Why Sony Took a Pricey Bet on Tarantino and ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’

Despite glowing reviews, A-list movie stars and a singular filmmaker who inspired an across-the-board studio bidding war, Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” still represented a massive creative risk for financier and distributor Sony Pictures. Now it seems a risk well taken, as the studio marks a career-best opening weekend for Tarantino, […]

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Just Took the Next Step by Getting a New Dog

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have a new addition: a pup to share their lives, PEOPLE has confirmed.

The couple got the dog — believed to be a Labrador — in early summer, and the pooch has been joining them at their country getaway in the Cotswolds area and Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace in London, a source says.

Harry and Meghan’s new best friend will be a welcome addition to their rural walks. Dog lover Meghan, 37, had to leave one of her pets, Bogart, behind when she arrived in London from Toronto last November, when the couple got engaged. The rescue dog, a companion for Meghan’s Beagle Guy, was given to friends.

Guy, meanwhile, has been embedded into Meghan’s new royal life, and was at her feet as she sat for her hair and makeup on her wedding morning.

A spokeswoman at Kensington Palace declined to comment on the new arrival.

Harry and Meghan’s move mirrors that of his brother Prince William and Kate Middleton, who got Cocker Spaniel Lupo shortly after their wedding, settling him into life with them in Anglesey, North Wales.

While Harry and George played basketball, Meghan lounged by the pool with Amal and helped look after the Clooneys’ 14-month-old twins, Ella and Alexander, according to the outlet. The Clooneys also reportedly held a dinner party to celebrate their guests.

Vanessa Williams Says Jean Claude Van Damme Once Said Her Eyes ‘Look Like Lasers’ (But She Took It as a Compliment!)

It goes without saying that at 54 years old, Vanessa Williams is a true American beauty. But when looking at the former Miss America, it’s hard to miss one feature: her striking bold blue eyes. And we’re not alone on that one. Apparently, Williams says she’s gotten some pretty interesting compliments about her big blues over the years.

“When I was performing at the casino in Monte Carlo and Jean Claude Van Damme came up to me after the show and said ‘Your eyes look like lasers!’ the Clear Eyes spokeswoman tells PeopleStyle. “That was a big compliment because it was unexpected and very comedic.” So it’s a fitting match to see Williams continuing her relationship with Clear Eyes by starring in the brand’s television spot called My Shining Moment, which celebrates the positive moments in people’s lives.

“I love the new catchphrase ‘Your shining moment,’ because those are the things as a parent you try to instill in your kids — to know that life is precious and there are rough times, but there are some shining moments you need to celebrate,” Williams said.

RELATED PHOTOS: 3 Fresh Ways to Wear a Denim Mini Skirt

It goes without saying the star’s had her fair share of shining moments throughout her life in the spotlight, whether it be tying the knot to her husband John Skrip or judging the Miss America competition 32 years after she originally took the crown. But Williams’ standout shining moment happened at the start of her career.

“I grew up outside N.Y.C. and always went to Broadway shows. To see my name in lights at my opening night on Broadway and to see my parents and family and all the people I had gone to school with see me star in a Broadway show back in 1994, I would probably have to say that was a collective win for us all,” the actress told us.

Because of her combined singing and acting careers, Williams has been a red-carpet regular for years. But she says walking the carpet today is a completely different experience than when she started. “It has gotten more massive as years have gone on. The initial red carpet was entering an event and saying hi and moving on,” Williams said. “Now it is a complete photoshoot — the red carpet is work! It’s another event unto itself before even getting to the main event.”

FROM COINAGE: The Crazy Cost of a Lifetime of Beauty

But when Williams admits the greatest joy — besides all the glitz and glam of fame — is connecting with fans.

“I feel most like myself when I’m making a connection with someone and I see the light in their eyes,” she told us. “My favorite part about singing in front of an audience is seeing them sing along — they know every word and you can see tears in their eyes.”

What is your shining moment? Tell us yours in the comments below.

Joshua Jackson Congratulates Ex Diane Kruger on Best Actress Win at Cannes: ‘What Took ‘Em So Long!’

Joshua Jackson has nothing but admiration and affection for his ex Diane Kruger.

The actor took to Instagram on Sunday to congratulate the actress on her best actress win at the 70th annual Cannes Film Festival, 10 months after the two called it quits after a decade together.

Kruger took home the award for her performance in the drama In the Fade, which follows a woman grappling with the aftermath of her family’s death in a bombing.

“Yes she Cannes,” he wrote in the post, including a graphic announcing Kruger as the award’s recipient. “Having witnessed the integrity and dedication that you bring to every job, I’m over the moon to see you getting the recognition you deserve. Only question is what took ’em so long! CONGRATULATIONS, Josh.”

Kruger and Jackson split in July 2016. In a statement to PEOPLE, reps said the two “have decided to separate and remain friends.”

For full coverage of the Cannes Film Festival, including the biggest stars and best red carpet moments, check out people.com/cannes-film-festival

They’ve since remained friendly, stepping out together a month after the split for a stroll in Los Angeles, and then again a few days later, when they were seen hugging at the Los Angeles International Airport.

Jackson has since been spotted getting cozy with a mystery brunette at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

Kruger, meanwhile, has gone public with her romance with Norman Reedus, with the two — who met on the 2015 film Sky — stepping out in New York City in March for a sweet, PDA-filled stroll following repeated sightings together in previous weeks.

Barack Obama Took A Vacation Photo Of Michelle And The Internet Loves It

Barack Obama has been enjoying a relatively responsibility-free life since leaving the White House in January. But some commitments are forever, like always taking a photo of your wife on vacation.

The former president was spotted serving as Michelle Obama’s dutiful Instagram husband on a boat near the French Polynesian island Moorea. (For extra dad points, he appears to be using a tablet.) It’s a familiar scene to anyone who’s ever gone on vacation with their significant other, until you learn the “boat” is an over 450-foot yacht belonging to bllionaire David Geffen, and that Bruce Springsteen and his wife, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, and possibly Oprah were also on board.

The star-studded sail marks yet another envy-inducing aspect of Barack and Michelle Obama’s lives over the past month. Since January, they both hung out in Palm Springs and joined Richard Branson in the British Virgin Islands; he then holed up in an exclusive private island once owned by Marlon Brando, and she eventually joined him for some tropical paddleboarding

Much like everything else these two do, this photo opp prompted a delighted reaction from fans on social media:

Sigh. What we wouldn’t give to be a fly on that fancy, fancy yacht.

Two Pups Took Engagement Pics And The Cuteness Is Off The Charts

Spring is here and puppy love is in the air for this canine couple.

In March, Luna, a Pomeranian, and Sebastian, a French bulldog, of the Instagram account @SebastianLovesLuna, posed for some paws-itively precious engagement pics around Washington D.C.

Sebastian and Luna’s owner, Emily Abril, who used to be a portrait photographer, got behind the lens for the shoot.

“I’ve always described them as an old married couple,” Abril told The Huffington Post. “One minute they are licking each other’s faces, the next minute they are barking and chasing after each other and then they’re napping.”

But it wasn’t love at first sight for the pup pair.

“Luna came a month prior and ruled the house,” Abril said. “Now, they balance each other out. They are playful and loving.”

Sebastian “pupped” the question at the Lincoln Memorial in June 2016. Now the wedding is set for either this fall or next spring. Abril hopes to set up a wedding registry for the couple that will raise money for an animal welfare organization.

For more on Sebastian and Luna’s adventures, head over to Instagram.

Florida Woman Took Photo with Slain Police Officer Just Minutes Before He Died in London Attack

A Florida mother vacationing in London snapped a picture with police officer Keith Palmer just minutes before he was killed in Wednesday’s terror attack on Parliament.

Staci Martin said she was visiting London for the first time over spring break when she stumbled upon the 48-year-old officer wearing a “funny hat,” she told WPTV.

“I see his hat and I’m like, ‘I have to take a picture of him with his hat,” she told the station, noting that the attacks occurred less than an hour after the photo was taken. “We got in an Uber not even 15 seconds later, we turned to the corner and this guy came up to the window and was like, ‘there was a shooting, there was a shooting.”

Palmer was among four victims killed in the deadly car and knife attack outside U.K. Parliament. The assailant — identified by Scotland Yard as U.K. native Khalid Masood — careened through the area at about 2:40 p.m. local time, hitting dozens of pedestrians before crashing into the gate outside the Palace of Westminster.

He got out of the vehicle and stabbed Palmer before being killed by guards, authorities said. Scotland Yard is calling the incident terrorism.

Martin said she saw Palmer’s picture in media after the attack and couldn’t believe her eyes.

“They put his picture up and I said, ‘I think that’s the guy’ and my husband and daughter thought I was crazy,” she told WPTV. “We just couldn’t believe it.”

In the photo, Martin is shown smiling wide while Palmer, who appeared to be on duty at the time, gave a small smirk.

She wrote of the photo in a Facebook post, according to WFTS.

“At 1:52 p.m., we were walking passed Parliament and I saw an officer. I liked his funny hat so I asked him if we could take a picture … He was very polite,” she wrote.

“At 2:40 he was fatally stabbed by the terrorist and died leaving behind a wife and children.”

Prime Minister May said the attacker was British-born and known to authorities, the Associated Press reports.

In the wake of the incident, authorities arrested eight people in raids around Britain, according to CNN. Their connection to the attack was not immediately clear.

Martin told WFTS that she is shocked by the timing of the events.

“You think if I had only been there a half an hour later in the exact spot,” she said. “You can call it God or fate or whatever you want to call it, it’s a little bit surreal for sure.”

Chance The Rapper Took Us To Church Last Night. Here’s Why That Matters.

Chance the Rapper thanked God like a trillion times in his acceptance speech for Best New Artist at Sunday night’s Grammys. Then he took the Grammys to church with a passionate, gospel-filled performance that featured a poppin’ choir, Kirk Franklin, and Tamela Mann. It was a rousing, meaningful on-stage moment for the 23-year-old Chicago rapper, who won his first three Grammy awards that evening with no record sales.

Performing a medley of “How Great,” “All We Got” and “No Problem” from his groundbreaking album “Coloring Book,” Chance was playing no games. The show was slowly creeping into its third hour, but the rapper was was not only brimming with energy, he was demanding it of the audience, too.

“Hey y’all better stand up right now, stop playing,” he bellowed halfway through the performance. “I’m talking about God!”

The story of black people and God, or at least the Christian God, is obviously fraught. It was the Bible and Christianity that were ostensibly used to as tools towards the enslavement and colonization of Africans. But it was the same Bible, the same God, that stood at the center of so many spiritual and political movements that helped black people become free. It’s complicated.

What’s not complicated, though, is the intrinsic connection between the black Church and black music. So many black musical greats, from Stevie Wonder to Whitney Houston, found their voice and honed their talent singing gospel music on Sundays. Those threads have have often found their way into secular music, both subtly and blatantly. Chance’s Sunday night performance was a powerful reminder and homage to the role that gospel has always played in the black music that shapes popular culture.

Bringing the likes of Kirk Franklin and the legendary Tamela Mann onstage with him on what was likely the biggest night of his career thus far sent a huge message. It was a tipping of the hat, a moment of celebration and recognition of a part of black culture that rarely gets its props in the mainstream.

Tired Of Baby Questions, This Couple Took Pics With Their Pup Instead

Australian couple Matt Kay and Abby Lee were tired of people asking them when they were going to have kids.

With the the help of their photographer friend Elisha Collins of Elisha Minette Photography, the couple of two years came up with the idea of of doing a newborn-style photo shoot with their canine bundle of joy instead.

“Our families joke around about when are we having kids,” Abby told The Huffington Post. “We thought the newborn shoot would be a humorous response.”

“We came up with the idea when we were on the long drive home from picking Humphrey up from the groodle (golden retriever-poodle mix) breeder,” Elisha told HuffPost. “Abby and I have the craziest sense of humor and we feed off of each other with ideas.”

The pictures of the impossibly photogenic pup and his fur parents began to go viral after Elisha posted them to her Facebook page earlier this week.

“We did this shoot just for a little bit of humor between ourselves and our closest family and friends that have the same sense of humor as us,” she said. “We did not expect this to get as big as it has.”

Elisha stressed that the photo session was not intended to make fun of new parents or those who enjoying sharing about their kids on social media.

“This was just clean, simple Sunday afternoon fun,” she added.

Zoe Saldana Doesn’t Get Why Everyone’s Shocked Her Husband Took Her Name

Zoe Saldana is here to remind men that it’s NBD to take your wife’s last name.

“Fathers, sons, brothers, men everywhere: Your legacy will not perish if you take your partner’s surname, or she keeps hers,” the actress wrote in a June 8 Facebook post.

In an interview for the July cover story of InStyle, Saldana revealed that her husband, Italian artist Marco Perego, chose to adopt her last name after their 2013 marriage.

“I tried to talk him out of it. I told him, ‘If you use my name, you’re going to be emasculated by your community of artists, by your Latin community of men, by the world’,” she told InStyle. “But Marco looks up at me and says [she puts on a cute Italian accent], ‘Ah, Zoe, I don’t give a sheet.’”

The news made headlines across the web (including in this publication), because, it’s still the assumed default for a woman who marries a man to change her name to match his — however retro that may seem. According to a 2013 YouGov poll , 61 percent of respondents thought that women should take their husbands’ last names, while less than half of those polled even thought that a man should be allowed to take his wife’s name.

Saldana shared her thoughts on Facebook about the public reaction to her husband’s name. “Why is it so surprising, shocking, eventful that a man would take his wife’s surname?,” she asked. “Women have never been asked if its ok for them to give up their names — why doesn’t that make the news?”

She went on to reassure men that their identities would not be erased by a simple name change, imploring us all the rethink the way we define what being a masculine man means:

Men, you will not cease to exist by taking your partner’s surname. On the contrary — you’ll be remembered as a man who stood by change. I know our sons will respect and admire their father more because their father lead by example.
Gentlemen, I implore you to think outside the box- remove the box altogether. Let’s redefine masculinity. A real “man” leads along side his partner. A real man accepts his mortality. A real man acknowledges that nothing can be done alone.

(You can read the full Facebook post below.)

Fathers, sons, brothers, men everywhere: Your legacy will not perish if you take your partner’s surname, or she keeps…

Viola Davis Refused To Do ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ Unless Annalise Took Off Her Wig

In one of the most memorable scenes of this year’s television season, Viola Davis’ “How to Get Away with Murder” character Annalise Keating removed her wig, jewelry and makeup on screen.

As it turns out, that scene was integral to Davis’ decision to take on the role, according to comments the actress made at the show’s recent For Your Consideration panel (via Vulture):

There was something for me that I didn’t buy about Annalise in private. It felt like who she was in private had to be diametrically opposed to who she was in public. And so in order to do that, I felt like I had to physically take the wig off. I mean, I have no eyebrows. I have eyelashes that I put on, and there was something extremely vulnerable about that act — and I know it seems like a very simple act at the end of the day — but for me, that simple act really surmounted to something very powerful in the end, because what it was was someone being very, very private in public, which is absolutely the cornerstone of what we do as artists.

The scene was but one of many that broke network TV barriers in the first season of “How to Get Away with Murder,” which garnered praise for its depiction of gay sex and nuanced exploration of sexual violence.

For more of Davis’ comments from the panel, head over to Vulture.

It Took Getting Engaged For Me To Learn The Truth About Marriage Proposals

Few people get to spend their workdays watching heartfelt proposal videos all day, and I count myself lucky to be one of them. As the Senior Editor of HuffPost Weddings, I also read tons of meet-cute stories, attend bridal fashion shows and scroll through hundreds of gorgeous wedding photos. It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.

When I first started doing this job two years ago, every flash mob, Jumbotron and writing-in-the-sky marriage proposal could bring me to tears. This is the best proposal ever, I thought again and again. How perfectly suited this Bruno Mars song is to marriage proposals! We featured flash mob after flash mob after flash mob. We — and our audience — couldn’t get enough.

Now, as Associate Editor Kelsey Borresen and I joke, it takes a lot to impress us. Run-of-the-mill flash mobs usually result in eye rolls. And don’t even get me started on the latest wave of fake arrest marriage proposals (who wants to be scared to death before one of the happiest moments of your life? No one).

When a staff writer from another department pitches a proposal video, they’ll often tell me it’s the “best marriage proposal ever.” Their copy exudes a lovely naiveté, the writing filled with over-the-top adjectives and pronouncements. I’m not really a fan of calling anything “the best ever.” Certainly there is something out there that is even bigger, better, more meaningful and over the top. Why put all our eggs in one Tiffany blue box — err, basket?

But after my boyfriend of 10 years (hey, I edit HuffPost Divorce too) popped the question recently, it became clear that, in fact, my proposal was the best proposal. He did it in a completely surprising way — on a Friday morning before I had left for the office, during a routine workday task. It was the last story idea in Kelsey’s morning pitch e-mail: High school sweetheart proposes to long-time girlfriend. I clicked and found out that the proposal was mine.

What followed (after the initial crying, tackling him to the floor and calling everyone I know) was a full day of surprises including lunch at our first date spot, dinner with our families (with a surprise visit from my sister, who flew in from Arizona), and a surprise party at my parents’ house with all my closest friends. It was perfect. And everyone I told about my proposal agreed.

In the week after we got engaged, I joked with colleagues that I was going to write a story called “10 Signs My Marriage Proposal Was The Best Proposal Ever” (that, or “Proof That My Marriage Proposal Was The Best Proposal”). What I realized in recounting the story again and again was that my proposal was the best proposal because it was just that — my proposal. My boyfriend — err, fiancé (still getting used to that!) — could have asked me to marry him in any number of ways and all of those ways would have been perfect because he is the perfect person for me, and me for him.

So go ahead — plan an elaborate flash mob, a scavenger hunt or simply roll over in bed and say, “Hey, wanna make this official?” Your marriage proposal will be the best proposal ever because it’s yours. And I promise, no more eye-rolling from me.

Cheesing big time after the best marriage proposal ever.

John Mayer Just Took Instagram Filters To The Next Level

We all have that one friend who takes choosing an Instagram filter very seriously. You know, the ones who debate whether to go with the dramatic Brannan or the bright X Pro II for so long that they start to look older than the selfie they’re trying to perfect? So good to see my friend Ricky again. It’s been a while.

When I Was a Kid, We Took Pictures With Cameras

We all know there’s more than one downside to the omnipresent smartphone–the invention of the ‘selfie’, the calloused thumbs, the inability to bullshit our way through a discussion about, well, anything that can be Googled.

But you know what my favorite upside is? The ability to take a picture at any given moment. No, I’m not talking about catching a nominee for the ‘People of Wal-Mart’ blog; I’m talking about taking pictures of my kids.

The truth is, I really didn’t take any pictures at all before I succumbed to the allure of that sleek rectangular gadget. In fact, everything I’ve learned about photography has indirectly been the result of stumbling across a photo app a few years ago. Now that I’m able to take photos at any given moment, countless events that were once seemingly insignificant (like, uh, dental visits) have been captured on-the-fly, off-the-cuff, and even in middle of the street. The fact is, even if I had owned a camera, those spur-of-the-moment memories would likely have never been immortalized had I not been wielding my trusty iPhone.

So the next time someone collides into me on the street whilst checking Facebook, I’m going to think about that perfect photo of my kid–the one that was taken by a phone, the one that’s going be sitting on the mantle for the next six years, and yes, even the one that’s going to be sitting on a hard drive for the next sixteen.

Sure, I’ll likely succumb to carpal tunnel syndrome within the next year or two and end up with the permanent posture of someone decades older than me, but that hike we took on our family vacation? It holds a permanent place via some pixels in square form.

And when I’m in line for a coffee and the guy in front of me is haphazardly ordering a chai tea latte with almond milk and an extra pump of chai while day trading stocks, instead of whacking him upside the head, I’ll just take it as a trade-off. He gets to be obnoxious, I get to remember that look on my daughter’s face when she’s grown, and maybe her kids will get to know her a little bit better because of it.

Admittedly, not all of the disadvantages involve other people, and the perceived urgency my phone causes in me is distressing. It’s just slightly possible that I don’t need to take my phone in with me every time I use the bathroom. And it’s probably a good idea to actually interact with my kids in addition to getting the perfect shot for Instagram.

Maybe, if I’m lucky, my kids will take up photography. Or at least look back on the photos I’ve taken and appreciate them. It’s possible that in a few short years they will have their own phones and will be telling me to go stand in front of some foggy woodland scene so they can post it somewhere. I certainly hope so. I’ll try not to be annoyed.

Texas, Ohio Fight Over Air Force One Where Lyndon B. Johnson Took Oath Of Office

By Jon Herskovitz

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan 15 (Reuters) – The foundation that backs the library for President Lyndon Baines Johnson is locking horns with the Air Force museum in Ohio over an Air Force One jet that Johnson admirers believe belongs in Texas.

The LBJ Foundation is seeking to have the modified Boeing 707 that came into service under President John F. Kennedy and in which Johnson took the oath of the presidency hours after Kennedy’s assassination, transported to Austin and put on display near the LBJ Presidential Library.

“It would mean so much and it would become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Texas,” said Tom Johnson, chairman emeritus of the LBJ Foundation.

Even though the plane served as the primary presidential jet from 1962 to 1972 – from Kennedy through Richard Nixon – the foundation believes it is inextricably linked to the Johnson presidency.

Along with the move and display at the LBJ library on the University of Texas campus, the foundation also wants to restore the interior of the plane, also known as Special Air Mission (SAM) 26000, to better reflect the state it was in when it was used as the primary presidential plane.

There is a separate Air Force One plane on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library in California, which is on loan from the U.S. Air Force.

The LBJ Foundation, which has identified sources of funding for the move, display and interior restoration, is hoping the Air Force will lend out this plane in a similar fashion.

“They have many, many spectacular planes at Dayton. We just want one of them,” said Johnson, who is not related to the 36th U.S. President.

The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, said the plane is staying in Ohio.

“The museum is not considering a donation or loan of SAM 26000 to the LBJ Library & Museum or to any other entity,” museum spokesman Rob Bardua said in an email.

The plane was used by U.S. presidents through 1992. The museum sees the plane that carried presidents, heads of state and other dignitaries as an important historic aircraft.

“It was built to indicate American air superiority to the world and was not uniquely identified to one president,” Bardua said.

The plane flew Nixon to China and the Soviet Union for historic meetings at the height of the Cold War. It was also used by former Secretary of State James Baker for talks with Iraqi leaders about removing their troops from Kuwait ahead of the 1991 Gulf War.

The plane is painted to reflect its exterior in 1963 and the interior is configured for its use in 1998, when it was delivered to the museum. (Reporting by Jon Herskovitz, editing by Scott Malone and Gunna Dickson)
