books so they won’t have to haul them back and forth,” she said. 

6. Attend parent-teacher conferences together. 

Heading to parent-teacher conferences as a team — like writer Carolyn Flower does every year with her kids’ dad — sends a strong message to your children and their teachers: Regardless of what happened in the past, today we’re partners who have the kids’ best interests at heart. 

“As a collaboratively divorced family, we’ve never missed a parent-teacher meeting,” Flower said. “We feel that demonstrating we are still a team shows the children and the school they are loved and supported in all they do. It plants healthy seeds for successful mindsets.” 

7. If your ex lives out of state, have him or her call into the meeting. 

Don’t let distance interfere with both parents taking a proactive, involved role, said Honorée Corder. 

“Because my ex lives in another state, when it’s time for parent-teacher conferences, we schedule a time that works for both of us so he can be conferenced in,” she said. 

8. Set times when you and your ex can debrief on your kids’ progress at school. 

To ensure that no book report or soccer meet falls through the cracks, Kasey Ferris and her ex have have scheduled communication days where they discuss and update each other on their son’s life. 

“Every Sunday and Wednesday there’s an email exchange where we discuss the week, any tests coming up and updates on projects that need to be completed,” she said. “Anything crucial or time-sensitive is handled via text, but everything else goes into a Sunday/Wednesday email. It’s created a lot of peace between us.” 

9. Don’t leave your ex’s side out of the family tree.

Regardless of how you feel about your ex, your kids still need him or her in their lives. When there’s a family tree assignment — or a photo project that calls on family photos — rise above any bitterness and include your ex’s side of the family (yes, that includes new spouses). 

“If there is a project at school that asks for family photos I always make sure that the kids try to include pictures of their mom, their mom’s partner and kids as well as my own partner and kids,” said reader Barry Fraser. 

10. Create a group chat where you discuss your kids’ wins and progress. 

Start a group chat that includes the parents and the kids and send texts whenever your kids ace an assignment or need a little encouragement to bring that C grade up. It’s a little communication trick that has worked wonders for blogger Emma Bathie and her family. 

“The idea is to direct the reminders and notes to the kids but they’re there for both parents to see and comment on if needed,” she said. “It can also be a nice way for the parents to make positive/encouraging comments about each other in front of the kids (‘Hey Matt, I really appreciate you picking up the kids for me last night when I was stuck in a meeting and then traffic. It was really helpful!’) You’re also showing the kids you can be the grown-ups they need you to be.”

Women with large breasts have likely encountered a fashion situation, where a gorgeous something just doesn’t work with their curves. “People don’t always think about the simple function that clothes have to perform on someone with a larger bust,” Reformation founder and CEO Yael Aflalo told Glamour. “In reality, a lot of times the dress needs to be fully redesigned, bringing the neckline up or down to accommodate larger cup sizes, thicker straps, and so on.”

Shop thick fabrics.
Your bra isn’t the only part of your outfit offering support. While underpinnings are vital, the garment itself can offer more holding power if it’s made out of a thicker material. Look for fabrics with some heft, like denim, brocade, and heavier-weight linen-cotton blends.

Look for wide straps.
Speaking of your bra, unless you’re in an intricately constructed garment with an interior corset, you really need to wear one (skipping is easier for women with A and B cups). As Aflalo pointed out, many designers simply size up their flimsy sundresses and tanks, keeping the skinny straps of the original. Smart design means widening the straps too so that you’re able to keep a bra out of sight.

Consider interesting necklines.
Large-chested women aren’t doomed to boring straight cuts that hit at the middle of the chest. “Interesting necklines look good on every body type,” Aflalo said. “They elongate the torso and draw the eyes upward.” Whether sexy laces, V-necks, or a dipping sweetheart, there are plenty of unique necklines that also allow for a bra.

Tailor things.
“Half the time it’s about having a good tailor on-hand,” Aflalo admitted. The custom look of having your pieces, expensive or not, fitted to your body is always important, but the magic can be especially potent if you’re busty.

As Tony Robbins says in his lecture, there’s always something you desire, something you’d like to get. It might be recognition, love from others — mostly it’s unconditional love — and you feel obliged to create something absolutely unique, otherwise it won’t work out. What’s more, you’re too far from achieving your new goal and you might well feel unable to bring it into your present. Frustration, however, uses up so much of your energy that it makes you unable to keep a clear head.

1. Change your internal communication

In order to make a change in your life, it’s enough to simply change the stories you keep telling to yourself and to others. For example, ‘I’ll never be good enough’, ‘I’ll never lose weight’ and so on. If you can change your internal communication, you can achieve anything. These things seal you off from being happy, besides they attract people into your life who only reinforce this. Is this what you need? Obviously not.

2. You get what you believe in

What do you believe in? What obstacles do you pose to yourself? Why aren’t you satisfied? The answers to these questions usually point out some emotional needs, which could be satisfied if you did something. E.g. ‘If I was successful, more people would love me’ … A more radical version of this is stating ‘It’s easy for others’ or ‘I have no opportunities’. Yes, it’s a perfect shield, but you’ll never know what you’re capable of until you ram the walls you erected. If you don’t like your boundaries, destroy them. If you don’t like not going towards your happiness or you feel that it’s too distant; figure out the way there and do everything for it to work out. You have time, you don’t have to worry. Take small steps towards the aim.

3. Let go of pressure

Release the heavy burden because it’ll just cripple you and you’ll never achieve your goal. Life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you. Yes, without control you suffer from seeing that the thing you desire will never become real, but then just let life bring whatever it has to. Believe me, you may be grateful for fate that everything happened the way it should.

If you suffer, there are two solutions at hand:
1. Thriving to improve,
2. helping others

4. Develop

However great successes you may achieve, days will come when it’s boring to be on the top of the mountain. When you know the scenery, what’s more you’re bored with it. Then, you must improve, set off and see the other mountains; how high they are and whether you can climb them. Remember, your old mountain will still be there. You have nothing to lose.

And this is the difference between being brave and cowardly: the brave ones have at least once experienced what it’s like to achieve something. From that moment on, you know nothing is impossible for you and you’ll never be afraid of anything again. You’ll fearlessly plunge into the very middle of the jungle of the surrounding mountains, knowing you’ll find a way in every situation. Don’t let your life go by focusing on becoming something or somebody. Release the burden you carry and let life shape you. Don’t say you can’t because it’ll come true. I might say I’m unable to achieve my goals I set but I’m perfectly aware of owning everything what it takes inside me to fulfill them. Whether it’ll work out or not depends exclusively on what’s inside my head and whether I’ll do my best to get there.

And when your life is at the point of seeming accomplishment and still you don’t feel happy, and your friends cast it in your face that you shouldn’t grumble while you feel desperately lonely with your little problem, always remember that the source of the problem is that you project a world you desire, a dream world, which fails to correspond to reality and it ultimately causes frustration. Let it go. Don’t feel running out of time since everything happens when it’s supposed to.

Whether you’re the bride, maid of honor, mother, or family friend, throwing a bridal shower means planning lots of little details to help create the perfect day. How big or small will the bridal shower be? Is there a theme? What is the venue? After having a bridal shower of my own, attending many of my friends’ showers, and admiring inspiration from others, I have a few tips in my book for throwing the best bridal shower. I know taking on a bridal shower can sometimes feel overwhelming — you just want it to be perfect for the bride and her friends. Just take a deep breath and start with some of these to-do’s.

Top 5 Tips to Have the Best Bridal Shower Ever:

1. Unique Bridal Shower Themes! There are so many wonderful fun and unique bridal shower themes out there. Try to keep away from being cheesy and cliché. Some of my favorite intimate shower themes are “Garden”, “DIY Craft Day,” “Spa Day,” and “Cooking School.” Let’s keep things classy and chic. Once you have settled on one, stick to it throughout the entire shower.

2. Keep it intimate! I have always found that the more guests you have, the more stressful it is. The bride-to-be will feel like she has to mingle with everyone invited and it is harder to sit back and relax before the big day. We want everyone to enjoy the day, so no need to invite your new co-worker, keep it to family and close friends.

3. Keep a light schedule! Whether you are planning a game or activity, having lunch, eating mini cupcakes, toasting the bride-to-be, or gift giving, it’s a good idea to have a rough idea what will be going on throughout the day. Know the general timeline, but don’t over pack it with too many games or activities. If guests are having a great time mingling, don’t interrupt it to start a game right on time according to your schedule. Let the event take its course naturally!

4. Consistent Décor! The most memorable bridal showers are those that look put together. It doesn’t matter whether it is a small or large detail, look at everything with a careful eye. 20 Meditation Tips for Beginners

If you’re new to meditation, then you might feel overwhelmed when trying to keep so many instructions in your head: watch your breathing, calm your mind, keep your back straight…

To take the pressure off and allow your practice to unfold more naturally, here are 20 priceless tips to help you get started. As you practice more, you’ll develop a routine and get more used to these concepts. As a guiding principle, whatever happens during your meditation session is okay. Meet your experience with kindness and gratitude, and your meditation session will be well worth it, no matter what happens.

1. Begin With Quick 5-Minute Sessions
It’s easy for beginners to get overwhelmed when trying to sustain a 20-minute-meditation. That can feel brutal in the beginning. Start out nice and easy. Begin with 5-minute sessions, and when you’re ready for more, move it up to 10 minutes.

2. Stretch or Do Yoga First
By stretching or doing yoga before you start meditating, you’ll prepare your body to sit in one position for a long time. Yoga and meditation go hand in hand. Even just rolling your neck and stretching your back beforehand can help you stay comfortable for longer.

3. Try Out a Guided Meditation
For a fun experience and to have someone guide you through your meditation, try out a guided meditation. You can find free guided meditations available on YouTube and other platforms. You might find it easier when you follow someone else’s instructions.

4. Set Your Timer
When you set a timer for your meditation, you don’t have to keep checking the clock. This removes a big distraction from your practice. Moreover, you won’t be sitting in meditation all day because you’ve forgotten to see how much time has elapsed. Set your timer so you can relax and enjoy your experience.

5. Remove Distractions
Turn off your cell phone, put it on vibrate, or leave it in the other room. You want to be in a space without distractions. I find that the best place to meditate is in my room with the door closed.

6. Don’t Try Too Hard
Meditation at its best is soothing, relaxing, and effortless. It’s merely observation; observing your breathing with your conscious awareness. So there is no real effort involved, just being consciously aware. So don’t work too hard at it.

7. Create a Daily Practice or Ritual
By meditating every day at the same time or within the same daily routine, you develop a habit that becomes easier to practice every day. If you don’t build meditation into your daily routine, you’ll find yourself forgetting to do it.

8. Get Relaxed Beforehand
You want to wear comfortable, loose clothing and be in a relaxing environment. Make sure your room is comfortable. Before you start, take a few deliberate deep breaths and stretch any part of your body that feels tense or achy.

9. Try Out Different Types of Meditation
There are dozens of techniques to meditate, such as Zen meditation, chanting meditations, mantras, and so on. Try out different types to see which one feels right for you.

10. Read “The Power of Now”
This epic book by Eckhart Tolle sheds new light on what it really means to be present. And meditation is simply the practice of being present. To me personally, “The Power of Now” is like the bible of true meditation and mindfulness.

11. Let Go of Expectations
Don’t expect enlightenment. Meditation is about noticing and observing your own sensations, thoughts, and feelings. By just allowing your experience of meditation to unfold in any way that it does, you’ll get the best experience.

12. Stay Nonjudgmental
By simply noticing things as they are — without judging them — you are being mindful. When you notice your mind labelling, commenting, and making opinions about things, you’re judging. And that’s okay when you judge too. Just notice that, and let it go.

13. Have Fun with Your Practice
Allow yourself to really enjoy your meditation session. View your repetitive or silly thoughts with humor. Laugh at your “monkey mind” as it keeps churning. Have fun with it!

14. Your Mind Will Quiet Itself
Don’t try to force your mind to stop thinking; that’ll create distress. It will stop thinking all on its own when you practice your technique, whether it’s observing your breathing or repeating a mantra.

15. Your Mind Will Wander
It’s okay when your mind wanders, that’s just what minds do! Just notice that your mind has wandered, and gently — with compassion — return your attention to your technique (observing your breathing). Don’t beat yourself up, it’s normal.

16. Find a Comfortable Posture
There are no rules that you have to sit in the lotus position. As long as I’m not feeling sleepy, I prefer to lay down. Find a position that works well for you, whether it’s sitting on a chair, cushion, or bench.

17. Your Eyes Can Be Open Or Closed
Do what feels right for you. If you keep your eyes open, you might see visual distractions. If you close your eyes, it may feel forced and unnatural while you’re awake. So do what works for you.

18. Get Up Slowly
After you finish your practice, take your time getting up. Don’t rush off to the rest of your day, as you want to stay mindful and bring your meditative state into the rest of your day’s activities.

19. Meditate With Others
Whether it’s with friends, family members, your partner, a coach, or an organization, by meditating in a group it’ll help you stay committed to the practice. Moreover, you can share your experiences afterwards. You might be surprised to hear how different their experience was.

20. Observe the Feeling Within Your Body
Notice how you feel internally, within your body. What sensations are there in your legs? Do you feel your toes and calves? Notice your diaphragm moving as you breath. This will keep you connected to your body.

Same Sex Wedding Tips for All Couples

Marriage equality is flourishing across the United States, yielding more same-sex weddings than ever before. But unlike “traditional” straight couples, same-sex couples have no templates or roadmaps to fall back on when planning their nuptials. Here I share a few ideas – some from my own experience – for navigating the unknown terrain of same-sex weddings, all of which will help any couple (gay or straight) who want to celebrate individuality over tradition.

Your Wedding Challenges are Opportunities
With no GPS to lead the way, you and your fiancé are forced to ask yourselves three important questions:
1. What are we doing?
2. Why are we doing it?
3. How do we make it happen?

Same-sex couples have always been forced to be awake at the wheel of their relationships and marriages. I feel it’s because they have had to fight for recognition in the face of adversity. So – along with straight couples who deviate from the norm – think of your wedding-planning challenges as opportunities to create meaningful celebrations on your own terms.

Incorporate Guests Into Your Story, Not the Other Way Around
Assemble a menagerie of faces that make you feel like you. And choose not to invite anyone who might compromise your event with what I call ‘Overtly Toxic Prejudice’: a reflexive, pernicious need to induce shame in those they do not understand. Anyone down with OTP does not have a place at your wedding.

By taking charge of your guest list, you also empower yourself to bring people into your world, on your terms. For instance, when family members slip up and call your event a “party,” just remind them how important the day is for you, how important the word “wedding” is, and how meaningful it will be for you to share it with them.

Remember, you are inviting them into your story as a couple, not contorting yourself to fit into theirs.

Personalize, Rewrite, or Create New Rituals
You get to think about which wedding rituals you like, which you do not, and which are rooted in the tradition of brides as property (which are many of them). You then get to decide which of those rituals, if any, tell your story. If none do, you can always create your own, and then celebrate them in your own way.

Here are some examples:

The Proposal. You can reenact a “traditional” proposal where one proposes to the other on bended knee. But you can also invent a refreshing proposal of your own. And you can cast yourself in the role of proposer, proposed to, or both.

For example, my husband and I invented Proposal Week: a mini-vacation during which we agreed to psyche each other out with almost-proposals at various dinners and excursions until it spontaneously happened for real. Instead of exchanging rings, we created a symbolic video featuring the people in our tribes and emailed it to them. It served as both our engagement announcement and our save the date.

Parties. Have a shower, a bachelor(ette) party, or any other pre-wedding bash if you want. Whatever you end up doing (i.e., cake decorating classes, wine tasting, bar hopping, or bungy jumping) just make sure you actually have fun and that the party symbolizes who you are, independent of your spouse-to-be.

The Wedding Party. And speaking of parties, you get to decide who you want to represent you on the big day, without the gender binary getting in the way. That means that unlike many brides and grooms in the past, you get to choose bridesmen, groomsgals, or any other attendant in your wedding ensemble without the oppressive rule of “boys on this side of the aisle, girls on that side.”

What is also trending is not settling on any specific color theme for attire; don’t feel the pressure to have everyone in the wedding party match ensembles. For example, for our New England fall wedding, my husband and I chose to wear non-matching brown suits and asked our parties to wear any fall leaf color of their choosing. It was wonderful to watch the autumnal ensemble flurry their way down the aisle.

The Ceremony. Don’t feel as though you have to abandon tradition altogether. There may be aspects of sectarian customs that inspire you. For example, my husband and I both grew up going to Christian churches, and though we are not religious now, we liked some of the aesthetics of the services. We chose classic texts that reflected stories like ours – drawn from Gilgamesh and Plato – as well as church-like music selections that felt personal, from Philip Glass and Sinead O’Connor. Our spiritual guests not only got to reflect on our love, but also had no idea the service wasn’t taken from the Bible.

The Reception. Do you need to smash cake in each other’s faces? No. So if you don’t want to, don’t. If you want a first dance, do it: fast or slow, just the two of you, or with everyone as a big group. And if you want to dance with parents, why not go ahead and dance with your same-sex counterpart?

Your Wedding is a Performance
Don’t be afraid to embrace the limelight. It’s your day, so you should enjoy it.

That being said, you’ll want to prepare for show time the way actors do for a play. Allow yourself to daydream about each stage of the wedding ahead of time. Fantasize about the attention you will receive each step of the way, and how nice it will be to take that in. The more you are prepared to enjoy the attention, the better time you’ll have and the better time your guests will have. Trust me.

Also, don’t be thrown by relatives who may cringe at the sight of you kissing your beloved at the altar, your PDA in photographs or on the dance floor, your choice of outfit, or any other way in which you choose to enjoy the spotlight. These “traditional” or conservative relatives might induce inhibiting shame in you. Don’t let them. They are not the arbiters of appropriate. They simply suffer from what I call ‘Spotlight Ambivalence’: mixed feelings about exposing truth when it challenges the norm, causing folks to object when you take center stage. It’s about them, not about you.

But you might be able to actually glean tips from these same relatives. Ask them about their weddings and conflicts they had with their relatives when planning them. You might disarm them and find connections in unexpected places.

What You Take In Is More Important Than What You Put Out
Whether we’re straight or gay, we all face the exact same wedding dilemma: How to celebrate who we are and who we love, and how to take our crucial people along with us for the ride. The ensemble you assemble will nourish you – if you mentally prepare to take them in.

Three Meditation Tips for Travel

This meditation is one I use and recommend for when I am traveling. It is designed to be done for brief intervals. The tone it encourages is happy and light, and it will trigger a more positive vibration to accompany the traveler. Too often, when we are about to take a trip, we become anxious with excitement and/or nerves. It doesn’t matter whether they are positive or negative feelings, they can still alter your mood and affect it in ways you did not expect. Using the suggested meditation below will be a step in leading you to a more fulfilling travel experience.

1. Before you set out on your trip, it’s important to center yourself. Close your eyes. Inhale a very slow, deep breath in through your nose and exhale a very slow exhalation out through your nose again. Doing so will help you clear out the old energy while embracing new energy. Do this breath three times at the beginning and the end of your trip.

2. After you open your eyes, shake your hands out in front of you vigorously to shake up your energy a little. This will give you an energy jolt that will revive you with a supercharge.

3. Take an inventory of your surroundings. The more you are aware of what’s around you, the more comfortable you will be with where you are, and where you are headed.

These tips might seem too easy, but controlling your breathing with slow cleansing breaths before a trip can create a personal environment that lends itself to energy you can work with on a daily basis, no matter where you travel.

How To Meditate: Tips From Lama Surya Das, The ‘Buddha From Brooklyn’

(RNS) Lama Surya Das, the “Buddha from Brooklyn,” is one of the handful of Westerners who have been teaching meditation for decades. And yet, he says we’re doing it wrong.

“So many people seem to be moving narcissistically — conditioned by our culture, doubtless — into self-centered happiness-seeking and quietism, not to mention the use of mindfulness for mere effectiveness,” he said. True meditation, he said, generates wisdom and compassion, which may be very disquieting, at least in the short term.

Born Jeffrey Miller, Surya Das has had a spiritual journey that is remarkable in its breadth. He was given the name “Surya Das” by the Indian guru Neem Karoli Baba, made famous by Ram Dass more than 40 years ago. But Surya Das shifted gears in the early 1970s to Tibetan Buddhism, subsequently completing two three-year silent meditation retreats and becoming one of the first Westerners to be authorized as a Tibetan lama.

At the time, meditation was still considered pretty weird: foreign, exotic, hippie-ish. Now it’s everywhere. Meditation — especially mindfulness, which trains the mind to observe nonjudgmentally and attentively — has gone mainstream. In secular forms, it’s now widespread in health care, education, the corporate world, even the military. Each year, 1 million Americans take up the practice for the first time.

Surya Das is not entirely happy about that. “Mindful divorce, mindful parenting, mindful TV,” he complained. “Why not mindful sniping, poaching, or mindful waiting to find the opportunity to take advantage of and exploit someone when there’s a chink in their armor?”

Moreover, he said, because of the way meditation is taught, many people think they can’t do it. “’Quiet your mind’ or ‘calm and clear your mind’ are instructions I hear way too much. Some teachers actually encourage people to try to stop thinking, when in fact meditative awareness means being mindful of thoughts and feelings, not simply trying to reduce, alter or white them out and achieve some kind of oblivion.”

What’s missing? In his new book, “Make Me One With Everything” (the answer to a well-worn Buddhist joke: “What did the Zen monk say to the hot dog vendor?”), Surya Das argues for a return to the original purpose of Buddhist meditation: not relaxation, but liberation. The goal, he said, is “to genuinely learn how to gain direct access to Oneness, wholeness, completeness, integration with all the parts of themselves and life.”

“All the parts” is a crucial ingredient. In “Make Me One,” he proposes what he calls “co-meditation” — not trying to find a quiet “moment of Zen” apart from the messy, noisy world of work, family and children, but inviting all of the noise into meditation. That is indeed unorthodox in a contemporary context. But it is also part of the ancient Tibetan tradition known as Lojong, which often features elaborate visualizations — not quieting down and following the breath. Indeed, many of the book’s unusual meditation practices — sky-gazing, gardening, meditation for couples, and wild neologisms including Presencing, Convergitation and Momitation — are based on Surya Das’ years of studying and translating esoteric Tibetan teaching tales.

“It’s the same transformative and liberating essence, yet I think it’s pretty new for almost everyone today,” he said. “The anti-intellectual meditators, thought-swatters and imagination-suppressors have long ruled meditation-oriented circles in the West. But authentic meditative practices can enhance and even unleash the creativity and imagination.”

One benefit of these practices is that you don’t have to quiet the mind to do them. “It’s helpful for people who think they can’t meditate because they can’t sit still and think less. That ain’t the point.”

Still, bringing more noise into one’s meditation practice is diametrically opposed to the popular conception of meditation as calming and quieting. Surya Das calls that “the old New Age, self-growth, self-development, self-improvement emphasis — trying to use meditation to get away from it all. We need to erode the Grand Canyon-like gulf we see today between self and other, us and them, inner and outer, and even body and mind, body and soul, heaven and hell, liking and disliking, to realize the great equanimity of what is called in Tibetan Buddhism One Taste, and what others call unity vision, oneness, third-eye vision and the like.”

You may have already noticed that Surya Das speaks in long, often hilarious sentences, filled with puns and jokes. This rhetorical style is of a piece with his conceptual point — that awakening isn’t some calm, blissed-out state but is being at home with every state of mind, including the rapid-fire speech of a born-and-bred New Yorker.

For example, here’s how he summarizes the key teaching of the book, complete with 13 adjectives, 10 nouns and 11 verbs: “Can I say that this book presents, elucidates, rationalizes and instructs, in the extraordinary American-Buddhism’s fresh and newly minted, jargon-free, straight talkin’, practical and flexible, adaptable, personal and integratable, nonsectarian organic ways for a whole new way of meditating, with tips and pointers to find your own way and authentic practice style, thus avoiding many, if not most, of the obstacles and hindrances, doubts and distractions practitioners so often face and stumble upon?”

Sure you can.

There’s a refreshing honesty in this iconoclastic approach. Whatever awakening is, surely it has something to do with authenticity. And for some of us, authenticity is fast-talking, free-associating and full of sound and fury.

Or as Surya Das himself put it, “It can become obnoxious, I know, but I’m a folksy, campy, backyard bodhisattva-from-Brooklyn kinda guy, what can I say?”

5 Tips About How to Stop Thinking Like a Starving Artist

Most of my life I believed that if I went after a creative career I would struggle financially. It was deeply ingrained in my belief system. I would think about phrases like “poor starving artist” and “feast and famine are part of an artist’s life”. It was a nonsensical belief system that was very damaging to my motivation. I literally believed all artists or creative’s had a hard time.

I also felt like if I enjoyed my work and my creative projects, somehow I shouldn’t be paid properly or at all. Because I get joy from design, writing and art it used to be hard to expect actual money from being creative. Some people don’t value the arts as much as others. I have found a wide range of appreciation towards artistic projects from other people. Many people I have met have a great appreciation for design, writing and paintings. Other people I have met don’t value it at all. So as you can see the attitude and value is very different depending on the person viewing the work. How you value your own work is the most important part when getting over old crappy belief systems. You must believe you are good enough and talented enough. The rest falls into place with more confidence each step of the way.

My second belief deeply ingrained in me was if people thought I was creative they did not think I was business savvy. So I had a silly thought that I could not be creative and business smart at the same time. I held onto this conflict for most of my life. I am now 38 and realized a couple of years ago that I needed to change my inner thoughts around creativity, business and art. My life and business changed drastically, once I switched my thinking around.

1. Find some audio tapes so you can replace your belief system around feeling like a starving artist.
Start listening to people, podcasts and audio that speak highly of creativity and art. Invite people into your life that respect and admire your work. Focus on telling yourself the opposite of what you believe about money and creativity. I personally found I had to completely change my way of thinking around my work and what I have to offer the world. It took serious focus and quite of bit of time listening to other positive words around the subject. Audio tapes about positive thinking, business and art became my new best friends.

2. Make more art!
I say F**k what other people think. Don’t be shy, don’t hold yourself back, and don’t stop being you creatively because you are afraid. The more you feel inhibited, do the opposite and jump into your creative side, go for it. Use the fear like it is oil to fire. Be stubborn and keep creating!

3. Read more about what you feel afraid to learn, or think you can’t learn.
I felt uncomfortable around selling and marketing my own creations. So I switched my thinking and read as much business and marketing books I could possibly get my hands on. I hated this thought at first because all I wanted to do was design, draw, sketch, paint and write! It felt awful at first but once I took control, I felt so much better. The best part was, I felt more confident about my work in every way, including business. As soon as I faced my fears, I started earning more money for my creative efforts. The results felt instant!

4. Vulnerability brings great lessons in life.
Being vulnerable with your art, writing and creativity can be a huge step for some, including me. I always shied away from truly putting myself in front of people. I really disliked the feeling of possibly being rejected or feeling judged. I decided that my vulnerability was just what I needed to go forward. Nowadays if I feel vulnerable I take it as a sign that I need to do more of it. The rebel side of me comes out and I just make the leap into the unknown and see what happens. Feeling rejected is all part of the process. Of course we are going to get rejected sometimes but you can’t get a big fat “yes” if you don’t try. Trust me, the uncomfortable feelings soften and become less of an issue, the more you simmer with your own vulnerability.

5. Hide out for awhile and stop any outside influences from interrupting your change of thinking.
Changing how you perceive something takes time. You may need to back away from friends or family for a little while, until you get grounded on your new way of looking at creativity. For me, if I honor my ideas by executing them and being true to myself I then value my work in a much higher regard. Taking yourself seriously and working hard, can increase your creativity and trusting the process can open up opportunities as if by magic.

I believe in God. I believe in Angels. I believe in Miracles. I trust Love. I believe that when we open our hearts with gratitude, we attract more to be grateful for. I also believe in prosperity and feel that by living through the heart and giving to others, we lift our vibratory field, and draw in abundance. God created the trees, flowers, oceans, sunrises and sunsets, and the natural law which keeps our world evolving. Why do we question if God will take care of us?

We are living in a secular society, and mysticism is something we are conditioned to question. We fear for our world. We fear for ourselves and our families. Our minds are biased to negativity, and therefore, we often perceive information that is meant to be neutral as something that is hurtful.

What if we could move beyond the fear-based mindsets and live from the space of tender love in our hearts? What if we trusted that sending prayers out to others, instead of worrying and feeling sad for them, would be enough? Imagine a world where we could trust the divine intelligence of the universe. Love and Light leading the path to eternal life. What a miracle.

Pushing, forcing, manipulating and competing are tactics that do not work anymore. Our world is changing quickly, and we are beginning to understand that without knowing how, miracles are all around us. There are no coincidences in life Every encounter is a light that shines to show us the path to our destiny. When we choose to focus on love and thankfulness, something profound shifts in our lives. A flow becomes very apparent. Just like the flowers bloom naturally by the force of nature, our lives unfold with grace. The beauty of a surrendering into the blossoming with patience and trust is a gift for us at this time.

How do we shift into the miracle mindset?

1. Breath. Breathing deeply and slowly changes our brain chemistry instantaneously. Imagine the lower belly as a balloon that expands with each inhale. As the exhale releases through the nose, the lower belly soften towards the spine.

2. Gratitude. Taking a couple minutes daily to write down ten things we are grateful for is one of the most efficient tools for happiness. Giving thanks for the blessings we are desiring before they are in our lives is a magical practice.

3. Observation. When we observe the miracles that we encounter daily, we begin to recognize Grace at work. The book that falls off the shelf when we are at the library with our children which provides the wisdom we need at that exact moment. The beautiful new friend we meet in a crowded cafe on a snowy day when we are craving a hot cup of tea is a soul that needs our smile at that instant. The butterfly that appears before our eyes when we are missing a loved one is a reminder that heaven is real. The song that plays when we are in traffic, reminding us that another is thinking of us just as we are thinking of them, is the reinforcement of soul connectivity.

4. Affirmation. When we retrain our brains from old belief systems that are holding us back from joy by using the power of affirmations, we are creating an expansion of love in our hearts. A simple affirmation is to state: “I am the light and love of my soul, and everything is in perfect order. I believe in the power of miracles.”

5. Prayer. How can we deny the power of something much larger than us? Prayer is the greatest technique for moving out of our own way. Prayer is the tool that allows us to place our concerns in the hand of the divine. When I pray, I place my forehead on the ground so my mind is lower than my heart. This brings my energy to the frequency love. Once I feel myself drop into the heart space, I speak aloud in a whisper saying: “Dear God, please show me the way to joy, healing and love. Please bless my loved ones. Please take my insecurities and fears away, so I can be a vessel for your love. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”

Love has the power to transform us. Faith has the power to heal us. When we open our hearts, our radiance projects out into the space around our bodies, and we become magnets to miracles.

May you feel God’s Love with you as you read this. There is a reason this message is here for you. Please accept it as a gift from beyond. May God bless you today and forever.

It’s the biggest shopping season of them all, but Santa isn’t the only one who should be checking his list twice. If you were planning on shopping for an amazing holiday outfit or thoughtful gifts for friends and family? This is a great time to do it. However, a successful weekend of shopping is all about planning. It can mean the difference between the satisfaction of getting all your holiday shopping done a month in advance and waking up on Tuesday with a shopping hangover or buyer’s remorse. Here are 10 things to consider as you move into the weekend.

  1. What is Black Friday?
    It’s the day after Thanksgiving. This year, that’s November 28th. The day is marked by major sales and discounts. It’s called Black Friday because the day puts retailers “in the black” e.g. making a profit.
  2. What is Cyber Monday? Before the internet, we only had Black Friday. People would wake up extra early to go shopping for deals. There was coffee involved. That still happens but Cyber Monday started as a day of online deals for people who don’t want to brave the crowds or cold on Friday. However, most shops have Black Friday sales online now too, so it’s worth checking out online deals early Friday morning.
  3. Which one should I shop, Friday or Monday? Here’s my advice. Some discounts go live Friday and some items will sell out. If you have your heart set on something and it goes on crazy sale Friday? Buy! If you are shopping in general, are flexible, and want the deepest discounts? Wait until Monday!
  4. What is this Small Business Saturday I heard about? It’s a day to support local businesses. Is there a small shop in your town you love? They might have great after-Thanksgiving sales too. Check them out because small businesses keep communities thriving.
  5. What makes a good discount? Because I’m a fashion blogger, I’ve had a sneak peak at many of the best deals in fashion during this year’s shopping weekend. Many of the discounts I’ve seen are 30-50 percent off. I personally wouldn’t accept less than this range. Like many others, I will be posting my favorite deals on my blog at the stroke of midnight on Friday.
  6. I am against the commercialization of holidays and this post offends me. I totally understand, however it still stands that this is a great time for deals. If you were going to shop anyway, this is a way to stretch your dollar. I personally don’t like the idea of shopping on Thanksgiving and think it’s perfectly fine to avoid stores that make their workers miss the holiday. Thanksgiving should be spent with loved ones, not fighting with a stranger over a BluRay player. Friday, Saturday, and Monday are more than enough, and you can do much of it from your home in your pajamas.
  7. I’m definitely shopping, what can I do in the meantime? Plan ahead. Who are you shopping for? Yourself? Friends? Family? First, decide on an overall budget and stick to it. Remember, the weekend should be about shopping smart.
  8. What’s a good Black Friday or Cyber Monday shopping strategy? Pull up your favorite shops and compare the deals. The internet is always open so Black Friday starts at midnight. If you find something you absolutely love, buy or risk it selling out. If you’re just window shopping, keep looking so you make the best choices. Keep notes of all purchases and expected packages. Don’t make impulse purchases. If you’re shopping in-store, bundle up and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Be kind to others; you’re not going into battle. At the end of the day, it’s just shopping.
  9. Help, I’m scared to shop for clothes online! Know your measurements and use the size charts. If you are like me, you’ll be grabbing that extra serving of stuffing (my favorite) the evening before – and the morning after. So know your size before then so you can ensure a perfect fit.

Planning a Honeymoon? Don’t Miss These 6 Tips!

Some days I wish I could go back and plan our wedding all over again. Just kidding, I would never wish for that, but what I DO wish I could do is plan our honeymoon all over again. We were less than thrilled with Costa Rica (you can’t win them all!), but you can’t go wrong using any of the below tips.

Planning a honeymoon? Here is some of my best advice!

1. Don’t use a travel agent. They are getting commission off the packages they sell to you, so they’re going to guide you toward the packages where they receive the highest revenue. I would do the same thing! What I’m saying is–only you know what you will like. The reality is that the majority of these travel agents have never been to the resorts and destinations they’re selling you on. Before our honeymoon, we had always booked trips ourselves and figured we would take a chance since we had heard great things regarding travel agents making THE BEST arrangements. Never again, lesson learned.

2. If you’re going to a tropical, all-inclusive type of place, you will live in your swimsuit, so pack accordingly. I got this advice before we went on ours and made sure I had a different bathing suit for everyday, as well as a new cover-up. It helps later when you’re trying to differentiate days via photos

3. If you have any sort of food allergies, pack things like granola bars, that you know you’ll be able to eat in a pinch. My husband verified with our resort that I would have plenty to eat with a gluten allergy, but when we got there it was a totally different story. Being sick for eight days on your honeymoon IS NOT fun. Thankfully, I always keep at least one box of KIND bars in my suitcase when I travel.

4. Use your days to unwind and completely unplug. I know, I know. You want to look at all your wedding photos, check in on Facebook & Instagram and make sure your email inbox hasn’t imploded. I did, too! Save it for the evenings when your significant other is grabbing a shower or you have some downtime before dinner. Spend your daytime simply taking in your time off!

5. This one seems obvious, but I was completely aloof. For international travel regardless of if the resort says you will not need it, bring a converter. So many of our plug-in items (hairdryer, toothbrush, razor, etc.) completely failed on us mid-trip because we weren’t able to charge them! The items we were able to charge made this horrendous buzzing noise that led me to believe they would explode at any given moment. Just pack that darn converter.

6. Again for international travel, make sure your passport is up to date! One thing that didn’t happen to me, but happened to a friend is in regards to passports and name changing. If you plan on taking a later honeymoon and have changed your name officially, make sure your passport matches the name on the ticket! They will 100 percent not let you on the plane otherwise. YIKES!

3 Tips for Practicing Meditation in the Office

Wherever we are, we have the ability to be present. On the meditation cushion, we can be present with the physical sensation of our breathing. Off the meditation cushion, we can be present with the people we encounter, our morning commute, the food we eat, everything. That is the purpose of meditation practice: to become more present and aware of every aspect of our life.

When it comes to work, we always have a choice. We can schlep through our day-to-day existence, considering those hours we are working to be a waste of time, constantly looking ahead to our time off, or we can engage it in a way that makes us feel like we are participating in a life worth living. Meditation practice helps us slow down and be present enough to recognize the small joys about our work, as well as its frustrations. It helps us sort through the muck of our own mind, know our intention clearly, and live our lives fully. For a short video on how to meditate, click here.

I recommend that people start their day with meditation, when their mind is fresh. However, the timing for when we meditate is going to look different for different people. Some people love to meditate when they get home from work. Others like to take some time in the middle of their day, during their lunch break. Regardless of what works for you, try to start off with ten minutes a day, as many days a week as you can. It is said that after eleven days of doing anything in a row it becomes habit forming, so if you want to start meditating regularly try sticking to it for that consecutive period. Over time, if you miss a day here or there no need to beat yourself up.

That daily meditation practice can be the foundation for your spiritual journey. However, to think that you leave your mindfulness on the meditation cushion when you’re done with a meditation session would be foolish. We are, after all, practicing for something. That something is the rest of our life.

Since we spend so much time at work, it is helpful to take moments to practice meditation throughout our day. If we have one meditation session at some point in our day we can use that as the jumping off point for very short sessions throughout the rest of it.

With that in mind, there are a few techniques I would recommend in practicing meditation at your work, be it a post office, an auto body shop, a library, or even a busy department store.

The Ding Meditation

One thing I like to do is set a timer to go off once an hour. I set a reminder on my phone, and after sixty minutes it will go “ding!” No matter what I am working on I am reminded to raise my gaze, connect with my posture, and meditate for a minute. I don’t set a timer for that part of the process, I just practice for what feels like a minute or two then reset the timer and go back to work.

The Red Dot Meditation

My very first meditation instructor offered me this technique when I expressed interest in meditation as a child. He knew I would grow restless if I had to sit still for long periods of time so he recommended I take red circular sticker dots (you can find them at any stationary store) and post them around my house. When I walked by one and noticed it, I should think of it as a tiny STOP sign and pause, connect with my body, pay attention to my breath for a few moments, then move on. Try to do this in your own work environment. They are small enough that very few people will notice them, and it cuts through the habitual way you might rush about the place.

The Buddy System

It’s often helpful to have a community of other meditators who encourage you to practice regularly. With that in mind, try to figure out if there is someone else in your place of employment who is interested in pursuing meditation. If so, you two can carve out some time during lunch or another break and meditate together for ten minutes. You don’t have to practice meditation at home all by yourself; you two can find a quiet spot on the grass outside or on a bench somewhere, set a timer, and enjoy one another’s support. Granted, it is extraordinary to find this sort of spiritual friend at work, but if you can you will experience a great level of support for your meditation practice; it’s worth asking your colleagues if they are interested.

The more we begin to offer ourselves the gift of meditation, both in longer sessions and in little moments throughout our day, the more we are able to connect with the present moment. By enjoying the present moment we are able to connect with the details of our life, and experience every moment as an opportunity to connect with our basic goodness. From there, our strong mind can support us throughout our day.

5.5 Tips To Get Better Tennis Photos

While in Florida for a family event my cousin was taking part in a tennis clinic that I decided to photograph. I have always loved tennis, I played when I was younger and have shot a few professional events in the past.

FRO_6219There are some rules of thumb that I want to pass along for those who want to get out there and photograph some matches.

First and foremost you will hear a lot about making sure you get the ball in the frame. Now this is not always possible or written in stone. But it does tend to add interest to the image. Trying to capture the perfect moment of the racquet about to strike the ball doesn’t mean motor driving. You want to anticipate the action because the motor drive may not always capture what you are looking for.

Second look for what direction the sun is. Is the sun straight up in the air? Is it early morning or late afternoon. The reason this is important is if the player has is on their forehand and you are shooting into the sun you may not get the proper light in their face. They will be backlit which if you are not in manual could lead to the camera exposing for the background.

It is a good idea to have the sun at your back and into the players face. Of course the players will be moving around the court but sometimes it’s best to hold off until they switch sides to capture more images.

Third Emotions!!! Many times after a solid shot the player will let out a scream or give a fist pump. Other times after a bad shot there could be a not so happy reaction. These reaction shots can sometimes be some of the strongest ones you capture.

Fourth Fill the Frame. Yes I am on to the fill the frame and don’t crop message once again. Like I have said time and time again it is personal preference but do your best to fill the frame in the camera so you are not cropping after the fact.

Good lens choices for tennis would be a lens in the 70-200 range or a fixed 300 or 400 depending on the type of action you are looking to capture. With that said since you will be shooting outside you can break out the kit 55-200’s or 70-300 lenses and get acceptableresults. Remember with these type of lenses that shooting out at the furthest zoom will help compress the background more.

Five: Matches tend to be long so don’t be afraid to experiment with the shots you are capturing. For part of a game try to capture the serve. For otherstry and focus on capturing the ball right before or after it strikes the racquet. Shoot some wide, tight and ultra tight. Finally don’t be afraid to shoot horizonticles and verticals as you never know which will turn out to be the winning shot.

Five Point Five: Shoot RAW. I don’t buy into the school of thought that because you are shooting sports you shooting shouldn’t RAW. The mentality that you will be shooting so many images and RAW would take up to much space and take to much time to edit is bs.

Don’t overshoot and you have nothing to worry about. That RAW file will be well worth having in the long run so don’t wimp out.

How should you set the camera?

I look generally want to have a very fast shutter speed for freezing the action. That means I am in the range of 1/2000th and up. Some of your cameras will top out at 1/4000th and others will be 1/8000th. Having such a fast shutter speed will help freeze the ball, the player and the racquet. Keep in mind that it is okay to experiment with your settings to try and pan with a player at a slower shutter speed or track the action.

For these sample shots I was around F4. I could have shot at 2.8 to help compress the background more or 3.2 or 3.5 would have given me similar results. Thinking back maybe I should have shot some at 2.8 to see what the difference would have been but I did not.

Part of my thinking for shooting at F4 was to make sure that I gave myself some extra room with my focus. I am not saying I was thinking I would miss focus but more that it would be a good idea to get more of the face and body locked in.

Since I was shooting at a higher shutter speed and closed down to F4 that meant my ISO was going to be bumped slightly. I know people always say to keep your ISO down as much as possible when you are shooting outside but when you need that faster shutter speed your trade off is bumping the ISO. With that said every DSLR for the past 10 years would be able to handle 400 ISO in bright daylight without an issue.

There is nothing to be afraid of when it comes to slightly bumping the ISO. I look at it as you can not freeze the motion and keep your ISO down which theoretically means less noise or grain (which I still don’t generally see with even the D610’s) or you could get exactly what you want and not worry about it.

There are a few places that you can sit on the court or around the court that can lead to great images. Many times you will be along the side of the court which makes for some great action shots of the players moving and striking the ball.

If you have the ability to shoot behind the baseline and have a super telephoto lens you can shoot directly into the player on the other side of the court. These shots can be great for getting the ball in the frame, capturing emotion and getting a winning frame.

Finally don’t be afraid to go above court level. Some places have stands or elevated platforms that allow to shoot down on a player serving or capture some action you might not have seen at court level.

All and all I am happy with the shots I captured. I would have liked to have captured more images with the ball in the frame. I was not shooting a match so there weren’t as many opportunities to capture points. During match play you have a good 45 min to a few hours depending on the tournaments to capture images.
