Star Wars: Did Snoke Want Luke Skywalker to Join Him Instead of Kylo Ren?

The ever-mysterious Snoke got a rare moment in the spotlight thanks to Star Wars: Age of Resistance – Supreme Leader Snoke #1 by writer Tom Taylor and artist Leonard Kirk, and the issue implies that Snoke’s master plan originally involved recruiting Luke Skywalker instead of Kylo Ren.

Warning: full spoilers ahead!

The one-issue story takes place before the events of The Force Awakens and sees Snoke travel to Dagobah to train his apprentice, Kylo Ren. As they approach the same Force cave Luke once visited in Empire Strikes Back, Snoke refers to Luke as “one of the most formidable Jedi,” which prompts an annoyed Kylo Ren to ask Snoke why he speaks of Luke with such respect.

The Knights of Ren Will Be In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

The Knights of Ren, first teased in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, will make a full appearance in Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.

As revealed in a new preview from Vanity Fair, the Knights of Ren have arrived on the scene for the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga. While the preview goes into no depth about why they have returned or how they’ll be woven into the plot, a single behind-the-scenes photograph shows director J.J. Abrams and stunt coordinated Eunice Huthart offering instruction to a team of six actors dressed in Knights of Ren costumes.

The photo’s caption describes them as “elite fearsome enforcers of Kylo Ren’s dark will”. The photo itself gives us a much better look at the knights than in their rain-soaked flashback from Episode VII; they wield a variety of weapons, including axes, swords, and mauls, and their armour designs appear to pull from many different sources of inspiration; one wears a helmet that looks a little Clone Trooper-like, while another is almost Shogun-style.

Obsidian had big plans for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3, and although the game never saw the light of day, one of its writers has given us a look into what could have been for this planned next entry in the beloved KOTOR series.

At Reboot Develop, VG247 spoke to lead writer and designer for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and asked him if Obsidian had ever started work on a story for Knights of the Old Republic 3.

Avellone confirmed that work was underway, as the team always envisioned the KOTOR story to be a trilogy.

“When we finished the second one we were all trying to restore our lives back to sanity,” Avellone remembers. “We did start working on the third game pitch, because we always imagined the trilogy. Even when working on the second game, we

Mark Hamill Says His ‘Final Chapter’ of Star Wars Will Be ‘Bittersweet’ Without Carrie Fisher

Mark Hamill is paying tribute to Carrie Fisher before his return to Star Wars.

The 66-year-old actor Tweeted on Sunday about his return to the franchise and shared some pictures of his time with Fisher in the previous movies. The two starred as twins Luke and Leia through 5 previous Star Wars films.

“It’s bittersweet facing my final chapter without her-She is simply irreplaceable,” he wrote. “I’m finding solace in the fact that she won’t BE replaced & would love the worldwide outpouring of affection from those who loved her when they heard the news.”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

On Friday, Disney and Lucasfilm revealed the official cast list for the ninth trip to a galaxy far, far away and it contained one major surprise: Fisher is back as Leia, despite her shocking death in 2016.

According to the studio’s online announcement, production on the newest Star Wars adventure is expected to commence on Aug. 1, and Fisher is among the listed cast members returning for the film, thanks to some unused footage shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Returning director J.J. Abrams, who co-wrote the script for Episode IX alongside Chris Terrio, said in a statement, “We desperately loved Carrie Fisher. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.”

Fisher died December, 2016 at age 60 of a cardiac arrest.

Adam Driver Had No Problem with That Shirtless Scene in Star Wars: The Last Jedi: ‘He Knew He Looked Good’

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for those who have NOT yet seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Proceed with caution!

After 40 years of Star Wars films, the franchise’s loyal fanbase have come to expect and rely on seeing certain elements in each new film. Things like: lightsaber battles, The Force, cute creatures, Droids, etc.

One of the scenes that fans did not expect to see in Star Wars: The Last Jedi is what writer/director Rian Johnson calls its “beefcake” moment. i.e. when, during one of their surprisingly intimate, Force-enhanced, mind-over-matter-time-and-space conversations, Adam Driver‘s Kylo Ren surprises Daisy Ridley‘s Rey by appearing shirtless.

Rey’s startled reaction — a request that he cover himself with a towel or something — is as appropriate as it is hilarious, for the characters and the audience. But how did we get here, exactly? PEOPLE recently caught up with Johnson to ask him how that scene came to be and whether or not Driver was shy about that “beefcake” moment.

“It’s all about those Force connection scenes,” Johnson says. “The keyword being intimacy. And the idea that this was a way to just, why not step that up? The idea that, what’s even more uncomfortable having a conversation face to face with a person you don’t want to, is if they’re half-naked during it, while you’re having to do it. And so it was just another way of kind of disrobing Kylo literally and figuratively a little bit more, and pushing that sense of these conversations becoming increasingly more intimate.”

Not to mention the fact that by this point during filming, Driver’s physique was particularly photogenic.

“Adam looks so damn good because he’d been training hardcore for the past six months for those fight scenes. I’m like, ‘Eh. He looks so good. We should put him up there.’ ”

And how did Driver feel about his beefcake moment? Was he shy about it?

“No, no, he’s good. He’s great,” assures Johnson. “He knew he looked good.”

Star Wars: Gwendoline Christie on Going ‘Deeper’ with Captain Phasma in The Last Jedi

Captain Phasma may finally get to show why she’s the shiniest of Stormtroopers in The Last Jedi.

The character is back with a vengeance in Episode VIII and literally ready to fight. Phasma’s signature armor “was redesigned and made for movement,” says Gwendoline Christie, the 6-foot-3 Game of Thrones knight who has a gift for playing towering fighters. “It has been completely made-to-measure for me, and every part of my body, to make it as flexible as possible.”

Watch our full Star Wars: The Last Jedi special, streaming now on PeopleTV! Download the PeopleTV app on your favorite device or go to PEOPLE.com/peopletv.

That change is already clear in The Last Jedi scenes of Phasma’s rematch with her nemesis Finn (John Boyega), who forced her to shut down the shields to Starkiller Base near the end of The Force Awakens. Phasma moves fast and fierce.

But this time, Christie hints that the audience will see more of what’s under all that chrome in a “deeper” side of Phasma (could the character simply be a misunderstood phantom menace?).

“The dark side has very little humanity and empathy, so I’m looking forward to seeing the human ,” she says.

Will we see the actual human in Phasma, with Christie unmasked on screen? That’s difficult to see since always in motion the future is.

But for more clues to Episode VIII, pick up PEOPLE’s new special issue Star Wars: The Ultimate Guide to The Last Jedi (on newsstands now) and watch the exclusive PeopleTV special.

The Last Jedi is now in theaters.

Out of This World: Cast Sparkles on the Red Carpet at Star Wars: The Last Jedi Premiere

There’s no dark side to this red carpet.

The ladies of Star Wars: The Last Jedi came out in full force for the movie’s world premiere at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Saturday, dazzling in looks inspired by the beloved series.

Daisy Ridley, who again plays Rey in the latest installment, took the celestial theme literally, donning a dark strapless Monse dress adored with sequins and white star embellishments. Starting at the thigh, the 25-year-old’s floor-length dress became fringe — which showed off glimpses of her legs and strappy metallic heels as she made her way into the screening.

And because Lupita Nyong’o voices the animated Maz Kanata, the actress took full advantage of showing her face — and her legs! — at the movie’s premiere. The Oscar-winner turned heads in a seafoam green dress by Halpern. The strapless number featured a high slit that flaunted her frame — and a touch of purple lipstick sealed the deal.

Billie Lourd was a can’t-miss in metallic, donning a sleeveless silver gown on the red carpet. Her hair was styled in an elaborate up-do, reminiscent of a look her late mother Carrie Fisher wore in The Force Awakens.

Her turn in The Last Jedi marks the final appearance in the iconic franchise for Fisher, who wrapped filming for the movie last year prior to her December 2016 death. Lourd, who plays Lieutenant Connix, walked the red carpet alongside her father, Hollywood talent agent Bryan Lourd.

Laura Dern traded her character’s purple hair for her signature blonde locks at the premiere. The new addition to the Star Wars family stepped out in a strapless black lace dress.

Gwendoline Christie didn’t let her 6’3″ frame stop her from rocking some beige heels along with her Gucci gown. The silver dress with long-sleeves featured a high slit for Captain Phasma to give a peek of what’s under her armor.

The eighth Star Wars installment also sees the return of Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson and Andy Serkis.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters Dec. 15.

Christian Louboutin Reunites With Disney for ‘Star Wars’ Shoe Designs

Christian Louboutin and Disney are making magic once again. Following 2012’s reinterpretation of the “Cinderella” slipper and 2014’s “Maleficent” shoe, Louboutin has reunited with Walt Disney Studios to create a showpiece and a set of shoe designs for the release of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
A fan of the sci-fi franchise since the beginning, Louboutin created a pair of shoes for each of the film’s four female leads: Rey (Daisy Ridley), Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern), Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) and Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran). The commemorative styles are to debut along with the showpiece shoe on Saturday at the Los Angeles premiere of the latest episode.
The showpiece, a collaboration between Louboutin and Industrial Light and Magic (the visual effects studio founded by George Lucas), incorporates Louboutin’s six-inch Ballerina Ultima heel. The display will feature a hyper-realistic holographic installation and will be guarded by a set of Praetorian Guard members on the red carpet of the premiere.

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

Are the Valérian Comics Really a Big Influence on Star Wars?

If you’re a Luc Besson fan, you’ve likely seen at least one of the flashy trailers for his latest movie, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Like many big-budget movies these days, Valerian is based on a comic. If the Valérian and Laureline comics don’t ring a bell, that’s okay: you’re not alone in not knowing about the French source material.

The thing is that while the trailers for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets may look like a colourful Star Wars prequel rip-off, the reality is that the Valérian and Laureline comics were birthed a decade before the original Star Wars movie hit the big screen in 1977.

There’s been a lot of discussion about just how much of an influence Valérian was on Star Wars. It’s a controversial topic because though Star Wars creator George Lucas acknowledged many influences for his juggernaut sci-fi creation – including Flash Gordon, Toshirô Mifune, Akira Kurosawa, mythological heroes, old series and even comics – Valérian has never been mentioned. No one else who’s worked on the Star Wars movies seems to have listed the preceding adventures of Valérian as an influence, either.

We needed this a long time ago in a galaxy not so far, far away.

You don’t need to be the sharpest tool in the shed to see this is a perfect union. One’s called “Star Wars”; the other is called “All Star.” It practically writes itself!

Plus, with the mashup style, it’s like everyone gets a “Solo.” (Not just you, Han.)

Even if you think this whole thing is kind of dumb, it’d never have a finger and a thumb in the shape of an L on its forehead. How can it when Yoda is singing songs from the ‘90s?

It’s like a welcome change to fuel you through the week.

Yep. What a concept. We could use a little fuel ourselves and we could all use a little channnnggggeeeee!!!!

Why Star Wars Rebels Won’t End with Rogue One’s Battle of Scarif

While we know at least a couple of Star Wars Rebels characters were present for the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Rebels co-creator Dave Filoni cautions that we shouldn’t expect to see the animated series tackle a re-telling of the events of that film from a different perspective in the final season.

An exciting inclusion in Rogue One for fans was seeing elements from Star Wars Rebels make it into the film. Chopper makes an onscreen appearance, while a page for “General Syndulla” lets us know that Hera is on the Rebel base on Yavin right before the Battle of Scarif – and we then see the Rebels ship, the Ghost, take part in that battle.

The Star Wars Rebels: Season 4 premiere was shown at Star Wars Celebration Orlando several months before its debut on TV. This review won’t go into major spoilers, but will mention basic plot points and one returning character revealed to the public in the Season 4 trailer.

Knowing Star Wars Rebels: Season 4 will be the final year of the show obviously makes a big difference, as suddenly the stakes are higher and it makes every episode more meaningful. And while I would expect there might be a little diversion here or there, it feels like we should expect much more of a focus on big events in Season 4, especially given Dave Filoni says this will be the most serialized season they’ve done.

Your Favorite Female ‘Star Wars’ Heroes Finally Get Their Own Series

Star Wars” fans, this is the series you’re looking for.

It should’ve happened a long time ago, in a galaxy not so far, far away, but finally your favorite female “Star Wars” heroes are getting their own series, “Star Wars: Forces of Destiny.”

The new animated shorts will “focus on untold stories of everyday heroism that shape the destinies of Rey, Jyn Erso, Sabine Wren, Princess Leia, Ahsoka Tano and others.”

Oh, the most exciting part? Actors from the films are coming back to voice their roles.

Daisy Ridley will voice Rey, Felicity Jones will voice Jyn Erso, and even Lupita Nyong’o is coming back as Maz Kanata, serving as the show’s narrator. After the death of Carrie Fisher, Princess Leia will reportedly be voiced by Shelley Young.

Thankfully, unlike Unkar Plutt from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” Disney isn’t trying to be cheap with anyone. The series is getting books, apparel, action figures, and even a TV special. This is a welcome sign after the debacle surrounding the noticeable lack of Rey toys around the release of “The Force Awakens.”

(What the heck was up with that? Rey is a baller. And BB-8 is a baller, too, for other reasons … because BB-8 looks like a ball.)

Also exciting, the series will remain “true to the ‘Star Wars’ canon, showing how choices both big and small ultimately shape the destinies of beloved characters.”

That means we may even learn some secrets about the characters’ pasts. It’s unlikely the series is going to reveal anything major ― like the big mystery about Rey’s parents. But, Holy Nerf Herder! What if it does reveal the big mystery about Rey’s parents?

“’Star Wars: Forces of Destiny’ is for anyone who has been inspired by Leia’s heroism, Rey’s courage, or Ahsoka’s tenacity,” Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, in a statement. “We’re thrilled that so many of the original actors are reprising their roles in these shorts, which capture the small moments and everyday decisions that shape who these characters are.”

Based on that information, it looks like we’re just getting minor reveals about these characters, but we’ll take what we can get.

The two-to-three-minute shorts will be available on Disney’s YouTube channel in July. A two-part TV special featuring eight more episodes will air on the Disney Channel this fall.

Until then, may the “Forces” be with you.

Star Wars: Episode 9 May Use Recent Carrie Fisher Footage

Todd Fisher, Carrie Fisher’s brother, says that the late actress will make an appearance in Star Wars: Episode IX.

Fisher told New York Daily News that the family has granted Disney the rights to utilize recent footage of Carrie for the last movie. The outlet additionally reports that CGI will not be used for her appearance.

He explained that in a conversation with Carrie’s daughter, Billie Lourd, they came to the conclusion that Carrie was too large a part of the franchise to not feature in the finale.

“She’s as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi Wan — when the saber cuts him down he becomes more powerful. I feel like that’s what’s happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue,” Fisher said.

‘Star Wars’ Is Pretty Much Happening In Real Life Because Beyoncé Is Pregnant With Twins

It was Oscar Wilde who said, “Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” And right now, the basic plot of “Star Wars” is pretty much happening in real life because Donald Trump is president and Beyoncé is pregnant with twins.

 Look, it just works:

It's Star Wars, people!

Star Wars Rebels: “Trials of the Darksaber” Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

What a wonderful episode.

What was so notable about “Trials of the Darksaber” was how incredibly focused it was. Clips and images made it clear the episode would include Sabine training to use the weapon in the title, but I’m guessing I’m not alone in presuming something else would occur to make it more traditionally “action-packed” – that Sabine, Kanan and Ezra would encounter some Imperials or creatures or bounty hunters they’d need to fight and she’d prove herself in this manner. Instead, the story never moved beyond her training and was so much better and more powerful because of that. We didn’t need any other foes this week because this was all about Sabine’s own internal battle.

Campus Wars

Campus Wars

At the same time that the dangerous war was being fought in the jungles of Vietnam, Campus Wars were being fought in the United States by antiwar protesters. Kenneth J. Heineman found that the campus peace campaign was first spurred at state universities rather than at the big-name colleges. His useful book examines the outside forces, like military contracts and local communities, that led to antiwar protests on campus.”-Herbert Mitgang, The New York Times’shedding light on the drastic change in the social and cultural roles of campus life, Campus Wars looks at the way in which the campus peace campaign took hold and became a national movement.”-History Today “Heineman’s prodigious research in a variety of sources allows him to deal with matters of class, gender, and religion, as well as ideology. He convincingly demonstrates that, just as state universities represented the heartland of America, so their student protest movements illustrated the real depth of the anguish over US involvement in Vietnam. Highly recommended.”-Choice “Represents an enormous amount of labor and fills many gaps in our knowledge of the anti-war movement and the student left.”-Irwin Unger, author of These United States The 1960s left us with some striking images of American universities: Berkeley activists orating about free speech atop a surrounded police car; Harvard SDSers waylaying then-Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara; Columbia student radicals occupying campus buildings; and black militant Cornell students brandishing rifles, to name just a few. Tellingly, the most powerful and notorious image of campus protest is that of a teenage runaway, arms outstretched in anguish, kneeling beside the bloodied corpse of Jeff Miller at Kent State University. While much attention has been paid to the role of elite schools in fomenting student radicalism, it was actually at state institutions, such as Kent State, Michigan State, SUNY, and Penn State, where anti-Vietnam war protest blossomed. ‘Star Wars’ Team Grappling With How Leia Will Live On After Carrie Fisher’s Death

In the wake of Carrie Fisher’s death, the team responsible for future “Star Wars” projects is reportedly reconsidering the place of her character, Leia Organa, in the franchise’s ever-expanding universe, according to The Hollywood Reporter

Fisher, who first played the iconic princess in 1977, brought Leia back to the big screen as a general in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in 2015. The actress has apparently already filmed her scenes for the second installment in the latest trilogy, but was rumored to have an even larger role in the following film.

Now, a “Star Wars” “braintrust,” including “Episode VIII” director Rian Johnson, “Episode IX” director Colin Trevorrow and Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy, has convened to decide how Leia will live on after Fisher’s death. Trevorrow is set to arrive in Los Angeles for a meeting about the issue next week.

The team is reportedly concerned with two key scenes featuring Fisher that would bring her character and the film’s plot full circle: a much belated reunion between Leia and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and a faceoff with her son Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), who killed his father and her lover, Han Solo, in “The Force Awakens.”

Shooting for “Star Wars: Episode IX” isn’t scheduled to begin until early 2018, so until then, those at the helm are pursuing a variety of options on how to proceed. Resurrecting Fisher with CGI effects is apparently one alternative in play, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Technological advances have allowed for actors like the late Peter Cushing to return to the screen in the latest “Star Wars” offering, “Rogue One,” so Fisher could continue to have a similar presence, however limited, in future films.

The braintrust is also reportedly discussing writing the character out all together and reshooting certain scenes to lay the groundwork for her eventual exit from the franchise.

Whatever they decide, those responsible are not only grappling with the character’s fate, but also with the very real grief of losing a longtime friend of the “Star Wars” universe.

“People are still deeply mourning Carrie’s death over there,” a “Star Wars” source told The Hollywood Reporter.

The only silver lining here is that the the team appears to have enough time to appropriately honor Fisher’s legacy and craft a satisfying conclusion to her character before Leia says her final goodbye.

“Star Wars: Episode VIII” hits theaters Dec. 15, 2017.

Carrie Fisher Played One Of The Most Powerful Beings In The ‘Star Wars’ Universe

When you dissect all the scenes and story angles involving Princess Leia, you come away believing that Carrie Fisher’s character may have been one of the most powerful beings in all of “Star Wars.”

This was an ambassador with the ability to use words and negotiations to shift the political tides of an entire galaxy. As a revolutionary, she inspired the rebels to act against a much more powerful Empire, and succeed. She became a general, was sensitive to the Force, and later trained to be a Jedi Knight like her brother Luke Skywalker.*

Just as Fisher, who died on Tuesday, was a master of so many endeavors ― acting, writing, producing to name a few ― Leia Organa Solo did just about everything, and well.

Here are some important aspects of Leia’s character in the “Star Wars” universe, made possible by Fisher’s indomitable spirit.

(*This was part of the extended universe, and while no longer canon, it’s still very relevant to me and many other fans.)

Mark Hamill Had No Idea He Was The Third Wheel Of The ‘Star Wars’ Franchise

Much like his character Luke Skywalker, it sounds like Mark Hamill was pretty much in the dark about everything going on behind the scenes of the original “Star Wars” movie. Hey, it was the ‘70s and you don’t just wake up with that Tatooine chic hairstyle, OK?

Hamill was apparently just as surprised to learn that his co-stars Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford were in the midst of an “intense” affair during the filming of the first installment of the epic space franchise.

“I was so self-involved at that point, they could’ve been doing it in front of me and I wouldn’t have noticed,” Hamill exclusively told Entertainment Tonight at the Comic-Con HQ network launch Tuesday. “I was single and had my own agenda.”

“I think it might have been a distraction if I’d known what was going on,” he added.

In November, Fisher confirmed the long-brewing rumors that she and Ford were indeed lovers during their time in a galaxy far, far away, despite the actor being married with two children at the time.

“I was so inexperienced, but I trusted something about him. He was kind,” Fisher, who was only 19 years old at the time compared to a 33-year old Ford, told People. “It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend.”

She detailed their three-month affair in her new memoir, The Princess Diaristwhich features excerpts from journals she kept while filming the original “Star Wars” movie.

5 Great Star Wars Friendships

Light sabers, space stations, mystical space wizards, and bizarre alien species. There are many elements that “make” a film feel uniquely Star Wars.

But for all the iconography of droids and spaceships, the most important element at Star Wars’ core is friendship.

It sounds really cheesy, but it’s true. Friendship and working together are a huge part of Star Wars, both on the light and dark sides of the Force. So many important duos in the lore not only added a new character layer, they helped key parts of the film be all the more important.

In celebration of Star Wars day, let’s take a look back at some of the most important friendships in Star Wars history.

Girl Bullied Over ‘Star Wars’ Gets Weird Al On Her Side

A girl bullied for loving “Star Wars” has the Force and Weird Al Yankovic with her.

Layla Murphy, 8, met the parody star at a concert recently after the 501st Legion, a “Star Wars” costume group with a charitable streak, helped her out.

Layla is yet another young girl who was teased at school for liking Star Wars amongst other "boy" things. As a result of…

Posted by The 501st Legion on Tuesday, August 11, 2015

Girls at Layla’s Norfolk, Virginia, school teased her, saying that “Star Wars” was for boys, CNN reported. She eventually asked her mother if she could stop wearing her “Star Wars” gear, including an R2-D2 jacket.

“She was asked if she was turning into a boy,” her mother, Nicolette Molina, told CNN.

A member of the 501st Legion who had met Layla at a fan convention was told of the kid’s troubles by Molina and summoned the Internet to send Layla support and “Star Wars” souvenirs. It was all to reassure Layla to be herself.

Then the 501st came through with perhaps the coolest gesture of all.

“Taking it one step further, Layla became the next recipient of the custom Stormtrooper armor originally built for another girl (Katie Goldman) who was in a similar situation,” the group wrote on Facebook.

A fully costumed Layla met Yankovic, who apparently mingles with denizens of the galaxy far, far away …

… and is also known for his “Star Wars” parodies, MTV noted.

Don’t listen to those bullies, Layla. “Star Wars” can be enjoyed by the entire universe.

Young Han Solo ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff To Be Helmed By ‘Lego Movie’ Directors

“Star Wars” and Legos were practically made for each other, as the “Force Awakens” Lego remake trailer proved. And now, the duo behind “The Lego Movie” are headed to a galaxy far, far away.

On Tuesday, StarWars.com announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the team best known for the Oscar-nominated animated film, will direct a ”Star Wars” anthology film. The directors, who were also behind “21 Jump Street, “22 Jump Street” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” will direct a stand-alone film based on a young Han Solo. The spinoff, written by Lawrence Kasdan (“The Empire Strikes Back,” “Return of the Jedi,” “The Force Awakens”) and Jon Kasdan (“The First Time”), will reveal how Han Solo became the “smuggler, thief, and scoundrel” we first met at the Mos Eisley Cantina.

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with,” Lord and Miller said in StarWars.com’s press release. “We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.” Well said.

According to Entertainment Weekly, a Han Solo origin film, which was first rumored two years ago, was reportedly going to be one of the first films in the “Star Wars” anthology series. However, “Rogue One” from director Gareth Edwards, was pushed up as the first spinoff so as not to confuse fans after Harrison Ford’s appearance in “The Force Awakens.”

Before the young Han Solo spinoff hits theaters on May 25, 2018, there’s lots of “Star Wars” to look forward to. J.J. Abrams’ “The Force Awakens” will open Dec. 18, followed by “Rogue One” on Dec. 16, 2016. There’s also the second “Star Wars” stand-alone film, which director Josh Trank left in May, as well as a separate rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off

Floor Games; a companion volume to “Little Wars

H.G. Wells had so much fun playing with his children on the floor of their playroom, he decided to write a jovial little book to inspire other parents in their pursuit of quality time with the kids. While the raw materials available from hobby stores of his day were woefully short of the variety and quality of what can be bought easily now, he and his sons created their own worlds to rule. This short work describes two games of imagination played out upon the floor of his home – an archipelago of islands, and a thoroughly integrated city, conveniently organized with two mayoral positions for his sons “G.P.W.” and “F.R.W.” While the toy people appearing in their worlds were often of martial nature, Wells decided to leave decription of military games to a later book: “Little Wars.

The merchandise of the original trilogy was largely confined to toys and games, but those games have since become computerized, the toys more sophisticated, and Star Wars has moved into the multi-media environment of the twenty-first century in ways unimaginable in the long-ago world of 1977. Let’s compare the two, side-by-side.

Transportation

We have hyper engines that go through hyperspace compared to warp drives that travel through normal space at FTL speeds. Technical data books indicate that the speeds and range of hyper drives are greater, however.

We have also repulsor craft that hover over the ground in the Empire, but not much is shown of Federation ground transport, although anti-grav units are used to move heavy objects. But the Federation has one edge: teleportation.

I’m going to consider them even here, based on having different advantages.

Energy Generation

Both empires seem to be able to produce unlimited power for their needs. The amount directed to any one use might be limited, but fuel seems to be endless. While the exact fuel for the Empire is unclear, it seems to be on-par with the Federation’s antimatter engines (although often at much larger scales, e.g. The Death Star). Another tie.

Communication

Both spacefaring civilizations have FTL communication that is not instantaneous at long distances. There are language translators that work in real time in the Federation, but these might just be for explorers. Citizens of the Empire seem to prefer being polyglot, but protocol droids are available for translation. Slight edge to the Federation here. (+1/2)

Manufacturing

The Federation is able to use replicators to nearly instantly produce food, durable goods and tools. Apparently it cannot produce all elements and molecules, perhaps needed a “base supply” of matter to convert into finished items, rather than just converting energy into matter directly. But holodecks have shown that it can instantly produce and break down the matter it works with.

The Empire, especially on the frontier, depends on trade. The movement of rare resources and finished goods is the center of their economy, indicating that they have no similar manufacturing capability. Plus one for the Federation.

Construction

Both civilizations build large spaceships in orbit. While the Federation can produce starbases which are large cities, the Empire makes Star Destroyers and was able to produce two Death Stars (one in secret). It seems that Empire construction methods are superior. Plus one for the Empire.

Military

Ground troops for both civilizations make use of hand-held energy weapons, some of which are powerful enough to vaporize their target, although the later are not commonly used (too few shots?) Neither seem to use personal energy shields.

Vehicles similarly use weapons the scale-up with the size of the vehicle, although vehicles are large enough that they can supply the energy needed to maintain shields that defend against energy weapons. The extremely large size of Empire ships mean large shields, thus fighters are more heavily used to penetrate the shields physically and then deliver weapons attacks. But the two seem to be on-par technologically here and I don’t see one side having an advantage over the other, should they fight each other with the same mass of ships or number of ground troops with air support.

Medical Technology

Severe injuries that do not result in brain death seem to be reparable. For some reason the Federation seems to be plagued with hundreds of rare and hard to identify diseases on its border (more often across it, perhaps). But they are able to treat them with a minimum of fatalities.

The Empire has a greater use of cybernetics (Repli-Limb Prosthetic Replacements), although it is unclear if this is cultural or if they lack some sort of limb regeneration technology that the Federation might be using off camera. On the other hand, Gordi did have cybernetic sight…

Both are also known to use cloning technology (in secret) and to genetically modify members for specialty purposes (again, rarely).

Lack of firm details here results in another tie.

Robotics and Computing

The Empire has a love of creating seemingly sentient robots to function as servants. The Federation has produced many robots, but does not tend to use them alongside human crews. Use in construction and other off-camera activities seems to be the primary use.

But then, the two sentient robots (Data and Lore) are afforded full human rights (and criminal responsibility for their actions), possibly unlike in the Empire. Certainly the difficulty in production is not rewarded by an economic return of gaining a specialized servant.

The Federation does seem to prefer using semi-sentient computers for their starships, however. There is no sign that The Empire does this with their ships. In fact, you often need a droid to interface with the ship computer.

In the end, a small advantage to the Empire (+1/2)

[Update: the new Star Trek movie has an apparently robotic crewman on the bridge of the Enterprise. Perhaps they are ret-conning to incorporate “droids”.]

Field Manipulation

Both empires have mastered the control of projected fields, artificial gravity, ship integrity fields and so on. Shield generators are standard gear for starships and can be placed in ground installations. Some cloaking technology exists for both, as does projecting holograms.

Another tie.

“Social” Technology

Although this is not being considered here, I would like to point out that the smaller Federation has made use of social institutions which are more “advanced” than the Empire. The Federation is a non-discriminating, post-scarcity economy which no longer uses money and is interested in the betterment of all of its citizens equally. The Empire exists as a feudal state (or Republic, before and after the rise of the Empire) with slavery common, an unequal sharing of resources, and a culture that accepts bounty hunters and smugglers, at least on the fringes of civilization.

Final Result: A tie.

The Federation has transporters, personal translators, holodecks and replicators.

The Empire has droids, faster/further warp drive travel, massive construction projects, energy generation that scales linearly with its construction projects, and cybernetics.

Also keep in mind that the Empire is much, much larger. It spans the entire galaxy. There are civilizations in the Federation’s galaxy whose technology dwarfs both the Federation and the Empire.
