35 Reasons J.K. Rowling Should Never, Ever Leave Twitter

J.K. Rowling is the powerhouse behind the “Harry Potter” universe, and we love her for it. From the books to the films to the theme parks, you’d think a woman who has already given us so much couldn’t possibly give us any more.

But, au contraire, friends. Rowling’s Twitter presence has long been lauded, primarily for her ability to take down trolls and provide consistently humorous musings on the world.

Ahead of the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which first hit bookshelves back in 1997, we’ve decided to celebrate Mother Potter in the best way possible: Rounding up her most iconic tweets for our reading/retweeting pleasure. There are 35 of them. You’re welcome.

Her #relatable feelings of frustration that led to needing cake:

This classic response to a troll that does double duty as a song lyric:

These epic responses to/subtweets about trolls:

Her complete and utter vitriol toward President Donald Trump:

That time she wrote out “Expecto Patronum” for a fan’s tattoo:

When she’s frequently expressed her love for otters:

When she received a truly incredible mug for her birthday:

That time she served up some serious sass about women and sex (… and women everywhere started clapping):

When she admitted that killing all those people in the “Harry Potter” world was hard on her, too. Even Snape:

When she revealed the one thing that rivals Voldemort in terms of evilness — printers:

Those times she filled us in on the ups and downs of her writing life:

That time she said she doesn’t care if you think she’s a bitch:

When she referred to herself in the third person to declare that she loved the casting of a black Hermione in the “Cursed Child” play:

That time she said the phrase “penis hat”:

When she proved she’s ~ just like us ~:

J.K. Rowling ― never stop tweeting. Ever.

From June 1 to 30, HuffPost is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the very first “Harry Potter” book by reminiscing about all things Hogwarts. Accio childhood memories.

Trevor Noah Hails Twitter ‘King’ Trump, Plugs ‘Daily Show’ Presidential Tweet Library

If anyone doubts the awesome power of President Donald Trump’s tweets, look no further than his travel ban ― which is itself momentarily “banned” by the courts, “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah noted on Monday night.

As Noah points out, one of Trump’s tweets just helped convince the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit not to reinstate Trump’s ban on travel and immigration from six Muslim-majority countries.

The president’s Twitter timeline is so powerful, “it defeats an entire team of White House lawyers,” Noah observed. “All of them were like, ‘Law school!’ Trump was like, ‘140 characters.’”

Trump’s Twitter use also came back to haunt him when he tweeted that former FBI Director James Comey “better hope that there are no ‘tapes’” of their conversations, the “Daily Show” host remarked.

Some of Trump’s spokespeople say Trump’s tweets should be ignored ― but Noah says he has more respect for the president than that: “I take Donald Trump at his word when he tweets.”

In fact, the “Daily Show” is so impressed by the man “basically running the entire country with his thumbs” that it’s created a pop-up presidential library of Trump’s tweets, which will be on display at 3 West 57th Street in Manhattan for three days.

“Let’s just say a certain someone will be able to see it from the window of a certain tower,” Noah teased.

The Former And New Miss USA Both Wear Natural Hair, Twitter Reacts Accordingly

Deshauna Barber made a touching statement as she took one final walk as Miss USA in Las Vegas on Sunday night ― and she did it without saying a word.

The Army reserve officer looked stunning in a form-fitting yellow gown, but all eyes were on her hair, which she wore in its natural state. In a pre-recorded segment, Barber revealed that she wore her hair in honor of her mother, who recently died, AZ Central reported.

It didn’t take long for Twitter to send words of praise and support Barber’s way.

As if the moment weren’t inspiring enough, Barber passed the crown to Kara McCullough ― also from District of Columbia, also a black woman, also wearing her natural hair.

McCullough told Refinery29 she made the choice to reflect the traditional pageant’s changing and modernizing ideals. “I decided to embrace what made me feel comfortable, embrace what makes me feel the best and brightest onstage,” she said. “But also embrace what other people can relate to, so that typical, traditional sleek hair, big tease, not to say it’s gone out the window, but it’s transitioning a lot.”

The powerful visual of these two women sharing the special moment onstage garnered even more celebration on social media.

Tonight made history, indeed.

Nicki Minaj Offers To Pay Fans’ College Bills On Twitter

In one hour, Nicki Minaj committed to paying thousands of dollars to help more than a dozen students pay their bills.

After one fan asked the star for some assistance, Minaj launched an impromptu tuition-savings contest on Twitter late Saturday night.

Minaj was in the midst of tweeting about a contest in which she would fly the winner to hang out with her at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, when she got a response she likely didn’t expect.

The star was interested.

Within minutes, requests flooded her feed. Minaj responded to fans’ who asked for money to pay off loans and funds to afford books, housing and tuition. Minaj asked for proof that she could verify with various schools, so fans started tweeting copies of transcripts and bill statements.

Minaj ended the night about an hour later, saying she may make the same offer sometime in the future.

TMZ reported that as of Sunday, three fans confirmed they had received funds from Minaj.

Twitter Is Concerned Ryan Seacrest Is Coming For All Of Our Jobs

On Monday, Kelly Ripa announced that Ryan Seacrest would be her new “Live! with Kelly” co-host, replacing Michael Strahan after he left for “Good Morning America” in May of last year.

Seacrest is a surprising choice for co-host, only because he’s one of the busiest people in the media business today.

The former “American Idol” host is a producer on “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” hosts a radio show, is a staple on the on the red carpet during award season, and is ABC’s annual New Year’s Eve host since taking over duties from the late Dick Clark. If that wasn’t enough, the CW announced in January that it picked up a new scripted pilot from Ryan Seacrest Productions called “Insatiable,” which is, well, a good description of Seacrest.

Yes, the 42-year-old is an incredibly busy guy ― something that was not lost on Twitter users, who couldn’t help pointing out that Seacrest might have his hands full.

Trump Urges Twitter Followers To Read A Completely Blank Book

On Monday, at 8:13 a.m., President Donald Trump published a surprising tweet. Surprising for two reasons, in fact: Firstly, it recommended a book of “Reasons to Vote for Democrats” to his followers, and secondly, it recommended a book.

Had the president been hacked? What could account for such an uncharacteristic tweet?

Not to worry ― it all makes complete sense. Reasons to Vote for Democrats: A Comprehensive Guide by Michael J. Knowles is neither pro-Democrat nor, in the traditional sense, a book. It’s a 266-page volume filled with empty pages. (Get it? There are no reasons to vote for Democrats!)

Knowles, who brought out Reasons to Vote for Democrats in February, is hardly the first to use this old gag ― even in this election cycle. For example, back in November, Why Trump Deserves Trust, Respect and Admiration by David King became available on Amazon.

“This book is full of blank pages,” the description says. “Despite years of research, we could not find anything to say on this subject.”

The author includes a helpful hint for what to do with all the clean, unused pages inside: “Please feel free to use this book for notes.” Good idea! Here’s hoping the trees that were pulped for these joke books were not chopped down in vain.

Reasons to Vote for Democrats, despite being completely free of content, has been a top seller on Amazon for weeks. Thousands of consumers have snapped up $ 6 paperback copies, and the author, 26-year-old Knowles, was invited on “Fox and Friends” in March to discuss his creation.

Setting aside the president’s deliberate trolling of the Democratic Party ― of which a significant percentage of his constituents identify as members ― Trump’s ringing endorsement of a book without any words beyond the table of contents struck some as almost too on-the-nose, given his notorious inability to name any books he has read all the way through.

Knowing what we know about Trump’s reading habits, it’s little wonder he might define “reading enjoyment” as “not having to read any words” ― now we just have confirmation.

Fashion Store Calls This A ‘Chandelier Head Clip,’ And Twitter Isn’t Happy

A maang tikka, known to some as a tikli, is a traditional South Asian accessory typically worn by brides from the center part of their hair to the forehead, over the ajna chakra.

It symbolizes the bride’s third eye as well as the union between two people on a spiritual, physical and emotional level, according to BollywoodShaadis.com.

So when ASOS, a British-based fashion retailer, put one up for sale on its website and labeled it a “chandelier hair clip,” many people of South Asian descent were not OK.

South Asian and Hindu accessories have been the target of cultural appropriation for a while, but especially since the rise of trendy “festival wear.”

The bindi, for example, is typically worn by South Asian women to signify their marital status, to remind them of prayer or, like the maang tikka, mark the anja shakra. Today, some people wear it just to look cool at Coachella.

But ASOS’ apparent rebranding of the tikka was the last straw for many people.

Some people assumed the company was too lazy to learn the South Asian accessory’s real name. Others wanted ASOS to drop the “chandelier” nonsense and call it what it is.

“Dear @ASOS,” one Twitter user wrote. “If you really want to be a cultural appropriation enabler, the least you can do is call it a Tikka, not a chandelier hair clip!!”

Aisha Haque, a Bengali woman in London who goes by @ashlibob on Twitter, was one of the first people to call ASOS out on its “chandelier hair clip,” according to Globalnews.ca.

She told the Canadian news site that ASOS, much like many other fashion companies, gets away with appropriating a culture she holds dear.

“You can’t just blatantly take something from another culture and give no acknowledgment. That is highly offensive,” Haque told Globalnews.ca.

“These big companies get away with it again and again,” she added. “I’d like to tell people to start understanding what cultural appropriation is and that it’s very much okay to make noise when you see it happening.”

At the very least, ASOS appears to have noticed the chandelier backlash.

As of Thursday evening, the “Faux Pearl Chandelier Hair Clip” was no longer available on the ASOS website, but slightly similar products, including one named the “Orelia Semi Precious Festival Hair Tika” were.

ASOS did not immediately return The Huffington Post’s request for comment.

Twitter Users Skewer Donald Trump For Skipping The Signing Of Executive Orders

Donald Trump’s disappearing act from the Oval Office on Friday did not go unnoticed on Twitter.

After the president walked out without signing two executive orders on trade policies that he’d just promoted to the media, BuzzFeed editor Jesse McLaren reimagined the awkward incident as the closing credits from HBO’s political comedy “Veep.”

Twitter Turned An Old Photo Of Meryl Streep Into An Incredible Meme

The photo has inexplicably gone through a renaissance in the past few days and has become a Twitter meme. A meme that involves Streep yelling a song lyric.

Twitter accounts hijacked with 'Nazi' hashtags in Turkish

Twitter accounts hijacked with 'Nazi' hashtags in TurkishBy Eric Auchard FRANKFURT (Reuters) – A diplomatic spat between Turkey, the Netherlands and Germany spread online on Wednesday when a large number of Twitter accounts were hijacked and replaced with anti-Nazi messages in Turkish. The attacks, using the hashtags #Nazialmanya (NaziGermany) or #Nazihollanda (NaziHolland), took over accounts of high-profile CEOs, publishers, government agencies, politicians and also some ordinary Twitter users. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has accused the German and Dutch governments of Nazi-style tactics, drawing protests from both countries, after Turkish government ministers were barred from addressing political rallies there to boost his support among expatriate Turks.

Twitter Can’t Believe Rihanna Invented Punk In Latest Photo Shoot

After her appearance at Harvard University this week, where she became the institution’s Humanitarian of the Year, Rihanna’s latest photo shoot went live on Paper magazine Friday.

With a look that can properly be summed up as “bodega glam,” the shoot took place in New York in early February, and fans on social media were quick to voice support for the finished product in tones of awe.

Can you believe Rihanna invented punk?

It was a popular sentiment

Stylist Shannon Stokes, who worked alongside Farren Fucci, said her team took inspiration from the singer’s “budding acting career” ― she’s set to appear with Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway in the all-female “Ocean’s Eight.” The resulting imagery casts her “as a high fashion clerk in a bodega of the future.”

For those keeping track at home, Rihanna has also invented the practice of grocery shopping.

In her Harvard speech, Rihanna discussed her philosophy of charity as she accepted the honor for her work promoting healthcare and education in the Caribbean. The singer helped set up a state-of-the-art center for oncology and nuclear medicine and funds a scholarship program to help Caribbean students attending U.S. schools.

“All you need to do is help one person, expecting nothing in return,” Rihanna stated.

She just keeps giving.

Twitter Wishes Election Night Had Gone More Like The Oscars

Sunday night’s Oscars turned into a real doozy when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presented “La La Land” with the Best Picture award even though “Moonlight” was the real winer.

Beatty was apparently handed the wrong envelope offstage, and PricewaterhouseCoopers ― the company behind the ballot counting ― apologized for the disappointing error in a statement.

“We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture,” the statement read. “The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.”

Which got people on Twitter thinking: What if election night had gone the same way?

Twitter Users Roast FBI Over Its MS Paint-Style Holiday Tweet

The FBI’s “Happy Holidays” tweet brought plenty of seasonal cheer over the weekend, but maybe not in the way the agency intended.

Twitter users couldn’t resist poking fun at the law enforcement agency after it posted this MS-Paint-style snowman graphic Saturday alongside its festive message:

Dozens of tweeters piled in to claim that the bureau had committed a “graphic design crime.” One person even called for agents to “arrest themselves for this card.”

Some critics mockingly posted their own equally amateur-looking greetings pictures. Others used the post as an opportunity to attack the FBI over allegations that it had played a role in President-elect Donald Trump’s election win, which have resulted in a lawsuit against the agency.

Here are some of the most popular responses we’ve seen so far:

Mom Didn’t Sell Any Knitted Goods At Fair, So Twitter Bought It All

Twitter showed a man some love after he tweeted about his mom struggling to sell her knitted wares at a craft fair.

On Nov. 26, Martyn Hett of Manchester, England texted his mom, Figen, to see how she was doing. He tweeted out her heartbreaking response:

The 28-year-old then mentioned his mom had a Depop page, which is similar to Etsy, where people buy and sell homemade goods.

A friend of Hetts bought a glove creature from his mother’s Depop page:

And a few more people followed along and bought goodies as well:

Then, in the very best way possible, knit hit the fan:

Mama Figen even had to re-up on materials due to demand:

“She sews/knits for therapeutic reasons,” Hett told Buzzfeed News. “She’s a counselor and she believes that being creative is good for the soul – it’s advice she often gives to her clients. Since it went viral, she’s decided to donate money from her earnings to a local charity, Beacon Counselling.”

He also told Indy 100 that she’s getting requests from people who want her to make specific hearts to honor relatives who have passed.

In regards to the response, Hett thinks the whole thing is hilarious.

His mom, however, has decided to react in the most mom way possible:

She is sew cute!

Kanye West Goes on Delighted Twitter Rant About Met Gala ‘Best Dressed’ Honor: ‘It’s the Grammys of Style!’

A happy Kanye West Twitter rant? We never thought we’d see the day.

The rapper was so elated to read he and wife Kim Kardashian West were among the Met Gala‘s Best Dressed Couple according to Vogue, that he couldn’t help but publicly share the news.

Taking to his favorite social media app, Kanye wrote, “I’m really excited to get our first best dressed at the met … This Gala is like the Grammys of style!”

Like many other of the lavish evening’s guests, Kim and Kanye approached the Manus x Machina theme with sequins and sparkle. The couple both wore pieces designed by Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing, with Kim going “blingy sexy robot” in her form-fitting gown. Kanye was decidedly dressed down in ripped Fear of God denim (which go for $ 895) and an intricately embellished jacket — paired with an icy pair of blue contact lenses.

In the past, Kanye has made Vogue‘s best dressed list for the annual ball solo — even once included in a photograph with Kim strategically cropped out.

“Thank you Anna for the invite thank you to the whole Vogue team,” West continued on Twitter, before revealing that Kim’s look was the product of some scissor action. “Thank you Olivier for making 4 dresses for Kim to choose from which we chopped 2 in half and thank you for turning my personal jean jacket into a couture piece. Also to Kim’s hair and makeup Lorraine jewelry and the whole style squad at Balmain and the Yeezy team.”

Kim isn’t afraid to hack away at her designer duds, once crafting a co-ordinating crop and skirt from a Dior pink dress. We can’t quite pinpoint what parts of the reality star’s look were dissected, but can imagine the sartorial snipping was meant to show off Kim’s post-baby figure.

Nevertheless, Kanye said the pair had “fun with the ‘future’ theme.”

“It was a fun night all together,” he tweeted.

Among the night’s other perfect pairings? Gigi Hadid in custom Tommy Hilfiger with Zayn Malik in Versace, and Hannah Davis in Zuhair Murad Couture with Derek Jeter.

Do you think Kim and Kanye were the best dressed couple? Tell us in the comments.

Selena Gomez Rules #NYFW: Tracking Twitter, Instagram By the Numbers

New York Fashion Week — or #NYFW, to be more specific — has a reach far beyond the more than 61,000 who shared content on Instagram or Twitter. According to numbers gathered by Pixlee, from Sept. 10 to 15, conversations using #NYFW and #NYFW15 had reached 6.6 billion people across Twitter and Instagram. Instagram posts with those hashtags garnered 37 million likes, and on Saturday alone, the conversation reached 2.1 million people. Of submitted photos, 78.4 percent were on Instagram and 21.6 percent were on Twitter. And the top engagement? That went to @selenagomez, posting about “feeling downtown chic” to Instagram from Polo Ralph Lauren. Even though she said “#imnotamodel #tryinsohard,” she obviously is doing something right; the post has 1,520,829 likes, and counting. (Fellow poster @brooklynbeckham also posted from the venue, but his likes were “only” in the hundreds of thousands.)

Amy Schumer Denies She Has A ‘Blind Spot’ About Race On Twitter

Amy Schumer took to Twitter Sunday morning to defend the way she treats race in her comedy.

“I am a comic,” Schumer wrote. “I will joke about things you like and I will joke about things you aren’t comfortable with.”

The post appears to be a response to a Guardian article published early Sunday morning that said Schumer has “a shockingly large blind spot around race” despite her large body of feminist work.

From The Guardian:

“Schumer’s stand-up repeatedly delves into racial territory tactlessly and with no apparent larger point. Her standup special features jokes like “Nothing works 100% of the time, except Mexicans” and much of her character’s dumb slut persona is predicated on the fact that the men she sleeps with are people of colour. “I used to date Latino guys,” she says in an older stand-up routine. “Now I prefer consensual.”

Schumer’s response didn’t mention the Guardian article directly, but said: “You can call it a ‘blind spot for racism’ or ‘lazy’ but you are wrong.”

The Guardian isn’t the first to take issue with the way the comic approaches race. A Daily Dot article published last week made similar claims. Schumer also drew criticism for a joke she made about “Gone Girl” and Latinas while hosting the 2015 MTV Movie Awards in April.

After Meeting On Twitter, This Couple Is Live-Streaming Their Wedding On Periscope

Bryanna Mazzella and Kyle Harris met three years ago on Twitter. So it’s only fitting that they’re incorporating relatives and loved ones into their upcoming nuptials through Twitter’s very own live-streaming service, Periscope.

“We have a bunch of people in different countries and other states who can’t make it to the wedding, and we thought with all the live-streaming technology out now, it’s just a perfect way to let them be with us on our day,” Harris told HuffPost Live on Wednesday. “I just think it’s a great tool to have.”

Having accumulated an online following, the couple can also use Periscope to invite fans from Twitter and Instagram to witness their vows at no cost.

“Just to have our family and friends from other places to be able to be with us, at least just in spirit and vibe, is amazing for us,” said Mazzella.

Twitchhiker: How One Man Travelled the World by Twitter

Twitchhiker: How One Man Travelled the World by Twitter

One man’s attempt to travel the globe in 30 days, depending solely on the generosity of strangers through Twitter "There were five rules of Twitchhiker. I can only accept offers of travel and accommodation from people on Twitter. I can’t make any travel plans further than three days in advance. I can only spend money on food, drink and anything that might fit in my suitcase. If there is more than one offer, I choose which I take. If there is only one, I have to take it within 48 hours. If I am unable to find a way to move on from a location within 48 hours, the challenge is over and I go home. " Bored in the bread aisle of the supermarket one day, Paul Smith wondered how far he could get around the world in 30 days through the goodwill of users of social networking site Twitter. At the mercy of these rules, he set his sights on New Zealand–the opposite point on the planet to his home in Newcastle, England. All he had to do next was explain the idea to his new wife. In an adventure wrapped in nonsense, he traveled by road, boat, plane, and train; slept in five-star luxury and on no-star floors; schmoozed with Hollywood A-listers; and was humbled by the generosity of the thousands who followed his journey and determined its course.
