Virgil Abloh Talks Work, Life — but Not Politics

CHICAGO — “Incredible” is how Virgil Abloh described being recognized by his hometown with his first major retrospective, “Figures of Speech,” opening June 10 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
“I think within the narrative, within the work and the show is a little bit like, it’s a little bit sort of like, reaffirming these full circles like happen in places,” said Abloh, the artistic director of Louis Vuitton men’s wear and founder of Off-White during a sit-down interview Thursday morning at the new NikeLab Chicago Re-Creation Center, at 673 North Michigan Avenue.
“We’re in Chicago, it’s usually not a place that has like — it’s known for its art and it’s known for its architecture and design history,” said Abloh. “I think in terms of contemporary art that emanates, me as a contemporary artist emanated around the world to sort of do certain things, it’s sort of a full circle to have them curate a show and recognize that work.”
It was a full-circle connection with Michigan Avenue, as well — this is where his dream to work in fashion began, when he and pal Kanye West visited the Vuitton store just a few blocks away.
“It was this street,” Abloh said.

Title of Work Goes Brick-and-Mortar

Title of Work caught the retail bug when it was awarded one of the CFDA’s Retail Lab spots at Cadillac House for three months earlier this year. And now, the men’s accessories brand has opened its first official store on New York’s Lower East Side.
The 450-square-foot store is located at 57 Orchard Street and is on the ground level of the brand’s office and showroom space. Its grand opening event will be Oct. 16.
Jonathan Meizler, Title of Work founder, described the space as “transparent retail,” where customers will be able to watch the brand’s neckwear and jewelry being made within the space. The retail component is designed to be reminiscent of an art gallery with black floors that extend 3 feet up white walls, and a 15-foot wood plank in the center to showcase the objects. A two-way mirror at the back provides a trompe l’oeil effect to the atelier in the rear.
“Historically, the Lower East Side was the garment manufacturing capital in the 19th century, and many residents of the neighborhood, particularly on Orchard Street, worked in their homes constructing garments by hand,” Meizler said. “The opening of our flagship and atelier is a nod to the rich history of handmade craftsmanship

Anya Hindmarch Puts Latest Handbag Collection to Work

TO THE GRINDSTONE: It’s still August, but Anya Hindmarch is already smelling the autumn leaves and freshly sharpened pencils with a back-to-school style capsule collection called Bags That Work, five styles for women who live to organize and compartmentalize.
The collection is a mix of cross-body and tote bags for day, including the Vere Satchel with its zip-flap front and multiple inside compartments; the Double Zipped Chain, a rectangular number made from a series of envelope-style pouches, and the Ebury Zipped Tote, made to fit a computer or iPad.
There’s also the Nevis Tote, which allows devices to be stored upright, and the Vere Tote, which features the same zip-flap front as its smaller namesake.
Bags can be customized by adding a charm — such as a mink fried egg, a chubby leather heart or a fuzzy pair of red cherries — or by changing the strap. Pockets inside the bags are labeled for phone, cards and coins.
“I love things that work — and deliver — and I find organization deeply exciting,” said Hindmarch, adding that these bags are meant for women who jump from cars to trains and planes, and who need to find their pens, phones, notepads or board minutes quickly.

Dior Homme Goes to Work on Denim

Dior Homme‘s Kris Van Assche has an affinity for denim. That much is obvious simply by looking at his expanded 28-item denim line for spring 2018. Details include the silver-embossed on black leather Dior logo, which was repositioned from the inside of garments to become a form of embellishment on the outside, and embroidered roses as patches on jacket shoulders with the word “Roses” inscribed below.
The brand on Monday unveiled a pop-up shop, which will showcase through Feb. 18 the collection at Patron of the New in Manhattan’s TriBeCa. That will be followed on Feb. 15 by an in-store shop at 424 Fairfax in Los Angeles, scheduled to operate through Feb. 25.
If the collection seems compact, the attention lavished upon it suggests that denim could become a permanent category for Dior Homme. There’s also the fact that the collection is being showcased in pop-up shops in seven international cities, an indication that this is no fly-by-night project. Besides Printemps Haussmann in Paris, where Dior Denim is available through March 15, pop-ups are set to bow in London, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo.
“Dior Homme is continuously evolving,” said Renaud De Lesquen, president and chief executive officer North America at Christian Dior Couture and

Dressember Puts Dresses to Work Against Sex Trafficking

Many people go through rotations of dresses every December for countless holiday and New Year’s parties, but for those participating in Dressember, getting dolled up comes with a dose of do-gooding.
“Dressember is an annual campaign where people wear dresses every day during the month of December as a way to raise awareness and money for anti-trafficking organizations,” the organization’s co-founder and chief executive officer Blythe Hill explains. “We focus specifically on sex trafficking, but there are all forms of trafficking as well that go into it. “
Hill got the idea for the dress-a-day style challenge in college, and later connected it with her passion for eradicating sex trafficking.
“There are more people alive today in slavery than ever before in history – the numbers are upwards of 36 million people. It’s a $ 150 billion industry and the vast majority of people trapped in trafficking are women and girls. It’s one of the fastest growing criminal industries,” she says. “When I started hearing about it I was in college and I just felt this immediate urgency to do something about it. KING’S CROSS CARHARTT: Carhartt Work In Progress, the fashion proposition from the American workwear brand, has opened its first London flagship in the newly-revitalized neighborhood near King’s Cross train station.
Located at 2 Pancras Square, near Nike, &OtherStories and Jigsaw, the 2,500-square feet store spans two levels and also houses a coffee shop. It carries the full Carhartt WIP men’s and women’s ranges and collaborations, with prices ranging from 25 pounds for a watch beanie, to 400 pounds for outerwear.
The interiors are meant to channel a “rugged utilitarianism” with canvas wall panels and display units designed in hues of brown and tan. Floors are done in concrete while aluminium lamps hang from the ceiling. Designer Faye Toogood created the post-industrial brass fixtures as well as the overall look of the store.
Brand director Wilfried Atzert said Carhartt specifically wanted to be in the neighborhood. “King’s Cross has had a transformation. The area is home to Central Saint Martins as well as London’s Eurostar international terminal. Christina El Moussa Returns to Work with Ex-Husband Tarek After Splitting from Boyfriend Doug Spedding

A year and a half after splitting, Christina and Tarek El Moussa still have a strong professional relationship.

The Flip or Flop stars were spotted working together in Yorba Linda, California, on Thursday, as news broke that Christina, 34, had split from her boyfriend Doug Spedding, 55.

In Touch first reported that Christina had ended her romance with the businessman, who has entered an in-patient rehabilitation center for addiction issues.

A source confirmed the breakup to PEOPLE, saying Christina “supports Doug’s decision to seek treatment and remains in contact to support his recovery.”

Christina and Spedding had been dating since this summer. In July, PEOPLE reported that the pair, who were linked before her marriage to Tarek, had reconnected.

“Their children are only a few years apart, so they’ve been doing a lot of activities with the kids: ice skating, swimming, BBQs, just low-key stuff at home,” a source said about Christina and Spedding, who is a father of six. “Christina respects that he is a great father; he’s always present when it comes to his children and isn’t distracted by his phone and social media. They’re just taking it slow and enjoying their time together.”

RELATED VIDEO: Christina and Tarek El Moussa’s Divorce Has Not Stopped Their Business Relationship

Christina and Tarek, 36, quietly separated in May 2016 following a bizarre incident involving a gun.

She submitted her divorce documents in August, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the breakup and requesting joint legal and physical custody of their two children: daughter Taylor, 6, and son Brayden, 2.

They continue to film Flip or Flop together.

The two are also co-executive producers on Chi-Town Flop, which follows husband-and-wife team Bryan and Maira Segal as they transform homes in the Windy City using the same model as Tarek and Christina’s successful series.

“We’ve been working together for a really long time,” Tarek told PEOPLE in August of the former couple’s dynamic as business partners. “It’s our job. Obviously, we know each other really well.”

At Work: Simon Mitchell, Retail Architect

LONDON — London-based architect Simon Mitchell was exposed to design at an early age, having grown up with a mother who was a seamstress and a father who worked in the printing trade. After winning a design competition in his hometown of Exeter, England, which singled him out as “Architect of the Future” at age eight, Mitchell went on to specialize in retail architecture and to cofound the architectural firm Sybarite — whose name alludes to his and his partner Torquil McIntosh’s love of good food and good wine.
Sybarite is behind the design concepts of stores such as Marni, Joseph and, most recently, the new SKP department store in Beijing, China.
“We have worked on more than 2,000 retail locations in the last 15 years; that could be from a shop-in-shop to a flagship boutique to a department store. So I’ve been exposed to hundreds and hundreds of brands and cultures,” said Mitchell, highlighting his firm’s approach of customizing each store design to represent the ethos of the brand rather than developing his own signature style. “What we want to do is reflect the brand and its consumer in a new way and create innovative concepts, so that the consumer understands the

At Work: Retail Architect David Montalba Dresses for Comfort, Client

David Montalba, founder of Montalba Architects in Santa Monica, Calif., believes clothes and buildings should fit like a favorite pair of jeans or T-shirt.
“It’s about creating a comfortable environment, a place where people can be dynamic. Similarly with clothes, you want to wear clothes that make you feel comfortable first and make the people around you feel comfortable, much like the designs we create,” says the award-winning 45-year-old, who has created retail stores in Los Angeles and other cities for Carolina Herrera, The Row, Reformation and Raquel Allegra, to name a few.
Like most people in his profession, Montalba wears either all black or all dark blue every day — not just to the office but in all aspects of his life. When asked whether he spends more on clothes for work or play, he said, “I don’t distinguish between the two.” What about on the weekend when he’s driving his kids to their sports games? “Then I’m just wearing my gym clothes, either a Lululemon shirt or NikeLab,” he says.
Montalba’s style hasn’t strayed much in the last two decades: “I might slowly find myself getting a little more refined and wanting to wear the same things more and more. Now I

Do Vitamin Supplements Really Work For Colds?

The Question: Will supplements really prevent a cold or shorten one from lingering?

The Answer: Dietary supplements aimed at cold prevention, like Zicam or Emergen-C, sound miraculous in theory. But do they actually help to eliminate that nasty bug? The answer from experts is a resounding “no.”

Zicam promises to be a “cold shortening” homeopathic remedy. It is available in a variety of forms, all of which use zinc at the major active ingredient. Emergen-C is a popular dietary supplement made from vitamin C which claims to provide extra support to the immune system. Another variation of the dissolvable powder includes melatonin for sleep and relaxation.

“Nothing cures the cold,” Kathleen Duggan, an adjunct professor at the School of Nursing at the University of San Francisco, told HuffPost. “They’re trying to promote the antioxidant capacity of vitamin C…and there is not much in the literature that supports vitamin C preventing a cold.”

Research suggests that a vitamin overload will do very little to prevent a cold or help you out once you’re in the throes of one. But not only that, taking too much can have consequential health effects.

How natural supplements could backfire

Just one serving of Emergen-C provides 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C, which is well above the recommended daily dose. Adult men should get 90 milligrams a day, and adult women should get 75 milligrams per day, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Most people meet these requirements through their diet because it is easy to do so ― for example, just a half cup of red peppers is enough to get your daily values. And statistically, most American men and women meet the recommended daily intake, according to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

The mineral is responsible for helping the body’s immune system, but the upper limit for vitamin C is 2,000 milligrams per day. While vitamin C is a low-toxicity mineral, it is important to note that consuming above the 2,000 milligram limit could possibly lead to diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramps, according to the National Institute of Health.

Zinc, on the other hand, is actually dangerous if you overdo it. Your body requires only a minimal amount of the supplement to reap its healthy benefits, which includes helping the immune system fight of viruses and bacteria. Men need just 11 milligrams a day, women just 8 milligrams, according to the Institute of Medicine. Most people get enough zinc through their diet.

“I would definitely not recommend people taking individual supplementation of zinc,” Duggan said. “There’s just not enough research to support that [zinc supplements prevent illness]. There just isn’t ― and there’s a lot in the literature to support [the toxicity].”

The upper limit for zinc for adults is 40 milligrams per day. Beyond that, people can experience nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, stomach cramps, diarrhea and headaches. And, ironically, too much zinc over a long course of time can actually decrease immunity, according to the National Institute of Health.

Furthermore, some zinc nasal sprays and gels have been linked to losing the ability to smell.

Skip the nonsense and eat your nutrients instead

“I am extremely in support ― especially in terms of diet and nutrients ― of doing things the most natural way possible,” Colin Robinson, a clinical instructor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, told HuffPost. That means instead of taking supplements, you should aim to get zinc and vitamin C from a healthy, well-rounded diet of fruits and vegetables, he explained.

Oysters are high in zinc. Red meat, crab, lobsters and fortified breakfast cereals will also do the trick. Beans, nuts, whole grains and dairy products provide a bit of zinc, too, according to the National Institute of Health.

Research shows to eat more sweet red peppers, orange juice, grapefruit juice and kiwi for vitamin C. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts and strawberries are good sources as well.

Eating this way will help you hit the recommended levels of each nutrient, as well as contribute to your health overall.

Additionally, here’s surefire way you can effectively and safely lower your risk of getting a nasty bug ― and it’s free: Scrub those hands. Research shows it’s one of the most foolproof ways to halt germs from getting into your system

“You know the best way to prevent a cold? Wash your hands three to four times a day. And get plenty of sleep,” Duggan stressed.

It’s age-old advice from someone with nothing to sell. Sounds right to us.

Cuba Gooding Jr. Breaks His Silence on His Father’s Death as He Returns to Work One Day Later

Cuba Gooding Jr. is staying strong.

The American Horror Story actor was spotted Friday on the Toronto set of his new film, Life in a Year, just one day after the death of his father, Cuba Gooding Sr.

Sporting a bright blue jacket, black pants, and grey sneakers, the Oscar-winner was seen with his costar, Jaden Smith, looking in good spirits as they walked and talked together.

Life in a Year follows the story of a 17-year-old boy who sets out to give his girlfriend an entire life after discovering that she is dying. Cara Delevingne will portray Smith’s girlfriend.

Also on Friday, Gooding Jr. broke his silence about his father’s death, sharing a photo of one of his father’s albums and writing simply, “Eternal.”

Gooding Sr., a popular soul singer in the 1970s, died Thursday at the age of 72. The singer was found slumped over in his silver Jaguar, which was parked on a street in Woodland Hills, CA, according to TMZ.

The fire department responded to the scene and attempted CPR, but could not resuscitate him.

Gooding Jr. spoke of his father during an episode of Inside the Actors Studio that aired earlier this year.

“I remember, one of my earliest memories … he would perform at Disneyland, and after his performances, they would close it off to the general public and all the performers’ kids would go on the rides as many times as they’d want,” Cuba remembered. “He would pull me up on stage with him and make me finish the song because I’d seen him perform all the time. It was a lot of feeling like, ‘I come from royalty.’”

How To Make This Glitter Eyeliner From Fashion Week Work In Real Life

The looks at New York Fashion Week are usually not what you’d call easy to pull off. Every once in a while, though, we’re blessed with a few things that can ― and should ― be recreated in real life.

This season, we’ve teamed up with fashion illustrator Emily Brickel Edelson to sketch out some of our favorite fashion and beauty looks from Fashion Week, including this glittery eye makeup from the Tadashi Shoji show on Thursday.

This look is extra dramatic for the runway, but you can tweak it by going a little lighter on the glitter or by applying fewer coats of mascara.

Swipe a bit of eyeshadow primer under your eye (we’re obsessed with Urban Decay’s primer potion, $ 20), then use a wet eyeliner brush to apply the glitter of your choosing (we like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ cosmetic glitters, $ 15). Finish off with a few coats of mascara (like L’Oreal’s Voluminous mascara, $ 5.82) and a light swipe of white or pale pink eyeliner on your waterline (there are two great options here and here).

Voila, you’re ready for a birthday party, a trip to the supermarket or New Year’s Eve… really early.

The Science of Awe And Why It Matters At Work

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

Awe has been getting increased press lately. Along with mindfulness and compassion, awe is now the subject of scientific research at the University of California, Berkeley, and other leading institutions around the world. Dacher Keltner, a psychologist at UC Berkeley, has shown that awe leads to greater humility, curiosity, innovation, happiness, and a desire to contribute to the world. Which makes it a pretty natural fit for the workplace—who doesn’t want employees and managers running the show with greater innovation and better working relationships?

Awe is often described as a heightened awareness of beauty and mystery, and it’s most commonly induced when we are among natural wonders or with inspiring leaders. Most of the research on awe has focused on taking people out into nature and documenting the consequent reduction of their stress levels and increase in creativity. But what about the awe we feel when in the presence of an incredibly designed building or museum or cathedral? Why aren’t we trying to transfer that experience to our work lives? Design has a role to play in this, and IDEO design director, Ingrid Fetell Lee, is currently working on a related topic for her upcoming book, The Aesthetics of Joy.

“My real focus is emotion,” says Lee. “I’ve been researching design and joy, and I look at the way the built environment affects our well-being.”

Lee says that from a practical perspective, when thinking about cultivating more awe at work, aspects such as light, colors, and textures need to be taken into consideration.“High ceilings, vertical dimensions, big spaces—these all create a shift in perspective,” says Lee. “You understand your own scale in a different way. For awe, vastness is key.”

In most office buildings, the most awe-inspiring space is the lobby, devoted to visitors and those in transit—which is short-sighted. The people who would benefit most from awe—and cause the company to benefit too—are the very people who work there.

For today’s modern work cultures, where temperament awareness is on the rise and where creativity and innovation are often highly valued, Lee says that “having a space for awe to break you out of your execution-oriented mindset could be an asset.” Since we have moved beyond a factory mindset when it comes to work, designers are no longer confined to thinking about maximum productivity. Their thinking can now also include ways to arrive at creative insights—this is where awe can play a role.

“Awe is good for perspective-shifting,” says Lee.

Keltner says that “relying upon aesthetic principles is going to make people more curious and better at scientific reasoning.” “Awe triggers a sense of wonder,” he adds.

The challenge, says Keltner, is how to build mini “awe interventions” throughout the day in order to sustain the shift in perspective. He and his colleagues at the Greater Good Science Center will soon begin researching whether awe walks benefit the brains of older people. Awe walks also could benefit CEOs, executives, and employees across the board, especially if the workplace setting is not conducive to awe. Indeed, integrating nature into building design has started to take hold, especially with Silicon Valley’s popular vertical gardens, known as “living walls.”

Other potential awe interventions include:

  • Awe journaling while at work—a 5-minute break during lunch to meditate on what’s just outside your window or across your building. This exercise could be related to nature or people. It’s a way to document shifts in perspective and feel awe more often in daily life.
  • Sharing awe experiences in group settings, which Keltner has tried with great success. Get a few co-workers together during lunch or after work to share their experiences of awe. This could be made more relevant or workplace appropriate if the focus is on inspiring leaders who have induced awe amongst the group.
  • Reading about awe-filled experiences as a way to vicariously experience awe. Set two daily reminders to browse stories of awe online to get a quick dose while at work.Sidetracked Magazine is a good place to start.
  • Taking a more visual route to the emotion of awe. While on break or on the subway, take time to check out awe-inducing videos on your phone. Jason Silva’s Shots of Awe is a great place to start.

For Keltner, nature is key, and it’s where most of his research has taken place. Climbing and backpacking have helped with his own anxiety.

For me, my daily walks in nature or right in my own neighborhood are sources of awe. Observing the flowers, trees, clouds, and bicyclists puts me in a state of calm reflection, and I notice more of the perspective-shifting characteristics and occurrences all around me. I find the same with travel. Being on a long flight or exploring somewhere new puts me in “observer mode,” and I find I’m more receptive to the awe that presents itself everywhere.

When I feel the need for a heightened level of inspiration—another kind of awe—I usually dive into my curiosity of the moment by learning everything I can. That usually means reading up on the latest science, psychology, and neurodiversity research.

Readers, what’s your go-to source of awe?

Keen Footwear Women’s 1012784 Steel Toe EH Two-Tone Leather Work Shoes

If it’s been a hard day’s work – or play – your feet will let you know it. Wearing the wrong women’s shoes can be a huge contributor to soreness, fatigue, and burnout, no matter the task. Luckily, Keen Women’s 1012784 Midnight Navy Blue/Hot Coral Detroit Steel Toe Water-Resistant Leather Low Work Shoes are here to give your feet the support they need.Designed for long-lasting comfort on the job site or the hiking trail, these Keen shoes are built light yet in an incredibly durable design. The rugged uppers are made from water-resistant Nubuck leather and reflective webbing for a combination of wetness protection and breathability. Sometimes the work place, or the hiking trail, can be a hazardous place, so this women’s footwear is fitted with slip-resistant outsoles with strong traction control. They’re resistant to the degrading effects of oil and non-marking for use on all surfaces. Your toes are also protected by the asymmetrical left and right steel toes, which cover your most vulnerable spots while maintaining a low profile and lightweight. These steel toe shoes meet or exceed ASTM F2412-11 and F2413-11 I/75 and C/75 EH standards for compression and impacts. The EH also indicates that you’ll have quality protection against electrical hazards. Your feet will be wrapped in relief once they’re inside these leather shoes, where removable metatomical dual-density EVA footbeds provide superior cushioning and arch support. Hydrophobic/hydrophilic two-zone comfort lining gives your feet breathability that absorbs and evaporates moisture more quickly, keeping you drier and free from friction and fungus. Contoured heel locks hold your heels in place comfortably within the safety toe shoes, preventing the shifting and rubbing that can lead to blisters. With all of that technology packed into one little pair of Keen footwear, you might be expecting something clunky and hideous – but these are some pretty stylish-looking kicks. Student Transforms College Rejection Letter Into Viral Work Of Art

She transformed a negative into a positive.

When Claudia Vulliamy found out that the prestigious Oxford University in England had turned her down for a place on its classics course on Wednesday, she was understandably disappointed.

But she didn’t get downhearted. Instead, the 18-year-old student at Camden School for Girls in London hacked up the letter of rejection and worked it into a painting.

Her mom, Louisa Saunders, posted a photograph of her creation to Twitter (above) and the image is now going viral.

“When I got home to see the painting, I laughed, because it was funny and also sassy,” Saunders told The Huffington Post on Saturday.

“It was nice, because I could see that she wasn’t feeling too sad about the rejection. I know it breaks some people’s hearts,” she added. “I really admired her spirit, but I wasn’t very surprised because it’s fairly typical of her ― she’s always been creative.”

Saunders’ Twitter feed was soon flooded with positive comments about her daughter’s inspired work of art:

Vuilliamy, meanwhile, told HuffPost she was “really surprised” by her artwork going viral but was “so glad that it has cheered people up.”

Usually social media can be quite brutal but it made my week,” she added to ITV News. “I just thought it was a bit of a bummer not to get in. I felt like making it into something.”

She now hopes to study at Durham University ― and continues posting new artwork, such as the piece below depicting her mom, to Instagram:

Spring Step Pro Women’s Slip-On Black Manila Slip-Resistant Work Shoes

It’s not a secret that women go through pain to look beautiful. There’s a lot of plucking and trimming and waxing and shaving — well, you pretty much know the drill. It resists rain, wind, wear, and pretty much everything but whiny co-workers (we’re still looking for work shoes that do that). The cushioned insoles of these oil-resistant shoes are styled to be removable, and that makes them easy to clean. Arch support is built right in to give your steps the lift they need. The arch support prevents muscle strain and pain. Quick-drying material lines the inside of these Spring Step shoes to keep you more comfortable. The anti-microbial lining resists and repels odor-causing bacteria. It wicks moisture away from your skin to prevent and manage sweat. The shock-absorbing soles of these moisture-wicking shoes are made in a cushioning, triple density design to give you three layers of protection from the hard world beneath your feet. The soles are made with polyurethane, lightweight stuff that weighs less than rubber and absorbs even more impact. Non-skid rubber plugs are integrated into the design of these skid-resistant shoes to keep your stride steady and give you gripping traction everywhere you go. We’re not going to keep these Spring Step Manila Skid-Resistant Slip-On Black Women’s Shoes a secret any longer.
