Adopted Woman Whose Family Thought She Was Dead Reunites with Siblings 60 Years Later: ‘I Feel Whole’

For decades, Sylvia Kewer’s family thought she was dead.

Kewer, who was adopted as a toddler, grew up in Emporia, Virginia, believing she was an only child. All of that changed in August when she learned she has four half-siblings.

“ was saying her whole life she didn’t know what she was. She kept saying, ‘What am I?’ ” Kewer’s daughter, Natalie Graves Tucker, tells PEOPLE.

“Here she is thinking she’s alone all these years and doesn’t know her story … She’s always been a loner and here she has four siblings with children and grandchildren!”

On Nov. 11, Kewer met her half-siblings (and dozens of other family members) at a sweet reunion in Abingdon. Tucker rented a home for the family where they had a cookout and shared old photographs.

“It was a culmination of pictures and conversations and emails that we’ve had with the family over the past few months. It was exciting,” Tucker says. “They just opened their arms with love and so it couldn’t have happened any better. I couldn’t have planned it any better.”

Kewer spent a day and half with her newfound siblings: Billy Ray, 63, Nancy Goode-O’Donnell, 69, Ralph Duff and Curtis Duff, 72.

Tucker says the reunion left her mother feeling loved, she recalls Kewer saying: “I feel whole, reborn, refreshed and stronger than ever.”

A Family Journey

The siblings’ reunion was months in the making, and it all began with a DNA test on Ancestry.com. Tucker and Kewer submitted tests and soon learned that their DNA matched that of several other people — including Ray’s son.

“When I told her that her brother wanted to FaceTime her, she was just like, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God!’ ” Tucker tells PEOPLE. “It’s just so amazing for her. She’s like there’s no longer a question mark. ‘I know who I am and I know what I am.’ ”

Tucker, Ray and Kewer began communicating and, over the next few months, Tucker says she received Facebook messages from cousins, nieces, nephews and more, all eager to attend the cookout Tucker had planned for the family’s reunion.

As the family met and exchanged stories at the rental home from Crooked Cabin Properties, they began to piece together Kewer’s story.

Many of the siblings went their separate ways as children, one was raised by a grandmother, another by their father, and others were adopted. Kewer’s four half-siblings had long known about each other, and reunited at their mother’s funeral in the ’80s.

However, Kewer, born Dorothy Mae Goode, was the mystery.

“Billy found and everybody kept saying, ‘I guess Dorothy was dead,” Tucker tells PEOPLE. “My mom only remembers an orphanage and she remembers my grandparents coming to get her.”

A Fresh Start

Now that Kewer has found her family, she never plans to let them go. Tucker says the siblings exchanged phone numbers, noting that Kewer talks to her half-sister Nancy almost every day.

“There is talk about having another get together next year in the spring or the summer,” Tucker tells PEOPLE. “Everybody wants to get together next year.”

Sneak Peek of Family Portrait: Ben & Daniel’s Road to Adoption

She adds of her mother: “Now that she has everybody’s information, she definitely plans to connect with everybody.”

With the reunion, Tucker says a special bond was formed between Kewer and Nancy.

“Her and her sister just stuck together like glue when they were there,” Tucker tells PEOPLE.

Amanda Seyfried And Thomas Sadoski Did The Whole Secret Eloping Thing

Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski secretly eloped this weekend and if our fifth sense is correct, there’s a 30 percent chance they’re already married. Ugh, sorry “Mean Girls” fans, you’ll forgive us one day.

The couple, who are expecting their first child together, married in a private ceremony on March 12, after less than a year of dating. And by private we mean they ran off together and didn’t invite anybody to the wedding.

The “Newsroom” actor made the surprise announcement on Thursday night during a visit to “The Late Late Show with James Corden” ― if you’re gonna do it, do it big ― when the host caught a glance of his wedding ring.

“We eloped,” Sadoski announced. “We just took off into the country with an officiant and just the two of us, and we did our thing … We had a great day. It was perfect.”

According to Sadoski, the two took Seyfried’s beloved Australian Shepherd, Finn, along for the ride and wrote their own vows, describing the intimate ceremony as “beautiful.”

This nice man is going to be on @latelateshow tonight to talk about nice things!

A post shared by Amanda Seyfried (@mingey) on

Seyfried and Sadoski first met while working together on an off-Broadway production of “The Way We Get By” in 2015. However, they didn’t start dating until early 2016, as the actress had recently split from her ex-boyfriend of two years, Justin Long. Seyfried and Sadoski later reunited during filming of “The Last Word,” which hit theaters this month.

The Gettysburg Address: Using Lincoln’s Words to Tell the Whole Story of America’s Civil War, 1776 to the Present

”Four score and seven years ago … ” They’re the famous opening words of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address delivered in 1863, and they point back to the founding year of the United States: 1776. To understand the issues involved in the Civil War, it’s necessary to go that far back in American history. Based on the founding fathers’ vision for America, how free were the states to leave the Union if they wanted to? Did the federal government have the power and right to stop them? What did Lincoln really think about the issues of slavery and race? Those are just some of the questions this graphic novel examines. Divided into sections corresponding to the phrases of the Gettysburg Address, this is an enlightening read that brings the reader face to face with the complex historical issues behind the Civil War. More than just a comic book, it goes surprisingly in-depth and shows the causes of the Civil War were not as simple as you may think.Product DetailsDimensions: 6” W x 9” HSoftcover graphic novel, 224 pages, by Jonathan HennesseyArt by Aaron McConnellISBN: 978-0-06-196976-8

6 Ways to Shift Your Mindset to a Whole New Level

Have you ever felt frustrated or discouraged in your life or career? Does it seem like everyone else is moving faster toward their goals and dream life and with more ease than you are?
Sure you have had some success, but every time you have a win, backwards you go again. You’re probably thinking what is going on here? Why do I struggle so much?

And the answer is simple: Your belief system and subconscious mind needs reprogramming.

Your belief system is stored in the subconscious mind, created from childhood moments where you were taught someone else’s beliefs, or where you decided that this was the way your life is going to be. This programming runs in the background most of the time. Your conscious adult mind is competing with it, constantly!

So now you know why, when you want to bring something into your life that does not already exist in it, your body and mind get distracted, fearful, start comparing and self-sabotaging. Emotions come up or negative mind chatter takes over and you get stuck in a loop of your old programming like: I am not enough, Life is difficult, I will never find my soul mate, I am always in debt, I have to be perfect etc.

This subconscious programming does not want you to leave your comfort zone and it will do anything to make sure you stay there. It will sabotage your creativity, energy and even your health.

If you want to move past this programming so you can finally have the life and business you truly desire, you’ll have to face up to these old beliefs and start making some changes.

Here are six things you can do, right now to empower yourself and move closer to the life you deserve:

1. Allow, Don’t Judge
This isn’t just about judging your thoughts, this is about allowing them. What we resist persists. When you allow yourself to observe your thoughts, you create a space to manifest something that does not already exist. Allowing opens up the flow and creativity of new possibilities.

2. Ask Questions
We have been conditioned to not ask questions. For many, asking questions is a sign of weakness, embarrassing, wrong or it means you are a failure. Asking yourself the right questions instead of judging, opens up a space for you to receive new information that you may not have considered or allowed previously. Ask: What is possible here? What is good about this? What do I not know that I need to know to make this work beneficially in my life? How does it get any better than this?

The answers may not come immediately, and that’s okay. The point is you offered something different for your mind to focus on. What you ask, you shall receive.

3. Write It Down
Write down all the secrets about you that you do not want to reveal to anyone, not even yourself. This exercise will shine a light on everything that is in the way of your progress and will lessen its hold on you, allowing you to receive more of what you do want.

4. Visualize What You Want
Use visualization to see your worries and concerns, allow them to unfold in your mind’s eye without judgment. Thank them for showing you what is really going on.

Now ask your worries and concerns to bow out. You no longer need them. You got this!

Then play a new scene out in your mind of the success and life you desire. The subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between real and imagined, which is why this works.

5. Use Your Energy
Now this may seem a bit different, but you’ve probably heard the phrase, everything is energy, and that’s because it is. Here’s how to use that to your advantage: Using your hands, mind and words, pull the energy of what you want towards you.

Ask whatever it is you want in your life to come play with you. Look at this as a playful experiment!

If you are new to this, start with something small like butterflies or a particular book. Then use this for manifesting things that matter like: money, clients or happiness! Use your imagination and watch what happens.

6. Value Yourself
No one can ever value you more than you can. Make yourself and your life a priority. Set aside designated times to do something to propel yourself forward in life and create what you deserve and desire.

Commit to five days a week until it becomes a habit.

Only you will really know what needs to change, and only you can make those changes. In order to design and create something different, you have to do something different.

Make this self-discovery journey a fun adventure. Imagine you are digging for hidden treasure, the treasures within.

You may want to start with just one of these exercises and master it before adding a new one. These practices will build your confidence and chip away at the old patterns holding you back.
Be consistent and persistent. Everything takes time to manifest. Just as art or sculptures take time to bring into existence, the same is true with your life creations. Stick with it ’till your art piece is finished.

When you clear the programming and beliefs deep inside your mind, your life starts to flow with more joy and ease. Less effort will be required, as the struggle with yourself is gone. More opportunities are revealed, as there is no longer any limiting program in your way. You see them and grab them! Problems are solved right away, because you naturally become solution-oriented and more creative.

So now you are strong, confident inside and out, in your life or career.

1. “Marriage is basically like having a grown child who you’re constantly having to find things for — shoes, wallet, keys, contacts.”Ciara Hill

2. “Marriage is being pretty damn sure you could identify your husband in a pitch black room by his farts alone.” Laura Looch

3. “Marriage is when you eat food and ask, ‘Do you want some?’ but you’re hoping they’ll say no.” Gary Casper Muirhead

4.“Marriage is kissing your kid goodnight before your spouse and racing downstairs to get to the remote first.”Melissa Waldron

5. “Marriage is seeing who can pretend to be asleep longest when a kid or pet wants something.”Christine Wiedeman Summers

6. “Marriage is basically trying to remember when the other gets a haircut so you don’t forget to tell them it looks nice, even if it looks the same.” Paige Smith Radley

7. “Marriage is listening to your spouse tell the same joke to different people and trying to act amused every time.”Kathleen Snow

8. “Marriage is staying up late by yourself binge-watching Netflix while they snore loudly in the other room.”Mary Kathryn Elizabeth Drain

9. “Marriage is a partnership — she finds the bugs and I have to kill them.” Scott King

10. “Marriage is being able to say ‘go get your own ice cream’ and not really feeling bad about not sharing.” Whitney Van Zyl

11. “Marriage is basically stating very quickly all the things that you want or need done before the other person sits or lies down.” Jessica Kazakos

How Yoga and Meditation Made Me a Whole New Person

I’m a person who has tried to live a healthy lifestyle (for the most part) and has generally managed to avoid too many life-negative habits. I wouldn’t categorize myself as a “health nut,” but I enjoy the satisfaction that I get from exercising regularly and eating wholesome food. When I started my practice of yoga and meditation, it seemed like something really in line with what I was already doing, but I was pleasantly surprised to find the huge difference it has made in my life.

#1 Improved my Flexibility

This may seem like a no-brainer, but yoga not only helped me stretch my muscles, it also perfected my posture and helped me with my back pain. Tight hamstrings and tight hips after a few years of sports had led to various back problems for me, and also a complication in my knee. The tightness in the hip region was the first thing to go after I began my yoga, and many other problems went “bye bye” soon too. I still have a bit of an ache in the knee every once in a while, But that has gone down drastically and seems to be set to follow the other problems into oblivion soon!

#2 Weight Loss

There are many types of yoga, but regardless which form you follow, yoga for weight loss has been attested as a very effective process. Yoga and meditation puts me in a mental state where I naturally eat less. I’m one of those people who eat more when they get upset, and apart from experiencing more emotional balance after doing yoga, I also found that it made me more conscious about what I eat without making any extra effort. It reduced my need for “comfort food” and let me decide what to eat based on what my body needs.

#3 Relaxed my Body-Mind

Both yoga and meditation are considered natural remedies for anxiety and stress because they shift the body’s mode away from the fight or flight response. This brings about a calm and rejuvenating process where at least for me, relaxation was almost a natural state. I found that I was likely to assume the worst in a situation, and was consequently able to develop more healthy relationships with friends, family and work colleagues. And I was no longer in a constant state of angst and tension about what had happened and what might happen.

#4 Improved my Attention and Focus

Focus often doesn’t rank high on people’s list of strengths these days, so you can imagine the difficulty a beginner like me would find in maintaining focus in tricky hatha yoga postures! But despite my propensity (typical of a modern lifestyle) towards attention deficiency, focus and attention is something that came naturally to me with regular practice of yoga and meditation. These aspects easily percolated into almost every other aspects of my day-to-day life.

Whatever may be your background or fitness level, yoga seems to have something to offer for everyone. So what are you waiting for? Get out your yoga mat and meditate!

Playboy Will Release A Whole Issue Shot By Terry Richardson

Terry Richardson, the prominent photographer who has been accused of sexual harassment by several models, will shoot an entire issue of Playboy, which is set to come out in early 2015.

Richardson previewed some NSFW images from the issue, titled “California Dreamin,'” on his blog Friday.

A Playboy spokeswoman told Jezebel that “Yes, Terry has shot for the magazine many times over the years, and has been a great partner.” As the website notes, not everyone is so eager to embrace Richardson these days; the shoe company Aldo parted ways with him in June as the chorus of complaints grew louder.

Richardson recently defended himself as part of a feature story in New York Magazine that drew plenty of criticism.

Bravest Guy In Whole Wide World Wears Mentos Suit, Drops Into Tank Of Diet Coke (VIDEO)

This just may the bravest guy in the whole wide world. Or, at least, a moderately smart man in an ad for a new TV series.

For those of you who grew up believing the myth that consuming a Mentos candy with Diet Coke will make your stomach explode, the video below could be too much to handle:

Have no fear. As Discovery Channel’s “MythBusters” site explains, “When you open and drink a Diet Coke, it releases much of the pressurized carbon dioxide that forms the carbonation. As the soda warms while traveling to the stomach, the gas continues to vaporize. Any remaining might cause your stomach to expand, but it isn’t enough to spark a dangerous gassy rebellion if you chase the soda with a pack of Mentos.”

The ad was released by Epic Meal Time, a TV show premiering on FYI July 26.

Lest we forget Joshua Jackson’s haunting Pop Rocks scene in the 90’s film “Urban Legend,” you can never be too careful with candy:

Whole Cloth; Second Edition: Sacred Stories in Verse

Whole Cloth; Second Edition: Sacred Stories in Verse

In Whole Cloth, I have collected some of my poems writ-ten on Biblical themes and some well-known and lesser-known stories and characters. There are also two thematic series in the book. One on the Nativity tells the story of the common figures of the Christmas Nativity scene. This series was inspired one year as I packed away our collection of craches after Christ-mas. It struck me that Mary was the only female figure in an event-birth of a baby-that in any other setting would feature numerous other women. I have tried to reflect women’s points of view in several other poems as well, such as Hannah, Naomi, Mary Magdalene, and the unnamed women whose stories are woven into the gospel. The book also includes a series on the Beatitudes, which I hope will give readers an opportunity to dwell upon the amazing words of Jesus as he spoke to the multitudes upon the mountain. Many of the poems are written in sonnet form, but there are also other formal patterns and some in free verse. My hope is that the language will help to open fresh insight into what for many people are familiar stories and teaching in the Bible. a “Garry Breland
