Bridget Foley’s Diary: Vera Gives Back

In Washington, two morons have worked hard to delay or dilute via an amendment approving ongoing funding of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund for first responders. In New York, two entities are joining ranks to do something nice for people who dedicate their lives to the protection of others.
Global Goddess of Bridal Vera Wang is pairing with Brides Across America, an organization that gifts bridal gowns and underwrites weddings for U.S. troops and, more recently, first responders.
Wang got involved as part of the observance of a major brand milestone. “2019…celebrating our 30th year in business! Who’d of thunk it?!” she mused. The approaching anniversary led her to reflect on more than her own place in fashion. “Milestones also make us grateful for all the opportunities that have come our way,” she said. “Given the world we live in, with all of its complexities and challenges, it is so joyful for me to celebrate my anniversary by celebrating people who have given their lives for us. I look forward to dressing 10 couples on their happiest of days.”
Brides Across America has been gifting gowns and weddings to military personnel since it was founded in 2008 by chief executive officer Heidi Janson.

Disney Puts Fashionable Spin on Mouse Ears With Help of Vera Wang, Heidi Klum

HEAD GEAR: A new collection of designer Mickey and Minnie Mouse ears, featuring work with Vera Wang, Heidi Klum and Cupcakes and Cashmere, among other designers, artists and brands is set to begin rolling out later this month.
It’s a new spin on a beloved souvenir for kids and adults visiting Disney’s parks. The limited-edition headband ears will be sold at the Disneyland Resort in California, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disney’s online shop. Harveys’ collaboration with Disney will be the first, launching May 24.
Disney will continue to release new designs on a monthly basis as part of a multiyear program.
“We were intentionally broad with the collaborators that we reached out to for this campaign,” said Lisa Baldzicki, vice president of merchandise and product development for Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “We wanted to make sure this campaign was special and different from everything we’ve done.”
The company cast a wide net, tapping talent that is both emerging and heritage for creations that span traditional to high fashion.

Vera Wang to Introduce Bridal Jewelry With Chow Tai Fook

SHANGHAI — Bridal doyenne Vera Wang is expanding her universe again, linking up this time with Hong Kong-headquartered Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group to produce a fine jewelry collection catering to the modern Chinese bride.
“Vera Wang Love” will debut on Oct. 19 in Chow Tai Fook Shanghai stores before expanding to other key cities including Beijing, Chengdu and Hong Kong. It builds on top of her existing offerings in the space via “Simply Vera Vera Wang” jewelry, as well as deals for homeware, and her core ready-to-wear and gowns business.
The collection will span 18-karat gold and platinum engagement rings, wedding bands and fine fashion jewelry, with a starting price point of about $ 400.
Traditionally speaking, gold and jade usually adorn brides in China, but the two sides said couples in greater numbers are starting to “incorporate diamond jewelry into traditional engagements.”
Wang has found a powerful partner in Chow Tai Fook, one of the world’s largest jewelers with more than 2,600 points of sale across China. The group’s other brands include Chow Tai Fook T Mark, Hearts on Fire, Monologue and SoinLove.
Vera Wang counts three boutiques in mainland China — in Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu.

Vera Wang, Olivier Rousteing, Anna Sui, Carol Lim, Humberto Leon and Moncler to Be Honored at FGI’s Night of Stars

ANOTHER CONSTELLATION: Vera Wang will lead this year’s Fashion Group International’s Night of Stars as the Superstar award winner.
Achieving such status has been 28 years in the making for Wang, who started a bridalwear company in 1990 after creating her own wedding gown the year before. The New Yorker has since layered ready-to-wear, accessories, footwear and a myriad of other products, including nonfashion ones.
Three Fashion Star awards will also be given to Balmain’s creative director Olivier Rousteing, the New York-based designer Anna Sui and the creative team of Carol Lim and Humberto Leon at the Oct. 25 gala. In addition to starting Opening Ceremony, Lim and Leon are creative directors at Kenzo.
Like many other industries, fashion is being reenvisoned, and the theme of this year’s gala is in line with that ideology. Margaret Hayes, FGI’s president and chief executive officer, said, “The theme of this year’s celebration is ‘Design Reimagined.’ It highlights those who see the world the way it is; who listen, change the conversation and reimagine what is to what should be, bringing new ideas and meaning to the worlds of design, beauty, culture, philanthropy and the human condition.”
Other honorees will include Moncler for Luxury Lifestyle and Frédéric

Peggy Eskenasi Named President of Vera Wang Group

CHANGES AT WANG: Peggy Eskenasi, a former Nine West Holdings Inc. and Kohl’s executive, has been named president of Vera Wang Group. She succeeds Veronique Gabai-Pinsky who has been in the role since January 2016.
According to a Wang spokeswoman, Gabai-Pinksy resigned for personal reasons. Neither she, Wang nor Eskenasi were available for comment Friday.

Eskenasi had been executive chairwoman of Nine West Holdings, Inc. from September 2014 to May 2016. Vera Wang Suits Up Eagles Cheerleaders for Super Bowl Showdown With Patriots

DESIGNER SIDELINES: While some advertisers will be forking over $ 5 million for 30-second Super Bowl commercials, Vera Wang will be getting some air time for free.
The Philadelphia Eagles’ cheerleaders will be rallying for Nick Foles and the rest of the team wearing uniforms created by the New York designer. In 2003, Wang became the first big-name designer to suit up a NFL cheerleading squad. No slouch in the athletic department, Wang herself was a competitive skater before she segued into fashion. Through the years, Wang has suited up all sorts of elite athletes — Nancy Kerrigan, Michelle Kwan and Evan Lysacek among them. At this month’s Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, the undefeated U.S. figure skater Nathan Chen will hit the ice wearing costumes designed by Wang. “I have always been an athlete, a supporter of so many disciplines, a true fan, and very proud and humbled by having dressed so many athletes in competition and for many of their weddings and red carpet moments!‎” she said.
Considering 111 million tuned in for last year’s Super Bowl, Wang’s uniforms are set to be seen worldwide. “Whenever one designs for athletes, or performers, being viewed from 360-degree angles becomes imperative. But TV adds

BIG IN CHINA: Vera Wang and Ron Perelman were among the honorees at the China Institute’s annual Blue Cloud gala Thursday night.
The gathering at Cipriani’s lower Broadway location in the Cunard Building was meant to center on the Institute’s commitment to advancing understanding and deepening trust between China and the U.S. Ning Yuan, chairman and president of China Construction America, and Robert Hong Xiao, chief executive officer of Perfect World Co. Ltd. were also honored, as well as New York Gov. Andrew Coumo, who wasn’t able to attend the black tie dinner.
Beforehand, China Institute chairman Chien Chung Pei, better known as “Didi,” said of the honorees, “They share the spirit and mission of China Institute to shape positive and strong U.S.-China relations through education, culture and business.”
Derek Lam also turned up to support Wang. She later told the crowd how growing up in the U.S., her parents Cheng Ching and Florence Wang encouraged her to embrace American culture, never allowing her to forget her Chinese heritage. That delicate balance was what provided her and her brother “with such a unique view of the world and a sincere appreciation for both cultures,” she said.

First Nighter: Margulies’s ‘Dinner With Friends’ Served Piping Hot; ‘Vera,’ An Oscar Wilde Oddity

Because many of us haven’t trusted the Pulitzer Prize since 1962 when Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was nixed by the powers there, whatever lands the award from year to year can receive an I’ll-be-the-judge-of-that critical response.

I suppose that’s my way of saying I wasn’t bowled over by Donald Margulies’s Dinner With Friends win in 2000. Come to think of it, the decision could have been the Pulitzer deciders’ way of accepting their judges’ choice that go-round as compensation for the institute’s not honoring The Model Apartment, the playwright’s superb 1998 play, stunningly revived last year by Primary Stages.

(There’s a prominent precedent: Albee’s 1967 win for A Delicate Balance was viewed, at least in part, as a make-up nod for the 1962 gaffe.)

But don’t get me wrong. While I’m not convinced Dinner With Friends is a duh!-but-of-course prizewinner, I’m glad to say it’s a piece of very fine writing. The evidence is the Roundabout’s flawless revival at the Laura Pels, directed by Pam McKinnon (who has the recent Who’s Afraid….? revival to her credit), and acted by Jeremy Shamos, Marin Hinkle, Darren Pettie and Heather Burns.

Getting back to the Pulitzer voters, maybe they favored Margulies for his depiction of two contemporary middle-class marriages. Perhaps they reasoned the drama had been, and would be, seen by many middle-class marrieds who’d find themselves so well observed in it.

Certainly, Margulies–on record as cribbing from his own marriage to a general practitioner–takes his characters’ temperature with compelling accuracy. In the first of his two acts, the ostensibly blissful Gabe (Shamos) and Karen (Hinkle) are hosting good pal Beth (Burns) who confides in their well-appointed Connecticut kitchen (Allen Moyer’s design) that husband Tom (Pettie) is leaving her for another woman. After returning home to confront the admittedly philandering Tom, Beth so agitates him when she admits having told Karen and Gabe that he races over to give them his side of the break-up.

Margulies begins his second act flashing back to the summer some 12 years earlier when, at their Martha’s Vineyard summer retreat (Moyer keeping up the good work), Gabe and Karen rather awkwardly reintroduce Beth and Tom, who’d disliked each other since their hosts’ wedding. That four-way exchange–infused with comic touches that always come easily to Margulies–is followed by a scene in which Karen and Beth discuss the unfolding events, then a scene in which Gabe and Tom do the same and, finally, a one-on-one bedroom wrangle between Gabe and Karen.

Am I going back on my earlier Pulitzer-resistant stance by saying it would be hard to question the wisdom with which Margulies writes about the somehow sturdy Gabe-Karen marriage and the foundering Tom-Beth alliance, which, when ended, allows them to enter into sound second marriages? Not only do I appreciate his views there, but I also admire (maybe even more so) Margulies’s nuanced understanding the dynamics of friendships. He’s put “Dinner” is his title, and he plays with it by devoting two scenes to Karen and Gabe preparing food with great enthusiasm, as well as having the pair offer Tom something to munch on when he barges in.

But Margulies has also inserted “Friends” in his title, and in both the lengthy Karen-Beth and Gabe-Tom confrontations, he explores the subtle things between friends that, if not confronted, can become big things. His perceptions about the unconscious slights friends can commit, often on an consistent basis, are beautifully jarring. What Beth observes about Karen and then Tom observes about Gabe and that then propels Karen and Tom into their own marital considerations is so profound that, yes, I don’t begrudge that Pulitzer.

There’ll be no speculating here on how actors and directors approach a Pulitzer play. It’s highly unlikely that director MacKinnon thought differently about how she’d treat Dinner With Friends, which did win, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which didn’t. The very thought is laughable. And notice that both works dwell on two unions in shaky shape.

Actors undoubtedly think about how best to play the role they’ve won. Shamos, Hinkle, Pettie and Burns–as guided by MacKinnon–know exactly what to do. Each of them has acquired the kind of resumé that marks them as reliable. Theirs is a reliability that stems from fitting the parts they play as if the parts were written about and for them.

So, renewed congratulations to Margulies on his Pulitzer. More than that, congratulations, prize or no prize, on presenting so believably the infinite complexities of marriages and friendships. These are the foundations on which are built so many of our daily lives.

**************************************************************************************************

N. B.: The list of Oscar Wilde’s plays usually includes only five–Lady Windermere’s Fan, Salomé, An Ideal Husband, A Woman of No Importance and The Importance of Being Earnest. Theatergoers familiar with them may be surprised to learn that’s not the complete list. In 1883, his early play-Vera, or The Nihilists, about the eponymous woman’s throwing her lot in with revolutionaries (one of whom is a royal)–had its first production in New York City.

It’s not a very good play. Actually, it’s quite bad, which explains its being little discussed in polite society. It can be seen now, though. True Wilde completists can look at it–and may want to–in the Femme Fatale Theater production at HERE, the first on these shores in 131 years. By their own admission, director-designers Stephen Gribbin and Robert Ribar have tinkered with it but haven’t apparently improved the hard-boiled melodramatics. Nor does the all-male cast help.

Among the very few hoped-for epigrammatic remarks for which Wilde is still revered are “Nothing is impossible in prison but reform,” “Indifference is the revenge life takes on mediocrities” and “Experience is merely the name men give their mistakes.”

Call this Vera an experience.

Boy Reportedly Suspended For Wearing Vera Bradley Purse To School

Skylar Davis, a 13-year-old Kansas boy, was suspended from school. Depending on whose story you believe, it was either for cursing, or for “pursing.”

That is, carrying a purse with him to class.

Davis told KCTV5 that the purse, styled by Vera Bradley, helps him express himself. Besides, he says, “everyone else can wear [a purse], so I wear it as well.”

But the school’s assistant principal, who suspended Davis on Wednesday after he refused to remove the purse, doesn’t see it that way. KTNV reports he’d been wearing the bag since August, when the new school term started.

Leslie Willis, Davis’s mom, says she doesn’t understand why this is an issue, telling KCTV the student handbook makes no mention of purses. She added that she’s supportive of her son, and the choices he makes.

In March of 2012, a high schooler in Virginia faced a three-day suspension for refusing to take off a pair of high heels he was wearing. Administrators in that case argued his shoes were a disruption, while the student didn’t believe he was bothering anyone.

In Davis’s case, the rationale for his suspension seems a bit more murky. A request for comment from The Huffington Post was not immediately returned, though Superintendent Dan Blome later told KCTV5 junior high students have never been allowed to bring their bags into core classes.

KCTV5 also reports Davis returned to school Thursday afternoon, and that in a written statement to the station, Willis claims administrators are now saying the teenager was suspended for “foul language,” not “refusing to take off his purse.”
