Paris Scene: What’s New for Couture Season

Paris is on fire — and that’s not just temperature-wise. From new shops, restaurants, spas and art exhibitions, the city is a hotbed of newness. Here’s a selection of where to go during this summer’s couture season.
NEW LEGACY: The Hôtel Barrière Fouquet’s Paris has a new retail space, called Legacy. Set up by Bow Group and Sébastien Chapelle, who formerly headed the watches and high-tech offer at Colette, the space sells high-tech grooming tools from Dyson and Braun; exclusive watch models from labels such as Corum and Casio G-Shock; jewelry, and books by Rizzoli and Taschen. Interior decorator Jacques Garcia designed the plush space, which is tucked next to the Marta bar, with red moiré curtains and a purple carpet. — Mimosa Spencer

The Best Call of Duty Games, Ranked by You

You picked Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (not to be confused with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered, here’s an explainer on all that). It’s pretty funny a reboot of this landmark title was announced this very week! It was pretty close there with Modern Warfare 2, and Black Ops trailed both significantly in third place. What’s Next for Calvin Klein Following Raf Simons Split?

The much ballyhooed Calvin Klein-Raf Simons marriage has ended in divorce — and now observers wonder what’s next for the iconic American fashion brand, and whether it can flourish without the “halo” of a designer collection.
As reported, the tie-up between Klein and Simons came to an abrupt — but not unexpected — end Friday night when Calvin Klein Inc. sent out a terse press release at 6:17 p.m., right before the Christmas holiday weekend, stating the company and Simons, who was chief creative officer, had “amicably decided to part ways.” The statement said that Klein has decided on a new brand direction which differs from Simons’ creative vision — but provided no details on what that new direction is.
Calvin Klein will not be having a fashion show during New York Fashion Week in February (it had been scheduled for Feb. 12 at 8 p.m.), and the company will now have to figure out how to move forward after the pricey, multimillion dollar experiment with Simons went bust after a mere 28 months, and eight months before the end of a three-year deal with the Belgian designer.
PVH Corp., parent company of Calvin Klein, invested between $ 60 million and $ 70 million in

What’s Next For The Obamas? Michelle Promises They’re ‘Not Gone’

Michelle Obama is still fighting the good fight when it comes to issues that matter to her.

Obama sat down with Sam Kass, the former White House chef and senior advisor for nutrition policy, in Washington, D.C., on Friday for the Partnership for a Healthier America summit to address childhood obesity. And she took aim at President Donald Trump’s policies

“This is where you really have to look at motives,” she said. “You really have to stop and think, ‘Why don’t you want our kids to have good food at school? What is wrong with you and why is that a partisan issue?’ Why would that be political? What is going on?”

Access to healthy school lunches was the former first lady’s focus while in the White House, and Trump’s administration has been rolling back those efforts

The Obamas took some time for themselves after Trump’s inauguration in January, inking book deals, vacationing and just generally living their best lives

But they’re back and they’re not going anywhere.

“We’re not gone, we’re just breathing, y’all. Let us breathe,” Obama insisted, per People magazine. “We’ve got to get our new lives set up.”

“When you hear me getting riled up in this chair, it’s not politics, it’s parenting that’s really moving me,” she said, adding that everyone needs to “put aside our politics … to not be cynical … to not give up.”

She’s certainly not.

“You’ve got me as a partner as long as I can be of use,” she said. “So the question for you is, where do you want me? Just let me know and I’ll be here.”

Darlene Cates, ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’ Star, Dead At 69

Darlene Cates, who starred as Bonnie Grape in 1993’s “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” died in her sleep on Sunday morning, her family told TMZ.

Cates, best known for playing Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio’s housebound and overweight mother in the Peter Hedges novel-turned-movie, was 69. Her daughter, Sheri, took to Facebook to share the news, writing, “We take comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain and is in the arms of our Heavenly Father.”

Cates was reportedly cast in “Gilbert Grape” after Hedges watched her on a 1992 segment on “Sally Jessy Raphael,” entitled “Too Heavy to Leave Their House.” Casting directors offered Cates ― who was close to 600 pounds and housebound at the time ― the role of Bonnie, and she accepted. It was a standout performance by Cates, who went on to appear in shows like “Picket Fences” and “Touched by an Angel.” She is also set to star in the new movie “Billboard,” which is currently in post-production.

In 2012, Cates revealed she lost 250 pounds after years of health problems. She told the Dallas Morning News that she hoped to act again, as she had such a lovely experience with “Gilbert Grape.”

Her on-screen son DiCaprio wrote her a note after the film, telling Cates, “I’m not really the best in expressing my words in writing but you are the most special person I have ever [met]. I’ll always remember you as the best acting mamma I ever had. You triumphed in your role.”

Rest in peace, Darlene Cates.

What’s The Best Thing The Duchess Of Cambridge Wore This Year?

The Duchess of Cambridge had quite a year. She worked to end stigma surrounding mental illness, showed off her photography chops, hiked a huge mountain in Bhutan without a visible trace of sweat, hung out with the Obamas, guest edited The Huffington Post, wore tiaras, shopped at a thrift store, took a selfie with Serena Williams… the list goes on.

As usual, the former Kate Middleton did it all with the utmost style and poise. We should know, as we’ve spent many an hour this year tracking her every move

It’s difficult to choose a favorite between the many dresses she wore (and re-wore) in 2016, so we’ve laid out our top 11 for you to choose from. We’re partial to the white Self Portrait gown, but that’s likely because we now know Kate has at least one item in her closet that none other than Paris Hilton has in hers.

Take a look and pick your favorite below.

What’s In This Stuff?

What’s In This Stuff?

We all like to buy things that make our lives easier, keep us healthy and provide a bit of luxury. But, few of us are aware that many of the products we buy every day are polluting our homes and bodies. In this fascinating and sometimes shocking book, Pat Thomas reveals that many widely-used products contain a cocktail of cheap, poorly-tested chemicals that are implicated in long-term health problems. Many of us now scan food labels for unwanted ingredients, yet we unthinkingly use toiletries and other products that contain a multitude of undesirable chemicals, believing that what we put on our bodies is not as influential to health as what we put in them. However, scientists now believe that household and beauty products and everyday foods expose us a witches’ brew of chemicals that wage a kind of chemical warfare against our bodies. Wide-ranging and practical, What’s In This Stuff? examines everything from food additives, beauty products and household cleaners, to pharmaceutical products and garden and pet supplies. It also contains a glossary of chemicals and E numbers, a list of the 50 chemicals you should definitely avoid, and suggests non-toxic alternatives to conventional products.

What’s My Name Now, Daddy?

What’s My Name Now, Daddy?

This is the emotionally enriching and absolutely true story of two senior citizens, a young baby boy, an unusual governmental program that you probably have never heard of before, and an international adoption. It resulted in the father being charged with felonies in criminal court in one country, and threatened with the same charge in another. It may make you laugh, make you cry, shake your head in disbelief, have you gritting your teeth with frustration, angry at uncaring bureaucrats while at the same time delighted with a few helpful government employees, as well as feeling several other emotions unique to you, but you won’t be bored. For instance, some of the events border on the paranormal, so be prepared for some unexplainable things. You may not be awe-struck by them afterward, but will you be able to easily shrug them off as mere coincidence? Are there things unknown in your philosophy, Horatio? So fix yourself a martini (perhaps even a pitcher) and some popcorn, then get out your crying towels, punching bag, and confetti. Because although this is a tale of truly incredible good fortune, it is also an emotional roller-coaster ride. Spoiler alert: despite all odds, it has a happy ending. At least, so far.

Alex Glover: What’s New in Men’s Hair Styles and Grooming

Alex Glover has been cutting and styling men’s hair for 15 years and his team of stylists — whom he trains personally — have crafted model looks for London Collections: Men. A Central Saint Martins graduate, the 35-year-old joined Murdock in London’s Shoreditch neighborhood as head barber in 2007 and has an affinity for all things artistic, including design and architecture, fashion and photography, and film and vintage books. WWD caught up with the stylist to talk about grooming tips and trends, popular hairstyles and his favorite London haunts.

What men’s grooming trends have you come across recently?
The return of Nineties styles has been creeping in with younger guys and the edgier crowd. They are inspired by the Stone Roses/Inspiral Carpets/Happy Mondays — think heavy mop tops and the dreaded curtains. These are looks that have a nod to a specific genre of music, so they are not for everyone. As for the more professional-looking style, many gents are going for cropped lengths, but with sharp back and sides — a shorter manageable length that is easy to style in different ways. As for facial hair, moustaches are not worn as elaborately while with beards, we are seeing a more compact

What’s Trending With Tara: Culottes

2015-08-19-1440014811-4394917-Tara_Toggage_Resized.jpg

At this point, I am sure you received the memo — culottes are cool. Hip and chic, these trousers are a modern alternative to the midi-skirt. The hem hits mid-calf and the leg is cut wide, so even though they top the style charts, the silhouette can leave you looking squat if not styled correctly. Looking stumpy is not something I endorse; however, I cannot deny the freshness of these pants and feel very confident we will be seeing them grace the streets on the most fashionable come fall, as well. And since there are so many options out there that won’t break the bank, I felt there is no better time than now to master the culotte!

After scouting around, one version I found easy to execute is the culotte jumpsuit. Because of the nature of a jumpsuit, there is no break in material, pattern or color from head-to-hem so the result is lengthening to compensate for the choppiness of the culotte. I also found that when wearing this type of bottom, if you keep your top half fitted, it balances out the volume in the leg. And more over, if you are daring enough to bare a bit of skin on top, it will offset the awkwardness of the hem and alternatively highlight the exposed skin on the ankle instead.

Rocking culottes right now will instantly give you style game. The fact that they are not quite pants and not quite shorts makes them ideal for in-between weather, wearing on city streets and easy transitioning from work to play. I encourage you to hop on board with me and give these trousers a try while keeping these tips in mind:

  • Always seek to stretch out your frame and appear taller. One way to do so is by eliminating the breaks in the silhouette. Selecting a jumpsuit version is not the only way to do this. Wearing one color head-to-toe will also do the trick, check out What’s Trending With Tara Monochromatic for more on that.
  • Wear heals, the higher the better. Showing skin around the ankle and choosing one with a pointed toe will help create a longer silhouette.
  • Seek out culottes that have a high waist. This way, if you dare to ditch your heels and opt for pure comfort instead, the high waistline gives the illusion of a longer hip-to-toe ratio, i.e. longer legs!
  • Try coupling a high-waisted pair with a crop top or a form-fitting top tucked in to accentuate a small waist. This will bring sexy back to a somewhat androgynous look.
  • And lastly, try to avoid busy prints and stick to basic colors like navy, black, ivory, or tan. Let the pants’ shape speak for itself.

Here are some options to consider helping narrow your search:

Zara — cropped high waisted trousers

Shopbop — culotte jumpsuit

ASOS — wide leg pants

Mango — palazzo culottes

Topshop — culotte jumpsuit

Armani Exchange — chambray culottes

Loft — cropped linen sailor pants

Zara — cropped wide leg trousers

Selfies and bikini shots get a bad name—they’re a little cheesy, and maybe a little braggy, but the fact of the matter is, they’re a fun record of our youth, whether we’re 21 or in our mid-40s with two kids. Some of them will be bad, and thanks to digital film (and hopefully good friends), most of those will get deleted. Some of them will be just meh, and we’ll look a little BBQ-and-beer-bloated in them. It’s OK that there are a few crummy pics of you out there in the world, though, especially if there are others where you look relaxed, happy, flattered, and damn sexy. So how do you get those photos? Here’s What’s Appropriate To Bring To An Engagement Party

The rules of wedding etiquette are constantly changing, making it difficult for modern brides, grooms and guests to find up-to-date and correct information. That’s why we launched #MannersMondays, a series in which we ask our followers on Twitter and Facebook to submit their most burning etiquette-related questions. Then, with the help of our team of etiquette experts, we get you the right answers to your biggest Big Day dilemmas. Check out this week’s question below!

“Engagement party: Gift or no gift?”Lauryn Ricketts/Twitter

Anna Post — great-great-granddaughter of etiquette guru Emily Post and author of Emily Post’s Wedding Etiquette — is here to help us answer this week’s question. Find out what she had to say below:

The short answer is that while giving an engagement gift hasn’t traditionally been expected, the trend in most parts of the country has shifted toward giving gifts. Check with your host if you are really unsure.

Back when Emily Post was first writing about etiquette in the early 1920s, engagement parties were very small, and only the closest of friends and family would give a gift. Also, an engagement announcement would often have been a surprise to guests at a party made up of close friends, who therefore wouldn’t have gifts ready to give.

Engagement gifts today are typically small tokens of the marriage to come — small household items such as picture frames, wine bottle coasters, cookbooks, sets of tea towels, or gifts the couple can share such as a pair of champagne flutes, a bottle of wine or a gift certificate for a dinner out.

You can submit your wedding etiquette questions via Facebook or tweet them to us @HuffPostWedding with the hashtag #MannersMondays.

What’s in A Name

What’s in A Name

Popular Paul Harvey exclaims; ‘Now you know the rest of the story!’ In 1934 an astute editor of the READERS DIGEST wanted the story’s beginning. He asked Don Donaldson to write a personal essay about his recovery of eyesight after 14 years of blindness. Don obliged. His article, entitled ‘A Messenger in Two Worlds,’ drew thousands of dollars in donations for the magazine’s Braille subscription fund. Twenty-three year-old Donaldson, no longer blind, was studying at Harvard on scholarship and was able to follow a career which brought him in touch with the near and the famous, including Helen Keller. Eventually he met and married a lady who taught the deaf. At retirement, their combined dedicated careers exceed 75 years of teaching, mostly with deaf, blind and deaf-blind children. Now at 92, Donaldson is still going strong. He lives in Vancouver, Washington, and lap swims daily. Occasionally he attends class reunions and enjoys speaking before Lions Clubs and AARP groups. His lively autobiography covers an unusual life rich in personal experience, a struggle to achieve despite adversity, many historic references reaching back in time, and seen through an eye that was once blind, fascinating world travel on cargo ships. A thread of romance unravels from the first paragraph to a happy ending. The University of Washington Press examined the manuscript. Its Board praised the work for its inspirational aura and rated it worthy of a large readership. Throughout the book, pathos and rollicking humor prevail and stir the emotions, bringing tears to the eyes and laughter to the heart. The title WHATS IN A NAME is from Shakespeare. Donaldson first pondered the thought when he was only six years old. He sincerely believes that name can shape one’s destiny. Do you agree? Now you can know the rest – Here’s an inspirational autobiography you will want to read!

Live Without Pain: A New Theory on What’s Wrong With You and How to Fix It.

Live Without Pain: A New Theory on What’s Wrong With You and How to Fix It.

This is the US version, UK version also available. Do you have an illness or injury that just won’t heal? Do you suffer from unexplained aches, pains, stiffness, or fatigue that won’t go away, no matter what you try? The culprit may literally be right under your nose or hanging around your neck. Simon King explains his theory, based on careful observation, that many necklaces, rings, watches, piercings, and dental work affect your sensory nervous system and muscle reflexes – whether you can feel anything happening or not! Based on a well-known but under-appreciated mechanism called ‘Proprioception,’ Live without Pain reveals how many common items activate proprioceptive mechanisms which leave you vulnerable to pain, and how you can remedy these without drugs, surgery or exercises. It offers individuals and health practitioners alike simple solutions that build health; sometimes resolving even long-term health issues in the process. Dear Medical Science: What’s Taking You So Long?

When I was a little kid, I had a lot of faith in you guys. Maybe I watched too many Star Trek episodes, but I figured by now — 50 years later — you’d have invented some miracle laser-like gizmo that could cure everything. The patient would lie down on a diagnostic bio-bed. Then the doctor would wave the gizmo over the illness-ridden body and — presto! — the affliction would magically vanish.

Where’s the gizmo, guys? We want the gizmo. Okay, forget the gizmo. I’ll settle for a Miracle Pill that does the same thing.

For decades we’ve been throwing money at you and, I hate to say it, I was kind of hoping for something more by now. Okay, I’m an impatient patient. Sue me.

That’s not to say you haven’t made some amazing advances. You’ve given us meds for cholesterol, ED, depression, AIDS, blood pressure and a host of other ailments; there are bionic hands, heart transplants, new vaccines, nerve regrowth, facial reconstruction, MRIs, laparoscopy and a whole lot more.

But, to cite a few examples, you still can’t cure Alzheimer’s; cancer, in all it’s many delightful forms, still mystifies you; you haven’t put the kibosh on multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, diabetes or heart disease; hell, you haven’t even rid the planet of hemorrhoids yet.

Guys, we don’t want to go through all that suffering anymore. We’re sick of getting sick. It’s the 21st Century. Stem cells were discovered in 1978. You promised us limitless possibilities, yet here we are, 36 years later, still twiddling our thumbs.

Here’s how primitive we still are: Kidney patients still have to be hooked up to washing machines; basal cell carcinomas still have to be dug out by hand; skulls still have to be drilled to get to brain tumors; casts are still used for broken limbs; we still repair wounds with thread or staples; tooth extractions still require a set of pliers; amputations still involve saws; hoses explore our digestive systems; we still use catheters (the last major improvement was the flexible catheter, invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1752, hello.)

Let’s take cancer. If you are unlucky enough to get pancreatic, ovarian or lung cancer, you can pretty much put a down payment on a tombstone. After decades of research, here’s what we have in the arsenal: surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Not very impressive guys. Surgery is still horrible no matter how you… um… cut it; radiation is… well… radiation. Then there’s the wonder of chemotherapy (invented in the 1940s.) Good job there, fellas. Poison the victim and hope that the cancer succumbs and the patient survives. What a breakthrough. Remember the old medical practice of bleeding patients to cure them of just about everything? Today, we ridicule that boneheaded procedure as hopelessly medieval. Ha ha. Guess what? A hundred years from now, scientists will get a huge guffaw out of chemo.

Where are the Pasteurs, Flemings and Salks of yesteryear? If it had taken the estimable Dr. Salk as long as it takes you, half the world’s population would still think the iron lung is a marvel of ingenuity.

Here’s what really bothers me: Everyday we read about your latest earthshattering breakthroughs. “Scientists Build Liver Out of Stem Cells!” “Scientists Solve Mystery of Aging!” “Researchers Discover New Drug that Shrinks Tumors!” Wow, I say excitedly. Finally.

Then what happens? Nothing. It seems as if none of these exciting new medical miracles ever make it from the lab to the hospital. They just seem to… disappear. We never hear about them again. What happened? Was it all just optimism? Is there a need to publish something to justify the investment? Is the FDA dragging its feet? Is Big Pharma quashing them? Are the rats faking it? What?

All I know is that my internist did not offer me a new liver the last time I saw him, not that I need one. Yet.

Taking a Hard Look at What’s Important: Validating our Values

When someone asks what our values are, we can probably start listing things that seem important to us in life right away. These things will determine how we assess our level of success, and so getting them right is very important.

However, as we eagerly list those values we may not quite as readily step back to decide which of those are actually ours and not ones that have been handed to us over the years. These ‘hand-me-down’ values are still very valid, so much so, that by now making that distinction may seem like a bit of a struggle.

I first noticed this when talking to students at the business school about their careers, goals and aspirations. What they considered to be important to them as they thought about their new post MBA lives was strikingly similar. It made sense; a set of like minded, highly driven individuals with similar backgrounds were likely to have common values. But equally, they were also very different people, and though I didn’t get this information the first time, after a bit of prodding I found out that:

Jo, had lost his father when young and grown up in a small home in Kansas, Peter was dealing with huge financial burdens and was born and raised in London, and Emily came from a long line of doctors in Kenya and was breaking away from her family tradition to pursue her dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. So, I pushed further and asked about their backgrounds and what that meant in terms of who they wanted to be, and how they defined success.

Soon the validation started trickling in,

I mean sure, when I say making an impact, of course I am talking much more than money.

When I said I’d never move back to Kansas, I mean I guess, if my mother needed me to, I would… It’s actually not so bad.

Hearing the students start to modify that initial checklist inspired me to do the same. Which of the values I held most dearly were ones I actively chose? It made me think about how far away from my Mediterranean origin I had come, and more so about the fact that I never really chose a fast paced, big city lifestyle, but yet here I was, allowing the city to define what success meant to me.

While we busily chase what everyone else chases, and make comparisons based on selective information through things like social media, it may be hard to really take the time to examine what really matters to us, personally. It gets even harder if it directly conflicts with what matters to those around us, or more accurately what appears to matter. I suppose we can call this, ‘value pressure.’

For the business students it was as important as ever to perform that validation, as they thought about their future careers and continued to define success for themselves, but I worried that might not happen. What I also realized was that we are all at risk of pursuing a path assuming it will define success for us. Without taking the time and being flexible enough to examine those values constantly and checking to see which hold true, and which lost value along the way, we may stop really remembering or trusting what we believe. It is then that we risk that all the effort we put into our endeavors, career and projects lead us down a path where our values just aren’t valid.

What’s the Connection Between Memorial Day and Radio Countdowns?

If we know nothing else, we know Americans love lists. We love to rank football teams, rock albums, cars, pizzerias, movies, former girlfriends, and anything else of which there’s three or more.

Why?

Because we Americans understand — more so than any other culture — that some things have to be better than others. And once teased, we must know the better from the other. That’s why, every Memorial Day, we celebrate not just by hosting barbecues and honoring fallen soldiers, but by obsessively listening to radio countdowns.

Now I can rationalize a connection between between fallen soldiers and family barbecues… I think. Something about patriotism, and perhaps open fire.

But the connection between honoring soldiers and knowing if Iggy Azalea landed at No. 3 or No. 6? Not so much. We just love lists.

A few years back, one of my local radio stations naturally decided to count down “The Top 1001 Songs!” Their description provided no historical or genre limitations — just “as voted by you.” Without any other qualification, it simply existed as THE TOP 1001 SONGS OF ALL TIME. A high bar, to be sure.

This was their Top 5 (because, as an American, you now must know):

No: 5: “Get Down Tonight” by K.C. and the Sunshine Band
No: 4: “Hey Jude” by The Beatles
No: 3: “Satisfaction” by The Rolling Stones
No: 2: “Don’t Stop Believin'” by Journey
No: 1: “Rag Doll” by the Four Seasons

“Rag Doll”? “RAG DOLL”?

Number 1,000 was REO Speedwagon’s “Keep on Loving You.” Why you voted to put 998 songs between REO Speedwagon’s greatest hit and Journey’s greatest hit is beyond me, but such is the mysterious allure of the radio countdown.

Of course, a real “Top 1001 of All Time” would be a very random list. But given it’s Memorial Day, I must do my patriotic duty. So below, I present my version of the Top 10 of all time (influenced heavily by my dislike of both country music and Elvis, my brother Paul’s fourth grade piano recital, and the fact that I’ve been tuning out most of this year).

No. 10: “Gangnam Style” by PSY
No. 9: “Respect” by Aretha Franklin
No. 8: (tie) “Hungarian Rhapsody” by both Queen & Franz Liszt
No. 7: “Fur Elise” by Beethoven (and played to small-fingered perfection by Paul)
No. 6: “This Land is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie
No. 5: “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”
No. 4: “Colored Lines” by Robin Thicke
No. 3: “Yesterday” by The Beatles
No. 2: Gregorian Chants (particularly 1-4903, 5542, and 5553)
No. 1: (tie) “Happy Birthday to You” and “Stairway to Heaven,” the latter by Led Zeppelin

See? Like a true American, you read all the way to the end, despite the fact that you don’t really give a crap.

But if you did stop before you got to No. 1, you’re a stronger person than me. Or maybe Canadian.

Wide-ranging and practical, ‘What’s In This Stuff?’ examines everything from food additives, beauty products and household cleaners, to pharmaceutical products and garden and pet supplies. It also contains a glossary of chemicals and E numbers, a list of the 50 chemicals you should definitely avoid, and suggests non-toxic alternatives to conventional products.
