Obsidian’s Creative Team Talks ‘The Outer Worlds,’ ‘Fallout,’ More

It’s been a busy few years for Obsidian Entertainment. Originally founded in 2003 by a slew of industry vets, Obsidian spent its early years working mostly on licensed content, like the fan-favorite “Fallout” spinoff “New Vegas,” released in 2010. After a spat of financial troubles, the studio launched a 2012 crowd-funding campaign for an original […]

Boy Meets World’s Danielle Fishel Marries Jensen Karp: ‘The Best Day of My Life’

Danielle Fishel is married!

The Boy Meet’s World alum has tied the knot with Drop the Mic executive producer Jensen Karp, she confirmed on social media over the weekend.

“Mr. & Mrs. Karp. Established 11/04/2018,” Fishel, 37, wrote on Instagram alongside a wedding photo that showed off the delicate, lace short-sleeves of her wedding gown.

Sharing another photo from the nuptials — taken by B.O.B. Photography — Karp, 38, wrote, “Today I married my soulmate. We were surrounded by family and friends and it was the best day of my life.”

He added, “I also ate 3 donuts after dinner. Unrelated. @daniellefishel, I love you so much and thank you for giving me this smile.”

Guests included Fishel’s Boy Meets World costars Ben Savage and Will Friedle, along with Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park and Karp’s groomsman John Mayer, who serenaded the newlyweds with his cover of Beyoncé‘s “XO” for their first dance.

“Jensen brought many new and wonderful friends into my life and the friendship of @johnmayer is at the top of the list. His immense talent is only overshadowed by his humor, his heart, his sincerity, his loyalty, his candor, and his generous spirit,” Fishel captioned a video from the wedding.

“We are beyond grateful and thrilled that he was not only a groomsman but agreed to sing our first dance song. I’m obsessed with his cover of this song (XO by @beyoncé) and he played it for us live at the Forum last year simply because I told him how much I loved it. Thank you, John, for all of it.”

How Rockstar Is Making Its Open Worlds Even Better

“We’ve always tried to make these worlds places you can get lost in. Feel like they exist when you’re not even in them – like they’re waiting for you.”

That’s the kind of world Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, wants to build.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar’s first original game in five years, and the first it’s built specifically for the current generation of consoles. It’s a fact that’s easy to forget with GTA V still dominating sales charts and amidst the constant updates to GTA Online.

Work on Read Dead 2 began eight years ago, as production drew to a close on its predecessor. “I think when we finished this one…” Nelson breaks off and gestures towards a screen behind him in his Edinburgh office; it’s running Red Dead Redemption on an old Xbox 360 debug console. “I always like to keep it close by, just to stay familiar with it and the feelings it evokes.” The TV displays the game’s title screen, which teases the player with a sliver of the game’s natural beauty.

Corey Feldman Shares Photo of the ‘World’s Smallest Knife Wound’ After Alleged Stabbing

Corey Feldman has shared a photo of the injury he sustained in an alleged attack on Tuesday.

“THE WORLDS SMALLEST KNIFE WOUND…..OR?!?!” he captioned a close-up photo of his abdomen with what appears to be a small, circular red wound.

“YES I WAS ATTACKED 2 DAYS AGO, YES THEY USED SOME SORT OF SHARP WEAPON, AND YES IT WENT INTO MY BODY!” he said. “THIS IS WHAT THE SCAR LOOKS LIKE NOW, OBVIOUSLY IF IT WAS A KNIFE I GOT VERY LUCKY & IM BLESSED! IF IT WAS A SYRINGE, I WILL PRAY 4 THE BEST RESULTS! GOD BLESS!! #Kids2#COREYSTRUTHISCOMING#PRESERVEINNOCENCE.”

Feldman, 46, claims he was attacked on Ventura Boulevard in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. According to the former child star, three men approached him in his car and one stabbed him while his security was distracted.

RELATED: Corey Feldman Details the Terrifying Moment He Was Allegedly Stabbed While in His Car

His attorney Perry Wander told PEOPLE the alleged attacked was motivated by road rage. Feldman, who in recent months has publicly spoken out against an alleged “pedophile ring” in Hollywood, has said he believes the attack was in retaliation.

Want to keep up on the latest from PEOPLE? Sign up for our daily newsletter to get our best stories of the day delivered straight to your inbox.

“I do know for a fact that that conspiracy has to do with every false accusation that you’ve heard about me in the media within the last six months,” he told TMZ. “And I do know who the organizer of that conspiracy is and I do know who it’s being lead by — and I do know why. It all has to do with the pedophilia claims that I’ve made.”

LAPD spokeswoman Officer Rosario Herrera told PEOPLE on Tuesday there is “no suspect at this time and the investigation is ongoing.”

Feldman, who speculated he had possibly been stabbed with a syringe, was tested for infections after the alleged incident. His bodyguard Jeff V., who was with Feldman at the time of the alleged attack, told TMZ on Thursday that hospital tests have come back clean and clear of any hard drugs or infectious diseases.

There’s A New World’s Largest Heart-Shaped Pizza

Back in 2015, The Huffington Post partnered with Los Angeles’ Big Mama’s & Papa’s Pizzeria for a Valentine’s Day goal of creating the largest heart-shaped pizza ever. While the Guinness World Records claims the pizzeria already made the “largest pizza commercially available,” the team ended up gifting pizza lovers a heart-shaped pizza stretching about 47 inches wide.

This year, the restaurant reached out to HuffPost about attempting the feat again, this time with a plan to make the pizza even bigger ― 54 inches across.

As a publication that has a whole page dedicated to the subject of pizza, such an accomplishment couldn’t go unreported.

The first time around, the Big Mama’s & Papa’s Pizzeria donated their pizza to the ER Team at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center. Arthur Mkrtchyan of BMPP told HuffPost that for this year’s pizza, the restaurant ended up “delivering to Children’s Hospital nurses, thanking them for their care and love they provide.” Specifically, the pizza went to the Child Life program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which specializes in improving the quality of life for both patients and their families as they deal with the stress of illness and hospitalization.

Ever since the creation of the original pizza a couple years ago, multiple chains such as Papa John’s and Pizza Hut have started offering their own heart-shaped pizzas. Of course, those are nowhere near as big as BMPP’s heart.

Here’s the pizza with the Children’s Hospital team.

And preparation for the pizza.

BMPP obviously has a massive pizza oven.

Here’s some freshly made heart-shaped pizza.

And the pizza delivery car with a special compartment on the roof.

Here are the blueprints.

Abraham: The World’s First Psychopath

Abraham: The World’s First Psychopath

If you consider it impossible that the True God of moral perfection would ever order a father to make a human sacrifice of his innocent son for no reason other than to demonstrate absolute, mindless obedience, then the God of Abraham cannot be God. So who is he? The ancient Gnostics had the obvious answer – he’s Satan. Doesn’t that immediately explain the horrific history of the Abrahamic religions and their grotesque propensity for violence and terrorism? Abrahamism is a terrorist religion, led by a terrorist God who demands unwavering obedience even when it contradicts morality. The Jews, Christians and Muslims who trace their common ancestry to Abraham are thus revealed as evil Devil worshippers. This book provides a theological and philosophical dissection of the tale of Abraham from the Jewish, Christian and Muslim perspectives. It reveals Abraham as one of the most evil men in history and unquestionably the world’s first psychopath. Like the Nazis, he placed obedience to a tyrannical monster above human life, even that of his own son. In the Islamic telling of the tale, “Satan” three times pleads for Ishmael’s life, and Abraham violently drives him away by pelting him with stones. When “God” orders the murder of the innocent and “Satan” begs for the innocent to be saved, which is truly “God”? Abrahamism is the logical inversion of good and evil. It has elevated Satan to the throne of God. Do not read this book if you are a closed-minded Abrahamist or a conspiracy theorist. This material is not for petty, cheap, narrow-minded religious fanatics and those who believe in Reptilians. It is provided by the Pythagorean Illuminati, the oldest secret society on earth. The Illuminati subscribe to the Gnostic religion of Illumination.

Heacket, ‘World’s Most Durable Heated Jacket,’ Readies for Launch

HOT HOT HEAT: Owen Zhang is a self-professed lover of the outdoors.
After getting his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the The University of Minnesota Twin Cities in Minneapolis, Zhang traveled home to Shenzhen, China to launch Meltpartners, a company that manufactures and retails outdoor sporting goods. In 2014, he linked with a company there called Heacket — a play on the words “heat” and “jacket” — and together the two set out to create “the world’s most durable heated jacket.”
Two years later, a new line of jackets is ready for its debut. The Heacket team has set up an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to test the market, where interested buyers can preorder the style at a discounted price.
WWD received an early sample of the jacket, a chic navy blue style with a generous hood, red contrast zipper detailing and a wind and water-resistant outer shell. The jacket is also offered in pink and black in a range of sizes for men and women. There are four battery-operated controlled heating zones — both battery and charger are included with purchase — and the jacket takes three seconds to warm up.

“Nothing Comes Easy”: A Chat with Adrian Steirn About ‘The World’s Most Wanted Leopard’

2016-12-07-1481114769-994687-DSC_0849.jpg

Sometimes nature gets caught up in the crossfires of conflicts and human issues. In the case of the Caucasian leopard, also known at the Persian leopard, the species has been stuck in war zones, and confined to barren, uninhabitable terrains. While our President Elect may not believe in global warming, he can’t deny that the world is in upheaval and migrations, by the millions and fueled by feuds, are happening around the globe. That leaves animals, often ones already on the endangered species list, to fend for themselves.

The positioning of the natural habitat of the Caucasian leopard puts its survival at risk. Listed as officially “Endangered on the IUCN Red List,” this large feline, the largest subspecies of the leopards, is now confined to the greater part of the Western Caucasus, between Iran, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, with a few more remaining in Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

It is in fact in Azerbaijan that the upcoming Nat Geo WILD documentary The World’s Most Wanted Leopard takes place. Following filmmaker (and in my opinion diplomat, storyteller, nature aficionado and all around cool guy) Adrian Steirn and his team, which includes local guide and “Leopard Man” Babakhan Rakhmanov and Victor Lukarevsky, a world-renowned Russian big cat specialist, we the audience find ourselves in the midst of a thriller, complete with twists and turns worthy of a mystery narrative film. Will these men find the elusive leopard, and will they be able to outdo it in capturing its image for posterity? The answer is one I won’t give away, but lets just say the outcome of this film will affect us all, in real life. It’s that important.

I caught up with Steirn to find out more about his journey, which was aided in part by an organization in Azerbaijan called IDEA. Here’s what he had to say about his voyage to find this elusive, beautiful, mystical big cat, the result of which airs in December worldwide on Nat Geo WILD. And what we can all do, starting today, to help save the world.

In your documentary, you say something that really struck me — “I pick up my camera to do one thing — make positive change”. Shouldn’t that be the responsibility of all human beings, to work for a better place? And shouldn’t all artists pick up their artistic tools to make social relations, climate, human existence and nature better?

Adrian Steirn: Conservation is self-preservation; so making positive change is absolutely a shared responsibility. But humans are inherently self-serving. We only start to care when the water runs out, so to speak — we can always try to do more.

Do you have any updates on Babakhan, your wonderfully charming guide in Azerbaijan?

Steirn: Babakhan is immensely proud to know that the documentary is going around the world. He is an ardent conservationist and deeply appreciates the support.

What has happened since you filmed in 2014, with the Caucasian leopard, but also with the initiative started by you and IDEA?

Steirn: IDEA and the government of Azerbaijan are working immensely hard to ensure the continued protection of the Caucasian leopard. They are looking at breeding and relocation programs and pouring resources into their national parks and holistic conservation.

Do you think we, as human beings, hold the power of one, to make a difference as singular persons?

Steirn: One person can always make change by creating motivation for many. It starts with the individual, who has to empower a community.

You clearly are part filmmaker, part preservationist, part diplomat, part cross country athlete and all world saver. Does it ever prove challenging to be Adrian Steirn, and in which situations?

Steirn: Nothing comes easy. We only have finite time and resources on our planet. By surrounding myself with capable, resourceful people, I have been able to overcome certain hurdles. But nothing is ever as easy as you think it’ll be starting out.

And to someone who has never met you and doesn’t know you, how would you describe yourself?

Steirn: As a photographer and filmmaker with a high level of determination. I don’t give up easily.

Three things we can all begin to do today, that will help save the world?

Steirn: Educate yourself. Be empathetic. Find ways to take people with you — don’t preach at your audience.

Transnational Networks and Cross-Religious Exchange in the Seventeenth-Century Mediterranean and Atlantic Worlds

Transnational Networks and Cross-Religious Exchange in the Seventeenth-Century Mediterranean and Atlantic Worlds

In 1644, the news that Antonio de Montezinos claimed to have discovered the Lost Tribes of Israel in the jungles of South America spread across Europe fuelling an already febrile atmosphere of messianic and millenarian expectation. By tracing the process in which one set of apocalyptic ideas was transmitted across the Christian and Islamic worlds, this book provides fresh insight into the origin and transmission of eschatological constructs, and the resulting beliefs that blurred traditional religious boundaries and identities. Beginning with an investigation of the impact of Montezinos’s narrative, the next chapter follows the story to England, examining how the Quaker messiah James Nayler was viewed in Europe. The third chapter presents the history of the widely reported – but wholly fictitious – story of the sack of Mecca, a rumour that was spread alongside news of Sabbatai Sevi. The final chapter looks at Christian responses to the Sabbatian movement, providing a detailed discussion of the cross-religious and international representations of the messiah. The conclusion brings these case studies together, arguing that the evolving beliefs in the messiah and the Lost Tribes between 1648 and 1666 can only be properly understood by taking into account the multitude of narrative threads that moved between networks of Jews, Conversos, Catholics and Protestants from one side of the Atlantic to the far side of the Mediterranean and back again. By situating this transmission in a broader historical context, the book reveals the importance of early-modern crises, diasporas and newsgathering networks in generating the eschatological constructs, disseminating them on an international scale, and transforming them through this process of intercultural dissemination into complex new hybrid religious conceptions, expectations, and identities.

See How The World’s Most Beautiful Ballerinas Are Taking Fashion By Storm

Move over A-list celebrities and big-time supermodels—the ballerinas are here! The fashion industry has been flirting with the dancer for awhile now and another company has just joined the list. Wolford, maker of both high-quality tights and Kim Kardashian West’s favorite dress-slash-skirt, has debuted some stunning images created in connection with photographer Dane Shitagi’s Ballerina Project, an Instagram-friendly collection of the world’s top dancers striking gorgeous poses on city streets and in leafy parks.

Here’s Boren in Paris, wearing Wolford.

The images were created to go along with the company’s new “ballerina kits,” specially packaged combos of pieces like leg warmers, tights, and bodysuits that dancers might need during a rehearsal, intel gleaned from Wolford’s ongoing relationship with American Ballet Theatre dancers Isabella Boylston and Stephanie Williams.

Prior to these pointe-shoed beauties, the last ballet megastar to attract our attention was Misty Copeland, making big waves with her impressive Under Armour ads.

Misty Copeland for Under Armour

For fall 2014, AG Jeans relied heavily on ballerinas to show off how very stretchy its newest denim launch was. Gap jumped on the trend early, shooting San Francisco Ballet’s Yuan Yuan Tan back in 2012.

The ballet love affair is nothing new either. Way back in 2007, fixture company Brizo paired with Jason Wu and shot a campaign with dancers wearing Wu gowns and posing (beautifully) underwater. The relationship between luxury brands and the dance world has also resulted in a few campaigns featuring high-profile industry stars, though not until recently was the actual dance on display. Watch company Movado, for one, was a large sponsor of New York City Ballet and ran ads featuring principals like Paloma Herrera and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Jilted Bride Penned The World’s Most Depressing eBay Listing

Wedding dresses for sale on eBay are a dime a dozen. But this listing is different — this woman’s dress has a sob story to tell.

“Rejected wedding dress seeks lasting love and holy matrimony,” a UK listing that went up earlier this week reads. From there, the dress takes the reins and spins its sad, sad tale.

ebay

“I was supposed to be worn at City Hall in New York,” the size 8 ivory lace Diane von Furstenberg number says. “I was going to be the main attraction of a 60s wedding theme. I was going to be low-key, but elegant (I still am, for that matter).”

But then the owner and her Brooklyn-based hubby-to-be ended their relationship — and things began looking pretty dismal for the dress. “She kept me in the box. Because she couldn’t bear to look at me. I am a constant reminder to her of what could have been. So she wants to sell me.”

Oof, you’re killing us, little DVF dress.

According to Metro, the would-be-bride behind the listing is a 30-year-old British woman who wishes to remain unnamed. Read her ad in its holy-God-that’s-depressing entirety below:

I was supposed to be worn at City Hall in New York.

I was going to be the main attraction of a 60s wedding theme.

I was going to be low-key, but elegant (I still am, for that matter).

I was going to complement a 60s updo, nude courts and a bouquet of Lily of the Valley.

When my owner put on a dress just like me in Selfridges, she knew I was the one so she ordered me online and had me delivered to her husband-to-be in Brooklyn.

I’m not over the top, nor am I too dressed down, and she thought she could perhaps wear me to other occasions in the future.

She thought I was a dress she could look back on and smile, not cringe at fashion faux pas (she was right).

When I arrived, she kept me sealed in my box so nothing could ruin me.

Then they split up.

And she kept me in the box.

Because she couldn’t bear to look at me.

I am a constant reminder to her of what could have been.

So she wants to sell me.

Not necessarily to a bride, but to anyone looking to give me the home I deserve.

A home where I’ll get worn and admired and dry-cleaned (as and when necessary).

She can’t take me back to DVF because they no longer stock me.

I’m limited edition, if you like.

And the first time I have been taken out of my box is for these photos.

Because who’s going to buy a dress based on a picture of a box?

I can’t wait to be worn by you (and to see the back of my cardboard confines once and for all).

Love,
Zarita (in Ivory).
xx

25 Parallel Worlds Created by Photoshop Master Michal Karcz

2015-06-02-1433251912-4048143-apocalypse_cover.jpg

Born in Warsaw, Poland, artist Michal Karcz began his visual journey with a paintbrush and canvas. As a painter, he says he developed “a vision that was hard to create with other visual techniques”–a vision he eventually brought to photography and digital art when those became his medium of choice later in life.

Nowadays, Michal busies himself creating parallel realities, often devoid of people, often post-apocalyptic, always haunting on some level.

Moody and dramatic, his imagination and formidable Photoshop skills produce “unique realities” the he says represent “places from my dreams, desire, imagination, and fears.”

Wherever they come from, they are spectacular. Detailed wide-angle shots of ‘parallel worlds’ devoid of humanity, reclaimed by nature… or aliens… or darkness itself.

As for his inspiration, Michal writes:

I can tell that music has the biggest impact on my work. It’s an inseparable element with pictures in my mind, a kind of sound illustration to a visible scenery. These two things hit me with the strongest intensity.

Tilting At Mountains: Overcoming Personal Demons To Climb the Worlds Highest Peaks

Tilting At Mountains: Overcoming Personal Demons To Climb the Worlds Highest Peaks

Climbing where only a handful of men have gone before, Edurne Pasaban is the first woman to climb all fourteen mountain peaks higher than 8,000 meters. On May 17, 2010, a 37-year-old Spaniard named Edurne Pasaban became the first woman to climb all fourteen peaks higher than 8,000 meters. This record-breaking accomplishment put the Basque woman on National Geographic’s 2010 Adventurers of the Year list. The next year, both The Alpinist and Outside magazines placed her on their Adventurers of the Year lists, too. Pasaban’s accomplishment did not come without controversy: Another woman, Korean climber Oh Eun-Sun, claimed to have completed the peaks a few weeks earlier. Later inquiries revealed that Oh Eun-Sun had failed to summit Kangchenjunga in 2009 and her claim was eventually withdrawn, leaving Edurne as the clear victor. But how did she get there? Published for the first time in English, Tilting at Mountains tells Edurne’s heartfelt and deeply personal story. She details not only how she came to climb the 8,000-meter peaks– the competitive nature of her Basque heritage played a role, as did, admittedly, an interest in handsome climbing guides but also how her love for the mountains pulled her from a deep, soul-crushing depression. The book covers her climbs on all the 8,000-meter peaks, some of which were almost cakewalks while others were climbed at great cost, including the loss of close friends.

‘World’s First Size 22 Supermodel’ Tess Holliday Lands Cover Of People Magazine

Tess Holliday, the size 22 supermodel who was signed to MiLK Model Management in January, has yet another reason to celebrate. She’s the cover star of People magazine’s 2015 body issue.

people mag

Holliday, who is known for serving up style and self-love on her Instagram account, has had a busy few months. She is the face of Torrid’s spring campaign and is responsible for the widely used #effyourbeautystandards hashtag, empowering women to wear whatever they want — regardless of their shape.

The 29-year-old beauty, who first tried to get into modeling 14 years ago, has encountered her fair share of obstacles. In her interview with People, she explains that not only was she turned down by the industry, she also faced bullying at school.

Still, Holliday pushed forward, and it’s that resilience which has led to her success. “I just knew that I could do it,” she said. “I wasn’t the best, and I still am not the best. The key to it is just doing it.”

Head to People.com for more from the interview. The body issue hits newsstands May 22.

15 Fascinating Facts That Power Shoppers Will Love About the World’s Largest H&M Store

HM-worlds-largest-store-nyc-Infograph

Power-shoppers have a new spot to add to the list of pilgramage sites: H&M has opened its largest outpost in the world in NYC’s Herald Square today. The 63,000-square-foot store has four stories and is one of the few in the U.S. to have a physical presence for its home line. But as far as numbers go, there’s so much more to know. As of today’s opening, you can count on:

—313,000 hangers
—236,500 shopping bags waiting at the registers (made of recycled material, natch)
—700 feet of retractable stanchions waiting to keep people in line*
—246 feet of rolling racks that will be used on a daily basis
—200 employees
—104 mannequins
—62 songs on the current store playlist
—35 feet of glass used for the mega-store’s front facade
—34 cash registers
—30 feet from floor to ceiling on the second floor atrium
—6 escalators
—4 floors
—2 elevators
—1 bed, on display in the home section
—countless mirrors (we were told there are so many mirrored surfaces at every turn that it’s impossible to point at a certain number)

*All that line-enforcing nylon will likely be needed when H&M’s next designer collaboration with Balmain hits.

The store isn’t the only recent big thing for the brand; it just announced it’s revamping its beauty section to include over 700 products and new lines (including eco and luxury offerings).

7 Clothing Stores With Home Decor Departments Are Truly The Best Of Both Worlds

The only thing better than picking up an amazing new outfit? Nabbing some fabulous home decor while you’re at it. We don’t mean a cute little jewelry tray you stumbled upon in the accessories section — we’re talking full-blown furniture options, lighting and all the accents you could ever hope for. Basically, everything you’d find at, say, HomeGoods or West Elm, only alongside some more fashion-oriented finds.

And the best part? Many of these home departments are either growing, like the one at Anthropologie, or are on the newer side and ready to expand their aesthetic to home accents, like the ones at Nanette Lepore.

So go ahead, get your one-stop shopping on.

ModCloth

modcloth home decor
If you have a retro taste in decor and long for the perfect quirky throw pillow, this is the place for you. Though they don’t sell furniture, ModCloth an eclectic assortment of everything else you need to make your home a bit more charming.

Urban Outfitters

From furniture to ultra-trendy shelving (and everything in between), you can find something that’s a perfect combo of hipster and chic for every room in the house. And don’t forget about the humorous accessories selection with all of the pop-culture references you can think of.

Anthropologie

anthropologie home decor
Looking for a more sophisticated, European version of Urban Outfitters’ home collection? You’ll find it here. They offer just as much, if not more, in terms of furniture, accents and gorgeous hardware, but with a more romantic, feminine touch.

H&M

hm home decor
Offering possibly the most extensive array of accents and accessories from this list, the H&M home department has something for every taste. Though you won’t find furniture here, you can find pillows for the edgier, more modern home, kitchen accessories and plates for the rustic abode and even personality-filled coasters that work in any space.

Kate Spade

kate spade home decor
The same colorfully preppy aesthetic seen in Kate Spade handbags and jewelry is what you’ll find in their kitchen and office supplies. There’s also an “odds and ends” category filled with fun finds like mustached bottle openers, and dinnerware collections that belong in the registry of your dreams.

Nanette Lepore

nanette lepore home decor

Ralph Lauren

ralph lauren home decor
If you’re looking for something clean, classic and luxurious, you cannot go wrong with Ralph Lauren. While the designer brand will cost you a bit more, the extensive array of furniture and accent pieces is pretty much as timeless as the Polo logo itself. With that in mind, go here if you’re ready to make a long-term investment in say bedding or lighting for your home.

The World’s Largest Artist Colony Is About To Be Bulldozed

In the heart of New Delhi lives what is said to be the world’s largest collective of performers — puppeteers, drummers, monkey tamers, snake charmers, singers, acrobats, and more. Their family units can include more than a dozen members. Dads and moms pass their art down to the kids. In Kathputli Colony that’s simply how things are done.

Whether tradition will continue this way is another story. The 3,000 families of Kathputli are facing a major threat to their way of life, a standoff that’s mesmerized local papers and documentarians abroad who have trekked to the so-called magician’s ghetto.

The colony began in the 1950s, when Delhi was not so dense as it is today. Now the land it sits on is central and valuable. Accordingly, powerful entities are vying for it. The civic body who owns the land, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), plans to evict all the current residents to make room for luxury flats and a shopping mall.

Kathputli means “puppeteers,” but the word has come to stand for every type of magic that happens in the 6.5-acre colony. Recently, photographer Mark Leaver visited to document the scene before it disappears. Leaver took portrait style shots of the performers in their homes, which he plans to compile into a book.

The accommodations are hardly luxurious. The houses are basic and crowded onto narrow streets that smell of sewage. Families often sleep on the floor to store their equipment. Because of the colony’s slum-like spirit, DDA officials and others behind the conversion justify the imminent bulldozing as a lifestyle improvement.

But residents argue that their unique lifestyles are necessitated by their art, and therefore unimpeachable. “Our lifestyle is our identity,” Aziz Khan, a magician who holds a Guinness World Record title, told a Time reporter who visited the colony in March. “The lifestyle of a multistory building is not for us.”

The DDA’s line is that the project caters to residents, who are slated to shift to a high-rise building billed by the government as a modern artists’ community equipped to nurture street art. Residents are largely skeptical. They doubt they can store puppets as large as 15 feet in a “cramped flat,” as the colony’s eldest resident, puppeteer Puran Bhat, told Time. And their families are larger than average. Bhat’s, for instance, comprises 18 members.

Then there is the interim housing the DDA is trying to push residents into right away, which many have criticized as shoddy and susceptible to wind damage. Last month saw incidents of police violence against men and women in the colony, including beatings by lathe and tear gas sprays. One 15-year-old boy described being dragged out of bed while sleeping, beaten and slapped, and taken to the police station, where “a senior cop asked me why we didn’t shift to the transit camp at Anand Parbat.”

Speaking to Time, one magician blamed “middle-class India” for making a mass eviction possible. Folk artists, he opined, are “at odds with the image of India as a rising power.” Many are hoping to sway the government into preserving the colony as a tourist attraction, a workaround that could address the issue of national self-image.

“We perform for the poor as well as the rich, for the Prime Minister as well as the commoner,” Bhat, the colony’s eldest resident told Time. “And we have always lived like kings without worrying about the future.”

17 Reasons Mary Poppins Will Always Be The World’s Best Nanny

“Mary Poppins” premiered in theaters 50 years ago this week, on Aug. 26, 1964. The Disney film, directed by Robert Stevenson and starring Julie Andrews, soon became a success (it was the most profitable film of 1965) and received rave reviews from critics: “I find [Mary Poppins] irresistible. Plenty of other adults will feel the same way. And, needless to say, so will the kids,” Bosley Crowther wrote in The New York Times. “Mary Poppins” won five Oscars at the 37th annual Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews and Best Song (“Chim Chim Cher-ee”).

Beyond those accolades, however, is its legacy: If “Mary Poppins” achieved one thing, it’s that even today, 50 years later, the film industry (and probably the real world) has yet to find a nanny like her. And that’s despite countless attempts by the likes of Scarlett Johansson (“The Nanny Diaries”), Emma Thompson (“Nanny McPhee”) or the late Robin Williams (“Mrs. Doubtfire”).

However, no one has managed to unseat Mary Poppins and take her job. Here are a few reasons that explain why she is so unique.

1. Her ability to organize bags …

2. … and the speed with which she can organize

3. She’s always prepared …

4. … but aware that there’s always room for improvement

5. She can go up the stairs without any effort …

6. … and is basically one step away from being able to teleport

7. Because she pays attention to small details …

8. and can move her head like this.

9. She’s capable of making a group of men dance this way …

10. … and with a single movement, she’ll leave your mouth agape

11. She’s never at a loss for words …

12. … and not afraid to speak her mind

13. She knows the secret of life …

14. … and doesn’t judge things by their appearance

15. She’s good at keeping secrets …

16. … and snaps her fingers like this.

17. So let’s applaud Mary Poppins, still the best at 50

1964 World’s Fair Towers Could Be Torn Down As NYC Debates Future Of Queens Icons

NEW YORK (AP) — They were designed for the 1964 World’s Fair as sleek, space-age visions of the future: three towers topped by flying-saucer-like platforms, and a pavilion of pillars with a suspended, shimmering roof that was billed as the “Tent of Tomorrow.”

That imagined tomorrow has come and gone. Now the structures are abandoned relics, with rusted beams, faded paint and cracked concrete. As the fair’s 50th anniversary approaches, the remains of the New York State Pavilion are getting renewed attention, from preservationists who believe they should be restored, and from critics who see them as hulking eyesores that should be torn down. Neither option would come cheap: an estimated $ 14 million for demolition and $ 32 million to $ 72 million for renovation.

“It is the Eiffel Tower of Queens,” says Matthew Silva, who’s making a documentary about the pavilion in Queens’ Flushing Meadows Corona Park, comparing it to a remnant of the 1889 Paris Exposition that was also threatened with demolition before it was saved.

Designed by famed architect Philip Johnson, the New York structures debuted with the rest of the World’s Fair on April 22, 1964, and quickly became among its most popular attractions.

Visitors rode glass “Sky Streak” elevators to the observation deck of a 226-foot tower — the highest point in the fair. The two shorter towers, at 150 and 60 feet, held a cafeteria and a VIP lounge.

The pavilion’s 16, 100-foot-tall concrete columns supported what was then the largest suspended roof in the world, a 50,000 square-foot expanse of translucent, multicolored tiles. On the floor below was a $ 1 million, 9,000-square-foot terrazzo tile map of the state, with details of cities, towns and highways.

In the years after the fair, the pavilion was used as a music venue for such acts as Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead and Fleetwood Mac. In the ’70s, it became a roller skating rink until the collapse of the ceiling tiles, leaving only bare cables behind.

The towers, while still structurally sound, were abandoned as observation decks long ago for safety reasons. Their retro-futuristic look has been most widely known from its use in such movies as “Men in Black” and “Iron Man 2.”

Although occasionally opened for tours, the towers and pavilion — the last major structures still standing from the World’s Fair that have not been preserved — have largely served as a stoic landmark for travelers on the Van Wyck Expressway. Two pad-locked gates — one chain-link, one metal — keep the Tent of Tomorrow shuttered.

“It should be called the ‘Tent of Yesterday,'” says Ben Haber, who lives near the park. “This is not the Parthenon, it’s not the Sphinx, it’s not the pyramids. … So what’s so special that we should keep it?”

At the heart of the debate is the cost. While the city’s Parks Department commissioned studies on the cost of scrapping or renovating the complex, it is still unclear where that money would come from and, if restored, how the structures would be used. If the money comes through, work on the city-owned pavilion could begin as early as next year once officials make a decision.

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz has formed a task force dedicated to preserving the pavilion, noting that other structures from the World’s Fair have been saved, most notably the 12-story-tall metal globe called the Unisphere, the Hall of Science and the Queens Museum.

Among the ideas are to convert the towers once again into observation decks or an elevated garden or even a platform for bungee jumping, with the open-air pavilion turned into a performance space with a removable stage and bleachers.

While that debate plays out, a small group of World’s Fair buffs has formed to repaint the pavilion so it can be open to the public briefly for an April 22 anniversary event. The towers will still be off limits.

“I just loved this pavilion,” says 63-year-old volunteer painter John Piro. “And as the years went on I saw it decay and it just like tore my heart.”

Haber, the Queens resident, argues that nostalgia is fine, but the cost of saving the complex is just too much.

“Urban parks are the backyards for people who don’t have them — so they can sit on the grass, look at trees, flowers, water,” Haber says. “They do not want to look at glass, steel and cement structures.”

G.I. Joe, ‘World’s First Action Figure,’ Turns 50

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — G.I. Joe is turning 50.

The birthday of what’s called the world’s first action figure is being celebrated this month by collectors and the toy maker that introduced it just before the nation plunged into the quagmire that would become the Vietnam War — a storm it seems to have weathered pretty well. Since Hasbro brought it to the world’s attention at the annual toy fair in New York City in early 1964, G.I. Joe has undergone many changes, some the result of shifts in public sentiment for military-themed toys, others dictated by the marketplace.

Still, whether it’s the original “movable fighting man” decked out in the uniforms of the four branches of the U.S. military, or today’s scaled-down products, G.I. Joe remains a popular brand.

“Joe stood for everything that was meant to be good: fighting evil, doing what’s right for people,” said Alan Hassenfeld, the 65-year-old former CEO for Pawtucket, R.I.-based Hasbro Inc., whose father, Merrill, oversaw G.I. Joe’s development in 1963.

But it’s Don Levine, then the company’s head of research and development, who is often referred to as the “father” of G.I. Joe for shepherding the toy through design and development. Levine and his team came up with an 11½-inch articulated figure with 21 moving parts, and since the company’s employees included many military veterans, it was decided to outfit the toy in the uniforms of the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force, with such accessories as guns, helmets and vehicles.

Levine, who served in the Army in Korea, said he got the idea for the moveable figure as a way to honor veterans.

But he and his team knew the product wasn’t in Hasbro’s usual mold, and it took years of pitches before Merrill Hassenfeld gave it the company’s full backing.

“Most boys in the ’60s had a father or a relative who was or had been in the military,” said Patricia Hogan, curator at The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, home to the National Toy Hall of Fame. “Once you’ve bought Joe, you need to buy all the accessories and play sets and add-ons, which was great for business.”

G.I. Joe hit the shelves in time for the 1964 Christmas shopping season and soon became a big seller at $ 4 apiece.

It remained popular until the late 1960s, as opposition to Vietnam intensified and parents shied away from military-related toys. Hasbro countered in 1970 by introducing “Adventure Team” G.I. Joes that played down the military connection. Into the ’70s, G.I. Joes featured “lifelike hair” and “kung-fu grip” and were outfitted with scuba gear to save the oceans and explorer’s clothing for discovering mummies.

Hasbro discontinued production later that decade. In the early 1980s, Hasbro shrank Joe to 3¾ inches, the same size as figures made popular by “Star Wars.” It has stuck to that size, with the occasional issue of larger special editions.

Over the decades, G.I. Joe has spawned comic books, cartoons, two movies starring Channing Tatum, and a G.I. Joe Collector’s Club and its annual convention — GIJoeCon — held in Dallas in April. But for many G.I. Joe fans of a certain age, the newer products hold no appeal.

“The 12-inch G.I. Joe built that company,” said Tearle Ashby, of the New York village of Ballston Spa. “The stuff they put out now is garbage.”

Ashby, a psychotherapist who turns 50 in June, played with G.I. Joes as a boy, but few survived, falling victim to encounters with firecrackers and little parachutes that failed to open.

“Casualties of war,” said Ashby, who started collecting 12-inch G.I. Joes 20 years ago and now owns about 2,000.

On Saturday, he and other collectors plan to bring their 12-inch G.I. Joes to the New York State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs to celebrate the 50th birthday.

The exact date of G.I. Joe’s introduction remains hazy. Ashby and others, including Hasbro, believe it was in February 1964 — but American International Toy Fair organizers say it was held in March that year.

Hasbro said it intends to announce details of its 50th anniversary plans during this year’s fair in New York on Feb. 16-19.

G.I. Joe was elected into Toy Hall of Fame in 2004, six years after Barbie was enshrined. Hogan said the hall doesn’t have policies prohibiting toy weapons from induction, although all candidates must be deemed safe. The U.S. was in the early stages of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq a decade ago, so G.I. Joe’s induction didn’t meet the opposition it might have faced as the conflicts dragged on, Hogan said.

“I suspect,” she said, “most people would have acknowledged that G.I. Joe really does belong in the Toy Hall of Fame.”

Sonic Possible Worlds: Hearing the Continuum of Sound

Sonic Possible Worlds: Hearing the Continuum of Sound

Inspired by its use in literary theory, film criticism and the discourse of games design, Salome Voegelin’s dazzling new book adapts and develops possible world theory in relation to sound. David Lewis’ Possible World is juxtaposed with Merleau-Ponty’s life-world, to produce a meeting of the semantic and the phenomenological at the place of listening. The central tenet of this book is that at present traditional musical compositions and contemporary sonic output are approached and investigated through separate and distinct critical languages and histories. As a consequence, no continuous and comparative study of the field – as exists in literary studies for example – is possible. Voegelin proposes an analytical framework that can access and investigate works across genres and times, and study them within a comparative context. As the discipline of sound studies gains momentum, Sonic Possible Worlds fills a need for a discourse of sound to contextualize and debate emerging sonic practices.
